"What i was going to say about. School mind happened years ago. A very talented team at school. Mine's different exhibitions and nearly be colorado. Because they come into a veteran team they play a very interesting system and so his young players. Ted young players at talented bizarre. Still don't know what they don't know so this is a great scheduling move by tattoo. Have this exhibition. Game against a veteran lower level teams gonna come up here and not care who the comedy. Buffalo's i don't care. How regarded recruiting classiest looking to come and play really hard with a chip on their shoulder and wanna prove something against the higher levels. And so it's a great test. I think a great learning experience for testing tonight now looking forward to that. "We're live from the auto collision specialist studios joining us now on our i advantage hotline the voice of the colorado buffaloes mark johnson. Mark my friend. I don't care how bad the buffs are. It's always great catching up with you. Well good good. Do you know what we got. An exhibition basketball game here tonight. So let's just talk about that. Let's talk about that. I'm excited man. I mean i will ask you a couple of questions about the football side of it. We'll get through it together. But the basketball side. I mean when you have tad boyle as the head coach. It doesn't matter. If the mckinley writes of the world move on and again a great player tad just continues to find ways to make his basketball team productive and already in the you know the preseason rankings i was looking at. Espn the other day. Just looking at march madness predictions. The buffs are picked to go dancing. Yeah they got them. Ever receiving votes in the preseason. I people you know what ten is done is done. It's it's he's done something in this day and age that a lot of people don't have the patience for it. I came in and started out his career. Her obviously doing very well You know your number two winning right yeah. Pac twelve championship and his first year of the pack. Twelve second year of the program. But what he's done he's built this thing the correct way and you need patience for that at times. We've talked about on the show. Remember people that over the years. We just found new coach and kept saying. You don't know what you're talking about. This guy is the guy. He's building at the right way. He's putting a foundation on it. There's a culture that's been built here. He's done it a certain way. There's a system. There's an expectation He doesn't build this program on transfers. He does recruiting guys developing them. Look all the guys that are in the nba. Right now and so. He's done a phenomenal job of building. That and everyone knows. Colorado basketball is as an identity and rebounds it plays defense It develops guys. It's got great guard. Play over the years and so hence when guys like mckinley right who goes down the all time. Great here greater cd when they lead. You don't have to go and rebuild your reload. And had i think he's gotten into his point at that point in his career now where that's kind of what he's doing and it's fun to watch so mark. Tell us a little bit about what you expect. You know who stands out to you on the roster what fully. What are you fully expect from this from this program to be pretty competitive in the pac twelve. I'm guessing then right. Well i think so i question. I think it'll be one of the top teams everyone's talking but ucla and rightly so they went to the final four last year. A very good team and return essentially everybody. But you know evan bad. He's going to be the rock in the middle. That's going to be the upper class and they're going to build. I think what we saw last year from some of the young guys Is is really going to be fun to watch them. Develop because there is so much youth on this team but keep an eye on tristen dasilva and that's the guy that i don't think a lot of people talk about that. I think is going to be a phenomenal piece of the puzzle and he highly field. He sticks for tanis gained some weight in the white room. Now he can play the three. You can play the four. He can play the five. I think he'd probably the to the had to At different times but he is highly skilled. he's got a high basketball iq. he's just like his brother was at stanford during out to be a phenomenal player. I think he's a guy that's really going to be special. But it's also talking to mark. Johnson the voice of the colorado buffaloes how do you think the pac twelve in general i mean. We talked about the football side of it all day. But you look at basketball. I mean it should be a strong group as far as like those top five or six teams. I think so i mean. Ucla we just mentioned colorado is going to be in the mix there. I think you know oregon. The what they do up there in the way that they kinda rebuild that thing just got a restocking when they go and final the transfers and everything. I think they're going to be a very solid team i think. Us's going to be very solid as well. I think they're going to be in the top half of this league and so you know arizona's going to be there. I know there's been had a coaching change and they had some turmoil there. But it's still arizona for goodness sake so you know right off the top of your head. There's five or six programs are going to be in the mix nist and so. I think it's going to be a very strong basketball year for for the pac twelve. And and they're gonna need that because seen football is not been great. Obviously this fall. I think i think buffs fans are ready to turn that page and get into some basketball But on the football side of things well there was some movement you know. We're talking about the the broncos on the other hand you'll saying hey are they gonna make any changes. Is that coming. Well here we go the buffs just cannot get anything really going offensively consistently and carl moved on from his offensive line coach. Yeah he did. That was a total surprise. I think if you were watching you kind of cigarette that you know that was probably going to be one of the shoes drops with this thing. Now what difference does that make in the middle of the season. I don't know. I guess the proof will be in the pudding kind of moving forward and we'll see what happens there but i don't know how much that can really greatly affect anything you know with five games remaining at a season so I'm sure there will be some. I mean they'll change a few things and you know. Sometimes there's a little bit of a spark energy wise. You know what happens when you make a move like that so not not a total surprise but you know. I thought it was interesting on monday. When i asked about further changes and he said everything is being evaluated and i'm at around his game long enough that means they are. They are turning every rock over there looking at everything and probably in a cage. That's not the end of changes forthcoming. Now they're going to do something else here in the middle of the season. I don't think so. I think whatever may come next. We'll probably come after the season. But you know it's it's one one chess move if you will in a game Moving forward for curled arousal. My guess is probably not the last one you know. Does that mean that You know mitch road regal. I like very much was the problem. So might have been a contributing factor to what you know what we've been seeing in the field and so that's kind of the way i look at it. It is always interesting to see you know when you see a position or a side of the football at the office side the defensive side to see if there is a move and wear that move goes okay. We're pointing at the offensive line. That seems to be the issue but from from your standpoint mark i mean it seems like yeah we could talk about brennan lewis too but what are you seeing on the offensive side of the ball. I thought maybe for after a couple of weeks ago. Maybe we're going to open this thing up with arizona. I know special teams was great. But my goodness you finally saw the offense go so i thought confidence is coming in and then you put up three against cal. You know. there's a line. I've heard gary that using thousand broadcast you don't make a straight line out of one one or two points. There's gotta be three points and so you had one game where things look better. And it's a sign of optimism without happened. I didn't think to myself. Oh this thing is fix that. Okay now we got to see if there's another one and then you look for that but the third one row. Do you got for three weeks in a if you see some approval. You're gonna okay. We saw something there. I think what we saw against arizona was yeah sure. They tried a few things out there and he had a young quarterback taking place. I thought the offense line held up relatively well. But you know in hindsight now that was a blip one week last week certainly. They didn't play the same level and so It's yeah you look for look for a series of those kind of things. I'll look for one or two and at this point like i said the middle of the season. I'm not sure how much you can actually change that. Now by the way curl just had a little press briefing here a little while ago At the inner practices all the right now in fact said that made it's not gonna be to switch and listen that's not a good thing for colorado playing a team like oregon because that guy is such an enormous Enormously important part of what they do defensively and overall for that team that that's an enormous loss for colorado having not having ever fifty three out this weekend boy that's a. That's a tough one. No question is going to be a tall tall task. Anyway you got top offset what seven in the in the country and oregon's teams rolling and it could get ugly this week of like you said we got basketball marks so we can at least look at the positive side. They're and i tell you what this is going to be a great test. I don't think that you know when you look at Excuse me. Ken will's team. I think they are extremely talented. And i think tonight's could be a very good test for a young team because school of mines is a very very good division. Toubro just won't even the great mark johnson. Can you have one hundred hundred to throw up.

"I think that. That's we're waiting on and carl talked about being more involved at the offensive side You know this week and he. I know he's talked with the team about that. Getting himself in there and getting as creative as you possibly can. But yeah there's gotta be some movement there because you know when you end up with minors nineteen rushing yards and double digits and total offense. That just ain't gonna. I don't care if you've got the defense of the eighty five bears out there that ain't gonna cut it not gonna win many ball games and you can't exist that way because it's too much pressure on one out of the ball mark. Give us some details far less hours. Listening to you on saturday loved it and like you said i could feel yeah heavy lifting for sure to get through but always a pleasure to listen to you my friend this weekend. The late one You better get yourself a nap man because he kicks off at eight thirty mountain time. We're going to have the air of the college football network and you know the various ways and sirius. Xm the farsi network. Look this up I think it's like a high of one hundred seven on saturday at by kick on the thirty is supposed to be like one hundred one so at least cooling off cooling. I mean it's like you're You know it's like you're in alaska at that point there the dry heat other coming to you. Mark appreciate to man good luck. I don't know. I feel like we're going to have a change so far every single week in our with our local teams. Here's something to complete opposite happens that i predict so i'm gonna predict the buffs to struggle and then good things are going to happen. I think that that's my new. My new calling. So we'll see hope you're right. I'm hoping for the best like everybody else involved nation this week. It's all right my friend. We'll talk to you soon. "Hey everybody this is former ceus. You running back kyle bell and you are listening to my main man brady whole on the whole show. Do not turn your dial. Keep it right here joining me now on our i advantage. Hotline is the voice of the colorado. Buffaloes mark johnson. Mark my friend this this game over the weekend boy. That was interesting. Felt like it was thirteen. Nothing for eight years and suddenly something happened with minnesota. They end up winning this thing. Thirty two nothing. I couldn't believe the final score. Well interesting so nice way pulling it was that that was heavy lifting on saturday broadcasting. A game like that. Yeah and i'll be honest with you brady. I mean i said it's broadcast. I didn't see that coming. I i did not see. I didn't there was nothing that indicated that now Was i totally surprised about. Offense was not spectacular. No that we've seen that through two weeks. The offense has been a work in progress. Let's put it that way. What i didn't see was having nineteen minus nineteen yards rushing into that ballgame having single-digit yardage at halftime. That's what i did say now. What happens in the ball game like that when your offense is not doing its job and then you hang defense out and you talked about being thirteen nothing and the fact that late with a minute left in the third quarter it was still thirteen. Nothing is remarkable. The fact that comedy we still in that ballgame that late in the game and having done zero on the offense aside which shows you how well the defense is playing. I got messages after the game. You know ribbon the defense and you know the way it works when the team gets like that. Everyone stanks somebody offense. Thanks to deep defense. Thanks announcers thank everybody. Snacks and and You know i. I responded to the folks just know. That's not a fair assessment. That defense was on the field on a very hot day. It's forty one minutes that ballgame and kept that game where it was and then finally into the fourth quarter you know finally gave up some plays and giving up thirty points and four hundred forty yards. So i'm not gonna figure that defense now coaches will you know. They'll they'll play with their team. Hey gotta be better than we understand that. But if the offense for colorado went out and that ballgame and just was moderately good..

"Because he's had novel camp which you would like to have seen that competition continue out and and see who actually ends up winning the job and and so now. They're they're all in the louis. Obviously we feel very bad for jt. Shrout i'm sure he'll have surgery here in the not too distant future but very tough luck. Yeah i've really unfortunate there be thinking about that guy for sure and well and it also brings up the same noyer thing mark. I mean you're looking. We'll sam transferred out and it made sense. I suppose right but now i know buffs fans looking at tackle man. It'd be nice to at least have some more insurance. They're really would because what you've got behind two guys by the way that already were young quarterbacks and essentially their second seasons. Njit's round brenda lewis. You've got to true freshman. Andrew carter is now the backup. He's a kid from the northwest part of the country and was relatively highly regarded kid. And i think there's something there but you know he was kinda looking at two thousand twenty one. I'm gonna come on. And i'm going to give it a shot. I'm going to kind of learn the ropes. And things a little bit and then next year is when you really kinda count on a guy like that all of a sudden now and carlton all sitting having practice so after practice the other days looking. You do understand how you're one play away for being a started this football team and still you know that reality hits you gotta smack between the is. You're pretty quick and simple like that so you know. They're encouraging him. He's he's got talent but you know they're freshman and so and now he's trying to figure it out and they're like okay. Now you gotta buckle down. You got to really make sure you're preparing every week. 'cause you're right you're the next step of being the starting quarterback and so it it does put them mcaddo opaque precarious position You know now one thing that also changes brady is the pitch count in practice. I mean you had. I mean not. Now you're putting a lot of throws and the lewis now. It's good that he gets them. But now drew. Carter is gonna mix in with the number one of course is to give brenda lewis a break every once in a while and so that changes things. Your receiver catching footballs. And there's a lot of different things that they get affected by this and now they're short on having another practice. I've wondered a little bit and nobody said anything about this matt lynch shoes a tight end. Who was a colorado kid. Pretty good quarterback went to. Ucla then became a tight end..

"It's getting to be a wild time and watching all these playoff games. Avs back added tonight. So we'll see that that game's got a lot of intrigue or that series. It's got a lot of intrigue to it as well News poured out nationally boston. Celtics president danny aines retires coach. Brad stevens takes over as the as the president. So now they're looking out for the next head coach and a former colorado buffalo chauncey billips name coming up as one of the top perhaps contenders to take that job. Mark johnson the voice of the colorado buffaloes joining us and mark. I know you weren't calling gains. Chauncey was there but you certainly know buffs history more so than perhaps anybody. How do you think he'd fair as as a head coach in the nba. Well well he's. He's a sharp guy. Obviously he knows play basketball and one thing. That's kind of interesting brady about what's happening in particular in the nba. Is we have seen a shift. Where coaches came from the coaching ladder. You started out as a student manager many cases or a director of basketball operations. You did a lot of scouting then. You got yourself into assistant coaching and you moved down. That's kinda changed in recent years. Where guys are getting jobs. That don't necessarily have a long resume of of coaching in the nba. And so you're seeing that more frequently and so I listen. I think trance be obviously knows the game very well and he's got phenomenal instincts in the game of basketball. That's why he was such a fantastic player. And so i think he'd fare very well. In that regard he's got in connection with some of the players on that celtics roster and so. I think there might be a pretty good chance. He's been rumored now the last really year year and a half is being a guy that was being looked at and prepared to be a head coach and so. I think it'll probably happen pretty soon. And what do you think about. Like i always think mark great passers excellent point guards floor generals however you want to our. Do you want to call it. I always think those is in again. That's based on zero knowledge of what they might do as a coach. But just if you're on the outside looking in. I always think those kind of players floor generals would be kind of an easy transition to the head coach mode. Well yeah. I think they understand the game you know. It's like an in baseball for example. If you ever noticed that that catchers many times make very good managers become in the game of baseball. They're the guys that are working with the pitchers there watching the defense. They're the ones that are really thinking. The game baseball more than the guy who's out in centerfield or playing third base. Whatever it might be In basketball the point guards guy that does that..

"I'm not sure what that means. But we expect to be back in the road Stadiums in the road broadcast bush with the ball game. Yes i first. Road game will be against arizona state and we were talking a little bit last week too about the pac twelve as a whole with the new commissioner and everything. This'll be very. I think pressure filled the entire conference. Mark that those first few games outside of conference you know if you're pac twelve fan. You really rooting for some sexy success. There at the beginning of the no doubt about it. Second down and you you can somebody. I don't know. I got all these games right but i know there's a matchup with how state i think that weekend There's two notre dame game is coming up shortly within the conference. There's there's some maybe three or four real high profile games. Two or three of them are happening that weekend. It's so very early on listeners. Always optimism. But i think there's reasons look around his conference and think okay. Oregon looks like it could be very strong. arizona state. Looks like it could be very strong. People are hopefully. Usc is making a comeback. Something at stanford will make a proven over a year ago. And so i think there's a little bit of optimism in the league at some hope that they could show well in that second weekend where those marquee games are happening. Because you know if if the league doesn't show well that weekend by laying let's say let's say they go for four high profile games. They for everyone around the country's gonna say it's the same old pac twelve and so you've got to go out and win some of those ball games to the perception of the resume and get people back on ford to the factbook belong to that Upper level conversation. Yeah no question about a man. There's this has turned the page and we started to get back to normal. We can get back to our regular you know just looking at the pressure on the individual teams on the conference a whole and i cannot wait to follow that along with your market way too early. But we're doing like our late may prediction. So we're having some fun. Just looking around at the schedules today after last year. It's never too early to jump into it. Just start speculating. Let's be honest for the most part that's all we've had the last fourteen bucks so Now that we've got something on the horizon and really looking forward to offer recovered into it and talking about it analyzing it and trying to figure out what if you look at because i think we just lost mark we were up anyway. "Up finding the coffee somehow. Colfax we retrace our steps and a little detective work and you were able to find is in. The basement is in the base. I don't know how it got down there places. Creepy radio station basement is weird place. So weird stuff from ages gone past. We apparently do believe in throwing anything away here. Nobody throws anything away. No mark johnson. Pry tell us about that working in the radio. Bismarck shots and the voice of the colorado box is that is the case with most most radio stations. Nobody throws things away here. No no because you never know what you're gonna use eight track tape every trick now that that copy of fog hat from nineteen seventy six eight zero with a formats going to change you bring that went back and it's like we're all like american pickers around here man. We don't wanna part with any of our stuff just a weird people that have baseman props all over the country I frequently when i got to new place. I was working my way up the ladder. I went through a number of different markets. I would go into you know the shutout back or the basement or wherever that area was that radio station i picked up some pretty cool stuff over the course of time because i walk up at some point after a while i'd walk up to the engineer and say hey we're looking at us announced it taken out of here. You get a lot of just laying down there so pretty cool stuff over the years. Hey you're welcome to pop by here at the station mark and i can't imagine you're in a fight anything but who knows maybe you dig up all right mark i. It takes me a while to figure things out here. I'm just trying to see this. I'm looking at the standings. In the pac twelve the buffs have been rolling since that cow loss. I know the oregon game. But they find ways to be usc ucla. Do they still have a shot to win the regular season title. They do. I mean it would be simpler for me at this point. I think to Described you know fifth level geometry. And whatever. i mean calculus. I e they still have a shot but it takes an enormous amount of health. And so i think you're colorado right now you're thirteen and six pick up the win tomorrow night against arizona state your fourteen and six i think they they probably are going to finish third my guest by the time it's all said and done but there. There is a combination out there of usc oregon and ucla winning losing against each other. That would work in the bus favor and actually giving them the championship but I i tell you what. I've got a better. The odds are better. If i go buy a ticket for the lottery tonight in that to happen. So that's that's not it would be for colorado. Well let's crazy is yes. It could be a long shot but a week ago. Mark two weeks ago. I'm thinking well that's ed. They lost to cal. And then they lost oregon. They don't have a shot. We're not even gonna be in this discussion but with one game left you're at least talking about it and ultimately it matters what you do in the pac twelve tournament but still still the fact that we're talking about them finishing no worse than fourth in the pac twelve pretty phenomenal the way. This team bounced back after the cow loss..

I actually feel a little bit more like i could take on the world. Even though i'm in the you know the cozy confines of my my couch. So i all the time. I don't have a lot of right answers. I just got a lotta wrong with everybody. Because i i if you pick a topic i've screwed it up at subway performance that's I've always figured that the the The negative of being active all the time. Because you're gonna screw up a lot. So i've done that a lot of wrong. I love it man. I said one of these days. I'm gonna come out there. I'm going to help you with the project. i'm not sure when i'm not sure. How but one of these days mark okay. So last week you. And i were talking about this washington game and i've been talking about this since you and i chatted after the loss. You said something before that game you said washington's do good to have this record. I don't know what's happened. I think they have the roster. They certainly have the coaching staff. My fears. you know. They're going to get that chemistry going. It's going to happen against the buffs and it kind of looks like that's exactly what happened last week. You know anytime and listen when you're in this business. As long as i've been any begin to evaluate teams evaluate rosters. Kind of talent they've got on the roster and it was a we know that that sometimes even talented rosters have issues in which they lose games. I mean look at the buffaloes lions here but that five game losing streak at the end of the season i mean holy cow you you're scratching your head. What is going on here. They were one of the better teams in america for much of the season and so i looked at that washington team and they had and what kind of channel they had looked at their numbers..

What is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier all about?

"You're listening to the how in the world podcast we unravel some of the planet's most perplexing questions about ten minutes. Nope we're not scientists or scholars. We're just normal. People like to figure things out. Sometimes inspiring sometimes informative. Our topics are always fascinating hosted by me mark johnson and my lovely wife me holly johnson. We do the research. So you don't have to veterans day. Twenty twenty was last week and we were watching the ceremony on tv where. The president laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. And i had so many so boom. That's how ideas for episodes are born in fact we've had a bunch of ideas recently. I'm not sure what that means. Maybe we've been watching too much. Tv or something. Well have been a lot of events and things going on and questions. Raise like veterans day and christmas. Coming in the spacex mission to the international space station and like our seventh grader pete. Yeah he's just a few good questions lately. And i've got all them in my notes so we'll get to them but before we get to today's episode. I have to mention my favorite veteran dad. Although he passed away ten years ago. I think of every day. He was my hero the very best dad ever in the world. No offence sweetie men take. He was a great guy he was. He had a really interesting time. While in the army. Interesting about the only word. I could come up with their first as a model for army promotional posters literally a poster boy then as a member of general macarthur's honor guard where he hung out with the general and his wife watching movies every friday night. That was a very cush job. But then crap got real when he became a forward observer in the korean war. That's the guy who's part of a team of three who go ahead of the rest of the group in radio back until then where the enemy lines are and stuff. It's a very dangerous job. Maybe the most dangerous in the military at that time yes indeed but he came home then and he met my mom and they had me. Yea so thanks for indulging me a moment to recognize him. Okay let's get to it. I the basics. The tomb of the unknown soldier is in arlington national cemetery and strangely enough. I've never been there. I know the air and space museum. So well i could give tours. But we never went to arlington national. I'm i'm ashamed really. You're mad my school for never taking us there. I don't know but we we've got to do this on our own. We definitely will. The tomb actually contains and unknown soldier from world war. One who was buried ride underneath a memorial which is made of marble like everything in dc tomorrow and the city. It has six wreaths carved into the sides three on the opposite two sides that represent the six major campaigns of world war one on the third side. There are three. Greek figures carved these figures represent peace victory in valor and on the fourth side contains the inscription here rests in honored glory in american soldier known but to god. That's just beautiful. The memorial also referred to as tomb of the unknowns actually has no official name president. Warren g harding officiated the ceremony. That laid this first soldier to rest on veterans day november eleventh nineteen twenty one the tomb of the unknowns generally refers to four tombs world war one world war two korea and vietnam. Three other soldiers were interred in tombs. Right beside the memorial. Those unknown soldiers represent world war two korea and vietnam although the soldier representing the vietnam war was removed once. Dna analysis identified him and he was returned to his family in nineteen ninety eight. He'd only been there like four years or something. The vietnam tomb now intentionally remains empty and is a monument. Honoring all of america's missing servicemen and. Women that's awesome. Yeah one of the questions. I've always had about the tomb of the unknowns. Is how they got the soldier so there's not just one unknown soldier in a war right. I mean. aren't there many. They're just one. And how did they choose this one who would be buried there and where are the rest so tell us about that. Honey yes. That's a great question that i've had to which means probably a lot of you have wondered about it as well for the first memorial. The the world war one memorial they uninsured four soldiers that had been buried in france. They put each in an identical casket and then a decorated wounded. Combat soldier made the choice from these four identical caskets at a city hall in france. He chose the third from the left. And signified is choice by laying white roses on top of that casket. That's the soldier who is in the tomb in dc. The other three were reinterred in france. That's the process that's been used to select the unknown for each tomb and yes there are plenty of unknowns. Buried all over the world.

How does the Electoral College work?

"This week's episode answers the question. How in the world does the electoral college pick our president. You're listening to the how in the world podcast we're we unravel some of the planet's most perplexing questions in just about ten minutes nope we're not scientists or scholars. We're just normal people who like to figure things out. Sometimes inspiring sometimes informative. Our topics are always fascinating hosted by me mark johnson and my lovely wife me holly johnson. We do the research so you don't have to well. Today is thursday november fifth twenty twenty. And it's been a quiet couple of days around here in the. Us assure was there was something on tv to incessantly. Watch and keep checking my phone about What could that possibly be wrong. Oh how about the twenty twenty elections. It's been a wild couple of days folks in it. Looks like it could be wild for a bit longer. So let's all practice are deep breathing and relaxation methods together. Bring your popcorn as the time that we're recording this. I believe the elections come down to maybe four states that haven't yet counted all of their votes but once they're done it's still not over no not even close because once all the votes are counted will know what the results of the popular vote are. But we won't officially know yet. Who won this election. And that's because not only will there be a ton of lawsuits than we unto way through but also because we don't elect our president based on the popular. Vote like you would in the classroom election elementary school. We use the electoral college. And i've always been a little foggy about the electoral college. So i'm glad recovering this today because it forced me to dig deeper really kind of learn about it or you could have just asked your wife who by the way is a political scientist by education. You know yeah. I've been told that. Before so i get a little invested in presidential elections and the preceding debates and political discussion. So what it's fascinating and also frustrating and maddening and kinda stupid also but so fascinating the strategy. He's not even close anyway. Let's talk about the electoral college. Yup that's why we're here. So let's do it and by the way we're going to refrain from any partisan right discussion. This is just about the electoral college. You won't know who we voted for. So for starters you know how annoying all of those census ads and like postcard mailers and mail and information and more ads and everything was reminding us. How important is that we fill out our census form so that everyone is counted yet. And i remember seeing a ton about the census recently. But i believe you filled out the form. Since you're our families designated form filler outer am. I joined it because again i am a political scientist so data and surveys and stuff like that matters anyway. The census is used to determine a lot of things most notably funding to your state for certain services. So if you have a disproportionate number of school aged kids for example it tells the. Us government that you'll need a disproportionate amount of funding for schools. I mean that's really dumbing. It down but funding is a biggie. And doesn't also tell you how many representatives you'll get in the. Us house it does so every state gets two senators so there are a total of one hundred senators in the us senate but representatives are totally different because their allocated based on the census count. Yes they are. There's always four hundred and thirty five of them. No more no less. But how they're allocated can change. So if everyone emptied out of california which currently has fifty three districts and therefore fifty-three representatives and moved to wyoming which currently has just one representative. Those numbers would turn on their head. And by the way. Alaska delaware montana and north and south dakota and also vermont have just one representative yes and there are also some non voting delegates in the hell. They can do everything. The voting members can do except vote. Hence the name right. They can introduce bills and participate in committees Currently there is a delegate representing washington. Dc as well as one each for puerto rico. American samoa guam the northern mariana islands. And the us virgin islands. They're also talking about adding a delegate from the cherokee nation and from the choctaw nation which is super cool. Yeah it really is. And the senate and house together are called congress and there are a total of five hundred thirty five members of congress. So that's that hundred senators and the four hundred and thirty five representatives. Each state has the same number of electoral college votes. That they have congressmen or women which means each state has a minimum of three electoral college members. Two senators one representative three so for the the smaller less populated states. They're still going to have three electoral college members.

"And a good leader inspires. A good leader gives hope and purpose for the organization for their group of people. How do you do that well. You know the big way to do that. is you. Create a vision for organization. You create a vision for your people. And i would say in the middle of a crisis. Yes you've got all these things that you like. You said you can't even look past the next couple of days but on the other side of it. People are hurting. People are wondering where things are going to shake out. And so you know we've gotta be able to kind of like holding onto the iron rod. We gotta give him the path. We got a late in so actually vision almost becomes more important than ever. It doesn't mean you have to spend all your time developing the vision right. I mean you kind of develop the vision and then you work that back to what. What does that mean. We're going to have our north star. We're not gonna get buffeted all over the place. We know where we're heading first and foremost with the gospel. We know were heading but we know were heading. You know kind of in this. Temporal way through the vision we set. That's in keeping with the gospel but then we need to that. We need to get to well. How are we gonna make it to their especially with all this crisis going on so it gives you an opportunity to again. Make sure that you're not doing all these urgent things at the expense of. Maybe there's some vital things you're not thinking about that are gonna creep up twelve to eighteen months from now that you actually should be planning now about to anticipate them coming to fruition. You know there's the great sports analogy are quote from. You know that wayne. Gretzky the canadian hockey player. He didn't skate to where the puck was. He skated to where the puck was going. You know and i think there has to be some of that even in the middle of crisis you have to say we know where we're going. I mean we may not perfectly know where we're going but we roughly no are going and whether there's a pandemic or not doesn't change where we're we're heading so we have to do some of that planning and we have to have that northstar in place because otherwise were were just like you said we're completely reacting in an all that reaction you know. I think can kinda come some on of dangers of giving up or feeling like you're never gonna make it or just not getting hopeful. So you didn't that hopeful north star and and really what i've learned from you today. Is that when something like this happens. You know crisis or disruption like this. It's easy to think what we have to rethink our vision. But it's just the the narrative or context that changed and that doesn't mean you have to change your your vision but you need needed. Consider changing your strategy right. Exactly how you're going to get there might have to change. Yeah that's really helpful. We'll martin anything else. We haven't covered her now. This is great. I appreciate you me on yeah. No it's been fun so if people do want to learn more about your book. And i haven't been a good host of mentioning but lead from the future to turn visionary thinking to break breakthrough growth. Where if they want to learn more about the booker you where would you send him while one is you know we have some background on the book future back. Leadership dot com all one word or think. The books available on amazon amazon dot com. And you know you could email me. Also directly at a. m. johnson insight dot com awesome. Well this has been fantastic and and the last question remark is as you consider your time sort of being having a lifelong career as a student of leadership and being a leader. How is being a leader in that field. Made you better disciple or follower of jesus. Christ i think the biggest ways it's giving me the ability to think what really it allows me to think more with perspective right to not let too much what's happening now. Get me down that there's a. There's a longer term horizon about that just like you know. We say that this is a fairly short part of our eternal journey so being able to think in that longer term time dimension just helps i think me personally you know in. It's not something that. I i still have to practice it. But but you know make this separation about what's really urgent versus what's really vital. And you know not over indexing too much on today because we have to be kind of looking onward and upward ripe which is really what the gospel is all about. That concludes my interview with mark johnson. A big shout to him and so grateful for him bringing his His knowledge and perspective to this podcast and talking about these principles in the context of being a church leader and again thank you to jane. Clayson johnson is well for the interview. She did a year ago or so. If you haven't listened that one it'd be fun to Also look that one up. Maybe we will link to it in the show notes here and Be phenomenal stuff that Jane is working on as well as you can see. This is a power couple right. And i know they'll do great things both in and out of the church in massachusetts. Would you do me a favor and take a this link. Or maybe the linked to another interview on the leading saint podcasts. Just drop it in email or text and send to somebody. If there's any way that this podcast gets promoted it's through word of mouth through sharing and texting and emailing and so if you've been prompted to share this with somebody i hope you will that. That'd be awesome. We really appreciate and a great way for us to grow and continue our mission. Forward of helping latter-day saints be better prepared to lead and remind you once again to text. "Online now without the opportunity. What direction can things go now? I'm not doing anybody to future. I'm just saying there's possibility out there that without that little leg up now the sudden you're affecting lives in a different way so I think it's fascinating, just looking at kind of like thirty thousand foot view of this entire thing. It's really start looking at were the. The ripple effects are yeah I mean on the prep sight of it to mark Johnson joining us the voice of the Colorado buffs you you look at the website i. saw guy, great friend of the stations Kevin Schafer posted on his preps radio network on Colorado's preps twitter and said Hey, there's a lot of kids in this area in the state in this country. That might reconsider staying in school if they can't play football. He can't play basketball I know that sounds strange, but I know a lot of people in my class growing up. That said Yeah I mean honestly. I, know exactly what I'm GonNa do the moment I graduate. I'm going to go work for my Dataman help. Run his business I'm going to work on the rigs. I'm going to get a farm. But I'M GONNA. Stay just so I can play football for one year and most of them say the same thing. I'm glad I did it. Oh that's. That's an enormous part of this. You know you and I haven't even touched on. The. Mental Health Issues I mean the suicides and Drugs and alcohol, which we already are going through the roof and and depression all these kind of things, so it's really it's I, know we can get emotional about a number that we see every day, and it's lives lost, and I understand that enters truth and every single comment made about that. That's not the only story that extra story at five feet go to thirty thousand feet, and start looking at this and really look at the broad picture on what's being affected out there, and then let's start looking at the real science. The raw data out what's happened again in Florida with all the garbage goes down there right now. Now, but let's look at the real stuff. Let's take all of that Info. We can get from countries all over the world sedans. Okay, what are we dealing with? And what is the now? There's probably going to be paying no matter what direction we go at and anybody. He's living life. No matter what your tough circumstance is, you look for the most efficient, the past panther go, and and maybe in the least painful want to go now I understand, but we're all gonNa have some suffering in some form or fashion going through this, but what's what's the smartest avenue? Advises Avenue to take, and then take that and then find ourselves on the other side of this, but. I know there's no easy answers I'm not saying there are just saying that this is a problem with that I'm not sure we're taking the proper large big picture view of times. Yeah I. Mean There's guys. I disagree with politically big time that actually come back and say hey. We can't be in a world where we just crawl into our are caves, and that's where we are a year and that, and that goes not just on the sports scene, but that goes in the business world as well, and that's at the end of the day. What what I fear is, are we just going to hope that it goes away by locking ourselves up and that's I don't think that's realistic either mark. You mentioned all before in here shown and you deal with them on a daily basis on the streets of Greeley. The books that you deal with the mom and pops out there that have got businesses. You know there's a life blood that that that helps them navigate and run those businesses right? That's true on a national scale is true on a global scale and when you cut that off, if we're just to walk and again are caves and sit there and wait, that lifeblood is cut off. You can't plug up. Our mouths and noses live expanded oxygen businesses, which one our lives there and help us then supply. Thanks for our lives also cannot have the oxygen cut off for any. Any period of time and exist and I think that's an important thing to think about because I. I know people always want to make them today through that comment. Oh, you're! You're equating lives with money. None of them I'm equating lives with lives here. Because ultimately on that financial side lives. You're going to be affected lives. You're going to be lost and you know that Dan is to be considered at least in the entire picture. This issue as well couldn't agree more. My friend as always well said by you and we'll see what happens next week. I'm sure a whole plate of new items will be on on the docket for us to discuss I just want to get back to. I know man. "The new movie the outpost. It was the most downloaded film of the weekend, and it's an immersive experience. It's about an outpost in Afghanistan at the base of this valley. If you're just joining us, it was sort of a bizarre placement of this base. But what happened was there was a Taliban insurgency of massive proportion and the director of the film Rob Gloria's is talking with us. This was a true incident. It was chronicled in a book by Jake Tapper, and then you brought it to the screen. Yeah. Jake Tapper released that best selling book in 2012. It was great. You know, when I When I first time out to do it, I called Jake up and, you know, he just wants to talk movies. So I want to do is talk about politics. So we sort of have to divvy it up every time that way. Have a conversation just because you mentioned politics I want tojust also know this is not a political film at all. I mean, really like there's no, no, it's not Pro War antiwar, pro GOP Anti GOP Pro Democrats. Cetera. There's none of that. No, it's about it's about. We really focus on the eight dudes of lost our lives and the two living member to living survivors. By definition, They're living survivors who received the Medal of Honor. One is Ty Carter, played by Caleb Landry, Jones and the other Is Scott Eastwood on DH. He plays staff Sergeant Clint Roma Shay and And that's really worried for what it really is A chronicle of what happened in the battle and sort of the events that led up to it. I would tell you more than anything else. And you know you've got Orlando Bloom and it also it's funny that one should you know, Should you give everybody best haircut and the you know basic Army. Whatever that, you know, Whatever you call it, you lose track. I guess I'm trying to say of any celebrity in it all. It's all very immersive. How did you know that was clearly a desire on your part, too? You know these battle sequences and just the feeling over time is that we're actually there at the outpost. Well, you know, the one of the things that I did mark is that I shot most of most of the film every scene in one long tape in the battle sequences, things on these long, I think really fluid takes And so you know, there's you don't think you're in a movie. I don't think you don't see cutaways. You don't see You know Scotty's would shooting his weapon and then cut a bad guy going down. It's you know, it's all in the long fluid. Um, uh, shots and as a result, I think that you're you're deeply embedded in every scene. At least that's what we were. That's what we're going for. Well, All the reviews were saying the exact same thing isn't very well reviewed film. But I have to ask you, though, from a filmmaker's pinpoint as you're doing that all in one continuous shot. You have all of these things got here got bullets everywhere and you got stuff blowing up and you've got, you know, guys running this way and other people running that way and people climbing over, you know, I mean, there's a lot to choreographing end in one of those things doesn't happen. You gotta retake it again. Oh, so like, you know, that's exactly right. So we've got special effects. I mean, you already laid it all out on the special effects the actress to get it right. And I remember there was this one really, really magnificent Take That we did, and kid Landry Jones, who zeal just hauling ass hundreds of yards, and we're following in the hallway with the, uh you know this one camera and the camera operators exhausted when it's all done, but everyone we nailed it and everybody's cheering and high fiving and tight. Carter. The actual Medal of Honor winner is there and he's hugging and crying, and you got it exactly right and then our military experts Guy named Jericho Dem and comes up and says, No, no, no, no, no, You've got it all wrong. No, no, It's a mess back guy that I was holding his weapon like that doesn't look like one explosion. Supposed to look like I said them. Come on, man. It's a movie was okay. Well, if you want every military guy in America and the world elastic find, Okay. Let it all up again and do it again, You know, And that is the thing you you have to be loyal to story and also to the look of the film as He said before the break. You know you are connected to the military sort of in your own personal history. And obviously a lot of military people looking on this movie. Well, well, you know we've gotten look, I wrote an article today in the deadline and what I said was, it's really difficult to know the metrics of success are But to me how the veterans have reacted to this has been like, unbelievable. And and you know what Marc, also how the families of fallen reacted to this. That was really freaking way. Show them this movie last October, we flew them in the moms and the dads and the brothers and the You know the wives and the kids, and we don't know what they're gonna say after work, you know? The actual soldiers that were there, looking at the worst day of their lives depicted on screen. And these families are looking at their loved ones dying on screen. You know, a couple of people afterwards and you know, I I didn't realize they swore so much. Ah, but there was really in the end, very gracious. And they hugged us and they loved us because you know they're They're boys. They're men and their sons there. They're going to be remembered forever now and You know, That's not something every soldier gets. So you know, I know it sounds corny, more But you know, having been a soldier that is really it was really, really important to all of us. I think it's happened. The capper was a wreck that night, and it's really interesting to watch it because that guy's such a cool cookie when he's interviewing generals and senators and governors and ripping them new ones, and you know who he is, But you know, on a night like this It was a flop Sweating. So was so was I, but it was It was pretty amazing night. I mean, you have to. You really are trying to honor the memory of people and you're trying to honor those who fought so valiantly and the movie, I think does that with, you know, without knowing the history as deeply as you do, Obviously, I just I was riveted by it, and I think it's powerful, both emotionally and in every other way. The movie is called the Outpost. Rod Lurie is the director. It's got Orlando Bloom's got Eastwood mentioned Caleb Lander Jones as well, but it really transcends any kind of one performance. I think it's really one of those films that I was blown away by. So congratulations. Really nice job, Rod. Thank you, Marc. I I really really appreciate appreciate it. it. "We'll have the voice of the buffs Mark Johnson on the program here in just a moment talk to him about wh- what see you will look like next year. What a weird end to that to that team. There is such a great basketball team. You know from day one we talked about. Wow even their five guys off the bench probably be starting for top teams in the country and they they moved up got up to the top twenty five most of the year. I think they got US high up to sixteen. I want to say maybe even higher than that they were leading the pack twelve for a good chunk beat Oregon. Then they lose to Oregon. They had an opportunity again and then then they dropped their last six games or so their last five games in the regular season and then they lost to to Washington state in the first round of the PAC twelve tournament which we did get to that. Not a lot of the conference tournaments. Were able to start you know league in the case for. Unc didn't get to the second round because they had they got the second round by the bears didn't make the rams finished their tournament because it was the week before they finish the mountain. West Conference Tournament. But see you go ahead and end it so they did play one game and I bet you they wished Things have been called off like you know twenty four hours earlier. I have intersex line. Three one nine nine six before break. Let me tell you another sponsor this program. Mosier funeral cremation service. It's not an easy topic. It's not an easy thing to talk about. But let's face it. We all have to talk about it. Give Scott Robin or a member of their great staff a call today. Talk to them about pre-planning it's truly an awesome gift. It's it's something that sounds like a tough conversation to have. But you know I've been we've been through that process. Most of you have been to that process. Where you're you're planning a funeral and it's so very difficult because that's the last thing you want to do is go through all that all that process so if you can take out a couple of steps so that you.

Lady Gaga Pulled Off Jaw-Dropping Costume Changes at the 2019 Met Gala

"Met gala happened this week. And the theme was camp. Unfortunately camp didn't mean everyone was going to be wearing a tent heart. It got me thinking in twenty twenty if the theme is basketball, and you were all invited to the gala. What would be your outfits keep in mind? It is the met gala your outfit. Can't just be a raptors Carlos Arroyo jersey overtop a forty dollar white linen short sleeve. Ak thread shirt, you white your outfit to get people talking. For example. I'm thinking Westbrook would arrive wearing a suit made out of various basketball nets. And maybe it's sort of like see-through and stuff like that. One question timely question from Graham Baker excuse me. Graeme Barker in Toronto, Ontario. What do you guys wear into the gallon theme is basket was the thing? Lady Gaga turned up to that time. And she was like in luck in Hake. I don't know for sure that may have been just an award show. Everything's the met gala what she did this one. Yeah. Like four outfit changes on the red carpet. That's right. Yeah. I sold them all on the Graham. Yeah. I was quite once I was I like. was like what what's she at different places at different same night. Yeah. So I would tend up anyway in a gigantic basketball kit, and then you know, as you come out. I'm wondering like a fool boss bull suit. Just like basketball's. You're like, Mark. Yeah. Book and Mindy. Mark johnson. Six man. That was more keystones. Arriving like, hey. It was hatchet. That's timely born from happy doesn't it? Yes. Spinoff crazy saying so loud, isn't that? How he sort of showed up an alien. Aged backwards to had a baby on the show, and it was an old, man. Played by Jonathan. Wow. I didn't hear that. He was later in Jack a movie about a boy aging rapidly rapidly. But looking like a boy was that a man sure he was Robin Williams. He was like playing. Yeah. I like eighty. Right. Okay. So you're riding a basketball Mork. Boston, suits, all boss. Your bathroom. That Mavs mascot. Perfect. You wearing tonight Spalding. Okay. What do you guys arriving in basketball is your team remind similar in that? I would just have that basketball mask. Everybody wears with the holes cut out. So it's basketball. But it's got is the highs cut out for your for your eyeballs and then orange pom poms on my nipples and smaller smaller ones on my private areas. All are one splur-. How many doger's he got well for the readers? I'm not showing my news. News. Somewhere in Koby's all white outfit from that. Urban pilgrim. Maybe I'll do some costume changes to. So I can get that shell one he had around his face. He looked like the cover of time magazine, or whatever it was. I don't know. I think pull that off all white just make sure I don't have the Joel embiid's. Last time. I wore all white around you guys. It was is that. That I thought somebody would go with the Timofey MAs Goff, all plaid billion shirts. Draped on you guys. Did that photo shoot one time? Maybe I'll go with
