"By my estimation, the best team in the game for the last decade, 89 years if you want to say it, and and yet no World Series Championship Postseason baseball, as we know is volatile. We're always surprised. The Dodgers surely did not go into the first round last year, expecting to be upset by the Nationals, but they were. I think you could never have enough quality pitching. I would say that maybe they could have afforded to get one more reliever. If not Lance Lynn. Of course, they did not do either of those things. Airplay off rotation should still be very good. Clayton Kershaw. I think this year has been better than I saw him last year. Walker Buehler is a clear number one for me. Dustin may has continued to evolve and I think is a really strong starter. But when you look at their rotation as great as our lineup has been Mookie Betts, certainly right there in the MVP conversation with hotties. I'm not sure they're going to enter if they faced the Padres, let's say now the Padres have Clevinger to go along with Dean Elson lament in exact Davies and Chris Paddock. I don't know. The Dodgers have a pronounced edge and rotation against the Padres, Maybe a slight one. Not a big one. I think Lance Lynn would have made a pretty significant difference. For the Dodgers, and I do think Jim. There is a legitimate chance The Dodgers will regret not having traded for Lance Lynn yesterday. Sean Morose is joining us. You know, John, when you talk about postseason volatility, especially this year, something else you touch, not the very top and I want to ask you about when you look the playoff format this year and the fact that eight teams from each Li will make it How different is the experience of being the number one seed in each league this year versus previous years? Well, it's a great point, Jim. And first of all, we're not even sure where those games will be played. If MLB goes to a bubble format before The Post isn't even begins, then the home field advantage. Of course, As we already know no fans in the stands to begin with, so ah, lot of the advantage that used to come with being the number one overall seed. He's gone and oh, by the way, especially in the National League because of how fluid that league is toward the bottom. If you're the one seed If you're the Dodgers, more than likely you're going to face a team as the eighth season had to play tremendous baseball over the last 10 to 14 days season just to get in, and I'll tell you what Jim, the team they do not want to face if you gave him a truth serum. Cincinnati. Cincinnati has been underwhelming so far, but again, they've got Trevor Bauer study Gray and Luis Castillo, who I believe can throw pitches with anybody in that Dodger rotation, even on their best day. So I think that yes, the Dodgers still the favorite. I still have the one in the World Series. But I've got some concerns some legitimate concerns. Because of the path it's just going to be a more arduous journey to have to win a best of three series. Then when the best of five in the division series and then go through the CS in the World Series, That's a hard road. I think we'll see Jim and you know, Mother Coke favorite sport there in the National Hockey League. All the upsets we often see in the first round of that sport. I think we'll see a similar thing where the eighth seed in the NHL is always dangerous. We saw it last year with the ST Louis Blues. Those kinds of clubs that have to get in the very last minute are always playing at their peak. I believe the Dodger's first round opponents will be playing like that here in October, right there already in playoff mode. John Rosie's Joining US told me Follow up on one last time before I let you go this notion of where and how they play the postseason. There has been talk, John and you reference this About the post season, maybe being in a bubble or bubbles. What is your sense as to where things stand in that regard and what kind of impact would that have on the postseason? Well, George Sermon of the New York Post. Jim has reported that there was a proposal made from MLB to the union regarding the bubble. Now we don't know exactly what cities would be involved. Finally, but that this is something that is being discussed. The most notably the reports have been Texas and California being the two sites and and the idea is that both Areas will have multiple major league facilities to use. So Arlington in Houston in Texas, and then Dodgers, Angels and Padres ballparks in California, notably Rob Manford, the commissioner of baseball, told Bill Shaking of the time he wants to avoid a situation where the World Series will be played entirely at one stadium if that team is participating. So if the World Series was in California, for example, Jim, you might see a scenario where if the Dodgers or Padres are in it that the might play their games in Anaheim, and they would be the home team quote unquote in those games, So it's a really unique set of circumstances. I do believe that we will see a bubble at some point, and we've seen a success. Jim of the any shell, the N BA I think that for baseball, the most logical thing is you potentially even quarantine towards the end of the regular season at hotels as opposed to being at home, So that way you have a very small chance. You hope of any positive tests. Interrupting and disrupting the postseason bubbles work. We know this, John finally, you know, I spent a month this summer in Eagle River, Wisconsin, which was amazing. But there was this thing that I couldn't really describe or explain. I just had a feeling It was a good feeling, and I didn't know what it wass and then I think I figured it out. I had never been so close Brandy period of time to the U. P I think I was only about 120 miles from the U. P doesn't have that kind of reach. Isn't that big a thing. Ah, the U P is beautiful, Jim, Thanks for the question, And you would have been very close than to the hometown of Tom Izzo, Iron Mountain, Michigan, Right on the border there with constant and beautiful country. As you know, Jim, the breathing the air of this time of year to me. Nirvana is when you're in the summertime, and you just have to put on that sweatshirt. At nighttime, and you could walk around shorts and a sweatshirt. Beautiful evening. I want to go to the U P right now, Jim after you brought it up, man, John, I'm so glad you brought that thing about Tom Izzo. Like that's my guy. I'm a huge time is. Oh, God, This is big time Izo house, but I did not know that fun fact about him. I didn't know I was that close to him. I ride. He is right there. Basically right on the border, Wisconsin in Michigan there, Iron Mountain, of course, that he and Steve Mariucci teammate. Somebody's there at that at high school and then in northern Michigan University as well. So a great great story there And yes, the U. P has a great magnetism around it. Marquette counties. Beautiful. Next time you're in the area, Jim, let me know if there's a short drive their two beautiful Marquette County with the great hiking, beautiful water up there as well. I love that. I love all that now. Of course I know about Iron Mountain. I just didn't know that I was that close. John Marosi and I'll be network insider. "He joins us live at W. T. M. J. Adam it's so amazing in that the brewers in bud Seelig had fought for ever for five years to get that T. may happen it happens with a phone call and then they get all of what about a week to stage that first game at county stadium yeah look I think that's my favorite part about this story is that something that absolutely would not happen today because the location of for a long time and he oversaw expansion he oversaw Transjordan and it was also orchestrated and worked out and planned on missiles literally as you said a phone call one night he went for a walk the next morning April first nineteen seventy he reportedly Marquette county stadium he was the only employee of the blues and six days later they played a major league baseball game against the California angels so he will log a kind of a remarkable story and a reminder of how quickly things have changed in Major League Baseball in terms of again being so much more corporate ties and it was just you know nineteen seventy isn't that long ago but it was a long time in terms of the way the game is changed Adam what was the first thing that bugs you like had to accomplish your check off his list that next morning you know you talk about it in your piece MLB dot com the field workers at the stadium obviously traveling the team from Seattle to Milwaukee all that had to happen in a week but what was the first thing on his mind well I think it's sort of everything all at once he had to eat over the stadium manager county stadium but but but the league had brought in the Chicago White Sox at their condition games and there was a small grounds crew while working at that stadium manager William Anderson all he needed ticket takers ticket sellers picket Clinton's broadcasting he hired palm and all this happened you know lived in those couple of days they have to stock the concession stands and cold beer which is vital for a baseball game then I you know in talking about it was it was interesting the memories are certain difficult at this point because I think maybe understand this when so much is happening all at once those memories tend to get blurred over time and I think that's one of the difficulties in in terms of solving you know fifty problems in our standard long kind of happening at once so you know number one one of the first things was off to get the equipment truck to Milwaukee that stop in Utah I'm sure of whether to turn left to Seattle right along the customer walking in one of the first problems that had to be solved is what we do about uniforms and it was just a matter of simplicity and anti and that dictated they're gonna tear all pilots and soul blues on top of it and that is if you ever wondered why the blues colors are blue and yellow there's your answer remains the accent on the Seattle pilots uniforms both feeling really wanted navy blue and red slogans all beloved marquee braids and also the the old Milwaukee brewers are Borchert field news those calls but there's just simply no time for it so that it is why we have blue and yellow is the colour and marketers even a factor of bones six crazy days Tamil B. dot com's Adam McKelvey out with a new book called brewers at fifty joining us live on WTMJ on this the fiftieth anniversary of the phone call that let the world know or at least but see we know that the Seattle pilots were going to beat the Milwaukee Brewers but you find out that Bob euchre actually worked the switchboard in those early days well they're they're just trying to get every get everything done and Bobby occurred told me that some days he would come in and penny grant was a woman that worked at the bridge front desk for years and years and years he retired in the early two thousands after the club made the move the ball park but every now and then you would come in and really you know you wanted to get all you get a day's work out of the broadcasters we put you to work on the switchboard and ceiling says one day he was curious that ball you're cut off a conference call with the other owners so he would you know in truth bomb user fast he really did the job but you know he wasn't always certifications that Adam we'd be remiss if we didn't ask before we let you go what's your gut on what we might have baseball back it is really impossible to know because I think like any industry you know they are they are looking at world events and it's going to be dictated by world you have to balance and we can play baseball again the one thing I think people do need to understand this you can't just one day say okay it's safe to gather again let's begin the season tomorrow there is going to have to be some period the point of spring training in the first place is to get pictures ready for regular season baseball there's gonna have to be some sort of problems like that again in some fashion where how long is all a matter to be decided later step one and all now the situation needs to be safe for everybody the players the fans on and we sure are all looking forward to that day when I looked at him L. B. dot com seventy Kobe joining us live on WTMJ out with a new book brewers at fifty good luck with the book Adam and hope you're back to work soon yeah thank you very much and I appreciate it you bet seven fifty seven time now for business headlines sponsored by Waterstone bank a community partner for almost one hundred years soccer shot opens bidding for the first large construction contracts for its Lake Michigan drinking water system the start of construction bidding as a benchmark for the public works project that has been in progress for more than a decade Wisconsin state fair park and the Wisconsin center district could be used as alternate care facilities in response to.

"Hiring people up at the capitol. And so my father said we'll go see Louis romell. He's represents us from Adams journal and Marquette counties, and so I called up there to see if I could see Louis, and he wouldn't see me now that was a little strange, but I found out later he wouldn't see me because he was framed if he gave me a job I would run against them, which I did. So when when I couldn't get a job in the assembly, I went over to the Senate, and they're just Miller was the state Senator enrichment center, he knew my father. But he didn't know me, and he was sick. He was on his deathbed. But somehow somebody called him and said young Tommy Thompson the university student. We have some money to hire clerks under the Ford Foundation. And he would like to know if you would hire him, and he said sure s Allen Thompson, son. So I never met the man never got a chance to thank him. But he hired me. And so I was a clerk for Allen Busby. Who was a Senator from west Alice, and he was the last Republican elected out of west Allis. But he was I think I learned a lot from him. I also learned how to be bipartisan and make compromises, and he taught me a few things he says, Tommy two things. I'll tell you always read the builds and know, what's in them. More than anybody else, which I always did when I was in the assembly and governor and the second thing he says by stock and don't sell it just put them in the put them in. If you ever get any money by stock and put them in the top drawer. And he says I've done that. And I never sell and they said I've done very well. And he was quite wealthy. And then after about. Six months about a year. I was working in Harry, lavender was the sergeant alarms, and they had some extra money in the and then the Senate was going little bit longer during the days, and so sometimes at night sessions, and so Harry, LA Bander as John Gabel? Another student myself, if we would take over the job of running the Senate when he wasn't there from five to nine and run errands and do things ministerial tasks for the senators, and I jumped at the occasion because what we could do is we could work for four hours and study and get paid. If if the Senate wasn't in session, or if we didn't have anything to do. So it was a fantastic job. And but sometimes the Senate was in session, and this one night the Senate was in session. And when you when the Senate or the assembly goes on call, and they have a call of the Senator call the assembly means that every Senator. Later in every semi unless excused has got to come and vote. Whether it was a Senator by name a packing. My father who was a boxer. In his younger days, and he Paki liked to have a few snorts and that afternoon, he started snorting a little early and he was already in the park, and we knew where he was and so John Gabel? And I went over there to get them. And I'll Paki was in no mood to come back and vote, and we said, well, you have to come back and say, I'm not going. Well, finally, we convinced him to go. It was on the old part motor in the bar. Was there we got him out in Front Street and crossing crossing the street right there by the stop and go lines. And and is Senator McFarland decided when he was going to step on the on the curb to go into the capital, they thought maybe he should go back and have another drink. So he decided to turn on both John and me, and he took a started out here. But he was. So he had so many starts, and I'm that you could see a common, but he wanted to hit us so double up his fist and what like that. And and duct he swung at swaggie inducted. He went all the way around fell down on his back and hit his head. And. I thought he was really hurt, but you had enough alcohol item that it didn't a phase. And finally, we walk them up and got him up on his feet and tuck him in any voted, and then they Harry the Bander asked us to take him to his office where he slept it off. And you know today that would never happen. I mean, the the press would have picked it up and here are two Republican pages carry taking care, but Democrats Senator I mean, this would have made the capital times in the state journal and so on and so forth. But it was at that time. It was just a way to get things done. And it was funny. But it's part of part of what the book is about some of the stories. I'm talking too much. That's the way I go. He graduated in nineteen sixty six and are planning actually to join the Jag corps that flavor that fall. And you kinda got a free summer you decide to. I had three credits to go in law school and Jake Boisture. Does anybody remember professor j Boisture great guy on water law land rights, and I had to pick up three credits. And he took me under his wing. And he said he would give me an opportunity to write a story on water law, and and riparian ownership, and I get got the best Mark gotten law school, probably because he was helpful. But anyway, I was going to guys wouldn't give me the job. I announced that was gonna run against it. Because I wasn't going to go into into the air force J core until January. And so I decided, you know, my way of thinking was I didn't have a chance because this guy was in sixteen years. And so I decided that was going to run against him and for the state assembly, and and so I did. And announce now lure Mel. I didn't think I was very serious because I was still in law school, and I didn't move back home. And so he went to Alaska on a cruise. And so I graduated from law school got my three credits done, and it was the first week in August in the was the first it was the second week in September. When the primary was six weeks, and I didn't have any money. And so I borrowed five hundred bucks from the Bank of one hundred dollar car that had two hundred and twenty five thousand miles you can look through the floorboards and see see the street, and I ran on highway safety. Why? I don't know. But but I did. And and so then I went all over my father gave me ten bucks a day, five bucks for gas and five bucks. And so I would nobody an wasn't the district. Then it was counties. I had Adams junior and Marquette counties, and so I want all over at start out at seven o'clock in the morning. I was not married live with my parents. And so I'd go to all these small communities, and I learned early on that the town drunk was in the bar at eight o'clock in the morning, and I could go into the bar. Louis Catterson says go by that guy beer, he'll talk about you all day and. You can't do that today. But. Here's the town Draco Louis Qatar was a democrat. But he didn't like Louis remount. So he wanted to help me. And so he's just by very settled do a lot of good. So I go in. I bought him a beer, and and I heard later he says you should too. Two o'clock three o'clock when the bar was full. You should have been on here. Smarting young. Tommy Thompson came in what the whole bar beer. Tommy Thompson, former governor swimmer HHS secretary his book Tommy my journey. And so I then I then left the bar at nine o'clock. I didn't have a drink, of course. And then I go nobody ever on any doors back then and so Adams Juneau Marquette. I see my good friend Sam grasses here who ran against me. One time a good friend. He is a good friend, and I went door to door, and nobody else ever did this and I was scared to death. I I was frayed of speaking of introducing myself. But after a while, you know, you're not gonna enough doors and people say they liked you. They ask you questions, and you had to answer you to think on your free, which helped me a great deal. And so I went around and then I go to the businesses. Learn a story that I tell other young politicians don't wanna get elected. I went into this into the Chevrolet dealer, and I was talking to the owner waiting for the honor. And so I went in to meet the owner was Mr. Qatar another Qatar. No, this one was Freitag. Richard Friday, dick, fried keg, only on the Montella Chevrolet and Buick dealership. And I when I sat down his office across from just like like, you individual introduced myself and said I was running. I said I didn't have much money. But I got a lot of spirit get a lot of good ideas. And I'm for small businesses. And I'd like you to help me he said, you know, I've been supporting Louis Ramal all these years. He never comes in. You're the first guys come in to ask me for my vote. He said, I think I'm going to look for you. Mr frank. That's great. Thank you very much. And I walked out and less than three minutes. Mr. fry tag comes out chasing me down. And he said I decided to vote for you. And I said. I'm twenty three no money. I got the biggest coup in the world, Mr. Frank tag. Who is who is the best businessperson in Montella, go to support me? Now, he tells me he's not I said, well, what did I do what not supporting me? He says. Well, you're not very smart. I said why do you say that he says because I'm one individual? But I have forty five employs auto mechanics back in the back room. I got people working in the office. And I got people selling cars stop and ask for their vote from anyone in the forty five. How you gonna win? I said, I'm only one dollars forty five. You got to go back, and you got to make sure that you talked to everybody. And so it was a lesson learned several lessons. I go to the go to the bar really early. And by the by the town drunk, a beer, second, go and make sure you always go behind shake hands with everybody and the business, which I I started from that day forward, and they have always done it. Now, I'll tell you a story I was in Washington with George H W Bush staying overnight with him, and he taught me to his. One of his private clubs and. Fillon rest of the story. And we went down to eat. It was it was absolutely great. He was president here is sticking a young governor under his arm. He liked me before George W Bush got elected governor, I was his favorite governor. But but I went in and we had had lunch, and it was going to go to the club, which is a club. They have put up a w this running for president both the alfalfa ticket and some other ticket and George Bush, always launches and so fun organization. But anyway, he took me behind into the kitchen. Here's the here's the president United States taking him by the hand going into the kitchen, and he shook hands with everybody in there everybody that was serving everybody..

"Are you? What am I right here? Yup. Right there. I I just told them how hard I worked in. All the stuff. I did. But I I told everybody that Doug Moe is the best writer that anybody could ever have. He can put lipstick on an eight hundred pound Saul and make it look good. And that's what he did in this regard. And I, and I I wanted to tell you that apologized, but Doug does this when I was governor and secretary I didn't get a chance to go to many of my son and daughters, basketball, and football games is as always busy. And so today I went to floor. The Portage sorta Portage to see my grandson bland is last or grade school football game. And so I'm late, and I apologize. But I was doing a grandfather duties, and so I hope you'll understand. And we might have we might ended a few traffic. Saito's coming in here. But I got here at birth. Doug. Thank you God. No. I think by relatives. Did you? Encountered kinda. Yeah. He's my cousin. I think to start I think folks governor would would love to hear how a kid from Elroy got into politics, and I know that your father was county board and he used to have meetings on Fridays at his store, right? I know by Katherine Betty, and Tom Nola little Thompson, grocery store at the size of this room and two families that we we're open seven days a week and was very small, but it was sort of the center a political action for Elroy, Wisconsin. And so every Friday night couple of six packs of beer, and and a lot of cheese and a lotta raw hamburger, which was my father's favorite. They would stick around and talk about my father was chairman of the of the county committee for building roads and bridges and all the farmers and all the local Paul's who had come in. And and find out where the roads we're going to be built. So I I got to witness. My father was quite a negotiator trying to figure out where the roads and bridges were would go travel around and look at them on Sunday afternoons. So that's how I got it. I and I really got excited about the give it and take, but more importantly getting things done. And that's what I always tried to do when I was governor and secondary not look at what was partisan. What was good for me, politically, but how to get things done? And that's what I think Doug picked up when he was interviewing me, many hours, and you did a great job. And thank you. Doug, your guidance counselor. As I recall and try to talk you out of going to UW, Madison. William Claire was was the guidance counselor, and he he had played football at Platt Bill, and he tried to make sure that every graduate from Elroy went to university of Platt Ville, and I was no exception. And so he asked me where I was going to go. And I said I'm going to Maddison he said, well, it's too big for you. You're not smart enough. And and you can't play football there. And while you're going there, you go to platform, and he said, that's where you're supposed to go. And he was a very good guidance. Call a very good friend of myself as a teacher, and of course, to my parents, but he was very upset that I did not go to Ville. So when he wrote the history of Elroy. Instead of say that L had elected a governor. He said, he's never mentioned my name, and the whole thing all you mentioned with my father of what a great politician. My father was at the county border. And I always resented the fact that I didn't even make the cutting room floor was not even mentioned in the history of Elroy. So that's that's my story of Elry. Tommy Thompson being interviewed by his co author Doug Moe, the book tummy during school at at u w Madison you worked in the capital. For the sergeant of arms, and there was one story. You told about that. He would ask you to kind of take care of the senators and. When I when I. Was going through school. I didn't have any money. And so I heard that they were hiring people up at the capitol. And so my father said well, go see Louis melt. Represents us from Arabs journal and Marquette counties, and so I called up there to see if I could see Louis, and he wouldn't see me now that was a little strange, but I've found out later he wouldn't see me because he was framed if he gave me a job I would run against them, which I did. So when when I couldn't get a job in the assembly, I went over to the Senate, and they're just Miller was the state Senator from ritual center, he don't my father. But he didn't know me. And he was sick. He was on his deathbed. But somehow somebody called him and said young Tommy Thompson university student. We have some money to hire clerks under the Ford Foundation. And he would like to know if you'd hire him, and he said sure s Allen Thompson, son. So I never met the man never got a chance to thank him. But he hired me. And so I was a clerk for Allen Busby. Who is a Senator from Dallas. And he was the last Republican elected out of west Alice. But he was. Yeah. I think I learned a lot from him. I also learn how to be bipartisan and make compromises, and he taught me a few things he says, Tommy. Two things. I'll tell you always read the builds and know, what's in more than anybody else. Which I always did when I was in the assembly and governor and the second thing he says buy stock and don't sell them just put them in the put them in. If you ever get any money by stock and put them in the top drawer. And he says I I've done that. I never sell and they said I've done very well. And he was quite wealthy. And then after about. Six months about a year there. I was working in Harry, LA Banda was sergeant alarms, and they had some extra money, and they and then the Senate was going to little bit longer during the days, and so sometimes they had night sessions. And so Harry Lander as John Gabel? Another student myself, if we would take over the job of running the Senate when he wasn't there from five to nine and run errands and do things ministerial task for the senators, and I jumped at the occasion because what we could do is we could work for four hours and study and get paid. If if the Senate lesson in session, or if we didn't have anything to do. So it was a fantastic job. And but sometimes the Senate listen session, and this one night the Senate was in session. And when you when the Senate or the assembly goes on call, and they have a call of the Senate or call the assembly means that every Senator. In every semi unless excused has got to come and vote. Well, there was a Senator by name a pacu McFarland who was a boxer. In his younger days, and he Paki liked to have a few starts and that afternoon. He started snorting a little early and he was already in the park, and we knew where he was and so John Gabel? And I went over there to get them. And I'll now you was in no mood to come back and vote, and we said, well, you have to come back, and he said, I'm not going. Well, finally, we convinced him to go on. It was on the old part motor in dollar. The bar was there. We got him the Front Street and crossing crossing the street right there about to stop a goal lines and Packy McFarland decided when he was going to step on the on the curb to go into the capital, they thought maybe he should go back and have another drink. So he decided to turn on both John and me, and he took a starting to down here. But he was. So he had so many starts, and you could see a common, but he wanted to hit us you double up his fist and what like that. And and Duckie swung. It. The fact that he went all the way around fell down on his back and hit his head. And. I thought he was really hurt, but you had enough alcohol item that it didn't a phase of. And finally, we walk them up and got him up on his feet and took amend any voted. And then they Harry lavender s is take him to his office where he slept off. And today that would never happen. I mean, the the press would have picked it up, and here are two Republican pages carry taking care, but democrat Senator this would have made the capital times in the state journal and so on and so forth. But it was that that was just a way to get things done. And it was. Funny. But it's part of part of what the book is about some of the stories. I'm talking to. That's the way I go. You graduated in nineteen sixty six and are planning actually to join the Jag Klar that later that fall. And you got a free summer you decide to. I had three credits to go in law school and Jake butcher. Does anybody? Remember, professor, j boy shirt, great guy on water law and land rights, and I had to pick up three credits. And he took me under his wing. And he said he would give me an opportunity to write a story on water law and riparian ownership. And I got the best Mark gotten law school, probably because he was helpful. But anyway, I was going Louis romell the guys wouldn't give me the job. I announced that was going to run against it. Because I wasn't going to go into into the air force Jag corps until January. And so I decided, you know, my way of thinking was I didn't have a chance because this guy was in sixteen years. And so I decided that was going to run against him and for the state assembly, and and so I did. Announcing I'll lure a Mel. I didn't think I was very serious because I was still in law school, and I didn't move back home. And so he went to Alaska on a cruise. And so I graduated from law school got my three credits done, and it was the first week in August in the was the first it was second week in September. When the primary was I have six weeks. I didn't have any money. And so I borrowed five hundred bucks from the Bank of bought one hundred dollar car that had two hundred and twenty five thousand miles on it. You can look through the floorboards and see see the street, and I and highway safety. Why? I don't know. But but I did it. And so then I went all over my father gave me Ted bucks a day, five bucks for gas and five bucks. And so I would nobody an wasn't the district's then it was Coney I had Adam junior and Marquette counties, and so I want all over at start out at seven o'clock in the morning. Was not married live with my parents. And so I go all these small communities, and I learned early on that the town drunk was in the bar at eight o'clock in the morning, and I could go into the bar. Learned us in Mont. Louis says go by that guy had a beer he'll talk about you all day and. You can't do that today. But here's the here's the town Draco Louis Qatar was a democratic, but it didn't like Louis remote. So he wanted to help me. And so he's gorgeous by him a beer, you settle a lot of good. So I go in. I bought him a beer, and and I heard later he says two o'clock three o'clock when the bar was full. You should have been on here. Smarting young. Tommy Thompson came in the whole bar. Tommy Thompson, former governor former HHS secretary his book Tommy my journey of a lifetime. And so I then I then left the bar at nine o'clock..

"We help you today? Hello. Recently bought a home. We have about five or six us in the front. The previous owners had them kinda squared off. There are some dead branches in them were hoping if we trim out those branches we would get new growth is now a good time to do that. Or should we wait until spring? I would urge you to wait until winter or else in the spring. If we if we do too much, cutting shrubs at this time of year or trees, we're going to inspire them to develop or generate new growth and that new growth won't mature and time for winter. And so it will be subject to. Burn and different challenges. It will face going through a winter that being fully developed. Okay. So if they're, you know, they're maybe three feet high. Can we take them down like a third or a half? Or what would you recommend? If you do you want to get him to a little bit more of a natural shape in style. We do. Okay. So I would not take them down at all. In the winter. What I would do is go in and look for older larger diameter branches and cut them off down inside of the plant. And when you pull them out you're going to have holes. Okay. And in the springtime, the new growth will tend to grow into those holes because sunlight can get down into the plant. So when when people sheer a you, and you get all that growth up at the top and the center inside and download gets kind of naked. There's no foliage down there. The way to counter that is to go in and cut out four or five of the larger branches. Evenly throughout the whole troub- and then allow four or five areas for late to penetrate, and you will then begin to generate growth down inside of the plant. And then you just keep doing that every year and over the course of about three or four years, you're going to get more foliage down at the bottom in the middle and up on top. And it'll take on a little bit more of a natural appearance. But it is it is a process that will take three or four years. Okay. Is there a fertilizer you would recommend? You can do a fall fertilizer and most of your local garden centers are going to have like a fall Trine Trump fertilizer tend to go something a little bit more simple. Don't overdo it. You're probably not in a area of low nutrient value if it's in a bed. Yeah. Yeah. So I don't I don't really recommend a lot of fertilizer unless the plants are struggling where where are you located again? The the home is near Montello. Okay. Yeah. I was gonna say this is the Marquette county. We we offer the service where you come out and offer advice, unfortunately, not that far, but we can come out and offer you a people advice, especially if they're trying to reclaim because we're getting people have the itch now to to prune and do a lot of things with their plants. And at this point, you don't want to be doing that. Because again will inspire new growth. However, we're going to get as we get closer. And closer to winter, Jim we'll talking more about doormen, pruning, and that's the time where you really can go in and start to work on rejuvenating old leggy shrubs and getting them to be a little bit more. And again, it's a process, and we wanna make sure people understand that. When you take out a lotta the bulk of a plant next spring. It's not gonna look the best. But it's better than perhaps starting over. Exactly. Thank you, Robin for that. Call we've got a couple of texts here. Let's see half. My yard is creeping Charlie or creeping Jenny any suggestions. Thankful. There's ninety creeping Jim in their boy, I'll say that you don't want that around. So right for your if it's if it's that bad you may want to start over. If there's not a lot of grass in the yard. And I do see this all the time. In older sections of save Brookefield or? What would tosa, you know, people people aren't sure when they've been in the house for thirty years in the grass is growing there when they moved in and at that point, you're probably looking to maybe have them consider we would spray herbicides to kill off all of the vegetation in the art. And the Rican air eaten overseas or disturbed this'll bring in some fresh topsoil and plant a new yard from scratch, your hands at the second half of this question because he said if I do get rid of both what are your suggestions? Because I'm going to have big bear bear patch. And that's what you do. Right. And today's seed mixes are so much. I've been at this for twenty five years. The seed mixes reuse today are phenomenally improved from twenty five years ago now being able to take somebody's thirty or forty year old lawn and putting down today seed mixes, they're more disease resistant, they have their more colors this color stays. Richer. It's bread better. A lot of times. The seating is the the the the -ness of it is better. So that it fills in and it's more stress resistance. So if you've got a thirty or forty or fifty year old one it's a very good idea to consider redoing it. And it'll be I think a lot less headaches for you in the long run. Okay. And we've got another text will get to right after this right now, I want to tell you. You're listening to Wisconsin radio station. WTMJ the yellow American window and door. "Have a. Difficult time being a governor will be listen to polls and again take those, for what they're worth it's a neck and neck race but that's always the case in Wisconsin all these races, usually, come, down, to, the end and a slight uptick a, slight surge at the the wreck before the election delivers at four one. Or the other party The the ADC is an important part of our states Through his campaign that he would absolutely have, some sort, of an agency that. Works on trade missions job creation supporting investing in business in Wisconsin But he doesn't say how that, would differ from the WDC so what does that tell you pure unadulterated on the, builder rated, politics really that's what it is I'm. Looking for something original Something that says As a Republican looking at how Democrats thinks that kind. Of makes. Are doing the job for us Doing the best job they can do with the funding they have I think we'd lose track of things when it, comes to the to the? Essence of what these races? Are about what do they really do? What are these agencies do what are the elected officials really do so let's look at. The facts Under the governor. Went from deficit to surplus rainy day fund increased as much as I complain. About transportation funding and there's still a lack. Of a of a long-term plan to bring a stable funding solution for transportation and I've called out the governor on, that we still see major? Road projects and four south? That, are buying properties building buildings coming in Wisconsin What did you say those folks again, easy to, say these, things Because you? Don't, know what you're talking about And I'll wrap with this if you can't fix the schools If I drew a map of, Wisconsin Milwaukee for Tony even. If you can't, fix the schools can't move that conversation forward other. Than saying teachers need more money How would we expect you. To fix anything, at the state level How do you have any credibility on this issue And while you may not like the fact that the Republicans and outside groups are painted you as. "And and is there any correlation to the battle they have versus what we have to do in michigan well yeah i um you hear these red flag warning in california which we have those some time here in michigan as well knows are characterized by you know where you have uh high temperatures in i wind speed and low humidity's which are things that can drive fires and two wins particularly in california right now in southern california beat it and i and a win down there and neither seasonal win there's a similar phenomenon up in northern california and the they blow this time of year and and they're prevailing when strong winds which whip up the fires can move embers in advance of higher lie rather quickly sure and it gets beyond where the firefighters are right i mean you can't you can't head off every uh every avenue of uh of advancement by the fire well an income spread so fast with the wind especially yeah well it's uh it's tragic we face those wins here in michigan when we have the fires to or the other is high because they're getting what forty five fifty mile an hour winds i think in cal wellknown it depends on some days we do have days where there's a red flag warning days here out of summer days or or um late spring days when nom de conditions enough forest are still cried after a uh spring gums and the grass has an edge chance marine up in in its uh dry under story view of in the forest and both offing combined to make dangerous data poor conditions a few years ago there was we had the black river falls fire a south of dumb is coming in marquette county and that dumb that burned uh about three dozen structures in that fire uh that that was a red flag warning to a red flag warning day and so when when we hear of those the aware of them if you're going to be in the north country in.
