"So i i think that they again like i said it's disappointing that this is the direction they took and also having taken it. They seem to have done reasonably well for themselves. "I heard radio. Um, all the shows all the interviews. If you miss Jack, billing him last night, he was outstanding guys, a piece of work. He is fantastic, Hilarious to talk to. We know what the obvious upgrade was for this team in the off season to get a shortstop. The musical chairs We talked about last night it spends and it spends in it. It stops and seats or grabbed, and now it stops and and the Reds are or left looking, and they don't have anybody. Phillies also need somebody. That leaves Didi Gregorius as The loan for the most part, the lone free agent option at shortstop. They're certainly trade options is a possibility. But I think we all agree and the Reds have made this clear. That's why they're pursuing shortstop Jose Garcia. They love him. They just don't love him enough Right now. The put him in a position to be in everyday shortstop in Major League baseball in 2021. They didn't really want to do it last year, they eventually had to. They did it, and it was tough to watch. They love him. Perfect, perfect world. He is their opening day shortstop of 2022. But no team with hopes dreams, aspirations of being in contention in 2021. Is going to feel the team with Jose Garcia at shortstop. The young man has not taken in it bad at double A. He hasn't taken it back at Triple A They jumped him from high a last year and three men. The deep end of major league baseball, double A is the most important development level of a minor league baseball player. He blew right past that to the major leagues. Kyle Farmer. Everybody likes He's not an everyday shortstop. He's just not. I mean, they nontendered him to begin with. They sign him to a split contract. He makes exit the place in the majors this year he makes except spends a place in the minors This year. He's versatile. He can play multiple positions, but he's not an everyday shortstop, and he certainly can't hit well enough. He certainly can't hit right handed pitching well enough to be considered a legitimate everyday shortstop in Major League baseball. Oh, by the way, he's played Ah, just short of 90 innings at the position, and he will be 30 in the upcoming season again. If you have hopes and dreams and aspirations of a contending in a division you don't have Kyle firmer as your everyday shortstop. So riddle me this Batman. No, that's that stands out in my mind because I saw I was watching that game on television when he tied the record and then I saw the next game when he hit the To break the record. I know the day and age were you know, I don't know. It's just I think athletes are less willing to, you know, to just play through stuff. And why would you the money so I don't know. It's just something I think and You know, kind of sad along the same lines of Brett Farve as the most consecutive NFL game started 297 like some like that, so I think those air Ones that are impressive. And I don't see him getting broken at any time. Soon. If not ever before we get into your record breaking stories. How about Janan? Erlanger? Jen? What do you have? It's just never gonna myself for a minute. But back in 1973. I was a kid of 13 years old and my Hank was going through this trying to break the record. I wrote him a letter as I've done throughout my life, and I got a got a new water back from him. It was a type written letter, but he signed it. It's got the brains. He's got the brains letterhead on it, and I'll just read you one of the lines, he says, very heartwarming to know that you were in my corner. I'll always be grateful for the interest you have shown in me. And it goes on upstairs on appreciate your warm witches and you're sentimental. Your settlement of brutality means more to me than you know, Um, you know, like I said, I grew up in the seventies are just turned 60 last year when I heard of his passing. I knew I had the letter and I came up here and one of the bedrooms in my house and I found a letter from Take care. Not right Throughout the years, I've written Bob House them. Not right. Nick Wagner on doll that but decided I had from, um Hank Aaron was what I'll never forget. Mom and I were actually after game 1974. I was 14 at that point, and then Hank hit the home run and the game was stopped. Everybody in the audience. Anybody in the crowd swept up my dear mother. He's still with me at the age of 19. Who I think she was saying that she kept thinking that we could be the hammer on the beat up. But that was also Marty Brennaman. First, a little thing with the lead and something that I will never forget. And I can this letter that I have. It's just something that Nowadays we have social media. I'm active on it, too. But you know, that's that's great that descends. Thank you. That's something to hang on to write their name, hair personal letter from home. I mean, certainly, if you're any kind of a baseball fan, you have heard of him no matter how old yours, But if you're my age and you probably remember him plain, don't you? Was born in 1980, so I don't really remember. That's right. He was gone before then, but out of the game before then, But he The guy and I'm your bread today that he was, he said he was more proud of how well he could hit as opposed to the home run thing is getting was up 3400 heads of so much 34 3500 hits and also again it never struck out, 100 times. Um, ever in a season in 23 seasons, I told you earlier. I looked up that stat last year in a year where what there was like 53 55 games played. There was guys that were striking out 90 80 sixties something times. It's crazy, different, different era. Let's talk to a man who was well associate ID with Hank Aaron. Our good buddy Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman, Marty Horia. I'm good guys. How are you? We're doing well. So, Marty, we were talking about this earlier. And for people who don't know, Marty that put your first game. Uh, well live game regular season game with the Reds was opening day 74 when Hank it that record tying home run Now, how many minutes had you been on the air when you made that call? Because I don't mean talk about boom right there. Well before batters in any I would say. Uh, probably from the time the game started until the time Baron's ball left the park. Maybe, uh, 20 minutes I was gonna say 15 $20 and and I know Marty, you famously said you don't plan your calls out. But you had have been kind of nervous is your first game and you know there's a good chance this guy's gonna hit a pretty significant home run. Well, I was nervous, Rocky, but I was nervous picked up from a personal perspective because it was my first game and 50 some 1000 people that riverfront and, um you know, I was awed by the number of people there and how special opening day was. In this city. Naturally, I knew what was going on as far as Henry was concerned, because it was a controversial, uh, issue dealing with the fact that the Braves didn't want to claim it all in the Syriza. They wanted to keep him off the field and sitting on 713 home runs until they got back to Atlanta the following Monday night. And the commissioner stepped in at the last minute and said No, he's gotta play two games. Hey, said we way can't fool around with the integrity of the game. And, you know, I understand why it's important that he hit the home run in Atlanta, but he's got to play two games in Cincinnati. So Once they settled that, But I really truly did not give any thought at all. What I was going to say in the event that he hit one because as I've said a million times, especially over the last couple of years, I I never tried to plan what I was gonna say, Uh, leading up to that eventful moment in the history of the game. I just I wasn't Good enough because whatever I planned to say would would sound preconceived and I just tried T O convey what was going on on the field and hopefully it would flow well and And it would convey you know what was happening at that moment, so I really didn't think a whole lot about what I was going to say. In the event, he hit one We're talking to Marty Brennaman and Marty. I got the impression that maybe you got to know Hank a little bit over the years. Yes, Yeah, we were around each other a number of times and the thing that so impressed me about him. I told somebody earlier today if you were to, uh, the define the term a true professional athletes. For a dictionary purposes. You would put his picture in there because he embodied everything that was important to a player that was gifted whether it be in the National Football League or in MLB or the Hockey League or the embassy. Whatever the case might be. And he had everything. He had incredible talent. He had a certain grace and dignity about him that that that people were attracted to Um it almost every time I was with him. Whether it be a Cooper's down or especially a, Cooper said. I guess it was where it made me realize he would always get one of the larger ovations. Even in an event where he was surrounded by great players from the past like it is at the Hall of Fame induction weekend, he always seemed to get a around of applause and cheers a little bit higher than most people. And I think it was because whether a person had ever known him maybe had not even known anything about him other than what they watched on TV, heard on the radio or saw in person What they went to a game. They could tell that he was a different Type of person. He had relatively no ego. Um, And so he was just a great man, and it was kind of interesting two years ago, and I was going through my last season We were in Atlanta..

So he tells this story back in the early 19 fifties, and then he was playing for the Indianapolis clowns of the Negro League. And they were having an office, a rain delay or whatever it might be. He was in a restaurant behind the stadium there in Indy. And they were having breakfast as a teen. And as they waited for the rain to stop, so they go to the ballpark and get ready for the game that afternoon, they heard. Plates breaking in a kitchen. And he said that was the worst sound I've ever heard in my life. I still even those later years can can remember in my mind that sound of breaking glass and even when he heard things break throughout his life to make him cringe because what they were doing then in the early 19 fifties in that restaurant Is that in and I think they're in D. C at the time As a matter of fact, so here they are in Washington. Land of the free home of the brave. And they were destroying the plates. They were actually breaking the plates. That had touched the forks. The forks that had been in the mouths of black men. He said that if dogs have eaten off those plates over Washington used them, but because they were black, they actually physically destroyed the plates. That Henry Aaron and his teammates eight on on that day. Has someone who wasn't alive back then. In being relatively older now. Can't even fathom that I can't even Can't even get my mind around that thinking. So, Yeah, We've got a lot of stuff. A lot of things We have to do it make things fair. There's no doubt about it. There's issues of accountability as well. There's a lot of factors in this whole thing. Not making excuses. But going, you know, for those who believe, man. Things haven't gotten better. Well, I mean, Just think about that. I, You know, it's so foreign and so disgusting to me personally. But I can't even comprehend that that would have ever happened, right? You know, we talk about people who are deniers of history, for example. Deny that the Holocaust or 9, 11 are all these things that ever happened. You wonder why? But that just brought me back to a lot of childhood memories. I thought they were really fun Team but a national broadcaster. Not a local one, because we, you know we grew up with the local one. I had Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall on the Reds games, and they were great but a national voice that's different. Um, And that's where I have Keith Jackson. It was just something about when Keith came on. He had that excitement had that twang and it felt like he truly enjoyed the gang. I am a club when they pulled Brent Mussburger at the end off college football. I kind of missed that I thought he liked, he said. Big game. Um, I always liked him better. Is this studio host, But yeah, I I understand that, Um, where you You know, Johnny Miller in golf is another voice. Where? When I heard it, it always sounded.
