And this is the one that slipped into vac availing created quite a scare, especially yesterday when it jumped the freeway. They've got a handle on the one that jumped the freeway. But now the fire is burning around the back side of Lake Berryessa. Then they fully expected to kind of merge in with itself. The Spanish fired her Spanish flat is 4100 Acres, and I'II has reopened. We should mention but in this particular fire, the complex fire 105 structures have been destroyed or 70 have been damaged, and there are still 25,000 structures that are threatened. "Mark Thompson, Chauffeur this Thursday, August 13 Still come this hour we've got it's the planet. Stupid news of the planet. There is a huge oil spill that you and I couldn't blame anybody for not knowing about it because it just gets crowded out of the headlines because You've got a Shall we say, controversial political situation in America right now, which crowds a lot of stuff that takes a lot of the media oxygen already. But also just with covert 19. So anyway, there's that going on, and it's the plan. It's stupid. That's what we call the segment coming up after the Ron Owens report. And I'll give you a chunk of Trump. That is a segment that is Sweeping our show. It's a fan favorite. Now we've got a lot of Trump's tough for those You are trump peas and you wantto Hear what what your boy is doing. We'll get to that. We were talking about uber and left. We did get a bunch of texts. I don't even know them. But you can help me with some of these have you if you want. You just don't know which one's toe you know. Focus on which ones not to. You can always text the show. For 15 80 88 10. Me. Oh, you got one from the 9 to 5 area code. All right. Shop home. Nine to on this listener is named Angel Uber should allow the option to either bet yourself in as an employee or with a different pay scale and shared medical benefits or stay as a contractor with higher pay and no benefits. That point's been made a couple of times today. Yeah. No, it's true. I mean, it seems that there's a lot of support for that. You also have the 9 to 5. This uber nonsense is driving me nuts. Every driver's signed on with over knew going in that it was an independent contractor opportunity without benefits. If they want benefits. Go get an 8 to 5 job. Well, that might have made more sense a few months ago before Kobe 19 But I hear you you're saying Look, that's that's the culture of uber Lift door dash, etcetera Grubhub, you know, fill in the blank. One from the 415 area code. Yeah, shout out to the city state wants money. But I wonder how much influence taxi lobbyists have had with the state pushing permanent hiring of uber and live drivers problems. The problem. The state of California is regulated by different agencies. One is the PUC. You know, and and so that's why and so they, There's a different standard. There's just I don't know why it's like that. But it is That's good information. Thank you for that bread. I mean, so you're it's not all it's not all rolled into the same legislative process. If you want to think of it that way or write or regulatory process might be a better way to put it. Ah, from the 917917 New York 917 Let me check on one setting. I thought, 917 like New York I thought it is. New York City. You're right. The Brown hadn't shot out to Manhattan, 917 I don't have the answer. Mark by wonderful uber rides will become more expensive if drivers are to become employees. That's the other part. It has to be kicked down. Look, whoever was already losing money on the rides, right? Right. It's not a It's not a winning metric right now. And this Throws it into entirely different category. But as I say the threat of a high tech behemoths like uber Lift door Dash Grubhub The the threat. That they're going to pull out of a city or hit pause. That's not new. Amazon did it. Amazon did it in Seattle, Remember, they were talking about that tax on Amazon forgot about that. Yeah. Yeah, you could find it and and Amazon said, Well, you know what? We're just not going. We're not going to build here. We're not going to. We're going to set up this big Amazon center here. And we're not going to do it now. So you're going to lose the tax base and you're gonna lose Amazon. All because you guys want you know this 1,000,000? I think it was Tax in any company that Ah Okay anyway, they did threaten it. Yeah, so it's not. It's not new. But it does feel a CZ, though they They will completely have to readjust their bottom line. If this Well comes to pass, and it seems as though it isthe Let me just Ah, last to comment on this from the 707 on the text line. If you want a text for 15 80 88. You just texted it. Rachel Mark, just to be clear. The amount that a company pays in workmen's compensation is a percentage of the gross pay. Maybe 12% of your gross paper individual. A. P. as a piece of both are free you don't have to have symptoms and it'll be a pop up basically until Saturday and I want to thank whatever textures as well I think from the five one zero area code kind of reminded us all to get five one oh for helping us love your listeners V. here is a tweet from Mother Teresa Richards on Twitter at mark T. live is my home Twitter handle and by Dan Dan twelve hundred actually posted something interesting a re tweet about those non medical masks no the non medical masks and the quality of masks and the grade of mask is something none of us knew six months ago exactly if I'd said to you well you know do you have any N. ninety five masks at your house really got much of what's an MP five mask I think that that's the only one I think people are familiar with just because of all the fires that we've had maybe actually we had a whole bunch of the masks at our place because as you know our our neighborhood burned yeah and it was an N. ninety nine masks interest today yeah there's there are masks that are designed to weed out particulate matter so there are gender but but you might be right maybe they maybe was a ninety five and I just didn't know the only one I know was a ninety nine but anyway the point is the subtlety on the differences associated with mask is something that we are now all conversant in and we certainly were not six months ago apart from there may be some experiences read says with the fires but the non medical masks this is again from Twitter do they actually do anything well yes yes they almost certainly do and there's an infrared photo of somebody sneezing or coughing it's a looks like a coughing actually and they particulate matter that comes out of their mouth with no mask and them then using the non medical mask okay this is this is not the M. ninety five and it is essentially blunts all of it in fact what they used to make the point was a paper towel this is just holding a paper towel in front of their mouth and the droplets are completely held in while it is video then are you watching now it's a it's it's yeah it's whether to still photos I see and you see in the infrared kind of the illuminated droplets a man with a paper towel you see that there are literally just two droplets that make it out so it only takes one right but but you know but viral load is important so you know it's it's not it's not clear enough to show that even one would do it but you're right the right you know it's certainly one is worse than none at all but yeah anyway it's it's interesting so thank you Dan for that way of what a massive even is that person wears a bandanna or no that's so that's known as so they're making a point which is something is better than nothing and so using a paper towel to illustrate it is my point I see they're showing that look this is just a paper towel we just grab this paper towel and it made such a substantial difference of something is better than nothing showed up that is the point there let's distortion Scott stories.

"What everybody mark Thompson here on KGO eight ten on this Monday in covert nineteen land just kind of keeping an eye on things that are covert related you know over nineteen has reshaped the way we live and in the city anyway the numbers are encouraging enough they say that they're going to speed up the re opening of salons bars and other activities related to same that's right I just saw the yeah that's the chronicles reporting that they're gonna move that date up to June twenty ninth yeah baby come all right now let's do it time they got to get a sign off from California health officials but they're saying that they're confident that the request which was submitted after getting permission from the board of supes that it will be approved that would mean a bunch of businesses would be allowed to resume operations hair salons barbershops as Brett says nail salons tattoo parlors I wonder if there's anybody who want a bad tattoo then they shut down the tattoo parlors and now they're gonna you know what I'm not as interns are used to me I think I think there are a lot of stories like that yeah you know I mean you may want to rethink things you know if you if you have a change of attitude or some you know what happens if radiated habit can K. all right judge judges you the judges off the off the chain thank our yes read it's great to have you back and now if you can just wait a little longer yeah you'll be able to do all those things hair salons barber shops tattoo parlors museums zoos bars with outdoor seating outdoor swimming facilities you'll be able to go to all those things soon in the city of San Francisco what do you think you think it's too soon I have no thought I I have no idea yeah I mean I think of their social distancing I think people are really as I said there's a reversion to the mean you know people are just going to behave the way they do and I think that's really what you're seeing has anything really changed in America we haven't picked up any kind of additional strategy in controlling Colbert nineteen we haven't picked up any contact tracing plans that are serious about really tracing and then producing a quarantine result at the end of it yeah we haven't really done any of that I mean it might be happening in some localities but I would say that America is just kind of gonna screw it yep we're just gonna go out and take our chances it would seem that's the case but behind the scenes the big county by county number of people who are being hired to do contact tracing is pretty phenomenal actually in in in the incident very successful instance in the bay area snow which is why when you compare the bay area cases to the number of cases in California it is amazing the difference yeah I thank you because you're right I mean I guess I'm speaking to the overall circumstance we face in America but you're right the bay area has been outstanding I think they're getting twenty four hundred tests today on average you mean in what at first California up from June fourteenth through June nineteen this is San Francisco okay twenty four hundred tests daily and one to two percent of those came back positive so with those numbers they can begin to open things up yeah I think they've hit their goal as far as contact tracing and also the hospital numbers the hospitalizations and writing the I. thirty six people hospitalized for covert nineteen in intensive care units as Brett says that's right so in view of that things were open earlier yeah what we're way ahead of the rest of the country of course they're still hot spot in southern parts of the state southern California LA it's got a real problem but they're speeding up the reopening salons bars and get that tattoo ready all right R. that story about the super rich and some other super rich stories as we continue with that that's rich segment we'll do it next on KGO one of Hollywood's most successful directors Joel Schumacher has died in New York the director of movies from St Elmo's fire to Batman forever was eighty years old the US has passed a tragic milestone in the coronavirus crisis more than one hundred twenty thousand people have died meanwhile White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany says president trump was only joking at his Saturday night rally about slowing down testing for the virus it was a comment that he made in jest it's common that he made and passing for specifically with regard to the media coverage in pointing out the fact that the media never acknowledges that we have more cases because when you test more people you find more cases the FBI is investigating the discovery of a noose found in Bubba Wallace's garage stall at the Talladega superspeedway Wallace fonts excessively for a ban on the Confederate flag is.

"You can now listen at home by simply saying Alexa play KGO eight ten now here's mark Thompson on a wireless number eight we're going to start a show I'm telling you people have been with me the ball you know it's going to be a tough crime we're going to have a show five four here here here the everywhere on KGO radio mark Thompson here that was a tribute that was really being done on all the cumulus stations so if you're listening to a lot of different radio stations across America and on the west would one network that's what you heard a tribute two George Floyd but it was clearly more than that he was a a discussion of race relations and the wounds associated with racial biases that have existed since the beginning of this Republic yeah that aired on more than four hundred radio stations across the country two things stuck out to me is that how long the list of names is and then the second one mark at the end when he said now you get a sense of how long those eight minutes and forty six seconds were test yeah yeah I was chilling he said a couple of other things along the way there that I've you know it's kind of depressing like it just seems as though it's such an intractable problem but you do need to take steps to get the problem solved in increments you know you need to make progress and it appears that there is progress being made and why I say that in in the sense that there is now clearly the political capital to do it at least in in one sense mmhm and there is a momentum to do it so I mean that's right those two things probably overlap you got a text from the four oh eight area code how about next time we change the world before anybody gets murdered yeah exactly yeah exactly you know there was a a similar show of support for change and recognition of the problem from congressional Democrats you know that many took a knee at the capitol for eight minutes and forty six seconds as you're aware mmhm that's on the front page of the the chronicle this morning and the thing about that you know those who are cynical and I got this both from the right and the left both who who who one let me up on you know both groups like me up on Twitter or eat responses from media and I appreciate that I like to hear from everybody but what I was hearing and this is essentially what I was hearing from both sides was yep you know politicians just doing their thing photo op really you know as they all taken a at the emancipation hall and they observe this moment of silence the one thing I would say about that and I and by the way I would not dispute the fact that it was a political moment and they're trying to make a statement and the most cynical of us would say they're just exploiting a moment for political gain but but I'm gonna I'm gonna push back on that a little bit and I would suggest that this you need to in many ways message through symbolism so the idea that you take a knee with these other legislators and that you on our this memory of George Floyd by the way here's something again I'm related March thirteenth Jim Jones your drone to honor someone who passed away when you honor the memory of someone who passed away they're very memorialized somebody so when you say I'm doing this in memory of someone in memoriam of someone that is when they passed away okay when you honor someone they are still alive now you don't have to follow that I'm not a lot of people don't but I'm just telling you if you want to be right about it that's the way it goes exactly if you gonna honor somebody who is passed tragically you honor their life their memory right so when they say as they do in the Chicago Tribune Neil and observe a moment of silence to honor George Floyd and victims of racial injustice you can honor victims of racial injustice because we don't know whether they're alive or or or or dead but you can't honor George Floyd you can honor the memory of George Floyd again I've spent sixty seconds longer on this and I want to mention again points that's a good but let me make the big point which is so messaging is important and emerging is important and so you may think it's a political stunt but you know what it's important there's a lot of political messaging that is stumped like you're looking for a photo op moment I mean they're not always as clunky as you know clearing out Lafayette park at the hands of you know these effectively rubber bullets or whatever they were and these effectively tear gas although not really tear gas I gotta smoke whatever so you can hold a Bible I mean that's a clunky weird stupid in my view photo op but messaging like that is important show messaging like this where you're at everybody was on their knee in that emancipation hall and they observed a moment of silence to honor the memory of George Floyd is that I do think has importance I think it.

"Ten good morning mark Thompson here San Jose lifting curfews curfews lifted actually on in a couple of different areas of morning that's right both of San Francisco and San Jose just lifted their curfews this morning at five AM so that's really just a few minutes ago these were put into place in order to deal with protests that sometimes turn destructive let's go to San Francisco first where mayor London breed issued that curfew on Sunday after looting and vandalism in the city but yesterday she announced an end to the order saying the city will continue to facilitate any peaceful demonstrations in San Jose the city council voted to amend the curfew after some residents argued it violated their civil rights including the right to assemble the San Jose police chief has said the curfew is a tool to help keep the peace and crack down on crime some business owners are worried about more looting now that the curfews over but mayor Sam Liccardo made it clear they could put in place again if needed so now we're just getting back to the good old days and we're all just kind of sheltered at home is a combination my gosh I I you know I would say gosh I sure hope the protesters will go out to get tested just to trying keep everybody safe we got to know if you're carrying this thing since you put yourself at risk for you know a really good cause but you're still you're still putting yourself at risk email I want to know yesterday you said another two senators came out against the photo op stump the trump yes said well actually three of them okay Mike and she she said you didn't say who they were upset but safe quickly please.

"Alexa play KGO eight ten once again here's mark Thompson this yeah yeah G. it is Friday and we'll get to Friday fabulous Florida in a a minute or two mark Thompson here on KGO eight ten by the way I just got an email you want to read bridges again well first I can call anytime four one five eighty eighty eight time OR one five eighty eighty eight ten but if you want to reach us by email you can do that and it's KGO radio market G. mail and some of which is to actually ask asking what I can still do the giveaway and yes we are next hour the cafe regal mmhm now we have a some breaking news CNN says Brooke Baldwin is that testing positive for corona virus no wow yeah she's with note you know obviously CNN midday anchor business that might that might spread I mean with Chris Cuomo no that's right that's right Chris Cuomo yeah that's a couple of high profile cases yeah however you you sent me that but I can't get into that the this a Google doc because it's asking for some kind of permission is that here you get locked out of your own show sheet I mean I've heard first first producer our asking to look something up because I one just follow up on a story about homelessness it as you know if you just joined us late the homeless community in San Francisco's been hit now with their first cover nineteen diagnosis and of course that that serve just gonna be probably catch like wildfire and so I was just asking her to check on certain ordinances it'll all make sense once I get it but I offer I can't get into that file so anyway I want to mention one other sort of high profile thing that's happening here in the city and that's the scooter company bird they laid off five forty percent of their workers and out I kind of lose track position bird here in the city or not my wrong about that but I think if they are there with the the rental of scooter the company you know there are a couple of companies several companies but bird was a big one and early to the party and that they laid off employees four hundred of them is a big deal and that's forty percent of their work force but the way they did it was kind of wild it was in a zoom meeting around now yeah I guess how else can you do it though if you got a self distance maybe you're right maybe I shouldn't look down on that the way I do but boy that I miss you it's a two point seven seven billion dollar company though there's no but I I I don't know man I just think they're land somebody off that's just it's tough that is brutal you know it's here's the other thing that modified as Florida so one of the things we we do as a family together my up my girlfriend I Courtney we've you know she works all age you can work from home and and and all this kind of thing but we together we watch the show called succession okay and it's really a good show and it's got a little bit of sense of humor but its kind of dark and it's really like a Murdoch family okay so think about that sort of family and their talk everybody's kind of jockeying for succession rights for control of this big media company but anyway there's a scene and this just happened where the guy comes in and he looked at a start up he lays off everybody at one time in a big company meeting goes okay everybody you're all fired he says and and they all approach like this is a joke and it's a couple of me even set a lot it's a joke and I turned to my girlfriend the court and I said that would never happen that would just never happen nobody's going to call a meeting and go guys you're fired you're all fired really what what you know ones that cruel are they and then I see this just a day later that four hundred employees are laid off and terminated on mass during the two minute gym session only went on for two minutes that is so sad so we we need to see this on the heels of me just making a point of no no no no no no companies that brutal no they are anyway when I think that probably will play out a lot because you can't meet face to face with people people are working from home how else are you going to handle the budget cutbacks and things like that and they say like everything we're experiencing now this is a quote this is a sub optimal way to deliver this message and unfortunately your role is impacted by this decision the decision to you know cut back and Friday will be your last day with a bird this is the way it was that's this is literally what they said in the message anyway well that's that was all done in a this you know thrown together resumes seminar did you see this too right right after they were deliver the message the now former employees there work taught the laptop's begin shutting down abruptly they were remotely locked out of the company systems I mean again I guess that's a sign of the times and that's just a waste of his time but it just feels like it's got a certain brutality and coldness to it yeah but anyway all right coincidentally zoom is in Friday fabulous Florida it is Friday we feature news from Florida Friday fabulous Florida it's time.

"Say Alexa play KGO eight ten once again here's mark Thompson mark Thompson her on KGO eight ten watching everything from the markets are down fourteen hundred points in and bear market territory to the changes in public policy when it comes to meetings and all the things associated with coming into contact with others who frankly might have the ownership in an effort to contain the onus for treatment gatherings associated with a lot of these events around the bay area are being curtailed you know this virus it starts in your throat but he gets down into your lungs you know how it works right it is it's brutal I saw an interview with a physician's assistant who came down with cove in nineteen and he is thirty two years old he was perfectly healthy didn't smoke didn't drink but he's hospitalized now he's got pneumonia in one lung he's afraid it's going it's going to take his life I mean is that we want but that is alarming because all we hear is it's generally the older population and people with existing issues some kind of extenuating circumstance regarding their health mmhm so when you hear that story it's like yikes and as I mentioned yesterday and a mention on you know since this thing broke out what you're worried about is you're worried about the health care system being overrun but so many people of the sort that you just mentioned Brett being sick and needing hospitalization and we're running out of the room and the infrastructure to treat all those people and that's why you're seeing hospitals all around the bay and beyond setting up triage units outside odd to have extra beds just in case they're overrun by people who have coronavirus yeah I need to talk they talk about the Chinese and how they built all those hospitals and that those were those were that was actually awful what they did they they they slapped together these hostile but what's amazing the Chinese will also in ten days yeah yes and and the collapse of the clutch sentences yeah talk about terror regime as we do from time to time news about the planet so much going on and today we thought we check in on our planet it's a segment we call it's our planet stupid planted some calming nature what about the plan I'm living breathing planet capable of sustaining whatever life forms we see fit to deposit on it judging by the pollution content of the atmosphere I believe we have arrived as the planets Jupiter is the planet stupid where it's been so long I forgot all about that that's awesome the comma matters Belinda Waymo the joins issues and environmental journalist videographer an advocate and please tell us Belinda that this planet that we have trash the hell out of it's going to rescue us from Culver nineteen somehow well you know if we could if we you know we could get smart enough you know quickly enough that is the thing I mean either the coach nineteen in any of these viruses old Peters disaster things that happen that you know our chances for us to go Hey there's a different way of doing things will we we be smart enough to the real and the lessons you know that happened while we're in the midst of the crisis and and then take those practices with us as we go forward what do you think logically think chances are well FOR if history is a guide the answers now but I'm hoping that we can somehow you know find our way you know it does though provoke a question and that is the changing climate the dramatic changes in climate does that foster these illnesses and anyway do you think I mean has there been any in other words has there been a corresponding spike in it in in any of these illnesses as we've seen climate changing an agricultural belts moving and or is it or is it just a spontaneously occurring thing that that does occur worldwide and and it doesn't really necessarily bear relation to the changes in the planet what was the code but my races you know daily China has wet markets you have live animals in there and you know if you want to eat something like a bass and you want to buy it live and have it you know killed there I mean it was really the turning the eating habits that started this I mean as in size you know so you are not an epidemiologist but I think the thing when I look at code made nineteen it is you know we're going to have more of these kind of the doctors that are going to affect us in as we can we can learn how to really take care of ourselves as communities you know members in each other and look you know look out for each other you know we could actually learn some skills that will help us because as the planet heats up I mean the thing that we really noticing you know with the bombs and the Beatles that are leasing trees although locate that and now you have the locusts are a bonded doesn't have wings and in Kenya they just had this absolute sort of beer looks come in and they can eat what you know thirty five thousand people each in the space of a week or something crazy but they had the right moisture content the right heat to go from being bonds without wings to having wings and then they can fly from crop to crop the needle of them says wow now if you yeah my god that's like a horror movie I mean really that's in I hate that the first thing I eat a burst of either either playing I tell you it's something that a lot of reports and then terrible because I I wanted to I want to actually talk about one of the positive things that is happening in the west coast of nineteen if they can be a positive but it but it's just a thing that I'm interested in is that at that away to mitigate climate change if we could get all the market but if you want to talk about them for a little bit longer Bach I I do get no no news please I'm desperate for good news okay okay well that's what I like to specialize that is good news okay one of the things that I've actually just been covering is teleconferencing and when we have state of the art teleconferencing which you know obviously Facebook and Google have had to cancel all of these you know great big events that were going to have because of because of nineteen you know your the tech giants so make Facebook live really amazing so it is like being in a room you know having virtual you know the virtual you in a room is as good as we all year in a row because this is one of the ways that we will would use if travel on a continued basis and you know what airline travel is responsible for two to three percent of carbon emissions right now and teleconferencing is seen as you know the eighteen top ways to reduce carbon emissions and emissions number sixty three S. teleconferencing which people are being forced to do right now because you know the cops lie there are thirteen thousand last you know airline trips happening I think of it daily or something I mean it's really amazing how either airline travel has been curtailed because of because of nineteen and so dean's old alternate like really good teleconferencing of being put to use right now but if we could go Hey will do just beyond the corona virus encoded nineteen that would actually be a plus for the planet and after the species and take out the joint wow that's a great point and we've seen it play out in something else because Lucien virtually vanished across the industrial heartland of China during all of this data yes yes lockdown measures they're taking to minimize further coronavirus infection and and the one unexpected benefit they really weren't looking for it but the air pollution dropped dramatically yes their air pollution in the first three weeks of February dropped to twenty five percent of course that in comparison to the same time period last year it was as much as a hundred and sixteen million metric tons of Calvin and next what New York state puts out in an entire year well that was just white you know off the case you know the cop and bill because yeah they were people aren't traveling and so there is this plus size that suddenly carbon emissions are dropping either because when not in the air and we're not in our calls so you know how can we keep that going once the world gets back to normal with one of the things that happened after these disasters especially in China here they'll want to make up all the economic you know downtime that they have had and the tendency often is to ramp up you know you know cold five you know electricity in all these things but it would be in you know I mean it would be a good thing if we go Hey you know let's think about you know can we cope with burning less fuel and doing business in a different way yeah I mean that's the that's the key I mean as you suggest it's very hard to continue it seems as though and I think China you know for all of the talk that you know they they're looking into green energy and they're actually reaching out a lot of green ways I think they're the biggest of all they have to be among the biggest users of coal energy in on the planet is not right well yeah I mean they're the biggest emitters of carbon yeah right you know they have overtaken us yet yeah and and like you said one of the things that it happens is that when it's been an absolute is off like this you know you've got old they're only going to do you know we're really committed to clean air into you know the Paris climate accord into what our mission reductions are going to be but then something I could nineteen happened and then that goes out the window like no no we're going to make up for lost time but really you know yes obviously we want people to get back to work and we you know I'll need their jobs and they need their incomes but we don't want to do it then it you know either by burning tons and tons of you know call I mean they say that they are trucks you know on the Mongolian China border trucks of cold from the Mongolian shy just waiting for China to be open for business again so they could Ramblers struck with Cologuard stop banning them yeah I mean I but but you really maker of such an interesting point that in these moments from this sort of that that over used phrase a teachable moment here is that if you can find alternative ways to do things like the teleconferencing you're talking about you make a an immediate impact on the environment on the planet in a positive way she had no absolutely and this is the thing because you know what a lot of climate activists are you sort of a slightest dismayed about watching the world's reaction to close at nineteen is why can't we be reacting to climate change like this big images of an emergency because it is you know we're not seeing the people you know in hazmat suits and body bags and things right in front of us but they're already deep people who you know dying migrating all these things because of you know I mean in the amount of climate refugees is huge but you know there are droughts happening in Central America you that harassment and abuse trump what he told us that they will you know criminals and gang people who were coming in you know twenty eighteen you know a lot of Central America you know is in drowsiness the pharmacy will coordinate students getting into that the push factor for the migration you know it's climate change it's not just you know violence at home the interesting thing mark also was right now you know we've had the bottom four out of we'll do so with oil prices down this is kind of like a two things coming together because when oil prices are cheap like this you know we could stop subsidizing oil which you know oil companies have actually been growing and this could be an incentive for big oil companies hate junior we're gonna be exploring and looking to drill for oil right now that you know this is already a moment when you could be going after William green energy options because that is definitely the way of the future oil prices are low so if we use that as an incentive to then increase more green I mean I'm really trying to see the positive in both of these things not because what's happening what's happening from a governmental perspective is that they're propping up that dirty oil and dirt and dirty oil is coming to government to be rescued and so maybe there's some small sliver of its going away that there's money to be made in the green sectors well but the other factor is that as the price of that oil drops it becomes more affordable and and so the economics of green energy are affected as well they're not affected positively but I'd love to talk more about that I know you just got back from.

"Say Alexa play KGO eight ten once again here's mark Thompson I'm trying to look at Iowa situation and I guess we're going to be an announcement right you were saying it'll be two o'clock our time yep two o'clock we'll get some kind of result in Iowa we will bring it to you as it happens we have special reports beginning at two this afternoon I love how we're all focused on Iowa and then we're you know and you heard me trash I and the fact that we even start with Iowa you heard me also trash the conspiracy theories of you missed that you can catch on the podcast or something or you know just know that I dressed in the check but then Ben we you know then we await sort of panting for these results they are so important for fundraising and all the rest mmhm for establishing quote momentum but then even as we talk about that we talk about the fact that in prior years they've been the indication of nothing and then sometimes the indication of significant political gains but I I just feel as though fundamentally the system is is a bit broken you know but none the less we will wait for two o'clock and that's where we'll get the the results as stated so I want to start with the Berkeley story because it's just sort of weird to me that they would it's such a battle look for Disney to fine a Berkeley school two hundred fifty dollars for showing lion king without a permit yeah but it's also very Disney if anybody's done any business with Disney you know they're very much by the book they're very much I is dotted and tease crossed we used to be owned by Disney and it was quite interesting to see how they protect their brand me to the T. they protected by charging you to do anything with it if you want to Disney property and you want to use it in some school play believe it or not you've got to get clearance I mean if anything seems as though it's below the bar by which Disney the legal should be judging whether or not something is a violation an elementary school use a lion king music I would think should be below that Barton the licensing company received an alert about the movie night so what is it they just show the movie is that it yeah this is a new version of The Lion King and apparently they showed it and this is a fund raiser they wanted to correct isn't exactly this is the you know and P. T. A. organizations around the bay area they're all full of cash and a lot of Amer struggling to it is just amazing and now the blowback for Disney campy worth the canon man I don't know my my daughter used to go to Walt Disney elementary school and I was sure I was like wow how they get away with you know it being Walt Disney apparently the family gave it a pass and that they were the last school to be called back well the other thing you know that happens here in the bay area is that you know we co exist with the greatest Disney museum on earth all yes in jeans to go over the weekend I did what you know Courtney came up and Mike my girlfriend came up and so you know what I want to do some special stuff with her so we went and that gave us three and a half hours which is not enough time no two you know it really isn't and so we ended up you know making a pledge to come back but if you haven't been it's this magnificent museum that's there at the presidio and again it's so it co exist with Disney being tough when it comes to use of their properties even for this Berkeley elementary school this trying to raise funds yeah anyway that they go a long way to try and protect their band but if you if you do go to a museum just going to take our advice to go all day you know because I did the same thing we went halfway through the day and we were just bomb we had a kind of rush to the last portion of it there's so much to look at in so many archives and drawings and it's just fascinating to do a deep dive into Walt Disney's life yeah even if you think you're not really super you know you're not a Mickey had knee you do get into it there's you can get into the financing of it I mean this is a guy with of singular vision mmhm Walt Disney and its while to see how it came together yeah and now how lawyers are busting a Berkeley school using the property all right let's get into some a corona virus and yeah multiple issues and employees at at the par Nash's campus of UC FF a U. C. S. half say that they got an email that says the two patients the corona virus for transfer to the hospital for treatment I know you had it in your news yeah a so they're just they're capable of caring for a disease that we don't know a lot about the husband had recently traveled to Wuhan came home develop symptoms the next day the wife now also has corona virus yet another reason not to get married everybody they're gonna be in isolation and again make sure the proper procedures are being followed apparently but it's alarming mmhm and I don't know what can be done beyond what is being done they're they're handling it you know quite aggressively and yet we find ourselves in a situation where there really isn't a way to contain this outbreak you know UCSF specializes in the treatment of patients with complex diseases the university.

"Say Alexa play KGO eight ten once again here's mark Thompson George very much Thompson here John wells is our guest user comic San Francisco comic for years and he went to LA in many did what we talk about on the show all the time you left with your family and you move to New England a quiet life with your wife and child and you rent is our vision you fought this RV it turns out to be this RV from hell it doesn't work it breaks down in Oklahoma you're trying to get into this motel it's essentially had a bride to them to let me bring the dogs in and so it's and we've been through an ordeal to pry five in the morning now that I unpack you know my wife and kids in the animals and put them in and I have to figure out what the hell we're going to do and I had I drank like I a tumbler of tequila just calm my nerves and I I I get about an hour's sleep and I wake up and I see that across the road from the motel is a Ford dealership and so I walk in there and I or I get there before they even opened I'm standing there waiting they they unlock the doors and I go jet and it this is like Christmas Eve Mike it's December twenty fourth that's a great time to get a good deal on a car and I said I go to well it's it's a good time for them to sell a car full price to somebody who's desperate and I said general you're gonna sell me a truck today and but here's part of the problem and I'll do this as quickly as I can we still own the house in LA I'm told that yet okay I have a mortgage on that so you got credit hi yeah I basically signed an agreement saying I'm not going to take a loan on another vehicle on a on anything and so this guy I go you have to sell me this truck and I tell him my story of who I am and the show I'm working on that I created was a kids show on Nickelodeon and I got I simply a do you have kids and he goes yeah and I go this is the show and it starts this guy your kid your kids are gonna know he gets on his phone and he calls his giggles Hey have you ever heard of this and I hear screaming on the other and and he's looking me up on I am DVD goes alright here's what I'm gonna do Hey guys sometimes I'll give somebody the keys and say Hey take this thing for a test drive and if you like it you know and they're too will sign the papers and it's yours he is I'm gonna give you that you're going to sign everything right now I'm gonna give you the keys you're gonna drive away and once you're closing in as the land the twenty eighth and he said when the after eight years I'm gonna put these papers through on the twenty ninth so he did me a solid he gave me this truck so we took everything out of the RV that we could and and and I said what I pointed out the window to go there it is it's right over there he's I I give you a hundred Bucks for it and so we just leaving the motel parking lot and and so we take everything yeah that we can fit everything else goes like in a dumpster and we and I and it's like the Beverly hillbillies I've got everything strapped smaller vehicle it's a much smaller vehicle it was as a Ford F. one fifty and but it was nice and we're all crammed into the cab or how the world the three across the front and the two dogs were in you know in the back was much of our stuff is weak but and then I had tarps and everything else stir and bungee cords and shot and I'm driving down the freeway and then I look in the rear view mirror and see like just an explosion of a box yeah well go well whatever that was and hope we don't need it no there was no stuff and then there was it was literally like a perfect storm were watching like three different storms converging on the tri state area and we're racing to is a G. I. it's snowstorm I were driving by in their cars skidded out in did in the middle of the road in the ditches and where and we get there just in time and I signed the papers and saw the place for the first time well I love the story of getting there and then once you're there something happens that is remarkable it seems like it would be the thing to do to know your community and to get into like a a simpler life when you've left California the high prices and you know the keeping up with the Joneses you actually try and succeed in getting a job at the post office and become a rural carrier I want it we stay with us just for a minute or two more and tell us about that when we come back okay what is on Ross is our guest a long time San Francisco comic moved to LA took his family you know away from California the simpler life and the life just didn't turn out to be as simple as he thought it might be a more with John we continue KGO a tent Thompson show on KGO eight ten hi horn blower cruises and events ten thirty at KGO a tad a market.

"Mark Thompson here we're talking about something that is really very much over the moment on this SO showering ramp up at thanksgiving and it's it's about robots and A. I. replacing us as human beings and so many different jobs so they did a big study were if you're just joining us in in Rotterdam and also in Munich I think is the other arm of the study and that was just published in this country and it it it indicates that we as humans would rather lose our job to a I or whole pot then we went to another human being it's just it's basic ego and I I suppose there's a territoriality about that you know it well I think it says so much about us as people because again as we pointed out it's obvious you lose against a eyes so you just kind of give up right there it's a it's an okay excuse but if you you you can't compete with human so if you are replaced with a home and a suggested you're just not good enough exactly yeah and the reality is on a I that we just can't compare ourselves to it in any way we can't compare ourselves to a robot sure we can't comparisons to a I am so for that reason we can deal with it better psychologically yeah so I ask you the KGO listener would you rather lose your job to a I or and and or a robot and or robot or to another human and we've all had experiences like this but this got us talking so you can call us for one five eighty eighty eight ten four one five eighty eighty eight ten or maybe you want to throw in on this mmhm we got talking about relationships because I said I'd much rather lose my girlfriend to a same sex relationship to you know like she met a lesbian and fell in love with her or maybe another stray will come in and they just decided to have a lesbian relationship but the point is I lost my relationship to my girlfriend in this hypothetical to a lesbian relationship I'd be okay with that more than I would if she you know met the checkout clerk fell in love with them and then went off with them and I've lost her to another guy well because you can't provide what a woman could provide for exact.

"Mark Thompson here good morning we talk about the PGA blackouts we kind of got into a conversation about the Niners no wind it up but Colin Kaepernick who you know did a try out that was really quite controversial because it was they moved from a Tuesday it was Saturday and then he in essence didn't like the fact that there was a media blackout media wasn't allowed there it kind of began this conversation icon Capen again and activism generally and you know whether or not look he's is within his rights to B. as activist as you want to be as combative as you want but you know what prices paid as a result of that and on Twitter as a tweet from Mother Teresa I get to her if the owners handle it properly this issue would have died down if they took a stand on racism run the obliteration of black people by police they could defuse isn't hard be yeah I'm sorry with all respect I think the NFL wants to stay clear of the issue they're not trying to embrace the controversy by taking a position you know that could only inflame at show of course governor got a bad deal mark but his principles are more important than football didn't he proves that if you start backing away from what put him in this position then that takes the wind out of the sales of the black lives matter movement and everything else related racism in America well that's the activist position that's right so that would suggest he won't back off at all Dennis in San Jose hi you're on with mark Thompson are you on all right ma'am yes you're going I don't think the call is really helping himself here I mean I agree with the position and I have no issue with what he's doing but when we work for an employer and you know hi tech company look on value whatever to get on my earnings call and start talking about political I don't think they know all the outlets would be real happy about it yeah what kind of environment he's been and.
