Soto, Padres beat Atlanta 1-0 to end Braves' win streak at 8
"Nick Martinez drew 7 shutout innings leading the San Diego Padres to a one to nothing win over the Atlanta Braves. Martinez allowed just three hits combining with three San Diego relievers to blank the braves, putting it into Atlanta's 8 game winning streak. Feels good with a team like that. You can't really give them a chance to breathe and I think I feel like I did a good job keeping my foot on the pedal there. Juan Soto solo home run in the fourth inning, his fourth of the year was the only run of the game as the Padres ended their own three game losing streak. Conservative Judges Extend Clerk Boycott to Stanford
"I am continuing my discussion of the controversy at Stanford involving free speech. You remember that this controversy was kindled by a judge, a district judge who came judge Duncan, Kyle Duncan, who came to speak at Stanford and was completely shut down by howling and screaming activists. And administrator was called and who sided with the activists happily that administrator is now placed on leave. The Stanford dean has affirmed Stanford's commitment to free speech, but in a very big but no disciplinary action at all taken against any of the protesters, which gives them the sense of immunity of entitlement of obviously feeling that they can and will do it again. In fact, they sort of did do it again when the dean journey Martinez stopped into her constitutional law class. It was basically a protest in her class horror blackboard was completely covered with activist slogans and paraphernalia. And the students basically said that they were complaining that she was siding with free speech over the over the protesters. Now, in the most recent escalation, a very good escalation, U.S. circuit court judge James hull, Asian American guys, taken the lead. He's followed by another judge, another circuit court judge Elizabeth branch, and he goes, guess what? I'm not going to be hiring any clerks from Stanford law school. Don't even bother to apply. And then judge branch has said, I'm not going to do the same. And there's a whole bunch of other judges who are in sympathy with these guys who haven't made any public announcements, but guess what? They might have decided, I won't say anything, but I'm not going to do that either.

"Okay, so let's take it first. First I want to say that I think what we are witnessing is a sign that Garth loger way is, I don't know if this is like, hey, this has Garth lager was fingerprints all over it. These moose. To me, my personal opinion is more of like Garth where he came in and he's course correcting. You know, he probably came in and looked at what was happening. And listen, Carlos book an eggo told us earlier towards the end of the last season that they were in a bit of a salary cap crunch. He let us know that this was going to happen, essentially. And then you have players like Alan Franco, Mercedes Moreno expensive players that haven't really been excellent for Atlanta United. They become dispensable, and when you're trying to clear up space to rebuild and keep positions like the back line, the number 6, the spine, essentially, and the number 9 position, well, these players are going to have to move on. So for me, it was like Garth lague coming in and seeing the reality of the united in terms of roster building. And before he can really, I think this team can become a Garth lager way sort of team. You have to do make these moves and move people on. And so what does that say about the dynamics with Carlos bodega Garth are always always said that he's going to work with everyone here in Atlanta. And I think it's a bit of a political and diplomatic way of saying it. But we all know that Garth lager way is highly respected perhaps the best GM in the league. Exactly. It's like he knows what he's doing. He knows what he's doing. I expect him to be all over this all over the front office all over the moves. The roster moves. And eventually really implanting what he believes that led united can be on the field and off the field as well. But I don't think this is the off season where we're going to see all that come to fruition. We're seeing what needs to happen in order to take that next step. Joseph Martinez part of that always headlines in Atlanta always something talk about with Felipe carnes of the athletic. Felipe, you're on a break, you're hanging out. You're not in sweatpants, get out of the house, go do something, have a coffee man. We appreciate your time. Always guys, take care see you soon. "And again, I think the full story is still yet to be told, but it's not a good situation between these two. And if that is not resolved and the official thank you tweet is not sent out by the time we are in front of Gonzalez, that's going to be top of mind for a lot of people. Yeah, and the Miami side of this, I believe if pizarro wasn't around, again, this is more of my own deduction rather than my own reporting. I believe that this would have been much closer to being done because Miami can't have Joseph and bizarro. Like they need to figure out the same way that Atlanta are trying to figure out another home for Joseph. Miami are trying to figure it out with bizarre. So I'm very curious to see how that unfolds. There's so many moving parts to this because of that. It's like a little bit of bad musical chairs to figure out who goes where. But like you said with the deadlines, roster compliance date is the night before batch day one. So that's February 24th that Friday, whatever the Friday is before the match we get 5 p.m. is when you have to be relatively compliant. That day is when LA galaxy bought out DO dos Santos a few years ago. So that's kind of the deadline, but like you said, Felipe, in reality, everybody wants us to be resolved this was possible. Judeo Santos day, that's what we're going to call roster deadline day from now on. And it's February 24th at 5 p.m. as we sort of think to the future Felipe and this is such an interesting conversation because, you know, Joseph Martinez has been the present and the future for this club for so long, but it's increasingly clear he is not either of those things unless unless people get forced to the table and they got to deal with it. What would the number 9 what a marquee signing look like for Atlanta United? Who would they try to go get? What is that profile? What is that spend? It's a great question. I think as long as Joseph Martinez is in Atlanta and is in the facility, he's very much the president. He's very much part of the history of this club. He's the alpha male in Atlanta United.

"They were very adamant about refreshing the center forward position. And essentially ending Joseph Martinez is his campaign, his reign, his everything you want to throw at it here in Atlanta. This season. So that was October, the World Cup goes through, now we're back here and it's like, yes, with what time reported I was able to confirm it as well. There are talks. There's interest with the inter Miami. I think what changes, though, is that he's like, who has leverage here? I think that's the big question. You know, Joseph Martinez, I think what he wants probably is to go the option B or maybe that's C where he's bought out. His contract is bought out. He becomes a free agent and he can choose the best landing spot for himself. At lany united, I think a trade for a player, it's got to be one of the top players in the league. I was hearing last week that rodolfo pizarro a swap for piso Joseph Martinez was in the works or was at least discussed. I don't think outlining I would take that trade. I think it's not equal there. And so for Milan and I's perspective, if they already communicated to Joseph Martinez that we won't be, you won't be part of the plans in 2023. I have confirmed sources saying that they are shopping for a center forward. My gut tells me that lane knight is going to say, you know, we want that DP spot. We want to free it up in the best way possible for them, but essentially just to have an open DP spot so they can go refresh that number 9 position. Yeah, so Felipe, when you talk about leverage, for me, it's probably Joseph and Miami. So Miami are very interested.

Number four, you have the Houston dynamo, and we had Houston arrow hit us up and said, hey, the dynamo have been busy guys, lots of them lost vets with winning pedigrees, Escobar, which is not official yet, but seems like it's going to happen. Brad Smith, our tour. Ivan Franco came in, what a, I mean, what a main he has. We're talking mustaches. This man's curls are like, oh my God, top level. The humidity in Houston is not going to be able to touch those curls. He's an incredible, incredible looking man. And then obviously, you know, more to come from the Houston dynamo, they think. Maybe a number ten slash winger, Tam guy, they're looking around, trying to improve their attacking option. What do you think of Houston's off season so far? Yeah, look, so first things first, they inherited a pretty difficult situation pat on set and the new front office only took over last year. They didn't have the opportunity to really get overturned the roster and give themselves a chance of bringing a lot more players. They brought in some imagine Frey brought in Hector Herrera, but it was still a lot of holdover from the Roswell fort. That's not the case. They moved on from 12 players and a lot of which were significant kind of cap ruser but there's a couple of you 22 initiative players. There were a couple of high contracts like dollar Quintero and homegrown memorial reggae. They cleared out a whole lot of room and what they've done so if I really like the Ivan Franco signing, I know that he hasn't lit it up over the last year or two. But two or three years ago, I was told with confidence that an MLS team asked how much would he cost a few years ago, like $7 million was a quote. So this is a player who they're rolling on his on his talent. Again, it hasn't been great over the last few years. He's very close to what Sebastian Ferreira, I don't know. I really like that signing. I think it's a high upside signing. Let's see what a midfield tree of art or Hector Herrera and coco caskey can do those three good players. Again, we'd be like you said they're looking to add another kind of difference making attacker.

"So regarding these requirements and we have those that distribute specifically understand how to work with families outside our state of California and focus on the different areas that they need to go ahead and help prepare themselves because like I mentioned, maybe your audience doesn't live in California. Your audience is on different locations in the U.S.. Some of these states don't require the same requirements as California does. And so some of the students would not be aware of those requirements. We take that into consideration. So we look at those items and we understand what state they're coming from and we try to help prepare them to meet all the requirements as easily as possible and ensure that they meet everything. And if it's something that we can quickly suggest, we encourage that. And many of our C issues also have other departments just like mine that have a specific branch focused on supporting students that want to look at our admissions process and can actually sit with the counselor or do a group presentation a better understand and ask questions to help them meet these requirements because they seem simplistic, but they sometimes get a little bit more complicated when now you start looking at your situation. And there's people here in this issue system in all 23 to help those students and families really understand those requirements. And I think that's the critical piece we walk away from not worried about what the requirements are because they're unique slightly within each campus, even though they're based in the same foundation, but really where do I get the support? How do I go get the answers to my questions and how do they help me go ahead and process these items every step of the way. And every student that we get, we walk through what we call the funnel in admissions. It's a funnel. They go from one stage to the next stage to the next stage. And as they go through it, they have new things that they have to either accomplish or do. You know, when you first submit an application, you've got to send in some documents for us to verify. As you go through that next stage, there is a stage of, okay, now I've been offered admission. I need to go ahead and actually get some other things done like get my scholarship application, get my other items in as far as any missing item that I need to finish any requirement for tuition. Any residency documents, anything like that. And so for each phase, these individuals that I talked about are present in each of our campus to help kind of migrate themselves through each of these phases and get to the point where when May comes around its decision time and they have to pick that one campus and if they selected us, they had they basically would have completed everything that they needed to do to prepare for themselves for registering for courses in the summer for the coming terms that they're coming into. Or if they're in spring, doing it in January. So the biggest pointer, like I said, that I would walk away from not really worried about the requirements. Really worried about making sure you get in front of people that can answer your questions. And that's the admissions counselors or the outreach teams that are available at each of our campuses. And that's great. And to speak to your point about my listeners, I think, for the show, I'm hoping that with a big draw like Pedro Martinez on the docket that I draw some California listeners, right? That's what we hope..

And unfortunately, many of those brave may have fallen off. Or forgot that they have to pay to the ear and strength to take this position that you've taken. Yeah. Do what's right at all costs? What does that mean? Nancy at all costs. At the cost of your livelihood, your well-being. You know? Yeah. You're willing to risk everything. Because you got to stand for something. You know that saying stand for something or fall for everything? Yeah. Yeah. I'm not for anything else ever again. I'm not. I've fallen for enough. That's it. That's it. I'm nobody's fault. It's too much. It's too far. It's gone too far. It's gone too far. We have let it go too far. We have gotten so involved in our own lives. We have not stopped to take a look around at what's happening around us. We have not stopped to take a look at what's happening in our own communities. And now inside of us, if it's not inside of us. Yeah. It's not a synthetic. Yes. That's protein that is now changing the DNA inside of us. Yeah, inside of our children. But we're not taking the time to realize that. Yeah. And hey, I don't have any children, but I'll stand up and fight for your children any day. Any day. You know why? Because who else do they have to fight for them? So I'd rather be the one fighting for them instead of harming them. I will never harm a child. I would rather not come across someone who will harm your child. Because it won't be good for them. That's my stance on me. So let's leave, let's leave listeners, Nancy. With some closing comments from closing. Floating closing thoughts. I mean, they're listening, right? You're listening to a woman that faithfully served her country. These are the people that you're the people Nancy, frankly that people like me take for granted as we lay our head on our pillow each night and, you know, we know we have disruption in the country. We all know that. But still, it is still the safest country on the planet. In large part because of people that are trained like you to defend it. But unfortunately, you're defending a not necessarily constitution in the country, you've defended banking corruption that's manipulated the maneuvers and the wars of the country. Nonetheless. Yeah. We're having to defend against the rampant corruption and the deceit. From our own government, that's been going on for way too long. 1913, if you do go back to the Federal Reserve, right? Exactly. Exactly. And some of these European powers and they've been around much longer in the United States and they're still powers. They're still forces to be reckoned with. Yes. Yes. So a stealth enemy may not be that stealth if we follow the money. Exactly. They're not that stuff that you follow the money. You know, we're wearing clothing that's likely been made in China. They've allowed that to happen. Exactly. Yes. Yes. We've allowed it to get so entrenched in every single aspect of our lives. That if I don't want to be funding them, I basically have to go live in the mountains and live off the land. And forage for everything, you know? Yeah. 'cause you can't really trust anything. Food like agriculture of everything, everything. So, yeah. So what do you leave? What do you leave for less than your listeners? What do you want them to walk away with? I don't want. What's the message? Stop being silent. Okay. Stop keeping your opinions to yourself. Speak out. Let your voice be heard. Okay. Because there are more of us than there are of them. We are the majority. And for some reason, these freaking oligarchs think that they're going to preside over us and tell us what to do dictate what we do. Dictate what we put in our bodies. What we purchase, what we eat, and no. No. That needs to stop. You need to strap on your freaking, you know, boots and big girl, big boy pants on, and shot it from the mountaintops. We're not gonna let this happen anymore. 'cause our country is slipping away from us. Right from the grass of our little fingertips. That freedom that we love to say so much oh yeah, freedom, you know, we're free. Yeah, that's being ripped away from you. And this is how it starts. When they slap a mask on your face, they slap a mask on your child. They hit you with a needle. They hit your kid with a needle, and they say, no, you're gonna keep on getting this needle. Just because. That's the life you want to live, then maybe you should move out to one of these countries where they like that stuff to go on on a daily basis, but not here. I didn't give 20 some years of my life that. So speak up, say something, stop being a coward. It's definitely other people come to the fight because you all need to fight. Yeah. Like I said, you don't need to have served to be a patriot. If you love this country, you loved what this country stands for, then you need to stand up for it and fight for it. Say something. You know? That's it. Okay. Nancy Martin, thank you very much. Thank you, sir..

"It. You know? I think I said I like to be able to do things that means something. And this means something to me. So, let's say. Whether it's through the discharge or look, maybe something steps in and you continue your employment. But let's take this, let's take the road of. You disconnect your association no longer working, whatever that end means. What's next for you? You start, you start over, you find employment, you take care of yourself, but your voice, your voice continues, and your stance continues. Yeah, yeah. And you sacrifice a couple decades worth of experience in loyalty, trust me, I'm gonna be pissed off for years to come. So somebody's gonna hear my mouth. I don't know in what aspect, but yeah. We'll see, we'll see what the future holds. Because I don't even know right now. And you feel alone. You don't feel like you have any allies in this. I haven't even been able to find a lawyer. Like honestly, I'm not made of money either. So I don't know how I'm going to fight this, but I am. It's just right now I'm just taking it one day at a time, you know? Hopefully I'll be able to find some representation and somebody that will be able to articulate my stance adequately and professionally. If you leave it up to me, I'm gonna throw out a couple of F bombs and 12 in a day. Honestly, I'm so angry right now. It takes everything in me to control my emotions each and every day. Each and every day, actually trying to get a little bit more quality and charge that was and I mean, I'm not one to hide how I feel. I wear my emotions on my sleep. You know, and so it takes a lot lately. I'm on the brink of tears every day, you know? And.

"Nancy, daresay. There's a Florida represented. I joined my show about 6 7 weeks ago. His name is sabatini. Anthony sabatini. I've heard of him. I asked him this question. He's 33. Educated the university of Florida law school. He's a great guy. Similar to you. He's a patriot. I don't know if it's, I don't know if you did military and I don't know, but he's a page. You don't have to be a patron. Yeah. Not in my book anyways. So a lot of people say, follow the money. Yes. And you follow the money. I mean, you're throwing thrown off the profits that yes. Advisers me. So if I ask you this question, I want to get your response. And I'm going to leave the institution blank. So when I asked him, I said, what do you think of this institution? He said it's unconstitutional and needs to be repealed. So I'm going to ask you, what are your thoughts on this institution? This is the institution. If you follow the money, you arrive to something. In the United States, it's called the Federal Reserve Central Bank. That was the beginning of the end. They were in the beginning of our they need to be completely dissolved. We need to take back our own currency. I mean, why do we need to depend on a there's nothing federal about them? How do you know that? There's nothing reserved. The gold? No. Well, there's no gold standard in that. They are a private entity. There's no way. Is it possible is it possible that the shareholders of that institution could be costly manipulating? Absolutely. They're manipulating the market. In general, which could also include the profits for the pharmaceutical companies with federal government protect. Don't you know, I remember again you have to look this up yourself 'cause I can't even remember where I heard it. But the U.S. government shares the patents to some of the COVID-19 vaccines. So they're also profiting from these excellence. So yeah. Yeah, we're talking about the Federal Reserve. All those it just needs to abolish. I mean, the corruption that's running inside the fed. It's mind-blowing and how people don't see it is beyond me. Do you have peers? People that you know that know what you know and understand what you know. Some, yes, but they're not as outspoken as I am. Everyone chooses to keep their opinions to themselves and which honestly I think is the worst thing you can do at this point. With silence. Right now. Exactly. And they're allowing themselves to remain silent. Yes. For fear of size. Yeah, for fear of what I'm going through right now. Yeah, because they don't, nobody wants to stand up and do something about what's going on until it comes out and affects them directly. I've been pissed off about this since the start of the 2020. You know, I mean, no, I didn't think I was gonna end up in this boat, but that was me being naive still, I guess. Me still not wanting to see that the country that I loved and given so much in my life for as turned around and basically spit in my face. You know? But hey. This is where I'm at. And so no, I'm not going to stay silent. I'm not going to stay silent. I'm not going to take it lying down. I don't know if it's the Latina in me or I don't know if it's the New York and me, but I'm just not going to take this line down. I can't. If anyone,.

Dose of Leadership

"Now, this whole conversation I believe encompasses that concept of rebirth because the reason I named it that is because all of us are experiencing rebirths, all of us that's the reinvention that's the new identities that's imagine a new possibilities. All of us are experiencing reverse over the course of our lives. And some more drastic and dramatic and than others, but nonetheless, there's still rebirth. And so for me, what's fascinating is, you know, for example, like I could think of somebody at the top of my head that I was just recently quoting Charlie plum. He was a POW in Vietnam. I was just looking at this and I was like, he was on my show years ago. God, what an amazing man. Dude, I love that dude. And so much respect for him, but, you know, it's easy to look at his bio and focus on he was a POW for 6 years and you're like, that's the thing you heart heart upon, right? And that's the thing you go to like, oh my God. But then what I want to do is, okay, let's find out. Let's find out about the journey. Let's find out about those small things. Those moments that helped you be now a survivor of being a POW. And one of the critical things that he said, there's two things. They're really sick with me and I really think about almost on a daily basis. One is that another POW said this to him when he arrived at his prison camp. Acid does more harm in the vessel where it stored than on the subject where it's poured. Wow, that's so brilliant. That's so poetic. Yeah. And like he says, he used the word, you know, the interpretation. There's all this vitriol. That's the word he used. Vitriol inside of him towards the mechanics that worked on his plane because he too was a pilot. There's all this vitriol towards the people that captured him that were torturing him. There was all this vitriol towards everybody, right? Because in that moment, look what he's going through. But he realized because someone said it, it's going to do him more harm to keep that asset inside of him. And that's something that all of us, the next thing he said that is so important, adversity is a horrible thing to waste. Yeah. And so for me, the rebirth podcast, man, it's an opportunity to be like, okay, cool. We see the shiny cool thing up there. Let's pull it back. Let's expose other parts of this and let's find out other things that apply to all of us. Because how many of us are going to be POWs? Well, in the sense that we're Charlie plum is a POW. We won't experience that. But many of us are prisoners of war of our own thoughts and our own world and our own choices and our lack of this. And our lack of that. Well, that's what's so the interesting to talk to people like that because you're in that camp too because he's like, well, I can't relate to what happened to JR. I can't Charlie plum. Well, you can. That they experienced life in the ultimate extremes. Right. And combat brings that out in people. Inexperience is not inadvertently mostly inadvertently because you're in the situation because a combat scenario or whatever the case may be. You can't get more extreme in life than that. And so that's where you see the extremes of depravity, but also love. And I had a guy on my show, became friends with. He was an Iwo Jima vet. He passed away a few years ago and one real day, but his story is amazing and almost burial. But lied to get in the Marine Corps when he was 16 and did all this shit from 16 to 18 that you and I, my biggest, I always say this that my biggest stress at 18 was trying to buy beer with a fake ID. And he stormed his storm in the sands of you with Jima for Christ's sakes, you know? I mean, good lord. He was sick in the hospital. He was, you know, he was just visiting house, when I went down to visit him with my tool or daughters. This was about a year before he died. He was telling those stories again he's there with his wife and I ask him I said, man, I love hearing those stories. They're amazing. You know, what's your biggest takeaway? You know, I never ask you, seeing all that stuff. And those crazy stories, all the death, the destruction that living through these miraculous stories and I said, what's your biggest takeaway? He didn't even hesitate. He didn't go, um, he just answered like right where he goes. I learned how to love another human being deeply. And I was like, oh, and it almost. Dude, I almost like, it took someone like hit my heart, you know? And I was like, started tearing up and his wife started crying because it's true. He loves deep, because I learned how to love very deep. And he told a story about he told he had a friend that was on the evil with him and he was still alive at the time. He said he never, he never let it go. He let that asset in your vessel, like you said, he just, to this dying days, like, those goddamn blah, blah, and you know, and won't buy a Japanese car and all this, and he's just like, you know, and he says, I chose to let love come in and he just learned how to love life and not that he didn't, you know, you know, he still had that nightmares and all that stuff all the time. But I was just like, gosh, dang, isn't that what it's all, you know what I mean? And he saw stuff that you and I, you know, even put your experiences to shame. You know, nothing to take away from yours. But he saw absolutely. You know, absolutely. But that's the lesson for all of us, man. That's the lesson. I think if we can just learn to just love deeply and just be reminded that at the end of the day, you know, I know, for example, for you, 9 11, you know, when you started yeah, I just lost a job. I just lost a job. You know, it wasn't like my point is like, and 9 11 though, you saw something happen, you saw loss, but then you saw life again, right? In the mix of people coming together. And saying what we have in front of us, we're going to nurture and take care of and we're going to be there for each other. And I think that we just have to be willing to listen to each other, have conversations and just lead from that place of loving deeply and just say, there's a lot of loss that we've experienced over the last couple years. But there's also a lot of love that we're going to gain. Let's get to work. Amen. That's a good place to stop. I couldn't say it any better. JR, you're awesome, man. I love the fact that we did this and talked looking at the cloud. Yes. Thank you for reaching out. It's always great to chat with you and just kind of go to that place and thank you for the I mean, honestly, for me for the reset for just get a little get the juices flowing again. Amen, brother. And really appreciate it, man. And hey, I'm in Austin. I am whenever you're ready. We'll do it. Rebirth podcast. How are Martinez dot com? I have links to this. What a house can people find you, man? "Which is the virtual the online platform that you've always had but tell me about the shift during the pandemic. How much more was that in use. And you know you say that people really learned this amazing amount of You're really by got comfortable. I guess with technology and so more people were willing to go online. But what was your experience travel manager as much as went virtual during that time. Why in the virtual space. We had a core group of customers that utilize that platform both for Data collection and for A face to face interviews not in person of course but virtual that business rocketed Presumably their customers Either wanted to collect as much information in as short a time as possible or they just increased their budget because the business just went crazy on top of that we had customers who were dabbling a little bit in virtual but primarily face to face started moving more and more of their research into a virtual space and then we had customers who had completely sworn off online research and they lay or later in the game. Closer to the end of two thousand twenty really started ramping up their operations to be more supportive of of virtual. I think it. I think the pandemic lasting as long as it has has provided opportunities to grow and to learn to understand But it's also put people in a place where they're coming up kind of in a fight or flight situation When you're faced with this will survive. You are often choosing. What is familiar. And i think that's what has been such a powerful resource for fieldworkers that we've been doing online research for fifteen plus years so inclines came to us to say. Hey we've gotta find a way to get this done. We had an answer right there. and In thinking about how we ramped up support that the funny part about it is. We were pretty scalable already..

So i have with me a great friend anna colleague. But i want to put great friend. I so you're gonna love him. It's carlos martinez. He is the epa. Over everything of technology at fieldwork. Welcome to ponderings from perch carlos. Thank you so much. I really appreciate being here and being invited on the show and i just wanna say. I'm honored to be considered a friend and colleague. You also get other points. Because they're really like your wife pretty high marks marks so which is kind of a fun fact about you. Is that you and your wife crystal both worked for field work. And i think that's something that's very interesting about the ethos that field work. You all have so many employees who have been there forever and that would include you and your wife. This is true we used to be the youngest whatever the youngest here the youngest there and now no one ever references young. We are unfortunately. Oh well that went by the wayside. It's okay there better. Things are better things. I will say a couple of things about carlos that i really know he. Is this very motivated. Very curious Learner and i love that because you know we'll end up in a conversation but yeah but how does that work. How does this where how are we going to get that together. But he is always building. Networks apps teams and really seeing the technology that is needed for the daily operations of fieldwork. Which let me tell. You is a lot of technology when you think about the amount of people. They are recruiting for in person research. I mean the database alone is so massive and so i appreciate how much you are always trying to keep your finger on the pulse of what's going on in technology.

"Or anywhere near anywhere that i know that is so important to have an inclusive respectful workplace. Pete wells just had this huge Article come out recently in the last few weeks about celebrity chefs having the bad behavior. The old chef mentality. And i can't tell you how many people that were responding that article saying now there is better now. This is definitely the chef of the past. The new shots are not like that this is. This is a new era of people that they're respectful. No one needs to yell and throw things and screen. You can be just as effective as saying. This is what i expect. These are my standards and we will move forward or otherwise. We will not move forward together. You end up to doing it to you. They're probably doing it to other people. Not saying they're just perpetuates it and we need to get rid of those people so do say something. It's important to try to fit in embarrassing saying they say somebody supervisor say something to human resources and you stop that right away. Good point so what do you think is the biggest factor for your success. I think i'll use persistence. I feel like that's a positive way of saying that i'm annoying but persistent is into such a key thing. I will never stop bothering people if it's something that i want. If it's great for the company. I worked so hard towards these things you know having the ability to just kind of perseverance and push through and just keep opening the doors for yourself. That will get you everywhere you know. There's many things going on in a restaurant is the Working is the ice machine producing enough ice to the On time the delivery com. Did you order last night. All these things are happening on crazy basis and sometimes managers are not able to step back and say hey. Is this something that i need more of. I mean literally my my first actual practice of inventory was need bothering my. My kitchen manager of outback steakhouse thing. Can i help you with inventory. Can i help you with inventory. You want me to count that for you. You me to go into the freezer because no one likes going in the freezer. If you've ever worked in the industry the freezer is a bad bad place that no one ever wants to be end because it's freezing and everything's like frozen to everything and you have literally move everything to make the accounts for the inventory. The ability to do inventory by guesstimates when it's in the freezer again. That's five boxes. let's go. I'm so happy that we all we use our freezer for impossible. Meet otherwise i would hate it too but i mean i think it's so funny to me that people hate using the freezer Alter the freezer. I have no problem with that. And only if you teach me how to do women's story so literally. I have no issue going above and beyond so that i learned that piece of knowledge. And then we'll von music for the greater good and if you're persistent with a smile it's not annoying now. It took me a few weeks to let him to finally allow like led him. Let me do the ambulatory or to help him. Literally count like. Oh how many oranges we have like. I have done that for you weeks ago. Like what were you thinking along to teach me that but you just were persistent. So let's flip that. What was the biggest mistake you've ever made. And what did you learn from that. So when i was a the first time general manager they said i learned a lot. I ended up being in a less than ideal relationship or from one of the time. They were really bringing me down personally which ended up bringing me down and fight of work. And it's kind of one of the biggest mistakes or failures that i personally feel that i was not able to showcase my one hundred percent when i was working for that person and i look back at the time and i said i'll while i was just dealing with so much i was sober work. That was working like eighty hours a week. It was it was so crazy. I wake up. Go to work by the time. I got out of work. It was closed clothing time out by eleven or twelve. And i go to and come back and it was like literally i was the only manager so i'm sure i was the restaurant manager and i was the only one there to oversee the property so for me. I didn't take care of myself. I and when. I didn't take care of myself. I got burned out and affected my were infected everything around me and that's my own personal failure. I wanted to make sure everyone else was okay. But i wasn't okay but they airlines put on your safety masks first before you help other people because can't help other people without helping yourself i. Yeah that's so true because the past it was always. Let's conserve hours. Let's be crazy and really in the long run. You do a nobody service with that because you know you ended up breaking down yourself so this is seen a change in the industry as well. It's more about self care and take care of yourself and don't work these crazy hours and that when you are working it makes you a better manager a better cook a better server when you have that time to self care. My managers do not work over a certain our ever. I don't do it to them. And if i wouldn't do it for Like if i don't do myself. I will never ask someone else to do it for me. It's so so we still have a long way to go when it comes to self hair in industry the people that know that people tend to turn to drinking or drug when they are not able to seek care of themselves and you know even still in the last few years. We've had a lot of chefs that have you know turned down dark paths. Because they weren't able to take care of themselves and that's something that i work on every day so i'm not saying that i sit down and like bodies once a month is that it's really not how it is but it's like hey if i need to go to the doctor's appointment i'm going to the doctor's appointment if i need to take time. I have an hour and a half between the time that i let my husband offer work for the day to the time that i have to walk into the store. That is my time. So having that use of my time and therefore i'm giving that piece to my managers and their farm. Giving that police to my staff creates a better better community. you know. i'll i try best never to call it my managers on the absolutely hot summer days off. I don't do it. And i think that i think they appreciate it. Have i know that. I would really appreciate it when i was. You know in that position and something that you know. If i have to ask for something later on down the road maybe there are a little bit more willing to help me out when we had the tough situation than if i were to the mean and bearing and make them work sixty seventy hours a week. It's that's not how it is we are we are team and ultimately i can't.

"You when we. Why don't you tell us about that. Because i know you've left the back of the house at some point and you move more to the front of the house. Sorta kinda general manager overseeing that marketing so maybe that some listeners out data better in culinary school thinking about. But i don't wanna spend all my time in back of the house or being the chef. Where else can i go with this child on your story may inspire them absolutely one thing that i actually love most about my personal experiences that i did go to culinary school. I learned savory side of culinary. I think that that is huge in my repertoire. Anyone looks at my resume and say say wow. She's done at all and actually backup houses. Weirdly enough the hardest things to kind of get into when you are working in the industry a lot of people go to the front of house route very easy talk have have them have a great time but actually learning backup. How stakes time dedication. It took me many years to move out when it was also many years that i actually now appreciate so much because i have that under my belt when i need to talk to the cook's needs to interact with our chef. Anything that i do. I know that i can do it just as good as them. And it actually shows that. I'm a responsible leader. That i'm able to be respected because i walked in the line and i can do everything that they're doing and sometimes better but what's important for me but what's important for me is that i didn't wanna just need stuck in the back of the kitchen i remember. I was working for jeffrey for carry on one of the iron chefs He's pretty well known in your. He was james beard. Finalists done at all. But i was working for him. And i remember doing like new year's eve party. It was three hundred people. And i'm just putting out playful plates of the same thing and i said this is what i wanna do. I find no satisfaction and putting out the same play. Three hundred times ever someone telling me that one plate was maybe not to their liking. Or you know it just doesn't give you instant gratification. So for me. It was like okay. I love this but this is like not exactly if for me. So i started exploring other ways around it at the time i ended up going in helping my friends chefs. Erickson who had haven at the time and now has wallace which is in south. Korea started helping him in the kitchen. I said i'll come and help you out for a little bit. They ended up meeting someone to help with their social media. So i ended up just doing it. Because i had at the time my own blog was about Mea the cook working in the industry in miami and what i learned along the way saw zhang all these different people. I you know stashing. I can't say enough about yes if you have the opportunity and the ability to work For little or no cost just for gaining of knowledge it is so important. I worked for the first pop up in miami that way i worked for an amazing shots right after that i worked for like i said blackberry farm under joseph lynn who has an exceptional shock all that was because i sat there a job. I'll do anything. I wanna learn. And that's very important to learn different styles of cooking and you start to learn about different types of areas in the kitchen and beyond will. Maybe you could explain to the listeners. What is the star because they may not know and how best to get. What did you do to make sure that you were picked. Chosen assange is considered a trial or a trailer they liked to call it whereas essentially you go and you work in a kitchen for what could be an hour. A few hours a half a day of full day. Some people do it for months and basically that's learning about the restaurant. They're learning about youth and people will actually do it as a form of the job interview to see if you have the skills they require with that you gain knowledge of the restaurant. You work under an amazing shop. You can sit under your resume and you're actually. You're helping them in. They're helping you. So that's what astonishes primarily could work for free go to a restaurant saying i'm willing to work for free for a week help our wherever you ne- but at the same time i'm going to get a behind the scenes. Look maybe you know. Pick up some skills learned some things too. So it's a win win. I really walk-ups staff and i say. Let me help you choose any day. Anytime i won't be about thirteen. You heal potatoes. Just give me an opportunity to help you out of what he did. That's what i did for blackberry farm. I went for dinner for my birthday. My parents live in tennessee. Now i went to visit them and they said this is the place. If if you're gonna have your birthday dinner is the place to go. We go. And i look and i said well. Let's places amazing. They like have their own truffles and dogs. I go get their truffles and may have A greenhouse that has all of their release. And i said this is. I want to work here and so i actually ended up knowing that i was going there for my birthday so i literally brought up my knife role which is like the bag with all of your knives and i literally brought it with me and i thought i was going to get stopped by. Tsa brought my knife role. And i literally said this is going to happen whether we like it or not and i actually during the birthday dinner i saw the shop jets finding my walked up to him and i said i would love. I have two more days here. These give me an opportunity. I brought everything with me. You don't even have to ask her anything. I will do whatever it takes. The field work the damage she goes. How about tomorrow. And i said tomorrow so i literally went the next day. And you'll see all these amazing restaurants that do you think of that. You're like oh this is the unattainable but why not local say now and then you go on and you try someone else so it was so cool to me because i actually we were out of. Let's say spinach or something. And i said oh. Did you guys order to spinach. And she goes no come with me and we literally got in a golf cart and drove out a mile and pick the spinach out of the ground and brought it back for the. Yeah so you can't get much better than that people don't realize we're in the hospitality business so when you go to a shafie you're going to approach someone or general manager the owner. We're in the hospitality because we want to help those. That are coming behind us. That are just getting into this. Career are interested in what we're doing we wanna share we want to be about. That is a great great way to do that. You don't have to be fearful as you mentioned worst-case they say no you try another place absolutely and seriously please. Email me ask me questions. I love teaching people. It is one of my passions is to actually train. My staff teach other people about the industry. I seriously love it. Because i wasn't always given that opportunity and i had to kind of bus through the doors and not at the end of the day. I am a woman in the industry and which is foreign view. And i've i've been able to push my way up to the top echelon of upper management which is super not easy. I will tell you that especially in a male dominated world but you can do it without having to go through all the rigmarole. There's definitely people out there that are willing to help. And and make your experience what it needs to be in order to get our industry like a front and that's a great offer because it's been a thread that's kind of you know all throughout this podcast. Every guest i have on is always offering themselves help mentorship to any of the listeners. Out there so is there a way that they can contact user is some type of social media where they can get in touch with you. Yeah absolutely so. My instagram handle is christine m underscore. "I would now like to introduce today's guest chef christine guzman martinez christina. Welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. Oh sorry did. I say christina. Is it christine. it's okay. We're in miami this. I get that all the time to say. I can say christine anything. After chris i basically answered so it doesn't bother me at all. Don't worry you go okay. Perfect would like to start off by asking how you found culinary arts you know. How did you get into this crib. Because see from your bio that you. I started out in business school so where along that path. Did you have that revelation. Was it in school was before you were in school that you decided to make the switch to culinary in culinary school so i always wanted to father while my father who was in business. He was working Her sprint at the time he was one of their executives and i thought it was so cool that you know making all these business moves and i went to fau for about a year. And a half. I started my undergraduate. And i absolutely hated it. I used to be very very good. School is very easy. And then. When i went into. Fau it was the passing the ship in the night I had a really tough time. Just kind of learning to cope with this huge school. Where i came from a small private school in miami so i had a small fish in two big ponds and it was. It was a lot for me. And i decided that this is just not for me. I don't believe That schooling for business is really something that you need to have business to me is a thing that you just. Have you know how to interact with people how to negotiate. Things are just things that kind of either know or don't know how to do along those lines. I stopped going to you. I was like what am i gonna do with my life and my grandmother who was a huge influence on me sets new. One day she goes. I wish if i had any dream you know. I didn't have all these resources back. Then but one of the things i love that you know cooking just brings people together and it brings so much happiness in you know. You've seen everybody in our family how much we love food and how much it's it's such a pool together. A families and i started looking up culinary school's obviously there's plenty to choose from when i was going to swell i that parents leave. Go to school or need help. I really wanna go to johnson and wales she. My mother said to me. We've already tried this once. I don't know if we do. I see that the actual average salary for It's really low. Are you sure this is really what you want. And i said yes please than what i wanna do. The she told me only on one condition you go and get a job in the industry and working as a cook for a year. And if you do that then we will help you and support you into going into winners from there. I had like fifty applications. That i tried so hard to get into you know knocked on everyone's door and it's just like girl with no experience trying to get a job in a kitchen and people are like yeah right. I'm not gonna give her an opportunity. I ended up going to an outback steakhouse randomly one day and i had an f. i. You shirt on and the proprietor. There told me. Hey since you haven't shared on that was my alma mater. I'll give you a shot. And i literally told him. I said i'll i'll pay you. I'll do whatever. I'll cook clean dishes like just give me an opportunity and i actually so appreciate his willingness to kind of give this girl shot because you know now. He's a partner for bully which is a a really popular restaurant. Chain down here. And i clawed the luca i give you all of the props in the world because you gave me my first start into culinary world thumb was really might start of my my passwords going to culinary school. So that's great so you think they let you into The outback or they hired you because of the shirt then it wasn't because of your resume spirit analogy one thousand percent and i said we've all i'll do anything i will like. I said i'll clean dishes. And they just gave me the opportunity. And i started as a as a prep cook for them. Working super early warnings cleaning shrimp Cleaning salad making the baked potatoes making the famous ranch sauce that everyone knows about so. It was a different labor of love and back. Then i don't know how back is now. But they made everything in house crew time salad dressings. We cut the actual meat ourselves. It was really labor intensive. And i actually learned an incredible amount about that situation. You know use later on in my life so that was enough to convince the parents to let you go to culinary school right. It was like okay. She's proven concept here. She's she's dedicated. We're going to let you go. So how did you pick. Johnson and wales in miami location. You're already in. Miami is close you or did you look at other schools. Yes the six months later. I finally said listen like back what i wanna do. I had gotten on the lineup point. I was working on garmon shea and the fry station. I think i was learning how to compensate for the time and i said mom. I know this is what i want. I love this industry. And i started looking for locations down in miami because obviously cia at the time was like but place to be but it was. It was very expensive. It was something that. I didn't know if i wanted to take that risk of moving up to new york. I think i had a boyfriend at the time or something like. Let's stay put in miami. So between that you had a johnson wales and you had the cord on blue. I ended up choosing johnson. And wales. Because i felt like they had a better reputation at the time. Being miami girl hyde park new york might have been a little cold in the winter Our little chilly so you started. What was your thinking your their first day. You're you're showing up. What what's the process like tae. Tell the listeners. What happens. I guess they give you your equipment. They give you have your schedule. You're going off to labs Everybody's probably excited nervous. What we should i laugh. Tell us about day one right. I think either the day before the day of came up your knives. You got your big thick book of all the foundational recipes. And what have you there I picked up everything. They gave us a uniform. They get. I mean so many things. I'm used to private school where you hop wear a you know a press shirt and shorts and do the whole thing. This was on a whole 'nother level. You have the pants and the shoes and socks a certain way and your little handkerchief or whatever the way and you need to have a little piece that goes on the handkerchief a certain way and you have the hat and everything needs to be pressed and do you have a thermometer and do you have the and for someone who has battled with a longstanding diagnosis of ad. This is the challenge of a lifetime to get all these things in one place at one time so it definitely was a learning curve for but my first class was faking pastry with Chef laura's which. I really enjoyed having him as one of my first teachers but very quickly taught me that baking and pastry is not my number one. So the culinary students culinary degree culinary students have to take a couple of front of a house in a couple of baking and pastry type courses whereas if you there for baking and pastry you. Don't they don't necessarily get the culinary classes the storeroom of some of those other ones. So you would just doing it as a culinary student. Yes.
