Hi i'm phil donahue and marlo thomas and we're going on a series of double dates to find out what makes a marriage last. We flew out to santa monica to visit. Ted danson and mary steenburgen. Their house is carved into the side of a hill. It's a craftsman style. Bungalow built in nineteen twenty two and it has what is called a living roof which is covered with greenery to fight off climate change. Ten mary decorated themselves is very relax and homey mostly. It was their warm connection to each other. That grabbed her attention from the start. This is fun. Yeah we've been so excited. We're really that you asked us. Well you came to mind immediately. Really people are always asking us. How did you. How are you married too long. And what i like in likes me. He's cute boys smells and that's a big deal so smell good. Ted likes to play the rascal but once we settled at their farm style kitchen table and began to talk. He was so honest and vulnerable rule of four of us here. I'm the only one who's only married once. Yes i'm the third. i'm being married. Well that maybe that's an interesting way to start because you're a wild optimist or you're total. Denial i mean. I got married and college carnegie Halfway through and i think it's fair to say the real communication would have been I'm afraid to go to new york by myself. Are you oh well. Let's go Sharon apartment and buddies that would have been kind of the emotional truth but somehow we ended up getting married and twenty two and Married for five years good friends but certainly not you know a a marriage And then got divorced and married again and had children but still a huge level of unconsciousness on my part and that lasted fifteen years. I mean my life was incredibly messy but underneath. There was a lot of work going. On where i was trying to stop being a liar and wake up and everything. Pretty much was not hugely faithful. Leave it at that. So i did all this work myself but by the time we met i was convinced i was incapable of hemming in a relationship that i wouldn't mess up. This was back in one thousand nine hundred ninety four when both of them were in a film called pontiac moon. And just like when. I first met you. Ted was drawn to marry immediately. And what was it about her. When you cast an apart- together you have an excuse to look at somebody in the eye whereas otherwise i'm kind of shy. We're about to work together so you you're supposed to know each other so you share and i was i was like i said a hot mess and so i shared my life with her on that first night and it was very clear. Nothing was possibly going to happen. Because nutty i was and mary was looking to be in a relationship so it really started off friends until halfway through the production. Took a canoe ride jump in here. I don't wanna do model. Okay all right so we were playing This kind of one thousand nine hundred sixty s kind of it was a very strange fell. But we're not going to have a relationship. Mary ni- pica's that's clear but we should do something fun and kind of old fashioned romantic because that's kind of what the film is like a by then. I knew that when. I showed up at lunch and somebody else was sitting next to mary. The part of me was like Little grumpy that. I hadn't got there in time to sit next door but then we took a canoe ride and it was just tied. Big tidal river called the mendocino river crack big river. And we got into a canoe that had an outrigger. It was just a beautiful connote. And there was a group of three or four other people going up and we outdistanced them quickly and we just kept going around the next bend. It was always in the front me in the back. effortlessly paddling. Which is you learn a lot. I think in a canoe and there was very little conversation except when it was right. Sea otters blue herons saw. It was just. It was just magically beautiful and lincoln peaceful and at ease and i think on the way down. We stopped to have a little bite on the corner of the side of the river. And you kept wanting to turn around us. That was kind of for our wedding. The chew part of our bows was a poem about that canoe. Ride it was really a charter for our marriage About look you know. Finding the truth in each other's eyes. And but mary what has in our entire life. Been the person that goes. Let's let's go around the next bend. Come on let's let's do this. I'm usually the one going. Oh i don't you know..

Not an easy thing to do in hollywood so marlo asks what's the glue that keeps them together. It's that we're compatible. She's this person on this. I'm this person who performs and part of me needs attention and this and that that doesn't threaten her and she doesn't feel neglected by that you know in in especially in this business. The pieces have to fit that way. I feel like he needs that attention from other people. All i want is the attention from my family. I don't really need it from even get it from me as much as they should not cheese that you're catholic italian and all that it was very demonstrative and it was just hard to show anything like that but you know what. I don't even think it's only that because i noticed. I think it's genetic. I think it's something you're born with with on me. Never said you love me. Never so i go out of my way to make sure your kids don't feel that but even when i do it doesn't roll off the tongue. It's natural yes. But i do it but i feel self conscious during so they pick up on. My kids are now they. Now say love you. Yeah that was hard. It's hard was it hard for you though to round here. Yeah it's weird to some people told me he loved me. We were in chicago near his home. We're taking law. And he said to me okay. I'm gonna play a card here. Was that new play a card year. I said yeah he says i love you. I said that's a car. Get it right chris. His parents ever said come natural. Said i love you all the today we cried. My father cried all the time. Everybody very emotional. Roy romer out. Yeah so it's completely different kinds of well. How about the first time. We kissed the first time we kissed. He drove me home to my mom's house and we. We made out in the car so we were done. And i don't know what to do next. Because i look at him and he literally is not looking at me he can't even look he's looking straight talk straight ahead and i'm like okay so tomorrow the call me it was so awkward you know the afterwards awkward was fine. So what have you learned from being married this long that you would pass on. Well i think that you shouldn't decide until you know the person totally you know. I think by the time we decided you knew who i was. And i knew who you were. We wouldn't together two years where people date ten years they get married and then get divorced and i never understood show nine. So what's the big surprise. Yeah i now. What about stress. Who handles it better. We stress over different things. That's the problem is because i stress over things that you really should know erotic. I'm the neurotic. one lot. Australia's over what's his bump. What's this thing that he hates me. That kind of all all day. There's something you know i am. I'm the roddick hypochondriac a pessimist and obsess over things. Which she stresses over things like real thing. That's what i am the rational i stress over the kids. You know they're not working. They're not going to school or it. Just bec- the real life things where he's just obsessed over little. Yeah well there's a there's a great saying that a good marriage people don't go crazy at the same time we go crazy at the same. So why would he won. I plan to keep panning. And i've been trying to really work on that. Which is when he panics. I really try very hard not to and he tries not think we do that. Pretty good we interviewing other people about marriage is really interesting because every time we do we get in the car and say we'll do we do that. You know one of the things we were thinking through is about what we really get from the other that we just can't get any place else and not love and sex. Those things other emotional things. And i'm very self reliant person. I'm very resourceful and tough and all that. But when i get blue or down only one person can make it better. And that's phil. He will talk me out of where i put one of those people who always feel as i said the wrong thing somewhere on. Did you see that person's face. And when i really why did i say that. Then are you kidding. You were the most interesting person at the party crazy. you know. he'll just bring me all the way from zero up. So i'm trying to figure out how that if there's that and you guys i think well what i get from harvey's the truth you know in this business where everyone either is phony kissing harass you know. I know that's not going to happen with her. She's just gonna tell me the truth and not not be mean about it. But it's exactly what i want. I don't count on yes. Perfect example. And when everybody loves raymond premiered. I was in la and she was home with the kids and so to celebrate. We were going to vegas. And kevin james buddy and i told her she was going to vegas. We have. I'm home with the kids. Go play by show. Premiered and i was kind of being mockingly. Cocky you know. I was saying you understand what is happening right now. My i'm being broadcast in front of the whole united states. Okay thirty million people are going to see tonight you know. I'm just trying to be knowing whenever i'm gonna be a star tomorrow. And which she said you still the dick.

"Our day in los angeles with ray and anna romano involved a little more staging than we were used to. That asked us to meet at a hotel near their home. So we got there a few hours early and rather than sit in noisy lobby. We booked a room ordered room service and then proceeded to rearrange furniture until the setting was just right. Once they arrived we all rated the minibar and everyone eight m. and m.'s while marlowe struggled with the recording equipment has to go. I can't believe you're doing it all but then when you press this button does it light. Because it's supposed to see here but you sorted out like chant. Yes okay well. that's funny. Analogy we finally settle down to talk well. First of all you guys met went how we worked together at a bank or a burke we were we were really young. Spank tiller us. I think i started when i was eighteen. He wasn't there yet. I started working there when i was twenty five. I lived at home. I twenty nine. Wow yeah so. I drove my bike to work. I was pretty much like not the the do start guy working at the bank. We know when he started there. There was a bunch of young girls. We all work there. And we're like oh there's a young guy starting here you know whatever. And then he stroked by late by the way always tend to sit back down about two years and i left after two years right and then i asked her out after i had left the bank. Yeah that's why. I wasn't working anymore. But little footnote. She was the third bureau xed out at the bank. The first he said

"That has changed. Oh yeah is the last three years. I've been sober. So i don't drink any alcohol so that's helped a lot because that's not only made me more depressed. But it also made me more heightened to want to start a fight or be more right or be more headstrong. So that's been a big change. Did you do that. Because neil astra to. No no there's substance abuse in my family. And i think that i owed it to myself and i owed it to my kids. It's one of the things. I'm just deeply proud about. David is his determination to do that. It's very hard complicated decision. But it never got to the point. Where i was i was in jail or harmed blonde myself. My bottom was not bad but it was bad enough. That i needed to change or i could persevere anything and i would still be with him. He's an amazing parent. And i think what makes off what makes me love. David is the depth of flavour. Is the the amount of routes that have been planted. Will you can't control where they go and that's why it's fun because it's always changing you know Well we we. We realized that we did do make certain decisions about things. Have i i. I learned that. I wasn't a very good listener. And that when phil had a problem it took about ten years and one day he was telling me something was very troublesome for him and he stopped the middle east. And please don't say anything. Don't tell me anything and the thing that bothered him is that i'm a fixer. So if somebody gives me a problem. I am going for the phone so I had to learn. I know i can do this. But this isn't the way to do this with with another person. And not you know. And he wanted he said we stopped producing me. I can do it and it was big. They think a relationship. We all need to go with the flow a little bit if you missed the flight and if the other person to blame there's nobody to blame them here you are. You missed a flight now. You can stay at the airport for a couple more hours. We spent a lot of time in our relationship coming up with individual expectations of how the party's gonna go how the vacations gonna go. How tonight's gonna go. How how that phone calls going to go. And it's rarely met and and you can be bothered by being inaccurate and your expectations or you can just go with the new outcome. I think expectations is huge. What are you see that makes marriage last. And maybe it's just the expectation thing which is really better said than anybody is that laughter. I was gonna say lack of me. I really wasn't really is. I think that that's part of the reason. One of the main reasons we stayed together because we just make each other laugh all the time he makes me laugh so much vice versa. And that's neil patrick harris and his husband david burka. I sure wish i'd been there for that. I do to. You would've loved them until next time. I'm marlo thomas donahue doesn't even have to be decision. "marlo" Discussed on Double Date with Marlo Thomas & Phil Donahue

"Hi i'm phil donahue and marlo thomas we've been married for over forty years but when i was younger wanted to be married it didn't seem possible for two people to live together for life and you were half right. Nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. The let about the ones at last. What's the secret sauce. I have no idea but the best way to find out is to talk with some long married couples. You know like a double date and so we did. We made dates with couples. We admire actors. Athletes musicians journalists. And you know what. I love about a double date. Everybody talks everybody remembers and you get a real sense of who this couple is together. Exactly take by all davis and julius tenant what a couple here are two great actors with all the talent and none of the eagle. The first feeling you get from them is welcome remember. Julius was standing outside on the street in front of their house just to be sure we didn't get lost such a great. Hello told us a lot about them right from the start. My big thing me. Julius is where the fun we have the best parties on getting to know you. Let's go workout for. Should we settled down at their dinner table with these tall comfy chairs that you could just sink into and we started talking. I felt an immediate bond with like me. She never could imagine herself with a life partner. I want to get married either. I never had any visions of walking down an aisle with the white dress. I admired every woman who was alone and happy and who had a lot of boyfriends. I was a narcissistic artist. That's what i was right. And then then. I read somewhere that you prayed for husband. When i was up at williamstown theatre festival i was doing the raisin in the sun and a friend of mine said why you alone and i felt like oh my god. I almost started crying and my eyes were welling up. He was like. Is there a reason why you don't have a relationship. I said while. I guess i've just never found anyone who loved me. You know. and then. He was the one joseph edwards i know because he just got married got married. He said go into your room. This is what i want you to do. And get on your knees and you ask god for bubble bio psycho. Although on fire. To jesus person and you did i did. I did and i. There was a specific prayer. Right that you mean very specific because he told me to be specific and literally. I was like okay. This is what i want now. He really doesn't have to be black. But i want him to be black. I want him to look like a football player. Because i love football players and one the beat from the south. 'cause i love countrymen and i kinda would appreciate it. He's already been married. he's already had kids. Because i don't want that pressure. And i want him to be like maybe very spiritual church going funny. You know maybe someone who is an artist. Tuesay's got those artistic sensibility. And i met julius three and a half weeks later three and a half weeks three and a half weeks. How on city of angels stephen bochco 's city of angels. We actually met during the pilot episode. I was dating a girl. I was really trying to run away monster. And so when i met viola i gave her my card and then she called and then we went on our first date and twenty years later here we are and i felt like i had done all the work before. Then i was in therapy. I finally went to there. Because i had screen actors guild. Insure i so. When julius came along. I remember telling my therapist. You know this guy gave me a car in his really good looking and she was like all okay because you could tell us you maybe a little bored with what i was talking about a talk about something else so and i said this guy gave cardon he. Oh he invited me to church and she was like have you called them back. I said no. I don't know 'cause i'm struck. I gotta get my created. I gotta get my life in order. She said call him. Wow and and i said yeah but you know what. They may be something wrong with him. She's like there's something wrong with everyone viola. There's something wrong with view. It took me six weeks to call him so nervous. I was having anxiety attacks. La and then me finally called them. I said he's never gonna remember me and he remembered me and i remember. He invited me to his place where he worked and the openness emotional availability. I never had that before usually men. It's like okay. How do you feel how do you feel about me. You love me. Do you not love me. Want to be not julius. You'd never had to guess. Mom did a good job. She really did. Mama told me to respect. Women knew that there was a certain kind of decorum around the way you needed to treat. Women feel said to me one time. What do you have so much against. Marriage i well i think that people lose courteousness and i. I really don't like that. I don't wanna be treated in a discourteous dismissive way and we do that for each other. I mean i'll say to him up to get you a sweat. It's cold out here or he'll say that to me. There's a concern for the other person. I went to an all boy catholic high school and one of the things that was given to us. Were dancing lessons and they taught us know you. Don't call the woman you place your hand gently on her back and you'll be sure to return her to wherever it was when you asked her to dance being taught grace. And that's a lovely i. I will talk girl school. We both catholic management to so. And i think i think sharing not so sharing religion or faith but sharing the values of that when people ask me what i. I think. Our marriages lasted at that. Will we define certain important words the same like what's fair and unfair. Yes what's acceptable and unacceptable. It feels says to me. That's not fair. i know. I know what it means. I don't.

"I've always noticed the most important things happen when you're not looking for them back in hundred seventy seven and went on this talk show to promote a project. I remember meeting her in the green room before the show. The big brown is the firm handshake. The warm smile and then he walks the thick white hair. Those killer blue is it was like one of those shampoo commercials where everything suddenly goes into. Slow motion arlo. Thomas is well i knew. She was bright articulate but she was also very sexy at the urban nineteen fifty-three she would have been what we catholic boys called and impure thaw. Excuse me i'm updating you. Don't you just love these smooth show. I felt like a first date. Phil asked me more personal questions than i've ever been asked in an interview. He dug in about the man. I dated and asked if it was someone special looking back. You probably wasn't very professional but it was honest. I'm sorry that we are out of time. You are really fascinating. Said it when we were off the air. And i want to say you are loving generous and you like women and it's a pleasure and whoever the woman in your life is very lucky. It was a chemical reaction. We married three years later. Shortly after thirty ninth anniversary we found out that a couple. We knew good friends been married forever for getting a divorce. We were stunned. We began to think. Wow if this happened to them could it happen to us. What did they go wrong. A mortar the point or do we go right and it got us wondering. Is there really a secret sauce to successful marriage. Maybe if we talked with a lot of couples we could unlock the mystery of what makes a marriage last. So that's how we wrote our book pulling together. The stories of forty celebrated couples. And now we're bringing their voices to you in this podcast life. Viola davis and julius tenant sting and trudi styler judge. Judy and jerry scheindlin raanana romano. Neil patrick harris and david burqa. We talked with actors athletes musicians journalists even a former president and first lady. And when you sit down on a double date as we did with the incredible couples. You'll hear in this podcast. In interesting thing happens everyone talks. Everyone remembers. i want to get married. I never had any visions of walking down an aisle with the white dress. I admired every woman who was alone and happy and who had a lot of boyfriends. The reason this marriage works is because thankfully she knows i love her. And you know some women who have to hear it out loud when you're married to a guy like me you know. Having kids is build game changer. And when you're two guys you don't accidentally get pregnant as much as we tried honestly. You didn't think that i would do it no i. Didn't you said i dare you write it being divorced right. She served him divorce papers. The next day we have a pretty intense sexual charge between us. Still but as truly sad. That's kind of ephemeral. What's important is that. I really like this woman and she really likes me before you know it. You're all telling stories about first encounters. Parenting health scares infidelity addiction. I mean all the possible challenges that can crop up even in the best of marriages. That's our story. And we're sticking to it. I'm phil donahue marlo thomas and we can't wait to share some of the labs and tears in revelations that we had with these remarkable spouses. It's double date with marlo. "Of something but i didn't dealer responsibility to that. You know when when we were on our honeymoon we're going we're on a plane and And fill had gone to the bathroom. When i had on my wedding band my diamond ring and all that stuff in this woman question me she said you're marlo thomas in city s. I am and she said you. Are you married. And i was. I felt like a blushing bride. I went yes i'm married. You know she's at all my god. Why would you be married. i'm so disappointed. I said oh my god. What have i done. Let all these women down. So i did have some of that. I did have people who wrote to me and said you know. I always look to you as a beacon of being an independent woman and i thought well i was independent and i'm still independent but i'm married now but i'm still independent. I think of that as a time when in some ways. The feminist movement in the women's movement could be quite rigid during that time. Did you have friends from doing political organizing around women's rights that that You felt like you had to explain your choice. Oh no that's kind of a myth You oh ms magazine. Which is about a feminist. Get a lot of married women who were editors and writers from for ms magazine And were married and had children and their struggle who marry are still not married. So i don't know. I never felt uncomfortable. Lauria steinem and bella abzug gave me my bridal shower. Oh really yeah wait. Where was it. Tell me about it. I want to be able to picture it. It was my friend. Kill hearts apartment and it was hilarious was after we came back from our honeymoon because we nobody knew what we're getting married so when we came back everybody was mad at me. Because i hadn't told them i was getting married and And of course they all bought me things like mops and tied in all that is to make fun of me things to clean the house days on the walls some of my earlier sayings about marriage. One of them is marriage is like living with the jailer. You have to please. That was the decoration and another one was a marriage like a vacuum cleaner. You stick it to your ear and it sucks out. All your energy in.

"In the footsteps of her famous father. The any thomas. She was starring in and producing the tv. Showed that girl a sitcom about a single aspiring actress. Living in just a minute before you go any further yes. Dawn and i are very from each other. But at the moment marriage is the furthest thing from. It's time it got a little closer. It was the first time on television that there was a girl who said she didn't want to get married and she lived in her own apartment as she didn't have she wasn't with her mother or her brother or her whatever. In fact the network at one time said we'd like to have a an aunt. Move in with you or six year old brother or something. I said i'm not gonna do that. And they were scared to death that the divergant public wouldn't accept a girl who didn't have a family unit At that point in your life when you were thinking about marriage and what marriage meant in particular for women how did you think about it. Oh i thought it was a very bad institution for women and it was nothing that i wanted to be a part of. I was very happily single. I was living the life. I wanted to live. I was making my own money. I have my own house ahead. My own china pattern and crystal and silver battered. And i thought boy. I'm doing it. After that girl came to an end. Marlow continued to build on that success in acting and activism including co founding the ms foundation for women and then in nineteen eighty marlow famously did get married to tv host phil donahue. She was forty two years old marlow and fill are now both in their eighties. They celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary. Last year i talked with marlo while she sat in her office in the apartment overlooking central park where she and phil have spent most of their marriage and a lot of alone. Time during the pandemic are housekeeper. Didn't come in because we were at quarantine. We were laughing. We couldn't figure out how to do. Certain things What what did you not know how to do. Okay didn't know which was washer. Which was a dryer because the kind that are stacked and they look exactly the same. They both have a round window. And i said the film whatever one says. Rents has got who folds the laundry. The vote did anyone who is surprised. That marlo thomas splits. The folding with her husband clearly did not grow up listening to her children's album pre to be n. Meeting which is the best when it came out in one thousand nine hundred seventy two. It was a real breakthrough. How adults talk to kids about gender. And what was possible for them. This poem from it housework was performed by carol channing. Children when you have a house of your own. Make sure when there's housework to do that you don't have to do it alone. Little little girls when you're big husbands and wives if you want all the days of your lives to seem sunny summer weather make sure when there's housework to that you do it together. When marlo made free to be you and me. She gathered together a lot of her famous friends to pass on some essential life lessons. She did that again last year and a book that she and phil wrote called. What makes a marriage last in which they interviewed forty well-known married couples about their relationships and they write about how they came to be married. After marlo thought for years. The marriage was not good for women. It wasn't that. I didn't believe that i could be faithful or i didn't believe i could love someone i just didn't believe it. Marriage was a good place for a woman. I just I thought it really was a place for one and a half persons the one person could either be a man or woman and the other person would be the half person that would support the other person in their dream and certainly in my family. My father had this very big career and my mother was in support of it and and she did that and and she was kind of happy main. She had given up her own singing career to travel my father around the country before he moved to los angeles and made it in television so You know. I didn't see a good model and i think that's very important because if you don't see it can't be it. Did you have the kind of relationship with your dad when you were an adult that you could say you know. I don't really want to get married. If it means marriage. Looks like what you and mom have had. Oh yeah we big discussions about that. And how did how did those conversations did he did. He feel insulted by that. What was that conversation like in your family will. He wasn't insulted by. He got it. He knew that i was not my mother. He knew that wasn't going to be me. He didn't raise me to be to be. My mother. raised me to to be someone in the world and my sister and my brother not just me so he knew i wasn't headed there. I mean my nickname was a little girl was missing independence. I always independent. I just never you know my father kind of instilled in my sister and me that we could be anything we wanted to be. And his his His which is his compliment. Which i i know sound sexist. But he's to say to us your man-size women you're going to be man sized women i guess to him being mansize lament. We were as good as a man he did. Want me to marry and have children. And he's did you know He would every now and then comment on that and it was so proud of how hard i worked. And your when you thought of your mother as a young woman. Did you feel a sense of like frustration on her behalf that she didn't have the same choices that you did or did you feel a sense of like. Did you think. Look at her and think you're not as you're not as strong as i am. What was that relationship like. I was very protective of my mother. just i always felt that she needed a little tending to Tell me about that. In what way because she was you know she had her own radio show when she met my dad so then she gave it up to travel with them a little radio show in detroit where they both were were. I was born and we were there about six months and was out of detroit at quickly and As an infant and then went to chicago my father wanted to go with.

This wasn't the season premiere this episode to forgive me of real housewives of atlanta season thirteen episode two but we were introduced to the new cast members in this episode juicer door and the toya ali of the toyota immediately set the screen on fire. And every time you see her and what she's doing and saying she's incredibly beautiful. I love her accent. I love hearing her speak Her in kenya have great chemistry off one another mind not afraid of you know. She doesn't shy away from conversations that feel a little bit uncomfortable. She makes point She had a great debate withdrew dora. Who is the new peach holding cast member Actress juicer door. I'm sure many people are familiar with her from the game From movies she played. T buys she's been in a lot of things But druce doors on the show personally I liked the fact. She has a beautiful family. Beautiful children husband is attractive They are they've been married for six years And she is present in the that she's in. There was a great scene of kitchen with cynthia who adore. Who looked beautiful. This whole episode. cynthia. You live my god but yeah exactly but Her said you had a great scene shooting together. I will say that. I felt like some of jean. Some of drew scenes were affected. I'll just put it like that. Some of her scenes were affected. There's a conversation that took place between her and her husband where it was revealed that when he gets upset he basically goes missing He had gotten upset. He got upset and he was gone for three days. She didn't know where he was. He was responding to her text and her communication but he never said where he was and he was gone for three days. People showed up on being a black man and put it off on a lot of different things. But i put the whole conversation off. His bad acting is it was very unrealistic. Things things that they were saying. Especially in a black household and druze pacing and cadence. And just the things that she the dramatic moments in the conversation. It just failed affected. And so i. I just felt so you think this is just another tv role for her. 'cause 'cause you know on the game. She played usa doors. Are you saying. She's on housewives playing again her seen i dunno Because it was could be yourself or google. Play your so. She's got a peach and letoya doesn't have a peach cuss a very good question after allegedly his lee alleged the exactly asante an the toyota is heavily Shown in heavily involved in a lot of the Major plotlines of the season And allegedly the word on the street. Is that la toya was all set to be a fool. Peach holding housewife and her estranged husband at the last minute pulled out in wanting his children to be a part of the So the totality of her life and they made the decision to have her cast as a friend of the show. But i think she's one of those friends She's one of those friends that has a lot of involvement in the season in the way that marlo hampton does so the toy presence will definitely be failed in after when episode. It already is Drew seen affected

That's right, you don't say was Kennedy's first big hit game show lasted six seasons. During its first run, Kennedy best remembered for another game show. It started in 1970. For that one lasted almost eight years, Hollywood two contestants were playing against each other for the right to win $100,000 on the one of $1000 name that tune live performers. They would play the song Sing the Sons and then the contestants will have to guess what the song Wass they sing it right up to the title. I didn't want to give it away. Obviously, when those singers was AH woman named Kathie Johnson I know her as Kathie Lee Gifford that so she got her start modest beginnings. This song. It doesn't just sound since so seventies. "Reiterating on the heels of this Atlantic piece, where again, I say put up or shut up Whoever's making the claims and even the Washington Post on DH, the other sources that are claiming and confirming and adding Let's dispense with the anonymous sources here. Let's Let's go. Come on. Anonymous sources revealed yourself. Show your faces. Could trump have said these things. Maybe Didi. I don't know. Again here on the kids. 1993 pre nuptial agreement was obtained by Vanity Fair. This is last year in 2019. And it was a pre nup between Donald Trump and Marlo Maples. And in that particular pre nup. It established that Donald Trump would stop $100,000. In child support payments for Tiffany Trump when she turned 21 years old or if she joined the military, the Peace Corps or land in a full time job. Is I mean, was was president trump averse tow any of the kids joining the military and then then the other piece here, and this is in the ants book or aren't And this is Of course, the aunt of the kids and the niece of Donald Trump. Trump said that he would disown Donald Trump Jr if he joined the Army, and there were reports that Donald Trump Jr was considering joining the Army, but he would disown him if he did. Is that true or false again? That's in the nieces book, which took a lot of slams. This is from Trump's brother. Uh, his daughter trumps brother's daughter, the niece who wrote the really nasty book. And remember, that's the same needs that also recorded Trump sister making disparaging comments, Withy surreptitiously recorded tapes. Which got a little bit of play recently.

So join us at Patriot, dot com slash clear and vivid. That's Patriot dot com slash clear and vivid. Clear and vivid, and now back to my conversation with Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue and how they set out on the adventure that became their book. What makes a marriage last? Only first one out to to begin to get stories for this book. And as you know, we interviewed each person each couple face to face like a double date. We went out kind of thinking that we were reporters didn't define it, but you know we kind of. We had the microphone and all that. But it became apparent immediately. That, the only way that this was going to work, and the and the way that it happened was that we talked about ourselves to. So, in talking about ourselves, the other couples spoke about their cell theirselves. We didn't really have a a list of questions. We had some ideas we wanted to ask about jealous. You're fighting or feel like to ask a question about the other people's their parents marriages. The basically it was a conversation that sort of ignited, but it ignited a lot by talking about ourselves, which is different than a reporter or an interviewer most interviews you know that that that our interview will say well. Here's the kind of life I'm living. They don't do that, but that was I thought a very important part of the communication in this book. What you did. I think was something basic to communication which didn't make it an exchange of abstract ideas. You got into a personal exchange. You got connected to the other couple in a way. You wouldn't be if you just ask them a list of questions. You were trading human experiences, and that put flesh and bones on it. Whereas if you said, tell me five things that will make a marriage work, and they say tolerance a you know, acceptance of a would kind of die on the vine. Well, let's that old Indian saying you know. Tell me a story and I'll remember it forever. You know you you can't. You can't just give somebody a lesson or give them a quotation. It's a story. That's the story that that that that Pool Zhu into it. I think that it was a it was a wonderful experience. I mean I. believe that it has helped our marriage because we've We're talking about things that other people said in how. I would affect us like James Carville. Saying kick can down the road, or or just the fact that about accepting the fact that he's never. GonNa be me. That sounds simple, minded but I. Have to say to myself. Let alone still after all these years I find that I'm trying to get filled to do something the way I wanna done and this book helping by doing all these people leave him alone. Letting do it the way he wants to do it for America, fewer wars right are used to be wars. Would come out of this kind of. disagreement or Acceptance of the person to the UN, accepting of the fact that I'm running at eight engines all the time, and he's laid back. That's the big personality difference as a big personality rob. Reiner talked about that, too that his wife is like that. She's running around all the time doing days and he likes to sit and think that's where he gets his ideas for his the. The things that he writes what he's directing. He spends a lot of hours. She says there's a dividend. The couch he says differ hours thinking and he has got to the point where he's not telling her to sit down and she's not telling him to get out, but that's taken time to not want the other person to have your kind of life energy you don't. and. In working on the book, it worked well, because I'm a very impulsive irs Novi one hundred years, so you know I'm a personal jumps for the phone. Let's get this done. He's the person who says well. Let's just say that. Do we really WANNA do that? That has been annoying to both of us in our lives, but it worked and working on the book it really did. He didn't panic when I panicked. And I didn't. lay back when he wanted to lay back. It complimented each other rather than being appointed friction. What are some of the other ways? Couples had of avoiding a fight getting out of a fight, Ron Howard and his wife Cheryl. Were very specific about what they do. They have been marriage counseling so when they're having a difficult time, they put on a tape recorder and they. Each person gets two minutes, and they tell their grievances. They have their their argument on tape. And he said it's amazing. How much more civil you get? What has big recorded? And then they'll play it back not that minute but. And he said you know one of the first time they did this. He was thinking to himself. She's monopolizing the conversation. She's dominating this. And when he played it back, it was not she wasn't at all. It was a fifty fifty thing just was annoyed with her so to him. It was dominating, but they learned these.

"I Dunno drives me are. I'm triggered everyone. I'm triggered by this scene towel triggered. I'm I'm triggered by Porsche looking for shoes. Because that's like every day of my life and I live in a one bedroom looking for shoes every day of my like. Where could this be? There's only one place they could be. There's they're not there at the end of the bed. Now then closet North End the clubs now they in the bathtub now. How can I lose my shoes? Every fucking day that is that is very interesting. That happens to be like another pair of shoes that way when you lose one and you can get to the other ones right away layers at the same shoe because I have such a fat foot. I can only buy shoes online. And so I have like three pairs. It seems you every every on like a cartoon character and then I'll find two of the left now James's dog they're probably picks up the shoes and move them around. You looked so stressed out every time I'm looking for my shoes he's just looking at me like Oh my God because he knows what he did dog guilt. The dog knows that Shit I moved Ryan Shula again and now he's mad at cool. Maybe I'll look really really guilty right now. So she's going back to work finally edition and She's getting her baby ready for work and everything and now they're doing this thing where instead of Saint Porsche's sister they're saying Tang Forces Assistant Laura's on the phone yet because I think Laura aller Lauren I sing Longman. Oh shower later. They showed Lauren later. They're like porsches assistant lauren. Well there was also I think just like board and they're just GONNA like thoughts. What's around with the chirons because it's like the only thing to do right now because they they show Porsche getting dressed in her room and it's eight thirty five? Am and then like she brings the the baby they call an Uber and she put the baby in Uber and it's like nine zero three am as if like I'm thinking okay. We're GONNA see how long it takes to get into a car with Porsche. Oh she forgot the bottles. Expecting it'd be like nine seven nine fifteen nine thirty but it's just like no we're only going to eight thirty five. Am Nine am and we're just going to drop. Stop this whole thing. We're just going to give random times in the middle of the episode just because why not just adding urgency to inner some urgency to a very like non. Urgent moment went as Porsche gets into a car. I don't even know really why we needed the scene. I think they were just trying to cobble together. An episode basically. I think what happen. I think this was like a placeholder episode. They need they knew they needed to create some sort of drama between Cynthia and meany and like sort of like build something around that but then while while that was happening in New York literally nothing is happening in Atlanta so they just have to fill time with watching porsche gather bottles of milk and bring them to our ruber love so the knee is in is. She's at the boat house in the park and she tells them kids over the balcony. She's like are you kids cursing there are adult here really. I didn't see any on. TV Slow Burn. Was that fun. Loving Dini added again Nina Nina known for her for her proper decorum in public spaces. So then Marla comes comes up and full on Dream Girl. Secrecy Studio fifty four benches is the boat house. Yeah it is like a gold sequined Edwin Jumpsuit. And like she has a tip. That's about to fall out of it and that's also by the way like one pm and everyone's just in lunch flowing lunch garb and marlow is so so extra. I mean I. I just don't know if like I don't know whether or not I should just like. Love it or just roll. My eyes are maybe somewhere. In between the Marlowe fucking love it. He's Hilarious at least she's herself. You know somewhere less like well I would look to Cynthia. She didn't tell me she was bringing eva then even left the table. Yeah well at least it got support but all it did was down there. What tell everybody would have bridesmaid? Said and then we got the clips of why Marlo is so hateful and and so completely wrong So basically marlow is telling me that she needs to make up with Cynthia which is not really the my the best thing to tell any Anini news now acting all innocent. She's like Cynthia was going to every blog and every podcasts and every outlet talking about how terrible rebel Iowa and then I finally did one interview you know and now it's like even if you did just do one interview you we have spent years and years being awful Cynthia and when you had your last fight how about. This like doesn't need you remember when she went on her fight with Porsche from I think two years ago or so when it was like the same thing it was like she was mad at Porsche over some stupid bullshit and then went everywhere and talk should about Porsche went on to watch his lives. The poor should be fired or whatever it was. I'm just saying that Nina's hypocrite and not in a fun Otaly and I love how seed listed. She's like she has gone on every interview so see even when on candy. So wow she's really making the the big. The big interview runs over there. Yeah I guess. New Cynthia an all the interviews Cynthia was saying like I feel like choose. Always come on their friendship and meany meaney was the one in her interview just like she's week she's whatever she whatever. She said she's weeks stupid. She's like afraid of life whatever it was but she goes after Cynthia the as a person so hers more below the belt. Not that really matters but you know that's those are my thoughts. Okay Chang. He's like you know a real sister to her of real says de the last thing I wanted to Karai. Is that octopus. Because I'm not eating octopus. Yeah Calamari and she's like not that kind of see marlow deep throat. An opt octopus. Yeah and then I was like okay. Well that's cute that that was a nice scene and I was like. Oh no the scene is still going to go so now. Nina's like well you. May you know I like appreciate you trying to get me to like have a talk with Cynthia. But I'm GonNa tell you right now I am not going to have a talk with. Cynthia dumped on so then it goes to commercial and then we come back Jack. We're still at the same scene. There wasn't even A. was there a cliffhanger there. Why are we still with meaning at the boathouse? It is still going on. It seems to be going on for ten minutes and nothing happened. Yeah I mean he's just getting mad because almost telling you to apologize and that's urban trigger and she's like I have to be the way to the ability of these people. Just get to sit back and look look like I'm dead wrong. No way she gets up and steps out. 'CAUSE Marlins Marlins marlins like I'd like. Can you at least acknowledge that. There's some part of it that you also contributed towards this thing. And that's when unions now and runs out of the boathouse and it's like the saddest chasing ever begins me. These like I leaving instead of getting into a high speeding taxi. Cab Get away. It's like one of those really slow bike. pedicabs seems like I will run no way she gets into this thing. It's like they're too lazy. They're like Walker just richer like literally literally marlow could have just like casually strolled up and been like. We're still talking but now she's like well he's on wheels. I mean it's it's a poor guy it's one mab on. A bicycle lugging meany leaks. How fast could it possibly be making effort? Yeah my skateboard or another pedicab. I would have loved moved like a pedicab version of fast and furious. But it'd be like the slow Andy mildly irked in the slow in the not even curious enough to follow you at a slow Walker so let's go to the object. Let's go talked to Jackie. Jackie doing her life now. I was worried. W WE'RE GONNA have another scene that had something to do with babies so this was made me really happy that we we did this. Yeah congratulations here. We are so ace. Starting Candy. Go to see Dr Jackie 'cause they're gonNA they're gonNA have happening Sam Baby. Yeah and Candies like yeah now. I see what it feels like to be a dude during the pregnancy for women like once or feet rubbed in her back hurts and Majett your you know now I know what it feels like but I like it. Yeah and then you know there's some discussion about who's going to cut the cord and like like candy. Says Todd can cut up. She will do it too if necessary. And then Dr Dodger. Jackie basically is telling them that when the baby comes The immediately bring the baby the candy. Who's going to be another room and like put the baby on candies chest etcetera and that's going to be like it for Canyon Janina because I I am imaginings as someone who has not gone to myself? I imagine that they immediately sever the relationship so that way there's no weird situation with the surrogate and the baby. I would imagine Agean 'cause I've seen a lot of lifetime but I don't know yeah I don't really know but that's what they make it sound like she's like okay. The baby will come out. Someone will cut the cord at trap door double open to Dina will fall through it. You'll hear screaming and grunting sound. Says the giant plant eats. Her plant will be fed. Go to sleep for the night while you you rest with the baby and leave out the back door. Okay how we are sending Schettino to replace that we'll just call federal and you will never see her again by the way. Apollo's out of jail. Did you know that high. Did you see those pictures. Like looking great. He looks like he's always look great. But like you know. I was one of the best jobs in America. You know I see why it's catching on. Yeah but you know some people go to the gym and they come out Joji dies but Apollo comes out like Apollo you know yeah but Apollo win an apollo and Joe Jude is when Joe Dude. Is You know what I mean. Only you can Polish a diamond. That yeah time. Yeah Joe just came out cubic zirconiums also also then we're back with force So she's she's going back to work and she's like it's my job we about everybody's T in pop culture but right right now pop..

"The Ramona t shirt from the holidays last year. So today we are going to talk real housewives of Atlanta which is chugging along. I'm a little concerned about it so for Ronnie. I'M NOT GONNA lie. I'm a little concerned. I'm hoping it's just like early. Season like weirdness Because I have to say I'm not really feeling like the show is coming alive in the ways that I wanted to. I'M GONNA Chalk it up to the fact that the cast sort of been like not really filming together yet and they've got some of the Robin Pride and summer number down here. This baby's everywhere. It's like not quite firing on the cylinders that I wanted to be. I think it's pretty funny. I mean to talk about. It is harder I guess sent to watch it because to watch it I crack up still at every scene. Well I mean the seams. Can you crying especially to skinny but I a crack up through the so but yeah it's a lot of. I would shock it up to just major depression. I mean there's like some major depression going on its cast area. Happy Jared late easy. Corologis dropped a litter and you know like I don't know you rich BA- happier. I guess we should also have congratulations to Kandi burruss. Who finally the Her new baby was born over the weekend. Blaise Blaise Blaise. Burruss to hurt crooked came out like a kid is to be a moment and then I realized the world play doing with blaze. No Relation Richardson. It is of glory. Yes so congratulations. Candy and the Fam- Etcetera Yeah so many Davies on the show so many babies. It's actually out of control. It really is. Yeah I want to have a baby and it Kinda just makes me WANNA give birth. Okay so you know what I WANNA do more. I want to ignore my mark. I'm really enjoying the mark. Is ignoring Kenya. Story by the previous lease is uh-huh i Kanye or the baby. Mark Refuses to look at her speaking of cold shoulders. We actually pick up with will Ni. Say hello to Cynthia Bailey on the Bravo pride. What will happen and so we see? We seen any walk up those stairs and she sees Cynthia goes Hamas Bailey and then Cynthia goes Hamas leaks and then as predicted any blows by her to give Kelly Dada huge hug. which honestly honestly most people would want to do anyway? Yeah but she did say were so there and we were wrong. We lost our office bat. Yeah like well. That's a little bit talk. She said hi but it was also like a very much. A cold shoulder was a high a high cold shoulder that was like not very very interesting to watch and basically knee is like hugging Kelly. Da and she makes them like very rudimentary small. Talk with Noel. Does your home for the summer. Novell's like yes okay bye. Yeah Noelle's like is it. Okay that we talk Cynthia's like yes. Of course it's it's it's up to to you know I'm glad she talked to you And so since he has a little confused I think Cynthia was ready for a fight but then Nina starts her victim something again with us. She's like no matter what has gone on with Cynthia. We had been sisters. I believe she wouldn't hurt me. This way Eh okay. Cynthia also does like a classic bed. Mandal remove which is like. Oh we're on a fight. Well when I see that person you know what I'm GonNa do gonNA give them a cold shoulder and then if they say something to me. I'm going to have these very choice. Words for them and then instead Cynthia says you look good miss leaks. which is what I was? Ah really friendly and positive instead station. So marlow was not invited on this float so instead she's just following along industry it's going it's me marlow and finally they get sick of her. You know just following along so Niimi. That's her up on the afloat. And that was that was probably the nicest thing that Nina ever did was allow Marlowe to like rise from the asphalt and like come up to the Bravo flow at least for a little bit until Andy Notice. They're probably the probably never did he probably never did. Because he was like at the top indie comb like Keno began to Cohen moment just kept poking his head over like look. I'm surprised all the fans that they were using to cool themselves down because the fans had faces on them surprised they just weren't all Andy Cohen. Andy Cohen Fan. And you. It's like a Wonky Fan. That doesn't quite quite work right and like it makes it halfway through a whole swipe and hops were winners like or just like swings back and forth in a chair they the fans when you put it sways back and forth. You'll like wait a minute. This fantasy fanning me. It's only swivelling you so weird. This fan just asked me about how big my indicas there's an emergency watch out New York their sirens outside. It's crazy I I like to hear them. My God there's an emergency every two seconds. No one even pays attention. We're like whatever on your own else. I'M GONNA. I gotTA streets across Asia. Can I tell you something I like. I think like last week or so on the bonus episode of maybe two weeks ago. I was talking about Thailand because because as promised before I left Thailand. I said I'M GONNA come back and talk about Thailand on stop but one thing I talked about with Thailand. I thought I talked about going to Bangkok. And I said you know it was like really exhilarating rating city and sensory overload. But it's just a lot and it's like very stressful. And you know there's just so much stuff happening all of the place and then I was walking around New York City I was I was in Times Square on on Friday night and I was like like why am I. Why am I making these observations about Bangkok as if this is like any different from New York City city? New York City is pure badness at times like I was walking around. I was like this is crazy. This is like this is way way more stressful and uncomfortable and anxiety creating than anything. I experienced in Bangkok but here we have musicals. That's true that's true. I did have I was able. I was able to have all this craziness like at least in the same space that Patti lupone exists Nixon. Easier I know no matter what happens in U.. Nor in New York you know that somewhere Bernadette Peters is watching TV and eating some hundred calorie popcorn nice feeling to know. Yeah Yeah it makes me feel good so yeah so pride parade. Yeah so pride pratice basically a bunch of Bravo bitches on on on the pride parade and then Cynthia's Cynthia's kind of walk walked with her big fight and me. I mean Cynthia Ivar basically just sniping sniping sniping from the side. 'CAUSE EVA sees marlow and she's like whatever a lot dogs here and they're just snipes snipes night but there's no real fight here you know and It's boring even like it's all love until pride is over right and Basically promising a big fight but then she's not going to give a big fight because he's just gonna eat her food at a sidebar instead of the regular bar which eva listen. You're being paid for this to go eat at the sidebar. You don't get to do that right. I mean it's sort of like a funny moment but ultimately really you should say and fight and fight Trixie monocle of Atlanta with one of my favorite moments moments of Trixie. I've loved when she thinks about royals. I got cloudy. This is so classic. This was really like this is why people tune into Trixie Aleksy like this is why she got her career in the first place and she like went back to basics she she stopped with all her experimental. She's like I'm going to give them what they want. where the Queen of the castle? How whether Queens of the Castle Castle? Oh aw I liked the trixie monocle song like royalty a girl power. I like like a command. And that's IT and they're just repeat it twenty times exactly yeah and this also dovetails so well with of course her most famous on which is God's God save the Queen God Save the Queen and Guess what the coin. The coin is me. I love that because that's actually twist in it this one just says the. We're the queen's this castle bow. What would have made this a real banger is if she he said we at the Queen's Castle Barrau and guess what this castle to they like a hot has the twists fall trixie monocle? So we're the queen. The Queen of this castle is Porsche going to her psychiatrist like wait. A minute queen's Castle completed this castle porsche or the drink yeah. It's like we must bow down to having a ten thirty appointments at a suburban therapy office. Yeah just distract me. Mike Castle my psychiatrist. How this strip mall psychiatrist bow? How so what? I thought was very fascinating right off. The Bat was a porsche is wearing a t shirt that has a heart and heart has two little is in it. So it's like it's I like porsches not just tearing you but her little heart is staring at you too but the therapist was wearing a necklace and like the pendant wasn't I also so so I I like how their clothing was having a staring contest. They were having a stare off. Porsche sad sad heart versus the one eyed therapist. Yeah all we needed was Tamra. Barney's evil eye hat really just low at. Yeah so so. The doctor's like well. I hope you feel as good as you look a little sad hearts. That's my shirt. She's like sorry. Well your face except gay to enforce. It's like well take take. It finally settled in. This is my situation like Oh Jesus Christ talk about something else. I'm bored. This is only episode for I know and the the thing is this is that she posted another photo with Dennis and the baby yesterday. So I mean it's also kind of annoying to distant knowing that she's going to get back together with him ultimately ultimately in real life. Yeah that idea like how porsche phrase phrases things like because the doctor says well do you think maybe you just trusted him too quickly glee and he didn't have to earn your trust because well knowing his dating history and should have considered it more but hell. When I was pregnant I was sitting on the catch and trying to grow our daughter? Just thought those the funniest putting that is funny watering herself. She's like she's like farm-to-table able restaurant mad. That someone's late for the reservation. Mike sh she probably also was trying to grow planned at the same time yes he was trying to keep a succulent alive. She probably thought the entire time she had a succulent inside her. And then she's like. Oh my God has a baby so Tauruses like when he made these decisions he threw. What's aside yeah? Yeah Yeah Body Blah and the therapist is basically like well so you know just one thing to consider. Is that like you're like really upset right now and do you WanNa make a life changing decision when you're upset. I'm like isn't that how she makes all her decisions. Yeah that's actually good. That says she got married in the first place. Why not get divorced that way? Yeah exactly so. If you're poor and you can't make an a life altering decision is in when you're upset and you're never going to make a decision. I mean you're right. It's sports so the doctor's like well I'm not saying get back with him but for the sake of the baby. Can you forgive him Mike. Yeah basically what she's saying is. Do you want your baby to have hotdog money for college or not. Listen then don't you want your baby to hotdog university okay. Well it's going to be a strong recommendation from the Hawk hotdog king himself so thinking about that. Think about that before you close the door and dentist that Dole has altered. No I'm not talking about it a little door because you know that Porsche was like literally locking your door in her house there. I fixed it I know. But and she's the kind of personal wonders why she's always being robbed 'cause she's like toys faulted and she's like but could you forgive she's like maybe like well that's not a bolted Thatta Baltimore now that is a door that has actually just like closed at closed and locked maybe generally but also like easily picked. Yeah it's just like a screen door. It is a screen door. It's a screener that actually has a hole in it Google.
