"45. This is morning edition. You'll be easy. It's morning edition from NPR news. I'm Rachel Martin. Martinez. Farmland is a limited resource. And over the past year, there has been a sharp climb in the cost of buying it. The high prices make it harder for young farmers to build their businesses on land, they can call their own. And as Katy pike is reports from Iowa public radio, that's especially true as demand from investors grows. Here we go. We have an online bid of 7000 asking 8000. At this farmland auction in jessup Iowa, there's more than two dozen people attending in person and lots of others are online and on the phone. Just a couple years ago, the final sale would have been near 7 or $8000 an acre. But now it's a lot different. 18,900 out of the 9 now 19,000, 19,000. The winning bids topped more than 17 and $19,000 an acre. I was astounded. Jessop farmer Ben Ricci came to check out the prices. He didn't bid this time around, but recently at another auction, he bought 40 acres for $15,000 an acre. It was way more than I ever hoped to pay, but we'll find out in a decade whether I was too high or too soon. Farmland prices have rocketed, especially in the Midwest and the high plains. Recently in Iowa, some farmland sold for no lower than $25,000 an acre. Andy helgason says it's just too much. You go there and you just get, I mean, basically it's all muscle. That's what I call it. Helgason farms corn and soybeans in north central Iowa, he says he hasn't had any success at recent auctions. Reed Thompson in central Illinois firms largely on leased farmland, but bought his first farm 7 years ago for about $10,000 an acre. He says while beginning farmers get loans to help them, they have less cash in equity than those who have been farming longer. The last cash you have, the more debt you're going to have to incur staying with less equity, but more debt, you're going to have to incur. And so it's just going to limit when you can purchase and how much you can afford to pay. So why is farmland costing so much now? Economists say things like good crop prices, a global food shortage, inflation, and record high government payments largely from the pandemic. Randy dick hoot is the vice president of real estate operations with farmers national company. The company manages farms and conducts real estate sales and farmland auctions, including the one in jessup. My last year, farmers had better yields than they thought, higher commodity prices. So they had some good income. They hadn't maybe bought anything for a while. And so when it came on the market, they were pretty aggressive buying it. There's also lots of competition from investors, people like Bill Gates, America's biggest private owner of farmland. Are you a state university economist when dong John says investors see farmland as a way to diversify their portfolio, and there's more momentum from investors than in years past. During uncertain times, when their stocks value could go down by 30%, their farmland could hold on to the value. It's unclear whether farmland prices will stabilize or continue to rise. But the Federal Reserve recently raised interest rates again. Some experts say that could help drag the value of farmland down, which could help those young farmers looking to buy land. "More and it's morning addition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin Martinez since a restrictive abortion law went into effect in Texas last year nonprofits have stepped in to help pregnant Texans travel out of state and pay for care there The law like this is having a disproportionate impact on people who are already marginalized That is Wendy Davis She's a former state senator who became well known nationally after 13 hour filibuster of a 2013 abortion bill Now she works with one of the abortion funds that's been targeted by Senate Bill 8 the near total ban on abortion in the state of Texas These funds are now legal targets under the new law which allows civil lawsuits against anyone who aids or abets in an abortion after about 6 weeks of pregnancy Davis is fighting back in court suing four people including a Republican state representative for threatening to take legal action against abortion funds Her case argues that the threats are a violation of the constitutional right to free speech And as she told our colleague lela follow the lawsuit claims the controversial law makes a mockery of the federal courts The first most important thing about our suit and other suits that have been filed against Senate bill 8 is that we are resolved to fight We aren't going away and we're not going to go away no matter what happens in June of this year with the Supreme Court's ultimate decision in the Mississippi case that is before it right now A lot of court watchers myself included believe that in June we are likely to see roe V wade overturned through the Mississippi case that the Supreme Court is considering right now We are going to make sure that we do everything we can Number one to create the kind of legislative statutory protections for safe abortion care that are needed But number two in the meantime to fight with everything that we have against laws that are in violation of constitutional protections and of course standing up to people who threaten suits for those who are doing everything they can to make access to safe abortion care possible You know when this law first passed a lot of people talked about their concern that it encouraged distrust and spying between people between neighbors and communities And I just wonder what it's like right now has that been the case I think right now it's certainly had a tremendous chilling effect As you look at the landscape in Texas what you see is that most clinics and most clinicians have complied with this law not because they've been sued but because they fear those suits And what the consequences of those will look like And that's created this terrible stalemate position where the law hasn't actually been tested We haven't seen a court actually uphold it in terms of a suit being filed a court making a decision on whether an individual has the right to sue under this law Instead we are living under the threat of it which up to this point has been enough but now we have these individuals and that's what this lawsuit is about because we feel they've given us a new opening and a new opportunity to challenge the legality of Senate Bill aide and hopefully to strike it down once and for all Now your lawsuit says that Senate Bill 8 makes a mockery of the federal courts It also talks about how it violates freedom of congregation for the most speech Can you talk about that Yes Part of freedom of speech of course and our ability to express ourselves can come in the form of making monetary donations to organizations whose work we support that is the case for those of us who donate to abortion funds and to the other practical support organizations on the ground here in Texas who are helping people access safe abortion care What type of calls what type of people are turning to abortion funds right now You know it's no surprise at all of course that a law like this is having a disproportionate impact on people who are already marginalized People of color people living on low incomes immigrants young people who don't have parental support and these are the folks who are least able to handle the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy And unfortunately least able to be able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy And that's why the support of these abortion funds and practical support organizations has been so crucial Come June you talked about the dangers the possibility that roe V wade is overturned I mean then federal protections are gone So what does this mean for a situation where already abortion laws are this patchwork at this point If roe V wade is overturned by the Supreme Court in June we know that there are more than 20 states that have trigger laws or a similar law on the books which essentially will immediately and effectively overturn the legal right to access abortion care in those states Texas is one of them And what that means is that we're going to have states where these rights are provided and protected in states where they aren't And we will all have to work tremendously hard to make sure that we can provide the greatest access to the greatest number of people to the states were safe legal abortion care is assured And then we'll have to keep fighting with everything that we have to get the statutory protections at the federal level that this moment demands and that the people of this country deserve Wendy Davis thank you so much for speaking with us Thank you for.

"Is morning edition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin Martinez the thrill of the ice the dazzle of sequins and the challenge of COVID All were on display this week and at the U.S. figure skating championships Top skaters were named the Olympic team to compete next month in China NPR's Tom Goldman was in Nashville to watch the event and talk with the athletes These national championships had fans scrambling for the skating history books By the time Nathan Chen finished his Elton John themed free skate yesterday the three time world champion was a U.S. champ for the 6th year in a row No one said a winning streak like that since the legendary Dick Button won 7 straight in the 1940s and 50s Typically low key Chen deflected credit for his achievement singling out his longtime coach Raphael are tuning in He's been pushing me every single day since I've moved to him when I was around 13 You know that's kind of I can't do this all by myself Next month in Beijing Chan will try to improve on his 5th place finish at the 2018 Olympics He'll be joined on the Olympic team by Vincent Joe and Jason Brown who finished third and fourth in Nashville The second place finisher 17 year old rising star Ilya malinin was named first alternate and judging by the way things went in Nashville melanin should stay ready The announcement of the women's U.S. Olympic skaters was quite the show All that was missing was one of the athletes At that moment 16 year old Alyssa Lew was in a Nashville hotel isolating after testing.

"Edition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin Martinez cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in the United States And low dose aspirin used to be a go to drug for trying to prevent a heart attack or stroke But the advice on this is shifting NPRs will stone reports Primary care doctor Rebecca Hoffman is getting more questions about aspirin these days Especially from her older patients You know back in the day it was standard stuff because they saw that it prevented the clotting Now her patients are seeing headlines about aspirin no longer being recommended for people over 60 who want to prevent a heart attack or stroke It hasn't been a great groundswell of protest but there has been some interest why the guidelines change Those guidelines are from the U.S. preventive services task force and they're changing because the science has changed since the influential medical panel put out its last guidance in 2016 Saleem varoni is a cardiologist at Baylor college of medicine He says newer studies are not finding as much of a benefit In part because people are taking drugs like statins So Aspen's benefit has become marginal because we have these other therapies that reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes but that bleeding risk associated with aspirin therapy has persisted That risk of bleeding and the stomach intestines and brain can be fatal and it increases with age which is why these guidelines against starting aspirin are strongest for those over 60 It's a closer call for people who are in their 40s and 50s For them it depends on their cardiovascular risk And doctors can use a formula to help gauge that It's not a decision to be made at a pharmacy counter I think we get sometimes a little bit carried away by the fact that it's over the counter So it must be safe And I would emphasize that that is not the case Aspirin helps prevent heart attack and stroke by making it harder for tiny bits of cells known as platelets to clump together And so by the same mechanism that it can prevent platelets clotting is the same mechanism that it can cause bleeding That's Johns Hopkins cardiologist Aaron mikos She stresses these new guidelines are not relevant to everyone including the patients she's hearing from who already have cardiovascular disease They call my office and say should I stop my aspirin I'm like no no you've had a bypass You've had three heart attacks You have I mean you know stay on your aspirin For them the risk of another heart attack generally outweighs the concerns of bleeding What's also confusing is that the guidelines just focus on whether or not to start taking aspirin They don't say what you should do if you're already on it Michael gaziano is a cardiologist at Brigham and women's hospital and the Boston VA If you've been on aspirin for a long time the risks are lower because the bleeding risk often occurs when you begin to start aspirin Now there are things that can change your bleeding risk once you're on aspirin For example if you start taking other medications as well like ibuprofen Gaziano led one of the recent key trials on aspirin He says the research isn't as cut and dry as the guidelines look Some people have worrying scans but they've not actually had a heart attack Now they're in the middle group and we really don't know what to do with that group as much but they're probably higher than average risk And he says the strict age cutoffs can be arbitrary They don't consider frailty or other medical conditions This is a pretty complex risk benefit calculus to do And it's not one that I think a light person can do in their kitchen The guidelines still need to be finalized and gaziano says the best advice when in doubt is to talk to your doctor Well stone and.

"How the world connects This is morning edition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin Martinez Belarus a country in Eastern Europe is being accused of bringing migrants from war torn and impoverished countries to its capital Minsk And then encouraging them to illegally cross the border into the EU It is in revenge for economic sanctions the EU placed on the Belarusian regime Poland estimates 16,000 people have illegally crossed in its border with Belarus since August NPR's rob schmitz was on that border last week Poland says hundreds of migrants are crossing into its country each day Were you able to talk to any of them Yeah And after we arrive at the border town of sokol my producer and I heard that police were looking for two migrants wandering around the town We went outside to check and a few minutes later we found police officers with two men who looked exhausted And you can hear me speaking of them in Spanish here the two men were from Cuba Yeah but Poland's border with Belarus I wouldn't imagine rob is a typical place where you'd find Cubans at least I wouldn't think No these are the forests of Eastern Europe quite a distance from the Caribbean I asked them how they had gotten here Belarus had Belarus They said they had visas for Belarus They flew from Havana to Moscow in a smuggler drove them to Belarus They said Belarusian soldiers helped them climb through razor wire into Poland and for the past ten days they had been hiking through forests sleeping under piles of leaves and they were caught by Poland's border patrol twice Each time they were taken back to Belarus and that's where Danielle Machado puyol says soldiers beat him with batons but for sending them back to Poland He shows me his legs They're cut bruise and swollen and he can barely walk After we were pushed back they beat us badly and they refused to give us food or water and now we're going on ten days with hardly anything to eat or drink he says they've been drinking water from a river and eating raw corn from the fields He's starving and he says he feels like a ball that's being tossed between Poland and Belarus Nobody wants him He's not alone Some of them are Iraqi some of them are curds There are people from Yemen from Syria there are people from African countries like Nigeria Cameroon Kalina tuana works for the humanitarian organization fundacio de lania which is delivering food and water to migrants helping them with asylum applications She says the government of Belarus is orchestrating this crisis They are inviting them to Belarus saying that they can cross you border from there And they are getting like a 7 day Visa or stamp And then Belarusian soldiers escort them to the border and help them illegally cross it It's Warnock says when Polish border guards catch them they're supposed to allow them to apply for asylum Instead they're putting most of them in vans and taking them back to Belarus where soldiers often beat them and send them back to Poland again At least 5 migrants have died and swank fears more will perish as the weather gets colder She says the other day she found a group from Iraq with three young children suffering from hypothermia They were very very cold youngest child We didn't really see if she was breathing We had to get her warm So she started to breathe normally We couldn't get in contact with the younger children because they were so weak So I called an ambulance and Poland's border patrol took two children into adults but sent a 6 year old child with 5 adults back to Belarus but not everyone is sent back A Syrian family who wouldn't give their names for fear of being caught spoke to NPR at a local homeless shelter The father a psychologist whose family fled war says he paid a travel agencies $16,000 to secure visas to Belarus and to be escorted to the Polish border He his wife and their two young children crossed a river and hiked through dense forests for 12 hours before being caught he says his son's spirit kept him going He was just saying to me that he just lose my hand just catch my hand And I will keep walking He's my hero He thinks Poland did not send his family back because they were suffering from hypothermia They had young children and they have a good chance of being granted asylum in the EU This phenomenon we've been witnessing there recently is a kind of weaponization of migration Marching arch is the deputy foreign minister of Poland He says Belarusian leader Alexandra Lukashenko and his financial backer the Russian president Vladimir Putin have launched a hybrid attack on the European Union After the EU accused Lukashenko of stealing his country's last election it placed economic sanctions on Belarus and protruded out says this migration crisis is Lukashenko's plot to destabilize Europe Lukashenko denies all of this When I ask why Poland is violating European Union law and the UN Geneva conventions by sending these refugees back to Belarus without processing them he stands his ground If we'll allow more and more people to cross the border then mister Lukashenko who's doing also business on that will invite even more of those people So what should we do Meanwhile activists along the border report that Belarusian soldiers are becoming more violent when Poland's border guards send back migrants Rob Poland says Belarusian president Lukashenko has turned human trafficking into a business any evidence of that Yes A Polish journalist found a trove of documents left behind by a group of migrants along the border He shared these documents with us There are list of travelers from Iraq receipts of payment made to Belarusian travel agencies for flights to Belarus on a state owned airline and receipts of stays at state run hotels There are also signatures of Belarusian officials who made all of this happen What's also telling is at the beginning of the year there was only one flight a week from Iraq to Belarus Now there are several from multiple cities Iraqi airways says their flights are sold out through November And that's just Iraq There are flights coming from Africa Asia and Latin America Going back to the Cuban man you met at the beginning of this story What's the latest with him I've been in touch with his family They tell me that after I interviewed him Danielle was sent back to Belarus When he got there soldiers beat him up again and they beat the other Cuban man he was traveling with so badly that they fractured his skull The two men are still along the border injured scared and still hoping to make it to the European Union That's NPR's rob schmitz who just returned from a reporting trip to the border of Poland and Belarus rob thanks a lot Thank you.

worse Fewer birds have been affected because of timing The spill happened just after nesting season and just before migratory birds made their appearance Yesterday I spoke with Michaels at cardi the director of the oiled wildlife care network at UC Davis He's helping rescue birds and other animals and explained the scope of this disaster There was quite a bit of oil out in the environment We have teams covering the entire area from Long Beach harbor all the way down through Carlsbad So that's three different counties Los Angeles orange and San Diego They're reporting not as many birds as they had feared initially but they do say things are getting better every day and the number of live oiled animals that are out there are actually decreasing in numbers What are the other animals that are at risk Basically every species can be negatively affected due to oil exposure So the greatest concern for us are the birds because they're uniquely sensitive to oiling Their feathers keep them warm in an aquatic environment And when oil gets on those feathers it allows cold water to seep next to the skin and for an animal that normally has a body temperature near 106° And has a high metabolic rate They can get cold they can start to waste away and so either die or get very very ill in a matter of days due to that Marine mammals are also at risk usually more chronically though so due to ingestion of the oil Those are animals we're going to be tracking over time though to see if there is an increase in animals that strand And you know one other thing Michael I was thinking about is that one way or another down the food chain the wildlife that you're trying to save relies on plants and smaller life forms to survive Have you been able to gauge it all how they are affected by the spill Yes you're absolutely right Basically oil can affect all levels of the food chain We are trying to rescue and rehabilitate all those upper vertebrate animals at the end of the food chain But plankton invertebrates all different animals can be affected That is something that it's going to take a while to understand Scientists through a natural resource damage assessment process are out there right now collecting samples to come up with an overall estimate an injury determination for the ecosystem as a whole And from that we'll have a much better idea as to the larger impacts throughout that food chain You know when we see the animals on television at least when I see him on television oiled up and suffering it breaks my heart but you're right there I mean you and your organization oiled wildlife care network You're right there with these animals You've got your hands on them Do you ever still get heartbroken or have you done this long enough where it's a job that you have to finish to save these animals Every single day every single spill that I've been on it is a heartbreaking situation Obviously animals don't want to be oiled They're caught in an accident of human cause but really working hard to care for these animals to provide them the necessary rehabilitation the cutting edge technology applying research to them and really trying to do what we can to reverse the anthropogenic damage that occurred to them It is heartbreaking but it's also the most rewarding thing I've ever done when you can get an animal that comes in as heavily coated as you mentioned and actually see them fly off or swim off at the end of the spill There is nothing better than that Michael zucchini the director the oiled wildlife care network Michael thank you very much Well thank you very much It's a historic day today marks the first time indigenous people's day will be observed across this country This year president Joe Biden made it official proclaiming the day of federal holiday shared with Columbus day For doctor Susan faircloth today is much more than just the Monday of a three day weekend It's critically important for me that indigenous people's day not just be treated as a day off Fair cloth is director of the school of education at Colorado state university and she's a member of the coharie tribe of North Carolina For me as an indigenous person the president's proclamation is critically important in that President Biden noted specifically the sovereignty of native nations The proclamation walks a line still acknowledging Columbus day in the contribution of Italian Americans and shaping this country But in a President Biden also recognizes the atrocities committed against native people by Americans of European descent Specifically the proclamation says as follows centuries centuries long campaign of violence displacement assimilation and terror I think that in doing so he speaks to the ability for both of those Those histories and for both of those groups to exist and to be acknowledged simultaneously There are more than 600 different state and federally recognized native tribes across the United States Indigenous peoples day has been recognized for more than three decades but only in 12 states and Washington D.C. Doctor fare class says today offers an opportunity for educators to rethink how they approach American history When we teach about indigenous peoples or Native American peoples we tend to teach about us as being in the past So we tend to be relegated to something that happened hundreds of years ago or decades of go And it creates the appearance that native peoples are no longer here Fairclough says no matter how you decide to mark this holiday It's important to take some time to celebrate the past and present lives of Native Americans We are the original peoples of this land.

"So that's a business perspective and by the way rates let's also the pakistani government's perspective more or less. They want to look at the world more through an economic lens and they do see new possibilities in this new situation. What about just people. Though steve sell many afghans are still so desperate to get out of the country. Yeah in pakistan is helping some people who are in afghanistan. the country has said they're gonna let people from afghanistan so long as they have documents to travel onward to someplace else. We met for example an afghan doctor who was allowed to cross over to pakistan. Because he says he can re- relocate to germany pakistan is not allowing refugees. Who want to stay here because they already have millions of refugees from four decades of war. But i should note that it appears that some refugees are are getting in. It's widely believed that at different border-crossing west of where we were is easier to pass through and it is possible to find newly arrived afghans in pakistani cities so this region is going to continue to change. "The gist of the plan will center around mandates. Get vaccinated or lose your job. I'm Rachel Martin Martinez. Those mandates will be on federal employees and contractors, along with healthcare workers and some private companies. The Department of Justice is now suing the state of Texas over its restrictive abortion law. And it's been 20 years since 9 11 here how the attack changed the way Wall Street looks. It's Thursday, September 10th back in 88. He said it straight wrapped big Daddy Kane is 53. The news is next. Live from NPR news in Washington. I'm Dave Mattingly. President Biden is ordering millions of workers in the U. S to get vaccinated against covid 19 or face consequences. NPR's Asma Khalid reports on Biden's six point strategy to further combat the coronavirus unveiled at the White House. Yesterday, The president announced a series of wide ranging steps his White House is taking to boost vaccinations and protect people from the virus. This is not about freedom or personal choice. It's about protecting yourself and those around you. At the core of his plan are a series of mandates for federal workers, healthcare workers, federal contractors and even private sector employees. He has instructed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to draft a rule that will require businesses with 100 or more employees to mandate vaccines or weekly testing for their workers. Some Republicans were quick to denounce these moves as unconstitutional. Asma Khalid NPR NEWS The White House public schools in Los Angeles are ordering students 12 and older to be fully vaccinated against Covid 19 by the end of the year. Those who can't show proof of full vaccination will be required to study remotely. Los Angeles is the nation's second largest school district with about 630,000 students. The Food and Drug Administration has issued some decisions on Vaping products sold in the US NPR's Allison Aubrey says the FDA postponed a decision on whether products made by Jewel can remain on the market. The FDA has reviewed hundreds of applications from the makers of electronic nicotine products to determine if the benefit for adult users who are trying to quit cigarettes outweighs the risk to youth who can use the products and become addicted. So far, the agency has denied more than 130 applications covering more than 900,000 flavored products. Including Apple crumble, Doctor Cola and Cinnamon toast cereal flavors, which seemed designed to appeal to teenagers. The agency says many of the remaining applications are in the final stages of review. Allison Aubrey. NPR NEWS Washington The Justice Department is suing Texas over a new state law that bans abortions after roughly six weeks of pregnancy. The federal lawsuit argues the law is unconstitutional by infringing on the rights of women. A federal judge says Florida's anti riot law is unconstitutional. In a 90 page decision, Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee says Under the law, bystanders or people engaged in peaceful protests could face criminal charges. He ruled the law to be vague and overbroad and a violation of First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly and of due process protections The law was recently enacted as a way to curb violent demonstrations. The governor Rhonda Santos, has touted that law. This is NPR news. A State Department spokesman says 10 US citizens and 11 green card holders were among those aboard a Qatar Airways flight out of Afghanistan's capital Yesterday. It was the first plane to leave Kabul since the U. S military withdrew from the country at the end of last month. The plane landed in Doha with about 200 people aboard. Meanwhile, the UN's development agency says Afghanistan could plunge into complete poverty by the middle of next year now that the Taliban controlled the country. Justice Stephen Breyer remains guarded about when he might retire from the U. S. Supreme Court. NPR's Nina Totenberg spoke to Briar about that. Breyer infuriated lots of Democrats this year when at 83. He did not retire and give President Biden the chance to name a new liberal justice. I do not believe I should stay on the Supreme Court or want to stay on the Supreme Court until I die. And when exactly I should retire or will retire has many complex parts to it if his plans on retirement remain obscure. The realities of the court's docket in the upcoming term are not abortion guns and possibly affirmative action are all on the docket. Nina Totenberg.
