The sharing economy has changed everything from how people get around a city to how they rent rooms while traveling. And now it's even seeping into a college. In California's Sacramento valley, farmers are temporarily leasing, flooded rice paddies to the nature conservancy, so the migratory shorebirds have a place to stop and feed while traveling the Pacific flyway, which is the major north south route that extends from Alaska to Patagonia. In the program, dubbed bird returns has been in development by the nature conservancy since 2014 and is helping conservationists deal with these short term needs of migrating birds. And because of urbanization, agriculture and climate change, the migrating birds have less access to wilderness to mate, feed, nest and rear their young. At the same time, the project gives farmers the opportunity to support conservation efforts. And maybe earn a little extra money without negatively impacting crop production. During February and March of 2014, the pilot season for the program, just 2% of Sacramento valleys, some 500,000 acres of rice fields. That's around 200,000 hectares, were turned into shallow water for shorebird habitat. Event season, the pop up wetlands supported more than a 180,000 birds, representing 57 different species. On average, the researchers found three times more bird diversity and 5 times greater density on rice paddies that participated in the program compared to unenrolled fields. Migrating animals like shorebirds are in jeopardy, as their ranges cover vast swathes of land. A study published in the journal science in 2015 reported that just 9% of over 1400 migratory bird species had access to protected areas for all the stages of their annual cycle. In California in particular, 90% of original wetland habitat has been lost to agriculture and urban development. Since the nature conservancy was founded in 1951, it's worked conserve habitat by working with landowners to purchase land or permanently limit the use of their land in order to maintain its wildness. Each agreement is worked out individually, a process that's expensive and can take months or years to develop. For the article this episode is based on, how stuff works spoke with Mark Reynolds, PhD, the lead scientist for the nature conservancies, California, migratory bird program. He explained that he and his colleagues, including sandy matsumoto, the team's project manager, and Eric holstein, the team's economist, thought that the demand for purchasing migrating bird habitat could bar exceed their resources. Quote, we were looking at our habitat needs and thinking, how do we buy our way to success? Sandy said, do we need to buy land for the whole year? It looks like the animals need it part of the time. Eric, with his background in economics, said we could do a reverse auction. I said a reverse what? A reverse auction overturns the conventional role of buyer and seller. Instead of buyers competing to outbid each other to obtain a good or service, a seller's compete to offer their goods or services to one buyer at a competitive price. And the sellers, in this case, are the owners of rice fields, which are typically farmed in California from April through August or May through October. During the growing seasons, the fields are normally flooded, but they're also flooded during the off seasons to decompose the rice double after harvest. A Reynolds and his colleagues saw an opportunity to work with the farmers to provide temporary wetland habitat for shorebirds passing through. So in early 2014, the nature conservancy issued an invitation to rice farmers to submit bids that itemized their costs to flood fields for four, 6 or 8 weeks at a time, beginning in February of that same year. The farmers set their own prices, and the nature conservancy was able to select the highest quality habitat for the lowest total cost. They repeated the process in the fall of 2014, and every year since then, a house stuff works also spoke with John Brennan, a partner at Brennan jewett and associates. A firm that manages rice sales for the Robin's rice company. He explained that the farmers are very receptive to this concept. Quote, to the extent that they can get their costs covered to do it, they're even more receptive because they see it as a, something that they're excited about and a way to make an environmental difference, and be something that really helps secure the longevity of the rice industry in California. To figure out where and when, shorebirds most needed wetland habitat for their migrations, Reynolds and his colleagues worked with experts at Cornell University's lab of ornithology, which collects information about birds through its citizen science project, E bird. And this online checklist allows bird enthusiasts across the country to tabulate the kinds of birds they see when they see them how many and where. Using data from E bird and grant money from NASA, the Cornell team built high powered computer models that predicted at weekly intervals, the presence and abundance of birds at different locations. From these models, Reynolds and his colleagues created maps to visualize and prioritize where and when habitat was needed most. But once they knew the locations, they requested bids from the local rice farmers. They adjust the program based on weather conditions during times of drought, the nature conservancy would pay more, and during times of excessive rain, it would pay less. When they extrapolated the potential costs for the project out, and they found the highest possible cost per year based on the average bid, was $1.4 million. But that's significantly higher than what the nature conservancy actually paid. Meanwhile, the estimated cost to restore rice fields to wetland habitats equal to that land area. Would cost around $25 million and maintenance fees would come in at about a $100,000 a year.

"Basing all this on is Soto Machado and Josh bell hitting one, two, three, four, with others, including Jake cronin worth following. But if tatis comes back and he can't play shortstop, or they have to put him in center field or most important, he doesn't hit, then the whole equation changes again. And I agree with you, I think the potters make the playoffs. I think it does take some time. I think soda will settle in and they'll start to score runs. That kid is so impressive. You know, he's 23 years old and I can call him a kid because I'm a lot older than that Tim, but just being around him over the weekend before we had Dodgers and Padres and then being reminded of his approach at the plate when he played that night and to hear the backstory is on sort of how he's ingratiated himself with the team, initially they put him in the two hole, then he moved to the three hole and then Josh bell basically talked to him and said, look, you know, this lineup will be better. You'll get more protection if you hitting the two hole. And so that's where he is. I love listening to him on the mic, tell me about Juan Soto through your eyes as someone had been around players for a lot of years. Well, again, I live in the D.C. area, so I used to go to the nationals games all the time and I was always just amazed at how mature he was at 19 years old playing in the big leagues. Mark Reynolds, one of our favorite people, once looked at me and this is for four years ago and he goes, I can't believe the plate discipline this guy has at 19. He goes, I've never won for one day. Had that kind of plate discipline in my life. And I'm 34 years old. He said, this guy's 19, he said, I've never seen a kid who understands and commands the strike zone like he does at this age, and of course he's still got it. Buster he's walked 469 times in his career and he's 23 years old. The key will be, of course, does he expand that strike zone just a tiny bit once in a while if he needs to drive in a run knowing there are all sorts of good hitters in this lineup. I think he's going to get more pitches to hit and I think he's going to be an even better offensive player than he asked at this point and that is really saying something. All right, how about the Orioles that win the first game of that series against the Toronto Blue Jays? Just keep rolling. They trade training. They trade their closer. They keep on rolling. It's an amazing story. I'm going there tonight just to see what the heck is going on here and how they can be doing this. But just look at the guys who hit Homer's last night. I mean, they had three guys, I think a bunch of guys with ten or more homers. They don't have those spectacular offensive players, but they find a way to score runs. Felix Batista closed last night because Jorge Lopez is gone. They're starting pitching. Their ERA in the month of August buster. I know we've just started the month is right around two. This was a team with historically bad pitching last year. And now it's pretty darn good. So the story is tremendous and Brandon high deserves a lot of credit. He took a lot of losses, his one loss record looks horrendous and they're staying with him because when they get good, he deserves to be there. And right now they're pretty good. Yeah, and I love it for him. The fact that he's there is they turn the corner and they're having success because he earned that. I mean, he absolutely weathered some lean years there. That's a great story, a not great story over the weekend. "It's Mark Reynolds, it's Adam Dunn. It's Davis, it's yuan Mankato. It's Joey Gallo, Chris Carter, Stanton, judge, et cetera. It's all players from this era. But Reggie Jackson still standing alone there and no one really challenging him, which you would think is odd because he would think, well, maybe players are having better conditioning, maybe they're having more longevity, and then there's just so many more strikeouts in the game now that you would think someone would be making run at this thing, if not having already shouldered Reggie aside. Yeah, it is kind of remarkable. I mean, the guys who have been around long enough to sort of be within range from a longevity perspective, right? The pool holes is you're right that there is for him specifically he was not much of a strikeout guy and then you can imagine a shift in the profile that would be tolerated over time, right? So like the guys who are posting big strikeout rates, but are still productive and whose production we are perhaps able to better appreciate because of advanced stats, like maybe those guys are just far enough away, that's a weird way of describing that. They're sort of early enough in their careers that they aren't threatening yet. Right? Does that make sense? But it is surprising that it would be so secure that it would feel so doubled relative to when Reggie was playing. So it's odd. I mean, it's not easy to be an extreme strikeout machine and still play for a really long time. So he was an outlier in that respect, but even so you would think that it would have overcome it with pitchers, for instance, you might be surprised that say no one has struck out 21 in a game yet, but of course you have pictures not going as deep into games. So there's a change in picture usage there that counterbalances the increase in strikeout rate, whereas with hitters, you don't get that as much. I mean, maybe there are a few more rest days here and there in teams being more conscious of that. But there's also, I guess, not more games relative to when Reggie was playing necessarily, but to earlier eras, so that's something too. So it's odd. I mean, I guess maybe trout could potentially get there. If he stays good for a really long time, he's like in a 150th place and he just is like a hair more than halfway to Reggie at this point. So it's possible if he were to play for ten more years and maybe strike out more as time went on, but you wouldn't say that any individual player like I think the odds are pretty decent that someone who's active right now would take over that top spot. But it's hard to point to a presumptive person who will definitely do that. Yeah, it's a strange, it's a strange thing. I just like how I know we've talked a lot about the sort of era of baseball that we're in where it's like this sort of tasteless stretch that we seem to be in. Did you know how long Robbie Grossman's streak was working? No. Yeah, it was like he had an error. And that's the only reason I knew about it. It was like a lot of games played without an error. And anyway, I was just thinking about how audit is that we don't have more of those. We've talked a lot about it. So I remain on the hunt. I remain on the hunt for a chase, right? You want to sweat your judge needs to keep on keeping. Because you want to have the fever. You know, we need something to talk about in September. Tomi was close, tomi got within 50 ks of Reggie, and Adam Dunn would have blown him away if he had had the same length career. He retired too soon, but he was just a little more than 200 behind Reggie and he didn't play after his age 34 season. So he was the one you might have banked down, but I guess he had old player skills as a young player and not enough skills as an old player. So it's tough. I think it will be broken at some point, unlike a lot of baseball records that it's hard to imagine how they could be broken without some radical change in the game, but I think this one will get broken. It's surprising that it hasn't happened already. Yeah, it's just surprising. Maybe Gallo, I don't know if gala will have. This is the thing. Like, you know, some of those guys seemed like they had, they had either curtailed the strikeout tendency enough to prolong their careers or like the other stuff they were doing was so superlative and had sort of stabilized such that we were going to see them play for a really long time, but like Callum hasn't been good for like a year now. Right, I know. Yeah, he actually has fewer than a thousand career strikeouts. I know. How is that true? It seems like he's had a thousand this season, but 977 straight cuts with gala you're always surprised that he has so few of things unless they're home runs. It's like wet, he only has that many sac flies or he has that many singles. He's just so extreme. But you think that he would have even more, but I guess he hasn't played that much. He's had fewer than 3000 career plate appearances. So yeah, trout's a better bet to do it than he is by far I think. Right. And so it's just, I get why it is, it is a trickier needle to thread than you might expect it to be, right? But it is surprising that it is. It's still a surprisingly tricky needle to thread. You know, who are you? Let's see. So like since 2012, yeah, it's like Christy's doesn't play baseball anymore. Called Goldschmidt. 1428 Upton crews had a bunch right, but Upton's pretty close to done. Cruz is probably pretty close to dun Stanton. Like, okay, Harper, trout, Martinez, I didn't do those quite an order, but you know, like, man, Christie has had a lot of strikeouts. Yes, you did. Chris he was triggered, Ben, did you know how much Chris it was struck up? I knew it in an intellectual way, but not in a specific way, you know? If that makes sense. Struck out a tad too much. Yeah, it might be, it might have been too much, you know? It might have just been too much. And like, of course, you know, that's just looking at the raw strikeout.

"Fine bomb Joe podcast. Seems like just yesterday. It was actually 1966 that spurrier was winning the Heisman Trophy for the university of Florida. What does a man do on his 77th birthday? Probably works at his restaurant. Handsome Joe. That's a long way off for you. You're still a young man. How are you? And you know what? I really don't care what state Thursday doing. Because you know, you know, you know, as well as I do he has never lacked Alabama. No. He never has. And ever since that game, I now know you remember it's been a few years that he said how much they would be and they actually did it. Oh yeah. He said about 30 points and they won by 31. Rhett, right. So, you know, I gave him credit, Jared, but you know, you ain't always on top of the mountain. But am I here? Am I saying things? I'm saying this tweet that dire will say if he looked like what Kevin Costner or something nothing. He did. Well, you can play look at my picture. It's kind of a crowd between Elvis Presley and Mark Reynolds. I mean, I'm the most famous dude out there, Paul. And Paul I'll tell you this, if you ever went home yet, would you? You'd be hanging out in nerds, little. I mean, it would be nerds be they would be. You say play it. Yeah, you'd be playing Yahtzee and who know or something like that here in gym, talk about how good he might not feel. I mean, he just been to nerds, I've been a couple of nerds there before. And I left as quick as I could. Okay. I would imagine in red bay Alabama up there in the northwest corner of the state. Nerds ville doesn't play well, does it? Oh, no, no, no. Now we're standing across the state line over the missing. Now the nerd thing in Alabama, not in this part of the country. Now, you go down to Lake county. There's a bunch of nerds down there. I mean, for those of you who don't know, Lee county is the county where auburn university is located. Kicking crap. You know what? I mean, but anyway, Paul, I am glad that I'm a man whether that is storm and his patriot looks like a rockstar right now. I mean, he was a stone. And it just took a couple weeks, but they don't want some bad man. Did you make it out of gyms returned to the show? Well, Paul, I could just keep myself in the nails listening to Jim. I mean, I would just do that. I mean, I can't find a way. I mean, I know there are a lot of off color jokes to make, but is it, can you kick yourself in the nets? Yeah, I guess, hold on. You can. What's that? By the way, I'm not just a word to the wise, don't try that at home. Yeah, I mean, tonight, I guess my try every day. You got a straight child, I guess. But, you know, when I do is just sit on. It's easy to figure out. You don't have to be, you don't have to be a rocket scientist, as they say in north Alabama to figure that one out. No, you just said, is that what they used to call, you know, your legs crossed kind of. You sit on your legs. And then you just take you put and just have an upbeat. Yeah. Yeah, I don't think we need to demonstration, but thanks for giving us one. So handsome jokes in the middle of the week. What have you been doing so far? Well, Paul, spent the day trying to get a spark plug for my daddy's weedy. And I can't believe how hard it is to find the sport flow for a weedy. And did you go to AutoZone? I did. And I went to Napa. Napa. I want to throw Riley's and they had fort floats for cars, but they didn't have none but once they have great wine out there, they won't involve Mississippi that's got a hot dog and chicken works there too. You know, not that you care, but you know, if you ever been there, you know, go to nap and folks. And you know, that's what's up, but anyway, I ain't really done nothing today, Paul. Okay, well, listen, Joe, I hate to run after such a great, meaningful substantive call, but we do. We have another hour to go Stewart Mandela among the guests in the final hour. It's been a busy show. We're coming right back..

"Dante has a line in the nine poverty. Beauty awakened the soul to act. And i think he's exactly right. We need examples of compelling of lifting the light that draw us toward So many good things that we leave side of the world and so it's exciting for me to To see this as an exercise in public humanity thick and make a constructive difference precisely at this moment in our history. Now in the past on this show with professor david allen wider and the hillsdale dialogues or with our mutual friend. John mark reynolds. I've tried to do a little dante here and dante there but it is so massive an undertaking. It's just glancing blow so matt anderson. How're you how are you organizing this. So it doesn't intimidate. You just said three days a week which is great. So someone doesn't have to you that people can catch up. That's great as well but how you organize it so they can just listened to seven to eleven minutes a day. Get it yeah. I mean they're going to get a glimpse of it right. They're going to get a little bit of and you're right. It is very confusing. Dante has always these sort of treatises on florentine politics. And who are the guelleh. Believe you've got to kind of keep a flash card around to figure out. Which side was witch by dante was on that can be overwhelming. But if you can sort of just set that aside in one way reads the tax and then counter as a literary device. I mean the thing about reading taxes getting from it what you can get from it not what you should and so we wanna take people say from zero to you. Twenty-five percent and their understanding in hopes of moving them to to read a few more books and go on their own from twenty five percent fifty percent. So you know we've got a great set of questions that we providing with each one if you sign up by email or if you go to the website every monday wednesday friday we have just phenomenal study questions that are written by guiding matt loser at the pacific class university and those are messy facilitate deeper inquiry into the tax and really one of our hope that people would read this together in groups through their churches or groups of friends referred from a lot of people who have formed little book groups around that and that's also another way to drive them deeper so you know in seventy seven minutes. You're not going to get everything out of the text that you could get. That's what makes it a great tax That you can keep going back to over the course of a lifetime and always learn something new from that and so we really want to wet people's appetite and to help them see the way in which this tax actually has a more more spiritual significance for them so that they are moved to to defend their love for god the left for their neighbor and there are lots of the world around dean henry. There isn't a small group in the country. That's a little christian vernacular people meeting small groups monthly kind all over the united states sometimes are married couples..

"What's the record for most miss sweeps in a season period so including teams that did eventually ernest weep at some point. 'cause i was guessing that the pirates already held the record for most miss weeks before the first successful sweep in a season and ryan confirmed that the record for most outright missed sweeps since nineteen hundred is nineteen by the nineteen thirty philadelphia athletics and he confirmed that since one thousand nine hundred the record for most miss sweeps to start a season was eleven by the nineteen thirty nine pirates again. It's the pirates kind of a consistent theme here but yeah the pirates just a looking at their schedule for the rest of this season and seeing what their chances of A sweep are doesn't look great for them. They are playing the marlins right now. That's their best chance so if they could sweep the marlins then they could get off the schneider here after that they play the reds for three games than they play the phillies four games. It would be even tougher to sweep before game serious. And then they have the cubs again for three and then they finish this season against the reds so their best chances really come against the marlins this weekend and against the cubs in the last season of september. But they've already made history they could make even more history if a stay sleepless for the rest of the season. I'm so impressed by how many times you managed to say. Sweeps eating goof it up even one time ben. Yeah that's your proof house we it is to call back to some old effectively weld episodes in. Yeah this is not something i ever would have noticed. I guess it's frustrating to be poised on the precipice of sweep so many times and not to seal the deal. So that sucks. I had The lavar voice. Joke and song. That i told you off air second my head for lakes now. Our listeners did not hear it. You wanna share it with them. They he should record a cover of the eagles and sing it. You can go lavarnway. Yeah i not had that stuck in my head. Fortunately for days and days and days. Oh no yeah all right well. Good step blasts good questions. Good research. Thanks to everyone involved as always understood. Shout out a little extra fun factor. That i was hip to buy twitter and listener aiden jackson evans who tweeted prior to friday's game. That joey gallo needs one homer and twenty one more strikeouts in the next fifteen games to achieve a full nelson and what he is calling. The full nelson is more home. Runs and strike outs in a single season than nellie fox had in his entire nineteen season career so now fox Former white sox second baseman hall of famer sort of the metrical of his day. He had thirty five home runs and two hundred sixteen strikeouts in his entire career because he never really struck out and he didn't have a ton of power. Joey gallo entered friday's game with thirty five home runs and one hundred ninety six strikeout. So almost the full nelson and he has since homered in friday's game so he has surpassed smelly fox's career run total this season and he is well on his way to surpassing his career. Strikeout total and i just ran a quick stat head query to see who else had the full nelson in the past this players who've had thirty five or more homers and two hundred sixteen or more strikeouts in a single season. It's mark reynolds in two thousand nine. Adam done in two thousand twelve and chris davis in two thousand sixteen and i would guess that gallo will be the fourth sometime soon. The only player who has had the strikeouts but not the homers the half nelson is yoan moncada in two thousand eighteen cool. Yeah that's a sign of how things have changed to in also just How much of a contact. Outlier now fox was even in his day. But yeah that's doing for you constantly breaking the scale all right so that will do it for this week. Thanks as always for listening. Well eat your heart out. Howard empty your ninety nine year old record for the most hit by pitches in a single season has been broken on friday night after we finished recording padres reliever austin adams issued his twenty fourth hit by pitch of the season he has pitched only forty nine and two thirds innings the recipient of number twenty four was cardinals catcher yet ear. Molina looked like the pitch him on. The back of the arm. Adams really seems mad at himself every time it happens. He shouts looks down at his hand. As if to say how could you be paying me like this at this point. He can't be that surprised. Max bay on twitter did some analysis of his pitches locations and he found that earlier in the season maybe adams was getting a bit unlucky with how often his pitches were hitting people but that lately his expected hit by pitch rate has spiked to the point that on average would be expected to hit about six batters per hundred pitches just based on where his pitches have been. And this one was pretty unavoidable. It wasn't eighty seven mile per hour. Slider and molina was fine. Padres manager. jason. Taylor said i get the narrative. He gets the narrative. They're all sliders. This guy's not hunting. This guy's not throwing ninety five mile per hour fast balls and hitting guys. Yeah that's true but even so it just doesn't seem like he knows where his pitches are going. It's gotta be tough to bring a guy in there's like a near certainty at this point that he's going to hit someone course. It's also tough to bring a guy in when there's a good chance that he's going to give up runs and he's been doing that a lot lately and he did that in this game. Play log was doubled left. Strike out swinging walk. Wild pitch hit by pitch then adams was replaced by rusted. Who allowed a grand slam to dylan carlson. And that made. What was a four to cardinals. Lead in eight to cardinals lead. And that's where it ended up. So shockingly the vince. Velazquez austin adams. Ross detweiler pitching plan. Did not pay off adams over his last seven appearances has hit seven batters and perhaps more importantly to the padres is allowed. Ten earned runs so you may not be seeing him in a lot of high leverage situations but he has already made history to cap off one of the weirdest seasons of all.

"It was great. I did a back and forth bristol. Yesterday drove there at four in the morning Got their ten took a nap on a couch inside of the espn offices. I did baseball tonight. Six seven got the car drove home. That home at two o'clock and now i'm up talking to you. So i'm not looking too good right now. Buster but then again. I never am looking too good. Now let me ask you this. Is there some rule that you employer able to shut a door. So no one gets a of you while you're sleeping on the couch for with your mouth agape 'cause i gotta tell you one time i did a cross country flight and our old friend andy. Rice wall producer on sunday night. Baseball as i fell asleep and my mouth was open. He took a picture of it and sent it to me and it was. I felt so violated. Yeah well fortunately on a sunday. A colbrad sunday at espn. There was no one in what's called the living room there which i had no idea even existed. I was so tired. And i knew i would be up all night that i felt i had to take a nap and i wonder if there's a couch and i found one for half an hour. I fell asleep and pleased. Nobody come in here. While i'm sleeping with drool coming out of my mouth. So i slept for a half. An hour revived me and make me through to two o'clock in the morning. Oh my god you just reminded me of a horrific story from high school. Which i'm not gonna relate here on the podcast all right so i wrote a story about the forthcoming war on foreign substances. In major league baseball. It might start as soon as a week from today tim. The impact is going to be enormous. Let's run through some details. Okay sure right. So from what i understand. On friday. there was a conference call with baseball officials including folks from the union. Folks were major league. baseball They are finalizing the rules around. What's going to happen with the push against foreign substances a memos going to go to team sometime in the week ahead and then at that point the umpires will be instructed to enforce a rule. That's already on the books and that might happen as soon as a week from today. You know at the outside maybe within two weeks here are some of the details. There are going from what i understand. The checks on pitchers are going to be random and repeated think of as one source said to me like a dui checkpoint. They are going to be checking players repeatedly during the game. Maybe eight to ten total per game each starting pitcher. Perhaps being checked a couple of times and part of how that's going to happen. Tim is because of their key. The cognizant of not wanting to slow down gains. Some of those are going to happen as pitchers walk off amount. So let's say the starting pitcher finishes the second inning. The you know the the the television goes to commercial. And you're gonna see empire step forward. Intercept the pitcher and say. Show me your glove. Show me your hat. Show me your belt and you know if if need be they would follow the pitcher down into the dugout and say you need to. You know to show me this position. Players may also be checked from what i understand that might involve a warning so if a in empire seized catcher with pine tar on shin guard sees a catcher with pine tar on his glove seized third baseman with pine tar. Some other substance on his belt. He'll say to him. Clean it up and there are a couple of really really interesting elements of this time. And there's so many layers to this conversation but from what i understand. A lot of the information has been gathered by major league. Baseball has been players turning in other players. Sending in video of. How some pitchers are you using foreign substances and on top of that major league baseball has essentially compiled what you could refer to as a scouting report on how pitchers throughout the sport are using foreign substances. And it's very specific information that will be given to umpires at the outset of each series and so the umpires will know that. Tim curtin right hander. For the seattle pilots His foreign substances on his belt on his left side. Or he's got pelican grip on that long string that hangs off his glove and he goes to that they're going to have that information going into each series if a pitcher is determined any players determined to have violated the foreign substance rules. What they're talking about. And this is not been. Formalized is ten game suspension without pay. Which is a big deal as you know jeff. Passan was on baseball tonight last night and he had had compensated pitchers about how they intend. Maybe to try to skirt around the roles. I gotta tell you. Based on what i heard over the weekend. I think this is going to be an aggressive war. And it's going to shock people at the impact that it's going to have because how often players are checked. I think it's gonna. I think you're gonna see a lot of behaviors change on buster i. I didn't pitch for the seattle pilots pitcher. The boston braves there was way before the pilots There is so much to go over here. Buster but the number one thing is it's going to be very difficult to enforce this and yet they are going to try. Let's not forget during the steroid era or during the drug testing era. Which is still here. Showalter told me once mark reynolds came off the field with the orioles once and after a game and before he could even leave the dugout there was tester. They're saying you need need a pee in a cup right now right now before you get to the clubhouse just to make sure we're also had nothing to do with mark rouse. The point is we have had these testing done before for other reasons. And now we're going to have it for foreign substances on baseball players. Couple things first off the empire's got their hands full to begin with and now we're gonna ask them to do way more. But i'm in favor of trying this because the hitter is that i've talked to and i've told you this buster. They thinks something really fishy is going on here. You know ted. Simmons told me the great hall of fame. Catcher told me twenty years ago no pitch has ever been invented that i've never seen before i can catch any pitch because no pitches ever been invented that i've never seen and yet kevin sites are the hitting coach for the braves told me this year that that hitters are coming back to the bench saying i've never seen that pitch before i've never seen a slider move like that..

And so know. We came back all happy and everything. And all whenever ten fifteen days later I'm on my way to the airport to meet earnings their family our family. Let's stop by the old church. The hope chapel. Hermosa beach deceived by mail newsletter. From this this church and different people than the ones we had Active and they said basically. Don't come here in basically set it clearly that. We don't need your kind of christians in hawaii and so so then we get the airport and the kind of nicely happen but was kind of weird. We're we're all on. The airplane have overbooked and members standing around and inside can had long kind of bit. So i don't see. Don't take the seat in those days I don't think they had a signed receipt. And so we just left standing all all you know only only so. I got two kids. He's got two kids times. There's eight of us the us off the plane for twenty four hours. We all got a free round trip ticket back to the mainland. Which was really good kind of scared going. And it's like a nice thing to have in your back pocket. Then we land the next day and there's a hurricane watch and i just can't go worse and and we have no place to meet and and so that was kind of my memories of getting air. We we'd been on the radio for a while. Just we thought we'd in the radio wants removed. They're just kind. you know. Get some kind of momentum going and the greatest kind of off and so we started getting phone calls to you know we had we advertised church. Phone number was my house and so the end of the radio broadcast said you're interested. Promised to love you. As is this number. All ring at my house. Church was on the beach and it was against the law. So it's crazy days erin As you guys started started to kind of walk this this new church plant out. What do you remember recall about. Maybe some things you were learning as a new leader ought working alongside ralph some of those things that you learned that are fundamental to Beginning new work. Oh that's a. that's a tough one. What i was. I i started learning early on was that there were there. Were two distinct roles and one of those roles. I was not made for toward. Did i ever wanna be the man standing in front of everybody talking. Therefore that left be with being a servant to that guy and i remember sitting in telling him one time that look. You can do whatever you want. But if you cross any lines and i'm outta here you know like if you go off into left feel i'm gonna. I'm going to leave. Now there'd be times he you'd be right on the edge in some even put his foot on the other side of it and then because at this point we're a part of denomination that has sort of strict rules.

"But there's also sacrifices on a regular basis mandated sacrifices and that's not including the free will offerings that the jews were encouraged to give just as a baseline. The jews gave to god in one form or fashion or another thirty to forty percent so to to take a round number like ten percent and just to fix it to the offering is a really big problem now. We ran into an interesting problem in college because we were broke. We were poor. There was no income right. There was no no no more money coming in. We had we. Neither of us had a job and save some money to get through the first couple of months and it was interesting that around that time. Mark reynolds great preacher. He was preaching a lesson on giving and he talked about maybe a baseline that we should consider as ten percent and so afterwards we walked up tomorrow. And we're like what do we do. We have zero income. What's ten percent of zero now. I don't have to be a math whiz to know that that's zero and so two two draw on ten percent might be a good baseline for some people or a good way of thinking about it but it really misses the point. And that's really what. I wanna get out this evening. It really misses the point when we set on ten percent. And you have been in the world. You've been with people of the world and even religious people and i use that term loosely. In the way. That paul used it of the people who were at mars hill for instance. They're very religious. Just not in the right direction. But there's a lot of religious people a lot of people who consider themselves christians and they will literally equate tithing to the offering. Will i tie tells you to do when he tells you to. Do is offering a different way. And so when we're talking about offering it's important to understand that the offering is separate and apart from the lord's supper it is also separate and apart from tithing they are not the same..

For Debra Mark just for me. Yes. This is the story of a Daycare center up in San Jose. It's like a pre school. And there is a man by the name of Jorge Robles, who apparently has broken into the place. Three times. Back on January, 27th at this play and learn preschool security footage showed him breaking into the school through an unlocked door. He stole $1800 worth of computers. IPad Minis Other electronics six. It's a pretty good It's an upscale preschool business. They got computers and iPad Mini. Is that the kind of ipads for the preschoolers? Yes, yes, they do. He returned three days later. Where he stole more items. But thieves story got a lot more attention because Oh, He stabbed the pet tortoise with a big wooden stick. Oh, no. You know that is so upsetting. I saw a picture. Of the stab toward us. Yes. Yes. And that really put the knife sticking out of it. No. I saw the tortoise with bandages. And that is horrendous. You know, tortoises, you know, First of all, how do they defend themselves? They cannot. They can barely move there. So so right. This was not a guard creatures. Let me write that down. I thought he was their security. Okay? Yes, it's from the obvious desk, but still, it just makes me really, really sad. Yeah, He took a wooden stick and impaled 65 pet tortoise. Michelangelo over. This was a huge thing, huh? 65 £65.1 of those large right through the shell. Ah! Yeah, She's right about the advantages of practical cracked his shell penalty. Well, that does that grow back. What can you do about superglue? E? Don't know. Does it grow back? Or look says quick actions by a doctor. They performed emergency acts of relief. It doesn't say what they did. I'm look at the picture she's talking about. It's just a bunch of bandages on the shell of the too many times, there's a there's a tortoise gets stabbed. I mean, how did you even know what to do? Exactly. You see, this guy just took a wooden stake and drove it right through the back of my guy Health clinic and a gang neighborhood. We have stabbed guys come in and all day the tortoise that what That is so mean. They catch him. Okay? Yeah. And by the way, the tortoise is expected to survive. But it was serious injuries. So a cop files a request. To review the bail because he's eligible under emergency covert rules for immediate relief. So and he was released. And guess what? He went back to the pre school and broken again. This time he took apple ipads and groceries. Oh, my God! What a sick sick! Ah! $1000! Maura, What time was this? San Jose? Is this? Not a six state. Look now he's behind bars without bail. Oh, now he is. I would feed him to the tortoise. Yeah, that's a great idea. Grind them up and feed him. Oh, my God, really? He ought to get executed. Yeah. Did they let him go? They don't think that he's a violent psycho could harm the kids. If you're willing to stab a tortoise in his shell. You can't avoid enoughto Hold them under the no bail rules. Imagine being a kid going to that school and you come, You know your tortoise as a stick. Yeah, That's what the detectives they're saying. Our thoughts are with the poor kids. Who now you know, you know that Michael Angelo's been attacked Michael engined. They cracked. That's the name of the tortoise, Okay? Or is it pronounced Michelangelo Michelangelo? Uh, yeah. So now being held without bail, whose decision was it? I mean, he ran up all his three strikes just in just in the school. Don't you think? Well, somebody called the magistrate. That's who made the decision to deny the bail. He said no bail. This guy could go free. Well, that magistrate ought to be recalled. But I don't have a name. No. Yeah, of course. But the cop tried the cops said, I don't think this guy I think he's going to go right back there. Who knows what else? Those dabs a tortoise in this stupid judge Lets lets the guy go free because we're afraid of him catching the virus. I hope he catches the virus. 40 year old Jorge Robles to his mug shot. He looks kind of drugged out and probably is homeless. It doesn't say course right, because that's what we create. He was obsessed with the with the preschool. I don't know why I guess is there was an easy place to get the free electronic psycho. He doesn't think he just has impulses. Yeah, And then he takes all that stuff and the any and he sells it for more drug money. Right When we come back, we'll be talking to Mark Reynolds already Terrible, isn't it? It's beyond terrible. I feel so bad for that poor, defenseless tortoise. It haunted me that night. You've upset everybody can Upset John to the Lister sent historian said You guys should talk about it because he knows we cover criminals like this and you cover animals. So it's very upsetting. I don't know where I have a tortoise on the hierarchy. I would love to have a tortoise well higher than this guy. They're kind of dull, though, but they're so they're just sweet. They just seem so kind and innocent. You pet them? What the hell do you do? You just feed them. What do you feed them Lettuce there, Like like the lizards that John has lizard son. I got three lizards and a gecko and I visit them several times a day. I'm not really into the prehistoric type of creature. Stare at them. They stay I feel I mean, I'm in sync with snakes and reptiles, alligators, and now they like to lay there and stare. And I'm thinking, Yeah, this is just the way to go. Let's see what's the life you want pet them. Um no..
