"And I put Anthony grant and Mark Schmidt on my list on the back end there. What Mark Schmidt has been able to do. Mark Schmidt said, good one. That marks his foot good ones. I basically pick Mark Schmidt over Brad Underwood. And again, you know, we're splitting hairs. Mark Schmidt's level of difficulty is so insane at saint bonaventure is particularly when you see when he took that job. And I didn't want to make this only a power conference kind of thing here that I wanted to lob him lop him a vote. I knew he probably wouldn't crack through because I didn't know if anyone else would have voted for him. Anthony grant, he did not thrive at Alabama, but when you look at his career in totality and I did make it a little bit, I did bacon just a little bit of predictiveness here. I think, you know, if Dayton can do what we're thinking it should do and by that, I mean, sit somewhere between a three seat and a 6 seat or 7 seat this season when we get to the tournament. Like, I think he will have a valid, you know, could have had a one C two three years ago, we didn't have a damn tournament. That's probably working against him a little bit there. I did not vote for the, okay, obviously, shyer, not on the list. He hasn't coached a game. We can't put him on. And that was my thing. Shire was initially on my group of people to consider and I was like, I think he'll be on this list next year, I believe. But he has not at the time we submitted our ballots. He had not coached a game, and I was like, maybe that should be where I set the bar. You have to at least have coached one game before you could make this list. I didn't put the likes of Tommy Lloyd Hubert Davis on the list. They were really good in year one. I just needed it personally. I just needed a little more on the resume. I need a little more on the pile. They were certainly under consideration, but frankly, I traded off between like, right now, if you gave me Tommy Lloyd to run my program or Jim beham made my list, I would take Tommy Lloyd quite clearly, but I wanted to at least have a nod to beheim who was one of the best coaches of all time before, you know, for publishing lists, it says the top 25 and one coaches in college basketball. To me, Jim baham needs to be on that list for all that he's done there. But it wasn't easy. And again, the criteria was not strict to all of us. We were able to interpret it the way they were. We haven't done this before. And it is pretty fascinating. I also am looking at this a couple other thoughts. One, you know, we did this was made a bit easier by the fact that we have had a lot of really good Hall of Fame level coaches leave the sport in the past year or two. So when enabled other coaches to be under consideration and ultimately make the list there, I didn't include juwan Howard, that's also a pretty good one. That was the one when he made it onto our final list. I was like, yeah, you know, like, there's something to be said for that juwan Howard versus my friend. I think Juan belongs on the list. I think that's probably got to be on there. I think he's, again, he's probably got to be on there. But overall, I just read off the back end. You heard Paris read the top ten if you need to rewind, go back and listen again. I don't really have a ton of issues. I only think that Sean Miller has got, you know, you can shrug him off at the same way that you might want to with Bill self at one and I get all that. And I think he will eventually be face suspension whenever the IAR, P case comes down, but I just think he is a quite clearly a top 25 coach in the game. That's the only one who didn't make the list that I think probably has a right to it, but there you have it. The truth is, and I think this is the way, by the time you get to January, the top 25 and one that I do every morning also looks. Like when you get outside of the top 15, the next 25 to 30 are all reasonable candidates. And so there's some guys that undeniably have to be on this list like Bill Mark fu Scott drew John calipari Kelvin Sam and Tony Bennett Tom is over Bruce pearl Mick cronin. I think Eric musselman at this point, Rick Pitino Matt painter, Chris beard, Rick Barnes. Like I think that group that group has to be on everybody's list. And then you get into, you know, do you want buzz Williams or Dana Altman? Do you want Andy infielder Greg McDermott? Do you want Jamie Dickson or juwan Howard? And I think after about the top 15 to 20, you could do another 20 to 25. And it's all reasonable. Agreed. I like seeing that Randy Bennett made the list. You and I might have, I don't know if Boone or Cobb put him on, but so you and I might have a single handedly made sure that's the case. Similar situation to Mark Schmidt obviously, I mean, saint Mary's is a tiny, tiny school in the middle of Morocco, California that he's been able to at least keep with an arms length of a Gonzaga program that's become a behemoth. I think he objectively has to be right there. And yeah, McDermott, McDermott made top 25. That's valid and it might be more validated by what creighton could be this season, similar to what I was doing with some projection with Dayton there. We'll link this in the podcast description if you want to give it a read. David Cobb did the capsules for all these guys. It was certainly pretty intriguing. And I've heard a little bit of feedback there from the list. As is to be expected there. But I'm with you when I look at this because I'm kind of scrolling back right through here. Top 15 overall, pretty good case for guys that just need to be in that mix there. And again, we go self one, few two. Now, if you doesn't have a national title, drew has a national light. Yeah. So I've never heard that before. Okay. But let's just focus on the top just to begin. I struggled with this because I did rank few ahead of drew by one spot. Few was just done it longer, I don't know. It's just one spot to whatever. But I was like, who deserves to go in the spot more? You know, and to me, it was a, it was a big time toss up, but lo and behold, that's how it shakes out few too. Drew has a national title. He's three. Cal is a national title. He's four. Samson doesn't. Maybe you'll have one in 5 months, but when you look at what he's done at Houston, has been big. Bennett has a national title. He's 6 is so obviously. He's at 7 pearl does not cronin does not muscleman does not patino does. He's the lowest rank one on the list with the national title. There are others obviously that have made a final four. As you continue to move on down the list there, very fun exercise. And yeah, just a correction. Jim baham would be the lowest guy. With a national championship, but still, you get the point. So that's the list. If you haven't seen it yet, go check it out at CBS sports dot com. Or if Twitter is still around, you can find it on Twitter. You ready to do the first final four in one of the season? Well, hold on. Hold on, hold on. All right.

"Star on the rise. Don't know if this will happen immediately, but I do think that he'd be one under consideration. Maybe Mark Schmidt, at saint bonaventure. Another name. Those are four. But the name that I actually think is going to get it. And I've seen the chat right now. God bless the chat. Brad Stevens the butler. I'm actually Brad Stevens is not going to be one of my 5 names. I was going to throw it in. I really was. Brad Stevens is not one of the 5 names, although you want to talk about an all time stunner. Stunner. Not Brad Stevens. Jeff bulls at Ohio. I talked to a few sources. Here's what actually is going to happen. That mata, I think my transition into the athletic department because there's been some buzz about fad mata, would he be the guy to get the butler job. Actually, I think there's a good chance that he transitions to work four butler when I was the head coach and then bowls was a former assistant under Thad matta, Jeff bulls is your next head coach at butler. That's my guess as of today. To me, and then talking to sources, he would be the leading candidate to get the butler job. We'll see what plays out over the next day or two, four, 5, 6 days. It's certainly going to be pretty interesting. Before we get to all American teams, any other thoughts on Jeff bulls any other candidates on the butler job as the news breaks here on Friday. It's had already took my Brad Stevens dropped. I guess he's probably comfortable what he's doing with the Celtics. I can't imagine he'd leave. And also there's no chance. But gosh, I love the Brad Stevens chatter. Just never ends. Exactly. Fantastic. Listen, the chat is not exactly eager on the laval stuff. It's breaking news and I'm giving you Intel. What else do you want from me? We will talk final four and we will talk matchups. But I also want to talk about our all American teams, our player of the year, because this is a Friday show, and you know.

"Start to heal Yeah I absolutely feel that I'm able to start healing It feels like such a slow process but I feel I have more resources This program helps me kind of find that and how to find myself and even in the hard times because there will always be hard times in the future and everyone's lives Yeah Mark Schmidt and I'm going to bring you back in here to end I wonder if you could tell us what you think at stake We just heard Katherine's story there A lot of people are talking about how nurses and doctors are so burnt out that they can't even come to work Well burnout and what we're talking about here are two different things Burnout is a manifestation of what we're talking about It's an effect of what we're talking about But the burnout we're talking about are the moral injury that we're talking about rather is a spirit one It's a wounded a soul And once this thing gets over and the operational tempo drops that is going to allow to allow these rules to come up to the surface And if there is a way to be able to affirm to be able to say you're not alone But what you're going to have at the end if we don't address these things is a healthcare system that's going to be in a hell of this because we're working with walking wounded it's going to reach a breaking point Mark symbol funding is a chaplain at rush university medical center in Chicago and nurse Catherine king Has joined us as well Thank you so much for both of your time I wish you all the best Have a good day The city of San Francisco is relaxing mask requirements even as the state of California is keeping its indoor mask mandate for at least to know the two weeks Starting today in San Francisco if you're fully vaccinated and boosted you don't have to wear a mask anymore in certain places such as the office in the classroom or at the gym Let's bring in KQED health reporter Leslie McClure Leslie what does the change to the mask mandate mean for the people's San Francisco Well I think this allows a lot more movement than people can go to the office and take their masks off They can go to the gym They can go to church Students can return indoor to college classes and take their masks off as basically applies to places where there's a stable group of vaccinated people This was cut the rule that was in place before the amaran surge so back in December you will though this time have to show proof of a booster shot to go maskless And if you're unvaccinated you actually can enter these spaces but you do need to get a negative test and wear a mask If you're unvaccinated Okay so as you said part of the reason for the change is that San Francisco has a high vaccination rate 82% There has also been economic pressure we know from businesses and individuals who have won at the city to loosen the reins and lose the masks But it's thought the decision to drop the mask mandate in offices and classrooms could also be a carrot to get people to come back into the office What does it mean I wonder for you personally Leslie is somebody who works in an office in San Francisco I'll go back to work Yeah I talked to our producer our morning edition producer this morning and I said how many people are at the office today And he said well I'm still the only one So I don't think people are going back in droves today that I think over the next couple of weeks will probably see a trickle start going back in and as soon as this acron really tapers off which is expected in the next couple of weeks you know we're seeing cases drop pretty fast right now I think people will both be motivated by this relaxation in the mask mandate and also because they'll feel safe enough to do so So we'll see a lot more traffic downtown I will be going to the office again which I was before the amaran surge And I think that will be begin to become more popular across the board in the Bay Area In the San Francisco area And just to be clear you've been working as everybody else at KQED It's just they're not in the office except for that one One producer morning edition So a question that always comes up when rules change is enforcement And as you said some people are going to be able to lose them masks Some will have to keep the masks on So who is going to tell people when they do have to wear the mask Yeah so basically businesses are responsible to make sure that this is happening But there is in the order there is an enforcement clause in there that the share for the police department could be brought in if there are reports that businesses are not following this order So if that happens if a business is not complying then they could be forced to vacate the premises or even close until the Department of Health allows them to reopen But I don't expect that in San Francisco we didn't see that before And I didn't expect that going forward But maybe because there's this new nuance with unvaccinated folks potentially we could see it going forward Okay And very briefly California's statewide mask mandate is in place for another two weeks at least how likely is that they going to hold given that the forecast for COVID are in the next few weeks I think the case rates are dropping fast enough that that could happen but I don't think it's quite a guarantee just yet Probably either.

"Or are you mostly just doing all the talking? I'm curious. Always, I like to be as interactive and engaging as I possibly can. I get a different if I'm actually presenting content and then okay, I'll take your questions. I love to use the different softwares or variety of them out there. I use ecom for max. There's StreamYard streamy over all that. So you can put the commenters to other comments up on the screen. I love seeing their name up there on the screen. And it's just so much fun. I love to engage with them. And I always like to stay their first name and a really compliment people and maybe ask where they're from. And what questions they have? And how can I help them? And I honestly just said this for years and especially for the last two years, there's no amount of sophisticated technology that can never take the place of these live and in person events, but the next best thing is video and live video. So wonderful to create that intimacy and connection with your audience. Okay, audio, audio rooms. Talk about audio rooms because this is kind of fascinating. It is indeed so interesting when Facebook brought out this live audio rooms as the name of the product. Back in around April of 2021, it seemed to me, Mike, I'm not sure how you felt about the announcement. It seemed to me that it was very much in response to the wildly popular Clubhouse a 100%. It's like practical perfect copy, right? And then they're like, oh no, no, we've been working on this for like the past year or two. Yeah, right. Right. So but then, of course, you know, the popularity of Clubhouse seems to have waned. It's kind of plateaued a little bit. There's the die hard fans. A lot of people still going crazy over it. And yeah, I see Facebook's trucking away here with this live audience rooms. I recently got it in my groups and I could really see a very good use case for just a game creating that more intimate connection having a good conversation where it's multi ways like a community conversation as opposed to I'm just talking to them in kind of like how we do in post. Yeah, it's so cool because you don't have to be camera ready, right? Yeah, exactly. 100%. You could do the same thing with live video that you do with live audio, but just talking, right? Totally. But it requires other people to talk as well because that's the important part. There is no chat, right? So it's just talking. Oh, wait, no, stop the press. The cool thing of what Facebook's done with these live audio rooms is it creates a post on your wall, whether it's your profile page or group. And on that post, you can have people type questions. They don't have to talk. Right, but I don't remember those questions like popping up like they do in the light. No, no, no, no, they won't be featured on the little audio player. You have to kind of remember to go back over there and look at them, right? But it is pretty cool and it's a great way to kind of almost create a live podcast. That's true. I've been very excited with it and I know Mark Zuckerberg has been using it a lot, hasn't he? Yeah, he has, I've seen him bring in all kinds of different guests. And initially, like, way back months ago, I saw numerous pretty high level celebrities like Lindsey Stirling, the violent player. People like that, huge rappers, gamers, and doing really well with it. But in our industry, Mike, I have not seen a whole big uptake and I'm just wondering if it's still so new that the audience members are like, what's this how do I participate? Well, there's a lot of competition, right? You've got Twitter spaces, you've got Clubhouse, even though they've got hundreds of thousands of rooms that happen today over there on Clubhouse, believe it or not. It still is an active alternative and you've got all these other platforms. I want to mention podcast and I know you don't have a podcast, but I can speak at least from my perspective having added both of my podcasts to our Facebook page. What's cool is Facebook automatically publishes the podcast on Facebook and publishes it to the feed. Yes. I don't have to do anything. And what's cool is you can listen to podcasts now on Facebook and you can shut down the app and just like a regular podcast player and listen to it. I don't know if you've heard anything more about it than what I just said, but I'm kind of excited as a new distribution platform for podcasters. I think it's brilliant. And like I mentioned earlier, there's 9 different ways and that is actually number 9 is the podcast. And if anybody you're listening, if you've got a podcast, definitely get it over hooked up onto your Facebook page because that's free visibility. They have that nifty little feature where people can also take clips. You can choose to enable it or not. But somebody's listening to 45 minute podcasts and they hear a two minute clip. Oh my God, I want to share this clip with my audience. They can totally do that. So it's a really clever feature. There's a chance some people are listening to us on Facebook right now. Yes, I love it. Mari, if people want to follow you or find out more about some of the services and products that you have available, where do you want to send them? "Mark turgen, you know, no longer being the coach at Maryland. I mean, I guess that was always inevitable. It's inevitable for everybody by definition. But this always felt like I don't know that I ever expected it to end 8 games into a season, but I did always expect it to end with him either parachuting out or getting pushed out because he not because he ever runs it into the ground, but because he just didn't do enough. Okay. My two final thoughts here are Maryland's just it becomes a huge mystery team to me now. Does the team rally under Danny and do they get themselves into a position in the Big Ten where they can make the tournament? I don't know. They just become, you know, middle of the pack or worse and that league and then barely even in the NIT or worse. I'll be interested to see how this team responds over the next couple of weeks and down the stretch into February and just see what happens there. And then whenever a job like this opens, obviously you want to discuss candidates. It's extremely early, and let me emphasize one thing here. Performance this season will also have an impact on what the candidate pool really is. Barring there being some sort of situation where it's, you know it's a few people that Maryland and a coach and his representative and those are the only people that know and there's some sort of deal that's agreed to and say late January or whatever. Barring that kind of situation happening and surfacing, you will have coaches having good teams in January to February, making tournament runs and how that might impact because obviously you want to time this well. You don't want to have a situation where you'd hire someone and they're in the midst of a bad run or they're on the downturn. As one example with this, you know, Mike bray and knows the area well. Mike bray has told me on the record multiple times, Notre-Dame will be his final college basketball job. So never say never with any of that, I don't even know if Mike bray would be top three candidate for Maryland, but he has done a really good job for a long time at Notre-Dame, but it's kind of a little bit on the downturn. We'll see if he can get it turned around there. He knows the magnetized the whole deal. You'll probably see his name fill it out there. I wouldn't expect that, but whatever. Some names, I would say, if you're looking for a coach that's done well from the area that's really outside the box. Again, this is just initial guys that I would consider. Andy Enfield is from that area and has done a really good job at USC. I don't know if you want to leave Southern California to go to Maryland. Don't know if Maryland would consider him among the top of their list. But he's one that pops to mind. Kevin Willard definitely pops to mind there. He's had a really good run of seat and hall. I could see Kevin Willard coach in ten more years. It's eaten all. I could also see a situation where Kevin Willard wants to choose a change of scenery. He wants to reboot, and then we'll kind of wait and see. That kind of feels like almost like, let's see what Seattle looks like this season. And if they're really, really good, maybe his name becomes even hotter. Mark Schmidt, saint bonaventure has deserved a bigger job. 5 years at this point, I would absolutely put him on my list if I was Maryland. And then Mark Pope at BYU is a coach that I think just it doesn't matter where he goes. He's inevitably going to if he wants it. They're going to the big 12, but that's not happening for a couple of years. They're basically running like a high major program at BYU now. Again, I'm not assigning intention to any of these coaches. This is me scanning on my own over the past 30 minutes and looking what coaches might make sense. Those are the ones you mentioned Kim English. She's from the era. He just started at George Mason, not that he couldn't be the next coach at Maryland or anything like that. He's from the area. They beat Marilyn. I get all that. Marilyn fans are probably already side eyeing. We made jokes on the podcast about it parish. I don't know. He's really young. We'll have to wait and see on that. And then there's one coach that's a big name that I'm not sure if he's ever going to return to college coaching, but I'll just mention him here. John B line is 68. I mean, he's got a role with the pistons now. He'd be a good hire, but how long would he want to coach there? I don't know how likely that would or would not be. So, you know, just to defeat the curiosity of those listeners, because once this happens, you're always thinking about who's next. That's just an initial scanning. Don't know if it'll be any of those guys. And I think there's a good chance that once we get to the middle of February, there could be two or three guys at different schools that make a lot of sense based on the success they've had this season. You were joking earlier when you mentioned Rick Pitino. I don't think that's crazy. It's not crazy. I just I mean, there is nothing about Rick patino or the sport of college basketball that disqualifies him from being a high major coach. Literally nothing. You look around the country. We don't have to name names and look at some of the other people who are still coaching college basketball and high major level. What they've been accused of is far worse as it pertains to NCAA rules than what Rick patino was actually accused of. Like, I know that Rick's program was involved in some wild stuff, but what has Rick actually been accused of? It's not disqualifying. If I tell you this, if I were Maryland, I'd at least, at least think about it. Another name that somebody tos out at me, you know, right before we started this podcast, Archie Miller, but struggle in the conference. Well, that's the problem. If you're Maryland, do you go, I mean, and let me be clear. That's something I would have something I would consider. I would at least think about it, talk about it. Archie went from the hottest young coach in America to fire, but I don't think he got dumber or worse coach while I was at Indiana. It just didn't go the way any of us thought.

"So I'm really high on Colorado state. I don't know if I should be, but Nico medved has had success at every stop that he's been at. He's part of the ten miles coaching tree and we know how much success to miles had when he was coaching at Colorado state. You can make the argument that they have two of the three best players in the mountains. I think great sherfield is probably the best player in the mountain west. That's Nevada. Yeah, Nevada, and then some people are going to make the argument that transferring into San Diego state, the kid from cow. What's his name? Matt Bradley. Bradley. Yeah, Matt Bradley is the best player in the mountain west. I think you can make a very strong argument that Isaiah Stevens and David roddy are two of the three best players in that league. You put that together with the way that they can kind of play and the fact that I think that they're going to continue to get better defensively. I'm in on Colorado state winning that conference. Oh wow, that's a take I have not heard yet, but I like it. I think that's a really interesting I bet you could get pretty good odds on Colorado state to win the mountain mustard. As good as you think, I think they're plus 300 right now. Yeah, I would have guessed like plus 500. Interesting. Yeah, to me, this team is Bonnie's. I think they bought a venture is going to be really good. Older team soon, osini is a terrific big who should be able to really do a lot defensively for a saint Bonnie's team that finished top 20 nationally last year. Kyle Lofton is terrific guard in the backcourt. They're old as hell, like I can't imagine that there is going to be an older team this year in college basketball, outside of like maybe a couple of mid majors, right? Yeah, I mean they're up there. I don't know if they're the oldest but Belmont is definitely the most experienced theme in the country. They start like four guys that are redshirt seniors or something like that, but it's amazing. I mean, the Bonnie's. And the other thing about the bammies is they might have a top 15 coach in the sport where we'd be probably don't want to go down the road of ranking the best coaches in college basketball. But whatever list you're putting together like you have to at least mention Mark Schmidt, right? Yeah, Mark smith's really good. Really, really good. Really good on court coach for sure. Okay, let's go to do we want to talk about the Missouri valley at all real quick? You know, we kind of mentioned both the other leagues like I think oil is going to be really good under drew Valentine again. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they're going to be really good. Stock can be pretty. It's going to be like physical defensive minded basketball, but they're probably going to be really good again. Yep, and then any other thoughts on the West Coast conference. We've got BYU and we've got San Francisco. I would say are probably the next two teams that are most exciting there..

"Teams came back during the bob Lanier era, but this is probably going to be the best Bond adventure team not from the greater 1970 71 72 era. Like big time stuff, that's the best. That's the best mid major team this season because saint bonaventure is a mid major program. If you've ever been there, I know how it operates like it just is Mark Schmidt's a magician there. A couple other ones if you're looking for a small schools that you should be aware of. Well, one more surprise in my top 25 because it's a team that I think you probably didn't even consider. Now, when you do your top 25 and one, you basically have a shifting group of what like 33 34 teams under consideration? Well, I mean, I start from opening night and then it dwindles. It typically dwindles over. If you're ranked 26th on the night of the title game, there's a good chance you ain't gonna survive it 'cause teams are going to add pieces, big pieces that push them into the rankings and then knocks you out. Unless you're somebody who also acts. Like if you are in the Clubhouse at 26 on the night of the title game, you ain't gonna make it. So I do end up like there were some teams that have been I've had ranked at various points in the off season. They got bumped out by I don't know Memphis jumping in. And other schools jumping. I think Oregon jumped in at some point when it did something Illinois jumped in when it got Kofi back. So USC was ranked at one I had them at one point that they're not in there now. Syracuse, I know I had in there at one point. They're not in there now. So it ends up being about, yeah, 30 to 32, 33 teams that at some point were probably in there. And I still keep the rosters in a file. So I can grab them if I ever need them. Okay, so I think the one team I have in my top 25 that's not in your bucket is Xavier. Would that be accurate? I never considered Xavier. That is true, but I am not ignorant to some of the preseason metrics. Like they are, I believe top 20 at torvill. Are they really? Okay. That's frustrating. But okay. Only because I thought I was maybe sneaking in the back door with X because at the end of it, I started doing this..

He had really good senior senior noncommissioned. individuals helping him out and Well end up doing three tours. Enough ghanistan His first one was about a year. Well it it's what he loved to do. He loved this country he absolutely loved it. And like i said from the some time time nine eleven happened. This is what he wanted to do. You know and when i talk about compassion and love he was he was. He was the love of the family you know. He had his two sisters that act at just absolutely loved him as they should They looked at the ham and england to him for everything they called. They called him bubba. he get mad at missy if they called him taylor and you know. He's got several aunts and uncles on both sides Several cousins on both sides And he was the first born on both sides of the family as well but when he gets with his cousins and aunts and uncles it was. It was fun fast. Everybody would run taylor. Everybody walked in the room all the little kids workout in. You only pick them up. Hug him squeezing tickle them just the whole family meant everything to taylor and we were so happy when he found the coal She's a she's a little bit fire just like he was but she kept him in check. That's up to you. I don't really wanna drag you into my world. I'd i've more want to honor your sons than anything else i have. Two kids of my own Is around the same eight. My daughter was born. Thirteen days before nine eleven. Oh one and She's now twenty at the same age as your son You never stopped worrying about your kids. I'm sure every day. Your sons are in a war zone. You really worrying about him. He probably not sleeping at all yes he. He was about six months old. Just a little over six months old when when nine eleven hit and His mother told me that he started talking about joining the marines of the in third grade. I believe it was You know which is obviously just too young for that but he stuck with that and Made sure that it came true for him and he had he was Extremely lovable Brother two two two two sisters My half brother here in my side half brother mom side and a stepbrother. My son as well so he's us from a big family and every single person just looked up to him. They knew that he was Selfless that is probably the best word to describe him. He would do anything for anyone for any reason Great friends have so many found that out. Now i i knew everybody loved him but grief the boring has been tremendous and people coming out of the woodwork. That have told me stories of how dare had changed them. Personally you know it just melts my heart His mom is Obviously struggling with us as we all are but we're looking forward to having him home and You know it just tears me up the most that there's a young man that's twenty years old can't legally drink we all know he already did You know he didn't have a chance to get married. You didn't have a chance to join the family business. Which is recently discussed slipped him that he said after the core he was considering coming to work with me and you know i would have been extremely honored to have him on board and he and i were actually talking about him buying a car when he got back and when he got out of the core finding an apartment you know and just getting his life started and I was trying to find some information from him that he gave me months ago. So i had to go through the text messages from him this morning and i was extremely difficult but Just looking back and seeing all the things that he was talking about he was wanting to do after after he was done in the core and To know that none of these things are going to happen now is just. "Those book to. Npr's audie cornish from doha. Now president biden said this week that ninety eight percent of americans who wanted to leave afghanistan were able to those remaining americans. There is no deadline. We remain committed to get them out if they want to come out. Fighting also defended his decision not to keep the. Us military in the country longer doing so he argued would have required sending even more troops into harm's way and at a time when veterans face battles at home to eighteen of them a day on average die by suicide. I don't think enough people understand how much we've asked of the one percent of this country who put that uniform on willing to put their lives on the line in defense of our nation two thousand four hundred sixty one american troops died in afghanistan over the last twenty years thirteen of them just this past week in that attack on the kabul airport. One of those was marine lance corporal. Jared schmitz he was twenty years old just six months old when nine eleven happened. Jared was an energetic little guy. He he was constantly happy. If you have the opportunity to look through our photo albums you would see that no matter how. He captured him on a camera. He was always smiling nonstop. Carrots father mark. He told npr that jared decided in high school instead of going to college following his dad in the family business. He wanted to join the marines. Yeah it was About sophomore year of high school gut reaction probably an equal mix of proud crowdedness as well as fear concern. But i knew that it fit like a glove. Then last month it came time for jarod's first deployment. He told his dad. He couldn't say where he was going. And like a good father got it out of him And told them you know you got to be incredibly careful. Jared stayed in touch with his dad when he got to kabul. They texted back and forth but at one point last week it had been a few days since they'd been in contact mark schmidt's shared what happened next within. Npr's rachel martin so then when this attack happened i was just gut wrenching feeling for our military and their families. You know that somebody just lost her life over this in the back of my mind though. Of course thinking my mom my son's okay. At least you know. That's thank god for that. You know another day goes by still hadn't heard from. I'm starting to get kind of worked up and upset like what's going on. Why is he not getting all of us in my friend. Patrick who's a marine as well. He's lucky he's real busy so he'll get to you when he can ensure everything's spine and It was later that night to forty in the morning. You're knocking on the door. And there's two dark silhouettes on the other side of our glass door slip. The porch light on and lights just went right on their ribbons and medals on their. You know the rest part of their jackets and uniforms. My heart just sunk. you know. i'm like okay. They're here to tell me he's injured. But is injuries are it took forever for them to get me to comprehend that they were there to deliver the most horrific moose so that conversation. Where you manage to get jared to tell you. He was deploying taff ghanistan. That was that was your last with him. That was my last phone conversation with him. But we we've been able to stay in communication via tax. I was looking for some information that he had given me a while back. So i have to jump in my text messages today and i went back and scroll back to most recent conversations with him and just to make sure. I always tell your kid. You'll love them. But you just wanna make sure you got that last one in you know and i did thank god but You know so hard. Because i was scrolling back so far i've alway back to father's and there's a message from him in there and My son is telling me how proud he is of me. Here's new idea. Last weekend mark schmidt's went to dover air force base when his sons remains and those of the other servicemembers killed were returned to the us he and jared's mother had a chance to meet with president. Biden there mark. Says he almost didn't go through with it. I just. I didn't have a lot of good thoughts about the man when president biden did me with mark and jared's mother. She pulled up a photo on her phone sent to them. By one of jared fellow marines and it was the last photo of our son taken that the morning of 'em we showed it to him and kinda stared at it and mumbled something. I couldn't really make out what he said. But as he's looking at a picture of my son. I just flat out said to jared jared schmitz ever forget that name and don't forget the name of the twelve others when you need to spend some time learning their stores who they were and then that's when he kind of described it as barking back. Because i don't know how else to really describe it. But he says i know their stores. I thought was. That's literally impossible. You know in. Why are you arguing with me. And then of course you mentioned his son again and i will. I will say fairness soon. As i got done speaking about that. And he said but he said he reached into his pocket and pulled out a card. And obviously this wasn't set up. Because this was immediately after what i said he pulls the car out and shows me number. Didn't know what the number met but after that number was plus thirteen and he explained to me that he keeps his card with them every day as a reminder of everyone has been lost. So there's that i'll give the guy kudos hem showing up and having to do what he had to do. Given the circumstances of.

"Afghanistan. Obviously but we gotta get into this fake team story. My god this is incredible and as a follow up. It gets even worse so a really a fake team at high school football team. That does not really. It's not a real team. Got a national televised game. And they got destroyed she. That's incredible got the background of that coming up next morning. Show this bill. Keep it here. Well it's almost rapid fire news time bottom of the hour care and we all join you in your newscast and we usually ruin it. But that's okay yes like drive over back up. Just keep on running over into the row word so in just hours president by going officially mark. The end of the america's longest war can address the nation. It's almost like you know what i feel like saying. Don't but you don't. They're not touting it as you know this failure in a in a loss there saying we got one hundred twenty thousand people out. Yeah how many americans. Oh this is a victory lap for him. You're trying they're crazy. I don't know whatever we see it ad nauseam but how insulting rude horrifying yes respectful. Let's see what we'll see. What happens when he addresses the nation. What times i've taken place up. I don't know how they haven't said they just today. He'll say eleven. He doesn't show up till two. I don't know depends. We'll see. I'll let you know it'll be live at are streaming live at our website. Fifty w. deal dot com. Thanks karen we'll see. It's seven thirty aggressive rapid fire at version of news news. Talk eight fifty w. f. t. l. selfless morning. Show this jan this diener. I'm bill and this was just speaking of the disrespectful part of it. I mean you talk about first of all you've already lost a child. A kid zonta daughter in afghanistan and he come home received the body of dover. And then you've got this guy checking his watch and talking about his own son when you have a private meeting with him. Not yours his. Yeah you know we had this conversation yesterday headed been one of your children who was killed in afghanistan and they were transferring the bodies at dover air force base and as a family or a family member. You had the opportunity to meet with the president united. i'd states. Would you go meet him. Considering his call is the reason your son or daughter came back in that box. And that's the nets the the difference there. It's not like it's horrible. It's ministrations faults in responsibility valid question. So last night on hannity he had to step separate goldstar fathers. One of them met with the president. The other refused it was interesting and and the one that refused said i. I just couldn't knowing that this man was responsible for my son's death. I just couldn't do it. Here's before even play these two because it's pretty rough to listen to just keep this in mind. How bad would the the meeting have gone for them to speak out like this. Because the last thing i want to do is talk about it again. Go on national. Tv two dads that just lost their kids. How bad would it have been that. They felt they needed the world to understand how badly this has been mangled and handled and even worse. The father that did meet with the president. How horrible was it for him then to watch the president did as the bodies are being taken off the transport plane. Right right exactly okay. So here's the first one mark schmidt's father yes i did. I say leaned into my son's mother's ear. And i said i swear to god if he checks his watch one more time and that was only probably four times in. I couldn't. I couldn't look at them anymore after that just considering especially the time why we were there. It was found to be the most disrespectful thing i've ever seen because we all ask the question right even way. We've posted the video quick little clear. I'm checking his watch. Well maybe just glanced once and it was. Oh no oh no. It wasn't just once. Here's another dad. Darren hoover it happened on every single. They would release the salud and he looked at his watch on every last all thirteen. He will watch. And i think was that guy darren. Who said wasn't either one that met with them now. A schmidt schmitz schmidt sm- schmidt said. The only reason he met with the president was he thought he owed it to his son to at least have some words with the president about how he felt like the father felt about what went on and he said the meeting did not go well at all. He said all the president talked about was beau biden. Said he didn't even offer you know like any consolation like any respect to the fact that you're the reason you just my son's dead. He said it was all about him. He he said he when he left he was so incensed. He didn't just sat there going. I can't believe this just happened. See they don't they don't care they they just don't anybody in this administration they just don't care about political points. I think it could be said now in. I believe one hundred percent. Mr smith story about that about biden is used to bowl biden as a political prop for years. Now yeah you're you're right up prop and you know what i don't know how anyone survives losing a child and and i understand there's a lot of grief but when you're meeting with families shoot just lost their kids because of what you gave as an order come on you gotta shows respect to these families. The other guy What's the other darren. Hoover said. I didn't want to be adding didn't want my family anywhere near the men. Wile said no. It wasn't wasn't going to happen. I was like okay. I you know what i betcha. There are many many military personnel today. Whether they were biden supporters are not no longer supporters. Oh yeah it's changed. Oh there's no doubt how can how can you support this. And now he's left these people behind. Yeah everybody knows okay. Remember the president. United states is the commander in chief. The generals listened to him not the other way around the final call. Suppose that's how it's supposed to work. I don't think that's happened in that way at all. Quick little update on louisiana many. How many states are sending Power kony twenty two states. I don't think florida's doing that quite yet. i think. I think they're all there. I don't know how many can get into the areas they've been sent to. Because you gotta wait till fema gives you the all clear You know it's funny because as you mentioned my my daughter's boyfriend usually goes and i said you know aren't you afraid about downed power lines. He said everyone always asked. That question said traditionally when a system is breached like that automatically shuts down the lines. Oh that's good and that's what's supposed to happen. He said but in catastrophic situations sometimes the signals get mixed and doesn't happen so fema goes in i. Can you imagine that crew. They're going to go on first to make sure everything's safe can't imagine now so they're just waiting for the okay to go in so That's going on there. And then on the lighter side of things with this happen. What a story. This part of the american tradition has looking forward.

"The father's a couple of fathers of two of the thirteen Us marines that were killed in that suicide bombing. Last week are really upset. Because well let me. Just get into the darren. Hoover father marine staff. Sergeant taylor who were told. Fox news sean. Hannity that president biden every time. A flag-draped coffin was removed from the hold of the air force. C seventeen during the ceremony at dover air force base on sunday president biden. Look down at his watch. After every coffin was removed. That's weird. He said they would release. The salutini looked at his watch on everyone mall thirteen. He looked at his watch. Nervous thing maybe. Oh absolutely. I mean you know. The president didn't wanna be there. You know that. Mark schmidt's whose twenty year old son marine lance corporal judgments died in the attack corroborated hoover stories. I actually leaned into my son's mother's ear. And i said i swear to god if he checks his watch one more time and that was only probably four times in yeah. He says i couldn't look at them anymore. After that just considering especially the time in why we were there. I found it to be the most disrespectful disrespectful thing i've ever seen now the schmitz family did have a meeting with the president before the ceremony. But he said that didn't go well he said He talked a bit more about his own son. Beau biden than he did my son and that didn't sit well with me. Probably said something like well you know. I lost a salad and ride hoover. Hoover wouldn't meet with president his family. He said we said absolutely not. We don't want to deal with him. We didn't want him anywhere near us. We as a family decided that was the way it was going to be and you can understand how he felt. Oh yeah you really can't blame them. I think maybe will with the passage passage of a little time. You know they might be able to see past. You know the the i. I wanna say politic say the politics but as more than politics because the question is whether this president is acting in a rational manner with regard to the way this all went down but on the other hand. You have to say These these men sons volunteered to join the marines and he knew that that was a dangerous job regardless of what happened to where they were sent. And it wasn't the president's fault that there was a suicide bomber. You might get past that point. But i started. I don't think. I don't think i would have done it any differently if i was there. But it was everything that led up to that point right. I wouldn't have wanted to meet him either. Said nope i'm gonna take a pass on that. Teddy officials discovered an additional fifteen terabytes of dallas police evidence and files from the city. Secretary's office were missing as that ongoing audit continues of data. That was deleted by mistake. This is this really crazy city. Also fired and information technology employee. Friday in connection with the lost evidence. Apparently they were trying to upgrade the system. Or you know. Transfer information from a storage cloud to a local server and during that whole transition process there was a permanent loss of what they thought was seven and a half terabytes of information back in april but now they say that was twenty two and a half point five terabytes of information so the officials say they aim to complete the audit. By september thirtieth. I'm sure what kind of crimes or how many cases may be involved. Said he also said as possible the audit will cover more missing evidence and we've already seen cases in which people charged with. They've been released from jail right. They don't have the evidence to back it up. Mcdonald's temporarily closing indoor dining at nearly all us locations early twenty twenty. They reopened them by last month. Appreciate the help i drink most of the coffee anyway but Caught not only is the cost going up but It's it's going to continue to go up apparently because in brazil the world's biggest grower they've had a lot of weather trouble i. They had a drought than they had a frost that killed a lot of the coffee trees and now bloomberg reports a serious supply problem because vietnam which apparently is the second new second biggest producer of coffee. Beans vietnam has imposed a strict lockdown on the exporting hub of ho chee min city formerly known better known as saigon as well as restrictions and key growing areas because a it and there's a shortage of shipping containers sky shipping rates related to the pandemic. My brother-in-law who's in the clothing business was talking about that the other day and how it used to cost. I forget what he was saying. Maybe five thousand dollars to ship products over in a shipping container. And now it's like thirty. It's like insane. These the the cost of the pandemic that we don't really take into consideration very often until you get hit with it personally and you start to realize like i've told you before i don't normally check the prices of anything in the grocery store. Just oh i do no. I'm not. I'm not a shopper. I'm a. I'm a hunter i go in and hunt the food that i want just begged me a piece of chicken. Got bag me some coffee and i'm outta here but it would jumps up in your face like seventeen dollars. Well you know what's happening now. I mean in the past starbucks and other companies. Like duncan and things like that didn't have to jack up the prices because they buy an advance. Yeah so they can hedge against some markets right but now that starting to catch up with them yeah this mentioned jam smucker which owns duncan and folger's They ought to just shut down their copy. Coffee operations altogether. That's the worst coffee in the world. Donkin dunkin alternate wrongful. Just horrible. i see. I grew up on dunkin. Well that's fine. That's i can't i can't. Those are two brands of iced coffee and has a weird sour taste description of dunkin coffee. I like it okay. Not all the time but sometimes..

"Who is one that you're looking at that like I haven't written about or talked about yet. That's a good question. How do you feel about the saint Bonaventure? LSU that came off my most looking forward to for sure. I kind of like LSU cuz I'm a little bit worried about Von he's being able to just like deal with their size and athleticism off but I also just don't want to bet we'll wait against Mark Schmidt like no disrespect will wave like we've seen this match up before and like it's not like well Wade was terrible in these games. But yeah, I am fuking genius and that worries me. Yes these incredible. I mean they just got time to prepare said like he's he's facing a socket smart assistant and last week he had to prepare for a Shaka smart assistant in Mike Rhodes and they were up double-digits like the entire second half. So, you know, the different towns levels between Vesey and LSU, but I I like the Bonnies there the coaching Edge. I think that top five for Bonaventure can compete. Athletically they're pretty darn good but right my biggest my biggest concern there is foul trouble. If big soon gets two fouls against Watford in the first five minutes. It might be might be real trouble in Paradise for the Bonnies. I mean, they play seven guys really like that's it. Yeah and the 7th one got in the game with like five minutes left. Like they basically went five or six guys in that eight. Ten title game. Yeah. No, I totally agree. It's kind of a weird weird dynamic compared to LSU where they go pretty deep. I don't know really like generally stay away from that game. Just cuz I think LSD was like very talented and they're coming in hot and you could tell me that like Darius days and trendon Watford get oshun sneak into foul trouble and this game is just kind of done if they do that. I think like, you know, that's that's a concern. Yeah. I don't know how Bonnie's light comes back from that if that happens Thursday. Yeah, cuz his backup is a nobody and it's just such a drop-off. So yeah, I will be co sign up for that if anybody likes live betting that would be a thing. I would look for potentially take LSU if he gets in foul trouble, you know wage. That's a really good call. How do you feel about Oral Roberts Ohio State? Like are you just kind of waiting like I am to see if Kyle young is going to play or not and then trying to figure out like is this the thing that we can actually do offer? Yeah. I'm probably if I you know on a side I lean towards all Robert's cuz just I think they can score against Ohio State's defense. That's mostly at though. I think there's points. I think there's a bonanza points. I took over at one of the early numbers. I mean, it's been done up three or four points. I still think it's a little low. It's one fifty-seven fifty-eight. I think I mean Ken, is it 162 and that's not the end-all be-all but there's no reason to think either of these teams is going to stop each other just as Ohio State's slow them down maybe but I think they're kind of willing willing participants in an up-and-down game if oral. Gets it going that way on. What level where do you think Max Atmos is among the great point guards in this NCAA tournament..

Mark Schmidt Max Atmos Ohio State Wade Mike Rhodes five six guys LSU Ken Thursday seven guys Robert five minutes Bonnie second half three 162 two fouls last week eight

"Yeah, those are probably my top two would be those two right now. And the other guy I think is a hell of a coach who again we talked about it early in this this broadcast name is Mark Schmidt at Saint Bonaventure. Yeah, hell of a coach hell of a mid-major coach should get the Boston College job. Honestly, he's in Alam. He should get it off. Um. All right. Listen, what about a little more? What about Mark poll? I like Mark Pho. I've said if Arizona fires Sean Miller, he should be in the mix of Zona. Absolutely. It's got energy. I mean there's how to get kids to play hard. He can connect with kids. He could teach big men like his big men have have really gotten better even dating back to like ye Vali. I saw him play a few years ago in Vegas with Utah Valley and I thought he he absolutely maximize his talent on that team. So I'm with you I think looks really good really good. And again, like if you want a coach I can go out there and you know play pick up and and and and jump in and do some things off. I don't know how many people seriously like like we should we should do that at some point obviously is and that should be an option to someone like Who's the who are the coaches right now that that you would pick still pick a Play Place a pick-up game? Yeah, like like cuz like Patrick Ewing's a little bit older like you'd say like elite-level. Yeah. I think that he would probably like physically not write his knees have got a pulled out her off your guys like Juwan Howard. Absolutely, right? It seems like yeah David Stevens would be one totally totally and we should do that. This song will do is I will make that a absolutely we can we can make fun and we can do the worst guys to on the other end the guys you pick the last of everybody. Everybody knows you what you could say painter dead. Then really piss them off. I've never seen him play pick up his feet his feet. I don't think he can fly. We need like old video of painter. We we need it. We need to play some old video of paying around a pod in the offseason. All right. Well, let's put it thanks to everybody for joining us on this special bracket edition of the Goodman and Homo podcast. We're going to try to do something else later this week. It might be Friday morning. It might be Thursday night. Before The Shot In The Arm

"So we have the magic potion. We have three vaccines that will probably be on the market soon and now now we have to put them in something. We are talking about special. Various dot. After tiny little glass vials. You can't just use any kind of glass for this. The glass reuse was invented in one thousand nine eleven. This is stuff on mark schmidt. He's in charge of global sales at a german company called shot. They are the biggest makers of fancy medical class. This class is super stable And ken with stent. A higher shock resistance. And this glass is called. Borough silica glass borough silica glass doesn't shatter in ultra low temperatures invisible. Glass particles don't make their way into the vaccine. When you use borough silica glass. This is the good stuff. There are like seven main ingredients. The biggest portion of ingredients is silicon is sent actually and then we have elements like born sodium potassium calcium magnesium the sand and all those minerals. Come from all over the world. Brazil india china europe australia south america africa. Some are more specific to one region. This borhan is material. I think seventy percent of the ballroom is coming from turkey. The little mineral looks like little rock's born everything gets shipped to one of five melting plants. Where all the dry ingredients get mixed together. We have huge mixers and you heat these tanks up to over one thousand degrees and melt the sense and melt the ingredients until you have a homogeneous liquid glass melts not like water but like more more like honey. This sand melting is happening around. The clock constantly is twenty four seven we produce three hundred and sixty five days that glass because you cannot hold the tank to stop once you have heated up the tank you go you turn off the heat. You have a tankful of hard glass so you don't turn it off and from that honey lake melted sand you then form long glass tubes that then get shipped to one of sixteen cutting plants in places like argentina mexico the us switzerland germany. Indonesia china this a lot of places and here. The glass tubes get cut into vials syringes and cartridges. So it's a huge long supply chain and you have to manage all these different touch points so that nothing goes wrong. Yup stefan says shot produces around eleven billion of the roughly fifty billion borough silicate glass containers made every year including billions of vials and basically as soon as cove exploded. So did the orders for more vials. Everybody's developing a vaccine that everybody thinks they're going to be successful so what they all did and which is certainly okay normal. They all have booked capacity to buy vials. Yeah everyone who wanted to get in the race for a covid nineteen vaccine. They put in their orders for vials months ago. But they all know they will only need vials if the vaccine is successful but they also know you're not even in the race if you don't have a container to put your vaccine in seven says this has created kind of overbooking problem there are only so many vials shot can make in a year but they say not everyone is going to need vials at the exact same time. So they're hoping they'll be able to trade orders. That shot can be like listen company. D you don't have a vaccine yet. This other company does can we may be. Give them your vile order just until your vaccine is ready. Here's another way. Pharmaceutical companies have tried to avoid vile bottlenecks. They're putting the covid vaccine in multiple dose vials instead of single-dose miles. They're putting five noses in one vial. Twenty those as in one vial now. You need fewer vials and chart expects to make around five hundred to six hundred million additional vials twenty twenty one enough to support about two billion vaccine doses. Each file carrying multiple doses. No it's not a big number and and it's it's it feels small it it it gives small but still it's still. It's a stretch because you have to be able you have to have that additional capacity and you have
