"You're worried about the bears? A little bit. You see Santa Barbara almost beat creighton in a first round game a couple of years back. A team that won't be intimidated by this and Baylor is two and four over its last 6. So in terms of the Alabama's path through this region, I actually think that the two and the three and the four in this region are not all that intimidating and Baylor falls into that category for me. I mean, I know they've dealt with injuries, but man. They are not the same defensive team they were two years ago when they had Mark vital and davion Mitchell playing defense. I mean, from a defensive standpoint. Golly, they missed those guys. The offense is great. The backcourt is awesome. But the defense is wolf. So what is your sweet 16 elite 8 and the winner of the south regional? How's your bracket unfold? Yeah, so I've actually got Alabama, Charleston, NC state, Arizona, getting to Louisville. And then from there, it's an Alabama over Arizona. So a little chalky on my end, but if you're seeing this Alabama team in person at the SEC tournament in Nashville, my question going into that week was, is this a team that you need to over time to beat South Carolina and then lost to Texas a and M in the regular season finale or is this the team that rose to number one in the a people for the first time in 20 years this season? And to me, they answered that question pretty resoundingly, even amid all the off court hoopla surrounding them. So Alabama's supremely talented, incredibly long. And I do to a certain extent by the narrative they want you to hear about their team, which is that on the court, they are an unselfish and type of team that likes each other. And I don't doubt that they've bonded in some ways through all this stuff. And I think there is a camaraderie there, and I do think they have the intangibles, obviously, to go with the talent to make it out of this region. So Alabama, you know, you kind of got to hold your nose to do it, right? But I think they, I think they are the team in this region. Yeah, this is where, you know, you just have to separate the basketball stuff from the other stuff. I think it's shameful, frankly, the way Alabama has handled this entire situation. I still think Alabama's an awesome basketball team. And I like you have them coming out of this region. I got Alabama San Diego state in the sweet 16. I've got crate and Arizona in the sweet 16 Alabama against creighton in the elite 8 in Alabama advancing out of the south to take a very complicated and uncomfortable awkward story to the final four in Houston. And yes, I have Alabama playing in the national championship game. Against Houston, if you've seen my bracket, I've got Houston winning at all, but obviously there's nothing far fetched about Alabama winning this. They have proven over and over again as the outright SEC champs and NCC tournament champs that they are legitimate national championship contenders. I agreed with the selection committee, Alabama should have been the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament and now we'll get to see if they can make it out of the south regional. I do think they're apparent path to getting there is simpler, not simple, but simpler than any other number one seeds. Like I feel safer about Alabama getting to the final four than I do any of the other number one seeds, which is perhaps sensible and appropriate given that the crimson tide are the number one overall seed in the 2023 NCAA. "I think they are the best defense. I know that LSU right now is rated as the best defense, but putting this way Baylor lost mark vital and davion Mitchell and got better defensively because Kendall Brown and Jeremy sohan and all of those guys came and allowed them to be more flexible. And I think that that speaks to the value of positional size defensively in length and athleticism. Like it is such an enormous benefit that Kendall Brown, like to me, that is the difference between what I would take Kendall Brown over Johnny Davis, like it's much harder to be 6 foot 5 and make a defensive impact. There needs to be 6 foot 8 and make a defensive impact like Kendall Brown kit. And that team, it's like a 40 minute shell drill of rotations, traps, force and fumes into bad situations. And for Kendall brand specifically, he is like so bad. He's like a shark. Like he always has to stay in motion, but he dies if he stops. He never stopped. If you watch him, like he's always moving. Offense defense file called whatever. It's like his feet are smooth and he's on the balls. And he's bouncing around he's trapped and he's running he's cutting through what I am concerned about and what we talked about here a little bit. In the context of a top ten pick is the offense. Yes, he's shooting 70% for the field. Like 71%. He's like second country, which is outrageous, but he doesn't look at the rim on the catch on many possessions. He doesn't try to create unless someone else is creating for him or he catches it versus things shifting defense. He's going to reverse the ball almost as soon as he touches it. Baylor runs that high dribble weave, and he's contentious weaving. Like he'll just weave all day. Like, oh, here we go. And then he'll wait and go back door is a great cutter and he'll catch and dunk it. So because of this, his points per possession and his field goal percentage is through the roof. I mean, there's picking your spots, and there's whatever he does. I tweeted this last week. He had his shot chart is legitimately everything in the paint. He's taken like ten three pointers. He has taken mid range jumper. So in terms of analytics, darlings, I don't know if that's still like the invoke thing. It seems like it changes by the minute sometimes with the NBA. I just for top 5 top 6 until that often gets there. I'm just slow to say he's there for me. He's probably top finished rain. I'm not saying he's 35th or anything like that. I love the tools. So when he brings a table, defensively, it's just, if I was like a contender, I'm trying to think of somebody who would like have a top 5 pick and just need like one connected piece. Good examples like Golden State. Golden State had the picks ahead last year. I would take it with that come and go pick like no problem. Perfect. Like just past a curry clay, pool, draymond, whatever, like, connect that play defense perfect. But for the teams that are there right now and I don't have in front of me, I'd want more of like a foundational offensive guy to get my team going. Yeah. I get that..

"That was played at a crawl. I think there were like 60 possessions in that game, probably. And he thrived just making decisions, making the right pass, making the right read, he had 7 assists versus one turnover. The ability to play at different tempos, the ability to play at different play styles really, really stood out to me in a very positive way for Jaden ivy. Okay. Yeah. Any other strong thoughts here on IV before we go? No, that's good. He can play anywhere. He's going to drop in any type of offense, and he showed that place low play fast, play middle past he's there for it. Okay. My fact or fiction, here we go. Kendall Brown has solidified himself as a top 8 pick. In the 2022 NBA draft. I feel like we're enough odds from MGM right now. 8. Well, I had IV and I have to, I have to update my own kind of personal master board here. I had IV up to 5. I had Kendall Brown knife and I'd say one, two guys I bumped down. I want to say fiction, but for right here right now, the draft was tomorrow. I'm going say fact. He has another guy who had those early games and he didn't know who was for real or not because he had the vision. He exploded the rim. He cut backdoor. He moved well in space, but he's continued to follow up and even when the numbers aren't necessarily jaw dropping. He's still making winning plays and getting up and down and putting the pressure on the defense. I felt like paler and credit to Scott drew, you win a national championship. You lose some first roundish guys who were complete culture carriers and they're like, ah, let's kind of run the same playback with different personnel and do some tweaks and here we are again. We just want another championship to start the season. But for Kendall Brown, it's just a piece that has evolved if the jumper gets there too. It's an absolute no brainer for me, but who's on the board right now? It's him versus the next prospect. He's done too much and showed there's still so much just scratching the surface of what he is for me to say he's not there right here on November 26th. Yeah, I kind of got like, I don't wanna say killed, but people questioned this whenever I said it, but I brought up the idea that Baylor could lose Davy on Mitchell and Mark vital to of the finalists for national defensive player of the year. Last year and actually be better defensively this year, I think that they are better at offensively this year than they were last year. Yeah. The cool thing is it's so different though, too, right? It is not as based in Mark vital of being the anchor and rotating. It's like flying around and you don't know which guy in the wing is gonna kind of like get into flexion, jump on a loose ball cause a trap and they just keep coming at you too. Yeah, listen to these numbers in terms of defensive rating so far from Baylor. 84 9 77 four 56 one 73 5 against Stanford, who is a high major team sort of, I guess. 92 against Arizona state 87 four against VCU in 90.8 today against Michigan state. They've yet to allow above 92. Points per 100 possessions in a game this year. They are so good defensively because they fly around and I think Kendall Brown is an enormous piece of that. I think Jeremy shohan is an enormous piece of that as well, by the way..

"Yeah, no, totally. I think that's absolutely right. It's just that do we trust Kendall Brown to be as good defensively as Mark vital was within that scheme? Absolutely not. But I think that the pressure is going to be on him to do similar leads of what Mark vital did just because Matthew Myers is going to be playing more minutes in Matthew Myers, not inattentive defender. Let's go with that. He was like a a smith finalist defensive player of the year, whatever the award is titled all big 12 defensively. He can get there, but still very different type of players too. Yeah. I kind of like the and we'll talk about Matthew Meyer here in a second, but I like the combination of Meyer and Brown as a front court because I think that Brown brings a lot of what Meyer doesn't. I don't know that the counting numbers for Kendall Brown are going to be amazing if only because I think that Mark vital got really good at like knowing where to be in order to not take up like Jared butler's face and not take up davion Mitchell space. Kendall Brown is more used to being like the centerpiece quote unquote of an offense. And I just kind of worry if that instinct will come as natural to him early on when Jonathan Chan motto is going to be the guy like Roland hard to the rim. And Flo Thomas is going to be the guy role and hard to the rim. They'll switch it off, obviously, and then you'll have trauma chacha in the dunker spot and bomb the dunker spot with Kendall Brown set and screens. This coaching staff is good enough and creative enough to where I think they'll figure out ways to use Kendall Brown. And I think he's going to be really good. The thing that I just can't get past is when I watch Kendall Brown, I'm like, okay, I don't feel comfortable with you as a shooter yet. I don't really feel comfortable when you put the ball on the ground. So that's actually kind of a long way to go developmentally offensively for where the NBA is going. But you need a really good point of kind of matching and pairing him with Matthew Meyer because his strengths are his weaknesses and vice versa. So if you have those two guys on the wing, may be Myers more offensively a three in a creator and then defensively, he can be the four and gargas Kendall brand threes.

"Ten and 7, you know, like that's literally what just kind of looking at now. That's literally what horrific has the projection at like ten points 6 rebounds. Like people aren't going to be like wildly excited about your body walker, I feel like you won't think based at 6 8 you're not. We just talked about each bar Smith that if he did that at auburn, we could still say he might be a lottery pick. I don't think jabari walker is a lottery pick with those type of numbers. His size. Right. Yeah, honestly, if jab smith's only like 10.6 rebounds a game, I don't know that he's going in the lottery. It's a flash's business and industry. He gets in a workout looks the part. It's threes. Yeah, it used to be right. For the post too much, the guard shot too much. The narrative game could happen. So you brought up jabari Smith there. Another one of the great athletes in the 2021 recruiting class was Kendall Brown, who's going to Baylor. Where do you fall on Kendall Brown? Because I have kind of struggled to place him a little bit. I think it's a really interesting fit within like the Baylor. So yeah, totally, totally. The Baylor thing is, yes. I agree just based on their roster, too. And they're not. They've never been their hand is nervous to rush it with players and freshmen. They like red shirted day in Asia, who's pretty good. I'd like Minnesota like he could be pretty good. At least in this era of Baylor. Like in the past eras like with guys like perrie Lloyd. I'm talking championship transfer you good old stale old play Mark vital, who's an NFL tight end now. Like that kind of style of Baylor. Because Kendall Brown is this bouncy wing that finishes alley oops like on the way down, like a head above the rim type of athlete, very good defender and very, very good instincts reap passing and passing lens early, shooting the gap. He was his high school's all time leader in scores. I'm sorry, steals. The jumper is a too bad, just like slow to get it off for at least a little bit slow. I see kind of more of a fore and that's where we're talking about him here until the ball handling is tighter. With Baylor, I will say, I don't think it really matters positionally where he is because everyone sort of flies around and recovers on the court, but it's going to take time. He's going to need some development too. Yeah, I had a temptation to think of him as like this class's Greg Brown. Early on, when I watched him, but he's not that. Like he's more mobile. I think he plays more as like a combo forward. Yes. Because of that defensive intensity and that ability to and actually give real high level value on that end whereas Greg Brown didn't really do that at the high school level in a real way. But like very similar offensive concerns I think to what Greg browny sorry GE I think Kendall's just a little bit leaner and like you can play them at the three in a pinch, like I never want a Greek round to play the three, like ever..

Absolutely. I mean listen, I remember the first time I saw this team This kind of core group in person was a year ago November in Myrtle Beach and maybe Stella Nova and I fell on it wasn't exact same team. Obviously Adam flag. What year was it was? You know that some new pieces, but the core was the same of Jerry Butler Macio Teague marked vital and I remember telling Scott drew a home game. I thought he had something special here and that was early on that was back, you know right after Thanksgiving and I picked him to win it all this year. I picked him before the season. I picked him before the tournament wage. I just felt their guards were so dominant pump and they had four of them and they complement each other very, well. They moved the ball. They're very unselfish not the Gonzaga is but I just felt like their guards as a group. We're better than gonzaga's guards and Jalen Suggs was never going to see anything like Davion Mitchell. He had never seen anything like that before and that dude off. Listen, you love Marcus Smart. "You can defend the perimeter you can find those pretty easily but it's hard to find guys who can shoot and defend the perimeter at the same time it like an exceedingly high level toughness you off. And like you can find the right guys like a marked vital like Mark vital was a really what Mark title was like a four-star recruit wasn't he? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, probably top 100s. Yeah. Yeah, like we don't think of him like that now but like Mark vital was what probably like the third biggest recruit on this team back when he was a recruit ninety seven years ago time. Yeah. So yeah, like this is how I would build my roster. So I guess we're like preaching it's preaching to the choir on some level. You know what I mean? Sure and as a coach, I would like a to that the the losses they lost at Kansas on senior night and Oklahoma State in the Big Twelve tournament the losses do help kind of create this this manufactured beef to this artificial bus against them think we're still annoyed was doing earlier in the year with like the wind shares that we really won the Big Ten. It's like you guys are forced the country like why do you make it up stuff? But hopefully that was a motivating peace and from a building. A roster everything you said and then the play that that stands out to me which may sound like a little bit crazy. They're good for like a winning player to a game with a guy diving out of birth for a save and last night was Macio Teague. He he Dives out of bounds saves it recovers for closeout cross-court in blocked a shot be closed out in the guy missed. Like there was the type of of winning actions that page also separate two. Yep. I'm really interested in who's better if that happens. Listen, I don't think I don't want to say this but I think it's true like sweet sixteen matchups aren't awesome and dark out. "Was that good? That was the last decent team. They played was December 26th was the last team that they thought Kansas early Kansas. We know wasn't very good. They play West Virginia, Iowa in Virginia now, they're a great team. But again, like Virginia's not great can box isn't great. Now they beat them all and they beat him all pretty handily so we know gonzaga's a great team but it's not like they've run the gauntlet here by any means know we were deprived of a game with beige doing a culture which would have been very interesting. I'm glad we didn't get it cuz now I want to get it in the national title game and Baylor. Would you agree? I think they have survived the thigh any meal you have to admit that three-week options would go get they lost twice. They didn't look the same. We said, oh, they're not the same the team. I've been watching in this tournament. That's pretty damn. Good. Yep. I picked him to win at all. I talked to Scott through the other day. And and and the one thing he said was listen, we came out of the pause. They played a game after two practices and he said and then everything was jammed up because of the pause. So we're playing a bunch of games in a short period of time so we didn't have a chance to practice. It was play a game prepared for the next game play the play the next game maybe have one practice in between age for lucky. So they didn't have a chance to get better back to what they were defensively and that's honestly the the differentiator between Baylor and Gonzaga and Baylor and a lot of other teams is their defense can be so good. I mean, they've got arguably you could say two of the top five defensive players in the country and Davion Mitchell and Mark vital and I think Villanova is going to be in trouble here. I think it's finally going to catch up to him the injury to convalesce Mark vital where he plays hard then yeah. Yeah, he place I hate I'm trying to think he he's there have been lots of there's there's On the NBA for him just on on his body size and and and and the way he attacks the game. Yeah, he's six eight or six seven. What is he? Yeah, I think six seven P. Well, it's I hope there's a spot for him cuz he he'll I'll tell you why he's why this guy's you bring it. "They're pretty darn close. But like losing to Kansas at Kansas. Like I don't even see that as a as a derogatory remark either. It's like that that's as good as a team program and you're coming off color pause. Yeah. No absolutely not. I totally agree with you like no no problems with that loss. No problems with them having to play a tight game against Iowa State coming off of the covid-19 pass this Baylor team genuinely should be remembered as one of the best teams of the last decade in college basketball no matter where this goes from here if they lose as long as she gets the Sweet Sixteen at least right? Like let's let's not lose in the second round of the tournament here Baylor and then make us all look like assholes but like right it's only like this is an unbelievable team as long as they get to the Sweet Sixteen. I feel like they're going to be remembered as an utterly elite team within the context of the last decade of college basketball, I mean birth Our Mitchell Teague Mark vital Cham with Joshua who I feel like nobody has figured out how to say the name yet. Come on guys. It's not that hard. I get that. It's every day John but we can we can pronounce his name and then the emergence of Matthew Meyer has been a really interesting thing to track. So this team is unbelievable. I think that's God deserves an immense amount of credit. But even more than Drew who I think has gotten the Lion's Share of the credit this year because people always want to anoint the coach, right? They always want to be like, oh my God, what an incredible job you did in Scott drew did do an incredible job of fostering this talent and keeping it all together. I mean, these players are ridiculous. They have a shot to have multiple first-round picks here and they have multiple guys down the road that I think look like draft picks, but I will credit Scott truth what they've done in identifying Talent via French market via phone number. Recruiting kids out of high school that have a chip on the shoulder that feel like they're overlooked guys are transferred even being at UNLV and saying they didn't get the right. I'd say exposure to playing their style and they mold them there in Baylor and like I love the MARC vital story Mark vital committed as a sophomore in high school and he played on our Under Armour circuit marked vital was a guy who would like a loan in just for dunk contests..

Mark Vital scored a career high 19 points for the Bears, while Damien Mitchell added eight with nine assists.
