"For financial services Colin Martin joins us right now. They're fixed income research acts. Colin, I'm going to cut to the chase. It drives me nuts in financial media where fixed income sophisticates talk about spread. They talk about dynamics. They talk about as if 2022 didn't exist. I looked at one blended iconic bond portfolio down about 17%. I looked at an individual piece, which I'm just going to mention, the 30 year Microsoft piece is down 30% from its price peak at one ten as well. Let's begin with a look back. How bad is the carnage? Well, Tom, it was a really bad year in 2022. And what we tell our clients that Schwab's unfortunately, we can't undo that. How we do like to frame it though is making sure that you're really matching the investments you own with what your time horizon is. So I'm going to use that Microsoft example. You just gave us because a lot of times in the financial media we hear people sort of sensationalize things with like the 30 year treasury and the carnage witness there. But the way we look at it, Tom, a lot of our clients and a lot of individual investors aren't owning 30 year treasuries or 30 year Microsoft bonds. Maybe they have a liability in 30 years, but we don't think a lot of our clients, a lot of individual investors. So we really focus more on the intermediate side of the equation. But I think another way to frame it is what I said before is matching that time horizon. If you buy a bond and you're holding it to maturity, these prices are unrealized. These are not actual paper losses. They're not realized losses. And you know what to expect at a given time frame. Now the same is not true for funds, of course. And that's a whole different story. But we can't undo what we saw last year. It's been a strong start to 2023. We don't expect this pace to continue, of course. But we still think the outlook is favorable now. But again, you just need to align your investments with your time frame and objectives. And what's so important there, folks, is mister Martin absolutely nails where people like me go out to the sensationalism of a 30 year old daresay a 97 year Austrian piece to get a big number to put make a banner pop on television or even abandon a pop on radio with that said, what is the duration that you have? The duration of U.S. paper is 5 6 7 years. Do you come inside that within most portfolios? No, we think that's okay, Tom. And actually, if you're looking for good examples instead of a 30 or 50 or you can go to those European hundred year bonds, that's going to give you a better bang for your buck. But in terms of what we're telling our clients, you know, 5, 5 duration or even a little bit more would be okay with us. The way we frame it is to not just be short right now. I know that's a concern, especially given last year's performance. But we think there's this idea and hesitancy to move further out in the curve because of the inverted yield curve. A common question is why would I invest in a ten year bond at three and a half percent if I can get more in a money market fund or a 6 month T Bill? And we'd rather lock in those yields with certainty. So what that magic number is, we don't really have one. It's going to depend on each individual investor, but we think it's probably a little bit longer than what most individual investors have right now. Khan, don't you get a little concerned or feel uneasy given the rally we've already seen how much yields have come down is concerned that maybe the trades already up. It is a concern Lisa, when we published our 2023 outlook, we thought the ten year could fall to the three to three and a quarter percent range. And we got awfully close to there in just a few couple of just a couple of days. Our guidance is a little bit more difficult now. And we understand it is a difficult pill to swallow to accept a yield at a three and a half percent when it was just four and a quarter percent for the ten year back in October. So it is a little bit more challenging, but our outlook really does remain the same because we do think growth should continue to slow. We think what we've seen in the soft data should translate to a softening in the hard data. We think inflation is going to continue to trend lower. And we think as time progresses, we will see those fed rate cuts. And that's really what it comes down to because if you look at intermediate and long-term yields, markets are forward looking and they're seeing, well, what's the average of that short term rate over X period of time? And we don't know if those rate cuts are going to come in 2023. We think it could be a 2024 issue, but we do think that as growth continues to slow. We will see yields kind of across the curve, especially on the short end fall a little bit. That's the second half of 2023 and the early 2024 issue though. Colin, when do you think that inflation will fall 2%, the fed's goal? It could be later this year. It's probably a 2024 thing. One thing that we look at a lot is first is wages. Yes, they're coming down. But they're still at an elevated level. And I think that we know is a key driver of inflation. And we just look at the broad labor market landscape. It's still relatively strong. We're still trying to figure out how we marry the two issues of the headlines we see of all these job cuts and hiring increase announcements with a still low unemployment rate, but given that that hard data we see, we think the

"We don't need to present hypotheticals on this issue. We need only to look at the last four years under donald trump and the fucking gripped that his entire family put together in order to squeeze much money away from the american people away from agencies away from social safety nets and into his fucking pocket. So how is it that joe manchin who on his own is a fucking sellout because he has more money from coal than anywhere else right as well as the fucking cope brothers decides that after witnessing donald trump and all of his family's fucking gripped over the last four years that we don't need to put in writing the things that we expect from our fucking president and vice president. How is that right. Because here's the thing that you are essentially asking burglars to watch the fucking beck. That's what we are doing right now with our politicians right. We can't get shit done with regard to big pharma and how they fry their prescriptions. Right that they create for the american public you know why because three of the biggest right dem's quote unquote middle of the roaders. Take close to two million dollars from big fucking pharma. All of this is a god. Damn sham and i wonder how we make it through each and every week without going out of our front doors and just screaming that primal scream and waiting for something to fucking change in happen because what i am starting to recognize is that it does not matter who the fuck we vote for because at some way form shape and down the road they will turn into a grip. They're just like everybody fucking house right. You know i remember. There is an episode of sex in the city that i love so much. It was very funny. Where carrie bradshaw says that squirrels or essentially racks just in better costumes. That's how the fuck. I feel about the democrats right now. Essentially many of those centrists right are just what republicans in different fucking clothing with different mantras. But they're doing the same type of underhanded gripping shit that republicans just due to your face right because they say their work is who gonna fuck and check me eight not a goddamn person because everybody is trying to get on or get off with money in their pockets in their packs right in their businesses. Or what have you. They could give a fuck about the rest of us and this is why i continue to say that revolution to me. Looks like the only direction that we are headed in. Because i'm not quite sure how you continue to try and reform system that was based on grip and racists capitalism. I don't know coming up next. "Life is so precious and all given to you by the great lord above fucking hypocrisy and i want democrats to call out the hypocrisy on a day to day basis and frankly i want these parents right that are concerned about the well of the wellbeing of their kids to sue the fucking school district because if i were a parent at kinder elementary school i would absolutely be suing the school district. Because how are you not sending emails or text messages or making phone calls to let people know exactly what is happening right. Why are they finding out. Why are these parents finding out through the grapevine like a game of telephone with other parents to spine out whether or not. They're safe and mind you. These kids are coming. Home some of these kids live in intergenerational homes right so what does that mean about the safety of the adults in those homes it is. We are at an infuriating place when it comes to cove in nineteen. Because what i fear and what i continue to say what our friend dr. Jonathan metal tells us. Is that the middle of october is going to tell us a whole fucking lot about what it is. That american school systems are doing completely and totally wrong folks. coming up. Right here in times square you know. Yesterday i found myself going to bed and feeling extraordinarily exhausted and i thought that it was kind of initially vacation hangover right like when you come back from vacation. It's kind of really difficult to get back into the swing of things you feel a little sluggish but now that was not the case. Yesterday i found myself laying in my bed at around eight pm. I wasn't necessarily tired like i wanted to go to sleep. I was just done. I was done with the day i was done with america. I was done with watching the news. I was done with being on twitter and hearing about everything that was wrong and my body was aching and exhausted and just spent. And what i find about that is folks what is happening. Right now is going to begin to manifest itself physically spiritually and emotionally. You may find yourself for no reason bursting into tears or just wanting to take a nap. And what i want to encourage you at the beginning of this show is listen to your body. Listen to yourself because your body is telling you what it is that it needs and right now what. We all need in ways. That i would never have anticipated is rest because i believe that. What republicans and the radical rights and these white evangelical christians which are just under this whole big banner of authoritarian and fascist. What they are trying to do is wear us down. Would they are working to do. Is where us out and make us feel like we have no options that there is nothing that we can do that we feel helpless in that all we want to do is check out now. What i'm offering here is not just saying to check out and never check back in but these moments of angst of anxiety of stress of grief require rest so that we can restore ourselves. We can recharge so that we can lift our heads out of the sand and continue to march forward because the journey that we are on is a long one. It's actually a marathon. We are in a marathon where the baton has been handed over generation after generation after generation. And now it's our turn at the beginning of this year. I found myself really troubled with the fact that it hit.

You know i wanted do the moment to talk about labor day and the fact that we as a nation just celebrated or honoured are recognized this holiday and the fact that it's supposed to what have us put is on and give respect to workers right. All of us are workers. If you are employed you are a worker that helps this country in this economy. Move and i think that what is often lost on all of us. And what is shifting right now in a lot of industries and in a lot of spaces is the power that workers have now. When this country was moving through its industrial age we needed to create unions and hr and different types of protections for workers because without these protections without government intervention without agencies that would look after the safety in the well-being for workers. You have what is pretty much going on with amazon around the country. You have people unable to take bathroom breaks. There's right now. A piece of legislation that is going through the california legislature to ensure that production numbers remain reasonable at the behemoths like amazon. So that workers who are on the line putting together your packages our packages that we so desperately need can take a bathroom break. It's crazy to me to think that in the twenty first century after we have gone through so many different points of work revolution and expansion in this country that in so many ways we are going back to the beginning whether it is with fucking abortion whether it's with voter suppression but it seems like america's civil rights and liberties and workers rights and liberties and women's rights and liberties are somehow boom haranguing back pre industrial times right where we are needing to make explicitly clear the protections that workers are guaranteed the protections that women are guaranteed and we have a very tepid government right now..

Which is a organization that is working to train a pipeline of democrats in order to be able to run for office to run campaigns to do all of the things that we need them to do. In order to battle against republicans. You know i feel like republicans do a much better job of building a pipeline and let me be clear. Their candidates are crap. So it's it's amazing to me that they have such an incredible infrastructure that they're folks can rely on churning out candidates after candidates talk to us about arena. And why you think that it was important to get to this place. Why is it important for us to have this kind of organization in infrastructure. We have a few. What is it that makes this one different. Well daniel thank you so much for having me here today to talk about these really important issues. So arenas and organization whose mission is to convene train and support the next generation of democratic candidates and campaign staff and we were born out of the two thousand sixteen election but also out of a realization of precisely what you're pointing out which is that. Republicans for decades have invested in infrastructure in thirty infrastructure in organizing infrastructure infrastructure. That is enduring. Year-over-year cycle over cycle Democrats simply have not on our side in some ways. We focused on candidates on wanting really charismatic. People for office. Unbe candidate don't win elections on their own. They require released. Strong robust well-trained teams around them and teams who represent the diversity of the country and the communities that they are running to represent and so arena exists really to try to fill that gap on the democratic side. And we do it through four different ways. We do it. By running a training programs unliked program called arena academy which trains individuals how to be campaign staff how to run campaigns everything from being a campaign manager doing data digital communications fundraising. We have a career team that works to place everyone. We've trained on a campaign or working with the democratic or progressive organization. And then make sure that those people stay in the business cycle over cycle year-over-year. We've got a suite of free. Downloadable tools are arena toolbox so that candidates and campaign staff can have the knowledge that for so long was held by an exclusive handful of people beyond a mostly white men who'd worked in politics for some time and then on top of all of that infrastructure building work we also support candidates financially and by providing them with staff and the kind of candidates that arena supports. Are those who are bringing new fresh voices to the party. New perspectives who are really running on premise of generational change and making our party in our politics more reflective the country. As a whole i love all of the all of the different parts that arena brings to the table and i will wanna talk for a minute. You know particularly about campaign staff and why that's important. I think for two too long. We rely on passion right to get people interested in wanting to work on campaigns. It's usually younger folks right. That have the passion. Have the energy you know or going to live on the road up pre kobe. That was. That was the case in terms of campaigning. How do you get people interested. How do you draw people in to say we need you because when folks think about you know i get asked the question all the time. Danielle what can i do right like. We're losing. What can i do and i tell them volunteer. I say donate you. It depends on your capacity so for those people that say. What can i do and they wanna do more than just volunteer. They wanna do more than just write a check. How do you connect those folks to these campaigns yet. What what you're saying is is so right because like i said before campaigns don't just run themselves at and i know this firsthand. I was a candidate for congress in twenty eighteen and i entered that race with with a ton of passion a ton of desire to serve my community but no understanding of the mechanics of running a campaign in really relied on the team that i was able to build around me. But it was hard to recruit that staff and it was doubly hard to recruit a staff that i wanted to be diverse. And i wanted to be gender-balanced that i wanted to have bypass representation that i wanted to have lgbtq representation because the the simple fact is it's been really hard to break into to politics. You mentioned that you've encourage people to volunteer. And i think i've heard problem. Is that you know. Political engagement working in politics has been thought of as a volunteer job to in that. By definition that makes it a job for those individuals who can afford to work for free. Yup at arena. We're trying to aband- that because we say politics actually needs to be a professional career and it needs to be accessible to everyone that the democratic party is trying to serve which means it needs recruit more people of color we need to recruit more working class individuals. We need to make up politics A career in which you can earn a living wage to to draw the kind of talent that you you want to bring to the table in order to win and so what. I would encourage anyone. Who's motivated who wants to be really substantive you think about going to an arena academies spending five days and learning what it really takes to to run a campaign we make. A point of making sure that scholarships are available to. Everyone needs them. So you're going to not be paying adine if you can't afford to pay that tuition for training and we worked very hard.

Let's just say this things are not going well in afghanistan. They have not been going well for the last several weeks. Since the biden and harrison ministration announced that they would be withdrawing all troops from the region after twenty two years of being involved in a civil war and in a conflict where we thought that the united states was building a democratic infrastructure to help the people of afghanistan. Well we were receiving reports that there was going to be considerable attacks happening outside of the capital of kabul at the airport where there were warnings that went out not just from the united states but from the uk as well to their citizens in the region to move away from the airports because they were very concerned that the security threats that they were receiving were going to actually come to fruition well lo and behold sadly they have with reports of multiple military folks being killed because that is where they were stationed outside of the airport and then also there were apparently suicide bomber attacks. That happened at a nearby hotel as well folks when you see. The pitcher is coming out of s. ghanistan heartbreak doesn't begin to really convey. What is transpiring in this region of the world and you know. There are several military folks throughout the years that i've had on various shows that i have hosted and to follow them now on social media and his just see how exasperated they are by the fact that they lost friends right people lost lives. They lost limbs in order to secure this country and at the end of the day the united states really did not have a plan for entry and they sure as fuck did not have a solid plan for exit. And you know. I said this earlier in the week that congresswoman barbara lee was the only the singular person member of congress to vote against going to afghanistan. Because she said why. Are we going to a place where we have no clear path out and don't really know what we are going there for and i find when i talk and i'm not a foreign affairs expert and i make that very very clear but i am a person that has enough information and research and talked to enough people to have a clear eyed opinion of the way in which the united states goes around the world and big foot's in other countries creating these terror vacuums when they decide to withdraw. And that's exactly what is happening in afghanistan. We're in conversation with the taliban for fuck sake right. And assuming that we're taking a terrorist organization on their word about what they are going to do once..

"So what does body language tell us. What what is it. We can decipher or not decipher. What specifically does it do. Well in my job is interrogator. I use it and attack. Full sense where i will. I'll ask questions. I know the answers to. And i'll see how that person reacts to those questions that i know they know the answers to and then i'll have questions that i know. They don't know the answers to questions. All about places i would make up even as i'm talking to them and we're getting ready to get started. I spent ten or fifteen minutes just talking to them and you get what's called a baseline when they're not nervous not being put on the spot and you see that you remember all the things how they acted when you ask them questions that you know they knew the answer to and they answered correctly and the ones you knew they didn't know the answer to and you you keep that in mind as a baseline for the way they behaved. Then when you get to the point where you're talking about what they're supposedly what they've supposedly done what they're suspected of doing as you speak with them then you can see how their body language changes. They may do things to to guard themselves. They may bring their their arms in closer to their chest for example. And that's what your brain does what it feels threatened. It'll it starts guard near your lungs and your heart and your stomach or they may be using. Water called adapters. At adapters things. These little repetitive movements people make that get rid of that built up stress tension or energy from the questioning is. They're trying as their thinking. Is there as they begin to worry about. Something stress builds for example. They may start Shaking their foot on the jiggling there on the ground or they may start rubbing their arm or their hands or they may just a little bit star biting the side of their mouth. Those are the things that you see those. These repetitive pacifying behaviors. Those that you know that person is under stress. It doesn't mean they're lying. It doesn't mean they're telling the truth it just means there's an issue there. There are no absolutes in body language just because someone scratches there knows. It doesn't mean they're they're lying and it doesn't mean they're telling the truth and most of the time their noses i've i've trained federal judges who thought if you look up into the lapd you're not telling the truth and we all know from studies now. That's not true at all not even a little

Bunker folks this has been one of the most obscene news cycles. I have seen in quite some time. And i will say this. Why is it obscene. Will one you know. I have been getting some pushback on social media after the announcement of new york governor cuomo resigning in two weeks he no longer be governor of new york. He had finally succumbed to the pressure. Placed on him by the democrats In new york and across the board. I knew once biden had weighed in on the issue that he was going to their for resign. And here's my issue with this. And i said this on social media and people are like oh my god like clearly your four a sexual harassment and assault of women. No the fuck. I am not but what i did say is this democrats always resign. Always we go after our own harder than we do our opponents we had a rapist as president of the united states and another one on the supreme court. Nothing ever happens to republicans. Nothing and the pushback. That i'm getting is a lot where folks are just you know well. We have higher standards than we have morals. I don't think that people fucking get the fact that you cannot have a democracy that is supposed to have a strong two party system and only have one party that goes after their own and each their young as opposed to turning on the hoses right on the republican fucking party and am. I saying that cuomo should not have resigned absolutely not but i'm saying where the fuck is the energy for matt gaetz. Where's the energy. For the trump investigation and indictments rolling down on him on clark on bar on sessions right like where the fuck is that energy you know. And it's just. It's infuriating to me that we will go after people within our own party with fury an energy that we do not give people who frankly tried to have their fucking colleagues killed in the septa in the january insurrection..

Dancing to the Cup

"A trainer partying like it's nineteen ninety one eight bolt she's got a two and a half lake lead dawn the destroyer next toward the inside what over with Mark Holiday from blue devils been a client of mine for years and we just try to make a game plan where we figured we'd cut it back and trying to make her a champion in the sprint division just seemed like chasing midnight these you might be a tough ordeal for her we had always Kinda were skeptical about how far she wanted to go even though she had won the Royal Delta ongoing amount sixteenth earl the year before last when she was second in the gopher one going mile just seemed like a good plan to just regroup she got a little light after the midnight race to wait for the Ballerina and try to win that game one which turned out great and then it's actually not ten weeks I was wrestling with that but I decided to go ahead and run the gallant bloom on September twenty second I got the I put she also won so now I got the two races back since the Phipps and I'm sitting ready to go five and a half weeks into the British top actually speaking of midnight zoo you know we mentioned in our open that your family has a history of running a really good horse against a potential legend for speaking about your grandfather Pancho Martin who had oh really good three year old named Sham back nineteen seventy-three but that was not the right year to have a really good three-year-old how much did that enter your mind when you decided to shorten up come down instead of knocking heads with midnight bees again I never really think about things in the past I mean I know my grandfather was a great trainer and that was a great horse and he ran against probably one of the greatest sources that ever lived but I just kind of try to do my own thing just worry about my horse and we're just trying to make the best game plan to give her a chance of success and to win a grade one and we just thought that Mitt I tease you and a late and some of the older fillies like a really strong division not that the sprint division having to run against co Pepsi the test and some other great vilis it's not it's not going to be easy but we just all got together and we just talked about cutting her back you know she had been brilliant in the distaff going seventy eight just started give us a chance to make regret one winter which has been always the goal 'cause we always believed in our hearts that she had that kind of brilliant ability in that kind of talent and they just that's just the way just turned out for us the time you know we were we were always debating you know what her best distances and this race was great and up to a mile it seemed like up to a one turn would be her game really oh by the way your grandfather portrayed as something of a foolish villain in the movie secretariat with Diane Lane and John Malkovich I know 'cause I was there for some of the filming of the scenes it didn't mention in the movie that he led the trainer standings in New York for ten straight years and entered the hall of fame in Nineteen eighty-one what did you think of his portrayal by Nestor Serrano I thought it was an interesting movie to say the least I brought him to see it and obviously he wasn't too pleased wasn't an accurate portrayal anybody that knows my grandfather knows that he was a gentleman and a lot of those things never happened with him screaming anybody I think he said he met Mrs Tweedy used to call her by her maiden name the day of the Derby she said hi Mr Martin can I say hi to sham and wish you luck inch and he took her over to t- his horse and exchange pleasantries and they wished each other luck and that was about the extent of his interaction with petty Chinnery so he thought it was quite amusing but like I explained to him it's Disney and somebody has to be the villain and they chose you and he said to me you know he was about eighty six years old and he said is there anything I can do I said well if you still have about twenty unless you could sue Disney but other than that just sit back and enjoy the movie so I don't think he really enjoyed the movie too much but it is what it is he had a great horse and if it wasn't for secretary how people theorize you know he broke the record in defeat and the Derby and preakness and maybe could be the triple crown winner he got hurt chasing him in the Belmont and then he still was syndicated for two and a half million in dollars which wasn't too shabby back in nineteen seventy three was a great horse in a great story and you know it's like having you know going up against Michael Jordan and a championship game and scoring eighty and Jordan's going one hundred and just coming up a little short trainer Carlos Martin joining us here on in the gate will send out come dancing in the Breeders Cup Filly Mayor Sprint you obviously come from a family of six zestful trainers including your Dad Jose who trained groovy I mean this is a business built on pedigrees so because of that I would think clients would have come flocking so you what made it takes so long for you to get back to this top level of competition I'm not sure I think we had a little rough patch with Mr Laser was my main client and backwards my dad got sick in two thousand six I had the the cancer Starting two thousand and two and then I unfortunately lost him in two thousand six we always had a close working relationship with Mr Lewis on and I kinda got comfortable in the state of being kind of a private trainer for him until he passed away about eight years ago and you know people sometimes they see you with one outfit and you know there was a lot if I think maybe just thought that was just him and me I was beholden to him and a lot of ways you know he was like a mentor to me with my father my grandfather of course and I think that kind of turns people off you know I had kind of a private job with him until he passed in two thousand eleven pretty much you know so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it I know when when he passed away it was quite an awakening to be a public trainer again and start almost from scratch about seven years ago and I'm so grateful that Mark Blue Devil and a couple of other clients like Matt Scherer on Mr and Mrs Collins a really good team now some really great people that have passion for the sport and really take the Horse I they're kind of the owners I have now say a little bit of a throwback because they really art patient with me as far as they want the best for the horse and I know there's a lot of pressure to do things right now especially when you spend a lot of money for but I'm very fortunate and blessed able to get back on our feet we went down from forty horses when Mr Lizard passed away in two thousand eleven to probably about five horses so we've called our way back and you know about the opportunity to win it Breeders Cup would be really really sensational way to finish the year and oblique grew almost to two million earnings for this year with a relatively small stable of twenty five sources I think he's a good accomplishment so I'm happy where I'm
