"Welcome to the NASCAR NBC podcast. I'm your host Nate Ryan and so glad to be joined for the first time this season by our resident Hall of Famer on NASCAR NBC Dale Jarrett, DJ. Welcome back to the show. Welcome back to Charlotte. Live in Phoenix full time. So good to see you here. Yeah, thank you. Glad to be back and always interesting to come back and catch up on things. I look at things from a different perspective sometimes whenever I'm away from everybody and kind of away from the scene a little bit and so I'm interested to see and hear about comments that people have to say in this part of the country because believe it or not, even when the race isn't in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area, there's a lot of fans out there that come up to me and talk about that. So what led to be back. So before we delve into the scene here, what's the scene been like in the Phoenix area where I presume you're playing a lot of golf these days, enjoying the weather. Yeah, yeah. I wish I were playing better, but the golf game is not very good, but I do play the weather is fantastic. Just really enjoying the time there. But fans are excited out there. As I think they are and showing us all over the country with what is happening. I will say that before the season started as people ask me my opinion of the new car. I was very hesitant because I really wasn't sure what may come of this and how it may perform. But I've been more than pleasantly surprised with how the competition has been. So people are recognizing that even fans that I'll call more casual fans that they're excited about what they've seen to this point and what may come as the drivers and teams get more custom with these cars. Definitely want to get into the new car in the next gen discussion with you DJ and we were just talking about before we got started here. That enthusiasm and the good racing that they've had this year and certainly that was evident on Sunday at Richmond Raceway and definitely want to talk about that on the NASCAR NBC podcast with you here today and I want to start DJ with the way the race unfolded was interesting and that you had these long green flag runs. You had the caution breaks, but it came down to essentially divergent strategies where Denny Hamlin makes an extra pit stop in the final hundred laps William Byron tries to stretch it. And it works out that Hamlin's strategy is better. What did you make about just how the whole 100 final laps unfolded and how you think the drivers handled it. Because if you're in the position of William Byron or Mark trex junior and you're being asked to stretch, I'm sure it's much different than Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick, where you've got tires that were almost 50 laps fresher. Yeah. And so let's start there in the fact that as a driver with fresher tires, very seldom are where they put in a position where there were cars that were faster than them that was costing them time, whereas if you were William Byron and many others Martin Truex Junior who were the first two there, they were having to not only worry about racing each other, but pay attention to faster cars coming at them and a lot of times cars that hadn't been faster than at any point in time during the race, but because they had these new tires. And so that's costing you time on the racetrack. And so trying to figure what you're doing at that particular time and what you need to be doing is way more difficult than what Danny and Kevin Harvick were going through and the way the situation they were put in by their teams with this strategy because they're always moving forward. They're being the aggressors and making passes where the other drives are just kind of hanging on and trying to get the most out of it and trying to win the race at the same time. So fascinating to watch. Interesting that a couple of teams changed their strategy kind of midstream in the race. And I don't even know if it was midstream. It might have been three quarter stream into this race that they opted out of a similar strategy that Denny and Kevin employed later in the race that put them first and second. So I would have to think that some of them might look back and as we go to other races that may be similar and certainly as we go back to Richmond the next time that they'll be looking at things a lot differently. William Byron made his last pit stop with 89 laps to go and again, he had enough fuel. He had enough tire to a degree to get to the end, it was just going to be a matter, could he maintain the pace and ultimately he couldn't. So you've been in that situation DJ in terms of you've started hundreds of cup races. I'm sure you've been in this situation before that he's in. Did you know watching that at some point, okay, sorry about the 24 is dead in the water here. Strategy is not going to work. Yeah. I mean, you have that idea, but I'll have to say that there was a lot going on. And so I'm not just going to fault Fox in the commentators there for not picking up on Danny and Kevin a little bit sooner to get their progression through the field because I felt like that we were kind of led to believe in what we could see on TV that this was going to be a battle between could William Byron hold off Martin Truex Junior for the biggest part of that last run. And let's say the last 25 or 30 laps that we could see that Truex was gaining and they were mentioning that. But we weren't talking about and weren't being told about Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick slicing through the field at that point in time. Yeah, but there was so much other stuff going on. You had Larsen who was making an appearance up into the top 5 for Canada the first time yesterday and so you had to pay attention was he's going to be able to pull this off among others. So it's so hard when you're there own tires that are much older than many of the cars. And again, sometimes you're letting cars go or having to race around others that you aren't necessarily haven't been accustomed to during that particular race or even many other times during other races. And so you're not exactly sure what to expect from them because they're so much faster and how are they going to handle this situation? Where are they going to go and how much room do you need to give them? So your focus is lost on trying to make your best lap time sometime and exactly where you need to be. And that's the difficult part of employing that strategy. You just hope that you've built up enough to give yourself the opportunity at the end. And certainly sounds like all the things you got going on there, it would favor somebody with experience of veteran and we see the top two finishers are two guys. Over 40, Denny Hamlin, and Kevin Harvick, 47th victory, and his career for Denny Hamlin first and 12 races. It ends a streak of 12 consecutive winners under the age of 30. And it also was Denny Hamlin's first top ten of 2022. And I believe Kevin Harvick's first top 5. What do you make of all that? I mean, 6 races into the cup season. Did you think that Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick would be without a top 5 and then to see them finish one two at Richmond? Yeah, you wouldn't think that even with the new car and the adjustments as a driver. And even as veteran drivers because these guys are so talented, you just have to imagine that they're going to adapt pretty quickly to any changes, but we can see it has been a struggle. And I won't say that even though they finished first and second, that were they necessarily a top 5 car all day long.

"Everybody, welcome to NASCAR America. Championship week. Championship edition. Let's go with that. What a fun weekend this past weekend was. We're back with a show, obviously this show was about the fans. There should be plenty to talk about today. Call in. Praise your comments. We can put the number on the screen, be sure to call. We love them. There you go, 8, four, four, 6, two, 7, two, two, 7, 6, Kyle Larson, obviously, just an incredible job this weekend. So much fun to watch really how competitive is in my opinion all four drivers had a chance to win all four drivers at one point felt like they could win that championship. I feel like the race cycled at one point, everybody had a chance as you mentioned. And then there was kind of that moment that we knew was going to happen in the 5 team took it quite frankly. They came in fourth of the championship four guys. We can talk about good cars, bad car short runs, long runs, but all of those are just details in the story, the real story is motor sports is all about performance. Sports is all about human performance. I love the race cars Nate. I spent an entire lifetime working on them, but humans make this sport going in the end, 5 human beings jumped over the wall, change four tires faster than the other three teams went from fourth to first, and then we all know if you give Kyle Larson the lead that's a bad thing with about 25 laps to go. Right. He led the final 28 laps to because he is a world class elite driver. And of course, that is the story of the 2021 season, like how insanely talented this guy is. He had a season for the ages, but to your point, he takes the lead because of his team. And Kyle Larson, he won the championship, but he was given the opportunity to win the championship by his team. He didn't enter into that opportunity if not for his picture. He said it, you know, on error, multiple times with us that if the pit crew doesn't hit that money stop and change four tires and 11.8 .8 seconds. And if he doesn't get the number one pit stall, a day or earlier, by winning the pole position, he doesn't win the championship. Well, drivers talk about it all the time, but about how this is a team sport. And I think on Sunday, we saw it all play out on the biggest stage, how important everybody is on a team. It takes everybody to win championships and win races. But let's do this. Let's just go straight in to Kyle Larson and listen to what he had to say about the race. I can not believe it. I don't even think I'd be racing a cup car. A year and a half ago. And to win a championship is crazy. I gotta say, first off, thank you so much to Rick Hendrick, hit her cars dot com. Jeff Gordon, NASCAR. Every single one of my supporters in the stands, watching at home. My family, I got so many of my friends and family here. My parents, my sister, my wife and kids, oh, and a big give me crap. Month and a half ago about how I can't win a Cup race when he's there. So that had a lot of pressure, but there were so many points of this race where I did not think that we were gonna win and without my pit crew on that last stop, we would not be standing right here. So they are the true winners of this race. They're two champions. I'm just blessed to be a part of this group. Every single men are a person. Man and woman at Hendrick motor sports. This win is for all of us. And every one of you. So this is unbelievable. I'm speechless. So much fun to see that enthusiasm. Great burnout. Almost made a lap. That was his goal end up blowing the tires out. But let's do this. Let's go back and really look at how Kyle Larson got here because you said it Steve. It took a team effort. Let's go back and revisit what happened to him and how he got into this position when this race. Yeah, 312 laps, and there was gonna be a lot of flips when it comes to the, you know, different control of the race, who is controlling it, but the turning point for me was really about halfway through the race. You know, chase Elliott had control of it. He had just passed the 5 car and that's when it kind of all swapped. I think we have a piece here to kind of show how it all went down with the 19. Here it is. So right here, you go right here. Larsa has control of the race, right? But then the 9, he's gonna pass him. And at this point, I'm thinking this is what chase Elliott needs, right? We're inside the last fuel run everything's going good. We know green flag pit stops are gonna happen the 19 of Mark trex junior comes to pit road earlier than anyone expects, but while on pit road, Anthony Alfredo, big impact with the outside wall causing the yellow to come out, then it's a race off pit road the 19 right there is scored. You wait about three or four more cars. You're gonna see the leader of the race the 19 of chase Elliott. Somehow, Truex does a nice job staying on the lead lap. That turns out to be very important because then he'll assume the lead Nate when we come to the next restart. You have a pit stops. This seems silly, but the 11 billion 9 off pit road is a huge situation because then that cycles the 9 back another roll. Look at that. The two Hendrick cars are in the third road Jeff. They're not even in the front four cars. Well, that's exactly right. So this momentum shift was huge because you took the two cars that were slowest on a short run and you gave them track position. Elizabeth Atlanta test years ago that your dad and those guys put the left on the right and right on the left around the one lap, put a big lap down and said, and they left, right? In that the old story is that how that goes. Yeah. So if you intimidated everybody else, they were like, oh my gosh, we can't keep up with Earnhardt. Oh yeah. You can go out there and do that on Friday. You can already start the mind games a little bit. There you go. Big brands calling it Kyle Larson laying a lap down right at the beginning of practice. Mike Bagley from SiriusXM NASCAR radio he'll join us here on motormouth. Here's the championship four for the Cup Series this weekend and Phoenix those four drivers will race for a title. How did they earn their way in? Well, let's look back at the Martinsville race. After 34 events and almost 12,000 miles of racing, it's all down to a little half mile track in southwest Virginia to decide who joins Kyle Larson in the championship for I don't think you're ever safe unless you have a win. So we know that. Yeah, I mean, look at just how quick it can change. It's going to be tough. You look at any of those 5 guys that were racing against on points essentially. And any one of them 5 can win. So it's gonna be about a championship four race today just to get into the championship board. We got a chance to point our way in just depending on how things go and hopefully we can just be good enough control our own race and be at the front going for the win. You're the best guy under pressure I know. He's smart here, keep our nose and vendors on it. Somebody be watching the head. Green flag is in the air and mauritian hardens will Virginia. Already contact. Chase Elliott got into the back of the 19 of Mark trex junior. He slid up the racetrack. Denny Hamlin had to start at the back. He's actually below the cut line right now. Brad Blaney running in 7th place. Travel here, but I'll get you fixed up. Dating Hamlin's been alive. You have the 12. Right in front of the 11 of Denny Hamlin. Let on the break. It was a great run and if you laugh on my fan, the ball throw on an autoload, I'll turn to all four seconds. I'm still in all over career buffer Ryan Blaney. Damage now he has gotten contact from Austin Dillon. I don't even know what to do here. He's in a month with position struggling right now, the handling of that race car. Plenty of time to try to fix it here. From the get go, we're struggling getting to turn into two thirds and ready to track bar. That made it loose everywhere, except where I wanted to turn and put that bag try something else and at least closer, but all we're doing is compromise and at that point, as the running right now on the track, it's the 19 of Mark trex junior who is above the cut line and now Kyle Busch's below that cut line. But we did gain on it. Zero years. How about either out here? 18 has been dragging this whole group bag really bad. And shoveling all day in here Jones making contact all the way down the straightaway. This is going to be the fourth time that Chase has swept the first two stages in a race and with that chase Elliott now has locked himself in to the championship four. Kyle Busch got busted for speedy, gotta go to the back. Another half the race take care of himself will start working way forward. Pretty much went zero. I would think that I didn't really talk too much about the point thing, but we're about 14 or so out. So when the 12 car Brian Blaney Tyrell there got a left high rush. Because I don't know what to say about that. It's probably a lot of news. We know we're always gonna miss the other mystery kind of the head scratcher we're not really any different than how we've been here in the past and we've been really good. Just one really the right combination today. The water coming out of the 19 car saying is overheating. Get your radiator back. It's been on all day. Everything must be taken to 22, even got in track position here, but it just does not look like they may be at the speed. We fall hard to season. We just weren't fast enough. We were fast enough throughout the playoffs and then today kind of was another example of that. Now, the 11 fighting for the lead with a 19 and Denny Hamlin takes the lead here at Martinsville. We weren't winning car, but we were third fourth place car all day long, and that's where we ran and everything's going smooth and then you know the two in 18 come up there in the front kind of out of nowhere and I got some damage running out of the two car. Big damage to the 19 car, the left front. Huge, huge damage. Every spot that 19 loses is a point to the two car. Brad Keselowski knows exactly the task ahead of him. Gotta raise denying got loose and spun him out, I just all I could do to hold onto the car and feel bad for chase and he got caught up there, at least he's still good for next week. Tricks up the track. This is gonna cost him even more spots. More spots more points for Trent. He could be out of the championship board now. Like, oh damn, we're in big trouble here and then they say we're out. Just dig deep, just fight back and do all we could after that. It's Kozlowski and Kyle Busch up there into the championship board. We had a Hail Mary opportunity there at the end and just in materialized. So all in all, just proud of the effort we slung everything and anything at this thing today and just couldn't really make it come alive. For the lead moment actually gives him the bottom and Denny's gonna retake the lead. The 11 around. Didn't want to race this there. We had a good clean race. I moved up as high as I could on the racetrack to give him all the room I could. And he still can't drive. This is going to get crazy. He went to the bottom, fire went to the bottom also. That allowed the 19 of two action rolls to the top. Got a little break on that last restart, you know, a bunch of guys went to the bottom and I seen the hole up there and I was like, I gotta go for it. Put ourselves in a position and just wasn't quite strong enough there at the end. Checkered flag is out. Alex Bowman will win. Denny Hamlin not happy with the way Bowman raced him. Championship four going.
