"So it is part of the discussion which is fascinating considering I would have thought that the Senate candidates would not have touched it. Right. It's moving moving to be more of a populist issue than it ever was. Let's talk to our audience here. If you guys could think of one issue, I'm sure there's more than one one issue that motivated you as you made your choices at the polls today, assuming you've been devote already for how many folks was it healthcare. Nobody housing. Few hands on housing. Donald trump. That's you hands on Trump are so far criminal Justice. What other issues? Besides those Justice transit transit big one. How do people voted because transit, but it on transit. It was important to you. And that's well. Climate change. Yeah. I mean, that's that's another one that's been missing from a lot of the discussion in our state election. Certainly, you know, one of the frustrating things for me about the elections that were wrapping up today in New York is that we just haven't heard enough from governor Cuomo about what he wants to do with a third term. He had one general election debate for an hour. I don't know folks in the room saw that debate with Mark Molinaro, but the governor did agree didn't have to. But he he did agree to a one hour one on one debate. And he made sure that it wasn't a very substantive debate. He was very aggressive. He was sort of asking his own questions of Molinaro and really putting the Trump issue. Two mile an hour, which was probably an effective strategy in number of ways, but it wasn't really much of a policy discussion and the governor didn't agree to any other debates. So we haven't heard a lot from him about exactly what he wants to do. We have a sketch of an agenda for for the next term. But you know, my sense in talking to. About how their voting, and maybe that's indicative, how folks reacted to some of our questions here is that it's not necessarily always one issue. That's, you know, the single driving force or easy to name that it's sort of this collective group of issues, and knowing that certain district could swing democratic and then give you know, Democrats control of something like the state Senate. So since we have sample of people who voted here curious if anybody had problems at the polls this morning or this afternoon, but he have any delays or issues at all. Some delays come up and talk about it. Where where was this? What?.

"And I think that if you allow for early voting a lot of these comments will lose their seats. So I know that when you think about early voting most of the time, I do I think Republicans will want to have that happen. But I mean, we're dead here in the city, isn't that us? Democrats the wanna see the early voting happened. I think this is the time for you to call their bluff make it happens. If you do see a Blue Wave and the Democrats stick over most of the seats, he or New York City and across the state, and you don't see early voting you. So it was a big nonsense bluff, and they did nothing about it. So you are Republican, but you are not a Trump Republican fade a big point of that from from the get-go and you've called out people like congressman king for his racism. So that's the bent of Republican. You are being that came from Iowa. Sorry. Yeah. Being that when you look at the race in New York state today. What do you want to see happen who should win who should lose? What would be do? You think a good outcome? Given you come from a Republican standpoint. Trump would not support Mark Molinaro Martin linoleic meet the Novo for Trump for the same reasons. I did it. I find him to be prohibitive. I cannot support Donald Trump. I mean, if Donald Trump was president of the United States in two thousand one I left the Democratic Party and became a Republican. I would've never ever left kidding me. It's a nightmare. Imagine me here. I am president of the college Democrats SUNY Albany. You know, having a great time in politics, and I see the light of I see the Republican party's on wonderful things in my community. And actually did I grew up in the hood in the Bronx. There were cardboard murals on the corner every week because of the crackup them and because of killings and here, I am as young thirteen fourteen year old and I see majorly come in make a push to secure Hispanic support. I saw that with my is making this up. And then I saw how the seats were clean simultaneously. No longer. We're gonna have the same crime high associated safety the end of the drugs in my community, my friends in the longer being killed. I see that with the New York City. Publican ISM in a lot of us did become Republicans thinking, it's a good counterweight to of majority city where it's an overwhelming almost monopoly democratic role for you to have a counterbalance. So let's become Republicans and make make it happen. Let's push this agenda forward. And then here comes Trump. And he says some terrible things about people that I love about Mexicans and African Americans in gender people. I know my Cup of tea it's really depressing to be honest with you because I don't think there's any room for us to be able to bring you voters into the to the mix not right now. So Mark Molinaro is kind of guy that I saw as one of one of us. He's running in a party where Donald Trump's ahead of this party. And he's he's awful the way he talks about this caravan caravan equals Hispanics, look like me, I know that this is a tough situation. So I think that Mark Molinaro was in another situation. He'd be doing very well in the polls, and there'll be a very different story tonight. I wish he pulls it off. I see a lot of people very excited about a potential super democratic majority. The state Senate that concerns me, and it should concern you before you before you go into that you've worked in the minority for the state assembly or are you still doing? Okay. So you took a break when you're running for public advocate your back there, you're working with the assembly Republican. So you have just want to set that stage for folks listening. You have firsthand insights into the state legislature. So you're worried about full democratic control of the state. I'm not here as a Representative of the minority..

"Tonight on WCBS at seven, and you can see it on CBS to the debate tape this afternoon between governor Cuomo and his Republican challenger, Marc Molinaro. Governor Cuomo is on our Newsline. Governor this all started when you came on the radio Friday morning with us, and we asked you if you'd come on the radio and do a debate. And here we are on Tuesday. Are you happy with the way the whole thing turned out? Look, I thank you for the for the prompting. I said that you guys are the Genesis of the discussion. But I think it was important, and you know, this is not a normal political year. These are not sign nuanced questions. He's a basic questions. We have a very frightening situation in this country, and in this state, we have Washington that in my opinion is out of control and is trampling the rights of New Yorkers. So I think we need to know where everybody stands, and I know politicians like the doctor and don't like to answer, but I'm a New Yorker born and bred and sometimes the answer is. Yes, or no. And that's what this debate. Did you know, I think my opponent didn't want to answer anything because he has said different things to different people. That's that catches you in this business, right? Because now everybody's going to listen to eight eighty hey, and he has said different things to different people. But you're talking about basic questions of woman's right to choose. That's what cavenaugh nomination was all about. Are you going to roll back a gun control do support marriage equality DEA support the community? Do you support shackling women to gurneys when during childbirth when they're inmates which is what my opponent supports? We have a terrible tax coming our way from Washington cold salt where they're raising our property taxes in our income taxes and look my opponent wouldn't even answer the question. Do you support Donald Trump? So I think it was it was enlightening for New Yorkers, frankly, not what he said. But what he didn't say, and that spoke volumes governor were there any issues that didn't come up during the debate that you wish had. He wouldn't answer most of the quit literally. He would not answer. He's a Republican. Literally, he wouldn't say that he supports Donald Trump, even though his TV ads say that he supports Donald Trump. He wouldn't say that he's against a woman's right to choose which is a very important issue. He wouldn't say that he's against gun safety. We have the best gun safety laws the nation here. He wouldn't say he was against marriage equality that he voted against three times. We were the first big state in the country to pass it. But New Yorkers are smart. And when you don't answer a question that is a yes or no. They know what you really say. And I think that's what you'll see on the debate his refusal to give a clear answer was a clear answer. All right. Thank you governor Cuomo. Joining us live here. This is kind of like the post game show from the debate are Peter Haskell heard from Mark Molinaro after today's debate his was certainly a contentious debate. And there were times when it seemed like governor Cuomo was steamrolling over his Republican opponent Molinaro took note of that. And speaking to reporters after the debate we saw an individual who yet again is willing to say anything willing to walk over anyone and willing to insult anyone's conscience in order to score few political points. We saw it yet again today. I think that the people of the state of New York deserve something much better than that somebody who instead of inciting anger, and dismissing those with whom he disagrees actually listens learns and. Leads. And this governor is unwilling unable to do it. We'll provide you with all of the lies that were told today. But at the end of the day, I don't think New Yorkers, sir. Saw a governor. I thought and think they saw a bully. No. That's exactly who he is. We saw exactly the man he is which is an individual willing to dismiss anyone walk over the moderators walk over the rules. Ben, the bend the system in order to secure and maintain power. That's who he is. And that's who we saw today. The governor repeatedly tried to time all an hour to President Trump. The president is very unpopular in New York. But Molinaro never gave a clear explanation about how he feels about the president. When the president does something that's in the best interest of New York. I absolutely support it, and when he doesn't I'm not going to support it. But what I'm not going to do is give the governor of the state of New York, the right to dictate the dialogue. Listen, I have a lot of reasons why I want this president to be successful. The most most successful economy. In the world, currently and get New York continues to lag behind, but the governor doesn't get to corner. Somebody and expect that they answer the question the way he wishes to answer it, I certainly support this president's effort to make America more competitive, but and I certainly want to ensure that New York state benefits from economic growth Mark Molinaro after this afternoon's debate, which again, you'll be able to here in its entirety at seven o'clock tonight here on WCBS eight eighty and on CBS too. You can watch it. We just had governor Cuomo on live a couple of minutes ago with his thoughts on how it went today. And in the interest of fairness, Mark Molinaro will be joining us live coming up around six fifteen the evening talk about how he thinks the debate went all head of the airing of the debate at seven tonight, five thirty-six WCBS..

"After weeks of debating about to Bates governor Cuomo and Mark Molinaro have agreed to a face off will take place tomorrow evening, and you can hear it right here. A WCBS eight eighty at seven o'clock Lee marrying gov. The director of the institute for public opinion spoke with Kevin Rincon on the afternoon roundup public opinion say about this race with just a few weeks to go. Well, I mean, it's very lopsided in terms of the governor's race in New York. I don't think that comes as a great surprise. You're talking about an incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo who has know good popularity. He's. Running against a relatively unknown under-financed in an election. That is. At worst case. A slight Blue Wave in the best case for the Democrats, a very substantial Bluewave, and in New York, of course, where you have such a huge democratic registration advantage to begin with the Republicans are facing a very uphill fight. Just in terms of trying to level the playing field, let alone try to actually went. We saw some hesitation on whether or not there should even be a debate from both sides from governor Cuomo side on whether or not there should be a debate and Molinaro side on what kind of debate there should be who's the winners and losers. Here is the debate over the debates never really gets their costs. Anybody whole bunch of votes. We just sort of campaigns jabbing with each other for for their own egos and to try to just, you know, get one up on their opposition. You know, you're talking about a strong front runner and an unknown challenger the. Challenger needs the debate more than the front runner. The challenger news Lee needs to land, some substantial punches to even get some attention. If you're Andrew Cuomo the best thing you want is for the next morning for no one to be talking about anything that happened at the debate. We've seen attack ads should we expect more of the same? When the two meet in person. You know, again, I think that's probably the likely I think the challenger has to do that he has to go on the attack. Andrew Cuomo probably doesn't have to. But you just try to, you know, run some plays into line and punt on fourth and ten I think he's going to be being very aggressive because that's who he is. And and that's fine for for for New York audience Lee marrying gov. The director of the institute for public opinion on our Newsline. Thank you. Okay. My pleasure..

"Mark Molinaro is I campaign out there for you on the Reform Party line and become unable to grab right? But always run into people who will acknowledge that Cuomo has been a crook surrounded by crooks. And we are now in the most corrupt state. In america. I never get arguments from that on that. But people will say to me, what makes you think Molinaro and Republicans you any different aren't they all crooks don't they all have their beacon the chops? Because remember they'll say to me look at skill lows, the Republican he went to jail look at Collins. He just got indicted in eerie county, look at us assemblyman up in Rochester. How do you counteract that when people have become so jaded so skeptical that they just think everyone in politics is corrupt. Well, I. For every site has given them reason to believe that. And and here's the deal. Right. If if if I win, and I believe I will I will have one opportunity to get this right and people need to understand that this corruption this corruption is stealing from taxpayers. It's just writing and sheeting tax payers and my job if given the honor being governor will be bring it to an end, I'm not going Albany. You make friends we're going we're going to go to Albany to make a real difference, which means ending the corruption. Pay to play in the handout, a private interests and demand devote on term limits. We'll do all these things because I believe it is the most important thing and the most important problem that needs to be solved. Now, if the Republicans lose their majority in state Senate, some polls suggested they might and now you're elected governor, you're facing a stacked deck against you in the assembly controlled by hasty from the Bronx, a new democratic leader who would be in charge of the majority in the state Senate. How do you deal with them? If they stand in your way, even though you are in charge of the executive. Well, I I I I don't I don't think that's going to happen. But but that said, listen, I if I win it will be it will be because I was able to get support from Republicans and Democrats across the state who just want a more honest in a more decent government. So I will demand to the leadership, regardless of who it is that we vote on these real reforms to end the. Corruption to lower the cost and make New York affordable for New Yorkers, I work with.

"Like you will take a Lincoln. Hurry up and. Seventy seven w ABC and there were headlines all over New York that governor Cuomo and other candidates, but a special governor Cuomo was a big huge chicken. It was the headlines all over the place, and he didn't want to face off against our next guest Curtis because you know, he's ahead in the polls. He is always when he does these kind of pads the debates to have him on his terms his time. Well, finally, the showdown that we all want to see is going to be happening. It's going to be happening tomorrow. And it is with gubernatorial candidate Mark Molinaro, who's with the Republican party's with the conservative party. And he's also with the Reform Party of which you are the state chairman, my friend and joining us now here on Curtis and Cosby is Mark Molinaro. Mark great to have you. And congrats were so excited that you're going to finally be able to debate this guy. I appreciate it. But you know, New Yorkers want. We held. Out because we we demanded on behalf of New Yorkers and open debate where the two of us would be seen and heard and New Yorkers can watch and listen and learn the Baker decision. He didn't want to do that. And we we held out we held strong and New Yorkers one. We get this is the first time the governor will will participate in a lot in a one on one televised debate. And I am I'm I'm very I'm very grateful to those people who spoke up both in the media and throughout the state and made perfectly clear that elections in debates aren't about the candidates are about the voters now, Mark Molinaro. What do you think prompted the governor to no longer follow his previous strategy was to allow one bait or one debate one debate only when he ran for governor I against palladino then against rob Bastian Reno in which he made the demands of the sponsors that the allow the third party candidate stall. So being attendance which enabled. The discussion to deflect and distract from him and him alone. Why is it that you you and he were able to actually void having third party candidates? Well, I there will be a league of women voters debates held in in upstate New York with all the candidates, although the governor hasn't agreed to do that. I I've I've agreed participate. I think the media I, you know, I get a lot of credit to the New York Post and two others across the state who ran editorials and made it perfectly clear that it's not acceptable. You know, forty nine other states have one on one debates between the incumbent governor there. And so I just think that the pressure of that sort of, you know, public embarrassment acknowledging that the governor was either afraid or too arrogant. You're Bates was was the reason that ultimately motivated him to to do it. I mean, I, you know, we'll see we'll see what happens. But I I think that's what that's what drove this home. And you know, Mark Mullen are our listeners obviously are berry intent and following the case. Okay. So closely tell everybody I know it's being recorded tomorrow earlier, and then airs tomorrow night, tell tell everybody where they can listen to it and watch it. So it will I think it'll air live on CBS radio. It's gonna be it's gonna be recorded on CBS radio and then aired at seven pm on both CBS radio and CBS television. And they've offered it up to their affiliates to air as well. So so we're recording it tomorrow at one thirty pm. It'll be aired on CBS radio and CDS television at seventy m one hour the governor I with Marcia, Kramer, and and and had rich lamb, right? I get it. Right. Thank you. Sure, I covered all moderating a conversation about the important issues facing New Yorkers, which by the way causes me a little bit of problem tonight. And I I you know, this, and I I really feel front. I have to apologize to you. You know, the governor didn't give us much leeway on schedule or day or time. So we're taking what we can get for New Yorkers. But that means that I need to need to be getting ready to evening. So I've been a few a few pints at a pup sometimes so yes. And by the way, we are sad about that. Because our big pubs in politics tonight. We were going to have you as one of our featured guest, but I am happy again, Mark for New Yorkers as you say that you're spending the time in that you're going to be with this big debate. Because he absolutely should debate. You and understandably so that you're preparing for it. But I know we will definitely miss you tonight. We have of course, we got Bill O'Reilly, and we got the medal of honor recipients, and we have shell Farley. Who has you know was running for Senate? But we will definitely miss you. Mark. Why you've got a great lineup. And I. And I believe me when I tell you. I'd rather be with all of you at a pop then. Crowd, by the way. We are. We are you know, you're gonna miss Curtis than I are a lot of fun during the day. We're fun at night. Well, I will say this Curtis has been with you my meetings. And boy is he a lot of fun to be around. Mark in the only debate governor Cuomo admitted to in his primary against Cynthia Nixon. It was broadcast across the state. But I gotta be honest with you and all the places that I've been as chairman of the state Reform Party. And that's how you're running on. So I'm encouraging everybody. Hey, you can vote for Marco Republican conservatives they don't need it as much as we need you to vote for Mark Mullen, our and the Reform Party line but out in Nassau Suffolk. Westchester, orange Dutchess Rockland and up in your area throughout the mid Hudson. People are really disappointed that they never once addressed an issue that was important antibody other than people in the five boroughs. Will you make sure that? He's upstate and midstate issues are addressed. Yes. Yes. We are. We are one St. and the governor needs to speak for all of us in my my job is candidate is is to fight for every New Yorker and has governor to serve every new New Yorker, I listened to the the the the the song that you played on the lead into my getting on the on the air. Of course, that was the theme song to the show underdog. And and underdogs underdogs need somebody to speak up and talk for them. So my my role is to speak on behalf of the underdogs across New York state. And finally, what did they corrupted government that you often ignores their their issues, so what's your strategy without giving too much away? Mark Mullen hours, you're prepare for this big debate tomorrow against governor Cuomo. What's your strategy because here's a guy who's you know, season politician Bennett office twice going for a third term what sort of the way to kind of get under his skin or get a different answer than sort of the usual, canned dancer that we often hear in press conferences from him. Well, listen, his answers are his answers. I'm gonna try witty and charming. We'll see if that works, but it works with us. In all seriousness. My. I think we I think we lost. Yet eighteen him because upstate in the most recent poll Quinnipiac college poll, Mark is beating Cuomo out in the suburbs outside of the five world she's slightly behind but he gets clobbered in shady on that note candidate for governor. Mark Mullen are on the Republican conservative. And remember the most important the Reform Party line is joining us back, Mark. This is a powerful forum to people living in the five boroughs. Also, who in this reaching poll just have you clobbered seventy seven thirteen whereas within the rest of the state, you're doing well, you just slightly behind in the suburbs. Beating Cuomo upstate what can you say to residents in the five boroughs to convince them that it's time to ask Cuomo because they seem to be in the bag for him. Well, I listen, I truly care about the issues that New Yorkers face. If you're if you're concerned about transit system crumbling apart is because this governor doesn't wanna take response for you. I'll office, and we'll do this together for those families living in subsidized housing lead paint and tainted water. I get it. I grew up on food stamps. I know the challenge, and I know how government can often ignore their needs. I want to help fix those problems. I I wanna make New York City more and more accessible to the people who live here. And that's that's my commitment. And by the way, it's it's my commitment to govern without ideology. This isn't about party, politics or partisanship. It's about solving problems for ordinary people. And my commitment is to do that. You know, it's interesting. Mark Mullen, our that in many of the things, and obviously it's a it's a strategy by Cuomo. He essentially says, oh, I'm debating Trump. He's kind of trying to paint with the Trump brush. But the irony is you didn't vote for Trump. I didn't listen to the end of the day. We have a federal government, and I need the federal government to focuses attention.

"In WCBS. It really is a beautiful morning you step outside. And you realize just how cold it hasn't. It's on the upper twenties and many of the distant suburbs right now. It's up to forty six in Manhattan heading for high today with sunshine around sixty cloudy tonight, maybe shower in spots with the low fifty to fifty five Craig Allen says tomorrow, any shower should give away to sun and clouds. Maybe a shower later in the day with a high sixty to sixty five big change Sunday though, cloudy, chilly and a high only forty five to fifty on Sunday and the five day forecast. Slight moderation Mondays high fifty to fifty five with mostly sunny skies in Tuesday, sunshine and milder, Tuesday's high back up to around sixty nine fifty a WCBS the Dow up one hundred sixty seven points will New York voters get a chance to hear from the two candidates for governor debating, or at least talking to one another before election day, we're doing everything we can to try to make it happen. Yeah. The answer to that question. Steve two hours ago would have been no. But the answer now is maybe a little better than maybe. Because after a lengthy live conversation with governor Cuomo last hour, he did agree to come on our air tomorrow morning and have a moderated conversation with Mark Molinaro, but the Republican nominee who is the duchess county executive said it's not fair for the governor to dictate the rules in have this with such short notice and only in New York City, Mr. Molinaro says he wants it to be on a weekday. And he wants TV cameras you have TV cameras. Let's have a conversation. You talked to our folks you get them in the room. I think we're worrying too much about TV cameras here. What we would like to do is facilitate the conversation, Mr. Molinaro. This is exactly what happened with syncing. And and the rest of the state of New York doesn't get to participate with all due respect boaters deserves here from all of us from both of us in a way that they can do it. That's not a debate. Have you ever heard of a presidential debate scheduled twelve hours before the debate? I mean people have lives tomorrow. And and it isn't fair to anybody in the state of New York that they get just one opportunity come on guys schedule it on front on Wednesday. I'll be there schedule at a time. We're with the public has an opportunity actually cook air to participate. I'm telling you with all due respect you. I am not going to be a part of a fraud. It is a fraud to suggest that voters have some benefit from from last minute. Scheduling of something that nobody nobody will have time to prepare for. That's Mark Molinaro the duchess county executive running for governor as a Republican. And again, we're now waiting to see if we can make this happen at the two sides to hash out the details. But both do say they're willing to talk on their own time with their own rule. So we'll see if we can help them find some middle ground governor Cuomo. We appreciate your offer to come on tomorrow morning and talk with Mr. Molinaro, Mr. Molinaro if you are listening. Right now, or your people are listening, the invitation still stands we hope to speak with you. "Three we've had some fast-breaking political developments in the past hour here on WCBS. And now the ball is in Mark Molinaro court. He's Republican running for governor of New York. He has been trying to get governor Cuomo to debate him before the elections coming up in two and a half weeks. So far, the governor has said, no. But when we talked to governor Cuomo live on our air last hour, we told the governor we were willing to host a discussion about issues and not partisan politics. And he said he's on board. There has to be a moderator. Who keeps the conversation relatively substantive rather than what has been happening, which is this viewing of vileness and hatred. New York is a fragile society based on diversity tell you what governor we're going to take you up on that we are going to extend the invitation to Mr. Molinaro, let's not even called a debate. Because as you say, maybe there's negative connotations with the word debate. But we're going to extend the invitation if not tomorrow, maybe we do it on Monday, just sit down with a moderated talk about some issues you game for that. Well, I'll be here. Tomorrow monday.
