"Or cracked off at the end, it means we've been chewing. If it's a normal tapered hair that just hasn't growing, then it has a totally different appearance. So that's one kind of quick down and dirty way we can prove or disprove it but cats being in closet liquor. But there are a lot of different things that come to mind when you tell me about a kitty. And this is on both sides of the abdomen, right? Yeah, both sides. And as I say, maybe it's when I'm not home or I don't know. Yeah. So the number one thing that I think of is in general, when we focus on skin diseases. So food allergy, seasonal allergies, can often present as a hair loss and a lot of different ways. But sometimes with a symmetrical hair loss in this area. And that can be a challenging diagnosis to figure out. So we usually go and kind of go down the list and sometimes knock off those things we can screen for. So things like skin mites, cats can actually get a type of a skin might that is really hard to find, even with repeated skin testing. So if we're suspicious of it, we'll actually go forward and treat for it. They can get ringworm without actually getting the type of lesions that we expect in people. And actually both those two things, some cats can actually have, but not show any symptoms which actually makes it even more confusing. And then there's other things when I think of more maybe hormonal or more internal things, we can see hair loss in this area associated with some types of liver, pancreas problems, cancers, and less commonly some hormone things like with the adrenal glands, but so there's a lot of things that I mentioned that we can check for kind of simply some not so simply. And that would involve senior veterinarian having some basic lab work and some skin testing done. That would be where I would start off with. Okay. She seems fine, eats fine. I've made no changes in diet in 6 years or litter box or anything changed. And she's a calm cat. I did have a dog. He passed away a few years ago, she was very close to him all the time and she had a little brother cat and he passed away a couple of years ago also. I could it be from loneliness that she's doing this? If she's a pretty calm canon general, we do see subsets of cats that have a lot of anxiety that will overgrow. So that's on the list, but it's at the very bottom. And again, we'd have to check for things. So depending a little bit on how prepared you are to look into this. I mean, there's kind of my best plan that I would do, and then there's kind of the budget plan. But I think seeing your veterinarian and doing some skin testing and lab work would be the first thing. If we don't come up with anything, then a lot of times I'll treat for mites and I will do a diet change because food allergy. When that occurs in cats, it isn't something that you switch to and they have a problem with. It's something they've been fed their whole life. And then they develop a sensitivity to chicken or that's what I was wondering. Is there a food you could suggest I could maybe switch to this possibly not allergic type of situation or no? They're definitely are. But the ones that I'm going to recommend are actually true hypoallergenic diet. So before you get into that expense, I would definitely invest in that visit to the veterinarian. The ones that I do like to use, if I have a suspected cat with food allergy, I do like purina's HA, which is a hydrolyzed protein diet, and then I also heals has one called ZD and that's also a hydrolyzed diet. And I can tell you a story I had a kitten that was 6 months old, years ago. And it was hairless almost chewing itself up. And this little kitten I put on a hypoallergenic diet was actually the ZD and my goodness within a month and a half. We were back to normal hair and just such a different and it just changed the personality. So some of these things, it's a little bit of a road to get their diagnostically, but it can be so well worth it. So the mice would be just that licking. It could be. And like I said, mites can actually occur in cats. I've had it happen in cats where one cat is totally symptom free. And the other cat is having problems. But if we scrape both cats, we actually couldn't find it on the cat with no symptoms. So we know it can be there. The one thing I didn't even mention, oh my gosh, I can't believe I skipped this. How? Why didn't you stop me? Is fleas. It's flea allergy, so cats are also a critter that when I talk about allergies, they can have horrible flea allergies. And because they're such tidy groomers, it's sometimes possible that you will never see one adult fleet on them because they eat them. So that's even a possibility. So your vet will probably want to do a good sleep treatment as well. Yeah, okay. Well, I appreciate your help and guidance. And I'll take her over to the vet, but check out those situations. Hopefully they can help her out. Absolutely. Well, good luck, Jim, let us know what they come up with. And how things turn out. I will I really appreciate your call too. Thank you, and your show is fantastic. Thanks, Jim. We appreciate it. Oh, good. Tell a friend about it. I will. Are you kidding? It's great, I will. Thanks a lot. Take care, Jim. "See Judy has booked another humdinger of a show today, doctor Marty Becker will be back. If you travel with your pets and we all travel with our pets. Sure, we do. There are certain things you should bring with you every time you travel. And he's going to have that list in just a few minutes. He's got three things. Three things. You must have. I can't even imagine what they are. I don't know. I'm going to stick around for that. Also, on a much more dim note, we all have to deal with pet loss. Unfortunately, these beautiful creatures don't live as long as we do. Well, unless you're like a cockatoo like gurney, who will live forever. Yeah. Yes, she will. When we deal with pet loss, oftentimes, you get a little embarrassed to tell people because you're afraid they'll think you're crazy that you're so emotionally attached to your pet and roll their eyes. Give you that look. And especially when it's your work, you know, they don't understand that you want to take a couple of days off just to mourn or grieve over a pet loss. I'm so glad we're going to cover this. I worked at a radio station one time that I had two days off after a dog drowned and it was tragic. And I was called into the office after I returned to work and said, it's a dog. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's too bad. You know what? Those people need to be taken outside and you don't take care of a joy, you know. You just tell Joey. It'll go over and I'll break some knuckles. But here's the thing for all of us.

"He's America's favorite veterinarian. And he is also the king of fear free. Can I just say male favorite veterinarian? Because doctor Debbie, I'm going to throw paper airplane denim right now just like you're my favorite female. Veterinarian. Doc, how are you doing? Doing good, Friends, happy new year to all of you. Doctor Marty Becker joining us. And I see on the board that we have, how to pet a dog and cat properly. And I got to tell you, I'm in my 50s now. He thinks I made it up. And I think that I know how to pet my dog or cat properly. Apparently, I might not be. Well, I'll give you an update on fear free first, you know? Fake thank you guys for all of your support. We love it. Embryonic stages. We ended the year with 7000 individuals registered for certification. So those are veterinarians and technicians. Awesome. But here's the reason I'm telling that, we're doing 12 symposia this year. So we were in Tampa recently. 300 people in the room learning about how to reduce their anxiety and stress and how to increase enrichment activities and pets. And one of the things we talked about was reteaching people how to pet a dog, how to approach a dog, how to approach a cat how to pet a cat or not pet a cat. I always tell people, I'm not gifted like temple grandin that I've always had this gift since a child and just now I get to be able to manifest my gift in this later part of life. You know, I'm somebody that was moved by a veterinary behaviorist into taking action to reduce their anxiety stress to look at emotional well-being. But there's 50 boarded behaviors. There's animal handling experts. And it was one of those that told me three years ago, we were doing a demonstration and she goes, there's no other way to tell you this, but you're petting dogs wrong. I'm like, I'm like, what? What did you say? I mean, that's just like, how do you pet a dog wrong when you petted a dog since you were a little kid? It seemed to work. But what I was doing, which most people do in a veterinary profession or things is they approach a dog from the front because we love dogs. So you see a dog? Oh my God. Oh my God, what's your name? What kind of breed is it? And you look at it and you lean down over it and you start pending it on the head or the first thing you can reach. Well, first of all, dogs have great peripheral vision. They have really terrible vision above them. So you guys are probably in the studio right now. And I don't care if you're looking at each other, looking at the microphone, you can still see the ceiling above you, because we can see above. When you approach a dog and go to Pettit from above, they tend to snap because they can't see. Places that you don't want to pet them. You don't want to pet them on the top of the head. You don't want to pet them down the dorsal midline. That's what I would always do. I just use a good boy. I'll use era to you bad. You bad? You know you bad. Down the dorsal midline when the places they like best are the side of the neck, the side of the chest and the base of the tail. Okay, on the side of the neck or on the chest or the base of the tail. Okay. And more of a more of a script like it's almost for women. Think of getting your hair washed when you go to get when you go get a color cut shampoo or something and how great that feels when it's kind of in the scalp. That's what? Oh, yeah. And then for cats, okay, here's the thing I do with cats. I knew the stomach was a bad idea, you know? I got that part. But again, on top of the head and that well, I shouldn't say on top of the head. On the neck and down the dorsal midline are not good either. The base of the tail again is a great spot. But the three best spots on a cat are the lips, the chin and those hairless areas above the eyes. Also the cheek, where you're not touching a whisker. Those four places. And we teach people in the veterinary community now, don't go below the neck unless you're engaged. Just leave that alone. Don't go to third base. My cat will actually come up and rub the side of their mouth against me. So I figure that's an okay area. You said it was an okay area just right on the side of the mouth. I love that. They love the lips. And what they're doing, this is something else. Oh my gosh, we've done so much stuff wrong. In the name of sterility. This doctor Debbie or doctor Marty, the way we always practice was to clean the cat cage out completely. So moving from one spot to another cage, new letter box, new food ball, new water ball, new towel, everything. That's wrong too. They love to establish their scent, and so they've established their little area and now you strip it all off and put them in area of no, which causes an immense amount of stress. So now what we do is we spot clean and use products that don't destroy the olfactory neurons, so there's actually these new hydrogen peroxide cleaners that are like killing machines, but it just breaks down into water and oxygen. We just send people home, you know, you're done trading the cat apps ass and they stick it in a laundry hamper, a cardboard cat carrier, taking home and dump it out, and then it get attacked by the other cats. I mean, yeah. That's wrong too. Now we know how to leave them in the carrier on opposite sides of the door, then you take a towel and you wipe all the cats down with the same towel. So now everybody feels a little different. Well, if people want to learn more about fear free and I'm encouraging not only veterinarians that are listening that are practicing now to check it out, but also if you just have an animal or you are interested in finding a veterinarian that practices fear free or you want to get your veterinarian to find out more about fear of free certification, where should they go? They should go to fear free pets dot com. This year we're going to start certifying a household. It's going to be called fear free, happy home. Oh, wow. Doctor Marty Becker, I salute you. Thank you so much for joining us again today. And I want to thank you too. You guys have been great friends to pets people in the profession for years. So thank you for the early energy and support you've given this. Thank you. Okay, we got to get on out of here. Why don't you go grab your pets right now? We're going to leash up everybody here in the studio, take them out for a walk because they're a little bit antsy. Including me, I'm getting my leash on right now with my little beautiful collar. Who is a good dog? Who's a good boy? Is hella good boy? Don't forget if you need your fix. Check out animal radio dot pet or download the animal radio app. See you later. Bye bye. Bye. Becker is back with this right. How to pet your dog or cat properly? That's correct. Okay, I didn't realize that you could do that wrong. I guess you could go the wrong direction. You could against the grain. Yeah. Who knows? Laurie, what are you working on over there in the newsroom? Well, I have for you coming up a story that I might just nominate for this guy for mailman of the year because typically mailmen postal carriers mail carriers don't get along with dogs. I've had that experience several times. But I think it's understandable, but what this guy has done for a dog? The best. Really? I can not wait to hear it. Yeah. Another great mail carrier story. Robert cymro, what do you have planned for this show? Oh, I've got a good one for everybody out there. This one will be the millions of reasons I am a pet parents, especially after we had a judge in Canada ruled that a dog is just simply a dog and therefore property. So I'm going to have some fun with that. Okay, let's go to the phones for your calls right now. Hi Robert how are you doing? I'm doing great. Thank you so much. How can we help you today? Well, I have a little problem, I was wanting your advice on. About 5 years ago, our next door neighbors cat had a litter of about 5 kittens. And when the kittens were O three, four months old, they suddenly moved leaving leaving the cats to fend for themselves. So in the morning I woke up with 5 hungry kids at my door and of course being the sucker that I am. I have been feeding them for the last 5 years. I just give them some dry in a little bit of wet cat food in the evening. And that's about the extent of my care, but certainly I have been feeding them every night. Now the problem is, we are going to be moving. So I'm just sort of wondering what to do with the cats. I've sort of hinted around at some neighbors and nobody's really interested in taking on that responsibility. So I didn't know if I should just let them fend for themselves. Should I catch them and take them to the pound, which I prefer not to do? And I just wanted your advice on that. I'm assuming these babies aren't spayed or neutered. Nobody's taken. Oh no, they were they were spayed and neutered before before they left. Oh, okay. So when you say a litter, I was imagining kittens that were blossoming and growing and reproducing mass quantities. That's not quite quite lucky that they did take the responsibility and do that before they left. Yeah. And you know what? I know that there's cats that can live in feral colonies and they can have decent lives. But golly, I would say that as much as we might hate to have to introduce them into the shelter system. There is somebody who wants to take care of these kiddies, and we can find them. So I'm really an advocate of getting them picked up. Okay. Taking them either to the shelter or through some of the different adoption agencies maybe in your area that will help to place feral cats or for cats that are displaced because it sounds like they're not really feral in the sense of they've been wildcats that grew up outside. They were probably pet cats that these folks left behind, I'm assuming. Kittens and like I said, I have been feeding them, but they catch their fair share of birds and lizards and so forth. But I guess cast generally don't do well when to sort of turn out it would be better to take them to the to some sort of agency. I would definitely encourage you to get some kind of humane agency involved. And I guess myself, I personally, I guess I would have a hard time leaving them behind knowing that your other neighbors aren't too interested in helping. Will they fend for themselves? Yeah, but it's gonna be a rough road and certainly the potential for further disease or injury outside. You know, I just, I am definitely an advocate of trying to get them the help that they need. And it's no different. You know, just if we have someone who's displaced from their home, as far as trying to get them to an organization, a resource that we can use to help them. And it would be great if one of.

"Grab your pets bring around the radio just like Joey has done. Joey has brought gurney into the studio today. Why into the studio? Little strange, a little different. I don't think he's been in the studio. No, I'll tell you what, could you say a little freaked out, I think today. Being that I have three counties that are trying to attack her, but for good reason, I have to tell you, I haven't worked on in the house, so the confined to a smaller space. And I think they just hold getting on each other's nerves, but she thinks she's a little bit tougher than she really is, so she is deciding the brothers that she's going to attack them, which she doesn't normally do. She jumping on their backs and they're fighting back. Okay, I understand of a beating. She's dive bombing them. Yes, she's dive bombing. I'm not winning though. We have a gurney in the studio. We have Gordy. We have lady bug the studio stunt dog. That's why you should bring your animals around. They enjoy the show too. Whether or not you know toll free one 8 6 6 four O 5 8 four O 5 to talk to doctor David or Joey villani right now. Bottom of the hour we're going to do a quick check of the news. What are you working on for this hour, miss Brooks? Well, they have just completed a study on how we talk to our dogs. And especially, aiming at that part of when we do baby talk to our dogs. Good boy. So I'll tell you what they found out. I do that all the time. I do that. I can't help it. Well, you know they're looking at us going. Stop talking like that. Silly, why are you talking like that? I think she likes it. You think she likes it? She wags her tail comes running to me and put her head down for good scratch and I think she likes it. Okay, more on that in just a few minutes. Also, doctor Marty Becker, he's back on the show today and he's going to be talking about how to pet your dog or cat properly because you could be petting them wrong. How do you find them wrong? I imagine you go against the grain. Tell us the fact is good. I'm guessing it's not so much in the mannerism of the way you pet them, but how to maybe approach a stray dog to pet them. You know, you know. Okay, that makes sense. I don't know. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm thinking. Okay. I've been bitten that way as a child, but, you know, approaching them wrong. Okay. Okay. Well, doctor Marty Becker will be with us in just a few minutes. Joey, what are you working on for the show today? You know what? We're going to talk about the importance of when your dog has a skin condition, how regular grooming can actually help with the, along with the meds that they're on, the shampoos condition is an echo this. That's a good topic because the biggest reason people visit the vets is because of skin allergies, skin conditions. Are we ready to go to the phones now? Let's do it. We have Lin on the phone highland. Hi. Where you calling from today? Well, I'm in Arkansas right now. I'm in short driver. Well, welcome to the show. I have doctor Debbie right here to answer your questions. Hi. What I was wanting to know is can I see my cat raw meat and fish as opposed to any of the cam stuff so the pure and what I have had vitamins and tarring to it if I did. I'd have to say that we know that Achilles are obligate carnivores. So they need meat. I am not a fan of feeding raw meat and fish in a substitution for a good quality balanced commercial cat food. For a couple of reasons. And you mentioned one thing taurine, which is an important amino acid that if we do feed a raw meat raw fish based diet, we're going to very likely run into multiple deficiencies, including a touring deficiency, which is so important for cats. They have a four time greater need for this amino acid than dogs do. So it's very easy for them if we don't meet their needs with diet that they can have a problem reading leading into all sorts of heart problems and eye problems. No, I don't think that feeding just a supplement is going to make up for that. There's also going to be other amino acids, nutrients. There's even kitties that will have a thiamine deficiency, which is a B vitamin. And that can actually result because feeding raw fish actually can have a enzyme that breaks down the ability of the body to absorb B vitamins. So that can also cause a whole round of other types of problems. So my bottom suggestion is, I really would recommend going there if the base of the diet is a good quality cat, diet, then I think you're better off to do that. And I know oodles of people that would say, oh, I've fed my cat, tuna here and there. But you just got to be very careful. There's a higher risk of bacterial related infections, these nutritional deficiencies. And I just don't know that I would really want to gamble with that. Plus traveling, my gosh, isn't it easier just to make a.

"That's my dog when i come home town. Cable wanna talk to you about your dogs behavior. There's a big difference between dog training and behavior. One of the most common problems we hear about is accessible barking. Dogs are gonna bark. It's part of their nature. That's how they communicate and sometimes barking is good. You know you want your dog to warn if somebody's coming in your house. Certain dog breeds bark more than others. They're brett to be barkers and dogs have different. Barks that you can learn. Let's talk about the different reasons. Why dogs bark. We already talked about the warning bark. Dogs also bark when they get anxiety. Some dogs have separation anxiety and they'll bark all day dogs also bark when they're being playful when they want your attention and when they're board now bark when another dog barks so now that we know a little bit about why dogs bark. How do you stop it as always positive reinforcement and reward of the techniques. I like to use if somebody who works long hours. And you're away from the household day. You dogs probably going to bark but you can reduce some of that barking by making sure. Your dog gets plenty of exercise getting of that pent up energy. We'll get rid of some of the barking. If your dog is barking at you pay no attention in fact. Turn your back on your dog. More attention you give your dog the more you're actually encouraging the barking. Yelling doesn't work if you're ignoring your dog. And he stopped sparking. That's when you give praise good dog. You can give a tree to in fact whenever your dog is doing desired behavior. Like just laying still and being calm. That's a great time to walk over and pet your dog. If that's not working correct your dog poker in the neck with your fingers in colorado can give her correction when you need to and use a sound award like heck no after you. Do that immediately. Friend animal radio. Let's see. are you know who we have on line. Three stephen rowley. Hi stephen harry doing very good. I haven't the audience about you yet. You are an author. That's this is your first book right yet. That correct ever the novel billion the put by first book and correct me. If i'm wrong. I heard rumor and i'm trying to see if i remember you got like a million dollars up front before ever writing this book and never having any previous books Something like that. I did write the book On back without an offer And and the simon schuster who published the book read it and they were quite quite generous with me but i. I did have to write the book. But that's an incredible journey that you've made and it's incredible. It's amazing book. Yeah yeah it's quite a cinderella story if you will. It's it's really quite amazing. When i sat down to write the story i did. It's very much a novel. But i did have a dog named lily a dachshund who i had since From some her puppyhood until she was Most thirteen years old and she comes to cancer and I i am a writer of other stores have been a screenwriter and over for newspapers and things like that but I was really surprised. By how sidelined. I felt by by grief after losing this. This friendship and So i just sat down to write never expecting fully to to write a novel or to even see something published but i just started writing to To sort of help me heal and understand that loss. It was cathartic for you. It was very cathartic. And think. I tried to just be as as emotionally true to what i was feeling. And somehow that really seems to be resonating with with readers okay. The book is called lily and the octopus and the octopus in this book is metaphorically. A tumor is that correct. That is correct. She had a brain tumor. And so when. When i sat down i of my goal was to write about attachment and loss and there was something About the metaphor of an octopus something that has tentacles and can have a a sort of literal stranglehold on you That i thought serve that that well that sort of talked about how difficult it can be to to let go when it's time. I think you did an excellent job. I i couldn't put the book down. I thought it was great. The way you described it you you took the reader with you on it. And we were there and i could just picture. This tumor lillies head. And i think it was a really fantastic. Thank you so much and for a book about about sort of loss and grief is not hopefully without humor. And you know it's a real celebration of tire and our relationships with With our pets with your first pet. I had dogs growing up I grew up in rural maine and we had a big house with a with a barn and whatnot and we had dogs but but dogs You know i grew up in the seventies and eighties and our relationship with our pets with just a little bit different than these are more sort of outdoor dogs and very much pets and lily was the first dog that i had not only that i raised from puppy into until old age but also that that was very much a fully integrated family member when you discovered her. How did you discover that there was something wrong with lilly. She actually had a little lump on her about of her is so that That did start to grow I never you know i'm not. I'm not clearly Quite as around the bend is the narrator of this novel is i never actually thought that it was an octopus. But there was something about having a lump there that Sort of led me to thinking about that that metaphor but Unfortunately it was very quick moving and it was only a couple months from the time. I discovered it until till the end of her life..

"Him how you okay and is the lump is on the inside of the eye an outside what what area coming on the outside. Okay we'll forever the good majority of of little masses along dogs eyelid. They tend to be benign growths In of those the most commonly are type called a my bowmen gland tumor so downsizing by far the the biggest Cause of these type of things so those type of things not to say that can cause a problem in sometimes they can actually get pretty big kind of even get a collar cauliflower growth off of them and they can rub on the eye so Some of these really can cause ulcers in the eye or just comfort so the treatment of those I i'd say get a look at it and he'd hold up to the mike i can you know. Try to get a picture but you know getting a vet. I on it is a big thing. Because sometimes there are types of lumps and bumps. they give us a little bit more excited If they're pigmented kind of black color sometimes that gets us a little bit more concern because we can get melanoma a more serious that occurs on the eyelid And then some types can be a little bit. More destructive to the area like squamous cell carcinoma aware that because of the sun related issues so that for dogs chew can occur on the eyelids so that it would they would they tap it off and and or yeah so when we haven't eyelid humor really much We have to remove those type of things with a pet under anesthesia. And i get that question all the time. Can you do it with my pedal. Wake no not gonna happen. Not many dogs will sit for that so from there but yes we can do a couple of things we can. If it's large and it goes into the lid we might do like v-shaped wedge so we take out a little wedge of the eyelid and so things back up If it's small it doesn't seem to go very deep than yes. we can Kind of cauterize either with an electro qadri at my office. We have a laser that we use in that helps to kind of Ab- late the tissue or just kind of Destroy it on the surface so that technique can you can be used for some of the smaller Or less Less serious ones if we're worried that it's more serious tumor. We're gonna probably go for that. V wedge because we want to get nice clean margins and in solve that problem for the long haul looking at it. If i brought her the office. Could you look at it and say that looks like looks like that in some cases. Yeah usually but i would say just. Because the great majority of these type a tumors are my boom england tumors and you know breed sometimes gives us some clues because we know that there are some dogs like poodles. Her spaniels Collies that tend to get these Benign eyelid tumors. A little bit more frequently. So we've got that there's sometimes a little bit of the odds game. We can play to to help. And that may not help your situation since you have a dog. But i was wondering whether or not to make an appointment so it sounds like i should absolutely i would definitely encourage in could be something we can handle pretty simply and just sometimes a little bit of you know monitoring watching and waiting is acceptable. These type of things. You're like pro texture. The racial appreciate. Thanks for the call. John you're listening to animal radio. Call the dream team now with a free animal. "Kind of unusual a relapse con the I mean can you. Can you have a relapse on aetna. Not typically now in in just a backup for me with tetanus we kind of knew that in the human world has lockjaw in what was basically the disease caused by a bacteria colclough stadium and we see that where there's a puncture wound. This little organism lives on the soil. So if through some kind of wound that gives it an entry into the animal's body Then we can get this problem. It's not terribly common. We never see it in cats and dogs. So you're an unfortunate situation here with your little baby because It really isn't all that commonly seen now. When i got to ask you win this first happened originally. Was there a wound. Was there some kind of puncture that we could identify within about a week or two before this. No we couldn't find anything okay because he really is very unusual most ons with tetanus once we get them on a good antibiotic penicillin or metronidazole. They have that initial treatments in it. May last about seven days Some lingering effects may be for a month but after that we should be done and over west. There shouldn't be a sustained problem now. Up to almost twenty five percent of the cases of tetanus in dogs can actually be from something like a foxtail wound. And if you are seeing an on again off again problem then that might be something. I would direct you to make sure we're really looking very hard Because those kind of wounds are very small Sometimes they can be a chronic wound between the toes in certain areas. But the really shouldn't be an easy explanation than i could tell you why tennis would reoccur in this. We have Still have a festering wound of some sort In an otherwise you know. I guess the long term effects Is there possible damage than urologic system I cannot say that. I've ever read or heard of any long-term facts As far as now is he having seizures or anything like that not necessarily seizures but his right Less is affected especially as with Hind leg it's almost like a scratching motion okay impacts. He's he's always even as a puppy scratched his left side. But you'll see his legs start. We started to call him thumper. Because it'll still just you know he could be laying there and start something you know. If if he gets excited it happens. We did have him on the metro. I forget how you say word tonight is that yes we had him on that antibiotic and you know and then i read something that it can cause timur and tumor a cancerous tumors in animals. So we after about a month. We took him off of that. And now he's on and off on cipro what having trying to We're just afraid you know. Get full blown tetanus again because he gets very strange. It's it's affecting neurologically you know even a personality standpoint Nl i don't know you know. I guess we have it but you know he's always in our backyard. We rarely take him out in the field anymore. Sure in you know occasionally. It's more when when we're battling a dog that that has the techno sexually active sometimes we will use like muscle relaxants Such as methyl carbon mall so something like that. I can see But yeah. I'm just a little puzzled as why we're having more of a long term thing here with with your baby unless we've got some other little kind of a seizure disorder Or something else going on If we did sustain some damage to to something in the back end. So i'm gonna kinda scratch my head here a little bit of shelton And as far as i'm assuming you're you're vets working diligently to try to figure this out But it might really warrant Kind of looking at that area on his spine a little bit more in really looking for any evidence of you know a chronic wound or any kind of area where we could explain that. This happened from his only two cases in thirty years. It's not common. It really is not In fortunately animals are fairly resistant to the effects of Tetanus and And a lot of cases some of these wounds that they sustain you know we notice him we treat them. They get on antibiotics Always a concern or cause of alarm. So you you've got an unusual baby there shelton and i wish you the best of luck with him. Hopefully we'll find some results and get our baby back to normal there so best wishes to you and thank you for calling. let's hit up john..

"You get nice mushy poops but i thought possibly because last it was exactly almost to the day a year ago we had a problem with their they never could figure out what was wrong with her and i thought it a possible but so then we'll probably a back problem very likely and you know. I can make some really weird diagnosis. How through there are some types of like moldy foods that can actually cause a basically a mycotoxin a tape of a fungus that that is toxic illogic system So some pets can have that if they get into old theory products garbage even some old nut. Sometimes things like that can cause those problems So that's a possibility. But that's kind of a far stretch and usually we have some pretty good information that has kind of gotten into some things they shouldn't have caused that. So yeah i would definitely be sure that with your With your rat terrier that we're we're watching things that can be signs of back problems reluctance to jump up and down in just makes special accommodations. Be ready that if we do have a future back things. This is definitely not a pet. We want to be very athletic. Jumping off haya areas in the home So we use a little extra caution. Maybe even use a harness You know for walking purposes so That'd be my guess they're an okay curious but it's unbelievable. I mean we were looking at little doggy carts on the internet and even audibly have we're gonna have to put her down well. I'm glad it turned out like it. "Would be. It became a court case because she was found in a house abandoned so it became an abuse case case okay so she was in the shelter five and a half weeks while this case was going on and during which time she was hailing from on so sunday now is has people around her all the time i am you know with her. She goes with me everywhere. And but if you're not near her whatever she linked response what whatnot. How does she get the name sunday. I guess that's what they called her at the shelter. Okay so when we as the rescue got her. Some people want to change the name and my theory is that you know. She's going to be adopted out. Somebody else is going to change her name. Maybe but right. Now she's got five weeks or five and a half weeks of sunday being called sunday under her belt. That's enough chain now are sunday. Are you fostering her or did you adopt her. Because i know you're we're fostering her okay. I'm seeing you. But if she threw this before it had plenty of fosters who became auspice cases. And if she had to stay here forever. That would be fine with me. She's absolutely adorable. She's she is the show sunday sunday sunday. I'll have a go at your paper. Okay how do we have time for one more to do. Because we're talking about shelters. We all believe in pulling dogs from shelters cats. Whatever kind of animals and there is so many shelters in especially in the summertime experienced a horrific conditions are conditions because things like air conditioning. Maybe really old. But there's this shelter in kentucky in martin county the city is i knez or the and they've got some really bad news last week that their shelter is full of toxic mold in the walls in the ceiling everywhere and when you have mould like that it has got to be cleaned by like has by has met people because it can literally kill so this rescue that has the the license to run the shelter through the county is now responsible for paying to have cleaned up and all this stuff and they've got twenty dogs and forty seven cats that they've got to get out of there so and then on top of all of that the expensive that every single animal before it leaves has to be vetted because the black mold can cause neurological issue humans and for animals. So you have to know the health of the animal before it is put into foster or adopted so if anyone out there if you know anyone in says or martin county kentucky we hope you'll let them know there's big problem at their local shelter or maybe you can help them out will put their information on our web page. Let's hit the phones. We have an on the phone. Diane hi i'm fine. Thank you today. i'm in clovis california near fresno lovely fresno right. What can we do for you. I have a question and it's possibly if dogs the allergic to black mission figs and i'll be real brief. I have a little miniature rat. Terrier weighs about ten pounds two and a half years old very very active last monday. We not or two weeks ago monday. We notice she was dragging her back leg a little bit by stay. She couldn't stand up. We had to put a sling under her back legs. She was just bragging them took her to the vet. They did that test where they pinched her. Legs all the way up to the middle of the back. There was no flinching. She was like completely paralyzed for two days. I thought it was going to have to put her down. The doctor tried dosa d. m. s. o. Along with hit be given. Her predecessor was on a thursday by friday. She was able to stand on her legs a little bit by saturday. She was walking a little wobbly by sunday. She was running and chasing the dog along. The fans could sarah possibility because a year ago we almost lost her and it was. It's exactly a year ago and they never could find out what was wrong with her then but she just didn't eat. She was listless and dehydrated and everything concerned about the figs being possible. Cause of that possibly or else could she have had the vet said he took x rays. There was nothing that jumped out at him but possibly a ruptured disc or A dislocated discs but to recover that quickly possibly. Yeah and when we talk about a disc problems in dogs You know it's a spongy little cushion between the bones right below the spinal cord so if one of those Very suddenly impacts spinal cord Causes a lot of pain can lead to sudden paralysis. Some pets can respond very quickly and very favorably to steroids. Such as prednisone or decks and methods. So that's possible. And there are some more obscure things that can cause me be a temporary paralysis. If with that therapy that he described she improved. I would actually have some faith. Perhaps that we may have a bad back and you know something to watch for in the future because a lot of pets can go on to have future episodes with their back whether or not that year prior that was related to that. I don't know Some pets early back problems will be uncomfortable. They just don't act themselves may be grumpy even and not necessarily show signs of paralysis. So i can make a case that perhaps Generally i can tell you. Figs are pretty Harmless dogs unless they eat lots of them. And then.

"Our newest air talent sunday in the newsroom. Right now along with lori brooks coming up just a few minutes. Five reasons birds making credible pets. And i think joey can speak to that very well. Also coming up in just a few minutes the first ever cloned puppy the us right. Not the first puppy They've done it over in europe. And i think asia or something okay. This is the first. us. Laurie what are you working on over there. You know there are some things that we depend on to change our lives and nothing is done that more than the internet but some of these things on the internet of things has really let a lot of lately. And we'll tell you what that is that you might wanna twice about getting. If you're if you have one of those automated houses you definitely coming up and just let first. We visit with america's favorite veterinarian. Of course dr marty becker. How you doing doc. Doing good friend doing good dogs or dogs or Pestered me and a great way today. You know how you sit down and to what them's on one foot trying to get me to rub it with my foot and other ones on the other hand trying to get pet not love our animals and we do some crazy things for animals. One of the things that you wanna do is when you go to the veterinarian. There's so many things that you can do to make it easier. You take the petrified out of what what are you say. Take the pet out of traffic. Check out of petrified as our slogan. And when you really start looking at pets we know what when they're feeling calm. Happy you can think about ways. The are when they get to go for a walk or they get to open up the door. You're sitting down the couch at night. And they're nice and relaxed and just like the two dogs are out my feet. My arms been wanting to have their their bellies rubbed or the next scratched and then we look at the signs of anxiety and fear and stress. You know what happens when they come across an unfamiliar dog on their walk. Or it's first introduction at the dog park or they're gone the guests the best example. You go to the veterinarian and you don't even have to say they know the going to the vat if it's a small dog or cat that you're getting a carrier out or they just got you read and they get in the car and they followed this path and the go up there and there's a lot of things we've learned on creating faire free veterinary visits that that. Wanna tell pet owners about and there's certain things there's certain anxiety and fear triggers that are part of taking a pet to the vet so if you have a a small dog or cat you're gonna use a carrier. Don't get it out the night before or the morning of the procedure. You're guaranteed to have a pet that has incident anxiety that lasts throughout the trip and the visit the ideal thing to do and i practice what i preach here is to have the carrier out all the time. We bought a new carrier. It's more attractive air. What did you see at the airport. You know that we're now they've now they're nice colors. They've got these cool air holes and we call it fun furniture so it's out all the time. It just happens to be their home away from home so they get used to it before they go to the vet so it's not like a symbol of going to the vet or somewhere bad it just like furniture. They see all the time right. Exactly and slots good things happen in there. So you get new toys. You put him in there. You get a tasty kind of new food or treat you give it in there and also if you have small children you let them know listen. That's the place that's off limits. That's their safehouse there where you don't bug them when they're in their house when the little din and then you want to start about a week out if this is a wellness visit. You wanna start a week out with your preparation. So it's going to fall fairmont's in fairmont's you wanna get a recommendation veterinarian of a brand because there's fairmont's that that sound the same look the same. They're not the same. So get a recommendation. Your veterinarian of the fairmont that we know are clinically proven to work. So you start. This magic carpet ride a fair moans. It's literally go from. Had you put in the carrier a towel. And then it goes in your. You have the fairmont's in your car and then going to find it at the clinic. There are some natural chill pills. We call it their nutro-ceuticals they are some are green tea extracts. Some are have things that are from milk as so like when the bitch or the queen nurses puppies or kittens. There's something in the milk that causes into relax and they do that for two reasons. One they don't want them all their klein everybody to death when they're nursing but secondly they want to be able to call them down when predators around so there's some natural products also compression garments like thunder shirts. So if you're gonna do the chill pills you'll start the magic carpet. Fairmont's you start the chill pills a week out and then when it's time to go don't do it with dread do it with either neutral or you're you're happy voice. You're kind of go to the dog park voice and take the vehicle arrived where how hot. It is where you're at right now. It's about ninety five degrees where i'm at today. You don't take a dog from seventy to ninety five. So pre heater pre cool the car to the temperature that they're accustomed to okay and then don't baby talk the pet on the way in so you're going to have this pet hungry. You're gonna withhold food for like the night before like you do for surgery so responsible food awards. Put it behind the back seat on the floor in the very back if you have a little. Suv like us. You want to cover it with the sheet or a small tau to reduce visual stimuli. And the very best thing you can do go on. Itunes download One of the songs throw dogs era. Through a cat's here. This music is actually paste to be at their resting heart rate for dog or cat. And if you do those things bring it in. Hungary start the fairmont's and the chill pills a week out. Don't babytalk at play. The music covered the thing. You're gonna arrive with a pet that's like it's had three glasses of wine and a value. The love going to the vet. Don't want to go to the vet more often. And i gotta tell you that music that you were talking about is also very commun- soothing for humans to you you know what how this is amazing. I practice last thursday and twice. I got you know how you typically go out to the exam room and you walk somebody up to the front counter for them to check out. This never happened before. I walked out and went up to talk to him about a dental supplement. Because most people don't brush your pets. Teas so i used to listen. Here's some enzyme impregnated. Rawhide that i recommend you feed. I turned around in the owner. Wasn't there. I looked looked back and they were trying to drag the dog out of the exam room.

"Dot. That i need dog. That Yeah and the other real common thing. I see cats that sometimes we don't seem till they're older is they can actually a kneecap problems. So they can rupture ligaments in their knee. Like cruciate ligament but they can also have a patellar location and Sometimes as you get older galore or maybe getting excess weight can really kind of make all of those things worse so for for cats. In fact the other day. I just had a cat with Hip displeasure and They were reporting the typical bunny hopping gait so most dogs and cats run right left right left right left and front and back legs go kind of in an order. If we notice that the back legs always moved together as if we're a rabbit. That's an indicator that we could be having hip problems In that's exactly what. The cat i saw was doing was doing this money gate and they just thought it was cute. It was actually a symptom of hip problems. He doesn't see that he walks normal. But worm okay. And so. I mentioned a little bit about weights. That's another huge factor. So if your kid he's a little tubby around. The middle weight loss is actually one of the best things you can do to minimize the need for pain. Relievers giving things. And i think there's a lot of things you know. We talk about natural supplements a lot of things we can give but we have a cat here so we really kind of think reality. How many things are we going to be able to get in your hat wurley. Some cats really amenable to liquids or tablets or some other differently. Powdered glucose means that you can give in food but there there is the point of where we want to have that cat and we still have that bond with a kitty and if they're always getting medications that can really be a downer For both sides of that relationship so I think that's one thing. You gotta look at us. Wow and I would really encourage you to get her. Looked out so that we can get a little bit better agia what we're up against and what our options are. Make sure. we don't need to do something else to address that the other big thing. I do see a lot with hats. Cats in particular that have arthritis problems is they have issues using litterbox. So they don't always like to go to the litterbox because they actually be hurting from their joint problems or arthritis wherever it may be so they actually relate that pain to being the litterbox so we may have a cat that poops near the box Gets the idea but just doesn't spend time covering their waste in the box. They want to get the heck out of there. So that's definitely One other thing history wise. I might ask you to kind of look at it and see. He's doing that either. Seven o'clock good. Well that's good but Yeah i heard you talk to the x ray. And i never thought about him display. Should you should go to the vet and get her checked out you know. Thanks for your call. Here's why would you want to be on a leash. I already know the answer. But just for the heck of it. I asked him to bring your dogs out. Says no of course not. I can't bring them anywhere. I can't control them. They might knock down a kid or an old woman because he doesn't hear what he's saying. I said look. My dog is here with me. I take them lots of places. People don't even notice them. They're happy to see him. Kids can come up and pat him and he's not locked up in the house all alone by himself and the reason for this is because he knows the rules knowing the rules make some common happy he knows what i expect of him and he always gets to come along because of that anyway. "So i. I don't regret it at all so one of the things that i've always found really intriguing about you is that you actually are a graduate of clown. 'cause you're the first ringling brothers clown college graduate. I've ever seen up close coffee. Tell me about clowns squawk clown college I dropped at university of miami Determined to become a stuntman with my with my video camera. didn't really make a lot of progress over those first few years and i was homeless for all of them wound up living with my sister and she was reading a book trivia at work on the toilet. And this this this question. She can't do in a book of trivial she's taking a dump and it says what's What's the only college that has no tuition and the answer was ringling brothers and barnum and bailey clown college is It's free if you can get in but it's a really silly guess. Statistically speaking it's harder to get into. Harvard is what is what i was told so I hitchhiked from albuquerque to denver to audition. There's this crazy audition processor. We had to do stuff like Act as though the left side of our body was a cow lazy cow grazing in field. And but the right side of her body was a wild baboon throwing temper tantrum and and their largely either key. Now go so clearly. What they're trying to do is weed out inhibited individuals. I was not one. And you know i got in and i was really proud of that. What's funny about this. Is that clown college. My cousin was going to mortician school. Mothers were sitting together at the kitchen table. Just cracking up arguing over. Whose son was a bigger loser and people don't know but your father was a big shot. -secutive wasn't you is. I was a corporate I was born in england when i was six months old. My family moved to brazil because dad was He got a job as a president of pepsi cola. Brazil it's my parents were. They were They were not expecting you were they. Not they were living the life and I was essentially raised by by maids in spoke first words in portuguese. Because the live in maids pretty much you know raised me i guess and i i imagine that not getting much attention for my parents at an early age speaks to. Why am the way. I'm today now. What else did you father do. He worked for pepsi venezuela. When i was two we moved to connecticut. When i was four miami when i was six by that point dad was Big tobacco ceo. He learns for r. J. reynolds tobacco. So what was his reaction when he saw his son a shot in the air in a porta potty. I say that my family very early on that whole period. I mean when i when i dropped out of the university miami at nineteen years old. I'm going to be a stunt man. It's going to be great. And then and then like. They didn't even hear from me for months on end. They didn't even know those having the government test drugs on me in some scary drugs to i had the These drugs pigs and cows like pumped into my body like. Why did your mind reminding when you do. Medical studies like this the more dangerous the study the more money you know so i signed up for the most dangerous thing possibly do how you feel in these. I feel great. I i've been clean and sober for over three years now. I quit smuggled cigarettes over not over three years ago August fifth is my my my small brian. How i've been one hundred percent vegan for two years now and look great pictures of you in the In the paper without assured on during the comedy act. Oh you ripped as vita doesn't shirt off during the comedy. Stand up comedy. Do they do and But that's the first part of the show then And then the the second part of the show is is crazy. Stunts and tricks because there to be honest. Even though i've been doing stand up comedy for five years now. I don't know how to let anybody sell tickets to stevo show. If i'm going to stand there and talk the the time. I feel like i would be Gybing people so i do i do. I'm on. I'm setting myself on fire to doing all kinds of crazy. It's how do you cut your hair on fire every day. it's still exist. It looks so good is so dry fired. This is stop doing. I'm doing like a much crazier fire-breathing acrobatics vo bob and sheri. You're listening to the best of bob. And sheri that with the free bob and sheri some things i've found in the owners manual that can deepen and enrich your relationship with kiki not at all. Are you sure. Because i have. I have some really good stuff like on page thirty two. This is about allergies. 'cause you know how you're allergic to kitty and you suffer and it's important to have this warm loving relationship with katie and yet the allergies are between the two of us. It is not important to me. dr Dr marty becker. Who's the author of your cat. Owner's manual says investing. Kitty couture no. I'm not kidding. Dressing your cat and a t shirt sweater or bodysuit helps. Keep your home a for free zone. I'm supposed to dress the cat up. So it doesn't shed like in a little bodysuit. Yeah i think that's insane. That's a really really good idea. Yeah in the in the warmer weather coming up. That's a good idea. Now you know how you enjoy the sunshine. You're always demanding to know where the sun is right and fresh air is good right. Dr marty becker says how about taking your cat outdoors and walking or with a harness. That one person in my life do that and it was so ridiculous looking. Okay dr becker says all right bob. That's not for you. One of my. You don't wanna be walked one of my colleagues a brilliant cap behaviorist tells me her. Cats live for the opportunity to go for a ride in a stroller. Any stroller with zip closed. Seating area makes the perfect place for a cat to safely. See the world while you get in a walk. Have you ever seen a cat who is placed in something by human being in the cat felt comfortable. Whatever you you know you don't know of kiki would enjoy being pushed him just do. You've not tried it. You don't know Bob dr marty becker says one i do is open a dedicated savings account and have your bank deposit money into it to plan for kiki's future healthcare. Needs right here dr randy. Would you like to teach say savings account like a like a health savings account your savings account like to teach kiki a tree trick. I would keep kidding treating diving short and sweet. If the cat isn't having a good time you're not doing it. right sir. Tasty but tiny treats that are easy to swallow. And bob only tricky. When you're in a good mood.
