He's one of the good writers. One of the good guys out there on the they're not all good, but he's one of the good writers out there that really works hard at his trade and doing this thing and boxing his name is Steve Kim and he was he was there. And he was I think I'm trying to remember, I might have got him hyped for that job. He was, he was there to do the research to help us with the research. I think I would want to was. It might have been, it might have been let's see. It might have oh yeah, it might have been 2000. That's how long ago it was. In Australia. It might have been that one. But anyway, Steve Kim told me about that. He was like, talk about intimidating. He's like, I get to be the research assistant for teddy. He goes, it was needless to say it was demanding and intimidating. Yeah, but other than I was great. Listen, I appreciate him. And so that's why I got him for the job. So he was there and Kevin monaghan, who was running embassy, he was also part of getting him there and does a good job. Did a great job there. And also helps the foundation too. So. Martha is one of the greats of all time, you know, he's a stick club. If you're going to be great at home, of course, you just stick one for making sure everything is right. And the research was familiar. But you have to be. Otherwise, you know, you're not going to be that good at what you do. And so he, we not only have to get all the research, we had to get the phonetic spelling for some of these names. These names were tough. They were tough, they were. You like the tie names, don't you? Oh my goodness. You were like, how do we pronounce this? Ask teddy Alice. He's an expert in tie. Yeah. And I would just say, but I could move on my feet a little. I would just say vitamin blew from Thailand. You know, it got right around that one. And it put moth was such a pro. And such a perfectionist, he said teddy, we can't do that. We got to pronounce their names. You're right, mom. So we would ask Steve Kim and this was really funny. We would ask now looks and we're going beyond really his call for duty as his job description. Description a little bit because he's there for research. He's doing a great job. But now we're asking him to help us with the pronunciation of some of these fighters. We were desperate. So we turned, I never forget some off turns to steam. So Steve, how do you pronounce this one? He goes smooth it out. Whenever we had trouble with one, moth would look at me and say, teddy, smooth it out. In the words of the great Steve Kim, smooth it out. Smooth it out. So I smoothen it out. When you say about marvel aren't being a stickler, that actually reminds me very much. When I say that as a compliment and when people ask me, how is it working with teddy? I say, it's the best. He's like one of my best Friends, but I said, imagine playing football for Bill Parcells or Belichick. The players love playing for them, but when he's but when he's like, asks for something to need something, this is not playtime. This is serious business, at least when we're in camp. This is very, very serious. And, you know, at times, you're like, oh, this guy, but you understand why he's doing it. And it makes sense, but that's what all great coaches have in common is like there. Very serious about their craft. But you know what's coming from the right place, but the message might not always be delivered with bouquet of roses and more like a foot up your ass. There's no room for Rosie sometimes, you know what I mean? Nope. You don't get two chances, how did you get one chance at it and you better make it right? And there's a lot on the line. And I have a responsibility. I have a responsibility for a fighter. So I better get it right. I mean all of that as a compliment. No, no, I agree. I mean, I understand that. I appreciate that, and I do. Very much. So all of the mayor, thank you, mister wells. So listen, as I said, so it was so important to get to geography right in this one. And that, as I said, right away you saw that. And while Craig is looking to get on the mat, also Mia needed a wanted to be standing and a boat jockeyed for position to get to geographies. He had 30, 27 sweep for Oz to marry one every round. Yeah, so again, it was called, but that's the way I saw it. In the end, when you got to the third round, I just thought those to me are for his fight more. You know what I mean? He just he fought to fight. He needed to fight more than Craig for his fight. And I agreed I had also mere within that fight. So all right, let's get into let's get into the krylov and Gustafson fight because prior to this fight started, you sent out a tweet that basically said, krylov built quite a sweat woman up in the dressing room ready for a fast start and like I said for a fast start bang and you hit the nail right on the head first round, stoppage, KO's Alexander Gustafsson, tough to watch the big Gustafson, the legend, go out like that, but in the UFC, you know, more so almost in the NFL, not for long.

"I think that if you were a smart executive and you saw what was happening in early on, like Adam silver did, we probably all would have pushed it. But then it did create a world of distractions and it was to the detriment of the game itself. But we shall see. I mean, I think this warrior storyline called me a home or whatever, I do think it's the best story in sports right now. And I can not, it would be incredible if they came back and they had clay come back and he's good again. And man, you get a finals, warriors nets, you know, or your stocks? I want Ben Thompson to get mad at me. Warriors bucks, you know? That's exciting stuff if it happens. Yeah, and those stories. And I think that's what the league is kind of been in the wilderness the past few years because there hasn't been a story to get behind and you've talked about this a lot in your podcast. You talk about it a lot in your articles about people think in terms of stories. Yes. Right? And if there's no story to tell, it's like the warriors thing is so obvious. It's like this team that was great. They went on this incredible historic run. They lose a bunch of guys to injuries, they lose KD to free agency. They absolutely stink up the joint the first year at the KB loses last year. It was like, ah, mediocrity, and then this year, they're the best team in the NBA so far. They don't even have their guy back. It's easy for fans to for fans to follow that story. You know, like, some of the stuff that we're tracking, whether it be like the Celtics, not like in Kyrie's attitude adjustment, or just some of the craziness that we would just end up following as a league, rather than what's taking place on the freaking court. Again, I think that's been to his detriment. I love a bunch of the new guys in the league. Of course, like the jokic is in the bookers and the Donovan mitchells and the Trey youngs. Like these young guy, of course, Giannis, he's a two time MVP. These young new generation guys are interesting people. They're gonna be fun to follow, but we do have to develop these stories. I don't know what they gotta do for jokic. Maybe it's gotta be in this extravagant WWE type intro, where he comes in on a horse because he loves horses so much. I mean, that would be that's one way to catch the attention of the public, I suppose. But yeah, I mean, I'm definitely a culprit in this whole thing. I'm a hypocrite. I run a website where I don't talk about the games at all. So I'm definitely part of the problem I would think. But yeah, it seems like you need to pitch things through story, and that's what this is where we get derailed into nostalgia. But that's what was so amazing about the NBA and NBC. And those intros. Those intros are great because they're great with Marv Albert or Bob Costas doing an aeration, but they're also fantastic because they're telling the audience. They're telling the audience this is important. This is important. This is an epic battle. This is why you should pay attention. This is why you should be into it. I contrast it with I had the experience of doing this podcast with the Cavs, the Cavs bloggers, chased down black guys who are looking back at the 2016 finals. And I had never watched those finals as a TV product because I was there covering them on the ground. And I came away disgusted with the ESPN presentation of it because my experience of these finals, it was so epic. It felt like readable. It was I just remember myself in quicken loans arena. And they start with that Phil Collins in the air of the night intro. And I'm watching the concession years belt the lyrics singing in unison to it as the crowd jumping up and down and really feeling the energy and it's for that game 6 and it's just the hair on the back of your neck is standing up. And then I watched the TV version and they've commissioned the roots and I like the roots, but they've commissioned the roots to do some sort of weird intro and the motif is the number two and it's like two, two games till game 7. Three is the number two. I don't know if you even remember this, but it's just no. What is this? They're not explaining. Why is there no narration? Why aren't you using Mike breen whoever to present this to us? Because this is an epic battle between two opposing forces, the showy, glamorous, barrier versus the Gritty, I'm just a kid from Akron. Yeah, even though it's. Versus the rust belt ether. Yeah, play it up, man. And it's just sitting there for you. And for some reason, the product, there's just not that much thought into it. And it's not like, hey, I love the NBC stuff, but it's not like those guys were geniuses. They just obviously, to quote one ESPN employee gave the people what they want. So yeah, they.

I mean it happened like the peak of sportscenter mania when everyone watch sports sportscenter back before the internet and you got your highlights from sports so the timing of it for you was was probably and i was sitting next to key. "I was so proud because i it's like you know it's almost like they got recognized for doing something at a pretty good level at a pretty high level that they as you to do the olympics i was like wow holy goodness wow thank you i. I must be doing something right. And and then doing the olympics by great partner. Bob pop and a great partner like i said marv albert where he totally have to did with three weeks and you work for two weeks morning and afternoon and night for the first week and ask. And he's a teddy. We did two hundred like seventy eight fights. I was like we did to all my goodness. It's a lotta work it's not a sprint. It's a marathon. You gotta be prepared. You gotta be ready to Pronounce a lot of names that you have no idea how to now. I will say. I want to see a compilation of pronouncing some of the asian names. The time john. It's not pretty. And it's not pretty. And i tried to treat with the great vowed to once and i said well the the the fight of foam as by john in a balloon non on. You can't do that in a blue trunks. That say as they. So he's right he's dryer. You can't cheat. But thank goodness phonetic spelling and all that even with that it wasn't it wasn't a layup but what really was horrific and that's the i work was seeing the corruption. I've been around boxing. All my life most my life fifty years now and i've seen all the corruption. The appro games for what i saw at the time who was running the olympics was i abe. Weird how that always happens isn't it and it seems like it's like i can't tell if it's coming from the announcer or one particular executive who might be have a real interest in putting those stories out there i just i can't tell you know you know my theory curtis anytime. They put the salary of either what they want or what they're already making in one of those stories. It's that's that's the network. Move to try to basically undermined the town a little bit. That's always how i feel when they do that. But what do i know Because the fans read that they're like whoa. They're making what Anyway i wanted to talk about some media stuff. We'll start with marv albert because this is gonna be pretty soon and we might have a j. dante. The joke about if janas comes back for game seven five minutes before a game seven knew he could have marva. Here comes jaanus and do the nineteen seventy five finals callback but We're at the taylor. Amar what are you. What are your final thoughts here. I think it's incredibly important to remember that the first year he does the national. Nba telecast is ninety ninety one which is also michael jordan's first title so he comes in with amazing timing and you and i are old enough to remember when the nba was like everybody's third choice for a sports media career behind baseball and football yet. I remember that first year. Marv during the nbn nbc and watching it going. Oh my god. This guy's not just a great announcer. He's actually a basketball nerd. He actually loves pro basketball in a way that. I don't think i'd heard a national announcer express in quite the same way. Like i think. I've written this for the ringer. Bill is the way that zach lowe writes about basketball. You write about basketball. That was the way marv announced basketball. Like middleton beautiful move. You know right ball beautiful pass. He just he had this appreciation for it for its own sake and you know. Dick stockton in the eighties brent in the eighties bit. I just never got the same vibe that that was it for them. And that an marv was exactly where he most wanted to be in the world when he was calling those games that that's that's the first thing that stood out to me yet basketball announcing from a national level. A pretty storied. History of bad combinations. Bad decisions i did a whole. I think in my book i did like two pages about just how over and over again. How many mistakes they made because they would always just put the famous ex star in the booth with no rhyme or reason to whether the person was going to be good or not so oscar. Robertson was in there. I think he got he got kind of pushed out during during the playoffs in nineteen seventy five. I think You had bill. Russell was in their elgin baylor You had pat summerall announcing basketball. Then you had in stockton in heinsohn who everybody felt like was the celtics homer and he was trying really hard not to be a celtics homer but he obviously was. He's the bled celtic green so we never really found the right combination. It didn't feel like until it was Marvin fratello in that. It was his love for basketball. A sense of humor. I when my parents got divorced. I moved to connecticut for eighth grade and i got to hear him do knicks games. It was a revelation you'd heard kinda the rumors and he had done some nbc sports stuff then boxing and things like that. He'd done some football game so i had heard him in other platforms. But i'd never heard somebody with the rhythm of the game that sounded like you know somebody that cared as much as i did and i think even felt that During that hawks. Game when janas got hurt when the hawks are playing really well and marvelous get into it and heard her had three and marketed. The kevin herder in the name and i was like old school mar. Bring it back So yeah it's it's hard not to be nostalgic. He certainly the greatest ever. I think breen has approached him in a lotta ways but mar being i get the advantage but i do think breen who reveres marvin grew up listening to him and respects them and really has cribbed. Some of marv style I think he has carried the torch. Would you agree. Yeah oh absolutely. But i had. It's very funny. I had a famous announcer. Tell me a couple of years ago. People don't understand the difference between prime marv and prime breen. I don't know what to tell them yet because there is a difference and it was a sense. I think with marv again. I'm with you with breen man. If you're in brains hands to call a game. I feel great. He's awesome. he's technically all just right where he needs to be. But marv had this weird funny side about him yes he. He had all these other tools and he would be like. I remember one time. He was calling the playoffs with bill. Walton and they were doing the draft lottery at halftime and they went to the. You know that shot where they showed the ping pong balls in the hopper and marv comes back and he's just like bill walton mesmerized by the flow of the ping pong ball and. It doesn't even respond. I don't think well said anything. And it was almost marvis marvez very different than david letterman. But they had this commonality that. I felt with both of them that they would make jokes. And you you. And i'd be sitting there as kids watching on tv and go. I don't think everybody got that joke. But i got that joke. That's kind of the greatest feeling of somebody funny on tv when you feel like oh i got that i hear..

You know jaanus last night. Trae young stepping on an officials foot even go back to lebron during his ankle. We've had injuries kyrie irving his injury. And what had to do with conditioning. And what is just a coincidence. Here we've had bigger names here and the might have been right. It's the condense schedule quick turnaround after winning the championship but whatever the reason the injuries have affected every aspect to the postseason. Now we hope that trae. Young and the greek freak croquet. They're able to play. I don't know if this is going to be able to play. It looked really really bad. Initially he walked off on his own power. But i thought reggie miller made a great point. When the greek freak is limping off and marv albert said well he's you know he's limping off on his own power and then read said it's probably adrenaline right there. He did come back. He sat on the bench. Which i thought was a great move as if to say. Hey we can still do this. Like let's what sometimes when that star disappears and you keep waiting for him to come back. They knew that he wasn't going to be able to play but he was there in the moment with them and i think that that while they didn't win to me i loved what i saw with the greek freak doing that. But you know we just have to settle for competitive games. We may not see the best players. And i know that you're going to have people. We love to always attach an asterisk. Well that team that won the title in twenty twenty one. That's an astra's it just like the lakers. They wanted to bubble. That's an asterisk. You you win a trust me if the sons the box. The hawks the clippers win the title. They're going to celebrate. You can kiss their asterisk. They don't care they just want to win a championship here. And then this fans starts running onto the field, and he starts doing play by play for him. And honestly, that was like the most exciting thing that happened that night. Um No, but you know what? It is Sauce. He's not too like He's not above having fun during a game to where I think the average Play by play person, and this isn't a criticism of them would just say Okay, let's step away from what's going on here and let's just filibuster until they get stuff going on. He actually had fun with it. Yeah, which was awesome. I also like what like brain as well for me like I think it's not just him having like that signature catchphrase and just being like one of the best play by play guys that in in the NBA right now, it's also the fact that when you listen to when you ever you listen to next broadcast, and it's him and Walt like It's the most chemistry, strongest chemistry and the most fluid broadcast you'll ever hear. Well, Clyde Frazier's amazing he has. He has catchphrases as well. Now you're right. The chemistry. I've gotten a chance to watch some Knicks games over the years, and they're great. Mike Breen is very good, good energy. Good pace. He's not too sticky, right? Like the Bang gives you just enough to where he has his signature call Mike Greens, I would say is the top NBA guy right now for sure. Then you have the and then you have the college announcers. I would say that that I'll use the term pound for pound, but based for everything that they do. Jim Nance between lead voices. The Masters of CBS Golf lead voice of their football does Super Bowls. He's great at that with Romo. Um, And then you got college basketball. He's the how many years has he been doing the road to the Final four with CBS, even though I think he's a He's like a little bit boujee for me a little bit. You know what I mean? A little bit highbrow for me, Nance, but naturally rising to the occasion and not having to do something sticky or not having the right down something that he's going to say when when there's a championship. It was a Just a ferocious snowstorm in the east. So i went up at the last minute on an all night train. Ride with my brother. Al who Also was a broadcaster in you know later on He was my statistician and we stayed over for three hours at a hotel in boston and then had to prove to the people at the press gate that we were actually doing the game i was i was like nineteen twenty s old and did not look like i was the broadcast about.
