"Is then everything else in your life would be open to discovery. I know. Unlike you. I've been down this road too many times before. Exactly. Oh, wow. I've been sworn in as a defendant in these cases. You know, so I got to tell you, tomorrow I'm a little worried about you because it's going to be chilly here. For SEC nation. It's supposed to be like 36° when we start off. You got the toboggan go in tomorrow, what are we working with? I know I'm not afraid of the cold. Well, I know some fans that really enjoy when you wear the beanie. Okay. Do you have it here? I was talking about your personal life. Yeah, I moved on to the weather. You know, if you notice in conversation you would like to know more about Laura. They would not. They're all like, no, I don't care. Yeah. You're all look so cute, by the way. Everybody looks great. See, that's her secret. What? As soon as we can start getting close to the edge, you start buttering up the audio. I love them. They're so cute. Yeah, of course, everybody. Yeah. I'm the heel, Laura's the queen. Princess princess. What? You know what? You're starting to remind me of Meghan Markle. I'm really annoying. And then you're making me more annoying to people. I got somebody that hit me up the other day and said, why are you trashing trashing Megan and Harry? Oh, I got a tweet from that person too. They said that that was like awful of us. And by the way, I think they're great. I don't know. I don't know. Do you think she's more like Megan or Kate? Kate Middleton? Like who's that? Now, I wish. You just dissed. Look at my one earring. Oh, queen of England. What? Yeah, she'll be the queen one day. Who? Kate. Kate. Well, yeah. What are you talking about? Like, she's a dancer at some script choice. She's a future queen of. Okay, well that was too hard. She's a classy woman. What are you talking about? What do you know about strip joints? My goodness. You don't eat meat. Do you go to strip joints to eat? I don't know. I'm talking about something new. I grew up in Memphis. We didn't have we had meatless strip joints. And by the way, anytime I fly through Memphis because it is. Well, no, I always think like, wow, Paul's from here. I am from there. When you fly in there to come here, do you like spend a little extra time? I get emotional because there's a lot of my life that's in Memphis. Really, what really gets you? Well, just the past. Yeah. Try to find out more. That was once a young innocent young kid in Memphis. With big ambitions. You were innocent for probably three days of your life. I mean, if you had told me, when I was 15 or 16, that many years in the future, I would 63 years to 63 miles, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You're not 63, are you? No. 63 plus 50. You're definitely not there. 63 miles down the road. I would be sitting in the grove with the queen. It's a future queen of England. I wouldn't have believed it. I can't deal with you. Yeah, okay, tell me. So how long did you live in Memphis? Like how old were you when you moved away? Well, I really didn't move away. I went to college. Okay. And then I moved away. And then you moved away. You got it. But I mean, formative years for you. Yeah, I was born in Memphis. Yeah. I spent all of my young years there. That means blue suede shoes. I knew Elvis. Oh, have you seen the new Elvis movie, by the way? It's not that new anymore, but I wanted to ask you about that, actually. I mean, I don't, any of you have this problem at home with your wife, you're talking about one subject and by the way, the roofers came today. Well, Paul, here's what happens. Is I think of things I want to talk to you about all week long. And then I don't get to see you. So I have to just throw it all out there. We have this relationship that we basically the only time all week that we have together is right here a lot. I know that's why people, you know, you guys are like actually just seeing real-time conversation actually is. I mean, we're like the best of Friends, but we never talk. Yeah, everyone has those friends. You know, it's like I just already know what you're doing or what you're thinking and then we talk through some of it. But it's great. Okay, well, anyway, I know we're about out of time and I hope somebody asks somebody reminded me that I used to do two segments on this show on Friday and then so we were asking why it didn't happen anymore and I was told by everybody in Charlotte that because it was way too much trouble and people requested that I only be on the one segment. It was budget cuts. I'm on the show for free, okay? Don't let no budget cuts, okay? For those who don't remember, what was it four or 5 years ago? I used to come up to our show every week. So I drove there. And I didn't know that. I was listening to some podcasts with you this summer. Oh, yeah. And I found out that I thought, you know, she was Paul, the sacrifice. I had no idea that actually what you were doing. Reality is, hold it and need me one bit at all. And so he was sacrificing for me to have a great opportunity in my career, which is why I continued to drive their every single. It was an amazing fall. We were like, the two of us over America. We toured. We traveled together. It's coming back. Watch out. We're going to tour. And then most of those things that ended badly. Didn't know it did it. You just wanted to end badly. I just want to tell you what happened. What? You got pregnant? I did. I know. And you're The Godfather. We're going to stir that one back up again. We have to go to a break. I'm having a conversation. I know. Okay. Thank you. Thanks again for dropping by. It's great to be with you guys. The rest of this conversation will be available on ESPN+, subscribe now. Get the app. Somebody could make some money off this. I know, what are they waiting for? You know anybody in the company? I know. We'll be right back. "But it's not going to be easy because Arkansas is very potent. Yeah, you know, I think even adding to that challenge, I mean, they are in the most treacherous part of their schedule with Alabama. I mean, it stayed in Alabama the next two weeks. I mean, it doesn't get any easier. And in speaking with coach Fisher about that, I remember having a conversation with Joe moorhead when he was a Mississippi state. His second year at Mississippi state. And I asked him, you know, kind of what comes with being the head coach in the SEC for the first time that we can't see. And he said it was, I would watch the tape of the game we just played and go my gosh, that team was a really good team. And then you turn on the tape for the team that you're going to face the next week and go, oh my God, they're even better. It's just this unrelenting gauntlet. But what they're trying to do, Fisher constantly preaches to his team, be where your feet are. You have to. You can't worry about what happened. You can't really worry about the scoreboard. You have to play to the standard, not the scoreboard because what happens right now on this play is the most important thing. And when you're talking to 19 year olds, that's often a very difficult message to drive home. He feels like it's starting to resonate with this group. That piece tomorrow morning here on the network, wow, that's I can not wait to see it in its entirety because one thing that law did in the bounce back, it slowed down a lot of people looking ahead two weeks in terms of that battle that we all thought would be the game of the year in college football. We did. And obviously there's a lot of intrigue with everything that was said this summer on both sides from coach Saban towards Jimbo's program and from Jimbo directly at coach Saban. And I think if you ask both of them right now, they say, oh, we're fine. But they have no problems. When those players get between the lines, they're going to want to knock some hands. Marty Smith appreciate it. Thank you for having me. Extraordinary conversation. We have another hour to go. We are live in Arlington, Texas, and we will see you in just a moment.

Thank you very much, Carl. Really appreciate your time. We are live in Arlington. We've had a busy show. So many guests dropping by here and we'll continue that as well as work into some of your phone calls over the next hour. And 20 minutes, Marty Smith right around the corner, and many more guests as we head for the home stretch here on a Friday afternoon. You are listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. Hey, welcome back, we are in Arlington, Marty Smith, joining us. I want to say one more thing about our previous conversation with Cole Kubrick. I did not realize what was going on because I knew there was water on the camera on the lens, but Cole got drenched by a sprinkler and he never stopped and never said a word. I noticed it on my walk from our workroom here that Cole got drenched and I thought it was like part of a skit or something he was doing. I didn't realize that it was he didn't even skip a beat. No, he just seasoned broadcast professional right there. I'll be happy to get cooled off. Probably was. Marty Smith, joining us. You've been in College Station talking to Jimbo, so I'm going to put my feet up and listen. It was an interesting conversation. You know, it's been a unique couple of weeks down there. Losing Appalachian state and then turning right around and beating a really good capable university of Miami team. So I went down there to kind of ask him all the questions, including I remember when he first got the job, I went down to College Station in the spring, pushing summer of 2018 before his first season there. And I asked him how will you define success? Here in College Station. And he said, when the west win the league and win national championships, that's what we're here for. And so now here he is three games into year 5. So how's he doing? And it's an interesting thing. They have not gotten to that place. Obviously, they play in an extremely difficult. I

"Welcome back as fans here are excited about an undefeated Vanderbilt team. How about that? We'll talk to the Chancellor of this university and about 15 minutes. Our next guest. Certainly phi beta Kappa at his school. Chris doering, joining us to talk about the weekend's games. Hey, Chris. Good afternoon. Welcome. Good to be with you, Paul. How you doing? Thank you very much. We're doing great. Let's start with the most obvious game that I'm sure you've been hearing a lot about. And it's the transformation of the Kentucky Florida game and all the things that have changed. You live down there. I mean, how crazy has this week been? It's crazy right, just the transformation, as you mentioned, I mean, for so long, all we talked about with the domination by Florida 31 straight years of defeating Kentucky, and then all of a sudden, in the last four, you split two and two, including a win where Kentucky went to the swamp and showed that they could win under the lights in prime time there. So I don't think Kentucky's at all intimidated anymore by Florida. I think they go in and believe that they can play with the Gators and I do think things have even changed some from where I thought this game was gonna be in the preseason. You know, I famously amongst the Florida fans picked Kentucky to win it in the off season and that was because I thought Kentucky was going to be able to run the football a little bit better than what they did against Miami. I thought they'd be able to protect a little bit better than what they did against Miami of Ohio and I didn't think quite honestly that Florida's offense would be quite as good and quite as dynamic as they looked and a lot of people want to talk about Anthony Richardson, but it wasn't just him. I was surprised Paul, but the offensive line, I thought they were more physical than what I expected in the running backs. They were a nice compliment to what Anthony Richardson did on the ground. So I think these things have changed a lot since we kind of looked at it back in July when we were at SEC media days. So has it changed enough to change the outcome and see the Gators start off two and O. You know what? I did not at all believe that they would be able to do it. I know there's been some shuffling on the offensive line and no horse he's back for Kentucky, but for whatever reason, I think Florida is going to win this game. And I think it comes down to that Florida defensive line against Kentucky's offensive front. I think that's the one deficiency for Florida. I think that's the Achilles heel is they're not up to what you would expect typically from a Florida defensive front. You go back and look at that second half of the game between Utah and Florida last week. They gave up almost 7 yards of carry in the second half. I think that indicates that they were over a size, and I think that they were very thin and starting to get fatigued. But the one thing that will hurt Kentucky this week, no Chris Rodriguez, the running back room was pretty much been decimated, which is crazy to think about with all the talent there, but I think that's the matchup within the match up that's going to decide the game. I'm going to give Florida the edge there. South Carolina and Arkansas, we all know the backstory here, the gamecocks have a shot next week with a win here to host where they're going to host Georgia, whether they want to or not, but the enthusiasm for that game would go through the roof of the win. Are they going to get one in razorback land? You know, Paul, it was great to be in Columbia last week. I got a chance to call that game against Georgia state and all of the talk in the off season was about Spencer Rattler. Well, the storyline was that the defense and special teams dominated that game in the offense was actually not as big of a factor, primarily because of the offensive line issues that they had. All 5 starters return and all off season we were told how much better that group was going to be, but Spencer Rattler was under constant pressure the entire night never really got a chance to set his feet and throw. And I think it's a shame because there's a lot of talent. I think the most talent in the skill positions around the quarterback that South Carolina has had in a long time. But that is all a moot point if you can't protect. The biggest plays he made were scramble plays where I was able to keep it on the run and make some guys miss and allow receivers to uncover. So I think the difference is that very Odom's defense. They were flying around last week against Cincinnati. I think the ball carriers for Cincinnati averaged like .26 yards before contact, and that does not bode well against the Carolina offensive line that really was not good in past protection or run blocking last week. So I'm going with Arkansas on this one, Paul. Tennessee and Pitt in Pittsburgh. This is my favorite game of the weekend. You know, ironic because I think that lost last year to pit was something that didn't sit well with the fans and said, well, with the players, it's one they felt like they could have had and let get away. But ironically, that was the change in the trajectory of this team. That's where we saw hinden hooker get inserted into the starting role from there, that offense has just been rolling. In fact, the last four ball games they've scored at least 45 points or more. I just don't see pit being able to one slow them down because of the tempo and the execution that the offense has. But two, I don't think they're going to be able to score with the Tennessee balls. I think they just got too much offense and this one gets a little bit of a reserve revenge served to the folks from Pitt. Why don't you other games before we get to the big one here in Nashville? Mississippi got a late game at Arizona, this game a little bit hard to figure out what have you figured out on this game. Two weeks in a row, right? I mean, I think Mississippi states suffering from what a lot of PAC 12 teams suffer from and that's not people here on the east coast being able to watch them because of the game ending so late due to weather last week. Will Rogers was amazing through the ball 49 times completed 78% of those passes, including 5 touchdowns. He's got a bunch of weapons around him that even though they're young by years, they've played a lot of football together. They played a lot of football in this offense and it's fun to watch the rhythm and everybody being on the same page. This thing's kicking it all cylinders right now. And I just don't think that Arizona is going to be able to score with what Mississippi state can do. Now obviously there's a great storyline with the quarterback for Arizona having committed to Mike leach at Washington state before leach left for starkville. But I just don't think as much as they probably improved in jet fish's second year there in Tucson. I don't think that they have the offense to score with what Mississippi state will be able to put up. And finally, the game here in Nashville, a chance for Vanderbilt to go three and zero on the season, Chris doering, you're going to make these fans happy or are you going to ruin their night? Yeah, this is the best story of the year so far for me. I mean, we were in Atlanta at media days. We heard all of these players talking about playing championship football. I think a lot of us laughed about that, but that's exactly what they've been doing. I mean, they've completely changed what they've done dynamically on offense and Mike Wright has a lot to do with that. Ten touchdowns in the first two ball games of the season. We know about his athleticism and speed. I think the thing to me though is the resiliency. We're in the past things have happened poorly for vandy and it's been a downhill spiral. I think

"Were very bundled up, but I don't know that it really I don't know that it gave people a great indicator of how tough you are because you look like a real baby out there. You know what, I'm gonna go down a little lower here so that you can't so that I can be on your same level. Oh my God. Good job. You're not gonna be able to get back up. I dare you to do the entire recipe. I dare you to the entire rest of the show like that. Wow, that was fun. Not heavy enough to make the thing go down like I have. Anyway, so yeah, no, I remember that when we were outside, you're probably so relieved to be inside, oh wow, wow, wow. Yeah, they're taking a different angle because they don't like that I went down so low. Anyway, Paul, what are you looking out for early in this game? Like what's really gonna make a difference? I'm pretty well fixated on stetson Ben at the fourth. Yeah. I just want to see if he can graduate to become the 5th by the end of the evening. And if he wins, there'll be a lot of fish consumed in Atlanta and Buckhead and Athens. He's a big part of it. I want to see if he's relaxed. Yeah. Defensive line from Georgia I think is predictable. And I have learned one thing about the George Alabama series. Don't get hung up on the early score. Yeah. I think this is going to overtime. I really do. The spreads two and a half Georgia's favored by two and a half points. To me, that's an overtime game. And.

"We were the first 6 people on the Paul bronze scholarship fund in 1981. So Richard, that was there was a lot of conversation about that at the other day, rocky about how nobody had done that that was the first that was one of a kind. As you know, no school ever done that before. Correct. That is correct. And that's how special that was. And again, you know, he was far forward thinking, thinking about the children of his players. And what he could do for those players, even after he was gone. You know, I mean, that's unbelievable. George fuse daughter in Kelvin croom's daughter came up and talked about they both very successful young women and they talked about the benefit of that scholarship. It is an incredible legacy and you're living proof of it. Absolutely. I'm about to retire with 36 years of teaching and coaching. I've paid my do. So this is probably gonna be it for me. Rocky, it's so great to reconnect. Thank you. Appreciate you. Thanks for taking care of yourself. Thanks so much. Let's continue with Gavin, who was in Tennessee. Hello, Gavin. Hey. Thank you Paul for taking my call. Thank you very much, Gavin. I was going to ask you, what do you think, like how you're wondering how who do you think would win the mission in game Friday? And what percentage is George has to win it? Well, I'm pretty confident in Georgia Gavin, but I'm more interested in what you think. You sound like a pretty smart football analyst. Give us your breakdown. I really honestly think Georgia will win. I think it was a few calls ago. It was that man. He was and he said that he would take in the Georgia was going to win the missing game. Yeah, so what do you think is going to be the key to the game before we wrap up here? What was that, Gavin? I'm sorry, I missed it. I really don't know. You know what? I wish more people would say what you just got through saying, because if you were, you asked me the question and I didn't know either. So I was hoping you would answer the question. So I didn't have to answer it, because for all the expertise, I think it's an extremely difficult game to predict because Georgia has all of us a little bit shell shocked right now. I could have told you four weeks ago how Georgia would be at Alabama or beat anyone, but now I'm not so certain, you take care of yourself and you enjoy the game. Thank you very, very much. We'll take a short break, a couple more minutes to go here in this hour and we are back after this..

"And we are back here on a Wednesday afternoon rocky is up next. Hey rocky. Hey, Paul. Thanks for taking my call. Thank you. First up, first time caller, always a long time listener. Thank you very much. Now I was a manager on coach Bryant came that year and it was so balmy that 21°. I've never been to Alaska, but I don't think I've ever been that cold working a game before in my entire life. Rocky and the crazy thing is, I mean, we're in Memphis, Tennessee, which is not exactly the North Pole. No. I've told the story many years ago, but I'll tell it again, as you remember, the fourth quarter lasted an hour, at least. And oh my gosh. Stupid me. This was before you could just look at your phone, weather app. I didn't even check the weather. I went to the game wearing a sport coat and oh my God. I was on the sideline and so we watched the end of the game and I was a young reporter, I thought this was the biggest story of my life, that nothing would ever be more significant than coverage. So then we go to coach Bryant's farewell press conference as you remember, very famous moment. Correct. When he invited everybody to come by and see him afterward. And so then I go up to the press box, rocky, it's about a quarter to 12 and the deadline is midnight. But arrogant me, I knew that there weren't a print to pay for without my article. And I sat down to type and my hands were frozen, and I could not move them. Surprised me. So I went into the Instagram thinking I could get some hot water naturally that did not happen. So it took me at least it took me about 20 minutes before I could even move my hands to type the bear bride final game article. And I'll never forget that day as you tell me I'll be quiet here. I want to hear what it was like on the sideline as that game was looking desperate for a long time. Well, like you said, coach errands even made a statement that I can't repeat on the air about how we better win this F in game, you know, but that's the famous person from Tampa, by the way. That's correct. Yeah, that was his personal manager. I was his manager when he was coaching the running backs, but it was so cold. It was survivable. And of course, Jeremiah and got him Stan gay a couple of great place to talk the ball loose to keep Illinois out of the end zone and I actually have that ball here in my house. And I was one of two of the ball boys. Oh yeah. You know, you can't let history pass you by when you have opportunities like that. But it was super super cold. People who were not there just don't understand how cold it was. 39 years later, I'm still trying to figure out where coach Bryan got that Parker. He looked like he was. He was running for the game. I can assure you. He's had it in his locker. We had to pack it for him. I don't know. He knew something that we didn't know, but we packed all that gear for him before we went up there. So he apparently knew something. But I got to tell this quick story. The day after the game was really interesting. My balls told me to get on the elevator and go downstairs, and they don't coach to come out. When we got ready to go to the airport, we know how everybody was trying to get a big story from everybody they could. Well, the media had the media had cornered Billy varner his personal bodyguard in the corner of the main lobby. So I go down the elevator and I'm waiting for coach Bryant, me and another manager, and we walk over. And I may not have 40 people got Billy cornered and got all the microphones and type of quarters in his mouth. Saying, hey, was it like his personal party art? And here comes coach Brown how the elevator. And so coach Brad walks up with us. I'm walking with him and the reporters don't even see us and coach hollers out barely. I'm gonna go get the car and bring it around. I have never seen a 55 year old man run that fast to go get the personal car. That is hilarious. That was oh, I'm telling you. I thought he was going to ride on the bus with us. But he still had that Chevrolet blue Chevrolet Impala. He wanted to ride in all time. I guess Billy drove it from tuska Lisa. But that's what he wrote to the airport. But yeah, for him to haul out, Billy. You just keep on talking. I'm on pull the car around. That was a funny moment I'm telling you. The day before I alluded to this, he invited some of the some of the older sports writers up to his suite for some. You say that, yeah. And I want to make it clear 39 years later, my name's on the story in the archives, but I was not invited. But my boss was Claude Bolton. Bill lumpkin. And okay, I love that. I can say this now because we buried Bill this June, Bill wanted to go down there like have a tidy or two and laugh with coach Bryant and he knew he brought me along as his young reporter because I was there to work. I wasn't there to say farewell. So I had my notebook out and wrote really an amazing story about what went down. We were up there an hour hour and a half. It's a member of the suite at the river on hotel overlooking the Mississippi. The funniest thing is Billy was in there and coach Bryan was hungry. And he brought him over some you remember like some cheese and bread or crackers. I don't know what it was. And I looked at it and he looked at me, he said, this is for me. You're not up here for lunch. Is it to say, I know you weren't invited. You're just here as the courier for your boss. But it was one of the most I mean, he was very reflective that day. He talked about why he had continued I think I had asked him I said, did you ever consider leaving the year before after you won the 315th game? And he explained why he didn't. And you understand this, he said, if I had left, what was going to happen to everybody on that staff and all the managers and people like Billy, there were and he stuck around because at a loyalty, I think he was sick. You knew he was sick. And he knew. And that's basically like in those moments that you saw him, rocky. Well, people don't understand Paul and you've been an old Memphis native. Of course you are, aren't you? Well, you know, I'm from New Yorker, but I was born in Memphis. Okay. Well, coach brunt, he had a soft side. When he came to football and between the lines and everything, he was hard notes. I mean, absolutely. Working for him. I mean, you had to be on your P's and Q's even work inform. But I can remember a practice that 81 season. A little boy from saint Jude's had called the secretary and asked for coach if he could come up and visit with the boy. And in the middle of practice, coach left and got on the plane. And went up there and visited that boy. I mean, we just kept on practicing. We had coaches. It could handle practice. And people don't realize he did stuff like that. He would go do things for people and he'd fly back and be there the next day for practice like nothing ever happened. So people don't know how soft hearted and how generous he was. I was one of the first members of the Paul Brian scholarship fund. Pat trembles son and thread sanctions daughter and myself. My dad was Tommy white..

"With that guy for a week. I went to Rome with them as well for a week during their spring break trips. I've seen the way the players have responded to him. I've seen the way that he interacts with them. And this isn't the first year that he's had a dynamic impact, but I will tell you, having spoken with the players, 800, who's probably going to be the number one pick in the giraffe. Heisman finalist. Josh Ross, who wants to leave a great legacy alongside his brother, that Michigan. They read social media. They saw all the speculation and all the criticism that Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan may be short after a really difficult two and four miserable 2020 season. They read it all. They saw it. I mean, ain't Hutchinson said to me, I hate that he has to deal with that. It's actually much more sweet than we did what we did this year so that we could silence those critics. And they're aware of all the narrative. They know. And they also know that they're up for quite a challenge against Georgia. And not only is it a great Georgia team, but a really hungry one. Let me come back and wrap up with that hunger because you said it a minute ago and they're putting up a good front or whatever whatever they're putting up, you know it's killing them inside. Do you have any better understanding from talking to them being around Georgia, what happened in Atlanta? No, I don't. But it was interesting to hear Kirby smart say today that I've said this about Alabama all year. I've said it on your show too. When they got M it was such a wake up call for players who didn't understand how fickle all this can be. How fleeting all this can be. And Kirby smart said today, getting hit in the mouth by Alabama might have just been what some of his players needed to realize it's a one game season. Like if we don't come out and play our absolute optimum level. And have the utmost respect and preparation for what the opponent is trying to do will get beat. And it is a one game season. And this amazing year that we've had Kenny and just like that. And so I don't know if they know what happened against Alabama, but they got beat up. And that's been the narrative in Athens. Interview Bailey for that piece. I told you that feature we did on Kirby smart. And he said something about the more they win, the more pressure it becomes, because the expectation now is elite excellence in Athens, Georgia. They just haven't won at all yet. And the big reason is Alabama. Marty Smith live in Miami. We'll be hearing a lot more from Marty as the week begins to head toward Friday afternoon. Marty, many thanks. Thank you. "Meteorology careers adapt. I used to be able to handle cold. 70 pounds heavier. I used to be able to handle the two and I don't know what happened, but I hate it now. Is there anything less than 60? I'm out. 60s my limit. I'm trying to find the perfect locale for that. Shouldn't they get you like a hater underneath? Well, not it's funny. My madri asked Laura, if she wanted a heater for tomorrow morning, meanwhile, I'm sitting here turning into a cadaver. Y'all talking about me shaven. I picked a stupid time to do. Let's get that this is obviously not a hillbilly headline here, but what's the deal? We got home from Knoxville and my beard was itchy. And so I was like, you know, it's been a while. I'm going to turn it down so I trimmed it way down with like a tremor. And then I was in the shower and I was like, you know what? It's probably been 8, 6, 7, 8 years since I had a clean shaven face, and I wanted to look like Paul found ball. So I busted out the bacon went to work and it's the most polarizing thing we got here this morning. There's already a lot of public discourse on them. Yes, it's been great unrest. And work for like your Luke combs crew. One thing about me though, man, I'm like a chia pet. I can have a beard and two or three days. So don't worry. It will be back. I would I had one for a long time. How'd that go? Why did you shave it off? I'd rather not admit this, but I was on trial. You had heard from some people. It's true. We were working in a newspaper, not too far from here. And we were sued by someone and they had me shave for the trial. And then one of the lawyers tried to be a smart alley. He said, mister fehn bomb, you look a little different than you did, but we saw you at your deposition. I said, yes. He said, you had a beard. I said, I think you did too. And lawyers like, don't start. Just don't talk. Don't be a smart out. Only speak when spoken to me. I got ream for that afterwards. We did win the case, by the way, but that's all that matter. But yeah, I never go one back after that. I think I lost ten. I think aesthetically, I lost ten years. I still have a lot of gray hair, but you do look like you're younger. Yeah. I might keep it like looking younger. A 30 year old now. I'll take it. 30 better and 45. They're giving me a Cal down here. I don't even remember what we were talking about, but what's our count? Where are we? Where we got two and a half minutes. Two and a half minutes. Okay. Well, I can tell you. I was in Athens on Wednesday. Doing a big feature on Jordan Davis for the SEC championship here in a couple weeks. But while I was down there I sat down instead some Ben. Oh great. And had a conversation with him about, you know, his path is so interesting. And he's played so well this year. And I'm going to tell you some of you. Have you interviewed him on this show? I don't think so. You've interviewed everybody. I'mma tell you something. When this interview airs on SEC, SEC nation tomorrow, you guys are going to be taking aback at his honesty. I was about I'm trying not to give away too much, but basically when you ask him about where this season would live in his wildest dreams as a kid who grew up dreaming of being the Georgia bulldogs quarterback. He said, look, you wouldn't. You wouldn't pick me at YMCA. I mean, look, basically, we're almost the same size. So that's an enemy. We're not that different. I mean, he's probably more muscular. Maybe just a but we got our joy. You were not that different. He was just so honest about his positioning and his self confidence, his self confidence abounds, and then when you talk to his teammates about him, they would follow that dude into the fire. And it's palpable throughout the entire program. You know, he sat behind from him, went to juco came back, JT Daniel shows up. He said, you know, and all he has done is won. Undefeated SEC slate and a team that looks like it's certainly capable of winning the national championship. And he's grown his skill set. He talked about that. Why he's a better player now? It was just really fascinating to me to get to spend the time with him and learn from him in a very direct way about the season that he's had and kind of what that looks like. So I can't wait for you guys to see that. Tomorrow morning on SEC nation, I can not wait to, well, thanks. That was worth getting a prelude to Marty. Thank you, beardless, the beardless Marty Smith joining us here. And our podcast ESPN daily, we ask questions that reveal the deeper side of sports. Did you hear from a certain former president? "For his longevity that he beat Alabama? I'll go back to my magie would understand this better because you're broadcasting guy. I don't mean that the wrong way, but newspaper guys always think about the obituary. You know I came up in newspapers too. I apologize. I think I've done a lot more newspaper writing than he has, in fact. You know what, the more I think about McGee is not really the dot com guy. Okay. Well, you understand this then. I'll just excise everything I just got through saying. You think about the old bit. Jimbo Fisher, not the old bit, but maybe the old bit to his career when he retires. It's Jimbo Fisher comma, who led Texas a and M to whatever. And Phoenix. First line. For first assistant to ever be. Unequivocally. It's that important. I think that that loss for Nick Saban was the worst thing that could have happened for the rest of the conference. Because all those young men he said at all season before they lost. All those young men, it's so difficult to impart upon them that you can lose when all they know is winning all the time. And maybe they were griping a little bit that all they did was play special teams. The younger players. Maybe they were complaining and I'm not getting enough run on the offense or the defense. Well, then you give up a house call. As a kick-off team and Texas a and M returns a kick-off, however many yards it was for a touchdown. All of a sudden, you go, oh, okay, this can happen. And then they get beat. They get the busby. And now they know that can happen. So I think that's dangerous for everybody else in the conference because now coach has a body of work and context to say look, y'all didn't show up to play and you got beat. Okay, we're out of time. Next time I see I want to read those newspaper clips. I want to know you do not a young martyr. I'm going to light them all on fire. I don't need anybody reading my writing when I want to read Marty Smith, the newspaper man. It was unfortunate. Thank you more. Appreciate your brother..

"You know what? I think I got to ask my husband. Can my husband come with us? Laura, can I educate Laura when you're at Oxford? You don't ask your husband about things like this. Oh. You just go, right? Okay, all right, then I'll go. There are no rules. He goes to he goes to Oxford high school, right? The Chargers. Yeah. They've got a big game tonight against starkville. So we'll see who wins. That sounds not like the egg bowlers. They said it's the little egg ball. There's a little egg. Isn't that great? I love that. Oh, wow, guys. You know what's a fun fact about me? I never actually got asked to prom, really by anybody. So I went I only went to one prom and it was with my brother's friend. Laura, hold on. Well, I don't know. Aren't you supposed to go to a couple? Oh, we used to say. Stop the presses. Okay, but back in 1945. That's when you were at your first job. Not when I was going to prom. I want to know this is true, Paul. So you're Laura's Laura McKinnon. Your Laura McKeon and where? Well, we lived in Orlando. Now, I had spent some time doing ballet stuff and China. But Japan no, China, but anyway, I never had an offer really to go to prom. You did not have a date to prom. No, and so my brother's friend a lovely young man, it was like, all right, well, he'll take you, so we went. You think imagine all those guys back in Orlando right now going to take in Laura mckeeman, first of all, your name was all wrong. I'm stop. I know. What should it have been? Well, so the reality is, like, obviously, my husband's amazing, but I totally the name was a big plus in getting married. I was like, I can't change this name fast enough. I love mckim though. This is my heritage. I think it's the main reason why you were never asked a prom. Well, Paul, if you saw me at the time, you might feel different. I had cut my own bangs. I know you probably did that too. But I cut my own bangs. It didn't go very well. My mom was mortified. It was like, oh no, now we gotta, you know, so then I had famous Toby Keith song from like 30 years ago, how do you like me now? How do you like me? Yeah. Well, here's the reality. I will now experience my first prom as actually being asked here in Oxford apparently. I don't know, when prom and when is it? Promise usually in the springtime. I said, I think you said it's in January. All right, so I gotta figure out how to get back here. That'll be fine. Okay, we'll let you get we'll let you get premium proper for prom. We are heading to a breaker, but you want to come with me too. You want a third wheel? I'm not even sure I went to my own prom. I grew up just down the road. You asked somebody? I was so far gone. I wanted to get out of there. Full. I was matching you going away. I asked 14 women to my problem. And they all said that. He ran out of corsages because he had so many prom dates. We were coming right back. You were listening to the call, fine bomb show podcast. What a place to be in the grove bad money. Marty Smith joining us. Look at you, man. They put your name in life. Whoever thought. I will be a 100% honest with you, sir. Every single week, our great friend Steve Keller, who does our steady steady cam. He sends me a photograph of when they put Marty and McGee in the jumbotron every week. And I just will never get used to that. That's just crazy to me. It's a nice little photo album. I know you're used to it. Yeah, it's a great photo. I will say the first time I saw that, it was like, I'm not sure it's quite the same as having your name in Broadway lights. I would like to see that once, but I mean, there's a 100,000 people in these football stadiums. So it's pretty big. Yeah. Well, I'm not sure. Are they up during the games? I do know that they ran the Jimbo Fisher Marty and magee commercial during a game. Not field. Yeah. Yeah, I spoke prematurely to give us a whole rash and a grief and I don't understand. I couldn't resist because will must have gone. Essentially, who's next? None of us expected a and M to win that game. So you guys blew it. So we're really glad that they wanted those. So now there can't be, we're not doing your commercials because of the funny. What was that like when you did a commercial? Man, it was so fun. It was really fun. We spent two days one in just outside of College Station where Jimbo's ranch is and that ranch is unbelievable. 800 plus acres, I think, and he's so proud. He's not leaving. I mean, that's what we were saying. If you go to that ranch and you look off his back porch, there's an old, it was like an original farmhouse on this ranch. Years and years and years ago. And he refurbished it. They had it done. It's stunning inside. And if you walk all the way through it into the back, there's this gorgeous deck porch that overlooks heaven. Is that where he lives? That's just where he gets away. Okay. And this where guys that make 9 a year get away. I wondered about that because I'm a single family dweller. I don't have any anything else other than the one little but we have. He was so proud to show us where he put us in a gator and he wrote us all over the land and showed us at all. The river runs right through his property. And he showed us the best. I'm like, I love hunting fish, and so he was showing us all the best spots where he his food plots and his deer stands and it was just awesome to witness. And so yeah, I don't know why he would leave. Yeah, I mean, people close to him just are absolutes. There's just no way. And I believe that. What do you think is the impact.

"It almost did, right? The ball just off of Cedric Tillman's hands. It looked like he could hardly jump anymore. I mean, they ran so many plays, everybody on the field was gassed. So really fun one. So we had kitten on here two hours ago and the indications are pretty strong that Matt corral is going to be in the starting lineup. But what type of physical shape do you think is? Well, I was joking with Tim earlier. I was Tim, you won't know what this feels like because when you ran the football you were 250 pounds. I was right around Matt's size about 200 pounds. So and I did run the ball a lot, my junior year. I remember waking up on Sundays and Mondays, I couldn't lift my arms. Couldn't practice on Mondays. It couldn't walk through on Sundays, like it's just a great offensive line though. Well, yeah. I mean, I might sit there in a little different, you know? But I can imagine that that was what it was like. I mean, I had Mondays where I'm like, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to play. So imagine that's how corrall felt. I imagine that's what lane saw. And as the week goes on, you start to loosen up. Start to feel better. Now I will say, that should affect the game plan. I don't expect we see Matt crowell run the football 30 times. I do expect if he does run, he has had it pounded into his head that he needs to get down and protect himself. 'cause he's a competitor. He'll put his shoulder down and he'll run somebody over if he needs to, but that doesn't need to be them. For me, I wasn't as good of a passer as corrall. So we needed my legs for our offense get going. He can play from the pocket as good as anybody. I think he's the best player in the country. So this game plan will adapt with a healthy ish, Matt corral. I think less running the football, more ball control to mimic that run game. And I think they'll be just as effective. Let me ask you about another quarterback who's critical to his team's success tomorrow. And that's hindon hooker. As Alabama, probably licking their chops after they saw that the punishment he took last week. I know everybody is somewhat low key about his condition, but you saw it. It didn't look good. And I've kind of heard that he's trending in the right direction. Obviously, whatever that final decision is or even more importantly how long he can play in that game if it was kind of a close call. There's nobody more important to Tennessee. Nobody more important to that offense, but nobody more important to that football team than hen and hooker right now. I mean, his as soon as he was injected into the starting lineup, the efficiency, the accuracy at that position allowed the run game to flourish. It just complemented it so well. And if you think that with a healthy or healthy enough hand in hooker team, that Tennessee can't put up points against Alabama, you are wrong. They can and will score points of Texan M can put up 41 on Alabama. Tennessee can score some points now. Now, to what extent handen hooker's healthy will be a big one, but I tell you what, I walked away from that Tennessee game. Not just impressed with the offense. I know they didn't have their best day. But that defense is so improved. And it's unbelievable they lost everybody in the transfer portal. They're middle of the road statistically in the SEC. But they're a stingy defense. They play tough, they rallied to the football. There's not really much star power, but they're a team that's going to make it difficult on bright showing. It's not going to be a day where he can walk in there and just throw it all over the place or run the football. Brian Robinson is going to run all over them. They might get theirs eventually, but they're going to make it tough on them. So hen and hooker and his health could make it interesting. You've talked to Josh hypo quite a bit this year. I'm curious for those who are saying, well, okay, we'll handle hooker so good. Why did it take so long? What is the explanation? I'll say it like this then because Joe Milton's more talented than hen and hooker. But hen and hooker in talking to hypo. He's like, there's a few things we didn't know in practice. You don't know how tough a kid is. Right. And hooker's extremely tough. And you really don't know how he handles true pressure and can he stay accurate under pressure. Milton couldn't. Hen and hooker absolutely can. He's been accurate under pressure. Two things you can't really simulate the way you want to and practice. So that staff didn't know what they had. Now, look, is he the perfect fit for this Josh hyper offense? Probably not, because you would like to be able to stretch the field more vertically, so I drew lock to it at Missouri. This offense thrives having a big arm quarterback that can't push it downfield, but also can be accurate enough to compliment the run. He's just so efficient right now that that's the best thing going. So it took so long because henon hooker is not like a crazy, unbelievably talented superstar. This is a good football player. And he's good in this system. I think hypo is done a good job of managing what he does well and not asking him to do things like push the ball downfield, things that he's maybe not as good at. Everything you've talked about so far is on the field. The intangible a lot of people are asking back to Oxford as we close down is how does LSU prepare how they prepared for this game and what do we expect from them? Because they have been a team that has been very uneven. And I don't know. So I'm asking somebody who may have an insight. I'll tell you what. I think the biggest thing that has been missing from, let's say the 2019 team. Everybody likes to compare it to that. So let's just compare it to that. The leadership on the field, right? The leadership that can take ownership of the team, the culture and move, not move on without a head coach, it's not what I mean, but move, not need the head coach to drive everything, right? They weren't quite there. What I saw last week was a team that their physicality, their intensity, their focus was completely ramped up..

"Some down time waiting for the cameras to set up or whatever and we got onto the eagles and he. He went fifteen twenty minutes on on his favourite eagles music. And i which was clearly my era and it was like i. I'm talking to nick. Saban about the eagles. What's your favorite eagles. So one of these nights. It's great man. They're also they're like when you are a band that is timeless for a half century like that and it's just as good right now as it was back. Then what a remarkable legacy and the talent. I mean you just lay out the names of the talent. It's i'm curious though. Because i know how close you are a couple of guys you country and when you're with these guys and we're talking famous names what are you talking about. We talk about all kinds of different things. It depends on who the individually is but a couple of them with whom. I'm very close. We talk about eric. Church did the forward to marty's book. Low that man. He's had such an amazing influence on my life and inspired me in ways. Very few people have just his dogged determination unwillingness to pander and be exactly who he is labels opinions be damned. I me this is the music. I'm gonna make this way. I'm going to do it. And i'm not gonna waiver. Learned a lot from him and been inspired by that but like i was just with him a couple of weeks ago and i love to learn his perspectives on business. He just started a new tower. And it's a whole new thing. He's now in what they call around. Basically there's a circle stage in the middle of the arena and he plays all four sides of it which is an exhausting prospect. He placed thirty eight forty. He hit the opening night in rupp arena. He played forty five songs. Played almost four hours. The next night is when laney. And i saw him in columbus. When you and lift gainesville. I went on to make because we were about an hour and a half late. We walked in about when he was starting so he played thirty eight songs at night. I mean it's a track. Meet man. And i just love learning how to negotiate that how he coordinates set lists. What's inspiring him as a writer. In that moment all of those things captivate me and you are bliss that we get to ask people questions for a living and i wear his tail and out him stapleton luke combs all those guys whereabout out. Because again i show i. I look into a camera sometimes sitting in a sterile room. You know we do what we do on saturdays. But i mean these guys they know when they're relating to the crowd and they i mean i i would say they would. They're devastated if they're not relating. That's correct there's an energy exchange that is it's this beautiful moment when you can see it and i love to watch like you take stapleton okay. In his shows now he will stop singing when when he singing the song fire away he will simply stop and let the people take over and they will put up their cell phones with their lights on and i was there probably saw about a month ago lane. He's going to see them tonight. In philly in cannon new jersey and he will stop seeing it and there's twenty five thousand people that are engaged in that moment. They're living in that moment. They're not on their phones. They're using their phones to light up the corralled and it's just beautiful energy that you just don't get everywhere every day unless you're them.

"They don't have a kennedy a boa. Who had a couple of big plays in that game from the tight end position. But the problem is i don't think they need that for alabama is with how dantonio drama is playing on the inside berlin anders on the outside and really their most important pieces snoop connor and jerry and ely. I mean they're so interchangeable in how they can attack you how they can line up. Matt corral is playing better than anybody in the entire country. He's unbelievable what using his eyes to look defenders off. It's going to be a tall task. Nick sabin have a great plan. But they're gonna give points and so the other side you ask. What did they learn from the florida game. I think what alabama learns. Is that florida setback in zone coverage they didn't blitz rice young you blitz. He's gonna hurt ya. He is so far beyond a freshman young quarterback that you can't bring pressure he'll make you pay so. They learned that they have to be able to play action. They have to go to run the football and play action to hit those shots. They didn't have a play longer than thirty hours on. Offense gets florida because florida just sat back and they said eventually you're going to make a mistake or you're going to get bored i think. That's what all missile do. But can they slow down run. We're talking to jordan rogers and enjoy. Let's go to flip it over to to bryce showing side of the ball and you saw them here last week. You saw them a couple of weeks ago You hear the talk show criticism. He doesn't move. Push the ball down the field. He doesn't run he. I know you're very high on him. But what would concern you in a game like this. Well i think he does push the ball downfield again. I think florida just said we're taking away and right you can't just A good quarter. He's not going to throw it into double coverage. So i mean you can't blame him for that. What the most important piece for them was jalil billions lee last week getting out of the doghouse. He was in the doghouse. I mean he was deep in the doghouse for a lot of reasons off the field. Nick sabin was alluding to that. But what you saw against other miss. I think what you'll see against. Ole miss is that they're gonna take away jameson williams and john right double cover them deep play over the top. Now you have a dynamic speedster tight end gelo billions. That's when those over routes opened up. That's when he becomes available in that fifteen to twenty five yard range so bryce young is so good at seeing the defense evaluating appre snap seen at po snap almost has got to be physical. They gotta hit them. They're gonna make it tough on him. You're not going to slow him down completely but you can make this a physical game. Get some hits on him. You might might be able to make a mistake. I'm not saying you're you're going to. That's the only way you're going to slow him down and in terms of. I think it was tim. Tebow came up here few minutes ago and talked about how he thinks. Everybody thinks we all got these random. You know we all know needs to grind it out are the alabama capable of everything. But how good are they doing that. Not great right. I mean they couldn't do it against florida florida's fronts better than ole miss but almost has some gritty players down there. Hal northerns player. Sam williams is playing at a high level as well. Quint givens down there. They got some players they need to grind it out. Yes but here would be my cautionary whatever you start to slow the game down. You better keep scoring. Yeah because all mess is like oh you want to slow the game. You want to give yourself less possessions. Great you know what i mean like. You gotta be careful with that you start to slow down too much almost going to hit you one or two times and then what happens if this is a one touch down ten point game in the first quarter and almost jumped out to a lead because you were grinding it out on the ground right now. How does bryce young play from behind a heck of a player. But he's got to be careful right. I mean your your your strength. Is your skill position talent. Still i think right so yes you can be physical but you still gotta find ways to get them the ball in space okay. We've we've talked Nearly nine minutes about this game and we could talk another ninety minutes but let me get a couple of quick thoughts on the game in athens. we had chris fowler on on the call. What what what. What's the key to this game. In terms of determining the winter yeah. I think it's going to be deep shots on both sides of the ball. If you look at arkansas they need to be able to take the shots to loosen up georgia front. But i will say my eyeballs are on georgia. Because i truly believe that we're going to find out if they are a national championship contending team or not. It's going to be based on the offense because arkansas is really good on defense. They're gonna do the same thing clemson did they're gonna play three safeties back. They're gonna they're gonna play over the top and they're going to say we're not gonna let you take those shots you're going to have to grind out this game in georgia didn't do that well. Their best player was bowers week. One against clemson because they couldn't get over the top and cannot wasn't there a game so they need to be able to hit some shots downfield if they can't. I think that i don't. I don't think they're contender. So i'm looking at georgia. I know you're defenses elite but ken this offense believe how has that question been answered. Go all the way back to last year. It hasn't oh they're good. They're good at times. They hit big plays against inferior defensive players and schemes and against really good defenses. They've just been okay. So this is a good defense and this is a scheme that can beat georgia offense now. Can arkansas score enough points. Because i don't think you're on the ball. Field is their strength either so that will determine who can hit a few big chunk. Plays through the air. And that'll tell me if georgia is a team that set up to actually make a legitimate run at it. We're not always great to have jordan on thank you jordan. Fantastic analysis over. She had a bone. I liked tyler. Look today let's go. I may just how. I love all four hundred and fifty ties i am. "In a small room with about one hundred and fifty people. This explaining lauren here next week. Pray for us. Please pray for and i. It was pretty stifling to to our crews credit they got your show on and they got to show their amazing paul. I wondered what it would be like for you to come here after. All of your really strong takes favoring alabama this week. Has anyone said anything. I don't think any of these people know that guys. He what did you say alabama's gonna win by three touchdown. I never said that. Oh i did not. I never said three touch guy. I said somewhere between two and three touchdowns yeah. I predicted this game. And i say a bunch of stuff during the week when i'm on shows like like laura gets i just throw stuff out but i very well he might you gotta tune in scc nation to find out. Paul paul is going to have calls pick at the end of the show last week. Your pick was pretty dramatic. You were right by the way arkansas one through that texas helmet. Here's the part that i'm uncomfortable with so it was a spur of the moment deal. I anyone who wants it knows it wasn't scripted doing. I also thought you weren't going to get the helmet off the manic. Yeah you're really strong here. I am in front of millions of people. And i'm like what if the helmet off. Wow on picking arkansas a big in texas. I'm picking george did was. I grabbed the for those who didn't see it. I don't know how you couldn't it's been it's viral. It's been everywhere. Fourteen four billion views. Absolutely aliens have seen it. I picked it up. And i threw a helmet. This is an official. I don't know what kind of a bad the university of texas was going to wear. That helmet yeah so you joke with me. I'm at the airport. The wasn't joking. And you said that's gonna cost you helped. Paul you're gonna have to pay for it. We have been invoice for that help. Get here today in. Gainesville this backstage at sec nation. And i find out that the university of texas yeah. It's through the university of texas which is worth more than saudi arabia. We've gotten very international here with some of sending us. A bill is yeah. Let's let's say that helmet. They've got it on. I just want to set this story up For those who missed it. End of the show. I make a prediction here. It is see. That's where i thought you weren't going to get it up. Oh you got it though. Good job paul and then boom oh okay. So so laura. I throw a helmet into a parking lot. Yeah how much. I'm not try. I mean i am so happy. The university of texas coming into the sec. We can't wait. And i've read that. May they may spend sixty or eighty million dollars to get out of there. You're paying for their health down today. You you you go ahead and tell. Tell the audience where you told me at our meeting. Yes so i mean. I asked about it because to me. This is the thing these are the things that entertain me as you. Well know anything. That's going to be funny with paul molin like where are we out on this helmet. Oh yeah we've been invoiced so that bill is going to now. Here's what i don't know. I don't know how much it costs like. A couple of hundred dollars. Yeah do you have that you want me to. I don't here's what. I don't understand so not to turn this into a clinical analysis like wall street week. The dow jones was up one hundred. The market's already closed today. We're good good okay. If i damaged that helmet by throwing it out what was going. What would have happened if texas offensive lineman had been wearing it as the arkansas razorbacks blew them. Paul savage savage. So basically what you're saying is you did them a service right. I don't know how someone of my physique. Paul throwing a helmet as eight feet now. I heard it did roll where it is it rolled. Why would the damage damage the helmet. Well so because here's here's what you don't realize you actually have brute strength you actually as much as it may look like. We have the same size arm. You are way stronger than what's actually put our arms together. I think the same size ears a reality. you're stronger than you realize. I've seen it when it comes to moving barricades with your bare hands and throwing helmets and by the way. We're gonna have to see what you do tomorrow. You may be actually wrestling with a gator later. You guys it's going to be great at the gator. Okay but anyway. I wanted to tell. I want to tell my friends at university of texas. I just said don't send. Espn two bill. Okay senate we out your ass. We don't want anyone to think. Espn in texas are in cahoots on anything. Oh send me the bill. And i will start a go fund me. Hey and i just donate a sneaking suspicion that from the state of arkansas we might get some donation we can raise the money walmart headquartered there. Tyson foods j. b. hunt trucking three fortune five hundred companies including the biggest retail company in the world. I think we're good. We're good by the way i'll put. I'll.

"marty smith" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"Great quarterback great pre snap. But he hasn't really been in a really adverse environment yet so that has to be a weapon because it will rally you a little bit as a quarterback and that has to be. Some florida leans into everyone talks about pumping and noise trying to simulate. Can you simulate this you can simulate. The noise and i was at an alabama practice last week where it was super loud. I mean it was annoyingly loud. i couldn't even have a conversation with cole cubelic standing next to me. But here's a thing. Noise and pressure are two different things. You can have noise at practice but it is absent of the pressure that a big moment brings here in the swamp. So florida has to simulate that noise but also they as a defense and as a team have to put pressure on bryce young so that that rattles him in some way right. It's not just noise. Noise by itself is nothing players deal with that all the time. it's all hand signals. It's not a big deal. The pressure that this defense and todd grantham puts on brace young has to accompany the noise. We spent all the time so far talking about this game. I want to zip through a couple of other games. Quickly We you can't. You can't simulate the white out either. What's auburn facing as they get off the bus and under that field tomorrow now. I mean it's it's a crazy environment and james franklin look he's really good at preparing his teams for the moment. You can have a lot of questions about how they've performed certain but he'll get his players ready and he'll have that environment ready. All eyes are going to be on bo knicks but would argue that. All the pressure is on mike. Bobo in a good way. Right because bo knicks has been bad on the road twelve of his thirteen career interceptions on the road. So mike bobo needs to make sure that bo knicks doesn't feel like he needs a throw on a superman cape to win this game. This game plan has to be centered around tank bixby muddy up this game. Make this a physical dirty football game. Make sure that bo knicks knows. I don't have to make these every crazy. Throw every pass. Play doesn't have to be a touchdown. He needs to play within the system in an order to do that. Mike bo was gonna make him comfortable. He's gotta had preached that all week and practice. He's gotta make sure that tank. Bixby is the focal point. Early to set the tone because otherwise bo knicks is going to get into a situation where he's going to make mistakes and if you make mistakes and turn the ball over there. That's how auburn loses game in athens. Carolina fans excited. They haven't been in a position like this in a while. They know they won their two years ago. What do they have to do to make this interesting tomorrow. Night is horn. Plan is miserable. Mclamb plan i think they're missing a few guys that really helped the last time they won that football game. Look this team and shane. Beamer has to just get a competitive fire outta this team because georgia's a much better football team georgia's gonna win this football game. Georgia has a lot of questions. South carolina needs to learn how to compete in these moments raised their level of play. Fine leadership find fire. But if i'm georgia can can i like can the real georgia offense stand up. Because i don't know who they are. And i don't frankly. I don't care stem bennett. I don't care if it's carson back. I don't care if it's jt daniels. I do not care. Show me who you're going to be against arkansas. Show me who. You're going to be against auburn. Show me who you're going to be at the end of the year because you can't just figure that out. Then are you gonna be a downhill play action based around your strength of the running backs. Are you going to be spread team when jt's healthy and back in the game. I don't know pick one because your defense is going to take you all the way but that offense is going to be what makes break you and right now i just i look at it and i go their best players. A tight end from napa california. He's a great player. But you got to focus on some of the other talent you have around. You build the offense to do so jordan rogers. Quite an interesting analysis. We'll see more jordan tomorrow morning on. Sec nation jordan. Thanks great stuff. We are back to gainesville in a moment. Steve spurrier an hour away. Everything's a journey for all of us right and and i've been to have had such a unique path at espn to a nascar specifically first and then doing reporting in college football and other sports throughout this entire thing and then hosting sec nation. A couple years ago. When laura was on maternity leave and and then last year doing sidelines during cove. And so i've i've had such a unique path and along the way a lot of insecurity and a when you realized that you're driven by ego. It's a very unique moment. And very revelatory for you. And then you're able to really kinda dissect dad and build yourself back up. So that's kind of been the journey and i'm just really full of gratitude to be here with with this group of people during this season and start with bama miami. I mean what's what's better than that. That was struck. A i know you. You talk to on. Initially she nation last night. But we brief conversation with lou combs. And i'm just listening long about how this song came came about. Yeah i want you to listen to it. I want you to get it to the sec. And i was like what so. Listen to it and i knew it was perfect. They wrote it specifically for the conference. And the end the tradition and the pageantry and the passion of the conference. So i took it to espn music and it went down the road. He calls me back. he said. Hey man you know that song. Call off the dogs. I wanna put it on my record. And i was like dude. I'm way down the line here and then last year. When i had cova during thanksgiving tom i was struggling. Not even want to is open. I was in so much pain. And my phone's ringing ringing ringing and our peak over at and it's him. And i answered. He's like what you doing. I said man. I got code. Don't feel good what do you want. He said south on you. Let's get it to the sec. We've been down this road and we really went down the road. Tom mccollum and pete waters our bosses at the sec network and we really put it into full throttle. they love the messaging. They love the vibe. And here we are. He's the official song of our network this season and it's just awesome because he is just his whole thing. His whole brand is very se and so. I'm just thrilled that it worked out for him. And we're going to have that song on esi nation every saturday morning school i. I'm pretty I know everybody has a friend or two. That's that knows somebody but the the number the number of people that you know. I'm with you a couple of years ago. I'm trying to get back to you know. Get home in time for you. "That Medina spirit the winner of the Kentucky Derby, is cleared to race and Saturday's Preakness Stakes after the Kentucky Derby where Medina Spirit one a drug test revealed a therapeutic in Medina Spirits System, which is banned on race day. Fame's trainer Bob Baffert, who trained Medina Spirit revealed that the horse tested positive. Elevated levels of beta methods own. Baffert released a statement on May 11 saying that Medina Spirit had been treated for a skin condition with an ointment that contained the substance. Quote Medina Spirit earned his Kentucky Derby win and my far masala gist, sir, have told me that 21 people grams of better methods, Sone would have no effect on the outcome of the race. Baffert previously said in a statement. Medina Spirit is a deserved champion and I will continue to fight for him. After this Medina spirit went through subsequent tests that came back clean. And therefore is able to race in the Preakness. Marty and McGee host Marty Smith talked on SportsCenter with El Duncan about the situation and also how Baffert is essentially battling himself in this race when it comes to the Triple Crown. I've been texting all week long with Bob Baffert Ale back and forth. I did reach out to him after this ruling came down, asked him if he had any comment. And he said, Right now he feels like it's best to keep his comments to himself. The less he says, the better. Certainly I respect that now because concert tour and Medina spirit are now eligible for the Preakness. That means Baffert is now racing against himself for Triple Crown history, of course, since he trains both of those horses if concert tour were to win the Preakness here on Saturday that eliminates Medina spirit from a Triple Crown opportunity earlier this week, I had the opportunity to talk with Jimmy Barnes about that. Who's here? Training the horses on Baffert's behalf, and I asked him What's it like for one horse to be racing against another one. A Triple Crown is on the line, he said, Man, It's not a challenge it all. It's

Noose found in Bubba Wallace's garage stall, NASCAR says

"Now? Mike Greenberg Bristol with you this morning. And as I said right off the top of the show, I would have loved to have started with any of those today, and we certainly will get to the mall, but we begin with an absolutely despicable story coming from the world of NASCAR. In this developing story, a noose was found in bubba Wallace's. Stall at the NASCAR race in Talladega Alabama yesterday less than two weeks after Wallace led efforts to push NASCAR to ban the confederate flag NASCAR announced the news last night well after the race had been postponed due to inclement weather, and said it was launching an immediate investigation here. was there statement late this afternoon? Nascar was made aware that a noose was found in the garage stall of the forty three eighteen. We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough. How seriously we take this heinous act! We have launched an immediate investigation and we'll do everything we can to identify the persons responsible and eliminate them from the sport. As we have stated unequivocally, there is no place for racism and NASCAR, and this act only strengthens our resolve to make the sport open and welcoming to all while himself tweeted a statement last night, which read in. In part today's despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened, and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism. As my mother told me today, they are just trying to scare you. This will not break me. I will not give enor- rely back down. I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe. In Allah Marty Smith is covering this for us in the scene in Talladega. He joined us an hour ago. The News in Bubbas garage stall was actually seen by a member of his team. Darrell Bubba never saw it. He never saw it personally and win. That team members saw it. He alerted NASCAR. And Nascar immediately had a meeting of its senior executive staff, and they made the decision that they were going to remove this person from the sport as quickly and rapidly as possible. This was not a situation where a fan might have meandered in on this because there were no fans in the garage. So what you're looking at is you're looking at team members. You're looking at officials. You're looking at potential security. You're looking at maybe cleaning personnel that have access to these garage areas. Again! That was Marty Smith with US earlier. Lebron James among many who posted messages about this. He tweeted sickening Wallace, my brother! No, you don't stand alone I'm right here with you as well as every other athlete, I just want to continue to say how proud I am of you for continuing to take a stand for change here in America and sports at Nascar. I salute you as well. Well Sprint Cup driver Michael McDowell added. God help us the level of evil. It takes to do something like this is disgusting. This is enraging and heartbreaking all at the same time Dale. EARNHARDT Jr. tweeted simply a hope of a wins it tomorrow again. The race will be run today. It was delayed by weather yesterday, and as I bring Steven A. and Marcus into the conversation here I'll. Repeat that the area in which this was discovered, there were cameras all over it should be. Relatively easy investigation for the NASCAR officials to conduct, and we are standing by for any information live from Talladega Marty Smith will bring us anything as soon as there is any further news with that thought in mind, Stephen. We've not yet had a chance to say good morning to you I. I just want to give you the floor here. What are your feelings and thoughts as we see this story developed from last night? Well I. Mean I think that for me? Personally I'm a little bit different than the kind of sentiments that have been expressed by a lot of people, because obviously you find this reprehensible and disgusting, and it's incredibly sad, and we get all of that but there's a forgive the the figurative smirk that might end up covering my face or draping my face because to me. Me It's just folks displaying the ignorance, and the more they put it on display, the more it enlightens a lot of people in White. America about what Black America has been telling them about for so many years decades spanning centuries for crying out loud. This is not new. This is something that we've known existed for all time. This is something we know we'll continue to exist. And there is no way around it and so this there comes a point in time where you have to accept that reality one of the things that I would encourage everybody to go watch. If you get an opportunity, you can go on Netflix. You can watch that documentary thirteen by EVA do vernay along with others, sensational job of address mass incarceration in the United States, of America one of the things they highlighted. Is that under the Nixon? Administration where you're literally talking about you know White folks that are hippies and you associate them with marijuana and you associate black. Black folks with crack cocaine, and as a result of that will ultimately galvanize folks in your favor, because they'd be scared to death, and you'd be hearing words like law and order ad, nauseam that was in the sixties for crying out loud in two thousand and twenty, and we're hearing the same thing now. You just have to open your eyes. You have to pay attention to the parallels you have to. You have to pay attention to the correspondence. That's taking place right before your very eyes throughout history, we have had people that have been adroit at light laying low. Controlling the narrative, manipulating the narrative switching things to their favor, all in an effort to maintain or to retain power. It's something to kind of thing that has been taking place in. Usually they've been incredibly skilled at remaining in the dark and saying it's then it's not us, it's them. It's not us well guess what are coming to light more and more in this day and age I find that a cause for celebration, not a 'cause. You know to be saddened by anything. The I find these to be. Beautiful tops as difficult as it may be the fact that I nation appears to be becoming more enlightened than ever before and ultimately as a result. We're coming together. I find that to be a huge plus not a minus. If the ignorance has to show itself, and if the ignore, it has to showcase themselves in order for this to happen coming out of the dock to me. That's of course was celebration Marcus. Stephen. That's what I alluded to earlier man just come on out. Show us who you are, so we know how to deal with you and everybody. That's four. Right knows how to deal with you. Look listen, this is. There has been. We've been having this conversation for a long time. I mean we had this conversation we had. This conversation went capped kneeled about police brutality. We talked about racing all of them and man you. You look if you look around and social. There were people literally Oh twitter last night. Say A BUBBLE! Did this for attention? What what are you talking about like? It's not. It's not unfathomable that someone could do that. We sold Jesse's me. Make reference to that because people can conjure up things to create narratives to make people overreact. That's why saying earlier. Estimate I'm not doing this emotional. Rollercoaster I'm getting off of it right like I'm nuts and bolts to was going on. There is progress that needs to be made in this country I'm focusing on that progress that needs to be made. That's what bubble wireless is focused in on a by making his statements in Nascar. That's a lot of athletes are focused on a lot of people in society in general of focused on making sure that we draw a line between racist people and people that one good for everybody. That's the bottom line. Look for as much as this is egregious and the things that have transpired for low type. I grew up in the south light. It's not. An uncommon for me to see racist people are know what it looks like or even even be surprised or shocked about certain things that tend to happen. The bottom line is this. I'm often emotional roller coaster like if you racist just be that come out publicly and be that enlist separate that and you be a part of the minority port society that we want to get to, and we think we already are at so all of that being said I'm with Steve Day like in this bringing a lot of people to the light, and the hateful ones are fighting their battle because they see slipping away. Score you're not GonNa hear me say this very very often, but I wanNA give major major kudos to a Lotta. White folks out there in America because if it wasn't for them, protesting and marching with black individuals if it wasn't for them, you know engaging in the kind of of of you know resistance to whatever level of oppression we as black people have been feeling this nation I. Don't think some of these folks will. will be coming out I. mean listen the back. In the day. They used to wear the sheets and used to cover the identity and their faces that we didn't know who the hell they were by virtue of that now. Some black people, a lot of black people will tell you they exist in corporate America. They could be the very people that you're working for the very people that you're talking to I happen to be. Be Blessed we happen to be blessed to not certainly not have that at this company is because we've seen the actions on the part of our executives. And what have you over continuous basis? Elevated level of sensitivity that this place has shown throughout the years deserves to be commended. There's always work to do. There is no perfect place. Make no about it, but I'm incredibly proud to be a part of the Walt Disney and And specifically the ESPN family in that regard having set all of that I'm in the minority, because the reality is vast people, there's a vast number of people of African. American descent in the United States of America that feel subjugated I wouldn't go so far as to say enslaved, but feel subjugated by bosses in corporate America people that say all the right things when the cameras are rolling, but behind the scenes they engage. Eight your and the conduct. Subjugation that they devote their voiceless. They don't have a voice in that regard, green. Marcus knows exactly what I'm talking about. And so because of that because of these times that we're living, what we're seeing is a populous within the United States of America that sees the dramatic shift, and there's so appalled, and and put and taken aback by what they see transpiring that they can't hide their vitriol. They're coming out of the dock because they're being forced out of the dog. We as black people. People have to appreciate the fact that couldn't happen without a vast number of white individuals in our society standing with us and saying you know what we see where the hell you coming from. If we didn't see it before we see it now, and we're with you, so you have that other segment of the population saying wait a minute we lose some of our own here. Some of our own alternative guests and the poor in this noxious. We gotTA speak up and as a result. Of the dock again I find that a cause for celebration doesn't bother me at all. The weird twist in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry

"He is Marty Smith who spent most of the year in Alabama or so it seems but today he is in Columbus Ohio getting ready for the big game up there mardi thanks for. Joining us set the scene for us in Ohio. We know Apollo good evening. Yeah. You're right. I think I had five Alabama games this year. Maybe six I don't know most of them. But I'm up in Columbus right now. It's getting cold outside. It's going to be nasty and rainy tomorrow, and we're in the lobby here at the Woody Hayes athletic center, and they are getting ready, man. It's it's fun to talk to the coaches and the players about this rivalry, you know, growing up in the south as I did. And you know, you've lived there your whole life as well. We look at at the iron bowl, which you guys are at and we all know about Janki Red Sox and all of those great rivalries. But this one's extremely special. It's kind of boring off of respectful hate for one another. They don't hate the man, but they hate the establishment on the other side of the football. And of course, it was all born in a fight over Toledo all those years ago. So when you're fighting over Toledo brother, it makes for a hell of a good rivalry. I was reading about that today coming over here. Toledo for those who don't know is fairly close to the Michigan line. It's also where urban Meyer in Jim Harbaugh were both born same hospital about seven months apart. And and it's pretty amazing Marty how a city in Ohio could be is amazing right in the middle of it. All. Is what blows my mind is what you just said. It's funny. I wrote an essay kind of really chronicling the hatred between the schools and the foundation of the rivalry and the evolution of the rivalry with both sham Boeckler and Woody Hayes in the ten year war and then the two thousand six game the game of the century on and on. And there's so many indelible moments any whether it's Desmond our boy flashing the flesh and the I'm actually staying in the Ohio State lobby right now. Maybe I shouldn't be mentioning those things or Charles Woodson running punts back and all those amazing moments, and I was floored when I learned that urban and horrible we're both from Toledo born into Lido. And then I was even further shocked by the fact that it was the same

Marty Smith's Analysis: Does Alabama's Crimson Tide have any real competition?

"Alabama crimson tide mardi like, ooh. Yeah. Nobody's honest to God. We've been talking about this around here their second team led by Jalen hurts is that is that the best competition that they would have if they played in the national championship game against their second team with Jalen Hurd. No, no Clinton's good, man. Not only is Clinton good. They're really starting to figure it out. Trevor Lawrence is he's a bona fide scholar now at quarterback their defenses elite. They look very complete to me now and only in the last couple of weeks have they look back complete. Notre Dame looked very good. The other night. I was here Yankee Stadium. But at this point, I still believe it's Alabama everybody else from a lot of different perspectives. Their death is unbelievable. To he's going to run away with the Heisman Trophy and their physicality. So I think that I think that Alabama. If they don't show up unprepared, which I don't expect and they don't suffer some sort of catastrophic injury. I think I think they're going to win it in convincingly. But Clinton is good guys.

Rory Mcilroy vs Tiger Woods

"Of that mess and this place you can't even have your phone and what i've noticed is because of that you're more engaged in your fellow man you're more engaged in the event itself you're more engaged in that reverence and tradition and i'm all in we need more of that talking to marty smith marty smith's america the podcast and in this last podcast you talked to both rory mcilroy is gone for the career slam and tiger woods who's making yet another comeback this one seems a lot more for real than as other so in each one let's start with tiger in each one when you talk to people that long normally there's a oh i didn't see that coming moment so let's start with tiger and then the rory what part of the interview for both those guys surprise you the most well we'll start with tiger mike honestly it was when he walked in the door i got up to shake his hand and he gave me a big bro hug and i wasn't expecting that i wasn't expecting that so are found him to be completely disarmed i was expecting i was expecting him to be much more guarded than than he was he was open he was vulnerable he was considerate of what i was asking him and thoughtful in his response and what i found my my greatest takeaway from spending that forty five or fifty minutes with him down a medallist golf club a couple of weeks ago was a newfound joy and a newfound appreciation look i'd never met him until that day so like most people i only witnessed him from afar as a fan of his and there's a there's a boehner ability and a new appreciation for the talent he was given and the hard work he put into be arguably the greatest that's ever done it him and the guy you guys just spoke with mr nncholas so i feel like he's kind of playing with house money and as descriptive as he was about his injury about his back pain he was talking about it being so debilitating he couldn't get out of bed some days and some of those days when he could get out of bed he fell straight to the floor because he couldn't stand up and what mike knows i mean when you're an elite athlete when you're you're playing at.

"Because we get set to watch tiger woods tee off at the masters tiger and phil mickelson and a host of others are going to try and do what rarely gets done and that's win that win a masters when majors after the age of forty and we've got phil tiger henrik stents in jason duff men charley hoffman paul casey all trying to get over that hump we understand that really what's at stake here for golf is tiger because tigers building towards this it's coming off back to back top five finishes and it's all been built on the idea that we wanna to go perform that tournament that matters more than anyone well there's a lot at stake here and there's a lot to talk about and thankfully marty smith was here to help us out now marty smith's america the podcast has new episodes every monday and in this latest episode marty smith gets into tigers legacy putting for memory and how he came to wear red on sundays you can listen on the espn app and apple podcast we've got tiger woods talking with marty smith on the part cat podcast marty smith's america what is the difference between how you struggled and how now okay easiest thing is i no more pain in my lower back that's gone once they got the disc it's fused i am just saw as a rock back there no pain differences i don't have the same range of motion stiffer there and i wake up in the morning much stiffer than it used to takes longer to warm up my angles that i used to hit on the golf course two angles i used to create with my body i can't do that anymore and so i'm learning to do different way i have speed i had the pop but it's done differently and.
