"I mean, they live in a state that is close to just separating itself from the rest of the country because it's going to fall into the Pacific Ocean one of these days. Well, the first of the first time I heard it, I said, you know what? It's directly proportional to where he happened to be standing who's got the accent. Right. And by the way, I don't find southern accents to be, I find them to be pretty normal. Oh, they love it in Canada. Well, it's one thing to have some fun with southern accents. It's another thing to look down on southerners, like they do. They do in the east coast as well, but nothing is nothing is quite as bad as Southern California. I've lived in Baltimore. And I've lived all over the country. I used to ride the West Coast. They were every fall with a good friend of mine for Boise Idaho. Yeah. And we stopped at 7 11 one day. And the girl behind the counter, I could tell she picked up on my accent. And I can't remember what you said, but that friend of mine was standing there. He said, you gonna let that go? I said no. I said, look, you have a great day behind that 7 11 7 cigarettes and soft drinks. I think I'll go ride the West Coast, have a nice day. I like that. That was great. Hey, thank you for the call. Gator is up next in Memphis. What's up, mister fall, Paul fine bob. Hey gator, what's up with you? Not much else I want to touch on a few things. The first round, I'm calling JK. How come he spent so quiet this way did he follow up that he had under a rock or something? Yeah, well he's nervous. Alabama and his team look like garbage. A Geno that guy, California, I was all talking about Easton by bad mouths and omeprazole but then another two stone bad great place to walk. Why don't you walk around the Hollywood Hollywood hills where a mountain lion can all you're sorry, but that's why I look at that. That's all I want to say. By the way, you're right about that. There are cougars and mountain lions, there's all kinds of crazy animals out there in the richest neighborhood in the country. Let's continue with Deontay in Charleston, South Carolina. Hi, domestic, longtime listener, first time caller. We are doing well. Thank you for calling. I want to talk about South Carolina but since the gentleman before me was talking about California, I was in San Francisco and they didn't have sweet tea, so I instantly thought it was trash. And I just wanted to get your opinion on this Saturday going to Fayetteville. Will it be an upset if we beat Arkansas and thank you for the call. Yeah, it would definitely be an upset I think that would be really, I'm thinking about some of the games last year that Shane being Rwanda, but I think this would be the most significant. I mean, going on the road and winning at a place like that, considering how good Arkansas is and what is expected of them, Larry is up next. What's up, mom? What's going on? Larry, how are you? I'm not crying here in monkey from California. And I worry from California. Why is it 9? You know what I'm talking about, there's dogging us, man. California, man, what people use the best thing on the downside. You got tents everywhere. That's the last place to walk. Maybe more to walk your kids around. Watch them shoot up, dope. You can me, man, angle is racial crap. That's guy has no self respect to get on the radio. Bobby is down real line, Paul. What are you like? Well, I don't know. Yeah, I'm here, don't you? Why are you talking to me like that? I'm not from Southern California. I'm just mad about you, man. Well, I am too. But I tried to I tried to behave Larry. I knew I really wish you had been on the phone with me. What would you have said to him? Out of totally my Ukraine air market, I come and walk out there in California, where we're going, how many times right there, how many people are using the bathroom on the sidewalls. Hey, Larry. Let me ask you a question. Back in the day, I mean, I'm not saying you're not capable of it today, although you're not. But 25, 25, 30 years ago, a guy like that said some of that stuff to your face. What would happen? Oh, yeah, that would be a knuckle samus. A knuckle, a knuckle sandwich. Knuckle sandwich. Sandwich. Hey, what are you talking about? A knuckle sandwich, man. Come on. Larry. Final question, final question. How schloss are you right now? Drunk, Larry. I'm gonna tell my doctors this fall. I wouldn't even write them cowboys for him. How many did you have after that call? How many did you consume after that call? Hold on. I mean, aren't tall boys are 16 ounces? Yeah. Yes. You had 8. You had 8, 16 ounce tall boys after some clown from SoCal called in. Well, yeah. I mean, I was drinking anyways, but Larry, that's a Larry. That's a 128 ounces of beer. That ain't nothing. Boy, you talking about a friend next down here. Man, come on, ball. 120 ounces of beer? Who are you from? My daughter made mad at me, but I can't help it. You don't have to die from something. We are officially out of time for this program. We appreciate all of you for being a part of it. Some really interesting guests today will see you right here tomorrow. Thank you for listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. "And let's check out Elvis up next. It's always love saying hello to Elvis. Yeah, this is Elvis Bailey from Kentucky, Harlan county Kentucky. Yes, sir. Since early 90s and I was just wondering what you think our season might be why? And also, I'd just like to throw the two C fans that they always think they're going to win a championship after they wouldn't won the game. So I just wanted to say that also. And we didn't get an answer for mark's troops, which may be a leading answer in and of itself. The fact that he was he wasn't playing games about Rodriguez flat out said he didn't know, which means that if this is still in the hands of the authorities, this late in the game, maybe that's encouraging. Maybe that means that something is happening. Maybe there's conversations on both sides, maybe the facts of the matter are different. I don't have any idea. I don't live in Kentucky, and I'm not following it that closely. I'm just giving you an opinion based on what I heard. And he said it. It's not his call. That means it's above him. It means it's involved with the university and the local authorities. So if you're Kentucky fan, I may have read a glimmer of good news into his answer. We're not answer for that matter. Let's check out the preacher man. Preacher. Hey, Paul, how are you doing, sir? I love your show. Thank you. I want you on the work. I want to come home from work. I would just before I make my company, I want to ask if you heard anything about Eli gold, how he's doing and he's going to be back to broadcast booth. Preacher, I'm glad you asked me that. And I'm sorry that I don't have a good answer. I was communicating with a close friend of mine yesterday who's also a very close friend of Eli's as we both are. And the troubling part of this and I'm not speaking out of school because I don't know is that we just don't know anything. And that is is challenging when you would like to know how a friend and a hero of so many alabamians is doing. So the answer is I don't know what's going on there. My sense is that we're probably not going to see him any time soon based on what little I know. I sure do hate to hear that. I met him in person down here in mobile at the church for our work. And you're such a great guy. Not the same without him. It just didn't, it just did the same right not having him on the radio say. But when I was going to come in on his Brian Kelly deal, I mean, these punks down here, they love. They love LSU the way I love Alabama and I thought a lot more of them if he went for the win and didn't make it and I mean, you know, I know it's just one game and all of that, but we already had a pretty good heel to climb down here. I think he just made it a little bit tougher. We'll see. The preacher man, I agree with you and there's no reason to scream and holler about this anymore, but he gambled on the safe bet and he lost, which is the worst thing in the world to do. And knowing Louisiana and I've been there many, many times as you have and everyone else has, I think the people of southern Louisiana would have appreciated him going for it. Oh, absolutely. I mean, I wanted him to and I mean, I like Alice. I like, oh, I hate to say it except for all of them, but and I love Mississippi, that coach has got there is great. But I just, I don't know, I just, I don't feel good about it. Well, it's kind of like the old saying, you know, if you're going, if you're going to go down, go down swinging, and everybody appreciates someone taking a chance. And. There's a lot about him, I like, but he came off, I thought today, where yesterday very standoffish, you know, I don't know if you saw the video of he chastised a reporter for getting to his press conference late. And the reporter said, well, if you had won, I would have gotten here on time, which is pretty funny, really. And then he said, well, it's not about that. It's about it's about being on time. You know, coach Kelly let your team don't lecture the media on rules because the media doesn't really have any rules. If somebody shows up late, that's their issue, not yours. Anyway, let's see what happens. Ed is up next in Alabama. All right, well. Hey there. I can't believe I got through. Well, we're glad you did. I don't do. I just had a little caliph. I've had some California experiences myself. Banned from the south and they hear my accent, you know, frowned upon it. Well, you have to remember the people that live in California are superior to us. Well, they think they are. Yeah. Of course. But you know, I

"Guys, let's keep it PC. I already started the recording. All right, thank you. But we'll still do it live, though. I'm the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Has anybody seen Arnold? I'll go check the bathroom. This is gonna be loud. It's already loud. I'm gonna check the bathroom. I heard Arnold had a case so that so I'm gonna do it live. We are the one, two, three, so loser. Coach, I told you it was gonna be loud. What a game still intact. What up, everybody? I'm lunchbox. I know the most about sports. I'll give you the sports facts. My sports opinions because I'm pretty much a sports penis. Genius. Coach, that's really even the penis was loud. What's up, everyone? I'm Eddie and I know the least about sports, but I'm your average sports fan, your sports watcher. I don't know who's who's and I don't know the what's what's. It all started when a dumbass. Really coach. Met another dumbass, and they met another dumbass, and they became the dumbass trio the end. What happens when you talk about the perfect game? You'll lose the perfect game. Y'all, it's Susan, I'm from the north. I'm an alpha male. I live in the west side of Nashville near the Cumberland. There's mountains, there's a gully. There's a plateau. There's a farmer's property that we hit golf balls on. Guys over to you. Oh boy, did you guys see the big fight? No, we're not talking anything about boxing UFC. I'm talking Kentucky basketball versus Kentucky football. Calipari versus stoops. Why? Because stoops is getting all pumped up for the football season and John calipari's talking about stoops, the governor Oklahoma? No, Marc dupes. I don't know who he is. He's the head coach at Kentucky. Never heard of him. Talk to you can be good. Oh my God. You need to show, I'm gonna show Eddie the top 5 top ten logo. Did you see the top ten for college football come out? Yeah, there's a team in the top ten. I had no idea their logo. I had no idea who they were. Liberty? Who is it? I gotta pull up the picture. Pardon my non show prep. Filibuster. Yes. So anyway, John calipari comes out and says, last time I checked, we're a basketball school. That's true. And stoops got his feelings hurt. And it's like, well, I don't know about you, but we've won four bowl games in a row and we won ten games and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But here's the thing, Mark stoops doesn't realize. They are a basketball school. He's getting his feelings hurt, but they are. I understand you're trying to build a football program, but dude, basketball is what carries Kentucky, but do you want like as a player? Do you want your coach if you're on the football team? Do you want your coach being like, no, you're right, yeah, you're a basketball school, yeah, we don't matter. No, I think the players like it that the coach is defending them. You know, saying, no, you're not. We're a football school. Watch us. Like, we're way better than you guys. I think you need that. I don't think he truly believes that they're a football school. I think he's trying to turn this thing. But it's smart, it's weird to see the programs fighting.

"Welcome back here on a Friday afternoon and you guys ready for this guy? Ready? Handsome Joe from red day. Yeah. I'm actually having a pretty good day. Went to Walmart got mold, James. Went and got me some drinks and kicking and grays and piggy wiggly. And finally made it on. But that's the stuff that you might not know, Paul. But when I have these late days, I record your show and I watch every minute of it in 18. You do. So I do. I do. Watch every minute of it. And you know what? It's been good because you've had a lot of colors Colin in with some good things about this and I don't think and which I think it's long past due for these college athletes to make put some money in their pockets. I mean it is. I just caused their scholarship athletes. Hey, there's people that go to college academic and they can still get a job and make money. I mean, it's just, but if you play football or basketball, you can't make no money, that don't even make sense, though. I mean, what they're doing, college, you can't afford to go get a piece of pizza. And my head just, you know, that just mount painting on that ball. But you know what? I watched the video. I don't know if you seen it, but I may have put out where he's gambling on the guitar. I have not seen the video yet. Tell us more about it. I mean, it's like almost a minute long. And he's just, you know, I know he played drone, but I didn't know he played a guitar. He usually, if you're in a band, you could probably, I mean, I would think I would think percussion would be more difficult than the guitar. Oh, idiot. It is, 'cause, you know, I'll pick a Madeleine sometime. Well, I did tell I broke it. But and the piano, you know, I think I was a little bit. Can you play any of Beethoven's sonatas on a piano? It's difficult, Paul. I'll be honest. I've been teaching myself. And when you teach yourself, it's kind of hard. Joe, I have to ask you a question, because, you know, Mark QB act, don't you Yankee that runs this show? Oh, yeah, yeah. Mark scoop. Well, he's from Rochester, New York, and he asked me, he said, did he say, guitar? Of course, anybody in the south knows it's a guitar. Yeah, it's guitar. Randy plays Lee, and I play steel guitar. Guitar. That's a country over in the Mideast, isn't it? Yeah, that's what I play in in. Yeah, life plays a guitar. In India, we'll play the guitar here. Yeah. I mean, there's a big difference. The guitar. You think anybody you think back in the day, somebody walked up to back in the early 70s, somebody walked up to Ronnie Van Zandt, saying, who is your guitar player, mister van Sant? Never been to Indy. Yeah. You know, I want to get into what you've got on the guitar. That comes with a guitar guitar. So Joe, what's on tap of the weekend now that it has arrived, hey, I got big plan just like you. Shoot. Well, first thing I'm gonna do in the morning, as soon as I get up, I'm going fishing. Fishing. And a friend of mine reminded me that Benson that we got coffee in this area too. Crappy. Oh, yeah, I remember crappy. Is that how I learned to speak? My dad used to take me. I've had a crappy week. And you know, but I'm fishing for catfish tomorrow. You got to play him, Paul. Final question here, because when you're fishing, when you're fishing for croppy, what do you put? How do you bait it? I just get out there. With my guitar and put those minutes on the hook. But the main element. And I'm having myself a weekend. Thanks for the call. Appreciate it. Kevin is in North Carolina. Hello, Kevin. Kevin. I'm telling you, I missed your calling. You should have been a comic in the catskills in the summertime. This has got to be the funniest damn show I've heard in a while. I'm still laughing from the, by the way, I may be I'm opening for Buddy Hackett at gross singers on Friday night. Well, catskills. Yeah, at least you know where they were, brother. I know the drill. I had parents from New York, but so anyway, I'm still just going to finish laughing on the boy scout thing. What did you call that? What kind of meadow would I get? I don't know what I said. Wasn't that I was in the cubs guys? What is a Pueblo? I'm sorry. I knew I got that. I mean, we're going back a few years. I mean, I knew I had that web a little badge. Well, okay. That wasn't in there. I don't know where I was in. I was a street kid, I guess, but anyway. By the way, I didn't stay long. I got your meat. Yeah, they couldn't get me into that uni. But anyway, just to clarify for that, Texas a and M gentlemen, you know, you had Jackie sherrill on here four or 5 months ago. And I think he explained it to us when you talk about, do you say in that Texas that all money that they found out there a 120, 30 years ago in West Texas. Right. That money is tax taxed in the state. You're right. And two thirds of that money goes to the University of Texas. One third goes to Texas a and M, obviously no private school in Texas gets a dime, nor do Texas tech or Houston or any of the other public schools, Texas, El Paso, they don't get a dime. So that's the money, okay? That you were talking about that he never fessed up to. Played dumb like a fox on you. But anyway, I think everybody out there knows that. But curious a way outside the box thing here. You know, this transfer Porter and the NIL, my man, nobody that you interviewed can really give nobody knows what they're talking about because it's so new and it's so crazy and it can go in so many different directions, obviously. But just a way outside the box trying to reverse engineer this. What if the Ivy League decides to go big time college football? I remember the eye relief. They won most of the national championships between 1891 college football started in the 1930. Michigan won one. By the way, I think I know where you're going. I don't think they will for this reason because I don't think the alumni of those schools care. We heard John bacon a couple of hours ago. Say that Michigan alum are not certain they want to give money to collectibles, supporting athletics. You have to understand it's a different mindset at certain places. The Ivy League being among them..

"A father or coach, all his brothers or coaches. There's no way they think this is great for the locker room. It's not. Right. Well, my question is you think it'll make a division in the team. Well, last year was too early to tell. I didn't see any evidence of it, but I think what's going on now is the real issue. It's not the recruiting of the players. It's when your team goes and gets another player from another team and this is really where the action is and. A left tackle at Kentucky. And they go out into the portal and grab the left tackle from South Carolina and he's making a $100,000 a year and you're not making a dime and you just got through starting the whole season and doing a reasonably good job. Yeah, that's what I've taken. I asked my thinking exactly. Yeah, I think that that's I think that's the issue. And I've talked to coaches privately. They're not quite as bold publicly. And they all say that they all make sure they're on the record saying, oh, I think it's great for the players to make money off their name image and likeness. But they're going ballistic about the portal when player when teams are literally coming in and swooping players away. Because they've offered them some sort of inducement. Harold is up next. Hello, Harold. How's it going, Paul? Paul, Harold, been too long. How are you? Fine. I would call earlier if I had the personality of crystal shores. I would call it. Well, hey, Harold, if I had the personality of Chris from gulf shores, I would be hosting The Tonight Show. On a different network. Yeah, I purposely said that. Yeah. First of all, just a real pedestrian question. Since you're so close to the South Carolina border, I know you'll like politics a lot. Have you seen any footage of anything where Lindsey Graham has congratulated dawn staley on the national championship? You know, after he was bragging about what the Republicans get the majority in the Senate, they can block do anything they want to. Block any Supreme Court nominee of Biden's. I have not that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Lindsey Graham, I know this because I've spoken to him on several occasions is a huge Clemson fan. In fact, I ran into him at the Reagan international about two years ago, and that was the entire conversation. We had a 25 minute conversation about Clemson football. Okay, 25. Well, that was not the only we spent a couple of minutes talking about his golfing with the former president, which was who was the president at the time. That was to me more interesting than talking college football. He kept wanting to talk about Alabama and Clemson. I kept asking him about playing golf with Donald Trump. But what's very bitter in it once very bitter enemies, now good friends. Well, let's move on. That happens. Yeah. Let's move on to the jumbo fish. When you interviewed him the night of after he beat auburn in early 2014, did you anticipate that he was going to encounter peaks and valleys at Tallahassee? And then he may not be have the success. Well, obviously he didn't have the success. My relationship with him at one time was very good. We were pretty good friends when he was an assistant and occasionally got together. He was in and out of Alabama a lot. As you know, he had family there and he would come visit him and I lost a lot of faith in him with his mishandling of the Jameis Winston situation. I thought he had egregiously and said so I have been impressed with what he's done that I'm getting to your question. He can not have any more valleys. Let me put it that way. Harold. Yeah. You knew you knew you would get a straight answer somewhere in there, didn't you? Oh, absolutely. Say something about Harold. What? I think it's possible, Harold, that you are the and you're not really, you don't call often, but I think it's entirely possible that you are the longest continuous caller to this show. I don't think there's any doubt about that. Yeah, man called the very first show I ever had. Oh, absolutely fussy. No. For all those people out there Harold, who want to hear clips of the old show with Vickers, you need to hear clips of the fussing with fine bomb show. Oh, yeah. There's never been a better show in America. I remember one night when someone made a remark about you that was very inappropriate. And I believe the host was, I believe, the lady who answered the problem was murder Gunn. Right. And it got on the air and that was a, that was a rough show. But Harold, that was literally a no holds bar show where if I said some of the things on the air that I said back then, my career would end instantaneously. Hey, thanks for the call hero. Always great to hear from you. We are heading to the break. We still have a long way to go. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast..

"Often field the conversations are the same everywhere we had coach Fisher yesterday. We've had other head coaches in here recently. And everyone's approaching NIL and the portal differently, but they are new issues. The NIL part of it, I think we knew about, I'm not sure anybody gauge how suffocating this transfer portal issue was going to be to head coaches. How are you handling both of those? The transfer portal has been very good to us. So it's definitely hard. You've got to continually stay on top of your numbers. I think that's the big thing. Is making sure you have enough of the young guys, you have the experience that you need and roster management is obviously at an all time high right now. So that's been very helpful. You look at last year and we had some impact players that were from the transfer portal so it's been very good to us. And I think that's a compliment to our culture. I think the players that we have that are impact players in our program are not looking to go elsewhere. They're looking to stay here and help us attract guys that can help us take it to another level. So that's been extremely positive for us. On the NIL front, I know everyone is looking at it in ways of enhancing players. There's big money and then there's just the amount of money that can help young players maybe give them something they've never had. How is UK approaching it? Yeah, it's been very positive. You know, we've been slow on the collective front. I think that's something that you're balancing a fine line of pay for play there or that's something that we have to be very cautious, but we're moving in the right direction to have the balance to help players in a lot of different areas. I think everybody wanted these athletes to be able to benefit from their name image and likeness. So we want that. I think that's a good thing. These players have worked extremely hard. I think some of the outrage some of the concern comes from playing guys out of high school that haven't performed a bit for your university and paying them hundreds of $1000. Sometimes millions of dollars to play, I think, you know, we are definitely toten a fine line there of paying for play. And that's something that's never been allowed in college football, but right now it seems to be okay. So, you know, you better get on board and you better find ways to do it to the best of your ability or you're going to get left behind. And finally, I know you want young people to benefit. You said that a minute ago, but you come from a football family that goes way back and I would imagine going back to when you were a young kid, the idea at the dinner table of these conversations would have been pretty far. How do you deal with the new world and I know you have to when this is not exactly what we all woke up years ago thinking college football was or would ever be. Well, I think, you know, down deep, you're probably traditionalist as well. That we grew up in college football being very different from what it is right now. Again, that's not to say one is better or one is worse. I think these players deserve to be able to capitalize on their name and their image and their likeness. And we all want that. They work extremely hard and they need that. And we want that for their families. Again, I think the concern comes in is without some national legislation where we were all playing from the same playing field. It's going to be hard to get our arms around this. I think we all wanted this. I think a lot of the unintended consequences that come with this is a concern to all of us, or it should be. If it's not a concern to all of us, then obviously you have a booster and a fan base that are pumping in millions and millions of dollars and you're able to buy players. And that's the truth. I mean, that's going on. That's happening. That's our new world right now, but I think some people better stepped in and continue to look at this continue to refine it to be able to help and find a happy, medium, find what we were looking for. These players able to capitalize on themselves without going out there and just saying, hey, let's get a big booster fan base. Let's pump in a bunch of money and let's pay players. Millions of dollars to come here because that's going to change, that's just a whole other bunch of problems that are going to happen. You're going to have guys in the locker room that your boosters paid millions of dollars to come to your university and they're not going to be able to cut it. They're not going to play as good as somebody that's making nothing. So I think that's all something that we all should be concerned about. Some really interesting comments from coach stoop. So be well enjoyed the game tomorrow and the rest of the practice and we hope to see you soon. Thank you, coach. Thank you so much, Paul. You bet. Coach Mark stoops. "The pride passion and pageantry of college football lives here. This is the Paul finebaum show hour three podcast. And we are welcome all of you back second half of the show is live a lot of conversation has been about NIH. We had Jimbo Fisher on yesterday and no matter what he says, people are going to interpret it, however they choose to. So it's been a big topic of conversation, of course, three spring games tomorrow. You have Kentucky auburn and a and M coach Mark stoops joining us from the university of Kentucky. They're spring game tomorrow. Coach, always great to see you, especially as you wrap up another spring. How are you? I'm doing good, Paul. How about yourself? We've been doing great. Having all these same conversations that I'm sure you're trying to avoid, but let's try to stay on the field for a few minutes here and talk about the spring and how has it gone and what do you expect tomorrow? Yeah, it's gone really good. I've been pleased, as you know, I made a coordinator hire and a change real soon before spring ball started here. So we kind of had a hit the ground running. With our new OC change, but that's been very, very positive, very it's been seamless and we've hit the ground running with the spring, but overall very pleased. You know, we have a mixture, probably just like most people with some good experience. Guys coming back that have played a lot of football and then we've got some new guys and some depth that we need to develop, but we're in the process of doing that. We have our spring game tomorrow, but I actually have to come back with two more practices next week because of the change with the offense coordinator. Yeah, and of course, you've done this now a couple of times and your coordinator did quite well. So you got to big promotion to the NFL. I don't know if it's a promotion, but it's certainly a big job out where he used to be. I know that's not easy. Changing coordinators. What goes into that in terms of philosophy and just the learning curve for the players? Well, I think that was the big thing for me. I really felt like we improved. You know, it's been well documented. Some of the move that we wanted to make a year ago and improve and get more balanced. We certainly achieved that. I was very happy for Liam to get an opportunity to go back to LA to be the offensive coordinator. With the world champion. So that's a great move for him. But I really wanted to keep that going. You know, very much with the system that we were in. So excited to be able to attract and bring in somebody like rich, sangria, you know, from the forty-niners. So he has quite a bit of experience with this system, certainly there are some differences. They call things differently, but overall, you're able to continue to build and keep that continuity. So I was very excited about that. Coach, let's talk about going to the NFL, there are a lot of options you've had some really good people coming in and out of there. But with Liam, I understand and certainly your new coach has a great reputation. What are you seeing in the NFL that has intrigued you or interested you so much to bring it over to what you guys are doing in Lexington? Well, I mean, with that offense, you know, with you look at the forty-niners in Kyle Shanahan and certainly with the rams with Sean mcvay last year and all the guys that are coming up through that system, I mean, you know, that is absolutely one of the hardest offenses in all sports right now. So it's pretty hard to argue with what they're doing and the success that they've had. And for us, I thought it fit us very well. You know, because it starts with a power running game and then being able to play action and getting the ball down the field off of that. So it's been very exciting for us for our fan base and certainly getting the balance that I've been looking for. You had such an amazing year last year, you coupled up with a year a couple of years ago. I mean, there was a time when a ten win season at UK, you could only dream about now having done it a couple of times, having really established Kentucky as one of the preeminent teams in the east. What has it done for your program overall and how do you keep it going? I know the ultimate question. Yeah, absolutely. It's been very positive for us. You know, we've been working and grinding our way up, so to speak through the SEC for a long time. You know, I think last year, having the balance that we're looking for offensively, it's helping us attract quality offensive skill position guys, which we really needed to help take us to another level. But the consistency is definitely been on our program. I think that that's the foundation of development of recruiting the right guys to our program and constantly working hard to develop them and help take them to another level. That's what we're all about. We're not planning on going away anywhere soon..

"So that's not familiar. Yeah, it's like Dodd wrote it. And he might have seen this. I mean, for as long as there's been college football, the thing that makes college football particularly scandal, what am I trying to say? Is recruiting? The pro teams have drafts and free agency in these very formal organized ways for the teams to acquire talent. Recruiting is a free for all, and it always has been, and we know the famous stories about Eric dick Eric Dickerson and his cars and so on and so forth. So I think if I had to guess what Scott is feeling and I'm not trying to downplay it, I think a lot of people may feel this way right now is whiplash. There's so much drastic change at once. But to your point, is that drastic change, if you loved watching Michigan games at the big House, are you going to be thinking about any of that on the first Saturday of this coming season when Michigan runs out of the tunnel? Or when the ban comes onto the field that your favorite stadium, I'm not specific to Michigan. I don't think so. Can I float a theory here? And it could be totally off base. And I apologize if this is nowhere on your radar of it. And I don't want to zero it directly to him. I think this is in general some of the stuff you're talking about. I feel like because we, including myself, are so stuck on this thing, my phone, and so stuck on technology and social media that we are constantly getting peppered. I don't want to say bombarded, but constantly peppered with outrage and things that are disturbing and things that are sad and things that are annoying. And it just uses constantly being unsettled and poked that I feel like it's hard to enjoy a lot of things because you're seeing either the worst examples of it or things that maybe or just don't sit right. And I feel like that has a role in it. I think. The biggest threat to the popularity of the sport right now did you just dismissing what I said? Oh, I think it's a great theory. I mean, it's actually one of the deepest areas ever been said on this podcast. I didn't know how to respond to it. I think the biggest threat, if you will, is not these things we were just talking about. Well, it is something we were just talking about on the last email question, which is this regionalism, this consolidation of power in one part of the country. If you're a PAC 12 fan, if you're a fan of what's about to be kind of a stripped down version of the big 12. That to me would affect your interest in the game if you feel like we just don't have a seat at the table. We're not part of the big show. Not that this sport has ever been a level playing field by any means. But never has it been exclusive a club as it is right now. And so the question is, well, NIL help alleviate that. Will it make it even worse? Will it just balance each other out? We don't know yet. Or transfer portal for that matter. We just don't know yet, but to me that's the biggest issue of the sport is facing and it's one without any real solution. Now, after we just spent a long time answering that question, I wonder, I'm gonna email Scott. I wonder if we'll turn out the user referring to something completely different. Then what we were just discussing, but I've heard a lot of variations of, you know, especially since I wrote the story about the kid with the $8 million anti contract. This is the death of college football. So I'm assuming it has something to do with that. As always, you can send your emails to the audible pod at Gmail dot com. We'll see you next time..

"Does act with Scandinavian change him as a coach? Because there was the first thing that had ever really gone truly wrong for him. He's wins, national championships gets all these accolades and now he goes through the situation where he almost got fired or the media was tearing him apart and I don't know. Did it make him more paranoid? Did it make him, I don't know, it just seems like maybe he wasn't the same coach after that. Why do you say we get to the mailbag? As always, send your questions to the audible pod at Gmail dot com, Stu, tell me the first one. All right, this is from Andrew, and the subject of the email is non SEC conference leverage. Hey guys, you discussed on last episode. How you thought the PAC 12 may be losing its leveraging position when it comes to playoff expansion at the SEC may look to implement its own plan. However, I think the opposite may end up happening. One issue I'm curious about that I haven't heard discussed elsewhere is that by having so many traditional powerhouse teams from the same conference, the SEC, though play each other on a regular basis through the regular season, how does an expanded playoff up to 12 teams differentiate itself from the SEC regular season is in part of the lure from the bowls and the playoffs to get match ups between teams who wouldn't otherwise play each other due to geography and conference affiliation. If you're the other conferences, doesn't this actually give you leverage since eventually fans will eventually lose interest in those games and not wanting to see repeat matchups. I think people think that if there's a 12 team playoff, the SEC is going to put half the teams in. I don't think that's going to be the case. Maybe they get three, maybe they get four, and I also think that the same exact thing could happen from the big tent. I believe max Olsen, when the 12 team thing was first announced as a possibility, ran the numbers and it was actually the Big Ten, not the SEC. That would have gained the most playoff spots over the years. So. I just think the reason the SEC has all the leverage is because they're the ones keep winning the national championship and you can't have a credible playoff without the SEC. Yeah, and I think ultimately it's like, it's just comes down to that, right? It just feels like if somebody was not part of the SEC's version of the playoff, it would just not seem like it would have any meat behind it, right? And I think it would be hard for people to give and this isn't 2001 or 2002. So much has changed and how we look at the top of the food chain in the college football in the last 20 years. It wasn't like this. I mean, there was always passionate fan bases, but it wasn't like this till really to the mid 2000s when SSC went on this crazy run. It's true. I'm old enough to remember when at SI dot com. We did, this is kind of crazy to think now, but this was around 2003. And we did like a themed package about who are the most powerful people in college football who are the most powerful programs, which are the most powerful conferences. I remember Miami was considered the most powerful program. If that tells you what era we were in. And the most powerful conference we said was the Big Ten or the big 12. It was not the SEC. That the SEC wasn't just not regarded that way at the time. Maybe it was by SEC fans. But you know, the fact that auburn got left out in 2004 as the undefeated SEC champ, that would never happen today. Scott saxton, Windsor Ontario, frequent writer to the podcast. I'm 50 years old and I've been smitten with college football since the first game I ever watched on TV, which is the 1981 sugar bowl..

Tennessee game in knoxville taylor. Thanks so much for joining us. Give us the scene said and and what to build up has been life for a critical game for both schools. Paul so good to be honest with you. I think tennessee really has momentum coming off of that huge victory against missouri now granted it was against a defense in missouri giving up nearly forty points a game and so putting up sixty two points might not look this typically big time to a lot of folks that within this program they really feel like the offense is starting to look the way that they envision it looking and yet there's lots to build upon but they feel like that momentum is gonna carry over this weekend south carolina now for shane. Beamer looking for that illustrious. I as the c win and they feel confident as well that their program is headed in the right direction. Kinda starting to have some continuity with luke doty quarterback and they feel like each week as he gets more healthy he can really help carry often in the direction that they would like to see. Go specifically in the run game. They really wanna see him. Extend plays with his legs and and that comes with health no Farther along we get away from that ankle injury. The better for them taylor let. Let's talk about the tennessee quarterback situation because it has been perplexing If not exasperated. Follow it since the very beginning when milton started and then injuries and a lot of poor play created various scenarios. But it looks like josh hypo is finally found. His man he has and they they feel confident and hinden hooker and hendon's ability to make quality decision. That was the thing that we kept hearing from them. All week long is that they really like his decisiveness on the field. They like the way that he's even killed at something. You want out of a quarterback specifically in the sec guy. Who's not going to get to high is not gonna get too low and so they like the demeanor but they also like what when he brings this field really. Being decisive hasn't turned the football over and they're going to need this week again. South carolina team that we know Leave the conference and turnovers. Though i think they feel confident about him and just that continuity is important for this often. Taylor mcgregor part of the team though covering that really important south carolina tennessee game. Thanks so much a really appreciate it. Let's go back to the calls here in lexington at eight five five two four two seven two eight five and jason is up next Jason is in kentucky. Good afternoon. play ball going. We're doing great thank you. Yeah i was just a house call earlier in the wake you talk to. What's in you said that Hit made in make. It look easy and i couldn't agree more. I watch these games. And you know it's like you're just you're watching the wildcats and like you're you're waiting for other teams to make mistakes rather than them just fading people in against. We're gonna find out what they're made of the next few weeks But yeah it's like you know. I wanna to stoops's doing a really good job with the talent he has. But sometimes it's like you're watching woman your wife. And you know three stars with them sprinkled in poorer starters and he's playing in four stars sprinkled in stars and i guess you just build watching the games where you know. It's like you say in town with a better than god and he's making things happen. Well i think that's a that's a big part of his success is. He's found a way to to mold a lot of players who are good. But maybe not your prototypical five star alabama georgia recruits into a real team. I think that's what would finally is is coming together. I mean he he said something here. I mean it's one thing to.

What do you expect that running back rotation to look like and Yeah yeah i mean what. What are your thoughts on this. It's actually the call jackson. i. I'm not sure i mean those are those are big injuries. don't misunderstand me but you're talking about one of the deepest teams in the country. I i don't think you'll see tomorrow night. Because i i just think when when you consider what alabama doesn't have versus what a and doesn't have starting at hanes hanes king. They lost a key defensive player this week. They lost to starting offensive lineman. I think it is a mismatch. The real question. This game is can canadian. Amused kyle field. Can they use a man. Can they figure out some way to keep this respectable i. I don't think they have it. I mean right now. We're talking about a moral victory. A lady named rhonda has been calling us for a long time. She's been battling cancer. I just saw her a minute ago. And she's she's doing great and we were so proud to be able to report that but she asked me Rhonda asked me if i could Say hello to her. Eighty six year old father. Who is named fred. Who's having a birthday and lagrange kentucky. And i thought we just hold up this shine here and wish you a very happy birthday. Happy birthday fred and you keep building their rhonda. How many times. I use the word. Help me rhonda when she's called in. So let's get back to the calls and take some more as we continue here. As a coach stoops will join us momentarily. How gray up next. Hey greg go right ahead. How you doing paul. We're doing well thank you. Thank you for taking my call I'm a huge floor. Gators fan and i was really upset about lost this weekend but i wanted to get your thoughts on how you think we can turn this around and maybe try to compete for the championship and in the second question is your thoughts about the texas and oklahoma. Coming in the sec. I'm not a big fan of it and see what you think how that's long-term gonna affect the conference. Well i think the gators are In really in desperate shape right now for the sec because their two losses down so the idea that georgia could lose twice as hard for me to believe you know. Auburn might have one of the best shots at the dog. Just based on where. The game is in kentucky next week so i i am not high on that how do you how do you turn it around you. Just you play you execute better. You don't do it. you don't have team penalties..

You're on the winn-dixie parking lot trying to pick up some players for this team you know Jimbo fisher in the off-season he Talked a lot talked a lotta mess talking how he was going to be down on nick. Say the down on alabama that you know this just like everybody else. Saturday night is going to be a massacre. And i'm not talking about texas chainsaw massacre. I'm talking about the college station down alabama and it's gonna rolling their everyone's going to be on their couch about seven o'clock and nick sabin is gonna break his foot off. You know what it is gonna be a beatdown. Alabama is going to go to college station. Take that last week. They got and choke the life cop paulo my the fbi for that guy anyway. Jot is up next in kentucky. John good afternoon to you. Hey paul glenhaven bluegrass and represented. Hey wanted to talk a little bit about last week. florida going into that florida game. There's a lot of conversation about what kentucky was going to have to do to dominate that game and ultimately win and i felt like the big plays on special teams with turnover resulting in points. And then dominating. The line of scrimmage raw ultimately What got them the victory in albeit a very ugly game For the offense and it seems like the kentucky is starting to find those ways To win doing those things. And i wanted to see what you thought. The keys kentucky's baker. We're gonna bay tomorrow. Thank you for the call. I i always look at The intangibles in a game. I'll leave the the matchups to my brother in Who will be with us later but to me. I think it's an important game but you just try not to get too far ahead of your. We talk to rodriguez other day and and he admitted He was it was hard not to be thinking about the kentucky. The kentucky weren't over florida and not that anyone's looking ahead. But george is next week and fans tend to move move forward more than they should and i'm sure that mark stoops is messages this week. Maryland is up next Maryland thank you and welcome to our show today marilyn. We're doing great. Thank you I've been watching your show for a long time. And i've also been in auburn tiger for a long time and i've seen all three of our heisman trophies winners the year. They won the heisman. So i've i've got a lotta history but the I'm also thinking about the georgia game tomorrow. And i was born in georgia. I've got a lot of relatives that are going to be in georgia they. I'm gonna keep a low profile today. but the main reason i called. Is you craig. Oh look and go three. Our defensive person who passed away a few months ago i knew him personally and i tell gators with the old gotree family right before the eighty nine arm boat. I'd gotten tickets through an auburn scholarship donor. Who i've met and Anyway craig. Gujri was fantastic. Perks and his family was great. And he somehow he'd given his tickets away to other family members and friends and his poor mother got stuck out so i do the scholarship donor. Gave me two free tickets on the twenty yard. Line right under the press box anyway. i gave miss ogle treak other tickets. So me and craig's mother said together during the eighty nine go and i was there and it was just were that was Thanks for the call by the way. That was an epic game. That was one of the most important games i've ever been to Between auburn alabama. That was the first time ever at urine hare. stadium. Let's talk to michael next. Who is in kentucky. Hey michael go right ahead. Eight ball you. We're doing great. Thank you Well i know a lot of people have said that the keys to this game i think is going to be Not turning the ball over being able to run the ball and you know. Get some turnovers on defense. Well yeah i mean when you think about this game last week i'm not taking anything away from uk. But but florida just couldn't shoot straight and they they really inadvertently or because of the mistakes allowed kentucky to continue to get momentum. And that's that. That doesn't happen all the time. So i i think i'm really i'll say my commentary because mark stoops will be here in a few minutes. I'll definitely let him give us some views of of how the week has gone. Marshall is up next in south carolina. hello marshal doing. We're doing great weekend. I liked him a lot. I i think tennessee has really been surprising. You think about thi. This is an important game because i think south carolina. When you think about beamer taking over probably took over a better program than what. The josh hypol- took over so there's no question in my mind. Tennessee is played better. south carolina fans. You know can feel good about their non conference wins. But i think they have a long way to go and and quite frankly. I like tennessee in this game. Well blocked off there and the brian. I think he'd be just are all. That's the question now. Another thing i think including some fans they have on their satit they were. They were in our space. They they get all. They're all starting to come back. No more is a trophy. Talk down there from that. They're they're he'll have a hard time making always all acc. Which i think. I'm well aware of the the of saving losing his first game to lsu I was in the stadium in two thousand and ten when he lost that game. I was in the stadium the next year when he lost the game at bryant denny stadium and i was there two years ago and he lost. I'm pretty. Let's grab some calls here a lot of interesting comments on the program today. And if i can figure out where this cursor is i will check him with michael in knoxville tennessee. Hey michael good afternoon. Hey paul how you doing today. we're well thank you with an. I just wanna say the idea that gene chizik have of having time for timeframe for players to be able to enter. The transporter is one of the best ideas that i have heard in a long time. Probably that bad is just well thought out and it would be great playing so these players don't just make these crazy decisions and then regret it you days later. Yeah i thought coach was really spot on. That was a brilliant deduction from him and i. I've always liked coach chizik. But i don't know anyone in the media from his perspective meaning former coach. Who makes more sense than he does. Common sense very much so we'll more quick question. How do you think jeremy hypo did. Did he win the press conference today. I think he did well I don't know if he's going to win. An oscar. But i think most people appreciate what he had to say. Hey thank you for the call. We're up against a break. Oh we've had to. Sec head coaches in the last hour. A couple of other major players in the sec will join us in a moment. We are live from s. e. c. Meet as a final hour of the day right.

"mark stoops" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show
"Hey we're back here. A lot of people wondered if we'd ever have a lane kiffin on again after the last appearance when he admonished me for some minor event that happened back in twenty thirteen. But forget teen. It was two thousand and nine you up here last the second as a head coach. We didn't have this last year as head coach at the university of tennessee. So you made it back. I did twelve years. A lot has happened. Paul But we're here. i've lost track of. How many coaches tennessee has had since then. But i'm sure there's a record keeper up in knoxville. It's good to have you and you. You made a lot of news today already and we never want you to make news on this program but we do want to elaborate for those who. Maybe we're not with us earlier. The story. I mentioned a couple of minutes ago. Nick sabin said today in texas at a high school coaches meeting in relation to an i l. Bryce young quarterback who has not started yet but is expected to To be quite a player is approaching seven figures. That's a million dollars for you out there who aren't good nath in nfl money and you were saying off the year that because i went back and read the story to you really had a hard time speaking afterwards or yeah that blew my mind away. They brought up at that. Bryce has made a million dollars they phrased. It's already made a million dollars. You know which is amazing and great for the kids for the players you know. Usually they give you the notes before of what's coming that one wasn't in my notes that now if you were making a million dollars before they play for. They started game so awesome for rice. You joke to. I think he does that. Mean he can take the almost game. I mean he's already made a million now and he hadn't even started a game yet. By the time it gets to that game you could just take off and get ready for the nfl. Rest great quarterbacks and that would be an understatement. But does that offer. Where's the biggest challenge to the coaching staff in the locker room. Is there one why. I think when you were just saying it to me and i said to you coach saving and just the first thing i thought about over rat poison and how much he tries to control. You know what's being said outside to build players up you know to to control them. Control their egos. Now you've got guys in. That's why i blew me away. We're not talking about a year later. And he's made a million dollars over a year. We're seeing you know. They're saying he's already making a million dollars. Which is crazy. What's going to happen once you start playing you know. And then the ability to control the players that challenges. You're gonna guess eventually players making more than coaches but habits in professional sports so we are now as you kind of said professional sports now. I know it's almost cliche to continued. Ask you about nick sabin. And he'll be here tomorrow. But i would like to ask one more in terms of why you think he said that. Today because nick saban doesn't say things willy nilly you've been around them a lot that you worked for him. What do you think was behind his message paulie. He didn't just throw that out. That was very well planned in recruiting. And like when you read me the article how was phrased in the brand of alabama as is why bryce is making that much money. That was not by accident. Because i think for people that know coach. And and you've been around them. I think that that's a whole other set of challenges that he's not real excited about now as you know controlling players making that much money and he's always done a great job of managing players egos you know and and so now you've got a whole nother aspect of with players that much money. This isn't a serious question. But since a lot of your fans have called us thinking that your quarterback is the best in the sec. What's he worth. I don't know easily started. some games. i guess they gave me the notes before had the most yards last year of anybody in the nc double per game. So that's got to be worth. Bryce has a million before starting. If it's gotta be worth couple of million. I would think corral worth a couple million the agents are taking your your your words here to to the market as we speak. Let's talk about some some football because last year was almost great year. And i know how frustrating it was to see. Some of those games slip away. What are your thoughts about what we're about to see. I like that. You said it that way paul. That's how i think you know. I was frustrated. And when i look back at it you know so many opportunities and games. Alabama game especially auburn. Lsu games that we should have one. And i think if we would've coached better we would have won those games so excited about the future excited about this season coming up but when i looked to it i know. There's a lot of excitement around the program how he finished and outback bowl win. Being a top ten team. But i just look at it differently. What it could have been in so sometimes that can be good. You know because there have been a whole another set of challenges you know had we won more games in dealing with all the preseason rankings and things that would have come with that so. We're excited to get ready to go. And actually it will be back in a recruitment. Let me switch to. What was the big story here yesterday in that. It's a story that just won't go away and going to go away until some things are resolved but the commissioner sent out a pretty serious message in relation to cova and index scenes. And these are all very complex and personal issues. Unless it's being discussed publicly and unless the commissioner of the sec sec is talking about forfeiture how how are you addressing that issue with with your team we would like our guys to get back stated it's it's not as simple as you would think you're going to it and making it mandatory. I don't think we can really do that. So you know we. We want our guys to We tell them at the same time we respect in a lot of times. It's their family. Someone in their family. That doesn't want them to. So you know we respect that and just we have speakers coming in just this week coming up to help educate because i know there's a lot of different things out there you know that the kids read and families read To educate our guys on it and if they say no we're do you go. I haven't got that far paul. Sure that i don't know legally how that works and so i don't know that answer. Yep it's complex. So and i think it. I'm not sure. I mean there are a lot of issues that we deal with. But i'm not sure there's one that this personal in this difficult and this important let me let me talk about just you Because you're not gonna talk about coach saban. I don't like it was funny when you phrased it that way about. Hey we're talking about saving. I thought about our press conference was over. Fifty percent bribe out coach. I remember when. I guess we're brand name for four him. I reached a point. Would kirby smart ones when when he said you know. You just interviewed me. And you didn't bring up. Nick sabin. I thought that was a line of demarcation. So you're you're such a character though was coach saving and you don't you have fun with an which brings me to twitter. Sabin is still twitter..

Ohio State football has everything at stake against Penn State
"We got Penn State Ohio State this weekend, and it's a playoff game. It is, what do you expect? Well, and to your point, people always like expand the playoff and go to eighteen sixteen teams. This is a playoff game. It is. This is an elimination game. I'm going to be at another one up. These are the games and we talk about this game on this show because with that playoff predicted that tells you even if you were just an essay. Person, and that's all you watch. You don't watch any game outside of the conference. You need to keep an eye on this one because you're going to see more than likely one of these teams because listen that play predictor at Penn State where to win this game this weekend, they're the ones that are gonna take over that number four spot. I expect shootout and going into the year, honestly before I was there and personal Saturday, I'm might not have believed that Ohio State could keep up in a shootout with trace McSorley and Penn State. Dwayne Haskins is, is the truth may legit, oh, he's the truth. And there's a reason Joe boroughs at LSU. Yeah, Joe borough is at LSU because Dwayne Haskins beat him out for the Ohio State quarterback job. They engaged in quite a battle during the spring Haskins ultimately wins at I in Happy Valley all day Tuesday. I'm doing a big feature for sportscenter on Saturday on one of a Penn State's offense of linemen. And I talked spoke extensively with James Franklin who you see here, not only for that feature but about his team. He loves his team. They lost a ton offensively. This saquon Barkley to the New York Giants day. Sean Hamilton was one. Of the best and most underrated wide receivers in the country. Last year they got bowlers. So you would expect, okay, they're going to fall off authentically, oh, Appalachian state gave them all they could handle in week one that was actually a great learning experience with this group. So they have resorted all trace McSorley does is win. He is tougher than woodpecker lips man. And I think this one is going to be attract me. I agree with you, and it's going to be so fun to what I learned this from you that trace McSorley won four consecutive state championship, all he does win. All it does all that that young man does is win football games
