"You don't need to convince them if anything because you're not doing anything and if you're a red sox fan of course you're deriving satisfaction precisely from the cameraderie you have with like minded people as opposed to reaching out to people who might actually be outside the echo chamber. That's right. I love being red sox fan and i as i say in the book i live. Right near fenway park. I've gone to fenway park and taking my children there and the whole the whole park at fenway will swiss chant yankee suck yankee suck over and over again. They've done it for decades now and it's all kind of a joke because the stakes are low. We don't really hate those people who are the yankees fans or the yankees players. It's a game and it's fun to be part of it for a lot of people. So what explains the fact that in politics people don't think of it as being fun. I mean if you're a democrat and using republicans are terrible or your republican anything. Democrats at terrible. You don't think of it as a as a game. You think of it as being deadly serious is that political hobby is to what's political hobby. Ism is is not whether you think is deadly serious or not. It's whether the emotion is the ended itself or a means to an end so in shortcut politics in hobby. Ism emotion is the goal. It makes you feel connected to something without doing anything yourself. it makes me feel. I am part of this emotional high. Or i am part of the sad point. There's low point. Even though. I'm not doing anything i'm just following it. But the emotion is the connection and of course we have a whole media apparatus and and social media apprentice to make us feel those emotions but in real politics anger righteous anger and emotion are something you leverage into action. If there's no second step there you might feel like you're feeling political and partisan thoughts but you're not channeling them effectively into anything else. So i want to examine your lodged evidence for these claims. And i want to start with a revealing store. You tell about two elections in your home state of massachusetts. The i was in two thousand eight and it featured barack obama running for president and the second fourteen months later featured a special election for a senate seat that had big implications for the balance of power in the senate. Tell me what happened in those two races so in two thousand eight massachusetts massachusetts blue state. There was never going to be a question of who was going to win the election. Between barack obama and john mccain nevertheless a lot of people are active and a lot of people voted. We project that senator obama will carry the state of massachusetts very high turnout in massachusetts like in the rest of the country for this presidential election. That in massachusetts wasn't a close call a few months later. The democrats have control of the house. They've control of the senate with sixty seats which was important for the filibuster and they have control of the white house but now it's not so exciting and there's a senate race that comes a special senate race to replace the seat that ted kennedy held he. He passed away and the seat was between scott brown. Republican and martha coakley the democrat. Now here massachusetts had a chance to really leverage. It's excitement for voting for something that really matter. Now massachusetts really mattered because this turned out to be a close election and the democrats control of sixty seats in the senate was on the line. What happened democrats. Hold a three to one advantage over. Republicans in the state but the gop candidate scott brown has waged an energetic campaign. And he's polling well against the democrat attorney general martha coakley from the landslide massachusetts election for barack obama to the really important senate election turnout dropped precipitously and especially dropped in highly democratic areas so when there was a really a moment for democrats in massachusetts to say you know what even though politics right now maybe as down for the democrats maybe the candidate for our senate seat is not as exciting as barack obama. We're gonna come through because we really care about holding power instead. They sat at home. The people of massachusetts elected to me as your next united states. Senator scott brown won that election. And so if you're only willing to vote when there's a celebrity or someone who really is drawing you in to the excitement than you know. You're going to not do so well in the down times when the chips are down for your party you know. The candidates aren't as exciting but the policy matters just as much. There's another story you tell about massachusetts and this one took place in two thousand nineteen democrats. Ask students to go up to new hampshire to canvas or even just to canvas locally and on another occasion. The students were asked if they wanted to take a road trip to me. Democratic presidential candidate. Pete buddha judge. What happened in each case. Yes so the democrats at my college campus at tufts. They do some events on campus but they try really hard to get students to come with them to canvas in new hampshire and the students told them you know. It's just too far away. We can't go to new hampshire. We have classes we have stuff to do and so in the twenty eighteen election. They never got more than seven students to get in the car to new hampshire. Which by the way is like an hour away To canvas and then the story goes that there was a a pete buddha digit event in manchester new hampshire and so the the students said okay. Well you know do they wanna come up to To manchester to meet people edge. We can take a selfie with imposed on instagram and the student democratic group could not find enough cars to accommodate all of the tough students who wanted to go and take a selfie with with people to judge so perhaps the most elementary difference between those who think of politics is a means to power as a means to effect policy and those who think of it as an entertaining diversion is whether people show up to vote. I understand that you've run surveys. Where you ask people whether they voted. And then you compare what they tell you to records showing whether the actually voted. What do you find so a lot of people like almost half sometimes of confirmed non voters that is people who the public record shows. They did not vote about half of them sometimes. Say say they voted even when they didn't and when a colleague and i tried to figure out who are the kinds of people that lie about voting we discovered essentially college educated news followers. Lie a lot when they don't vote. They say they voted anyway. Another piece of evidence you have about the rise of political hobby is Is a decline an interest in any election that is not about national issues or national candidates. Can you talk about this for a moment How has interest in local elections like mirror racist for example how that changed in recent years even as people have paid increasingly close attention to what's happening on the national stage so a big part of the story has got to be the media. The media landscape has dramatically different. There's a lot Fewer resources in local news and local newspapers declining rates of of engagement with even tv local news. And there's a question about whether that's you know how the supply and demand chain the cause and effect relationship between interest and local news and and availability of local news. But what's happened is that we have very very few people voting locally and taking interest in what's happening in state and local politics and so you have people say on the left to say i really care about the environment or a really care about racial equality but i'm not gonna pay attention to the ways. My state or city might work on those issues. I'm not going to apply any pressure to my state legislator to work on those issues because what's happening at the state and local levels kinda boring and on the right you see the same thing but but not as much on the left. There's been this long history of particularly the the kind of the well. Educated wing of the democratic party poo. Pooing what's happening at the state and local levels eight now all.

"When i last i was speaking to you We were awaiting the results of the recall. Vote of democratic governor gavin newsom of california and there was some real nervousness among democrats and democratic strategists. now i think it was not entirely unjustified. The poll showed that newsom was going to win the recall effort most likely but there was this healthy dose of what we might call historically based apprehension in the air because of what happened the last time we had a first term democratic president in office i was there i covered it. You probably remember to. In barack obama's first year in office we to seismic elections that harkened as warning signs of what was to come american politics. Both of them were the precursor or part of the tea party movement. The right word swing of the electorate that leads to two thousand ten midterms and the redistricting and the intense backlash politics. That would go on in many ways to shape the republican party. The first of those big sort of bombshell elections was in the very blue state of new jersey. Right barack obama won that state in two thousand eight by more than fifteen points and the very next year. Ten months as the obama administration. Republican chris christie prevailed over the incumbent democratic governor jon corzine and at the time a lot of people understandably and probably rightly saw that as a direct blow to obamacare new jersey. Voters also elected a republican governor last night republican chris christie unseated democratic incumbent. Jon corzine some gop members. Say the results show that voters are fed up with the obama administration agenda. But the white house says the election was not a referendum on the president or his policies at the tough economy made this election difficult. Probably some truth in both of those interpretations but the even greater blow to democrats came that next january and that came with a special election for ted kennedy senate following his death in august of two thousand nine. Now this was massachusetts. Right it's a state that similar to california in how dominated by the democratic party it is and in the perception that it's an enduring democratic stronghold and ted kennedy was basically the of patriarch of the democratic party. Right i mean the the the last living syon of those brothers and it made the republicans. Scott brown's victory over the democrat martha coakley even more earthshattering development. That may affect this nation's foreign policy healthcare policy perhaps the remainder of the obama presidency chuck hard to believe happens on the one year anniversary of the swearing in of president obama. It's almost like a hollywood plot. Twists martha coakley may someday be simply a footnote in history but in washington. Today for the president. She stood for a symbol of voter anger. Scott brown winning. Ted kennedy's liberal massachusetts senate seat in january two thousand ten before the midterms november was seen. Not only as a huge upset but also again a referendum on president obama's agenda. As was. chris christie's win the year before that. Now it's ten years later. Partisanship has become more predictive in american politics right especially as america's become more and more polarized but nothing is preordained. In politics and crazy things happen opinions change. And there's this very well known model of this that imagines public opinion like a thermostat right when the public perceives. The temperature is being too hot. The government's doing too much spending or activism. They tell politicians to turn it down by herself. It seems to cold public is always moving in opposition to the party. That's controlling the white house and this is a fairly reliable phenomenon. We saw this happen and barack obama's first term a part of that produced the tea party. Those huge midterm victories. We saw it happen to donald trump right when democrats swept back. Control the house in two thousand eighteen. And because this is a reliable thing. I mean you even happen to like fdr lbj right. There is some evidence has happened. A bit with joe biden but if we follow the historical precedent here the reason that there was this kind of era vang's -iety and view last night's recall election in california both as a referendum on the first eight months administration and is the first big test of the enduring effects of trumpism without trump on the ballot. The results are not even close. I mean given this phenomenon. I was just talking about thermostatic public opinion. It's called and political science. The fact that we are eighteen months to pandemic we hope would be left behind by now. I personally as i was reading the tea leaves on this and covering this race was fully prepared for less decisive outcome. I mean it seemed pretty clear from the polling that newsom would prevail in the recall he would not be recalled but it really wouldn't have been surprising if he won by ten or twelve points but it turned out to be much much more unambiguous it was resounding whooping but kicking blowout the republican party and the recall effort were destroyed repudiated humiliated as a result. Currently dan voters had governor. Some should not be removed by martin a more than twenty seven points. Sixty three point nine two thirty six point one. Now that is what seventy percent the vote. In so as we get the rest we think that marjorie narrow bit based on who voted win but remember the benchmark here is gathered newsome's initial election in two thousand eighteen again. That was a strong year for democrats and in that year. New someone but at twenty three point margin so to go through the first two and a half years ministration by the way during a once in a century pandemic a huge recession right and to have lost. No support is basically the opposite of what we saw happen in two thousand nine with those chris. Christie and scott brown elections and those so-called referendums on barack obama gavin nuisance recall results or referendum. Biden is very good for the president. Get this election was a referendum on trumpism and newsome and democrats tried to make it into one..

Europe, Manny. Welcome. How are you tonight? Hi there, Dan. Yeah, Cousin me any again. I feel bad. Feel bad for these guys. Nothing's lost during we get hit with these alternate every time and I'm making. It's a shame when the globe still kind of like the guy in the attic. I didn't know who is being chased by just recently and I know this case from a long time ago where the guy turned around fires like 15 to 10 or 15 shots. Because he didn't know who was chasing him. He No. He knew exactly who was chasing question. I'm sorry. He's off the phone now, but I had one question for him. Sure, Good thankful. One. That was Jesus. I really thank them guys, for sure following their pride when they hold up the right hand and say, Yeah, I'll do this. You know, Larry, I'm sure I'm sure is listening, man. And I'm sure that he that he heard you know Europe and Gloucester and hopefully you don't have too many scenes like this. But this judge, she has made some strange decisions. She ended up Ah, and she she was looking at the partners deal, and she had to actually apologise to, um former attorney General Martha Coakley, who she I guess eviscerated in court. Uh, then, um, Then she had another case where she dismisses a Mattapan murder conviction. Against the guy who basically shot and killed Guy on Newbury Street Back in 1971. I happen to remember that case. Um, the case was the case of a fella named John Lobb Anara. And he had just grabbed. He had just passed the bar in October of 1971 and had had been out celebrating with some friends. Went, um to his car got into his car and somehow some way this guy, I guess who shot him and killed him thought he had been disrespected by him. And so he's been in jail for a long time. My next question was for the policemen there by returning there. Why? He says union allow these judges to get away with it. Well, the problem is that in Massachusetts and you know again, you do you do lawyer ringing? You do all that stuff. Why does it his union? Why don't tell union I'm great friends. These castaway now a democratic judge, But there's some Democrats. I can talk to that and nice. He's passed away now. Well, no, no, don't give me my voice because the throat cancer so Italian part No, There were no question What the man Dan White on his union. Have any link any ability to deal with these Um, walk judges. Here's the deal, man. He just see, you know, First of all, there are great judges and good judges. Most judges are very good judges and a lot of them. They're all appointed in Massachusetts. By the governor, and this particular judge was first appointed to the bench by Bill Well, the Republican And she was promoted to superior Court by um Jane Swift. A lieutenant, a lieutenant governor who was an acting in, uh she's a Republican. This judge is appointed initially by wealth and then secondarily by By Jane Swift. So this is not a Democratic judge. Um and look, I know a lot of judges who are great judges, but but this particular judge I followed her career pretty closely and she's made some very questionable decisions. Now. That's what judges can do in Massachusetts because they were appointed for life. Um, they can only be removed not because they're bad judges, but because they do something illegal. I'm not trying to speak on behalf of the patrolman manned the guy or the woman. Yeah, I'm trying to speak on behalf of their union. Their union have anything? Well, The only thing that the only thing the union can do is endorse, uh, political candidates, Uh and and in this case, whoever is the governor, so when someone runs for governor, and they say, Well, I'm going to appoint really tough Laura no to judges, and they appoint people like Janet Sanders. Well, yeah, it's not a good result Down 300 down on lesbian now. Yeah, That's what he said. So that makes it tough. And of course, there's there's more overtime anyway. Hey, I gotta scoot here. Manny. I appreciate your call. Hope you feel better. How you doing pretty well. Or, you know you sound good. I know. You said that you're dealing with some throat issues. "Well you know. I think it's really important for people to know to as you pointed out in the motion that most people have already served their time. But as you said these convictions on their records can hurt their ability to get a job or go to college or Secure housing and government benefits cetera et cetera et cetera. So it's not as if these people have not done their time whether or not they were legitimately convicted or not because of this malfeasance at the lab. Yes i it's. It's no different to me honestly. That came out of the hinton. We have wasted tens of millions of dollars thousands and thousands of men and women hours on this and had we simply done what was right. "Run or not really to that point as you say. She does have a lot of name recognition national reputation. She's battled the trump administration nationally. She's known for her battle with corporations. Like purdue pharma if she gets in. What does that do do. Other candidates have a shot of their democratic's candidates have a shot. If she's in well anything. Of course it's possible politics. It seems especially these days. I think you're right. I mean he would be the front runner but look as we know being expected to win. Doesn't mean you automatically win. I mean just ask. President hillary clinton or governor martha coakley about that right. I mean more healey would be the front runner and yet you know the other candidates so that's a given but the other candidates would have a shot against her and i think it would be a mistake to assume otherwise so you have noted that governor baker hasn't said yet if he will pursue a third term at this point is he sort of stalking horse. Though is he. Does he remain the man to beat fellow. Yeah there's no question about that. i mean. Baker is well funded. He remains very popular in the state. He's figured out that secret sauce of running and winning as a republican in deep blue massachusetts and You know it's always interesting to note. He's more popular among democrats than he is among republicans but among the things that are interesting about daniel allen's candidacy is that she's a black woman at a time of historic change in boston. We're about to elect the first person of color to the mayor's office This would follow on presley's election as the first woman of color to represent massachusetts in congress so with regard to her campaign for governor allen. Told me today that it's taken more than two hundred years but we might actually be at a point where leadership can be open to everybody. So that's going to be a big theme in her races. Well so let's jump ahead to the massachusetts. Gop because they're having it appears a bit of an identity crisis of their own right now and it seems that one factor at the core of that upheaval is governor baker and whether the trump wing of the state party is behind him. Is that fair to say. And what does that do to impact bakers chances. Should he choose to run for another term. Yeah it's an interesting question. I mean clearly. The the mass. Gop is at war with itself baker's the moderate he never embraced donald trump. So he doesn't have a lot of support from that hard right wing of the republican party while the state republican party represents that hard right trump base and that includes lots of people who don't embrace baker but baker's been able to more than make up for that by attracting moderate republicans and lots of democrats. So i guess. The risk for baker is that if he faces a strong challenge from a strong democrat. He could lose enough of that democratic support to put him in danger. And that's one of the big fascinating question that we're going to be following in.

daniel allen congress donald trump republican party boston Baker today more than two hundred years hillary clinton third term martha coakley allen one republicans democrat one factor republican President trump democrats
