"The writer darab the movie that made me exist. I'm here because of that film. So why not have him. As the god father of your child. All-star what is it like to have ron shelton as godfather. I mean as i got older and realized all the movies he had written and directed it really. I mean as. I did what he does really became more of a resort. We get lunch a lot now. And i really liked. The guy is amazing. How were you introduced him to bull. Durham i was introduced to you Well i went to audition for ron. I did really well. And then the agent says did really well but you gotta go through. And so i am i i. Then i went out and met kevin pitched through. Its through the ball around with them so okay so we want to make sure that you know people could throw. Yeah i played third base. Never pitched before. So i learn all those mechanics and then on top of that. I wanted to do a kind of fernando valenzuela thing rolling back right which was gala. Yeah breathe through your island. Yeah pretty much. So so the catch that you had to conduct in order to get the gig was with kevin costner. Yes where you're out at warner brothers studios out in the valley and i'll outside a bungalow. You're supposed to throw it in any direction right there you know. He was written as a lefty right and wrong decided that he wanted me so into a right right a kind of ruined the movie. Though only he was a lefty really taken. The next time you might not exist. That's you know you think about it and you boil it all down the premium guys. You memorize your lines that day. Yeah wow that was fast. Nuclear lewis asphalt there. I know pretty much rush back. What do you have a question for this man like. That's your movie man. I guess for me the lines of bull durham. "Pitchers being checked for gunk. One way to put it on search and we've already had a baseball hall of famer on the show. Reggie jackson being one of the two mystery guests that called into the show To wish me a happy birthday today it's fifty second birthday day today and Pro football hall of famer. Michael irvin first hour and second hour reginald martinez jackson and our final mystery guests is on the phone right now. Is that correct. Chris brockman correct correct. And we just do. I just get right into it just like the should just say hello. Oh my god me. Hello mr gates number three Rich on the mementos occasion of your birthday. I'm calling to say happy birthday and hope you are having a great one. And remember fifty to fifty watts marv albert. Oh my gosh this is. This is amazing. I'm all i don't know what to say. Thank you my god. You have some lineup. I must say well. It's my to use your phrase. Mike crack staff marfan. It's my crack staff. They've done a fine job. They've hustle their way through. Oh i'm doing great. I'm so much better for talking to you. Marv wow i don't even know how to begin other than to say What's what's going on in your world. Marv wisconsin you these basketball series between atlanta and the walkie. I'm currently in the walking. Yes after a trae. Young put on a Momentous show last night it was incredible And that that's about it and so let's get into before you What you saw last night How many players in your illustrious career have you seen shimmy prior to hoisting An open shot and jarring it to quiet the crowd. How many times have you seen that one marv. Russia appropriately enough I'm doing the eastern conference final. With reggie miller and i think i've seen reggie do everything that Trae young has pulled off. Did the bow. Reggie did yes he was. The pacers did in chicago and At the garden last week. I thought that was a great woman. Who said it's what they do on. Broadway quoting trae young when you finish up the show and certainly did that against against the knicks. But now there hasn't been too many You know pistol. Myra vich may have done a few things in his day but there have not been this type of personality. And you know. He's a nice kid and he handles them so self so well particularly on post game interviews. But wha- what an offensive player you know always find space puts up forty eight points. Last night against the walking. I think he accounted for seventy two of the points between assists And points for the The hawks there was a big surprise. that they took game war they. They've really been a of fun team to watch. It's kind of a cinderella story developing and they mcmillan the coaches done a great job you know since taking over he's like thirty six and fifteen so it's it's been a certainly a different type of playoff run So the in a long time. Obviously because lebron you know he Got bounced in the first round steph. Curry didn't make it out of the state farm. Play tournament If i say it correctly and and you give the sponsor plug. I'm just trying to you. Know there may be an iron rich eisen amoco player when it comes to the association and you know put it all together and this is i mean. Is this the most wide open playoffs that you we've witnessed in quite some time. I believe so. I would agree with that because you have phoenix Team that looked very strong and it seemed to come out of nowhere in the bubble and they continue right through the regular season The clippers you know coming back from two oh twice and now we'll have to do it again And then atlanta to me has been a major surprise milwaukee. Not so much. I i don't i don't think surprise. You had the Philadelphia from injuries as you indicate plate. Amazing a big role in what is what has taken place but some of the other Teams but even in the hawks to have some Injured players deondraye. Hunter is a very important guy At the defensive and The bucks actually pretty good shape. Dante steven chen zo. Who's an important player. But these two teams Are i mean who knows what's gonna happen now. I mean the milwaukee has the home court advantage but anything can happen in this series marv here on the rich eisen. Show marv I've i've is just one of this. I'll ask you on. I know you've you've spoken about it. Why why now retiring why. Why now for you. Well yeah. I just For several years. I've fifty five years of doing nba basketball would doing and i found that the pandemic although it was terrible to see you know what happened throughout the country throughout the world in terms of people getting sick people dying obviously but My family i we. We were fortunate. in new york where it actually is pretty good right now and I found the pandemic was like a rehearsal for retirement. I i enjoy reading. I became Mr tv bencher. I haven't had that opportunity probably ever Working out spending time. with With my family all that good stuff. And i kind of enjoyed it and i think What i when you hit eighty you gotta start thinking about stuff like that and you know we certainly will take some some trips And we have a place in florida so we'll be down there so i'm looking forward to that. I sure that when late. October early november rolls around. There will be aspects of it that i miss. I love the preparation for the games. I love being around Particularly the production people. But the coaches who you get to know extremely well because they give Quite a bit of that time You know to the broadcasters and you know just being around the whole scene is is fun. I know on this back. Part of it There's some people. I may not miss Former color commentator. Mike patillo now calls every day. It's very annoying man Like last night he he somewhere in florida and he knows have the game but he invites me did her. That's what steve kerr to out a great sense. A lot of we worked together for about eight years and he's he's been off the charts to a good way with his comeback. So you get you miss that kata stuff. But i'm sure it's not not at games. So i am mandated. Ask you marv albert. What what does marv albert binge-watch. What's television shows you binge-watching marv what he got. You know. I think. I saw everything because people keep telling me about new shows and I mean from ozark justified. It was a great Israeli show photo. I ended up watching a lot of french and english shows. What's up titles. Of course there's there's one called call by agent that rich i would recommend to you. What did did frederick vice suggest. That one that are yes tell was that was a french show. Yeah and that was funny Better call saul. I enjoy it. Goes on on recent ones Marrow these What else Another one i'd highly recommend godfather of harlem flowers epochs yet farc forest whittaker. Okay very good. I are so many good ones right out. He's like Ted lasso ted lasso. That is is already justice today. 'cause terrific you could do some tv critic work as well if you want to. Just keep your toes. Excuse marv albert here on the rich eisen show Inbetween games one and two of the eastern conference finals. "The flu game the six threes against portland when he wasn't really a free point shooter but i recall early Way before the guys came out to warm up just to shoot freeze and then he hit the six and i was working with those. Are my pillow You recall that name. And also my Magic johnson and michael have that shrug and what he hit the six looking over towards our table he was actually looking at although micro tell claims he was. You know giving him aside. I'm looking at him. It wasn't wasn't the case but That was one of the great thrills are also situations in my days. with the knicks When they won their first championship in sixty nine seventy there were several dramatic games with willis. Week heard people thought he was not going to play in game seven And then he walked out onto the court late in warm ups. And i recall. The laker team just stopped and stared. We'll chamberlain couldn't believe that Willis was taking the court and he hit two jump shots early and i was basically that was his contribution except for the fact that he inspired them and it was really You know as one of the great moments of new york sports where they won because they never won a championship. They won and seventy three wasn't quite the same feeling they want in la. So you don't have the new york Fans on hand but That was a just a terrific team because of the style they played with You know the ball moving Kinda like phil jackson's triangle. Later years and It was such a smart team you know with bradley and a film was on that team. Although he was that year. And dave the butcher willis clyde people forgotten game seven because all the conversation they'll around willis play but wall frazier had one of the all time greatest playoff. You have thirty six points. Nineteen assists seven rebounds and that. Sometimes it's forgotten except wouldn't mattress. Well he was also going against jerry west. I think he also had six steals in there. It was and he didn't win. Mvp will willis scott mvp right. He did yes. He had some good games early but he got hurt. Actually in game five and that was red holzman who was the head. Coach accepted input from his players particularly bradley in the bush. And there were no other assistant coaches in those days but bradley. The bushes suggested a movement offense. That really worked against a laker team. That was you know as chamberlain west It was it was. They were a super team although they all know jerry west just one of the one championship as it turned out as great as he was but it was really the bush and bradley's input So i think that had a lot to do with it because now you see interest where you know ten coaches you know five sitting behind The regular venture..

Reggie don bailer grid greenwich. I don't know if don bailer was old at the time. But they felt like they collected those older guys. There was a no hitter last night. Spencer turn bowl no hit the mariners. That's five no hitters through may eighteenth that ties the nineteen seventeen season for most through that date in baseball history and congratulations. The mariners first team since the two thousand fifteen dodgers to get no hit twice in the same month. Yeah they were just no hit by the orioles. John means may fifth yes tante. That's pretty embarrassing. Thank you todd. yeah. I wonder what What the angels can do just feels like no matter what they've tried. It just hasn't worked can't get to that next level here and already marino's taking chances. They're always feels like okay. They're they're signing. Don't like they're spending some money here. And every time they spent money it just it never never panned out never went well the our pool signing that wasn't good ball. It's really funny though. It's such a dodgers town that the dodgers had the pressure on in the past seven or eight years they get the world series and they finally want it but dangerous get no criticism because relevancy. They don't even get in the mix. The dodgers caught heat for years for not winning the world series. But they were in i. What six seven years. At least seven years in a row. They had to be first place. Well the angels didn't get good enough to break your heart so their expectations weren't very high. But the dodgers are always first of all their salary. And then you have these marquee players bring in mookie betts. You got clayton kershaw. Don mattingley was there and joe tori. Was there like you expected. Great things magic johnson's involved in the ownership see had star power there. Yeah todd the angels. Don't even know what to call themselves over the past several years they have no identity there. The california angels the los angeles angels of anaheim either. Yeah that's a that's a problem of itself to not know what you could call yourself which the poll question mclovin we're going to go within the lower okay so our one was. Who do you have. The lakers are the field. Eighty-three percent said the show. We asked who. Who do you have in the west. If not the lakers. The jazz are runaway winners. Okay how about our three. Are you cool. With the three ot swing and homerun a curious what people will say eighty percent in year. Two thousand twenty one or fine with that well but you have to set it up and be harder to set it up in a poll question because it's fifteen two four. It's a positional player. And he's throwing a three..

Run last night is fourteen first player to lead the league in home runs and start a game as a pitcher since babe ruth. Yep that babe. Ruth otani was a curiosity at first big time pitcher and hitter out of japan and the angel said that he would do both and a lot of people including myself were skeptical because i was hoping that he would choose to be a hitter instead of being a pitcher but he's been great. His era is two point. One hundred forty strikeouts five starts. He's scheduled to go tonight. The angels are not taking advantage of otani success. They learn mike trout. Yesterday is going to be out. Maybe two months with a cap strain. the angels. Just can't get it right. they can. They've had good players when you would think with otani trout rendong nucleus there but we got one of the best players in the game. You probably have the player that more people are curious about in otani plus when he. It's a home run. It's a home run that there's no doubt you know like that's what he hits. He hits But you're not winning and if you're not going to be playing in the playoffs you just sort of out of sight out of mind here and the dodgers make you look even worse. The padres are better than you are. And you're just looking for any kind of relevancy then you have that with otani. Trout's a great player. But he's been in one playoff series in his career in club. Do you think trout's lack of sort of big time is species with the angels or.

"Barry who has a very low key sense of humor as you know but i think that when i first started out its network if it's an nfl game It's different when you're broadcasting to a hometown audience because you take for granted they know a little bit more information about the players and also about tendencies and it's different on the national level. I think you have to be particularly when you jumping from team to team Every sunday or every saturday. I think there are things you would say or anecdotes us that you might not on a local broadcast of a nickname or rangy game. How long does it take you. And you've had a lot of broadcast partners over the years. How long does it take you to develop chemistry with a broadcast partner. Some right away sometimes in the off time you know that that contributes to it and sometimes it takes a little while you really get to know each other Particularly with humor because it really it can be someone who might not get it. You know at times. Or maybe. I don't get it. You know by trying to have them get it so you kind of feel your way through it. I mean not to say you know. This is a comedy show. But i think it's important to And if you make a mistake to be able to to make light of it you know i do. I remember working with Bill parcells who that that was a great experience. I worked nbc nfl games with built and He would always say if producer we come up with some kind of Graphic where it would be of humor. Perhaps at the cost of bill he would always say. Look what does this Milton berle who had here you. You have this He eat have a reference to someone of the fifties usually but bill is very funny. And i got a great getting to know him because his knowledge and other sports play. Nba initials all the time and he was really good. I must but he prepared for it to you. Know we go to the practice on a friday or saturday morning and he would he prepared with obscure names and he'd be very annoyed. If i or anybody else on the crew would would come up with the correct. That's her i. I always think it's It had been. I've been lucky. Growing up in the northeast. And now you know watching national basketball locally. I thought mike. It was accidental. I be playing ball in the school yard brooklyn a friend of mine From high school it always be a guy who's doing play by play as you're playing three on three. It wasn't me i was. "And then seventy two seventy three you had writers were very close to red holzman so as a result you you didn't have the kind of coverage that you have today where redwood tell people things had happened in baseball and hockey also football and it would not be printed today. It's incredibly different. Certainly with social media now but even prior to social media in the seventies the eighties and nineties you know they came a little Let's see wary of of things being getting out so that that changed. But you know red holes for example would play cards with the writers. And we'd go to dinner with a right as you. Just don't see that anymore. It's more protective now. In in in every way so That was a major difference. I'm of the writers went on the chargers. You do not see them as the broadcast is usually went on the join but the writers did the not so it was really separation. Have you ever gone back and listened to that. Nineteen was it. Sixty celtic Knick game you're fill-in debut i you know. I heard the tape along time ago and it was a different sound but what i was first starting out broadcasting because that was around mark licnen so frequently i was. I was talking like him. Even answer the phone at home. Like mardi hit a very distinctive way about him. And i think i got my parents crazy with with that. I mean i didn't even realize i was doing it. And then the most important thing for a young broadcast to is to develop his own sil- and it was influenced by the fact that he really set the geography of the court and i started out primarily doing radio and he was mostly on radio. And you always knew where the ball was or in hockey. Where where the puck was and it was important to get You know those particular geographical areas correct. It's on the right side light. It said along the baseline. What kind of shot is it as a running one hander. Is it a jump. Shot from twenty is is he cutting to his left as a backdoor pass on the bounce. This more radio than tv tv you'll pull back. I feel you should pull back. I mean you see quite a bit of it but you don't have to talk as much and you're also setting up. The color man particularly in basketball hockey is more of a play by play sport. Because it's so fastener so few commercial breaks. But that's what i gain from being around marty glickman as much as i was because Just sitting with him and watch him capture the game. I thought it was no one like about that. Time in coming up as you said with your own style. Is it just trial and error as you're going through You know the these jobs in or you try. He working on stuff at home at the same time. How are you. How are you formulating that. That personal it's a bit of trial and error and i used to listen to every possible broadcast. I mean i remember my shortwave. Radio particularly with hockey hockey was very big. Where i grew up in brooklyn. We had roller hockey league's As it turns out my son played hockey and ended up playing for club team at nyu. And my brother. Al who ended up doing the denver nuggets indiana pacers and nets briefly in new york But he was a hockey nut and he would travel. "All right. So chris from your conversation with him and from watching him as a broadcaster over the years. How would you say bill. Walton has evolved from my selfish perspective. "Said I just channeled my inner Marv Albert and screamed, yes, I think ferns being a little bit hard on himself there. That was pretty pretty perfect. Yeah. And look I think to say there's a a general philosophy that you have to follow every time around is is not a fair statement different situations. Call for different reactions, and the one thing that I would want to articulate in this moment for every announcer. You've just done an entire game. Or you've prepared for in some cases, four games in that one day or two games and that one night, and you don't know how everything transpired prior to that. But all you're left with is this this little morsel of history. So there is some pressure that you feel and those that can handle that and massage it and manage it. And not over think, it are usually the ones that come away feeling good about things. But that's a great example of what a broadcaster may felt in the moment. And what public may have felt could be two completely different answers. You know, the fact that Vern said that could have been better and most people listen to say that was perfect. There's nothing more that needed to be said, sometimes you do need to say more, and you do need to provide a little more context and color, and because we're in a business now where these calls are manipulated and used in different forms for announcers. They think that maybe this is their shot to to be a part of history. But you better be true to yourself. Don't go outside of who. You are. Don't try to be something that you're not if it's in authentic, then people will. We'll figure it out and overtime. The reaction will not be as as positive. I and you're going to be in Kansas City for the Sweet Sixteen North Carolina. Auburn and Kentucky. Houston are going to be there. I am magin. If Tyler hero makes the game winning shot for Kentucky the line might right itself. Otherwise. I'm looking forward to hearing. What you come up with? Hey, look, I'm I'm not that proud. I'm I could be Casey Kasem in this moment. I'll take requests. I was thinking about Jared Harper for Auburn, maybe like a Harper's fairytale or something. But, you know, just just you know, just putting it out you understand this. This has to play to the mass. You've got five days to figure something out. Josh. Thank you for coming on the show. Yeah. Anytime guys great talking to you. Now, it is time for after balls and one game winning call that we did not get to our segment with an eagle was the following from the man Bill Raftery seven seconds to go. Three. Was siennas Ronald more in double overtime against Ohio State and the NCAA tournament. That's what you get. When like more debt you make too. Buzzer beating shots in the same game. The rare onions double order, you had mentioned that Reeves wiediman piece in the New Yorker, and in that one Verne Lundquist is asked about his favorite game ending call and he mentions in Scully calling Kirk Gibson's walk off Homer in the nineteen eighty eight World Series and all Scully said was like it's Atta here, and then he let the crowd noise takeover for like a minute. And then Scully said in a year of the improbable the impossible has happened. And as we demand rights it as Rafter he walked away Lundquist said that that call wasn't ideal to emulate, it's the subtlety of it. There's a bit of poetry. He said glancing rafters direction. It's not onions double order. So if you things are Stephan, what is your onions double order, according to the Oxford English dictionary and Mariam Webster the first date of usage for the boxing. And then brain injury term Punchdrunk is nineteen twelve. It was the lead of a story datelined New York on June twenty-ninth, and it appeared in newspapers across the country Punchdrunk through the first round and floundering around like a great helpless calf his mouth and nose. Shedding blood in a thick stream even flattened on the floor for the full count of nine Al pals or the Iowa far.
