"Arsenal played their round 7 makeup game against Everton and they did so in style winning four nil and going 5 points clear at the top of the table now that they are level on games with Manchester City. Don was on the call for this game. How good are arsenal Don hutchison? Unbelievable K I mean this context around the game because for 40 minutes of the game I thought ever the away side were absolutely fantastic. They never really looked like scoring, but they broke really well about four or 5 times and then sucker scores the first goal on 40. Then they get the Martinelli gold just before the time which then takes the game completely away from ever but second off, it was an absolute mauling. It was for going on 6 or 7. There was only with about 20 minutes to go. They were keeping hold of the balls in another top performer. I had Martin odegaard as my man of the match. He scored one goal Martinelli got two, but he ran the show and then the perfect night while Mikel Arteta he brought players off. He rested players. He then give minutes to other players like Smith Rowe, and the stadium K with about, I don't know, 30 minutes to go was absolutely bouncing. They had to work hard for the game, don't get me wrong for the first half when they got the tuna lead. But second off, second off, they were absolutely electric. They were on fire arsenal. They were just a sensational watch. They were beautiful sight to watch. It is such a young and exciting attack to watch Stevie. Yeah. Micheladas and arsenal go about their business. They are tros. And it speaks volumes to a manager who was under so much pressure about 12 or 18 months ago. Now has them looking as good as anybody and not just English football, but in European football. Now has them as title favorites when we look at the odds makers. It's slate right now, but arsenal are the title favorites as it stands at the top of the table with that 5 point lead. They made mental errors at the back, trying to play out, Tommy Asher, who I was surprised told me I should play it. I mean, he hasn't played this season in the league. Ben white's been playing. So he brings him in. He makes an error and decision making error. That's nothing to do with your players entirely. Those are just those are just basic mistakes within a game and mindset where clinical heard you guys talk about it yesterday about a 7% possession of so how much for mindset really these days and a game like this. And so yeah, I just I would have preferred how he just butted that straight out the ballpark. And I had to do with the yellow kick off and said, no, no, no, no. The players know where in a little depth, but we are ready for villa. That sends out a bit of message. He has to be really careful because the reason arsenal are where they are. Portugal in front, but although the World Cup brings together most of the world's best players, it doesn't have room for all of them. Football is a team game, and if your national team isn't good enough, or maybe if you don't get picked, you don't get to go. No matter how earth shattering your skills may be. In fact, the history of football is full of stars who never appeared on the game's greatest stage. Most of those who've missed out over the years have been from small countries without enough other good players to get through the qualifying stages. Liberia's George weah is one of the best examples. In the mid 1990s, he was called by many the world's best player. He won league titles in France with Paris Saint-Germain, and in Italy, with a similar. But he couldn't haul his country to a World Cup. Now George wayo is a national hero all the same. That no doubt helped him become Liberia's president in 2018. And although he was denied an appearance at the world's greatest football tournament, his son has avoided that same fate of missing out. Tim weier is an American citizen, and he's playing for the U.S. squad in Qatar, and he scored a crucial goal in the game against Wales. Lays it through. It's way up. Timothy William for the USA. For some other players, it was just a timing that didn't work out. Good dummy has best up in front of him. What a fly by John Georgie best. Another great George, George Best, played 37 times for Northern Ireland between 19 64 and 1977. But his country didn't reach a World Cup once between 1958 and 1982, so although he truly was one of the best, he never got to participate. And in Qatar, Wales had been playing in their first finals for 64 years, so although Gareth Bale has made it at last, plenty of great players didn't. But it's not just comparatively small countries like those that had seen their star players not play in the World Cup. Plenty of legendary players from bigger countries have missed out too. Take for one, France's damage in honor. He was known for his flair, his creative touches on the ball, and he had an illustrious European career. But a critical mistake he made, a careless cross that was picked up by an opposing player, led indirectly to a last minute winning goal for Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier in 1993. It cost France a place in the 1994 tournament and blighted general as international career. He was criticized by name by his coach and was pretty much shunned by the national team. In 1998, France won the World Cup on home soil without him. Perhaps the best of the world cup's absent greats, Alfredo di Stefano, lost out on playing in the World Cup with not just one country, but three. Born in Argentina in 1926, de Stefano first didn't get to play for his native country after they withdrew from the 1950 tournament. He also missed out playing for Colombia after moving and playing the league football there. He played for Colombia internationally a few times, but back then, they were not part of FIFA. In 19 53, this definitely moved to Spain, but with Spain too, he missed out on his chance. Spain missed qualifying for 1958 after being pipped by Scotland. And when the 1962 World Cup in Chile came around, for which Spain did qualify, the Stefano looked as if he would finally take part. Alas, he was injured before the tournament, and although he traveled with the Spanish squad, he never saw the pitch. Not surprisingly, even just in 20 22 alone, you could fashion a pretty decent team of players from the country that have failed to qualify. This is especially true if you stretch the rules a bit to include players who featured in past tournaments. You could start with Italy, who despite having won four world cups and been the current European champions, fails to qualify for the second time running. Out of time. But Cheney can not believe it. They still got plenty of stellar players. In a fantasy lineup of a team made up of players not in Qatar, the Italians would be well represented. Joined by Giovanni de Lorenzo right back, Leonardo bonucci, who is a world class center half, and then there's federally coquies. Speedy goal scoring winger. Austria's David Alaba, Sweden's Victor Lindelof and Scotland's Andy Robertson would also be candidates for the defense. The strikers might include the graceful Mohamed Salah of Egypt and Liverpool F.C.. And then there are two Norwegians whose clubs are vying for the top spot in England's Premier League. Just remember that because this opportunity who will lead the team into 2026 really is as a job on the football side for an American once in a lifetime. It's a great way which really is pretty true of all the men in blazers books. Let's just say they serve a lot of functions beyond just reading. David just kept shouting as we were doing it heft. And I will say the illustrations by the incredible Nate kitsch made this but what we always dreamed of it being when we began to talk about this four years ago, we wanted a really gorgeous object worthy of any coffee table if you don't have a coffee table pre order your coffee table now and they are hopeful so that it's readable for kids in the same way as many of you who have kids will know the book good night stories for rebel girls. If you see for that book, I'll be honest. They're kind of wanted this book to be something that a family is could save her and just dip in and out of and find a real marvel together. If you have a moment, dear listeners, add a review to Amazon, I know it sounds crazy, even if you just go and give it 5 stars. It is crazy how much that silly little act helps bring in a book out in 2022. That is a silly little act in our time. Our day or age. Bringing a book into the world is such a bloody mad thing to do. The other thing I noticed was the detail they went into with Kieran Tierney's injury. So the physio meetings are interesting. So yeah, Kieran, he came out with the shower and went to turn left and he said he felt his knee collapse, and I just wanted to get sick. Wow, that's a lot of detail. Very young squad as well. And some of the dynamics are funny. And like I said, they're kind of friendship is interesting to me. It's kind of funny. I like lockers that he seems like a bit of like good comic relief sort of to have. I do, but I do feel like every time our title throws to him to ask him, lacca, and like I said, what's he talking about? But Arteta must go to him because he knows latkes that can handle. That's another thing. There's very few as Roy Keane would say, senior pros. And very few big, big characters in that dressing room. I guess that's changed with Jesus and zinchenko. One thing that I did notice before we finished about it. And these documentaries are fine, but they all follow the same pattern. Like high angle shot of the training ground. The whole thing. "On neves. Do you remember it? Was that like you welcoming the Premier League to toilet Adams? You'll see more of that this season for sure. I was waiting to get in a good tackle. There will definitely be more of those to help. The start though was not what you wanted, leads went behind inside 6 minutes. Was there a moment when you just settled in and internally in your head, you thought, my God. I belong here. We are doing this. We got scored on and then in the stadium, the fans started singing, marching on together. I figured, okay, maybe they do that when we score a goal, but to have them do that after we went down a goal was actually more empowering and gave me more energy than after we scored them. Because naturally, after you score go, you're gonna have that adrenaline, you're gonna have that amazing feeling. But when you go down a goal, you're searching for something to be like, give me a positive right now so I can go harder, run more fight harder, everything. And as soon as you start hearing them sending marching out together and Ellen wrote in 36,000 all perfectly in tune, it sounds like it gives you that energy you need and the team all just responded so well. It felt like after we went down a goal was actually when we played our best football and that whole match to be able to hunt impacts, go together, no one's gonna be able to go individually or else we're gonna get popped around and not be able to win the ball. And when we started going together, we found all sorts of success. We felt more comfortable with the ball. We were winning more balls. We were creating tons of chances, having more shots, and then we all of a sudden had this confidence. And as soon as we got the first goal, I felt in my head, we're winning this game. My third first butter the date to two truly magical teams in their inaugural seasons in the United States who have created models filled with joy and wonder and really giving us all immense hope for the future growth and the future values of football in this nation. First, Vermont green FC, a new USL league two team based in the truly beautiful town of Burlington, founded by 6 football loving mates. They launched a club earlier this year with a mission of embedding environmental justice into, well, pretty well everything they do on the field and off it. They've created a delirious fan culture, an incredible brand and all of it is authentic and deeply local and utterly utterly kinetic. You watch their fan base and you just want to jump in a car, drive right up to Vermont and revel in it all for yourself, which is really everything that's great about football. And on Friday night in the playoffs, despite playing much of the second half with ten gents, they handed top seeded lionsbridge FC, their first defeat of the season, two one. First round of the U.S. already two Eastern Conference playoffs. Come on from Mont green. They're now face the Long Island rough riders. Used to coach their women's team of New York and my lord God speed to them and two Minnesota aurora, a community owned women led team basically truly fanatical footballing region who came together when defeated all season. Again, a fantastic fan base who followed and packed and sold out game after sold out game. They went on the march, sat in its USL W championship game against the South Georgia tormentor, game deadlock, one at full time, aurora goalkeeper, one time kicker, Sarah fuller, just going full Tim Howard and down the stretch. Oh, she was magnificent but tormented Nick did in overtime. It is some first season where you're only lost comes in your championship game, but that model of the team, the leadership, the fan passion, the joy that stands out and blows me away. And right now it's very tough to figure out what he's trying to get going offensively because none of the players seem to be playing in the position that suits them. None of them seem to be communicating with each other, particularly well. I thought Sterling actually I will give him an asterisk because I thought he actually had a very, very good preseason for Chelsea when he played. But it was yeah, it's shocking. And I think it's worrying and certainly worrying for many Chelsea fans, including myself. It's a wild reality took about that back line Thomas Tuchel spending a lot of pre season experimenting with a back four. A lack of steel in the midfield, that front three shifting sifting through the combinations looking for some kind of, well, anything life that hit the first front three raz mount and have it still looking far from gelling, so it's Deadwood in the squad. Wait his turn. And it's sort of took Diaz leaving for him to finally get it. And he made the most of it. In those final 12 games, after Diaz left, he contributed 11 goals over that stretch. So now he really gets his chance. Now what's going to be interesting is sort of what we were talking about before with arsenal and Gabrielle Jesus. The question early on is going to be where does he slot in? Do they expect him to come in right away and be an immediate contributor, or is this more of a long-term play? Like I said, 22 years old. "Yeah, and also we know we've seen enough Premier League campaigns and enough Premier League champions to know that sometimes you need to win these one little games that you don't play particularly well in or certainly you're not offensively particularly clicking. You mentioned earlier their back line, what I find so impressive is that they're still doing it with a four man back line, two central defenders and right back left back, who really plays wingbacks within that system and just get forward so much. It's just amazing what they do. An amazing how this team of constructed. It's amazing also how they can keep doing it mentally, how they can keep doing it physically when other players would stumble just Trent and Roberto just seem to keep on keeping on, take so much out of you, and on that note, a fascinating story, which trickled out and has not got the coverage that it probably deserves, but worth noting Jürgen Klopp at the end of the week hinted. He may leave Liverpool when his contract expires in 2024 and said he will only stay and feel if he quote feels he has the energy to lead the club.
