GM Reveals All-Electric Hummer

"Had been waiting for an all new all electric version of the Hummer designed for off road and on road use, and with acceleration that would have been impossible in a combustion engine version. We talked with GM President Mark Royce about where this new Hummer will fit in the marketplace. JMC is really the on ly premium truck brand out there. If you think about it. Most of their competitors are brand extensions for that, So we have GMC and we have homer. In a premium channel for trucks, and that's a very distinguishable piece of what we're doing with both brands you have the 84 84 acts and things like that for for GMC. I think you'll see that that grow. But then you have the Hummer. You know, the Hummer model under the GMC umbrella as well, which is sort of the ultimate off road piece of that so very carefully designed and executed with different attributes, different designs and different gotta market strategies. Mark you mentioned competitors. Let's talk about competitors in the E V space you have for now, with a 1 50 evey they've announced you've got, of course, Tesla with their pickup truck. How does this compare this Hummer evey year? The direct competitors against Are you going for a somewhat different market? I think it's like nothing else on believe it that this truck is is very different from What are competitors have described most recently with the peace of the light duty pickup truck, and then a few quite a few months back with What with the other electric only competitors is doing with their truck and I don't I don't really know until we see those come into the marketplace with those trucks are but I can tell you what this is, and this is Right now, Like nothing else. Talk about what may be a sister truck. The badger from Nikola GM obviously announced a fairly large arrangement with nickel a lot of controversy around it. Is the badger going forward. Do you see that? Is something complimentary to what you're doing? The Humber evey? Well, you know, we won't sell in market that truck That will be Nicholas. That's what Nick was doing. And the big difference there is that truck will will have a fuel cell. And so it's still a fuel cell electric truck but quite different or offering with our lt impacts on the pure electric Hummer so very different. But as far as you know, the badger and the nickel deal is going forward. Right now we're going forward and so exciting piece of this is Taking what is I believe the best fuel cell in the world with our fuel cell that is made in our joint venture with Honda right here in Michigan on DH, taking that fuel cell and looking at deploying it in the heavy duty transport market. With large trucks. You know, the class seven and eight and then also in the light duty badger truck that you mentioned. So, yes. So with the Hummer If you put this in the larger context of General Motors and its move into electric vehicles, you've announced the lyric the Cadillac lyric. Now they have the Hummer. Evey is understanding. There's a bold UV coming out as well. How does this fit into the overall portfolio that you're developing? And what comes next? It's a great question. If you look at the way we've designed the platforms, both on the A truck platform are BT Battery Electric truck platform and then are better electric vehicle platform. Those two dedicated platforms are quite different. Onda approach is quite different than many others that are in introducing electric vehicles. Reason why I say that is because again we're deploying our module or pack are multi M battery source out of our Lordstown plant in Ohio. That is Designed and executed to be high volume. And the reason why that's important again for the customer and for for the market is because we can really take because of scale. And chemistry that we've developed. In fact, right here we have a chemistry developing lab for ourselves and our packs right here at the Tech center in Warren, Michigan. That quick development of chemistry and then deploying that chemistry and our lt impacts is really the secret time driving that cost down so that we can offer Not only Hummers and Cadillacs, but Eve's and beyond for the mass market piece of our other brands that do higher volume and right in the heart of the market, like Chevrolet and Chevrolet crossovers, trucks, all of those vehicles and so this has been really, really done very carefully. And that goes also into the electric motors that we're doing ourselves. That was GM President Mark Royce on the All new Hummer evey coming out of thin next year for Bloomberg. First word news. We go

"Off celebrating his birthday. Our next guest got one of the best presence he ever could get. Just after his birthday, the The world's first super truck. In fact, General Motors revealing its first all electric pickup the 2022 GMC Hummer Evey Edition one Very special collector's edition. And, as I say, being called the world's first super truck and what a nice birthday present Mark Rice, General Motors of president on the other end of our line right now. Happy birthday, belatedly or again. And how about this for a president? Not bad. Not bad. You know, we we? Yeah. Thank you very much, by the way, and thanks for the call. Really, really appreciated the other day. And, Yeah, it's a weird word for running on a little bit of adrenaline here. We had a lot of really great announcement over the last few days. You know the factories and the reinvestment. To do all the wasn't out just just before the truck itself. So you know, way around. So they were going to build the lyric. You know that Cadillac Electric crossover that we unveiled the summer we built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, going outside invested about $2 billion on them. That includes some of the investment in our truck plant in Flint, and then lancing a cz well to build the Arcadia. A TTE Lansing Delta and and then finally, you know, we announce Factory zero, which is where the Hummer TV will be built. So that's another $2 billion investment and 100 throwing money around like crazy. I know. Well, this is you know, this is honestly this is the reinvention on the really the rebirth of General Motors for the for the foreseeable future, So it's It's big stuff and a lot of jobs and boy. It's just It feels pretty good. I gotta tell you Well, you know, you got to say these days. It's a blessing just to get through a reveal without a bunch of trouble and you did, and it's been embraced. And you're not the only one, calling it the super truck, the world's first Super truck. What's what besides being all electric and very, very modern looking? What's the most significant or the what are the most significant parts about this summer that you want to tell us about? S o that will want to go out and buy one. Yeah, You know, it does so many things well, but I gotta say some of the creativity in the design and the detail. There's some things that weren't really shown or talked about last night Like the Inside. Inside the truck car designers on engineers have actually put the sea of tranquility. Do you remember that? Yes, way have that. And there's a couple of little Easter eggs in the sea of tranquility if you look close And you know, the user interface is just something you know, we've never done seen before in the marketplace, so the screens and the interface is fantastic, has got something called crab mode, which you know we have four wheel steering on the truck, so the truck and actually go Bagnoli on DH, So it's really a really a fun kind of fun things. There's extract mode, which the truck has air suspension on it, so It can. It can raise and lower, like six inches, you know, in an off road manner so that you don't get stuck and you know it could drop to get into it and You know, it just goes on and on about the infinity roof. You can. You can take all the roof panels off and store them in the front of the vehicle because there's no engine in the front under that what was used to be called the trunk. We're not calling it the front. So if you can imagine pizza boxes, you can store all those in the front of the vehicle. You know, it goes on and on. It's just It's just, you know, creativity and engineering a very, very high level. And you know, I'm so excited because you know he caught it in the reveal, but You know, in the in the video, it just says made in Detroit, and that's that's pretty cool. So, yeah, so lots of exciting employees and everybody is just worked so hard. We did it very fast in less than 24 months. So if you think about that all new platform are multi, um batteries You should. We did talk to our listeners about that with some of your people on our special GM Day, a few Fridays ago, we talked about that. That really the lt, um batteries. The power from the lt, um drive. All of that is very, very new and very important to the future of General Motors. It is it is it absolutely. And it's all vertically integrated. What a fancy way of saying we're doing it all ourselves so That's really important all the electric drive unit, you know, there's there's ah to motor version and a three motor version in the remoter version is the one we're introducing first. What you couldn't. You couldn't if you could reserve it last night, but we're kind of we're kind of closed. Kind of over over. Did you trying to say you're trying to say you're sold you? You sold out of the collector's edition number one? Yeah, we kind of are And I feel bad because that was you to say I got a lot of you and you're not taking my money Mark, and I said, I'm I'm sorry, but we can, you know so problem Think the difference between you, Mark Royce in our old friend the late Sergio, who Upset with us at an auto show. I don't know where we were in Geneva or someplace and they were introducing a new Ferrari and they introduced it that day. But he said it was already sold out. But he didn't hesitate to say that. He said. It was a different T being introduced today, but he had a sense of pride. You have a sense of embarrassment. And I understand and appreciate both of you. On the way you approach this, whether this is really important to point out That all the Hummer's air, not 112,000. Whatever the figure is no out there. There are Hummers for less than 100,000. And if this Siri's won the collectible sells out, Trust me when I tell you There are plenty of fabulous Hummers by the way for less money backing this one up. That's right. Thank you for pointing that out. Yeah, the two the two motor version. We'll start under under $80,000 about, you know, so, but it's still you know, it is, uh, it's a super truck. So it is what it is, in terms of you know what capability is or for the value and priced and I think it's Hummer has always been in this one will continue to be. There's a fashion and design that's very modern in it if you've seen it, and you know, so it's it's you know, it's nothing less than that. So what's exciting from an outsider looking in? We've got General Motors president Mark Rice with us in the new Hummer e V that was revealed last night. We knew on electric Hummer was coming. I know you remember me asking you about a long time ago. Well, way have not really announced anything. And you were so good at what you do, and so we all knew it was coming. We did not know it would be the world's first super truck. We you over, delivered on this one mark and, of course. That's what you want to do. You have done it successfully. The hardworking men and women of the U. A. W. General Motors at all levels should be very proud because this ain't just a Hummer. If you know what I mean. Yeah, well, thanks, but it's not me. It's it's the whole team are our team and you did it on Sunday. I mean, you know our communications. People have worked so hard to put this together and it's hard you know, during.

"Us on any of our social channels, including Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Let's dive into some of the items that are making news this week. Gentlemen, GM North America has a new president Steve Carlisle. Who will also continue to oversee Cadillac, as well as G. M's three other North American vehicle brands on Star Delko GM Genuine parts as well, GM CEO Mary Barra stated quote Steve will help US scale the considerable transformation progress we've been making while at the same time preserving these sufficient autonomy necessary to maintain Four distinct vehicle brands. All that said, Guys, what does this native of Ontario Canada bring to the table He's been with GM since 1982. And, you know, we see this guy's come up through the ranks and women come up through the ranks in the automotive industry. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I would suggest probably good because he knows the machinations of GM, right? Yeah. I mean, he's been with GM forever and s O. He is infinitely, you know, endowed with G. M's development process, their sales process their dealer networking. He's got all of that in his, you know, quiver of arrows. So to speak, is he brings some guidance and leadership to GM North America, and he probably works really, really well with the existing bosses, Mary Barra. And Mark Royce. So it's probably a good thing if you're a GM loyalist, because it'll probably keep motors doing what they're doing. You're not going to see them going into strange new areas or new things. I remember there was a GM president that came came GM North America president that came in maybe almost Two decades ago and his he came from national on and he came from a product and branding focused background rather than a product. Focus, focus, background and kind of changed GM greatly and it hurt them on, so I don't think you're going to see a big shake up in the ship here, so to speak out, he keeps plugging along with its E Tron family of electric cars. There are the S and as sport back variants. Beyond that there are a number of other models that signal production. Tent. The Tron GT in the queue for each run. Now, at first blush, guys, I saw this car. I read the article. It looks like the E Tron Sport back. I kind of thought Tesla across over. It has some similarities. No, Jim, What do you think? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it's that's clearly the target and in terms of competition, But this this outta Q for each on is, I think it's a sharp looking car and I don't know if we're starting to get used to that crossover fastback. Look, when that first came out, you know, I was not a fan at all, especially on the BMW's when they first can. But they're starting to look, I don't know if they're just shaping him a little bit better, but I think this one looks pretty good. And if it comes in, I mean, they're saying it's targeted price of around some $45,000. That's definitely a competition to Tesla and some of the other electrics. I think right in line with what I anticipated with the Ford Maki as well, It's a good looking vehicle. It is And you know, I think a lot of people will be, of course, drawn in by the Audi badges. Well, that's always a good thing. When you're driving around the northern suburbs. We've said it before, and we'll say it again. Guys. The sedan, not dead. The 2021 Kia K five continues this year's trend of carmakers placing minimal premium on a brand new or heavily revised model. Carsdirect gotta look at an early order guide showing that Kia's new midsize sedan will start at about 23 5 before the destination charge. When you add that in, we were just about 24 a half, and I think the price of this key A K five will certainly be attractive to those in this segment. Mark. What do you think It's really interesting when you when you look at the value proposition that said the ends provide I mean, they really They undercut comparably sized crossovers by thousands of dollars in a lot of cases. Yeah, they may not offer all wheel drive. In this case, his vehicle probably will. But if people keep going towards thes crossovers and the prices keep creeping up, because that's where demand is and sedans just become more and more. Of a great value and a great opportunity for people to get a lot of vehicle and a lot of features for the money. And Corvette guys. It was a huge hit at this past year. Chicago auto Show. They've offered some updates for 2021. What are we looking at? Yeah, you've got you know they're keeping the price in the same, Which is the big story here. I mean, we're still coming in. What is it under just under 60,000 by about five bucks, But that was that was at 59 95 or 50 99 95. We're keeping. It just got a whole slew of ah kind of new colors and new ways to customize your Corvette. Now standard is wireless Apple Carplay Wireless Android Auto. You've got a ton of racing stripe packages. So they added more to the car without really upping the price, even though the demand I was so high that they sold out of the 1st 2020 models. I think everyone in their lives guys has either owned a Corolla or needs to own a Corolla. This is Toyota's iconic brand, of course. With the new Karol across coming online, But I'm wondering, Is this just a row of foreign Corolla clothing? You know what? I don't think so. I mean, yes, using the underpinning platform that a lot of Toyota vehicles are on, but I think really this if you go back way back in the day, Toyota offer vehicle called the Corolla all track, which was basically a wagon with all wheel drive a wagon version of the Kroll. I should say with all wheel drive, this is probably more like that, where it's really a Corolla. With just a more aggressive body on top, and then that SUV like shape that allows for a little bit more versatility on DH, then, of course, bringing.

So the team at the time, you know, we basically, you know, we got one off the show where it's like five grand over showroom, and it was at Sema that year. Like, you know, it was it was something that they wanted. They really wanted to do. And I was all about trying to do something different. And then you thought we insane. And then two thousand five we won the USA verse Japan, and that was just like. American driver, American car. You know, I was gonna ask you you. "Doing this show when I came here to KLIF in October of nineteen ninety-five that was the point. Because of the time KLIF was like number one in the market for males thirty-five fifty four which was a very key demographic. But that was the point of the car companies started coming to me. And wanting to put hype on the show, and I have nothing against somebody important, but I hate zero tear individuals say just want to get on the show because they want to hype something those of you listen to the show. I believe in one hype people that are really great at what they do in the car business, and the and that's not hype that becomes reality. Where I bring you the story about Jim Hackett, the Ford Motor Company and how he goes in front of Deutsche Bank and says nothing and thanks. It was a great speech and the analysts are going. What what? Yeah. I it's it's silly. I know and this actually all started right after I got KLIF because everybody thought it'd be a great idea if I did a radio show in Houston to not like this one this only three hours at the time. But in Houston, a really wanted and a lot of was driven by the Ellis family quick car because they have clicked Connors down there. So Rick sailor was her ad guy. And he got together. And he said there will be a one hour show and Rick had it on like I want to say six or seven radio stations in Houston. But it wasn't a live show was a show that I wrote put together. Added the adds to it and had Ryan run fifty nine minutes and fifty seconds. And it was still going out on reel to reel tape folks digital at that point, and it was taking longer to do that show. Taking longer to do that than actually prepared to three hour show here it didn't last long because I said look this too much work, and there's no pale, but it also delivered. My second interview to me I'd had Ralph Nader on the show before. And he was great. Ralph was wonderful. But Ford offered me Bob mall. I don't even know what Bob did the Ford Motor Company. It's been lost to the ages. They said this is the guy you want to talk to this guy is going to bring your audience up speed. So I do like this hour. I did an hour and a half interview with them thinking I would cut it down with enough time condense it get the best parts. Add the ads fifty nine minutes. Fifty seconds off to Houston for the week only when it came time to play it back and cut it down. I realized he had never said anything. He was Jim Hackett before Jim Hackett. I'm not making this up. I called him back. And I said we need to do this interview all over again because you didn't say anything, and I didn't realize until I was cutting it up, and it was like insane anything, in fact, one point I said 'cause he was talking about how hot Ford was going to be and I said, okay. How are you going to beat the competition? Any stop for a second. He goes. We'll just beat them. I've not making that up Grantham. And I still laugh about the Bob mole interview to this day, and the we'll just beat them line. It's been twenty years. It was that ridiculous. We did the interview the second time, and it was no better than the first. It was pretty much ever since. Then when car companies Email me, which I do every week. We'd like so. And so to come on the show and talk about this this this I started having the rule unless if they run the company, I'm not interest is my Bob mole rule unless they run the company. I'm not interested. Well, kind of worked because when Rick Wagner became president the GM Rick did his first interview on this show. Once you got the presidency is on the show. I said you should hire. Bob, Lutz, he said. Oh, Bob's already got a job and all that stuff. But guess what? He went are. Bob Lutz later. Now. Didn't he? In any case, it's hard to find friends of the top car companies because it's driven by hype. And I'm not really into that. They're great cars out there. They're incredible values out there. There are people take care people. They sell out there that to me is important, and I bring this up because we're gonna talk about and again, I'm an electric car owner. All right, seven years love it to death. When I get rid of it that car will be replaced by another electric car. But I still don't want to hear the hype on it. Okay. I don't want to hear that. And yet here comes Mark Royce, the newly enshrined president of General Motors this week talking about Cadillacs electric strategy. General Motors, quote, unquote strategy is to make their luxury Cadillac marquee. It's lead electric vehicle brand. It's quote, unquote, the automakers final op. Opportunity to turn the unit around. I'm sorry. I didn't know Cadillac needed turning around. Did you because I'm pretty sure I miss that. Oh, did I mention the Cadillac is doing as well as anybody in China? It's like Buick we sell three hundred thousand Buicks in America. They'd buy a million of them Buicks doing, okay. Mark Roy's, quote, unquote. We don't have any chances left with taking Cadillac to really new place. This is pretty much yet. This is the brand new president in the most unhappy story I've ever heard that literally tells Reuters we don't have any chances left with Cadillac taking Cadillac to really new place. This is pretty much it. Wow. That's stunning. And this is the president of General Motors. Suddenly, I wanna be hyped about something this is so brutally depressing. I'm thinking, okay. I'll take a little bit more hype than that. But in any case, this electric Cadillacs not coming out to what two thousand twenty two as somebody said, here's all the other electric cars are going to beat it to market is Cadillac gonna lead from behind. Come to think of it Cadillacs big deal coming up as a mid size SUV with three roses seats. So we already have the x t for the just came out. We've got the x t five which is the Rx replacement that son very well. And then we have this glade which kinda in a class by itself. Now, isn't it for luxury SUV? Yeah. Pretty much and suddenly an electric car is Cadillac's last chance really Royce did not elaborate on what would happen if the electric car failed. They talked about Johann deny moving to New York. Moving back to Detroit. What I tell you move into New York. What was that can do for the brand what did moving 0 out of Tokyo to Hong Kong due for 0? Dow was Johann donation deal too. However, I'm starting to lag Jim Lentz more with Toyota because jammed kinda comes out and says in a very nice way with the.

"And they're in the Champions League, and I just don't know if they have the depth, but axel Vissel scored an incredible bicycle kick in this game a deflection off the goalkeeper and you just his reaction was great. Then Mark Royce, the captain of the team scored its hundred disa- goal is the fourth goal of the game, and it was just a real testament because I felt like last season with Bruce Dortmund that didn't deal with versity very well. If they had gone down. A goal might have turned the two last year, but this year seems like they responded quite well and seemed to have that nice resiliency that I think is a hallmark of any team to other things touch on in in Germany. Number one. One in the Byron game, they ended up beating often hyme three to one, but Kingsley Komen picked up what seems to be a pretty serious ankle injury and he'll be out for quite a while. It sounds like which could be a problem for them. Then the other. The other big thing is VR which would play to play the part played a part in in the Byron game to a certain extent. There was a controversial penalty that they didn't use VR four for whatever reason if you have it, you might as well use it, I guess. But they decided not to use it. And a lot of the often Heim were pretty pissed off because it was a, it was a late one that was given to Byron Byron, basically salted the game away with it. They have VR was also used because players went into the box earliest. They redid the penalty. It just turned into a big to do, and it's one of the reasons I don't like the air. I'm not going to keep going off on this. I probably I'm going to keep going off on tangents on this, but like it's one of the, it's just it. It's not soccer when you start con- you know, it's basically everybody arguing about technology in on all the stoppages and everybody's fighting and arguing. It's just not soccer. I hate. That's just one element of air really. So. So I agree with you a certain extent. I wish they would make the win. They use it a lot more clear. You know, I think they need to iron that out. We're using it for these situations only, but but there is something about the human element of the game. The human air gives us all of our talking points right now all the VAR, and whether we're using this this technology or not. I guess it was just another just kind of evolution of this refereeing, but but yeah, I do have some traditional poll to wanna like, can we just keep it the same? You know. I guess I like the line. I got like technologies. Cool. I get the allure allure VR you know, it's basically in your in your mind, you have this, you know, flowery notion that VR is going to solve all these, you know, controversial calls when really they're not. It's just you're just gonna start that are subject Abon too subjective calls that are going to get argued about no matter what. So you're throwing in v. a. r. which basically kills flow of the game. And to get to nother one. We basically have the Wolfsberg Schulkin to ease Guay. VR was a Vero played a big role in the Wolfsberg Schulkin game. We should say, John Brooks scored a goal really early in this game. Let's go USA all the way. Hopefully he'll be on the squad in what a two weeks coming friendlies against Brazil and Mexico. Yeah, yeah. So we'll see him there, but VR played a big role in this. They they upgraded a yellow card that was given to shock. They upgraded red and then you got thrown out. And so he's gone. And then a red card was initially given to a wolf wrote player and then and then eventually downgraded because of AR to yellow, which is just all sorts of crazy in it led all sorts arguments in did not only did it leads to that. But at that point in the game, it was one one when the when the red card for volts per got rescinded to a yellow, so now votes gets to stay up a man. And have that advantage for another twenty minutes. And then they score the game winning a ninety, fourth minute to win it..

"We put it a posit onto Shakespeare, spinning rods, and his rod is in their rod and reel, and I've had more fun people bringing me things remember when you know and again the corvette deal. I love sixty seven corvettes and I've started collecting them legitimately in nineteen seventy seven, saw the. I sixty seven on the showroom floor and I thought, man, I I don't know how if I could ever Ford a car, this would be it and they were about forty five hundred dollars back then. And you know, so. Now, my first corvette, I got a thousand dollars for sold it to get my first dealership and I bought it back at twenty years later and didn't pay way I much more value and it heated back and is not as nice as it was when sold that's in there. Yeah. So you know, again, that serial number one cars and and and I think the the love affair had for corvette. The dream I had of ever owning a corvette has driven me to have the, you know, probably the the largest best corvette collection in the world, but started a long long time ago. I remember the day that I took possession of the, I c, seven corvette in the studio had General Motors, and I was so emotional because I could remember like yesterday walking into that Chevy dealer. Ship seeing that corvette and looking out on the lot saying Hannah world. Can anybody had this many cars to sail that's before found out full plan that you can finance. But know that experience of sitting of standing there having it will burn Mark Royce and all ships, General Motors brands role, the first zero number through the curtain and take pictures of me. I mean, to me, that was a kind of a Pentecostal moment for me in my life. Everybody has a dream. Everybody has something they want to do when they grow up. And for me, it's always been cars and racing automobiles racing to, you know, just an hour and a half ago. I was talking to my buddy that again, that we grew up together about a CSV Cadillac. I've got number two. I said this, let's get that out and play with a little bit. And I think we can get the horsepower up about a thousand horsepower and it was like, what are we going to do? It who drank can't drive it on the street. But you know, I've never. My wife says, when you gonna grow up, I said, well, you know getting old is kind of go happen. Grownups an options.
