"In the past there have been run off votes so that at least one person was elected. And the last one of those happened in 1967 well. Baseball has doubled in size since then, and it has almost twice there are three times as much history. Uh, so that's why my suggestion is that the baseball writers the top two vote getters, no matter what they get in. Starting now, not retrospectively. We don't need to go back throughout history. But if you make the top two and a modern Hall of Fame class, you belong in the Hall of Fame. At the same time, I would also suggest that the, uh the writers inside the Veterans Committee has to at least select one person. That's how you stop these empty classes. You stop this. Ridiculous exclusion. You stop saying no one's good enough this year, but someone's good enough next year from the exact same pool and you, you know, you get the hall of fame to move forward. You at least have Those three people, which is still less than every other Hall of Fame for those worrying that, Oh, you're going to have a Big Hall of fame. It's still less than all the other Hall of Fame if you have that minimum of three people And you avoid things like what just happened this year, no New Hall of Famers and that just massive glut of people sitting at the border. Got even bigger. All right. I'd like the three step process. The third step, of course. Uh, the two person minimum, no matter what the vote is the top to get in, and there's some other things that you've talked about. So those are the three steps I like it. The Buck O'Neil award, which is very important. It was sort of done. I think haphazardly to name it after him when they didn't get into the Hall of Fame. Uh, but the Negro League Committee but the Buck O'Neil award Uh, you have a thought about that one, too. Yeah, list this three steps, uh, on their own, because that's kind of the main planned. I You know, I didn't want to make it too big. But then I had a few other suggestions, and one of them was to make the Buck O'Neil Award, an annual event make that an annual celebration of the game. And to release the winner's name Right before you will renounce the baseball writers and now winners that way you can associate it. You can make a big deal about it, because let's be honest. There have been five members or five people. Elected to the buckle Neil Given the Buck O'Neil award. You can't ask the average fan to name those five and expect to get maybe one or two and the only reason they would get one is because buckle Neil's name is in the award. You know, it's just not an award that baseball highlights. You know, your average fan doesn't know about. So I think when your team is as good as the Giants are right now, you don't spend as much time thinking about the draft. The one that they'll get on Wednesday from Alex would They're so important right now. Because we are less than a month away from the trade deadline. I have this battle with Marty Lourie on all of our weekend shows on talking baseball. I'm of the belief Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris cannot waste the magical first half of the Giants of Hat. "On the sports leader. All right. Welcome back to talking baseball alongside Bill Lasky and Marty Lourie. My name is Carrie Crowley. It's a pleasure to welcome in our next guest, the Giants director of amateur scouting, He's in charge of the predraft process and the draft as well. Which is coming up in a few weeks here in July. Michael Holmes, Michael thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us today. Yeah. Thanks, Carrie for having me. So the draft moves from June to July this year. Obviously, you guys can be on the road. So many different things compared to the 2020 draft. What is this whole predraft process been like for you and the amateur scouting department. You know, it's definitely been something new to us with. Obviously, the date being pushed back, just kind of the mechanics of how things play out the schedule the calendar. Um it's actually given us an opportunity to to see more of some players, uh, which is probably a good thing for us, considering some of our summer. Coverages that were used to were altered due to the pandemic last year, so it's just been a little bit of a different um of way. It's played out from a timeline timeline standpoint, but it's been great. Our scouts have done a great job of getting out and seeing seeing these players, the high school players, the junior college, the college guys were busy preparing for the draft and other than that, it's really pretty much business as usual. The way we prepare for the draft, and as we get closer, it's just works. Fighting for our guys because that's what we work all year for. It's a really interesting process to me and specifically the mechanics of going about seeing players talking about your draft picks with different scouts. How many players do you like to see how how many places do you travel to in this predraft process? Uh, you know, we travel pretty much everywhere. Um, uh, myself. Uh, you know, I worked for so long as a National Cross checker, and I probably saw more players than I do now is the director Because I'm trying to get back and see players multiple times. It just you know, at this juncture of the year trying to get multiple looks and but it's listen. It's a group effort. We've got guys from the area Scout level all the way to the national level that are boots on the ground guys out there, working hard scouring the country looking for the best next San Francisco giant player and our guys doing extremely good job of the way they go about it, and I just feel fortunate to be with such a great groups such a great organization, and, um, these guys have one goal in mind. And that's justified. Major League baseball players that can play an oracle part Well, no one travels more than scouts and specifically. Amateur scout scouring the country for hidden gems and guys who can make a difference in an organization. How many guys do you have on the road at a time? And how frequent is the communication? Are you in touch with your scouts every single day? Or is it something where you know you check in every few days? Well, our our scouts that are at the supervisor level the regional supervisor level they're constantly daily talking. With the area scouts that they supervise. I'm in constant contact with our national guys are regional guys. Uh, I do my best to touch base with our areas, scalps as much as possible. Especially if I'm in their area. I'm with them or talking with them. So listen, I'm a big believer communication. I think it kind of helps the process develop and go better. So I'm always on our guys is communicating. We stay in touch. We let each other know where we're at kind of what we're seeing. And it kind of really helps to process go well talking with Giants Amateur scouting director Michael Holmes here on talking baseball and Michael, you've had a long relationship with Farhan Zaidi dating back to your time in the A's organization, and now you've worked with Scott Harris for the second consecutive year. Just how beneficial is it to have that kind of relationship with Farhaan when you're going through this process, and when you're picking players who are going to be the future of the organization to have that trust and loyalty and longstanding communication? I think it's really important. I mean, to be honest with you use the word trust. And I think I think that is is what kind of makes our relationship unique. I trust him so much, and I believe he trust me. So, um, are constant communication Come draft, an amateur scouting related is always kind of built off that trust so my relationship with him goes way back. Obviously, Um, uh, I think Giants fans are understanding kind of how good he is at what he does and something I've known for a really long time. Obviously. Bringing Scott over has been a huge asset to our organization as well in getting to learn to kind of work with him, Uh, and kind of learn each other through his first, you know, year so here, but it's It's one of those things that We have a trust within each other. We understand kind of each other a little bit. That kind of helps our communication. Our conversations are discussions go a lot better and it's been really good. So far. I think the casual sports fan can look at the draft process in the NFL in the N B, A and has a little bit better insight and a window into the sport because they're big TV events. Whereas baseball the draft is kind of gaining in popularity, but it's not quite there yet. What is the room look like on draft day?.

"And I don't mean to belittle it when I say only in Mexico, but he had a terrific Korea down there. Well, you came up with the Cleveland Indians Tell me about getting to the big leagues for you. When did it all happened? Maybe a first game in the big leagues Get into the big leagues was extremely difficult. In my day. You couldn't start in double that You had to start in Class D now because Of the segregation problems and we had our class D team was in Tifton, Georgia. I couldn't go there, so they sent me to Fargo, North Dakota, where I won rookie of the year and I won 21 Ball games became the first half for American to win 20 games in the minor league system. Then I went from Claire. See the Class B, Where won 19 games almost didn't lose a game And then I went to reading Pennsylvania. Classy. We are learned a great lesson because Was 11 in one and I was getting a little bit older, a little bit more confident, and I thought I knew more about baseball than anybody else. I was upset that it didn't take me immediately to the major leagues after I got to be 11 and one slough it off a little bit. Didn't stay in shape, got in an argument with the manager and ended up to season the second half, winning only two ballgames. So it was a great lesson for me to learn at that time that you must not lose focus, despite the fact that you are disappointed in something well, I went to winter ball and straighten everything out and I got a chance to go to San Diego in the Pacific Coast League on 1 18 there and then they brought me up to the major leagues. After that, Tell me about getting up to the big leagues and what that was like. Carbon fell was there, But then they fired. Kirby fell, And then they hired Joe Garden and then Joe Gordon was traded as a manager for Jimmy Dykes, but it was difficult to get to the major leagues. You just couldn't the Cleveland Indians had a terrific ball club. They had a terrific pitching staff early win Bob Lemon Herbie School on How them On Right now Alaska. They sent many pictures back to the minor leagues, but I was lucky that I came at that particular time when their careers was winding down. So I broke that pitching staff and I won my first game. But you know, when you are rookie in the major leagues, everything is huge. Everything was exciting. The road trips was exciting, but Larry Doby was on the ball club when I got there, they say you're rooming with Larry Doby. So I went in the room. Larry came in the room. He says. Oh, you're much cat Grant. I said Yes, sir. Mr Dobie, He said wish bad you want I said Yes. So, Mr Dobie, he said we're going to have to get rid of that. Yes. So, Mr Don't say yes, sir. Mr Dover, Julius Swamp Fire. Grant never made it to the big leagues but pitched effectively in the minors from 1956 through 1969. Swamp Fire had his two best seasons with Monterey in the Mexican League in 1966 and seven winning 38 games while losing only 19 over the two seasons. Mudcat and swamp fire.
