"According Tio Adrian would general ski is that reversed. You have that reversed D'Antoni's an assistant coach under Steve Nash. Together. D'Antonio Nash were the architects of the seven seconds or less offense with the Phoenix Suns in the mid to thousands. I don't know what style they play, because if you bring in Mike, and he's always been an up tempo coach, But this is a little bit different team with the Nets. And then what style to Steve Nash wanna play? I'm assuming that they're going to want to maybe revisit seven seconds or less of offense. But I'd have to check in with the head coach Kyrie Irving to see what kind of style the Nets are going to play, and the other head coach Kevin Durant, so they have, like four sort of head coaches there with Brooklyn Nets. With D'Antoni, Steve Nash, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Leopold. This'll be like Mark McGwire getting a manager's job and bringing in Tony LaRue says his bench coach. So McGuire got the White Sox job right and then wrong, Tony LaRussa. It's not a bad idea. All right. We gotta pull question. Make 11. Yeah, I have a quick follow up on your big 10 thing. You said Ohio State of Michigan support Nebraska because they want to get enough games to qualify, possibly for college football playoff. So that Zira caveat where that's assuming that the Ohio State Michigan game is canceled his otherwise like Michigan can't Qualify for the college football playoff. But if they beat Ohio State, no doubt Yeah. You know, it's like I said, if that game has to be cancelled, O c. It's ajoke on Michigan Campaign. Ohio State. Oh, I was in my serious voice that I'm sorry. Sorry not used to you say some funny. Yeah. I mean, I'm used to the whole the whole back row, not saying it. Speaking of that, you know it's a tradition, unlike any other I don't know how many years we've been doing this 15 years. But Todd every holiday somehow incorporate sports names into the holiday, and it used to just be an email that was sent on what never made it on air for years at the mother ship. There was always an asterisk next to the Home Run records because at first Rodger marris had more games to get 61 home runs than Babe Ruth did to get his sixty and then of course in these steroid off there were astrix added to home run records by Bobby bonds and Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa have a feeling that 2020 is a year is going to be our year of the asterik where everything has an asterik attached to it. I was thinking about sports records this year where you've at home run leaders in baseball while they only had like, you know a quarter of the games they would normally play so naturally wouldn't have as big a numbers. It's kind of weird how everything we have an asterisk next to it, especially when you're talking about people going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or the Nascar Hall of Fame at this point. They don't know if they're going to be inducted in 2021 or 2022 and we'll those classes be combined and how will it work? I'll try to figure it out right now put a big old a Street next to everything.

"You are no our families. We know your family. We Adore you and we just wanted to say. Thank you so nice gesture for that all guy. And when the broken Arrow animal shelter in Oklahoma shared a picture on facebook of a special dog that needed a home. One family made sure they would be adopting her by camping out in front of the shelter for twenty-seven hours. The Border Collie puppy has a unique heart-shaped patch of her on her chest, which inspired hundreds of people to respond, but just one family went the extra mile and stepped up to be first in line, their determination and dedication paid off because a family was able to adopt the dog and give her a happy home. Isn't that so American right there we find a way to take a cute puppy and turn it into a black Friday situation where somebody's gotTa campout twenty seven hours before the doors open. This is the thing that always kills me with these stories. If you see a story about a dog with a heart, shaped patch, a for or one that was had a horrible horrible abuse story. Hundreds and hundreds of people want to adopt that one dog in it kills me because I always think adopt another dog or cat, or whatever there are hundreds of them all over every city living wherever you live with. "One homers and twenty two games like he was on fire because at the beginning remember case it was. Griffey was in the mix, and then all of a sudden, and then all of a sudden comes out of nowhere, but one thing I didn't. I don't I didn't remember about that. Season was that the table was set from ninety seven, because mcgwire hit fifty eight Knox in in in ninety seven, so right from the jump, the pressure was there the stage was set, and then he hits sixty one at home with the mayor's family there on his dad's sixty first birthday like that is just that's the stuff of Legend I. Mean that whole season was just insane. No you're right bill. You're right because he hit that fifty eight year before you right coming into like. Maybe he's the guy that could beat mayors and yeah for him. That was cool part of the story when he said he had sixty one on his dad sixty first birthday I was like you know that you know the universe knows I don't know there's the amazing stuff and and like just. You're right, but even the social stuff 'cause. It was great for me to like like I said I had that front row seat like I played against Sosa mcgwire there in my decision so like when we were when we went to Wrigley I know a few those hit against the rats because we were just throwing poop soup up, there frigate like like. We're GONNA. We're GONNA. Throw this thing on Jose. Debate is going to throw this in their eighty seven with no sink. See how far you can hit us, so it's a real quick like. But just like Waylon Avenue. I. Like I watch I watch. Those are just crushing balls to. And then when he had that, we was that twenty one bombs at twenty two days ridiculous like it was just it was next level, but to watch them go back and forth. That was cool like when when Maguire got sixty Sosa was at fifty eight and the next thing you know Sosa would. That was tied sixty two. It was it was unbelievable. Unbelievable history keys. Case this the steroid element change your remembrance of it at all. It doesn't appear to bother Sammy Sosa based on what he said last night and A. Choir is been sort of. He's had a difficult time I think expressing what he feels about it, but it in retrospect. Feeling about it now that you did then. No. I don't as a matter of fact I think now that I'm older and I. Look back and really appreciate it. I appreciate it more. I Don I I have so many mixed emotions about the steroid stuff. Just because you know I was I was in that earn and You know whatever you know, I am not. Everyone was doing steroids like you know I know those guys. Are you know obviously in the mix of that all that stuff, but I I wanna tell you this i. don't even know what it just means. Anything but I played with a bunch of kids who are on steroids and they were worse. They were. Like. Get off that you need to get off that age the that aero as quick as possible because you're terrible, you better last year. How about how how about how Sosa? Looks like his appearance I mean I just see in the footage him back in the day. You know he's this young good looking guy who's just hitting jacks all over the place. And now he looks like he owns a vampire restaurant I. Got The strangest. Look going on I don't know what that is. You look a little lighter a little different. 'Long Gone Summer' Documentary Revisits Controversial 1998 Home Run Chase

"Are joined by the director of long gone. Summer AJ SCHMUCK AJ. Congratulations loved watching that film. What does it feel like to have the film finally be seen by the world. I mean it's crazy. It's a been a long journey to get to this point, and it feels like a total miracle to have finished. With the pandemic and working separately with all my team so finally being able to get the film done and get it's ESPN. Feels like a huge accomplishment. Why did you decide to start the dock with the actual baseball's that mark mcgwire hit. Well is in part because we. When we met Todd McFarlane The Great Comic Book Artist Entrepreneur Who who bought all the balls or a bunch of balls including at number seventy. I just love the way he talked about the home run, and how it is something that really connects baseball fans to the game in a way that you don't get in any other sports so as soon as we like walked out of of interviewing him, I I turned to my producer, and said you know that's the beginning of the film. Is Him talking about what the home run in baseball means and how it connects fans, drinks have direct contact between Maguire's bat, and and the person who catches it. So that was that was great also has sort of the other. Bonus. Positive thing of reminding you that someone paid more than three million dollars. Baseball that's how big this was That's how much this took over the country that someone would would go to that extent. To own that ball. Having when watching that scene in Rhode. explained. HOW MICHAEL JORDAN HITS! A shot wins the championship. They go and bring him the basketball, and if if a quarterback breaks a record with the past, bring him the football, but with the home run. You literally hit into the stands, and you never see it again and it was sort of a way that the fan can take home a piece of the game in baseball. They can't other any other way. Way that happens with the home run, but then you did you hear him sort of articulate this, and then the question is asked how much you pay for it. It was just so much money that I wanted to know. How does this? How much are they paying people that bitter comic book illustrators, nowadays like what is the going rate for commentator Peter? How can this man afford this multimillion dollar baseball? Spun was very successful, but yeah I think. He spent basically every penny he owned and you know I I think in part. He did it because he he wanted to get into the business of making action figures for for sports. And and that happens I, mean he basically that was his way of getting everyone's attention in saying. Hey, I'm serious I. Care About Sports Let me make action figures, and and he did I think it was not only something that he wanted to do one thing that didn't make the film which I I tried to find a way to put it in, but he talked about how. His brothers are all baseball fans, one of the key excitement for him in getting the balls with just to be able to say I've got the baseball. As like well. You got three million dollars for that God. Bless Ya. I know that's right. The kid sweet swinging lefty King Griffey Junior, one of my favorite players growing up as Wa. Carry a bet to this day. was more of a factor. With Sosa mcgwire that people actually a realize. Can you acknowledge how his performance affected them? Certainly I mean one of the crazy things I think about that. Season was that people really went into it from spring training, thinking that either Maguire or junior were gonNA. Make this record. Both of them at hit and high fifties the year before this was an expansion year. Everyone just thought like this is GonNa happen went into the season, thinking that Griffey was was in it. You know right I think if you even remember the Griffey was in it. You forget that he was in it until late August when he had kind of a long slump I think he only hit one one home run and like twenty games and may still hits. Hyphen! which is a tremendous season that gets overlooked by what happened with mcgwire and Sosa, but certainly yeah I mean congruency. Junior had an amazing year that year and. It was in a in addition to to all the stuff. We remember of Sosa and mcgwire. He was. He was hitting the ball longer. In Maguire was sort of famously one of the bash brothers, and he had a great career while he was in Oakland with the athletes and Sammy Sosa wasn't as celebrated as a baseball player, and he said something in the film that really hit accord me, said quote ahead had to continue hitting. Because if not, they're not going to mention me. Why did you include that emphasized that and what that means you from Sami? I thought it was great. It Sammy acknowledged that he wanted to the respect. He thought he deserved, and he does that a few times I think in the film and I mean that's sort of a lighthearted way of like saying like. I turned on sports center at night and if I don't hit a home run like they're not gonNA mentioned. He wanted to be mentioned. He wanted to be acknowledged and I think that one of the things I hope that the film does Sami. Wasn't that well known outside of Chicago before ninety eight, but. That's in part because the comes weren't very good, but the Sammy was was a great player for the cubs. A thirty thirty guy I thirty thirty guy ever in cubs history. He was a top home run hitter in the National League for years. I was one year where he was on track to get close to the record. But was injured in in August so You know was a goal to sort of illuminate. The fact that Sami wasn't just somebody who like. Jumped out of nowhere in June of Nineteen Ninety eight that he meant something in Chicago before that. Implant in Chicago, the weather can be a factor. Do you believe it play as much of a factor as Sammy Sosa states. I mean all I can tell you that. We were there in May of last year to shoot the Saint Louis Chicago series in their. Earliest! May and it's snowed one morning. And I was just like. I grew up in southern Illinois outside the St, Louis and I love Chicago. Chicago is great, but I was just like hell though. Away being at the game it was cold. It was rainy and it was just like damn out. This is football. Weather's that I don't know but yeah. No. I definitely know He. He I believe in when he says he's. He was a hitter that did better when it got warm. Not that good of a hitter in the cold. Certainly, see see that that would be the case. Which I think is also in the film. You'll see you know one of the things that makes a Kerry Wood's twenty strikeout game. All the more impressive is that he's. He's doing it on one of those days, and the rain is coming down east going through like You know thirteen fourteen fifteen strikeouts that day, so? Yeah! It's whether in and regularly I think is probably no joke. With all of what's happening in our society in the world, not just in our country today we kind of have to look at things in stories in history, and currently through the filter of race. And how do you think race played a role in this particular story of mcgwire and Sosa and that summer? I think that people wanted to feel good about the fact that they liked this battle between these two guys who were from different cultures different countries. And different races. That probably made people want pat themselves on the back for feelings so good about it I think in part there still memories of what had happened to Hank Aaron and sort of the ugliness when he was. Setting the all time home run record. So people felt like. Wow, look at how far we've come to celebrate and get excited about the fact that this could be. A champion of homerun record that was held by either of these two guys. There's a somewhat famous. Cartoon! Where the two of them are depicted with their bats wall has been broken in the wall, says racist. You know like that. The two of them had finally solved this problem. They beaten it. And I think. It's just a you know. It's one of those times when. People have wanted to. Congratulate themselves for reaching a certain. Threshold and clearly all of those congratulations were way premature. And we're still. We're still fighting for it. I hope that the people. Look at this though as a story of these two champions, and can get some excitement out of the fact that they did come from different backgrounds, and they have very different stores,

"Front of the microphone and as you're interviewing him in present time he still that way it's for me it's very uncomfortable talking to mark McGwire did it feel that way he's not a he's definitely not a comfortable you know being the center of attention you know and I I I it certainly different than Tammy was then and even when you sat with them now I I think it's an odd thing for him I don't know if it's a just a general shyness or or just how we how we build but it's it's not really in nature to want to go on at length well I I felt you know quite you know I'm pleased that he was willing to do it even if it's not a favorite thing to do we're talking to director AJ Shinnok long gone summer Sunday night eight o'clock on E. S. P. N. mark McGwire's so many magical moments in this guy's life his first at bat as a kid was a home run he hit number sixty two in the bottom of the fourth like Roger Maris did he hit number sixty one on his father's sixty first birthday I mean there were still many one on it by the sixty first birthday at it's crazy the magical moments in McGuire's life yeah I mean that part of what made it even feels the magical you know you get the new in the bottom of the fourth game ending in America I think he is you know there's the the number of years that I spent a lot of bad kinda numerical things that lined up that's even that when you look at them all that if it does feel you know magical or or is it a look even right by that but that's kind of what made it that made it feel so special I mean one thing we hoped they came through in the in the phone yes actually because you know market admitted using steroids you know during you know ninety eight he's gotten some criticism for saying that he believes he could have had sixty two without them that year yeah we wanted to make sure the people knew that yeah I'm market at forty nine as a rookie the help that rookie record for thirty years right I don't I don't think that anyone who alleges thing that mark was doing anything and that even to boost his performance yeah we held the record at U. S. B. for a number of years I mean he is he is a natural home run hitter is not lying when he said he was born to head home right the end that's the that's been pretty much alike I love hearing ship carries home run calls chip is on with us tomorrow George will is on with us tomorrow you have both of those guys in the dock did you learn anything from chip or George will yeah he really did help do one of the things that was important to me because the way I I related to that he then was in the ways in which it just underlined the generational aspect of baseball how the how fandom is passed down from parents to children right in this story you know you had the Merritt family there you had mark with his and you had Jack Buck and Joe Buck in the broadcast booth and you had to Kerry carrying on the legacy of his grandfather that same year he was supposed to be paired with his grandfather right I mean the the generational aspect of that year that's everything I feel about baseball you know I grew up there with my dad saying Hey look at the station wagon and drive around with the Jack and Mike Shannon on the radio you know I my grandfather without no Laura and we'd all gather around the barbecue grill and use the cubs fan we were cardinal Bandon right we have stood out it that generational family aspect that's why that's even meant so much to me at the time we connected me with you know my memories of my father and my grandfather and all the reasons I love baseball where did you grow up I grew up in Evansville right outside St Louis okay so you know cardinal fan from birth but a lot of relatives in the Chicago area and and a lot of lot of compan in in in that group I grew up in Peoria which is half cubs half cardinals my father was a cub fan my mother was a cardinal fan so in the afternoons we would have the Cup games on with Jack Brickhouse in at night while we were eating dinner I would hear Jack Buck every single night talking about the players and that's when I started getting into you know Jersey numbers because he would talk about their numbers on their jerseys in just the way that he spoke I can just still hear his voice in my head to this day it was it was pretty magical seeing him in the special well that was a really wanted to do I mean I had so much of everything I I remember about baseball the kid is hearing jacked up in my chat and make those calls and described the game to me all right and one thing I have the experience from the beginning what I really want to I want to talk about Harry you know I want to talk about Jack Bach they I want them to be figures in this town I wanted to be about how people fell in love with you know watching the teams on WGN that listening to the team play on camelback right now the that was a big deal to me and and I I was thrilling to me you know you have to hear their voices as the as you know as loudly and then hitting media and with all the motion at the bank that they did back then I can't wait for people to see this just brings us right back to ninety eight and I got to ask you I knew was gonna happen you sat down with Sammy and you said listen you haven't been invited back to Wrigley Field the cubs have been invited you back why do you think and I know he wasn't going to admit that he use any DVD's I know that wasn't gonna happen but he really didn't have an answer yeah I mean I do think he said something that I haven't heard him say before in terms that much and I I think he gets to the point and he's getting tired of being asked and and just the fact that he knows that people think he's done that when he believes that he is that clearly in front of Congress than I did you know I think I think that's where he's at right now he he he believes you know that he's being disrespected by by just the implication and you know whether you believe that he did or didn't you know obviously it's different with mark hood who admitted that and and what mark before he admitted that there were you know a number of investigative news reports there were people who said that they witnessed him doing it we don't have that with family we have a an anonymous survey test the the New York Times reported net debt so it's a little bit more challenging we don't know for sure we have our our expectations from how he looked and what he was capable of doing right but it's it's and now we don't know we we don't know but this is how my brain works we all want a happy ending right so we this documentary airs on Sunday night the thirty four thirty he starts the dialogue with the cubs maybe the cubs in social work out some talking points he comes clean and he's invited back to Wrigley everybody forgets about it I mean what would be better than you know to it to find out in the next you know a month or so like Hey when when baseball is going to come back to regulate and if this is going to solve them to me it seems like a perfect thing to have happened I would love to see that happen.

"Cardinals mark McGwire and the Chicago Cubs in the sos and bark on a chase of one of the game's most hallowed records igniting the passion and imagination of fans and non fans everywhere long god summer premieres this Sunday June fourteenth at nine eastern on ESPN and ESPN two the film will be available to stream on ESPN plus following the debut for all the latest headlines information tune the SportsCenter on ESPN radio all throughout the day John Amaechi played many years in the NBA it is one of the least interesting things about him we enjoyed talking to him about all sorts of things so let's begin John and thank you for joining us what do you do with the news that the NFL is now ready to commit two hundred fifty million dollars over the next ten years to social causes so I'm happy that they're going to spend some money I think spending money in lieu of actually changing is is pretty rich I mean how could you have any respectable for Colin Kapernick and and embrace this message whole heartedly would be my take you know what what I'm what I'm truly magical Negro George Floyd must be in order for the NFL to suddenly change on a dime like that none of the other deaths that happen on a daily weekly basis move them not not fi dignified protest of one of their own no no no that course constructive dismissal but but somehow this is that moment it makes absolutely no sense and it's a disgraceful disgraceful show to me again send that money to it right now the older right because this and take no credit for it because they don't deserve any and so what do you do with for example same thing with NASCAR and finally listening to their one a black driver and saying okay now we'll get rid of the Confederate flag this is nothing to do with that one but driver they could give a damn about him this is to do with a sensitivity in the public at large and the scrutiny from from television the problem when it finally gets back on television this is I mean when we were when we reward people for doing something that was known to be terrible in the nineteen hundreds for for for continuing that for another century I mean we we just we've known that that's what that flag stands for symbolism in America is deeply important it's deeply important in the United Kingdom to but we've known that this is a flag that it's not about anything but a traitorous group and that's a British person saying that it would be like having a British flag on your thing is that the one that would be less offensive now major you questioning the timing and sincerity on all of this is that what is that what I sense you're doing here I think you picking up what I'm putting down and listen I will take it that good courses are aided by the guilt of rich white men but what I will not have is that their misdeeds that consistent and ongoing misdeeds are somehow a radic hated by this one act of largesse I still dont is raising a finger in here like Joe name if I noticed you through sincerity in there with timing and you didn't just support your denture listening to the our needs why were you well why were you upset at economic adviser Larry Kudlow what is it that he said that bothered you recent I don't know how or when was I upset with Larry Kudlow I'm I thought that I saw on Twitter that you were bothered to with the idea that he had said that there is no systemic race the United States oh no I'm sorry minding yeah you know what the problem is I have taken I have taken to electively dropping the names of people I hate out of my brain I just think they shouldn't occupy my hard drive and so I completely put but now you said I can see his ridiculous frame in a bad suit listen the idea of why are we asking people like that about important questions I was on a panel the other day on TV here in the U. K. what they were asking about the two metre distance and we should we keep the ticket and it's like one the person next to me was a television personality the person on the other side was just some bloke and and it's like are you looking public health and even I think this is a conversation we should lead to the scientists so the fact that he thinks he can talk about systemic racism and deny it a quick you know unequivocally when it spits out some specific been studied for years and years and this is one of those things that is more roundly accepted them climate change it's just ridiculous the boldness of it to dismiss a systemic prejudice on the basis of what you would prefer to be true and what is a more politically correct line for that particular individual disgusting where do you think we're gonna be in six months John you know what I I look back I'll look back on all my pontificating over the years and the number of times that I've sat with people talking about how with the question so does this mean everything's going to change in my answer over the years I can make a tape of it is just I hope so I hope so I hope so but every time I listen to that I hope so it's a little bit less sure and it's never been less fuel than right now I think there will be some some assistance because people at the NFL and others will pay to assuage the guilt knowing that it gives them some runway to continue to be truly terrible and so maybe in the short term some organizations some some funds will be enhanced but will systemic racism change no I'm surprised to hear you say that you're less hopeful now that you've been because this feels like a more hopeful time like you're just not buying that that it can indoor only the kind of changes are quiet people are very quick to talk about ally ship and and and and that's what's required right ally ship it's not just black people who need to fortify themselves and vote and whatever else that these are important elements but we need ally ship but people think ally ship is is I don't know reading a James Baldwin book but that's that's not it educating yourself the number of people down the number of people this week who I've been talking to on television and they've been saying things like I never realized that white people cross the street when you walk towards them I can't believe it and I am so saddened and exhausted by this because it's not that they're racist because of that but what it means is they have not have the information they require to be an ally and some of these people of fifty and sixty years old so they have not in the course of fifty or sixty years in a city as diverse as London ever once had an instance where they've created a connection with a black person that's strong enough to know this information and that is devastating so while I think lots of people lots of allies are learning things about that black and brown brothers who are being differentially treated I am not sure that many people are going to be willing to enjoy that for much longer and they just kind of hope to the news cycle move on as you've made the television rounds is there any one point or any group of points that you've been insistent on making because you need people to hear it yeah I've been telling people it's not enough to not to be racist it's not enough to not be racist you have to be anti racist and that is not a controversial position to be against the **** party is not a controversial position to be against people who believe that black people are less than human is not a controversial position and I think that is the minimum we should expect in order to be civilized we can call ourselves civilized that's the one part the second part is that what you can do as you decide to go on to racist you most people don't have and I think I said this last time this massive in front of the whole world but what they can do is they can decide that maybe the.
