"Four with Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman, Paul O'Neill. He was Lou. Pinellas whipping boy. I think Lou felt like he should hit for more power. Paul had a difference of opinion. Paul, of course, ultimately was. He was a fine player here, Uh, and he was a guy ultimately traded to the New York Yankees. And became, I would venture to say with a large degree of certainty, one of the 20 most popular Yankee players of all time. George Steinbrenner loved him. He referred to him as a warrior. The numbers he posted in New York were unbelievable. And I think a lot of people and to some extent myself included felt when he went from Quiet state old Cincinnati to the media center of the world that he was going to have a hard time he took. He took New York by storm. He did it like falling out of bed and God bless you for doing it. All right. We've hit the halfway point. Here is Player number five with Marty. It's great for me. All right, let's see. Oh, boy. Do you see the name? I did. Oh, boy. Say I would say this whole hatch full of that name. Homer Bailey. The only slip of paper that says Homer Bailey. I promise. Homer and I had our problems. Um I don't know to this day. Exactly What Problem he had with me. Other than, obviously, at times I was critical, but it certainly didn't apply to just Homer Bailey Homer Bailey had such a firm dislike for me that when he pitched a no hitter at Great American Ballpark, Gets to San Francisco giants. He refused to come on the air with me, and it wasn't really with me. I guess I might have been involved. But I think segue was it wanted to ask him to come on, and he said no way, but he went on television. He wouldn't come on with me. You know, I don't know what to say. He he and I, uh I would go out of my way to speak to him because I knew that he didn't wanna have anything to do with me. So I'd go out of my way to speak to him. But we never carried on a conversation. And I would like to think that before I pass on to maybe a better world. I'll have some precise idea of what it was that he's so dislike me over. 41 names left in the hat. I promise. Homer Bailey does not appear. They're all different every year had a different player. All right, here's player number six with Marty. Really good. This stuff here, man. Billy Hamilton. One of the nicest young man I've ever been associated with and legitimately. So he was blessed with a God given talent to run like very few people who have ever played this game could, But I also felt that he was a guy who never fully embraced. The thing that he needed to embrace to become an outstanding player. He was just good at defensive center fielders. Maybe the best I've ever seen that put on a red uniform. I'd give it the edge to him overseas are Geronimo, who was a great one with a big red machine. Um, you know, Billy has bounced around so much since leaving here. Uh And I think it really has something to do with his inability to make contact. He never embraced the correct technique for budding. He was just a guy who God gave an incredible talent, too. And I don't think he took advantage of it Nearly like he should have. It's like Willie Mays Hayes in Major league. You need to do push ups every time he popped up. Exactly. That's good. I like that. All right. Here comes Player number seven with Marty Brennaman. This name is Oh, Willie Mo Pena. I just had as much raw power is anybody I've ever seen, Um, he had a problem making contact and he, uh, I'll never forget tonight. I made the comment on the air that, uh, somebody hit a fly ball to I guess he was playing left field and he messed it up about as bad as he could, and He came charging in. And and I made the comment that the approach that ball like it was a spitting cobra. And uh huh, But then he chart around, he went to Japan. And he had incredible years over in Japan in terms of home run power is unfortunate that he could not make better contact because had he been able to it would have been almost scary to see how many home runs he might have hit. Willie, Mo Pena and Mark Maguire. The two players I remember that every player on both teams would make sure they watched batting practice for actually eggs. I couldn't agree with you more. And he was also the guy that I would sit up there and just simply shake my head and say, Willie, Mo will be more willing mode. All right, Here comes Player number eight. With Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman. Let's see what we got here, Ray Knight. One of my dear friends in the game. I don't talk to him very much anymore, but I I enjoyed him being on this ball club. Uh, you know when Pete left and and and they put Ray at third base. I thought this is not going to work and I think he ended that 1979 season batting 3 17 for John McNamara. Uh, tough guy is ever strapped on a uniform in any sport. If you want to pick up and have a full scale brawl, Give me first pick and I take great night he was was a gold gloves. Boxer growing up. Um I used to play golf with him and Nancy Lopez when they were married..

S. C. Austin Jackson says last year's first writer Jonah Williams will be back after missing his rookie season but that won't entirely fix the Bengals offense of line Jackson today it'll speed off the edge which will help borough settle in with his new office if you are wondering he had a linebacker going at twenty one twenty four before the Bengals and then at thirty seven after the Bengals second round pick if you're thinking wide receiver he has a wide receiver going at number eleven twelve thirteen twenty twenty two and thirty two he's got six wide receivers going in the first round the Bengals pick at thirty three then he has another wide receiver going at thirty four and another wide receiver going at thirty six so again he goes often to tackle with the second round pick at number thirty three Austin Jackson out of USC big Duke young duty he's only twenty turned twenty one in may highs in early entrant entrant into the NFL draft six five three twenty two left tackle described by scouts is rolling gifted a true left tackle treats a loaded with athletic ability and talent but still raw does have nimble feet a dancing bear is Dave Lapham would say and needs to have that athletic ability developed and harvested Austin Jackson remember the name I was struck by something I saw on Ifill network today Ian Rapoport talking about Joe burrow in talking about the meeting that Joe burrow had with the Bengals involving Mike brown well here's an interesting note in here about the all important Joe burrow meeting with the bangles at the combine Mike brown the owner who is still very much involved in day to day operations really still runs the show in Cincinnati I am told that brown was in fact in the meeting.

"And sports barley corn get over here. take a little while. at the door. going to continue and I want to thank god Darlene to middle door. very nice cars thank you so much for the hours of enjoyment you given my husband Charlie who losses like about seven years ago listens to you every day enjoy your show so much Darling middle door thank you and thank you for listening I met hundreds Reds fans yesterday to celebrate the life and times of other hall of Famer none of us are indispensable most of us are important all of us are indispensable in the eyes of our family and our loved ones but do have feelings toward men or women you've never met just listen doing get snippets of their life and when I go into the holy grail of the great American so many people on a picture taken I don't take it for granted I try not to big time ever anyone like us some might do but I like the fact then joy greatly the fact that I can motivate and help one of the best things that happens when I do those kinds of events is that soldiers come up to me and say that they now so much love the I heart media app because what they do is download the podcast and they get a snippet of what's happening in Cincinnati when they're in Iraq Afghanistan and a soldier came up to me in Europe and that's what they do and they download the app and they get the podcast and they're able to stay in touch with all the political social athletic cultural events happening in Cincinnati feel connected and the good old days that one possible once you get outside the reach of the transmitter which which might might only be about five hundred to a thousand miles you kind of lose track because of technology today the I heart media app basically can listen to any radio station in America and the fact that I can be and fort Myers Florida I be in Naples and I can listen crystal clear the seven hundred WLW is a wonderful thing man the best thing is when soldiers download my show and then share with other tristate soldier serving in harm's way overseas and they come up to me there's not enough I can do for those men and women that do those kinds of things and Marty is the same way he's wonderful around most individuals that what ninety nine percent wish him well and and Mike. case because I can be a divisive character I get about ninety percent positive in ten percent negative and Marty's cases probably ninety nine point nine percent positive and point zero one percent negative because that that the speech I tend to make on opening day involves the fact that were separated many times by race by gender by religion by political beliefs by orientations of one type or another the Reds baseball should be uniting thing that brings us all together sports in general should say let's play politics at the front door we may feel strongly about certain issues but none the less when we come together as a people there's a occasion when sports should be unit uniting factor unifying of all of us under one banner the things that make us common are much more than things that separates and so Reds baseball has been that for at least for the last forty six years and having the chronicler of that kind of event having someone a clear voice who is who is charismatic and funny and informative one individual said to me should I get into radio I say absolutely not it's too difficult for for those who do I said listen to Marty Brennaman. because he's concise he paints a picture tells a story he's fun to listen to it's entertaining when you meet him out in public he's got a big smile on his face he's approachable he's easy. and I think in an opinion written by Brian tome my friends from my friend from crossroads that popped up in the Enquirer couple hours ago Candace says it all and Brian tome who with every other Monday normally we talk about better about the issues you con understands how life works on I can't imagine the wonderful life that he's led coming here from Pittsburgh about twenty three years ago with really no one part of this church wanting to form and preach the gospel and he had nothing and no buildings had no flock only had was the Bible the word of god twenty three years later Brian tome crossroads and mango and others they have something like eighty thousand I said eighty thousand prisoners and followers because this was a character that arose and it's changed measurably the lives of so many in positive ways you cannot be an alcoholic or a drug addict or a philanderer or a Mistura of good deeds and still be a faithful follower of cross roads or a faithful Catholic or faithful Jew or a Muslim whatever it is the six I have great respect for the six whatever religion it is we worship the same god column by different names yeah Brian tone come here and do what he has done is remarkable it's unbelievable. any pan this so. opinion about Marty Brennaman he begins by saying I've never met the man nor have I heard him do its job for more than one inning. listening to a slow paced baseball game on the radio is in my thing yet I'm simultaneously invigorated by his life and said by his departure men and women who put their head down and go about their jobs every day. day after day week after week month after month year after year decade after decade are a dying breed a major league play by play job sounds glamorous many would think a pastor of a mega church sounds glamorous as well I promise you your job also sounds glamorous to someone else working in some other industry no matter what our day jobs are we fight the fight a monotony everyday is on it related vignette involving Ken Griffey junior in this says a lot about both of their character he says in February of twenty of the year two thousand you and I remember Carl lender junior. who was the founder of so many great businesses. Reds fans are celebrating is the most promising talent in the entire league was coming back home to Cincinnati a son of a former Reds great was coming home to usher in a new era of the big red machine Ken Griffey junior flew in a car lenders private plane to save the day unfortunately ended up not being Prince Charming you might remember after the nineteen ninety nineteen came within one game of going to the playoffs because of al Leiter a name that will live in infamy it was thought then three or four months later in February of two thousand one Carl and pulled out a Logan airport with the Willie Mays in the twenty first century greatness would fall upon the Reds some gave speeches here about the coming the second coming of Joe Morgan to Cincinnati and that would be the big red machine for the next ten years match diamond remembers that twenty years ago. it was not okay this was the Joe Morgan trade and so now the twenty first century. for the next nine or ten years we're gonna have graffiti and Larkin and done and it's gonna be great. well guess what. it didn't work out that way in fact my camera in the center fielder we sent to Seattle for junior plus other compensation had better stats in Seattle was a center fielder the gravy had in Cincinnati and there was only I think one winning season they can refer you had in Cincinnati the entire next eight or nine years I said one winning season it was terrible. and and this vignette pointed out by Brian tome in the editorial today says the following just a few short months later Brennaman called out Griffey junior all in the air for not running hard enough to stretch a single into a double refer you did not appreciated and told Brennaman afterwards in the locker room Marty had built a career on running hard every day using his mind his mouth behind the Mike he understood a half baked effort when he saw he said quote the next time you don't run hard to first base I'm gonna pointed out again on quote this does sound like Marty absolutely that's Marty and not Brian Thomas Hann to say is great for you walked away refusing to engage further Marty told him quote. I was here before you got here and I'm gonna be here long after you're gone unquote. and by the way he's dropped the same thing on me and I was only half right but none the less as I continue. Brian tome says Marty was right on both counts he was there twenty six years before Griffey an hour eleven years after Grevy's departure Brennaman is still at work hitting the same nail with the diligence and excellence every day forty six years on the same job doing the same thing in serving the same community in remarkable ways taking this in my comments ordinary lives lead in extraordinary ways. Brian terms as my dad worked as long for what Westinghouse as a nuclear engineer could and our modern economy though longstanding jobs with honorable employers are rare even more rare people of character who will stand there posted do their job the game itself. was a little different in nineteen seventy four then it was in twenty nineteen ninety three sixty feet six inches it's the same game. and so doing the same job for seven thousand gains and I guess about sixty three thousand innings can be a bit monotonous one is the same game but what makes the difference is this every day has a story line different players different circumstances hustling or not when Marty said about a month ago the Reds are simply calling it in memory said that but this ball club. that's struck to the heart of the success and the greatness of Marty Brennaman because he could say that I don't think any other Reds broadcaster could get away with. and so when I hear this song Frank Sinatra my way he did it I did it my way that's Marty Brennaman and that's why he was respected and loved by Reds baseball fans your respect a good Reds baseball broadcaster what you love a person and when you made Marty off the air and walking or he is as much fun more fun off the air then on the year he can be truly himself so when Marty said yesterday I knew in the summer he related a call that he had on Tony Perez headed home run. and at that point he felt like Joe Nuxhall welcomed him Joe Nuxhall born here raised here lived here died here in Camden body Nuxhall continue his tradition of continuing to reach out from Joe Nuxhall as grave to help boys and girls with special needs. it's a wonderful thing and Marty Brennaman. I was welcomed by Joe Nuxhall. and therefore because of who he was in his characters it's a fun loving guy so professional he was accepted here in Cincinnati it is difficult it is hard. and Marty succeeded and I'm so happy for him that he met Amanda seven or eight years ago and they have a great relationship and now he's going to spend the next hopefully ten to fifteen years in good health with plenty of love and financial resources to do whatever he wants to do and that is the glory of the hall of fame telling it like it is and you would want to know you would not want to broadcast in to tell you that after five or six seasons of losing on average more than ninety games a year that everything's okay it's going to be fine don't worry about it they're hustling like crazy no they're not yeah I haven't spoken to him because I don't know but I would imagine the ownership of the Reds are angry at the fact that the modern baseball player does not play with the same gods in guy I'll and determination for victory as we would like as you and I know I work in Marty brought this point up that those who say will come into ten or fifteen or twenty games you can't do his job you couldn't do my job or your job showing up every now and then Marty got down there about three or four in the afternoon sometimes earlier and you get snippets of information just walking around that you're like during the game. and sitting behind his microphone. you have to feel as if you're the advocate for the listener Marty Brennaman represented Reds baseball fans which almost got him fired several times. and so that was the success of the man and if you want to read a great column check out the Enquirer website ominous Rachel hook it up to mine to listen to the words of Brian tome and why a man who came from Pittsburgh and found in one of the great churches in the tri state accepting many fallen away Catholics discussed the by many things and the Catholic Church which bother why I will never ever quit being a Catholic because of the sins and crimes committed by others I will do that but I understand all others do they fall away but Brian tome is let the flame. of religion in the hearts and souls of eighty thousand greater Cincinnati ins that otherwise that would not happen the flame burns and Brian tome the flame is out for Marty but he's asked us to give. a second third and fourth changed the Tommy throw in which I will do. and I think Jeff Brantley is wonderful I'm not going to assume that Tommy thrall content somehow take the place of Marty Brenham he may do the same job but tell me in five or ten years. FOR the Reds when several World Series..

"Marty Brennaman Danny grades you boys called it what are your thoughts on this big Reds win today thank you very much Tommy well I guess we saw the reversal of trends so to speak last night it was a red who rallied late to tie it up only to lose a game Daddy and today it was a red who had the lead all day long before the Braves came back to tie it up within the Reds come out on top of the three run home run by Tucker Barnhart yeah huge huge hit from talker and and and what kept that any going is the rookie error Stevie's Aquino he had a great at bat to out hit with got a single demi glace is got a single to give Tucker that chance but yeah I was a definitely a great performance from Sonny gray spoiled by the bull pen a little bit but I mean what can you say about how good Sonny was today well I think from my money is one of the top five pitching performances I've seen this season by a red started for him to pitch the way he did for seven innings when you look back on those innings it he gave up a first inning leadoff double a **** your junior got out of that gave up a leadoff double to Austin rally in the fourth inning no problem the first two batters reach in the sixth inning they hung with them and they were rewarded with him pitching out of still another jam but for the most part he seemed to be in control pretty much all day making all of his pitches and of course he has great mound presence every time he goes out there you know what it's it's amazing watching him as much as I've got to see him this year he just continues to get better better when guys are on base when he's in those pressure situations and what he did feeling his position made a great play what he did with the bat he did everything today he did everything except get a win but the red get to go home with the big W. here again in Atlanta yeah so they get displayed here and now they go back home to take on the angels they got Louise Casteel on the mound tomorrow night against a young man of course fifty for the first time in the big leagues and Patrick sand of all and should be an interesting to game get together without American League west ball club yeah it is the game Louise Casteel get the pitch to Mike trout and Albert Pujols well you don't want to miss that there's a chance to get their person you better get their person well the rest will have a happy playing heading on back to Cincinnati it look very very dim in that night Dinning and of course they came out of it we greatly especially with Robert Stevenson striking out Adam duvall with runners at second and third the winning run a third and then getting tensioner Brian began to balance out and then the whole run by Tucker born hard to win it tomorrow night back against the angels in the opener of two six four Redlegs intent Tommy back to you all right thanks a lot Marty hand that Reds game recap was brought to you by first financial bank we go beyond banking by putting you first first financial bank member FDIC we have a check and scores from around Major League Baseball with the read post.

"His voice. You don't miss anything. And I just wanna say thank you for the privilege to say that mardi. You're the best thing. I really am thankful for being able to you know, like share the broadcast so to speak as a listener Jean. Thank you. For your words, mardi takes them to heart. We're going to go back to the great American ballpark and Marty Brennaman and the next minute or two is going to face the media of five nine twelve nineteen seven hundred wwl w and also the Enquirer and others to talk about this. And we think it's appropriate to to lead others interview. Marty Brennaman to see exactly what his thoughts on his retirement. So let's continue with Marty from the great American ballpark. Like to welcome you to great American ballpark. I know that all of you that are here heard the announcement that was made earlier today, and with that it is my pleasure to introduce the hall of Famer the voice of the reds. Mr Marty Brennaman. Thank you very much. Joe? I'm glad I could talk George Voelkel and George said he woke up didn't have anything to do all day. There was no story breaking. But I did I did think you guys this morning because I know it came out of the blue, and I hate you gotta drag yourself down here in this kind of weather to do something with me because you get tired enough here with the crap I have to deal out from February through September. Whatever the case might be anybody got any questions. I'd be happy to answer them. Yeah. Georgia. Marty. When did you come to this decision, and how much I was talking to Jeff Brantley how much did your conversations with VIN Scully have to do with you thinking? This was the right time. Well, I don't think that this conversation I had with then what is three years ago. Whatever it was. But I I it's the type of thing that. I think it subconsciously begins in your mind that one day, you know, you're you're part of your career is behind you. And and I was really interested in hearing what he had to say about you know, what what his plans were. And and I mean, I I was stunned when he he made the decision they did because I truly think that. He was the best. I mean, any any guy in my profession that will not concede VIN. Scully was the greatest baseball broadcasts. You who ever lived one is delusional or two he has such an ego that he can't admit that somebody's better than he is. And so I was interested in what he had to say. And he's been gracious with me, I nobody has a greater level of respect. And that I do about what he was able to accomplish in his career. So I was interested in what he had to say. And he was concerned. As I said earlier today, you can talk to people until you're blue in the face about retiring guys that have done that. But you have to walk that walk whatever, they tell you. They can't that's not advice because I'm a B is different from you is night is today. It you. I may decide after three months I made the biggest mistake in my life. There are other people will walk away. I always think about Johnny bench. He got tired of getting beat every day because I was a bad club. He was associated with after being a part of one of the great teams in history of baseball. And he woke up one day. I really believe in God. So I'm tired of losing all the time. He walked away and never missed a beat. I mean, he never looked back. And that's that's exactly the way. I would hope that my decision. Will be for me. Marty you talked about you've always had a special connection with the fans. When did you realize how special that connection was and how much of that carry you throughout the years? I'll tell you what the first year I was here in I replaced a guy who will go now is one of the top ten sports announcers of all time and L Michaels. And I. It was incredible to me because there were very few public criticisms of my work early. I was shocked, but I was with a good team. I was broadcasting a good team in seventy four unlike L came in and seventy one and the team didn't play. Well, and I think the fans took their frustrations out on him. This is what I was told. Well, the season rolls along and. The play tonight double they played a twilight double header against the San Francisco Giants at riverfront. The weekend after the all star break. And in the first game red went to the bottom of the knights trailing thirteen to nine and they rallied in the bottom of the night. And with two out. Peres? I forget who was on first base but bench hit a ground ball to. First baseman, Dave Kingman, and it was a routine ground ball owes a debt out, and he it and Randy Moffett was pitching for the giants. And he never left them out. And so that extended the night and the ridge were two runs down and Tony Perez three run home run to straight away centerfield to win the game fourteen to thirteen in lost my mind, and I was told later that people were calling and asking to hear the replay the game winning home run all night long on our flagship station, wwl w radio. And I think at that point. I I realized that that you know, what maybe maybe they liked my work.

"Yes. Indeed. We are. We're not just here. He's damn thin. Also known as Ralph read Ricky flick, whatever you call. Pretty much anything. But we're here every Thursday night for a we like to call the reality check. And we try to cover off, you know, maybe a little different angle what you've been hearing about all week long. But I gotta be honest with you, Fred nothing nothing has captured the imagination, and perhaps the hearts of the Tri state and the entire baseball world like the big story yesterday, which is carried over to the big story today. Absolutely. And that is the hall of Famer that's one thing that we're not Morty Brennaman announcing that this the twenty nineteen red season will be his last year number forty six think about that. Thirty percent of all the games that the reds have played in their history not on radio, but he's called thirty percent of those. And it's our pleasure to welcome in somebody who knows a little about Marty Brennaman sawn and broadcaster extraordinary one Thom Brennaman, Tom how we doing tonight. How you doing? Hey, boss. It's been awhile since we've run into each other at the UDF, but I gotta tell you. Yup. Yup. Yesterday. Social media, basically crashed with the with the news and the announcement by your dad that he was going to make this his final season, everybody, just shedding a tear collectively. I gotta figure you have a smile ear to ear because you know, your dad gets to now go do all of these other things that he has certainly earned the right to do. It's funny. You say that because I was one of the people I think probably in his life. And I don't know how many there are. But I was trying to talk him out of it. And. Yeah. I think it, you know. A lot of people like you're talking about. They know Marty Brennaman is being Marty Brennaman. I, you know, I'm no different than you. Or anybody else in the world? Sign of somebody in you know. Have a father in law who has done a lot of research on retirees thought about it for years and years out in Arizona, and he's son all these kind of these research in about people who retire, and you know, how long do they live after they retire? All the tortoise scuffed, it I would never thought about and just because my father in law had done it. I kind of rolled that into my dad's thinking when he first kind of brought it up with three years ago. We were in Milwaukee. I'll never forget as long as I live and. I talked to him about it then and then a year later in Pittsburgh. And then this year, we're in Milwaukee again, and I could tell that. He really meant it this time and even as recently as a month ago. Are you? Sure, this is what really what you wanna do. You wanna go maybe to thirty games forty games kind of staying in you know, a little bit. And he just like I'm done. And he was you know, he's never been a guy who's a big traveler and he went overseas and he talked about a little bit yesterday. He went to France and Italy for the first time and when he came back off that trip. He didn't really want to go on the trip. He wasn't interested in France. Or Italy never has been and when he got back. He's like I'm done. Yeah. I was going to say when you when he said to you. I mean it this time. What do you think it was because I he mentioned yesterday about how you know. He he really miss it because he loves going to spring training. Yup. Yup. Do you think could it be like the old the boxing world? You know, I'm done. And then he goes, maybe not are you really think this is it. I I I really don't know what the end of the day what kind of put him over the top. But he just. You know, the game world the whole kind of thing has changed so much in recent years, and I kind of feel like thank God is great health. I was talking with a friend of mine the other day Marchenko who's an attorney in town. And he's represented my dad for years and years and years on his contract after Ruben, Kathy retired. And you know, Mark Yankee, you know, what I think you're looking at this totally the wrong way. You gotta be happy for your dad, and this is forty eight hours ago. And I'm like, you know, what you're probably right and he shared with me a story about his father about how you got sick at fifty eight asks you were three years. We're really weren't very good. He's like your dads in great health. He happy in marriage. She's happy in his life. Let him go. Enjoy it. Kind of rang true to me that you know, what he's exactly right going joy it, and that's a great point. And Thom Brennaman kind enough to join us with a different perspective. I think you've heard everybody with their big outpourings of other thoughts and memories of Marty Brennaman is the is the voice of the ranch for so long. You know, as you talking about that, Tom I think back to my dad's retirement, and he was ready to go. Do what was next, but his thing was golf, and I understand that traveling probably was similar for your dad as was golf never wanted to do it. Did it then got hooked on it? And so okay, lots of things to do. My dad didn't really ever get to travel. So what ended up happening is he retired played a bunch of golf gave my mom crazy. Get him out of the house enough. But I would tell you this about fifteen years into his retirement he got called back into where he used to work to do some consulting. And I think he found that as or more, I think rejuvenating and exciting and he turned his brain clicked back into gear. And I wonder at some point down the line. Does does your dad does he find that thing within the organization or do you think he's just like you said finish completely with the game? I really don't see how that's going to be possible for him. Yeah. You know, it's great points. Great question. I don't know the answer to that. And you know, I I I started having this conversation three years ago as I talked about a second ago when we were in Milwaukee one day, you know, I mean, I sat down with them we rarely ever have breakfast together on the road or go out a Cup of coffee.

"Indeed, eighty five sixteen and Brian combs is in here. The big news. The big big news yesterday. The pending retirement of Marty Brennaman one more year. One more season will be this year from opening day March twenty eighth to a close of the season. Marty Brennaman will be doing his last stand has reds play by play man. The question has become who replaces Martin not that he could ever be replaced. But at least who will be in the booth with the primary job of describing reds baseball for the twenty twenty season. A couple of people said they won't be doing it. Thom Brennaman has made it clear that he doesn't wanna leave. Fox Sports is not interested in the radio job. Jim day said last night seven hundred wwl W that he doesn't see himself as a radio play by play man, though, he enjoyed a couple of games he filled in last year. And may do a few this year. I'm not sure, but he wants to stay on the TV side. So I guess that opens it up to the similar competition when Marty replaced Al Michaels some forty six years ago. We'll see the us the play by play guy who wasn't Pensacola to do some work this year as like the third man in the booth with with a cowboy who was definitely staying on. Reg did say that Jeff Brantley will be here for a few more years at least he's under contract. And I know Bob gasoline said he was pleased that there will be some continuity. It won't be a complete change. What's Marty's gone? Yeah. Big news. And I guess a big made sense to do it for the the affiliation. Yeah. I think you really lunging and felt good about that. Said you'll never know till the end of the year and explained yesterday that the castellinis talked him out of it said it wasn't fair to reds baseball fans. And that. Not let them know as well. So Marty agreed. Okay. Coming up at five thirty. We're still waiting for that snow and freezing rain to hit the tri-state this morning. It's back in Indiana headed this way. Doesn't look like it's going to be too much of an issue. This morning. Five thirty on NewsRadio seven about five eighteen right now five eighteen recall tad Commons. He was the teacher who took off with a fifteen year old and they traveled across the country, and they were somewhat in love. And even after the fact, maybe a year after the fact, I mean, she was claiming that she was fine with the guy, you know. But of course, it's kind of illegal. So anyway, she was fifteen they took off in two thousand seventeen they were gone for about a month was sentenced finally came down twenty years. You had a good time twenty years in prison. The federal crab of crossing state lines to have sex with a minor and obstruction of Justice it s for the minimum sentence of ten years arguing if they had not cross state lines. He only would've faced two to four which is kinda stupid. When you think about it? Prosecutors however called for the thirty year sentence claiming Cummins took advantage of a vulnerable girl who had been neglected and abused Cummins already have been suspended from his teaching job back in February when another students students all him kissing the victim. A month later, he and she disappeared. The teams father reported her missing Cummins was fired soon after his teaching license was revoked he's got nothin'. They were found in a cabin in a remote part of California in April twenty seventeen. And she said she was so hungry that she resorted to eating flowers while in captivity. So not a good provider. Have five nineteen right now. We'll get to Jay Ratliff and a couple of we will check our sports. We'll check traffic. There is a headache. He called me the peanut gallery. You know, we all pick our spots. Go ahead. Let's face it. Let's face. It. You make a lit. You know, Willie always talks about making bowel Rushmore and all this stuff and radio and everything else. Well, you take you take lose mount Rushmore. And I think Marty's, you know, any list you put on, you know, a mount Rushmore cincinnatian thank Marty's on it. You know, Marty Brennaman in Cincinnati. His voice is recognized by everybody. You know, he he's doesn't like the guy. So. I mean, I make enemies, you know, Marty Brennaman makes it even the people he take shots at because of the odyssey and candor. I I think they he gets away with that. So I mean, okay, real quickly in this first segment bulldog on the mount Rushmore of Cincinnati broadcast grades. We all we both agree that Marty Brennaman should be on that mountain. Would you choose the poofy hair fancy boy Marty Brennaman or the the closely shorn haired Marty Brennaman I like the closely short mardi, obviously being follicly-challenged myself. I I I like that. All right bulldog. We'll take a break and come back more with the bulldog barks before midnight on the nightcap on seven hundred wwl w..

"Years of all these great spring and summer nights that have been filled with voice of Marty Brennaman. I would suggest to you and tell me if you believe that I'm right? I I know I am, but I just wanted confirmation from you. Isn't it? The best thing in the world. And I've always thought this in my career in radio and broadcasting to go out when you want to go out, and and being able to pick and choose your moment. Marty Brennaman did that today with Bill Cunningham earlier, and obviously it's been the buzz all day long. But don't you agree with me? Isn't that a true measure of how great you really are? Because you get to choose when you exit the stage not anybody else. Absolutely. I mean, you know, let's face it. Marty Brennaman tonight. Kearns cincinnati. And he's somebody that people like you, and I have spent our entire time in Cincinnati listening to. I mean, I remember now Michaels was the announcer. And then Marty Brennaman came at a perfect time for the reds winning ways. But I listened to Willie today, and I listened to the news interview. But it is awesome. It he gets to go out. And you know, I think it's a fair statement. It's been scali one and Marty Brennaman number two. I mean, let's face it. The reds have been not very great lately. And you know, but but yet Cincinnati stays a baseball town read through every year with opening day and everything else that you know, Iran's are bigger in this town in the Bengals and always will. But I you know, it's been it's been some rough sledding here lately. But at the same time, I'm probably somebody like most everyone else, I would still tune into rows driving in the game was on still tune in just to see what Marty was talking to Jeff rally about you know, what he had to say. And he did his best to make it entertaining. I don't know if this was discussed today, but I do wonder. Yep. The bad years that we've had three in a row have changed anything. I heard you make a comment about Johnny bench one day. Decided man I'm tired of losing day. He did make the comment. I don't know if it was conscious or not. But I do wonder if that plays a factor into this thing too. I mean, how fun can it be calling those? Well, he makes it fun. But you know, let's face it winning changes everything, but he's an icon in directly answer your question. I mean, it's it's great that he's taking the time to go out because chances are very very good. And it's been this case in the past for me personally is they tell you when to go almost always fry for you to be that guy to say, you know, what I'm making the announcement. You're not making the announcement. It's not like I'm on the air one day. And then I'm not on the air the next day. It's like, I'll tell you. When my time on the stage is done and. That is a true tribute. And a sign of the greatness of Marty Brennan because he had that power that leverage. And I think that's crazy. I think it's. And I think I think he has that power because he is an icon because he's so great, exactly. And and the reason why he became an icon is because he's so good at what he's does. I mean, you know, it's not, you know, Marty Brennaman is a combination my opinion of a voice and a style. And it's a combination of those two things in his substance to he knows baseball. Oh, yeah. You said that because I was gonna add that on but go ahead. Yeah. Yeah. But you know, it's it's it's a combination of the substance of oyster and the style. I mean, let's face it by one of the reasons why I like Marty Brennaman is bought nece. Now, imagine why would make you like that. I mean, I mean, I I can relate to a guy who you know, he there's no BS about mardi gras. No he cuts to the chase real quick pulled up. Right. So I I really liked it. You know, you're thinking about art. Thing is a sense of humor. I mean, he's got a great sense of humor still has obviously a great sense of humor. And some of the things is good nature. Like, I love mardi and Tracy on baseball. I mean, I love that. You know that the sarcasm the dry with the humor, you know. I mean, it's just it's just really funny. I mean, I I think Marty's funny to oh. The guy's hilarious, and I mentioned earlier tonight on the program bulldog that. I have Marnie was the first guest on this show. When I started doing the nightcap in October of twenty twenty seventeen he was my first guest. And as I started a second season of it. They allowed me to do that. Because I'm not going to have the option of saying what I wanna go. I I already know this. He he was my first guest is I started the new season of this. And you can talk to Marty Brennaman about anything. It doesn't have to be about baseball or sports your basketball. You can talk to him about literally anything, and he's got a coherent. Great answer for you. No matter what you ask it. Well, that's another thing. You know, he pays attention to the world. I mean, he he he's capable of making a comment upon music movies. Oh, anything he comments about e commerce. I I I'm not close to Marty Brennaman. I've only met him a couple of time. The first time I met him when I was working there at wwl w and I was in the visitor's chair on Willie show, and he came in and he made a smart Aleck comments made.

"Baseball announcer. Marty Brennaman retired. Wow. Forty five years in the game. I was gonna say he's done it for a long long time. He was doing it. When I was a kid in Cincinnati. He was the reds play by play guy. When I was a kid gosh. That's how long he's been doing it. Many son. Tom does baseball and football. Thom brenneman. Yeah. His son's really good. Yeah. Marty. I think also had a run he did some national stuff too. I believe your son is about our age. Okay. Well, how old would mardi be mardi has to be an is. It doesn't have to be. But I'll bet mardi is in his eighties. I would think maybe seventy six Brandon says, okay? Okay. Really to be six kids young. What a career right? Yeah. What a career good for him. Great career. And then another sports note, James harden. From the rockets seventeen straight games of scoring thirty plus points. He said in that in that streak three times. He's over fifty. Wow. That is the longest streak since will Chamberlain back sixty three sixty four. So this is this doesn't happen. Very often. Yes. -nificant store stuff was he went one for seventeen from three the other night Sunday. Maybe so I was like, oh, that's. Snap. Don't even pay attention. And then I see that he's still managed to score forty in that game for the game. He's I don't know. But James harden to be consent me James harden is an unbelievably good score. He can score and he can score on anybody. But for him to have the kind of legacy that he wants whenever it's time for him to be done. He's got to. He's got to have more success in the postseason. It just has to happen. Yeah. Maybe he'll end up. You know, getting traded to a like a warriors team by speaking of the warriors, man what a blow out last night that was settled in this game. And I blinked and was twenty four to eleven and I'm thinking, that's okay. Denver long game. And it at the end of the first quarter. It was fifty one to thirty eight that was the most points ever scored in NBA history in an opening quarter. They had fifty one points. I don't wash a lot of NBA in the regular season. But I know the nuggets are doing well. Twelve th straight home games with wins. Until last night. I'll tell you what the last night because Denver Denver fell asleep a little bit early defensively. And then they all started rolling for the warriors. Right. I mean Klay Thompson was hitting and Steph curry was hitting and the big the big fellow was hitting them. I'm like this. This is going to get away from it seemed to me that the warriors were really focused in the game. And like, you know, you guys think you're good. They show you what good is beaten him before they came in and said, okay, it's time to show you what this is all about have our full attention. Exactly. And and. Yeah. And when the playoffs come it's a whole different game. I looked up hardens box score in that lost the magic on Sunday. They lost one sixteen zero nine he was eleven of thirty two from the field one of seventeen from three. And then fifteen sixteen at the line so eleven of thirty two so he made a bunch of. Is two pointers and a bunch of free fifteen from two point range in great at the free throw line, which is at one and seventeen is historically bad. I think he tied someone else's gonna want to seventeen Starks did that in the finals right for Houston. I mean against Houston for the Knicks. Yeah. They wouldn't put relondo Blackman just take a couple of shots. So you watch a lot of basketball, you watch the nuggets a lot. Yeah. They're obviously better. But do you think that they they're ready to compete for a title? I think I think that I mean, I could create a scenario honestly that they could find themselves in the Western Conference finals. I think they've got a good young team. They play well together. I mean for the most part they're much better defensively this year, they didn't play very good defense last night. But that happens at times, especially with that crew they were playing, but I don't think they could be Golden State in seven game series and the playoffs. I mean, if everybody's healthy and plain Houston has got off to a horrible start. Now, they're playing better. They've been doing it without Chris Paul so Houston's going to factor in there too. But Denver, I think is right there. You know, I think I think it'd be an interesting they have a hard time matching up with Houston. But I wouldn't make it a no-hoper they played the rockets in the seven game series. And I think anybody else in the west I think they'd have a chance to beat seems like in the NBA you have to have at least one superstar on your team nowadays, you have to have like three sometimes two or three and the nuggets don't have a superstar yet. Well, Yokich Yokich you call him a superstar. Absolutely, really, absolutely. I think he may become one. But I don't think anybody around the league knows who he is. Well, I I would say in the country. I mean, well, maybe not in terms of NBA fans because he plays in Denver. Right. But I think I think NBA people know who he is Charles Barkley. I heard on TNT probably a couple of weeks ago, say listen, right? I would vote for him right now is the MVP. I heard that as well. And he got my attention. Yeah. Big time. Because I think you gotta have that one guy that can take over a game. On. They've got a bunch of good players to really good players. Right. I mean Jamal Murray is going to be a real. I mean, he's a really good player. They've got guys. But they don't have as you said. I mean, all the great teams you look at Golden State that seems a bit unfair with what they have Houston. I mean, Chris Paul's a great player, James Harden's. A great player superstars club Capellas. Really good player. Right. So it'll be interesting. But I do think the nuggets can make a deep run this year into the player. Okay. Well, that's encouraging. Yeah. That'd be fun. Longtime nuggets have never won the title. But it's been quite a while since they got to the finals the Western Conference finals eighty-five. Wow. Didn't they do under George Karl? But they never be conference by the Lakers. Always. Okay. Yeah. I don't think. Hey, Brandon George didn't get them to the Western Conference finals. Right. Oh, nine with Chauncey. Trevor REEs kept stealing the pass. The Lakers that that was my apologies. Yeah. They got. They got there and eighty five that got beat by the Lakers Matombo. No. That was the English isel and fat leever enhanced didn't they get to win Matombo was here. And then he was just when they made the playoffs. Yes. When they they were the eighth seed they beat Seattle that year, the number one. The George Carlin was the coach I was doing the nugget TV, Pakistan back and forth. And then they play Utah in the next series. Seven games went down with down three games to none. Then won the next three games. Took him to a game seven in lost in Salt Lake. I remember living in L A in the eighties. When the Lakers were just so must have been just so much fun, then and then looking at the nuggets from afar, and like, wow. These guys are good. Yeah. I remember thinking these guys are really good scored a lot of points. But the Lakers were always better. That was Doug Moe was Doug, the Doug believe that what the Lakers disliked most was a team that would cause the Lakers wanted to run and run a lot of teams tried to slow them slow it down Doug believed. What they don't like. Is you run back at them? They run we run. And it was really entertaining defense. But it was entertaining basketball five twenty six what break here for some news. "Unlike any other Ladell and Silvy on ESPN one thousand thirteen Greco's in studio right now every Monday Wednesday and Friday brought to you by Chicago. Cut steakhouse to see Bob Costas is retiring from NBC after forty years trying to upstage Marty Brennaman mardi retiring after forty six years reds. And I love the news story about Brennaman says the man who calls come fans the most obnoxious people in the world is retired nailed it. And Tom's been doing reds games. Forever. T has. Yeah. The story earlier. I sent I ask merkin for Marty's number because I want to send mardi a nice heartfelt text. I listened to Marty and Joe nuxhall the late Joe nuxhall growing up in Cincinnati. With the big red machine was tender roundup. Third and heading home. That was great American gave me a number Senate tax, fifteen minutes later after pouring my heart out in the texts. Somebody texting back said haha wrong number. Sorry. I'm not mardi Hugo. I remember when I was in college, and I drove down to Cincinnati. And you know, what I just wanted to be sports caster. There's Marty Brennaman at the bar in this restaurant, and they got up the nerve to go talk to him. He couldn't have been nicer. He was the most encouraging gentlemen, ever sent me on my way, unless you told him you're a cub fan, and then he would ripped. I was gonna tease it for forty five. Now, we're on the subject he called the show. Yeah. So Waddle Waddle told the story today. He texted the wrong number. This is a true story. He he merkin did not then get him on. He was listening. I don't know why daughter lives in Chicago. And she listens to the station quite a bit. And she was in town because Marty was going to make the announcement. And they were listening to the show lights supposedly. That's how great is that. So then he told us to reach you guys. Have he wants to kiss and make up with cubs fans? Take a listen this from earlier, I hope when I come to Wrigley this summer that the cubs fans will let bygones be bygones, it'd be nice to me. And I in turn will be nice to. That's true. Yes. Happened and it's over with. And and I don't I don't even think about that. When I come into Chicago anymore. Yes, he wants to survive through retirement. It was all part of the gig to you got. Announcer a kind of a bit. But. He's the best. He's great Tom's. Awesome. Kostas? Of course, we'll keep doing MLB network and a bunch of other stuff waiting for other offers. I mean, he's he's the absolute machine there's nobody better than Bob. He's been the voice of many sports the Olympics. The NBA for a time Olympic coverage. Some sun him. I thought he basically going to have pink eye double pink. Now, isn't that? What didn't Mike to Rico took over? He did a duties. And did a great job. I thought he handed the torch them. ABC out him. When you read is the torch in her right knee. Hey, what's on your mind? Most today is the Dan Lozano statement about Manny Machado on the White Sox. Is that? Yeah. I thought it was very poignant. I mean, here's an agent who's basically had it with, you know, Bob, Nightingale and BUSTER only and everybody else going back and forth. It's a seven year deal for one seventy five. It's an eight year deal for over two. It's just back and forth. Just like, you know, stop just stop which I hope this is done by SOX fest. It's gotta be next week. Please. Why does it have to be because I'm tired of hearing? Gary editon sign socks they didn't know what they're doing by SOX fest. They really do because then spring training is two weeks away after that. Do you? Tell him the debate we were having with cap. Well, I I said on cap show cap, and I were talking and cap said to me after he had talked with I think Jim bowdoin. That's Jim bowdoin was telling him that, you know, all of these players are wanting shorter-term deals or they may alternately want player options. And I said the cabinet said, look, I don't care Manny Machado wants out after two years on I'm on the south side. I give him a contract if even if he leaves after two years of cab says absolutely not they're not ready to win now. So you're paying Manny Machado for two years. And then he could get up and leave right? When you're getting ready to win. And I so again, what's the downside to signing. Manny Machado to a deal that would allow him to get out of said deal after two years that he's not gonna be around for when you are ready to win while he'll be you could resigning. The White Sox could use a boost vac rent Ritchie's this deal. Let's..

Are you doing guys? First of all his name's Marty Brennaman. Our George Bush. But anyway, I thought it'd be fun to like people's favorite calls mardi and one of mine because he said, he never never planned. They make it was always spontaneous. "Saint Elizabeth healthcare post game show on. Dave Armbruster time. To get, some final thoughts on tonight's game from the two guys who called it Marty Brennaman. And Jeff Brantley. Thanks you while the formula Jeff Brantley oftentimes or more, often than not for that matter is rather simple get good pitching and get, some early run production. And take it to the house it seems like for the reds when they have gotten, good pitching especially good starting pitching they have been able to capitalize. Whether it'd be runs early or runs late, and the the runs tonight came. Early in the ball game You know I really think that Sal Romano handled. Tonight's issue with the rain about as good as you can handle it for a young pitcher now granted he didn't have to take the mound before. The rain came in but he did have to warm up he was totally. Loose he was in the reds dugout expecting to come out for the, bottom of the first inning and that never happened until an hour and forty something minutes later yeah and the added pressure of course as we talked earlier about pitching in front of maybe are close to two hundred people from settling in Connecticut a couple of hours away. But you would watching south. Tonight, he probably looked as calm and collected as any ballgame that we've, seen in pitch it didn't seem. Like he was overly head over adrenaline or was over excited about being on the. Mound or trying to throw the ball to hard he just went about his business about, as good as you could do it and now tomorrow we've got Robert Stevenson making his two thousand eighteen debut and he's going to have His work cut. Out for him given his mouth opponents going to be well I think for St. for Stevenson tomorrow If you. Really forget about, that Jacob degrom is on the other. Side and you concentrate on keeping the Mets off. The, board it's the reds offensive responsibility to take care of Jacob degrom Stevenson responsibility is just get the Mets app well. That's all coming up tomorrow when they kick. It out off around, twelve ten and the forecast. Not, bad at all tomorrow we never expected to kinda rain delay we had here. Tonight but all's well that ends well the red started strong and went on to post a seven to one, Wendy even this make this sixty one final score to even the series at a..
