"It's coming up faster than everybody's ready for including some some of the players. So to get us a little help on breaking it down. ESPN major league baseball analyst three-time all-star World Series champion. Mark Teixeira joins us in studio. Mark, thanks for hanging out. With those guys. I want to get your thoughts on Cuyler Murray, specifically deciding to play football, not baseball from your mind. What did you think of that? I think it's a great idea for for Cuyler Mirny great decision. And this is the thing, you know, people just assume that oh your first round draft pick in baseball. You're gonna make it and you're gonna make tens of millions of dollars. Most first rounders don't even make the big leagues. I looked back at my two thousand one draft. Joe Mauer was the first pick in that draft had a great career only three first rounders my year actually made an all star team. And I think seven dollars him you Mark Pryor for the cubs. So prior. Was it and take it one step further. I think it was seventeen didn't even make the big leagues. Right. So you take collar Murray who hasn't played a lot of baseball. He's been been focused mostly on football in his career. And you just throw them into the minor leagues. You never know if he's going to make it. So I think collar made the right decision here. What what do you what is far as baseball's concern of positioning playing in the outfield and what he was doing? How long so say a guy does make it from the first round pick. How long usually of a journey on average is it to get there. There's somebody like Collor Murray that that would probably start an able it's a three or four year journey for him. I was a little bit further. All I spent one year in the minors. But I was played football. I didn't have that kind of that kind of gift. I was laser focused on baseball played every summer played every fall on my college team. I mean, he's been busy doing other things. It's going to take it would have taken him a little bit longer to make the big leagues if he ever made it were you surprised how hard major league baseball fought four Cuyler Murray because we remember them, you know, sending people out in the as sending people out to try and talk to him, and, you know, people for major league baseball marketing was that shocking to you it wasn't. And I think baseball it behooves baseball to have Cuyler Murray's of the world in their game. I mean, you look at what Tim tvos done in the minor leagues with the Mets. I mean, this is Tim tebow was a star because of football and being a Heisman Trophy winner baseball sees Cuyler Murray star Heisman Trophy winner. If we can get them into our fold. We can sell minorly tickets. We can do things on ESPN. We can do a thirty for thirty on them. Those are that got baseball's wheelspin and they got excited about collar Murray. Unfortunately, he's he's. Aside to go somewhere fast. Tracked him a little more than others. I mean, you can't just put them up there and say, boy, I hope he does well, but maybe a little quicker than I believe if there was a question if the as are sitting there on the last day of spring training saying it's Cuyler Murray or it's a journeyman fourth outfielder. They're going to go with Colin Murray. And so he wouldn't have been quote, unquote, fasttrack he would have gotten the benefit of the doubt every step of the way, though, you're listening to go. Look and wingo on ESPN radio. ESPN two Jason Fitz in for tray with Mike and Mike Golic junior. We're talking ESPN major league baseball analyst Marta, Shera, Mark. Obviously, there's a couple of big names unsigned. We all know that we're all talking about it. But there's a conversation right now part of that is due to advanced analytics, and what it does to play value where should the balance exists between advanced analytics and superstar players. So I think when Alex Rodriguez signed his two hundred and fifty two million dollar contract back in two thousand salaries got crazy. And they were they were favoring the players, and I think for ten or fifteen. Year span the salaries favored players analytics has flipped that narrative a little bit. Because if you look at an average major leaguer, and then you look at a superstar making twenty five million bucks a year, you take their analytics, they're not that much different of a player. You look at Bryce Harper and Manny Machado and take their names out of it. And just put their numbers and wins above replacement and defensive Windsor above replacement and runs crate and all these different things that front offices us now, and it spits out a number that says, you know, what they're not worth thirty to forty million bucks a year. So I think the dynamic has shifted owners are now in a better position. And they also have the excuse of, hey, we're up against the salary cap rock to spend any more money. Do you think nobody will beat the Stanton three twenty five now because that was almost a given with Bryce and now it doesn't look like that's happening. So I think I think Mike trout will if he if he stays healthy. But again, this isn't it was just assumed that Harper Machado. We're going to get three hundred fifty to four hundred million bucks. And I thought it was ambitious for those guys. I mean Harper these great players don't get me wrong. But Harper and Machado or not Mike trout and from the Yankees, I stop everything I'm doing to go get Mike trout, if I'm any team that has money you would blow up your entire budget and your off season plans to get a guy like trout. Machado and Harper. You wanna make sure they fit into your team and into your roster. And and the finances of your budget talking to Mark share ESPN major league baseball analyst here with us on golick and wingo from a personal perspective for those guys before maybe we get into some of the league issues and the PA and what they're dealing with right now with the the league for those guys personally. What's this like, I mean, you were free agent back in two thousand and eight you signed with the Yankees in January of that year. But now you're getting close to for spring training and the time where you're used to getting ready to go back out there and playing baseball. What's it like for those guys now sitting on the shelf? I it's got to be tough. I mean, I I signed my free agent contract right before Christmas. And I thought that was late. I was calling my agent every day. Give me sign get this done. And he's like, what do you want to get the deal done, and you want to get the most money? Okay. Take your time. So I can just imagine. I mean, these guys have I mean, they might have some idea, but they could be on the west coast east coast. They could be in a warm weather place. Go like what if you sign with a place in your wife comes you and says, I really don't wanna live there. And now you're stuck for eight to ten years the wife, it's like I don't want to be there in the off season. And so now, you're traveling back and forth. And it is just it's got to be very tough for these guys not knowing where to play so with that bees. And all of this conversation superstar should get paid one of the conversations. I know the word middle classes hard to use in sports. But when you're talking about the middle class major league baseball player right now, how concerned is the majority are the majority of baseball players with the fact that superstars aren't getting their money. Well, I think everyone has to just readjust their expectations. We had average players making ten to twelve million dollars a year in the previous generation. I just don't see that happening. I mean, again, analytics tell you that an average player is. Not worth ten million bucks a year. So why am I giving out these contracts? It's almost like, you're you're you're looking for a high school prom date, and you ask the five hottest girls in your high school. They all say, no, you got. Okay. You might wanna just my expectations a little bit and be a little bit more realistic who who wants to date, but who wants to go out with me, all these teams all these players think the best teams are going to give me the most money, and I'm just going to have an easy ride. That's not the reality of of two thousand nineteen kind of where we are in basketball where those average players are getting this ten twelve million dollars. You wonder if that's going to correct at some point. There's so much money to be had there a quick one on the mentality. We've been talking a lot about especially the Laker players who all basically on the trade block, the trade doesn't go through. And now they're playing we're just here on Dave mcmanamon, ask one of the players. You know, what about this loss last night? And the player says look around is it look like we even lost. So then what the mentality is. You're on the trade block. You didn't get traded. Now, you're still with that team. Baseball's another huge trade sport. What's that like for a player if he's rumored to be traded? It doesn't happen in their mentality. It does it does hurt a little bit. But I think every player has to have a little bit of pride. I believe that no matter what my situation, I gotta go out there and do my best the problem. I think and this is in in baseball and basketball is tanking is real. And so if I look at my organization and know that they're tanking or whatever that means every organization tanks at a different level. What's my motivation to go out there and play hurt or or give it that extra effort, you know, and it just comes back to personal pride? Because if you know your team actually, would rather you lose then it's all about personality. And and you know, I'm going to step up and be a guy of character and go out there and play my best talking to Mark the share with us here on Golic and wingo. You mentioned pride. I heard a couple of guys. And I wish I could remember specifically who but pitchers and catchers reporting, the subject of openers a lot of the different roles that we've seen pitching come up over recent years in guys saying, you know, I would that would offend my pride if they sent out an opener for me before I'm going up. There is the how hard is that adjustment been as we've sort of compartmentalized the roles for a lot of guys especially in pitching for guys. We're used to going out there and say just gimme the ball in the big moments. Let me go wire-to-wire as guys have had to make that adjustment. Yeah. I think superstars deserve the places where they are. I mean, you're not gonna ask certain superstars to come in in the third. You know, the the the best Justin Verlander is not coming into the third inning. Those kind of guys they deserve to be able to say, you know, what I earned my right to start this game. But if you're a middle of the road guy, even though you starting in the minor leagues or maybe your rookie year. You got five ERA you do whatever it takes to to win the game. And whatever they tell you exactly the patriots mentality. Now, you hear Bill bell? Check talk about all the time. He wants character guys fit into his system. And if they don't fit into the system, they get replaced Tom Brady is not getting replaced if he disagrees with a coach, but you know, that fifth round draft pick that has character issues, and and doesn't kind of fit into the system. He's gone. And I think most players need to understand. What's your role? I'm a superstar. Yeah. I've deserved that. But if I'm a role player, I do the team tells me you're listening to win. "Not affiliate not affiliate, doc Gooden. No. Mark prior. That's true. I gave that one on purpose. There was a hard one was a pitcher. And he was great. And then his career was over in like four years. Mark Pryor should have been Mark. Mark fry Mark Pryor. And who's that Marlins pitcher? Jose fernandez. Now, Jim Johnson. Not Jim Johnson. Josh Josh, Josh Johnson. They always around the other nasty. Both are great. Mark Pryor was completely nasty. And his crew was basically overnight think he works in front office number. So that's that's how the thing goes Senate. We've a lot of Philly ones some big ones that put all different sports. We'll get to those three questions Thursday on Wednesday. Let's talk to Mike in Burlington wants about Carson Wentz here. What's up like what's going on? Hey doing man. I'm hanging in there. Mary listen, huge fan yours. I I like I like how you and how we're going back and forth last night. And I like how no matter what show you're on who's on with you, you you're staying strong conviction. And and you don't really waiver like that. And you see both sides of everything, or at least, it seems like you try to the one thing I'm curious to hear from you. And then I I wanna come back with with a point is. You said yourself, you don't know who these sources are that. He right. None of us do. But you you're pretty sure he's not making it up rich. I believe you, and I believe I believe him on. But are you willing to let sources who you can't put a saints to or a personality or character to? Say something about Carson Wentz. Which up until this point has never came out for you say, you know, you. He showed signs or at least gave clues that up to this point. By this. I haven't when I think about Carson Wentz up to this point the last thing that I've heard come up at all would be stubbornness until this article came out that wasn't even any of our mind. Well, let me give you examples. I because this is why I bring it up because I do think there's a couple of things that maybe we glossed over because we didn't think they were a big deal. But now you have this. So it's like I'm starting to connect dots. His rookie year after the Bengals game or that really bad game. They play against Cincinnati two eight right? Yes. There was a question. I remember it vividly. And if we could find audio of it we could dig backup. I'm sure we will play it if we could find a, but but at some point he did say he was asked about if you had to work on his mechanics and earlier Doug Peterson it said, yeah, Carson has to work on his mechanics. He said, I don't think I have to work on mechanics. They're not an issue. So that was always in the back of my mind then last off season Carson was asked about changing the way he played after the injury. And he said he didn't want to change the way he played. So I just. Like, those things were in my mind is I read the story, and I'm like, okay. That those things are kind of stubborn, and then you have this. So I just I have I have a fear now that he's stubborn and it could impact the way becomes in the kind of player. He becomes only. The only thing that I wouldn't even use fear. I would say only concern I have win is staying healthy. And he said that he didn't think think that he had to change his mechanic. But if you remember all off season going into two thousand seventeen they said, he got with Tom Brady's guy. Yup. Zone. Coach. Right. So he turned around, and he did it after he said, he didn't think he had more of a you know, what I mean? I believe in in in my gifts that got me to this point. Maybe I don't wanna say it in public because you know, what? I mean, I I am proud for. I believe in what I do got strong conviction. But the only thing with caution is like when the story first came out. I didn't like the fact that it's it sounded more like a hit piece to meet than anything because let's take the out the micro the article when he's talking about, you know, he didn't he wasn't comfortable with a lot of the stuff that grow was designing which to me really, I think that's a Doug thing. And he said, I don't want to run the whole stink this that all this eagles team over the last two years at its highest point was operating when Carson Wentz was under center, and he was playing the ball. Everything. I remember when those came they were the number one. Up to that point is scored fifty one points on them Shuki, sixty one points on them. And I mean, it was just a total annihilation that team and. MVP year in that offense. To me was like a gift and a curse because my got took my kids to the parade. And I'm sitting there like man, I really hope that they don't think because they wanna Super Bowl playing like this that they're going to ask caution to completely change style of play. And all that put him at the pinnacle of the sport, I would be frustrated and of uncompromising medication to because he's looking at it like look me, the one thing Frank Lloyd Lippo did while they were here. I think they played to post quarterback string. They played the Nicole strength. They played the Carson Wentz strength. It looked like that offense was forced this hold here. And I will be frustrated to me you're asking a guy who had success the highest success in the league wage here. Basically a completely different. I think that's fair. And that's that's the point. I think you you kind of circled around. And I appreciate your call to the point. I'm making of of maybe there's some stubbornness. They're like let's go to that last year. Offense was historic early in the year. Carson having an MVP season. A lot of it was improvisation Carson using his legs. They win without him using a different offense. More of the RPO offense. They come into the year, and they're using that RPO offense again, and you know, the story kind of paints the picture of Carson and want to run it. And there was the quote want to run the full stuff. You think about that? And that's the stubbornness I worry about I don't I want the eagles to run the offense the coaches believe is the best offense. And theoretically if Carson Wentz truly is a better quarterback, Nick foles, and he certainly has more gifts than Nick foles. Well, then the the best offense should run better with Carson than it did with Nick if Doug really believes the RPO based offense is the best off if they could run two full defense is get guys open, whatever. Then adds best. Carson she run better than Nick. That's just when you have an offense that works for a less talented quarterback. The more talented quarterbacks should run the offense. Even better. He is more arm strength. Here's more mobility. So that's the that's the part where I worry about stubbornness. I don't want Carson Wentz to care what the offense is. I want them to score points. Eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four. Let's talk to Paul in Downingtown. Hey, paul. Hey. Good, man. I'm not too worried about Carson. I mean, some of the things he played at a lower level this year than I ever thought that he would play after that second season. But you know, I I think a lot of this. Agree with previous caller that was a little bit of a hit piece. But I also think a lot of this can be just chalked up to. Communication issues because I honestly don't think of Carson Wentz is a selfish individual. If you look at it as a human being there's nothing that suggests that he just selfish individuals. All right. So what's your selfishness? Hey, well, this is what I'm good at. This is what I know. I can do this is what you know. I know I can dictate I can own the play here if we do this look at it this celebration as much as standing by his guns, you know. And you know, I I hear you are going to some degree. But also kind of disagree with it in that. Sometimes you take a quarterback would be a system quarterback. And then you take a guy that is a. A legendary quarterback, and you're gonna find things that that system quarterback can do a little bit better than the all star. And that lead to someone that isn't as good playing better in a system versus someone that is more talented playing in that same. So I don't know if that makes no it does. I think there's a reason why the offense at times last year in the playoffs this year end of the year looked better with a quarterback that has less arm strength. The quarterback has less mobility like it's not it wasn't magic. There was something to that happening. Then I think that's what you're getting at. Yeah. Exactly. But I also think this to like the other reason I'm not worried about Carson is because I believe that we have a very solid idea of who. Nick foles is. Now, I'm not like these people that Saint Nick foles is the second time you've God. Like, I I don't I don't I see a guy that plays. Well, I kinda plays. Very well. I also see the guy. Showed up in New Orleans that was four. And so I think Knicks legacy in the NFL is you don't know what you're gonna get over a sixteen game or in nineteen game season. We don't know that we're going to get the good Nick foles at the right times. We might get the bad mutuals at the one time. We did a couple of Sundays ago. We had a guy that probably you're now it was a team lost. But if you're looking for the single biggest factor. It was probably, you know. Yeah. He he did not play well enough he under through earth's which changed the game. And look if. Right. If Alison catches the ball, it might be different story. But you're not wrong Paul in that game. Nick foles did not play one off Paul you ready for three questions Thursday. Yes, sir. Here we go three clues. I give you you. Tell me which which athlete who had a short bursts of greatness. I am talking about clue number one. He passed away at the age of twenty seven. Number two had nearly thirty sacks over his five years at a position not known for Saks include number three. He played at the U in college who am I talking about? I forget his name. Tasty. Guests Paul and you had the right college. Appreciate the call. But that was actually our guy that was Jerome Brown twenty seven years old, and he also played at the U back when they were great eight hundred seventy nine ninety four ninety four pound not four nine four to hop in the requested Thursday and did your opinion on Carson Wentz change at all. After reading the article. I am worried about the stubbornness factor that seems to be present in Carson Wentz. His game. Joe? Julia with sports radio ninety four.
