Census Bureau: No Middle Eastern Or North African Check Box

"Here in this country the twenty twenty census is rolling out nationwide this week now for decades the U. S. government has categorized people with roots in the Middle East or in North Africa as white despite an ongoing push from some advocates that is not changing for this year's census we're bringing you an updated report about the controversial decision first may two years ago here's NPR's Hansi lo one this scene kabbadi left Yemen as a young girl with her family seventeen years ago and after they settled in New York City she noticed that when you fill out an official form here in the U. S. they're always seem to be a question about race and ethnicity everywhere you can see when you go to a doctor will schools you always get this option and but he said she wasn't sure which check boxes for her honestly it was hard for me to pick I was like oh my god what should I push I put Asian or the other about he says because Yemen is on the continent of Asia she settled on Asian and when she can on form she writes in Arab but she says on the twenty twenty senses she would have like to mark a box for middle eastern or north African it should be there because they had many nationalities so why is not there is unbelievable in twenty eighteen the U. S. census bureau decided against adding a middle eastern or north African category now because officials said they need to do more research that disappointed Mohammed Barakat he works at the Arab American family support center based in Brooklyn every member is grappling with the race question as a first grader my parents came from Palestine I didn't really know English and so whenever there is paperwork I had to do it and on one of those forms I remember seeing white and then in parentheses anyone from the Middle East or North Africa which are the regions along with Europe that the U. S. government defines as white the better catch was perplexed he went to school in acid teacher if you could answer Asian is like well if you want to put a single had reading you should polite and so I went around asking other teachers and they all set your white your what I like but look at me that I can't says he doesn't look white and he's culturally not white but sometimes he marks white if he sees the Middle East and North Africa listed next to it or he looks for a box for others so we can write in Arab this makeshift way of answering surveys means that information about people with roots in the Middle East or North Africa is often hidden within data about other groups the fight right now is to say the category should be there because it will arrive at a better account Maya berry is the executive director of the Arab American institute which is trying to get a category added to the twenty thirty census form it's an issue that touches on a sensitive topic especially after president trump's travel bans against countries such as Iran Libya Syria and Yemen federal law prohibits the census bureau from releasing census responses identifying individuals for seventy two years but many in the middle eastern or north African communities in the U. S. worry about giving the federal government more personal information that's the burden that our communities had to they're trying to make a determination about do you advocate for the inclusion of a category or not Terry says getting a middle eastern or north African check box on the

2019 Kentucky Derby: Ranking every horse competing by their names

"Well, let's go back to the basics of horse racing in the great tradition. Of course, this is the the big gem of the triple crown to this is I mean, there's no bigger race that I know of in the world for people in America than the Kentucky Derby. So when you talk about how does this work. So you have how many horses are in the derby this year. They were at twenty horses into the most exciting to mention sports as you say, and it's one of the most wide open affairs in terms of no heavy favourite as it was last year with justify. Well, a lot of that having to do with Omaha beach being scratched the respiratory issue. Because everyone was believing that this was Omaha beaches race to lose and now Omaha beach is on the sidelines, which is very sad for the owners and the trainers who thought they had it. And and also they had been playing up a lot to World War Two veterans with Omaha beach. In fact, I've still been bringing in World War veterans visit the horse over in the backside of Churchill Downs in Louisville this week. So there was a lot of sentiment there behind Maho beach, but Omaha beaches out so who's the favorite now, actually favorite. The would be considered the number sixteen horse named game winner who is the two old champion west year and is trained by the same train as justify Bob Baffert. And fact, Mr. Bamford has three early. Morning favorites in game winner roadster and improbable all trained by Baffert or three favorites at this time. All right. Who's the long long on? So if you put it something down, you get a bigger payoff because the odds are so long. In the morning line to horses listed at fifty the one one being great magician and the other one being a horse. That's been racing in Japan. Jay name is master sensor. Would be the two longest shots at this time. Now does that play a role in the odds because he's been racing in Japan? And folks here just don't know anything about them. That. And the fact that itself the competition in Japan is not quite as competition that the horses have been racing here in the states. The Mark white. Why would somebody name a horse win win win? I mean is this horse is in the race tomorrow and fast break right next to game winner but win win win. You're just asking for it with that name. I guess it's better than naming lose. Well. Very very valid

"Enraged white men. Using the Nazi, salute and marching with torches shocked many Americans and since, then many of? Us have been doing a lot of soul-searching who, are we what are? We stand for and as a nation what do we tolerate The constitution upholds the rights of Americans to see almost anything no matter how distasteful. Without censure from legislatures the? Police or the courts are protections. For speech even hate-filled vitriolic speech go further than most. Nations in the weeks following Charlottesville many people made free speech arguments to defend the, white supremacists who'd, marched when people defend free speech what are they really defending that's a. Question Chris Crandall study he's a professor of psychology at the university of, Kansas we started? By talking about an incident that happened a few, years ago before Charlottesville In two thousand fifteen members of the sigma alpha. Epsilon fraternity at the university of Oklahoma were caught on video singing a racist song They were saying there will. Never be a n word in SAE and they were seeing happily and clapping along about the exclusion of African Americans from the fraternity the video of the song was put on Facebook. And it spread around the campus and the two song leaders of the fraternity who, were captured on video were expelled from the university and the fraternity itself was shut down on the, campus of the university of Oklahoma and there was really a media firestorm about. Their singing the song? In, the aftermath of the incident one of your, graduate students noticed something unusual about the responses to the incident what did, you, notice yeah Mark white was. Following this on the internet and he looked at the tenor of the comments and people were saying well this is simply free speech these. People, have a right to say these things because Americans have the right, to free speech But underneath the surface in, the background or sometimes right out of the forefront it really looked like what people were doing. Was justifying the content of what was said not the fact that they have the, right to say something freely but rather that they seem to be justifying the racist speech itself by. Giving an account hey free speech that allowed them to do that without punishment now, it's what pointing out of course at the first amendment protects people against government intrusions on free speech, at doesn't actually prevent private companies or universities from deciding what is or isn't. Acceptable speech in the? Workplace, or on a college campus but setting aside, that distinction you conducted an experiment where you had fallen shares listen to, racially, charged commentary and you evaluated. Whether they would reach for free speech arguments to defend it what walk me through the experiment Yeah so in one version of the experiment we did several of these. People read about somebody who wrote something on Facebook that was deeply, racist for example a barista wrote on Facebook that the black customers were problematic that they, were, noisy and rude and other racially stereotypical actions and the. People, on the study read, that the, person had been fired for posting this racist. Speech in the other condition people read about a guy complaining about customers but no racial information was given so the same behavior was described but the racial, alma was a radical and, so the question was do racial attitudes of our, participants determine how much they're going to defend the speaker in the racialist condition the more you had negative. Attitudes towards African Americans the straw Longer you endorsed free, speech as a justification for why the person should have. Been. Able to say that without being fired, so that suggests that racial attitudes might be behind free speech defense but you might say quite easily. That's simply, a correlation I'm not impressed maybe people who have negative racial attitudes are also libertarians and they believe that free speech is. Super important and they're just simply expressing that the problem with that argument is when you remove the racial content from the. Story so the in the condition where the, guy complaints about customers but there's. No racial helmet racial attitudes correlate, zero with free speech defense it seems. That people pull them out, and deploy them when they're appropriate. So people pull out free speech as a defense when they're defending racist. Speech but not when they're defending simply aggressive.
