"Conviction rate of the criminal legal system nevertheless we still persist and legal reform. So let us not dismiss article foreign five because of the imperfections of a un or international human rights system. The second suggestion are wanna say is that we need to maintain attention to the cases underway. It is complex overlap. Many of the thousands for the alab cases from two thousand nineteen or overlapping with the twelve. As well as the forty seven. So i think we really need to maintain attention to this. What happens to them. Democracy dies in darkness but the protection of the rights of the people in custody cannot also disappear into a black hole and this requires all of us to be paying. Attention are specific platforms. Perhaps jerry we can talk about and that is that could be deployed like the olympics. Twenty twenty two a hong kong upcoming iccpr review at the un and etc. But i i look forward to the discussion. And because there's quite a rich and diverse depths of expertise and i look forward to the passions and discussions l. We've heard a second very powerful than comprehensive statement. I'd like to begin the discussion by five o'clock a we have a few minutes for my own. Immediate questions In listening to these wonderful talks it seemed to me. there are three other issues. I'd like to hear more about first of all and this is a matter of concern to all of us taking art here is. Are we by holding this meeting in violation of the national security law hong kong. We haven't focused yet on the overseas. Reach that the pr. See the hong kong government claims to have in exercising jurisdiction of what we say outside of hong kong. We're not chinese nationals. Were not residents of hong kong at this point Do they have any rights at charge us. After i noticed the last time we had an in person roundtable that the council on hong kong were the speakers. Martin lee the great. Us civil libertarian. Lawyer and jimmy lai the publisher of the full of now been convicted. And martin is uh spirit. Jail at this point sees eighty two jimmy. Lai's a seventy three i think. And he's likely to be there the rest of his life. I was disappointed when we have that session. That are martin was his usual incisive fearless. Self jimmy lai will never met before was disappointingly. Moderate and at one point. I whispered to him. You could be outspoken here. The council is free. it was off the record Talk and for reasons. I couldn't understand. He seemed much more moderate than his image. So that's one question. What is the reach. Legitimate reach of this national security second and a dentist started to touch on this is what is the role of foreign judges. I supported e continuing participation on the court of final appeal of hong kong of the permanent of the non permanent judges from the uk and canada. Australia cetera. i've i changed my view since the national security though because i ask myself and others. Nobody's answered denison the physician to answer this What role do these aren judges. Play a court of final. He did they get to consider the bail. Application of jimmy lai. I didn't see them participating. Do they take part in these other issues. That our national security law cases or even sedition cases. Are they mere decoration. Are they just window dressing. And i think if i were asked and you notice they never ask. American common law people who were experts to serve interpret common law in the basic law of mean commonwealth. But if i were asked to serve or any american good. I wouldn't do this now. It's a misleading of the public. And i want to hear what our experts say. The third question. I have is. We haven't mentioned the most recent development. Which is the effort by the government through writing a letter to a civic organization to insist that it reveal all its records going back decades. Its membership its finances foreign funds. It's received and i thought this law is not applicable as jared has emphasize it's not to be retroactive. But what should the defense do in these cases so they three issues. I'd love to hear some brief comments and then we have a great audience. I'd like to talk to them so we need brief answers area. I'll i'll try to answer question. Two and free briefly You ask what is the roll off the foreign non-permanent judges in hong kong. And i agree with you. That what i think. The s the question is what are they actually doing going to hong kong. First of all they will not be allowed to hear national security related cases. Because i'm in under the era of a patriots administrating hong kong okay Do you think they would regard. These foreign judges stayed being. Beijing asked patriots of china. That's ludicrous to say that. The british or australian judge will be regarded as a patriot. fit to administer hong kong especially when it comes to these national security cases so these judges will not be allowed to hear a national security cases. Where the rule of law is under most severe attack. they would have nothing to do with those cases. That's number one number two is. How much do these judges really understand. What's happening on the ground. go up to hong kong. Maybe one or two months per year. They lift than mandarin oriental with driver and know day. Go in and out of the court of final appeal building here a few cases which is across the street from there..

"Cardinal joseph zen has repeatedly warned that this china no good and that the vatican was not getting anything out of it a year ago he told me about the choice of bishops in china. Lysm say the pope has a right to veto d- nomination by the company's authority. But i doubt if there is such thing in the end agreement on even suppose. They really derive veto. How many times you can veto because you. You'll be embarrassed to veto indefinitely your thoughts joy george. Is that an accurate where we are. Today it's very accurate. Read a raymond. I've discussed with cardinals in As you have to set up a process in which the only thing the holy say can do is saying no is simply ridiculous. This is a violation of the church's own canon law It is a real blow against an evangelically. Vital missionary solipsism in china. And if we could just continue for just a moment on some of the further. I want to share with the audience george. Some of these rules. They read this way. Clergy will not be allowed to organize host or participate in unauthorized religious activities held outside the authorized places of religious activities and will not be permitted to preach and schools other than religious. Schools clergy must belong to one of china's state run religions pastors of quote home churches or underground churches will not be permitted to be registered clergy. The rules also called for religious clergy training programs for the political education of religious clergy as well as their cultural education and clergy should also be judged on their behavior with a system of rewards and punishments in place. How should the vatican be reacting to these rules toward. It should immediately reopen the negotiation on the appointment of bishops. It should be vocally publicly. Some of these folks coming up. And they all say the same thing. President Biden is going to help us. We're coming to work Well, in a momento, por fav or mi amigo luck. This country has been locked down for a year. Ah, lot of people in this country that they're here legally don't even have jobs to go back to Some people are doing two and three odd jobs just to keep food on the table. I would think of President somebody that cared about the country cared about the people that live within its borders would take care of those that were here legally before with his irresponsible rhetoric, he encouraged others to come here illegally. "Los Angeles Children's Hospital Los Angeles because your child's health is essential first for Arizona State. Their head coach is Bobby Hurley, the great guard from Duke fame back in the early nineties, his sixth season now and Arizona state, and this is not the lineup he wanted to put out this evening, but this is what he's got left there without four key players. Most importantly, Remy Martin Lee, all Pac 12 Point guard, who returned for his senior season. He is out due to covert protocols today in his place in the backcourt. They're two stars will be Alonzo Verge Junior, a six to senior from Chicago 17 points per game 4.5 rebounds per game. He is the reigning Pac 12 6th Man of the year. There. Freshman Phanom is Josh Christopher. He's the Southern California guy from Carson 65 freshmen. He averages 17.5 points per game to lead Arizona State. 5.5 rebounds also leads the team in steals. Holland Woods will take a starting lineup spot 6 Ft. £180 grad transfer from Phoenix. He comes from Portland State, where he was all Big Sky Last season. Marcus Bagley, a 6 Ft. 8 £215 freshman from Sacramento. He is the Younger brother of Marvin Bagley, who is a star for the Sacramento Kings. Marcus averages, 12.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest, and inside will be Chris Austin. 6 FT. 9 £210 junior from Crowley, Louisiana Elite College JC Transfer. He's one of those guys really being pressed into action, The Arizona State will likely only have an eight man rotation today. The Trojan should have the full complement of players, a deep USC team for Andy Enfield to choose from, but he has been Consistent of late with his starting lineup. The head coach now in his eighth season, fourth and U. S. C s all time wins list looking for his 140th USC win here today, and he will start by sending out Taj et. The point guard. Et has played a lot of minutes for the Trojans. He's the only true point guard they have right now. With Ethan Anderson still out, We're hoping that Ethan will be able to return next week. He has missed six straight games. ET leads the team in threes, leads the team and free throw percentage. He's second in assists and scoring and he's Leading the team in scoring in Pac 12 play. Joining him in the back court will be Drew Peterson. Peterson has a lot of point guards skills, has more of a wing build. He has 19 rebounds over the last two games. He flirted with a triple double on Thursday night had 10 assists, tying his career high, also had eight rebounds and seven points to go with it. On the wing will be Isiah White. Isaiah had a season high 22 points versus Arizona member against Utah in the previous game. He had a season high in points with 12. So he upped up by 10 and went for 22 against the Wildcats in McKale, a big time game for Isaiah White. He made three threes in that game against Arizona. He had three threes all season, coming in. And he leads the team in steals as well inside for the Trojans. It's the Mobley brothers, Isaiah Mobley found out the other night. He was playing so well to those unfortunate he just could not stay on the floor was getting cold for a lot of loose about loose ball fouls on rebounding attempts. The action in the paint on Thursday, But Isaiah ever since the restart when USC had the long layoff between games, he seems to have refreshed his offensive game a little bit. He's 14 of 24 from the field since the restart. That's 58% before the break. He was at 41%, so he has been much more efficient since coming back from that covert break. And then, of course, inside for the Trojans. The seven footer, the freshman Evan Mobley had his third double double the other night 19 points and 11 rebounds. He's top three in the Pac 12 in rebounds, field goal percentage and blocks. He's averaging 2.7. Blocks per game, which is number one among all freshmen, and he is a national player of the year candidate. He made the wooden awards mid season top 25. So the headline match up for this one will be those two freshmen the scouts to be looking at Evan Mobley in Josh Christopher. But for us see the real advantages, Just the overall death and size of this Trojans team going up against a small Undermanned Arizona State squad should be plenty of advantages for USC. But We know Bobby Hurley will counter by trying to make this.

"What about you. Peyton well You know. I think for me When i look at my ministry career. I you know there's kind of like i guess for some guys like a khalil career ladder for me. It's like chutes and ladders career. Shoot for me right. I went the other way. I started off as a young guy. Twenty s leading a mega church. And you know just had a realization. I need to leave all. Listen go to the mission field. And so i ended up at martin lee jones's church and that was great oz able to set up a fiber one c. three and Ninety nine That it's been going strong ever since by when nine eleven hit. I was working as the evangelist at lloyd. Jones church helping implant out there for church ever in nine eleven rock the economy here in statistically giving shrink by fifty percent so i got that phone call from my mission borio and hey we have bad news. Well that in a being my great news because after being there is an evangelist for a year with no fruit. I ended up suddenly working in the community and it was a rough place. I mean i've got a scar right here from getting beat up. Six weeks guy pounding. My head and put knocked me unconscious. It was a rough place. I mean it was the Dockside presbyterian church was affectionately noticed stanfield and It was just roughly. So i i went to work in a factory and you know within a matter of weeks Three people had come to faith. And i was doing all the hard core evangelism. I mean this stuff that nobody wants to do open. Openers dinners with rugby players. Share their testimony I you know. I do door to door like i did on the gnarly stuff right. I'd go out with a A film crew on friday nights none of that had any fruit but that started me on a trajectory of really just working in a factory. A firefighter. I had my rn degree. barista's started a a a a church in a starbucks That was probably the funniest one. there there were just so many stories that if i had not been by vocational literally Out of ever since nineteen ninety. Eight till now. What does that twenty two years There have been two years where i have been supported since then fulltime by a church and in both of those were churches that i pointed. And that's it out of this twenty two years and i wouldn't have it any any other way to be honest but between raising support working by vocationally In in sometimes getting paid from the church that that was comfortable for me have this mix. That was kind of like you had a scale in over. Sometimes in the mission dictated you worked with their hands. More other times that the mission dictated you receive more support depending on what what i was trying to do. So that Bad news was my god moment. That phone call was probably one of the most pivotal moments of my Missionary life and. I still thank god for it. That what most ministers are afraid of is the day that the money runs out actually turns out to be your greatest blessing in many ways so try and i started preaching. That's right as wait for you to give the invitation man. See your hand in the back. There is a check past plate now vacillates. what about you. J. yeah. I love that man. Arthur actually met in our coffee shop. Here actually in longview. And but i love that story and Yeah kind of support raising afford so interesting. When i look back on our life and how award really use our life leading into ministry I did actually got bachelor's degree and commercial. Advertising photographer for ten years of architects stop before stepped into ministry. And we've been through so much sufferings many different avenues of suffering with the liberal through my wife's health and some other things and so as we stepped into support raising. If you ask me trust the oh absolutely right like we can trust the lower of its support. Raising always taught me others another foundation that we can go here and I think one moment that was real typical for me was about a year and searchers plans and we were about we were making it. We were completely support. Raised outside of our group ministering to and As we're planting. The church and i was probably about eighty percent support raised We were getting these checks. Just randomly every month though coming in people. Here's a one time gift on top of what's happening and we're making it. But i remember we were coming up in december and we were coming up to where we were going to be about fifteen hundred short a month and so we're going. This is fifteen hundred from making it like paying bills getting food. And we're praying and through into the you're giving things we're just praying and i remember asking the lord just i don't know why five thousand keeps coming to my mind's we're just praying five thousand would get us to march when we were going to possibly get some some more funds to provide for us and so we were just praying. That and i just kind of had the sense okay. We're gonna trust you. We're going to keep going. We started meeting with people and inviting them in and i remember Another person with our church was like hey. I don't even know how the church is going to make this month. Let alone for your salary like really panicking My wife at the same time is going. How are we gonna like. Nothing's coming in. All of december. I remember it reaches ripe for christmas. Nothing he'd come in. We're still praying. Okay my god. I i feel like you're going to do this kind of just getting sense like okay. It was december thirty first and it was a sunday. I get done preaching. We get home and i check our account to see if anything came in at like four o'clock. Nothing came in and i'm like okay. I still praying. My mom was visiting. And we're talking. And then i was like you know what i'm gonna go check again at like six o'clock because it has to be in by seven on the thirty first within that two hours three people gave hopped on to gave five hundred dollar gifts and one person that i hadn't talked to him about four or five months gave a four thousand dollar gift. We got five thousand on the head. Mike now not in prosperity or anything like that. But i'm like god. I just see you're caring for your mission and your providing like let me continue to go forth in the midst of everyone else feeling like this isn't worth it or whatever and that just catapulted like no we we. We're going to be faithful and we're utterly dependent on you no matter what that looks like. We're gonna move forward. So that was. That's always a wild moment. That i just look back and go okay. I see and we'll keep taking steps and so great about how. 'bout you tyler. Yeah mine Mine is an interesting one. So i was in the same training class. I guess you could say with. Cj both at the beach Through reliant when we started our support raising journey so i was pretty pumped ready to go like had a lot of flack appointments set up for when we got back to austin From our time in orlando During training and i sat down with someone us from our community. And i gave him even the presentation of. Hey this is what we're doing. This is why. I which you know. You know your nc lear for some time and this is why we're planting and why would wanna do this and we're going to reach a would you join our team. L. melts and he was like join. Your your team can drain your team at five dollars a month and i i was like There is absolutely no way. I'm gonna reach this massive goal that i just received that you know that.

"Too to predict it. And there's no question that no freedom is a constantly evolving project. That that inside you as you look at as you look at these authoritarian states. What we learned in the Arab spring is that what comes in the aftermath of Of totalitarian ism of authoritarianism, whether it's by the Communist Party of China or by the Soviet Union, or frankly, by the Jose Mubarak of Egypt. What comes afterwards is not simple and requires understanding requires architecture requires investment. And without those things, and without those investments by outsiders, like the United States, you end up with you end up with problems. So you know what we're looking at for China. Is, is you? Ah, very dangerous. A government that is creeping towards totalitarianism that represents a threat. And yet our options are not. You know more with China our options we hope or to turn China in a different direction. The prospects for that are difficult In your essay for the dispatch. You talk about the foreign policy tools. So what are those tools? Well, you know, let's talk about Let's talk about what we could be doing what we could be doing in terms of China, but I think these air He's a really universal again, each in any country where people don't have freedom. Whether it's political freedom, economic freedom still freedoms religious Williams There are those who yearn to be free and they need help. They need tools, and they aren't the same tools in his place. I'll give you a perfect example in Iran that the government has taken over all labor unions. People don't want to be in government from labor unions. They want to be able to organize for themselves, and they want to be able to resist the government. When they need you. They need help in Hong Kong. We have unbelievably powerful dissidents Joshua, Juan Martin Lee and others who have risked Their lives and their livelihood to stand for freedom. They need our help. They need us to stand up for them, and they needed to impose costs. On the Chinese government for their behavior. "Decision to bar Martin's Lee was not result of pressure from president trump he claims that Israel change course after looking at their itinerary which was a media circus from himself was stumping for Israel to bar Omar and to leave and again this is one of the problems like this is something that presumably if trump once Netanyahu to do he should do it behind closed doors mainly because it now looks like Netanyahu is doing his bidding as opposed to making an independent decision trump tweeted out representatives on March Lee by the face of the Democratic Party and they hate Israel so from just spilling out there what his strategy here as which is make Omar and to leave the face of the movement and demonstrate that they hate Israel and have Israel bar them and it's in Yahoo for reasons that may include the fact yes an election coming up and also the fact that they do in fact support the destruction of the state of Israel he has decided to to do what trump suggested trump also tweeted along these lines would show great weakness if Israel allowed representatives Omar and to lead to visit they hate Israel and all Jewish people there's nothing that can be said or done to change their minds Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office they are disgrace calling Israel week if they don't do what you want that's not wonderful again many things can be troll wants one trump isn't wrong on a moral level to leave the number should not be allowed in to Israel allows critics all the time just not people one destroy it three monthly want to destroy Israel four it may not be smart PR to do that even though it is morally justifiable to do that because now you are seeing the Democrats rally around these people now again this is a difference between Netanyahu's interest in front trump wants Democrats to rally around the squad so he can point to the squad and say that's one facing down in twenty twenty so for domestic political consumption is makes a lot of sense for trump for Netanyahu maybe not quite the same thing after all this now who now has to deal with Chuck Schumer he has to deal with Nancy Pelosi has yet to deal with these Democrats sometimes forcing people to a choice results in the worst possible result for you we'll get to more of this in just one second first I need to take a moment to remind you that there's a whole.

"Martin Lee David van camp, the whole clubhouse here. Scott, robin. Great college. Scotty. How are you? I'm well. Thanks, sure. About that more on your bears in a second. Yeah. A little earlier in the show David van camp says shutdown done by the end of the week. What say Scott. Well, yeah, it's no it's not going to be done by the end of the week now. No, no, do you think? No, nobody's who's gonna blink. Who's going to blink? Well, I don't know. I'm just quoting David van Cam. I disagree with David on that one. That's okay. I mean, he may be right. I don't know. I don't happening. Maybe my problem was I watched that interview with Alexandro Cossio Cortez. And I was reminded that I'm supposed to be a naive millennial until I'm like, you know, what I'm gonna say they're going to figure something out by the end of the week. The Anderson Cooper at one point said, you know, I gotta rethink this whole career choice, man. This is this is what I've been doing. I get it. I get relegated to this. What's the interviewing her make? Yeah. Yeah. That well with the shutdown. I mean, basically, I'm looking for the I bet of two thousand nineteen are you guys interested because you have differing opinion. Would you put my seat you saying the end of this week David into this week? Okay. Then I'll go five on that one. All right. Okay. Okay. Can you write it down? Please. Thank you. All right. We're keeping track. All not saying workweek. Right. So like Saturday if there's a deal struck on Saturday. I'll go with that. Yeah. I'll take I'll take. But that's okay. All right. I'll take five on that. By the way, Jannie drove across the country, the government shutdown gino's gas stations were closed up. That was Disney open was those things. I mean, there's life going on as we know it. Yeah. You didn't see rambling hordes of furloughed federal workers building reason, which is in their hands. I did not. But we'd rolling across the interstate. Any of that? I did not. Wow. I'll be damned. I know. Crazy. Right. And it's nutty. Yeah. Okay. So a lot to get to here. One of the big things. People are talking about today were you know, the playoff games that happened over the weekend. As far as you're a fan of the bears. I can't think of a more heart wrenching way to go out. A lot of people talking about this kicker today. I mean, I don't I don't need to play back. The audio of it. You already know what happened? It hit the..
