Tribes Without Clean Water Demand an End to Decades of US Government Neglect

"The full. us senate is set to consider a major. Bipartisan water bill. That would update water infrastructure across the us arizona. Public radio's ryan hinds reports. The package includes funding for tribal drinking water projects. The thirty five billion dollar drinking water and wastewater infrastructure act is the first legislation to advance out of senate committee related to the biden harris administration sweeping infrastructure proposal it would invest in alternate water sources like desalination and storm and wastewater re-use across the country along with updating aging water infrastructure but one key component of the bill is the reauthorization of the indian reservation drinking water program. Decide senator mark. Kelly is a co-sponsor of the bill. Too many tribal communities lack access to running water and don't have wastewater infrastructure and the drought conditions. Made this worse. This fifty million dollars annually is going to help tribes complete these water projects. Every year kelly says in arizona alone. The program would fund ten tribal drinking water projects each year. It's estimated about a third of residence on the navajo nation. Lack water in their homes which has myriad negative impacts on local economies in public health. The infrastructure act also includes funding to prevent water waste as well as technologies to shield water systems from cyber threats. Climate change drought and wildfire. Changes to voting laws across the United States

"We have all just lived through an election in which the way many of us voted changed. A lot of Americans voted early in 2020. A lot of Americans voted by mail because of the pandemic. Now across the country, state lawmakers are weighing what our election should look like going forward. Hundreds of bills have been proposed that would restrict voting access. Hundreds of others would expand access, and this is mostly happening along party lines. Republican led states are broadly looking to add voting restrictions, while many Democratic legislatures are exploring expanding access. Well, we have got reporters. From three states with us to give us a glimpse of what is going on in there. Patch. Let me welcome Been Giles from Cage's in Phoenix. Katarina so historic from Iowa Public Radio and Anthony Brooks of W bur in Boston. Welcome all three of your primary Louise. Then I'm gonna let you start. Let's go to Arizona, which along with Georgia are maybe the state getting the most attention. Those two certainly at both swing states, both with total GOP control at the state level and all kinds of bills. That have been proposed. What what is standing out to you in Arizona? So the biggest proposed changes I see are two what's called Arizona's permanent early voting list. That's our super popular mail ballot system. That a clear majority of voters here use and have increasingly been using in years and years and years. So not new in 2020 is what you're saying. Definitely not new. No, This is a very long standing system here. You sign up for it, and you regularly get sent your ballot, So one change would make it to that. That's not permanent anymore. If you don't actually use the early ballot, you get sent before an election for two straight election cycles. You get a notice that you're getting kicked off the list, and you have to respond to that if you don't want to be removed. Democrats here say there were 126,000 voters in that situation who cast about in 2020 after not voting in 2016 or 2018, Arizona's, of course, very competitive state now so That margin. You know, 126,000 voters could matter. There's also another bill that would shrink the amount of time voters have to cast that early ballot and then new voter I d requirements when you mailed about back or being considered Catarina is any of this sounding familiar. Let's talk about what's going on in Iowa, another Republican controlled state. New restrictions have already been signed into law here. The governor did that on Monday. Ah big changes that early in person Voting and absentee voting will start 20 days before Election Day instead of 29. It was 40 days just four years ago and then deadlines for requesting a melon ballot has been moved up and those ballots have to be returned earlier, so it's really shrinking that time frame. Then in person. Polls will close at eight p.m. instead of nine PM, as they had been before for state and federal elections. Okay. And why do supporters of these changes who we should note are overwhelmingly Republican. Why did they say this is needed? Unlike in Arizona, where Democrats one big races, Republicans in Iowa one pretty much everything and retained full control of the state government. But they have said that these changes are going to help restore Iowans confidence and trust in elections. Here's representative Bobby Kaufman, speaking about the new law. This protects Iowans right to vote, and it adds certainty and security to it. This bill does not suppress one single vote. Of course, we should say that it was Republicans themselves, who created this distrust by questioning election results with false claims of widespread voter fraud. This is something these false claims have been repeated in debates in Iowa over the selection bill, and I'd also add that a lawsuit challenging these changes have already been filed. Mary Louise. I'm hearing similar claims from Republicans in Arizona, broadly speaking there, justifying these bills by arguing that voter confidence and the election must be restored. They don't acknowledge that some of them are responsible for sewing that distrust in the first place. Democrats are quick to point that out and are lining up in opposition to these bills. Here's Senator Martine Cassata, speaking about the voter. I d legislation. We hear communities tell us That this will hurt my community, my neighborhood, my vote and the people that look like me and the people that vote like me. This is going to hurt us. Okay, so a taste of the conversation under way there in Arizona and in Iowa, Anthony Brooks. Let's turn to Massachusetts, where you have got a very different story unfolding. Yeah, It's really different. Mary Louise Esso last summer. Here's a bit of background because of the pandemic, Lawmakers approved a temporary vote by mail law and as in other states, Massachusetts saw ah huge jump in voter turnout in the presidential primary and general election with with relatively few problems. So now there's a push by Democrats who control the state legislature by big numbers. To make vote by mail permanent. So here's Bill Galvin, the Democratic secretary of state, who's a big proponent of this last year test of us in many ways, it was a very challenging year. But at the same time he showed us what we could do. And I think the result was is that we had a very successful election cycle on. We want to make sure that progress is not lost. Is this controversial in Massachusetts are Republicans. They're fired up in opposition and saying similar things as we were hearing from Republicans and other states. Well, there are concerns. I mean, one concern is that any law to make mail in voting permanent will have to include significant new funding for cities in town clerks to do training and to process the big increase in mail. Balance. But in terms of pushback, Republicans have questioned why mail in voting is necessary now that it appears that the pandemic is lessening with vaccines being distributed. But even the moderate Republican governor, Charlie Baker, has said that he would favor making the law permanent. So I think chances are very good. That vote by mail is going to become permanent in Massachusetts and in the months ahead. I do want to know this debate is playing out at the national level, of course, as well. Big Fight looming in Congress over HR one. This huge bill, backed by Democrats that would expand voting access would curtail Jerry Mandarin would have something to say about some of these changes that are being proposed in at the state level and just quick lightning round for each of you. Maybe Anthony you first. How how much attention is HR one getting is this part of the conversation in Massachusetts? It's part of the conversation because our congressional delegation is all Democratic. It's very much behind HR one. But my sense is that no matter what happens in Washington, Massachusetts move toward a permanent Vote by mail legislation is coming, no matter what and Banner, Catarina, where you're so in Arizona, I think Democrats are going to make a big push for our U. S. Senators Mark Kelly and Kirsten Cinema. Get HR one through to undo a lot of what's happening at the state level. That means there's gonna be pressure on cinema to abolish the filibuster. If that's what it takes, because HR one might be the only way to get around some of this state laws that Republicans are certainly gonna pass here and are expected to be signed into law by the governor. And in Iowa Republicans are going to be more focused on this pending lawsuit that they

Amnesty strips Alexei Navalny of 'prisoner of conscience' status

"There was a time when a figure like alexei navalny might have been able to count on if little else the full-throated support of amnesty international. The russian opposition figurehead would appear to meet. Every definition of a prisoner of conscience imprisoned on exceedingly dubious pretext spy unpleasant authoritarians and slash. With no record of ever having furthered he's caused through perpetrating inciting or suggesting violence however amnesty appear to differ on the basis of remarks made by navalny about immigrants a few years back. Amnesty has announced that whatever they will classify navalny as prisoner of conscience is not one. Join with more on this by mark kelly. Russia analyst and author of several books most recently a short history of russia. Mark festival to this maneuver by amnesty. Aren't they missing the point of prisoner of conscience a little bit that it's not necessary that you actually agree with them. Yeah absolutely and this is definitely something of an own-goal for amnesty. And especially so because it seems to bury much be have been triggered by a campaign or if not orchestrated by the kremlin but certainly sort of very much augmented by kremlin friendly. Voices in on social media does hurt navarre only at all it. Does i mean we go. To realize that the kremlin the moment is trying to portray him as anything but a immoral icon. I mean this wine set of charging him with treason or anything like that. They've gone for embezzlement. And basically he's dismissing a great patriotic war veteran and this is going to be an ready. It is being magnified by the russian state media as if it somehow amnesty deciding that novell abadan of course amnesty saying they still think that he should not be imprisoned so forth but that kind of nuance doesn't matter. So the kremlin is definitely gonna use this for it's worth which part of the russian electorate public does this stuff play with though i mean the charges against navalny especially that one. You alluded to of having insulted a veteran of the great patriotic. I mean that's absurd even if true that you would put somebody in the dark for that. The point is this is a long game. Let's be honest. Nevada is going to be in prison for at least two and a years. and what. the substandard kremlin tactic. They basically throw so much mud that even if each individual charge is when you look at it pretty ridiculous at some point just begins to sift into the subconscious of of many of the potential electric. Who aren't really people following the news in detail. They not committed inobound nights. They just went on the they. Just get unsensitive. Oh yeah you know what there will lose court. Cases wasn't their rulers allegations. The hope is that it'll stick again. It's not a sophisticated tactic but they hope is that skin. They have so much control over the media and probably a couple of years to do it. They can black and his reputation before he ever sees the light of day. We have talked before about the strategic sense of this from your vladimir putin on the russian regimes point of view as like why you would turn valley into the center of a circus rather than just ignore him. They hoping though that if he is sent to the salt pile fluently for at least two and a half years that he will just be forgotten about. Definitely the idea. I mean again. They hope is that this way he just simply becomes someone who again used to be someone now. Of course. The difficulty is the moment they have him in a top security prison within a prison. In due course he's going to have to go out and presumed me to just an ordinary prison or in this case a penal colony which is how the russians classify that their prisons and at that point. You know there is the chance that he will have access to whether it's sort of illegal cell phones that he can send out the message and so forth so the there is going to be this constant narrative struggle navanly's people want to keep his memory alive. They want to make into a current thing. The kremlin indu course will want to make him into just some past figure who gets forgotten the you. You have responded to the persecution of nevada by imposing some sanctions which do more symbolic than anything else navalny's supporters unsurprisingly asking the eu to expand those sanctions but is there anything the eu can realistically do in the sanctions department which is going to Compel russia to adjust their behavior. Navales concern because russia can't back down now right valley's going to the penal colony for at least two and a half years yes. There's no real question about that but look sanctions are more than anything else about political symbolism and when you just assigned to go for four fairly obvious candidates who basically have no property in the eu. And unlike we're unlikely to becoming to holiday in the south of france the symbolism the message you're giving is basically we have done the least possible we really don't want to get involved in this if the e you had come up with with a much more robust package of measures. Of course it wouldn't have meant. The putin would suddenly have quake in his boots. Before ios it burrell and reversed his policy but it would have said look. We do take this seriously. We will consist on adding costs to your actions. The trouble is at the moment that actually what they basically said is quite the opposite. The russia obviously does hope that we've out navan the as its figurehead than the protest movement that he leads will just sort of dwindle. Evaporate and disappear. Is that light clear. The discussions about how the rage could be maintained. I mean i'm thinking back to those color revolutions in eastern europe in the early part of this century in one of the reasons or one of the ways they succeeded as that they were substantially lead a loose so the authorities seeking to suppress the movements. Didn't really know who they should cart off. Yeah absolutely and this is one of the problems. I mean they pass. The opposition has had the great virtue of his finger navalny as figurehead because he's very charismatic and effective but now they novelli shaped hole and really echo three ways. They could indeed dwindle all it could. Well be that we will find new leaders. Arising i mean it might be as in belarus that actually you'll find for example navales wife emerging as a new figure all others who can basically fill that role. The third possibility is though if this movement which is essentially very much it's nonviolent. It's political if this fails then there is also the risk that actually people become more radicalized. They feel that we. We tried everything we could within the system. We're going to have to try and go without the system. And i think this is the moment we actually have. No idea. notice the kremlin which way it'll go

"Sally What's your reaction to this corruption where Joe Biden seems to have lied about? Never Never talking about business, especially the Marie's My Ukrainian stuff with his son when emails from his own son's computer clearly show they have Yeah. Hey, Gary. Good morning is going to great to be with Don Jr today. I hope everybody could get out there and rally to help President Trump get across the finish line here with 20 days ago. Yeah, I saw that story. Pop this morning. I've been going on stops and five. I don't think anybody believed That Joe Biden never talked to his son about his position on the board of Charisma. I mean, give me a break. I don't think anybody believe those denials. Um, it'll be interesting to see you know where this love top came from, and it's about to get dropped off to get repaired and nobody ever picked it up. I mean, they get the Darwin Award for that, if that's what they did. Well, they were trying to hide all this stuff, But, um, I mean, seriously, I think it just reveals again. That should Joe Biden win, which we need to stop here in Arizona. You're gonna have just additional grifting going on the elite in our country by then, and his cronies and his family and Omar Kelly and all his. This is what the political elite does right. They Yeah, they can gain influence. They try to profit off the positions that they're in on. That's why Donald Trump got elected, and that's why he needs to get re elected. In order to ensure this, you know, Joe Biden doesn't get back in there when it comes to the corruption. I mean, Joe Biden. It's not just Ukrainians in the Ukraine, and then we look at it on a local level. I mean, Mark Kelly, your opponent. They right here in Pima County World View. One of the many investors is in it is 10 Cent, which is the tech giant That literally does all the censorship right for the child, Calm government. Center with Internet Exactly again. This is an example of what the elite has been doing in America, right? They looked, you know, be able to profit off of connections. Profit off of, you know government relationships, and this is Mark Kelly story. He went over to China, as I talked about in the debate in 2003 on this Chinese propaganda arm retreat, trying to bring the elite in America into their orbit, and it succeeded and went back in 2004. Back in 2005, But it was the most meaningful thing he did in his life other than going to space, which is bizarre and then went to space in 2006 brought the Chinese Communist banter with him. Because it was so meaningful to him. And then he gets out of the you know, retired from the military and starts a company in Tucson and reaches out to 10 Cent to invest in this company. This is a 10 cent interview to the national security threat. They are close to the Chinese government, and you don't just pick up the phone and called 10 Cent. He had to have had those relationships already, which started to form while he was still active duty Navy going over to China and then profiting off it trying to get rich quick. I look, we want people to be able to prosper in America. Right, Garrett. We care about hard work, You know, Start a business being entrepreneur and prosperity is not a bad thing, but what the elite has done. They built prosperity off relationships and, you know, corruption and access, and that's what the Americans and Arizonans are against. And that's what that take care in my election as well. You know, I sit here in question. How could this guy want to be a senator when he literally knows that he's doing business with Communists and a company that is in charge of censoring the Internet? You know, with that kind of judgment. How can he be trusted to be a senator for the United States representing Arizona? And he can't is the point. It's disqualifying and is that 10 Cent has been basically cracking down and censoring, you know Chinese citizens in Hong Kong and other places. They are collecting information wherever they can. They're they're Chinese state owned company, and Mark Kelly is in business with them. And you know many other Americans are, too But that doesn't mean you get to be a senator is the point. China is our biggest year political threat They unleashed this virus on us have been stealing our jobs, stealing our technology, stealing our research President Trump of the first one to stand up to them. I am standing up to them. This is this is the critical national security issue of this election is standing up to China and we cannot allow Joe Biden and Mark Kelly to be in there with their deep financial ties. It is disqualified. As a senator, with China being such a threat and you know, I eyeballed this. I've caught this on great websites that do all kinds of great reporting about how college campuses university is basically a paid off by China. Half devil there. Then they set up shop like you have a Ieyasu. They both had it where they set up shop and they can't They can't the colleges themselves can't even get in there. It's like it's like it becomes like a Chinese Embassy. Almost where they just set up shop and steal information. I mean, should they be Ben? If you're senator, what would you do to crack down on China? Stealing our our intellectual property getting on our campuses, stealing everything that we're doing? What? We're already doing it again. People are waking up to it that China has been doing this in plain sight as you mentioned, you know, access to our research institution or universities trying tow have basically their propaganda arm while they steal our technology Steeler job. We already cracking down on this. I mean, I'm on a bill with Rick Scott and some others specifically about a full review of all students are here, you know, during research and the visa applications and those who were associate ID, potentially with that, you know the Chinese military. They're using our free society and are open system to their benefit, And it's like jokes on us, right? So we've got to take a full review. Of the access that they have legally and illegally. I mean, they, you know, they do cyber attacks and they take our stuff. But in many cases they were taking it legally because we're giving them access through technology transfers, you know, joint ventures or, you know, research access and things like that. It's time for America to wake up. We need to take a full review of our own security. Here, do everything we can tow hold China accountable and ensure that we bring our manufacturing homes that we're not relying on them for a PPE and our pharmaceuticals and critical minerals. We need to, you know, make an F 35 you know, or air our defense equipment. I mean, this is this is a wake up call for America. This is very much what this election is about. And that's why President Trump has to get re elected and why I've got to get elected and make sure that Mark Kelly's not in Senate and one of those things reason to get in. There is what's going on right now. With Supreme Court with Amy Cockney Barrett and, you know, first off. I don't know how you work with these people like I'm watching the White House guy and watching Harow know, asking if she sexually assaulted anybody. Cory Booker ask her if she's against white supremacy, and she's two black Children. You know what? What is going on here? Now? She has been so impressive. She is so smart. And then one of telling part of the debate last week of Mark Kelly was that before even hearing any word she says, he told he said, yes, you said last week debate. I would not vote to confirm her without even asking questions or know anything about her. That's a big deal. Well, I was surprised. He actually said that Garrett, you know, he tends to not take a Buddhist nun. Anything he's hiding, but I forced him to answer that. And he said no and the reason he said no. And because, of course, Many yet you know, we're not. He's not going to get elected. But should he? They're gonna want liberal activist judges on the bench, packing the court. And how dare he say that he would not put this highly qualified woman who's risen to the top of her field is brilliant, unflappable of you. Anybody's watching every school room in America should be tuning into these hearings. Learn about our Constitution. Learn about what Originalist and a Texas is. Look at these people on the other side of the island. How they're conducting themselves are almost used A not nice word on another conduct themselves versus her, and she belonged on that court, and I'm going back to D..

I mean, I'm on a bill with Rick Scott and some others specifically about a full review of all students are here, you know, during research and the visa applications and those who were associate ID potentially with you know the Chinese military. Here, do everything we can to hold China accountable and ensure that we bring our manufacturing home. So we're not relying on them for a PPE and our pharmaceuticals and critical minerals. With Supreme Court with Amy Cockney Barrett and you know First of I don't know how you work with these people like I'm watching the White House guy and watching Harow know, asking if she sexually assaulted anybody. Cory Booker ask her if she's against white supremacy, and she's two black Children. You know what? What is going on here? Now? She has been so impressive. She is so smart. And then one of telling part of the debate last week of Mark Kelly was that before even hearing any word she says, he told you said, Yes, You said last week, the bait. I would not vote to confirm her without even asking questions or know anything about her. That's a big deal. Well, I was surprised. He actually said that Garrett, you know, he tends to not think of it is not anything that he's hiding. But I forced him to answer that. And he said no, and the reason he said no is because of course. Honey, you know we're not. He's not going to get elected, but should he? They're gonna want liberal activist judges on the bench, packing the court. And how dare he say that he would not put this highly qualified woman who's risen to the top of her field is brilliant, unflappable of you..

"Closer look and outside of the elections building through all of this where I've been all day today all day yesterday. Still Trump supporters who are here. You know, in many ways, Aaron E. It's a lot like a mini Trump rally here that speakers have been getting up. It's gone from early in the morning until last night overnight. Lot of unfounded theories are growing here. No evidence of fact behind them. Whatyou mean Lewis. He's among the people out here claiming that they believe there is fraud going on inside this building, Trump loses, okay. He is, If it's a rigged system, otherwise you win in a landslide. The sign your holdings has stopped hiding the ballots. Do you think they're hiding ballots inside this building? Ideo? I think that Number one. We've been caught on video. We've seen cars that have California license plates. Those people were trying to see and they were caring bags with them. And maybe this is normal thing. Moving vans coming in and out of here and docking. What do you think they're doing in the moving vans in the bags? I think they're bringing in more ballots or fake ballots and again. There is no evidence of any of this. But these are the stories after they've been hearing what the president's been saying that much of this group is talking about now They're watching every car going in suspicious of it suspicious of what's going on inside. And as we told you yesterday, Aaron, we were inside for Ah, bit of it yesterday. It is very detailed what they're doing. Democrats and Republicans working together to get the job done. And Alex, There was news in the Arizona Senate race today. Yeah, there was, And this is a big deal here in Arizona ABC News projecting Mark Kelly, former astronaut, defeating center Martha MC Sally and this is Ah big pickup for Democrats coming from Arizona. "And Democrat Mark Kelly is going to defeat Republican Martha McSally in the Arizona Senate race. Just a view on the changing landscape here in Arizona right now, Joe Biden is ahead in the vote count and on Election day of 2018, Arizona had two Republican senators. Now it appears Arizona will have two Democrats reverie. Running the state. It is a big shift in their state that in some areas is still so conservative, but it's changing rapidly here in Maricopa County around Phoenix. "Voice your vote. Neither Joe Biden President Trump had the 270 electoral votes needed to declare victory yet, but the latest count of ballots and early voting across undecided states shows Biden edging closer while Americans wade summer pro testing in those undecided states. ABC is Alex Stone is in Arizona at the scene of one protest in Phoenix. Out of about 1000 or so trump supporters who were outside of Maricopa County Elections office. They have been chanting four more years and justice justice speaker after speaker saying that if President Trump doesn't win Arizona or nationally that then it has been stolen that then it is fraud, something that the president his team has been saying as well. There is no evidence of that here in Arizona or in Nevada. With this crowd, saying, If the counting going on inside this building doesn't come out their way will then clearly there has been fraud election voting centers in battleground states, a bipartisan group of observers air watching those votes with continuing coverage. I'm Michelle Franzen, ABC News Well, Arizona may or may not decide who wins the race for the White House, But President Trump and Democrats Joe Biden are locked up in quite the battle here in the Grand Canyon State cars. Political expert Mike O'Neal expects the president to keep slicing into Biden's lead in our battleground state. This is right down the middle. "Of course, they believe they've got a Biden win as well. A CZ I want to take control of both houses of Congress. So far, Democrats have gained one seat. Cory Gardner, the Republican Colorado conceded to the former governor. A moment ago, I spoke to Senator elect John Hickenlooper to congratulate him on his victory tonight. To welcome him to the United States Senate and to make sure that he knows I will support him in this transition anyway, that I can. That flip is somewhat canceled out, though, is the Alabama Senate seat held by Democrat Doug Jones went to the very pro Trump retired football coach Tommy Tuberville in Arizona. While it appears the seat held by incumbent Republican Martha McSally is going to the Democrat, former astronaut Mark Kelly. Exactly said it was too soon to make that call. It's Election Day. Take a breath. Here's what to expect.

"Politics. And this landscape in particular, Wendy Schiller joins us. She of Brown University, of course on a friend to the program, and Teo Is the station with the chair of political science again at Brown University. Wendy, What is your base case? No. I just get right to it. I think here's what I think will will know from some congressional races, I think, signaling earlier than even the presidential races. We know that there's a lot of people who are elected in 2018 in what we call competitive swing district like Virginia, for example. Leave Illinois. We have a couple of races in Texas that look really tight and are surprisingly competitive. We have a couple of Minnesota, you know if things start to swing in congressional district sooner. For the Democrats. Then you start to think, Okay, maybe buy will have a very good night. But, you know, we'll know about Florida will know about North Carolina will know about Arizona, and we'll know about Georgia, probably, but before midnight tonight, and if all of those swing for Trump If Trump looks really healthy in those states and looks like he could win, then I think things get very, very dicey for Biden, so that's a big sort of vomit or buying only when one of those states You know, one of those four states or look like he's in the lead in a considerable lead in one of those states for him, that sort of have a more relaxed night. But if he if Trump wins, all of Omar looks like he's going to win all of them, I think that that tells us that this sort of blue wave we thought might emerge isn't going to emerge the same way. So, Professor. How do you think the Senate will shake out is there in fact, you know the market's kind of suggesting here today that a blue wave may in fact be in the cards? How do you think that might go in the Senate? That that that's a great question, Paul because you think about the Senate, and you think you know Mitch McConnell is totally immune. This time, you would have thought if there's a big blue wave. You know, The guy has really been the poster boy for the campaign against the Republicans controlling the Senator Mitch McConnell. He's goingto probably breeze to reelection, some a little suspicious of that big blue way for the Senate. Iowa looks neck and neck. You know, we had a recent poll. That's very credible that looks like Joni Ernst can pull it out and stay. You know if Cal Cunningham can win in North Carolina That suggests probably that the Democrats might get 51. If they can win Maine as well. Probably away in Arizona. Probably gonna win Colorado and lose Alabama, so they're looking at probably minimally a 51 49 Republican, or 50, 50 51 49 Democrats. So I think that's where they you know, we don't know. And I think that's where North Carolina becomes so important, even even if we don't know by Trump. You know, it's Cal Cunningham looks like he's really gonna win that race that suggest better things. The Democrats across the board for the Senate Say some of that again. When do you say Arizona is definitely going to go Democrat Texas? What did you say about Texas? And then also, I think, Arizona for Mark Kelly. I think he's been polling very consistently ahead of Martha makes alley. But you can imagine, let's say people voting for more. Kelly, a former astronaut. You know and not voting for Joe Biden. You know, voting for Kelly because they want him over more than Sally and they voted for Trump in Arizona. You didn't see the Democrats winning Senate in Arizona but not winning the presidential race. Then Texas is, you know, shocking right? The turnout in Texas has been absolutely shocking. And but it looks like John Cornyn comfortably ahead of head guard that the challenger there, But I think the issue is that Trump is only basically one point ahead in Texas, which is just you know, if you think about politics, just stunning. Same with Georgia. George will be interesting because it does not get 50% or more against us off. Then you've got to run off elections in Georgia in January, and I think that's really going to be some interesting voting dynamics, so it's possible the Senate Democrats could ultimately end up with a 51 of 52 majority, but I still think it's a bit of a long shot. So Professor if the presidential election becomes contested, what is your kind of base case for how it may play out? I think we could be faced with an unprecedented historic situation. I think you know if we have a tie, for example, if in the Electoral College in December's actually a tie, it goes to the newly elected house, which is expected Thio more Democratic. However, the Republicans still control more votes in state delegations than the Democrats, and that's Probably isn't going to change so you could conceivably have literally the house electing a re electing President Trump but in the Senate. If it's 51 49 with the new Senate and its new Democrats, then they may like Tomahawk. Advice. I mean, really, quite stunning. It's really stunning thing. So I think so many things have changed already in 2020 weather, Trump gets reelected or not, is obviously monumental. But even if he gets reelected, I think the Democrats have shown they know how to mobilize voters, and I think they've shown some of these states have changed a lot in terms of demographics, and they are going to be more competitive, moving forward. Which changes the nature of politics going to 2022. If we know that politicians look at the next election the minute this election is over, and so when we start to think about what the balance of power might be in the Senate house in 2022 these gains the Democrats appear to be making among voters in the states. Changes a lot of dynamics, which will probably change some of the policies coming out of Congress. Yeah, I mean, it's really the African American gold, right, Wendy and how much more of that will see? We're already seeing, you know, a lot more engagement. Yeah. So I think African American who has always been key in North Carolina and Georgia had about 64% African American turnout in 2016. It wasn't enough because those numbers were not hit in in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania among African American voters, and they, you know they may or may not get there. If they get there, I think Biden winds relatively easily. But what's interesting is suburban white women. Of all educational levels seem to be really vehemently at the moment against Trump in the polls, and it could be that instead of the black vote really being key in the Midwest, it ends up being white women. Which would be really interesting shift, you know, mirrors 2018 when white, the majority of white women voted for democratic candidates, But it would change the nature of the Democratic coalition. If that were the deciding factor, So that's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for turnout, particularly in particular counties in Michigan. Well, we still have. A lot of people are gonna vote in person and certainly in Pennsylvania when you were really out of time. But I am desperate to

That was Republican Senator Martha McSally on with Arizona's Morning news Friday, and this morning, we caught up with her Democratic challenger on Election Day Eve. There's Jeremy Foster joins us live with more on what Mark Kelly had to say. One of the first things we asked Mark Kelly Jamie in a race where polls have consistently showed him in the lead there now tightening, in fact, a brand new Data orbital poll of 550 likely Arizona voters out this morning show Kelly just 1% point ahead of MK Sally Now. Two weeks ago, the same polls showed him up over six points. But Kelly told us he's still confident. Think the only Poles that really matters when folks go to the polls tomorrow, and when they count the votes, and that might take might be done tomorrow might take a couple days. I feel pretty good. Something else. Kelly and other Democrats may be keeping an eye on Republicans of return nearly 45,000 more ballots in Maricopa County than Democrats so far on the early voting side and about 90,000 Mohr than those who are not registered with either party. But Kelly points out that a lot of support from Republicans, including former elected officials, I have the Republicans for you know Mark Kelly for Senate Group. He also words folks to be patient. If we don't see the final results on Election day, and you can tune in all day for special election team coverage right here on our and we'll begin it tomorrow at five. AM I tell you, this is going to be one watch because the Republicans have come from behind to now lead with the number of ballots already returned and their also expected to turn out Maur enforce the Democrats at the actual voting booth tomorrow, so this is really going to be one to watch it is and we we heard from the Steve Cortes with the Trump campaign today. But We would have to relocate and they will not tell us where until they give us the final offer, and then we only have 48 hours. Oh, my Okay. Hold on. It's his dream job. Yeah, OK, there's like way more. Jonah. Jonah, Listen, Listen, Jonah. That's not the problem. I heard in your voice when you said This is his dream job, So he says, You don't believe him. You know, I'm sorry I do. I do believe him. I I do believe him. I do. So why do you struggle with getting on board? Okay, well, so there's a lot just bear with me. Okay, so if he takes the position at first, there is a pretty significant pay cut. After 90 days he would be back to his current salary. I also heard full time and my appearance here in Michigan can watch our babies. So, obviously when we reel, Okay, I would lose my salary and I would stay at home with the babies. I have been looking at you and you like work for one job. I don't really know how realistic that is with A two year old and four year old running around, but You know, um We are currently in baby Step number two. We own a home now, and it's beautiful and I love it. It's um But when we know we are in baby steps so we wouldn't be able to purchase a home right away. When we moved down there. We are committed to the Ramsey plans. And so we have a long way to go and I just feel like Right now. We are not financially ready to be a single income family, and we're like Two years, maybe 20 years away from being that free and You know, having our emergency fund and I think that's like when it would be amazing to those and relocate and do all the wonderful things. But he is He's so miserable and job. He loves his family, life and everything, but he just Can't he just go unhappy with how long has he been doing this job, Sean? Well, he's been Doing the job for nine years, but he just currently went to this. He's been in this position for five years, and so has he been miserable for five or for the last five months? No, it's been The first day. He was like, Oh, man. So Shauna, this is Jonah. This isn't a math problem, And this is not a baby steps problem or in two years, this would be a great time. My wife and I took a $70,000 household income pay cut because I wasn't well. It wasn't the right job for me in the right season. Within six months we moved to a new town. I started a new job. And we begin a trajectory now financially that neither of us could have ever wrapped our head around. Our marriage is in a place we never could have wrapped her head around. So that's not the issue. The issue sounds like it's a values issue. That you love your house. You love your family, and you love the security. You love the idea of a plan. And you got a husband who has been grinding it out. As you said, five years, nine years in a job that he hates to support you guys And if somebody finally tapped him on the shoulder And he's now in a position to choose between. Ah, a wife who loves the security in the planning her family, which isn't a bad thing. This is all good stuff versus Oh, my cash Me and I could actually breathe at work. And so you're gonna have to have a long term values conversation. It is not about math right now. It's not about staying on the plan or off. It's bigger than that. This is a Who are we going to be? Is it going to be six months is going to be a year is going to 2.5 years and that's a much bigger conversation that I'm gonna steal this from a friend Chris Hogan here. That's a dream in an HD question. What we want five years to look like from now what we want three years. Who's at that table where our kids What am I doing professionally? Where you doing professionally? That's way bigger than a math problem, And that's not something to be had when he comes home from work, and we got.

"The board of a Restaurant company accused of sexual harassment. They forced women to sign away their rights to be able to sue for sexual harassment. That makes me think I don't like how he treats women, Mark Kelly will really do anything for a dollar. Okay. And the other side we know Kirsten Cinema did the ad This is ah, This is Kirsten Cinema Arizona Snow that Martha McSally will say anything to get elected. Her false attacks against me were desperate and over the top. Now she's doing the same to Mark Kelly. Now. One of the ads was very funny. I was watching it on TV. And if you watch it very quickly, you can catch it. That it says independent fact, checkers said Martha McSally lied about Mark Kelly, one of the independent fact checkers that they reference on the screen. E. J. Montini. He's independent. That guy's he's as independent as I am. That would be like Martha McSally running an ad saying independent fact checker said Mark Mark Kelly lied and they referenced me. That's how independent E. J. Montini is. But those of the ads I'm talking about. We're just sick of him. At least I am I noticed that that Mark Kelly is sexist ad that is running now. I noticed that that popped up in the last couple of days. If not today, I'm not sure Today was the first time I noticed it and negative is hell does work. That's why they do it. It works on both sides when you can establish what seems to be a reasonable argument for someone, you know that I think the ad about Mark Kelly promising to hire people in Tucson, and it failed, and he kept millions. I think that does affect people because we all know getting government loans to start a business. A lot of people are not in favor of that on either side of the aisle. But looking at tonight what we're going to see and what we should see. Now is the time where both candidates will have to answer questions. Will Mark Kelly be forthright about where he stands on issues because Mark Kelly just uses the word independent. I'll be an independent voice. We should be independent in the Senate's We should work for all people of Arizona. That all sounds terrific. And it's all in platitudes. Where do you stand on Joe Biden's tax increase? Joe Biden wants a $3 trillion tax increase. Are you in favor of that or not? Will he answer that question. Where do you stand on stacking the court. If the Democrats take over the Senate, they control the House and Joe Biden wins. There are Democrats out there that want to stack four more liberal justices on the court to offset the three appointments by Donald Trump. Will you vote in favor of that? And if he won't answer the question, if he dodges the question, it will be apparent on the other side of that, asking Senator Max Sally. We're already trillions of dollars in debt. Donald Trump is saying he wants the lower taxes. Even Mohr. Will that add to the deficit And would you be in favor of Trump tax cuts? You've been accused of voting to get rid of people's coverage for preexisting conditions. Where do you stand on those issues? Each of those candidates will have to answer really questions we're going to. Hopefully, we're going to hear where Mark Kelly stands on some issues. Martha McSally has a record, good or bad, Whether you think it's a good record or a bad record. She has a reference. She's going to reference her record on what she sees on the positives. There is no record for Mark Kelly. That could be good and bad. We also don't know where Mark Kelly stands on the issues. He was on with Gaydos and Chad. He wouldn't answer the question about Supreme Court justices whether he would vote for the nominee. That's up there right now. Dr Judge Barrett. And he wouldn't talk about stacking the courts. Will they answer the real questions? And that if they will, That's what the people of Arizona want. Whether Mark Kelly is sexist or Mark Kelly did this or Mark barely sold energy drinks in China, Our protein shakes or whatever it was People want to know where they stand on the issues. In the end, those personality attacks may be effective. But you've got to know where people stand on the issue. And will we be able to get that tonight? If we do? I'm gonna love watching it If it isn't that And it's going to be boring, and it's going to be frustrating. President Trump Back in the White House. He has a message for everyone. We're going to let you hear the message. Next President.

"It's simple, and it's the easiest one to navigate. The primary's yesterday. Martha make Sally was Senator MK Sally was in with us was on with us this morning by phone that she has now got to play a little bit of catch up. And there's ah, a number of things that have gone on in her campaign, and she's down by double digits of 10 points, 12 points and some of the polls I've seen one is Lois seven, but she's trailing Mark Kelly. In the Senate race. She ran against Kirsten Cinema, and it was almost the same scenario. And what I mean by that is that Martha McSally had a primary And that primary was a tough one, though that was a tougher primary. And then you know where this is no disrespect to Daniel McCarthy. But she had a very difficult primary last time around, and so she had to focus on winning her nomination. Kirsten Cinema ran unopposed and was able to go for months with name idea around the state, declaring herself independent just like Arizona. She said she was a Democrat. Small D people don't care about political parties. And it was a plan that worked very well for her. Mark Kelly is doing exactly the same thing. Mark Kelly is saying. We need independent leadership to make decisions and I'll be independent. I'll be a senator for all of Arizona. And he's playing the Democrat Small D card. Senator MK Sally saying that she mark Kelly needs to answer for who he is, is challenging him to seven debates, three that the networks want three rural debates and another debate. So here was Mark Kelly's response to the seven debate challenge. I think it's very important that we have of robust debate.

"I'm Mark Kelly we're talking about A five star retirement, right? We think of the five star resorts, five star restaurants, five star hotels, five star golf courses. Whatever it is, we know those are the cream of the crop. Right? So the question is. How do we know what our rating would be for our retirement plan? If you just have tools? Well, sorry. You're not a five star retirement plan. You've gotta have an income plan Investment strategies tax strategies. Health planning and you've gotta have a legacy the state planning in there to kind of pull it all together. All of those are important, and some areas are more important than others when you when you're trying to figure out where you are on your road to retirement, And that's what the financial freedom Road map that Brooklyn creates in conjunction with her clients, So it's a two way street. It's not Brooklyn telling. You have to do this or you have to do that. But it's really your using her knowledge and expertise and helping people since 2008 retired the way they want to retire. She understands this world. Hopefully, you will listen to what she has To say you just have to keep an open mind. Remember Brooklyn? If you have a parachute and a brain, what is one of the key common things that we need to have happen? Made a packet right. If you had a parachute, and he jumped out, you better hope it opens. Right. So you need an open parachute for it to work. But you need an open mind as well. When we start talking about all these different areas when it comes to retirement, So you know, we're talking about the income planning in the investment strategies to parts of the financial freedom, road maps and there's taxes. Health legacy planning. But back to those because most people are kind of somewhat aware of what they have. At least I have a 401 K on IRA. They may not know exactly what's inside of them, but they know they have those tools in their retirement to about so when we get to retirement, you know my grandparent's, For example, they had pensions. They had Social Security, and they didn't have very high expenses because we didn't do a whole lot. But they also had interest rates in the seventies and eighties. There were double digit put money in a CD. Get 10%. You're good to go right? That's not the case today. I don't have a pension and I don't have Interest rates in the bank. So I'm pretty much stuck with my 401 k hoping things worked out. But do you think about it? Should we be adjusting a little bit? What we have in the market because we know things are going to cost more. You mentioned it before. Inflation is a big factor that can kind of get overlooked. I would think by some. Yeah, definitely. And Mark. I went to this event like I don't know. Like maybe 10 years ago. You know, I'm constantly just learning and going toe continuing education or seminars and back before we could travel, But now it's like the new world of weaponized and I heard this person talk one time and I wish I could remember who it was. But they said you have seven buckets of investments. That could later be seven streams of income, so I don't know I started doing that back. 10 years ago, and and I know that's that's easier said than done in the fact that I did it 10 years ago, and it's a way to create some diversification. And not everyone needs seven buckets that I'm not trying to go there. It's just what I did for myself, but it's a combination. You know, I've got one bucket that that's going to be tax free. That is guaranteed tax free and guaranteed returns. I have another bucket that's tax free, that there's no guarantees its all market driven. I have a tax deferred kid. I have a non market basis. Totally. It's ah combination of tools in there like real estate and guarantees and notes and things like that. The business that we've got here that's a nonguaranteed but hopefully Creates it becomes an asset. Some days. It feels like a toddler with a bunch of problems, But and then we you know my husband. I have a couple of options together and then my husband himself. He has an option with his his his employer in his work so combination. I don't personally have seven. It's between my husband and I But you know again, it's It's a strategy and what I try and do with clients is show them different strategies. And the one thing you will hear from me time and time again is there is not one way to do it. It's what you've been doing and then maybe tweaking it to be a little bit better in our hope that Texas financial visor is to be that liaison. That kid enlighten you. And show you different ways of doing it so that it could be easier or give you more and come down the road or create a less of a tax bill for you. That's our goal. I don't know what the market's going to do. I can only speculate. I don't know what the you know what inflation's going to look like. I can only speculate. But what we can control is your fees within your accounts that the taxes that you pay the income that you take. Those are things that we can help you with and also help you prepare. You know, I'm not a doomsday er, but I do know if you get sick. You're going to need some help whether it's getting groceries or Driving. You are taking care of the yard. When you pass away. You can't take it with you. So how is it going to flows doesn't need to go into something a little more complex like a trust. Our can't go out, right? Do you need to control the money from the grave? So all of these things that we can help walk you through and show you different options in order to be able to, you know, help you continue to grow your legacy to be a blessing to yourself into your family and those that depend upon you so Again. That's what your financial freedom Road map looks like. Our hope is that at the end of our time together, you know a lot of our clients mean we're going on 13 years and we have client the first client that.

"Mark Kelly was on his Democratic Candidate for the U. S. Senate joins us now on Arizona's Morning news. Happy fourth Mark. Thank you so much for your service to our country and to an agency that's near and dear to my heart. My dad works for the Johnson Space Centre has for the better part of the last four decades. And I do want to talk about space because there is some news here actually on that front, but first Governor Ducey decided this week to re closed some businesses due to the spike in cases here. Now there's all kind of legal battles potential legal battles happening on going on right now. Did the governor do the right thing? Yeah. In this case. Yeah. I mean, initially. What if you go back to when we re opened the CDC. And the public health officials said. We should see two weeks of decreasing cases. That wasn't the case we re opened. We never got the virus the outbreak under control, so we've got to take some steps. It's unfortunate. You know, I know. Business owners are are suffering out there. Folks have lost their jobs, but we can't allow this to spiral out of control. But do you think that there has to be some sort of balance Because you know people losing their jobs that and then you know that the $600 from the feds is due to run out soon. So that can cause a whole other set of problems. Isn't there a way to do both? Absolutely on DH. That's where the focus needs to be right. So wearing a mask, especially when you're in public, especially inside in public, social distancing, washing your hands. We need great examples from leadership. We need it reinforced over and over again. 100% of Arizonans would do this and be and be consistent about it. We could flatten the curve and we could start getting this infection right now is upto 12.5% I was looking today. Ah positive tests and we could we could really start to turn that around. But it's going to take a commitment by everybody. Alright, We're talking to Mark Kelly, Democratic US candidate for the for the Senate seat in with Martha McSally 7.5 1,000,000 jobs. Added over the last two months, and that includes June's jobs numbers were nearly five million were added. I know 30 million or so were lost during the pandemic. But do you see this as a positive that that jobs are coming back right now? Do you feel good about where the economy is headed? Well, yeah, I mean, that's certainly a good thing. I mean, it's better than having more jobs lost, though I do worry about you know, with our hospital's getting I seeyou beds here at 90% capacity that the hospital start to get overloaded. The steps the governor had to take now, and the economic impact of this is it's It's substantial right and it's going to last for some time. We do need to focus on the economy. We've got a healthcare crisis that caused an economic crisis. Um on DH. Folks are really struggling out there and talk to business owners across the state, and they're just trying to keep their heads above water. They need help from the government. I'm really concerned with those folks that have recently unemployed who's as you mentioned their unemployment. Insurance is going to run out soon. We've got to make sure that they you know that they could put food on the table. So this this is this is unfortunately this is far from over. It's important that everybody take this incredibly seriously. I worry about this Fourth of July weekend here where we're starting. Mark more than 200 veterans sent a letter to Governor Ducey urging him to remove Confederate statues in the state. I'm asking you this because you are a veteran, Do you think that these Ah, these statues need to be removed? Yeah, I think, but I think it's up to the government to make that decision. So I understand, But there were those 200 veterans are coming from. I agree. I think it's ah, It's time we take these steps. I think each one of these statues need to be looked at. You know, Separately, who The person is what their role Wass as part of the Confederacy. Um many of these statues are, you know, leadership during the Confederacy that No, these, You know, folks, You know, we're treasonous to our government and lost. So I understand where they're all coming from. Mark Kelly, Democrat US Senate candidate from Arizona, joining us and you've endorsed Joe Biden for President Rasmussen poll out this week of likely voters showed almost 40% think that he has dementia 20% of Democrats on Wednesday, he said he's been tested constantly for cognitive decline. Are you at all concerned about his state of mind or health? Or do you think he's firing on all cylinders? I am not worried about that. I mean, I think Vice President Biden has demonstrated leadership and has the ability to lead this country in a very difficult time. We've got four months to the election election is about choices. And you know, it's clear to me that Vice President Biden is the best choice to be elected president of the United States here and this year it actually Election day exactly four months from today, and we had you on last month, and several polls had you up double digits on Senator McSally. New data Orbital pull out two days ago shows McSally now within seven. Are you happy with where your campaign is right now? Well, I've got a great team. We're working really hard. Unfortunately, things have have changed with the pandemic. But public health is our number One priority here. We want to be I want to be helpful. We don't wanna be part of the problem, so we don't do anything in person. We've got four months to go to the election Polls are obviously a snap shot in time. They're not always accurate, were focused on getting our message out. And and I'm you know, also focused on Understanding all the issues that Arizona faces. So if I am elected the United States Senate, I'll be ready to do the job on day. One mark last question, and it is that at the very beginning Ah, there's there's a push by Republican Congresswoman Debbie Lesko. Congressman Paul Go Start to get Space Force Command headquarters here in Peoria. Now you're a military veteran and space forces the six branch of the military and you're also a space veteran. Is that something you would like to see? It'll be fantastic and made it within the state. I don't know exactly where in the state the Oriana. We should. We should put it. I heard I heard that it was recommended that it would be put in Peoria. We have a lot of great options here. We also have a lot of A defense industry here with I'm very talented and capable defense contractors or work for second support this. It's a great idea. Um, a lot of this capability right now is at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, where a door at the station. But you know things can change. And I'd be an advocate for you know, little beings, the space force headquarters here to the state of Arizona. I think that's a good idea. All right, that's Democratic. U S Senate candidate for Arizona. Mark Kelly. Thank you so much for the time. We really appreciate it. Thanks again for your service to this country and have a happy fourth, OK? Yeah, You too, Jeremy. Thank you for having me on Alright. Take their likewise. All right, 7 50 on Arizona's morning news. Time to get back out to the Valley Chevy deal with traffic.

"Yesterday. We had Mark Kelly candidate for Senate on the decided appears to he's going to run unopposed or he will be what we call presumptive nominee for Democrats to be the candidate for Senate running against a sitting Senator Martha mcsally on our side here coming up in twenty twenty and yesterday he came in and sat down for. I don't think we needed a time. It was his first. Intermediary. He doesn't apparently said he done some print never done TV radio. So since the clearing that he'd be running correct just a few weeks ago. So we got a chance to sit down with them and ask him a few questions. We had limited time with them. What do you want to start? Let's start with let's start with what he said. He believes is the number one issue facing. We asked him what he thought was most important, right? Here's what he said what Aaron Jones think about every single day is what's going to happen to their healthcare coverage or they're going to get kicked off because they get sick or they not going to be able to get coverage for pre existing condition. That is a major issue that Washington DC is not addressing in a smart way. Yeah. The kitchen table issues that impacts us every single day. No surprise there too. Which is a what do I want to say that the Democrats that is their rallying cry? They right. And so in cry of Medicare for all like government healthcare to which I asked him does it mean. That's what you're supporting. Well, I think everybody has a right as a as a country as wealthy as ours. We should be able to provide affordable healthcare that people are going to be able to get if they're sick. If they have a pre existing condition that they're not. Gonna lose if they later get sick. And they're not going to reach some cap, and they get kicked off of we should be able to do that. I think most people would agree with the statements. They're very like right down the line. Yeah. There's nothing to disagree within there is there. So we had limited amount of time with him. We also talked to him about immigration. We talked to him about the race that, you know, it looks like it's going to be him versus Martha mcsally, and you know, what kind of tone, can we expect from that? But there was a question that I wanted to ask him on the air, and we ran out of time. So microphones got turned off. And I think that sometimes the most interesting discussions, Bruce. Unfortunately, happened off the air when that is the case we want to share them with you. And I think that's what happened with Mark Kelly. Now, this was not an off the record conversation. We're not betraying. No. In fact, this is a question he should be well prepared. He's getting here. This the more so microphones turned off. And you know, we exchange pleasantries and handshakes and so on and so forth. And I looked at I said, sir. I've got one more question for you. I know we were up against the clock there. But if you'll indulge me for just a few more minutes, I'd really like to get your thoughts on it. And he goes, absolutely, Pamela. What's your question? And I said to him. You have taken a pretty staunch stance on the second amendment. I understand why you have that position. His brand is one of gun reform gun control, a call, it whatever you want. That's I think it's his brand. And the reason it's part of his brand is because his wife congresswoman Gabby giffords was shot down on years ago. So you can understand why that's part of his brand. But it's your living in the state of Arizona and you're running for a Senate seat in the state of Arizona. That is extremely pro second amendment to make my point everyone's talking heat for lack of a better term. How do you win the state of Arizona with the stances you've taken on gun control measures in the past? And he said, yeah, it is definitely an issue. But it's an issue that most people agree upon and in ariz-. Zona most people agree upon commonsense. Gun reform open ended he went on to say, Pamela. I am a staunch supporter of the second amendment. I have more guns than most people. But I believe that felons should not be able to have weapons I believe that there should be background checks. So there were like certain again, you can go into the quote unquote, common sense gun legislation. But while he says that there is support for those types of the movements in the state of Arizona, and you know, he's got research. And I mean, I'm sure they're doing a bunch of data his his campaign. I just simply look at our Twitter feed. I look at the emails we receive the calls. We get on the open mic line. And I don't know if Arizona is as open to those kinds of reforms. I am. I too am a supporter of the second amendment have guns myself. But I think that there are certain things we can do to make good people safe. The absolutists are the ones that are in the minority though, the the no gun laws whatsoever. What part of the second amendment? They are not the majority even in Arizona. But I still think it's going to be somewhat of an uphill battle for him in that one topic and what he was prepared for it. And we discussed it. And there was nothing shocking. That came out of discussion. I just don't know if I necessarily agree that Arizonans are as prepared to get behind some of the movements and measures that he has been advocating for for years, and will that topic help or hurt him in his rates for the Senate? I don't know. I mean, his path is cleared on the democratic side. He's going to be the nominee as far as everyone can tell. So it's only. The general election to concern himself with now if you missed any of that interview with Mark Kelly again, he's running for.

"Let's jump right into it as we speak. Joining us in studio, he has Mark Kelly democratic candidate for Senate in twenty twenty Mr Kelly can I want to start by just getting away from a syntax. How how should I refer to you as I've referred you as commander, and I was called on the carpet that I should refer to you. As captain. You can call me anything I'd prefer Mark just not Scott who was my fair enough. Okay. Have you the proper differs people may know, you as an astronaut they know you as the husband of congresswoman Gabby giffords. Yes. But they may not new Mark Kelly is help us understand who is Mark Kelly. Well, I. I think it's helps the star with my parents, my parents were both public servants. They were both police officers in New Jersey and my grandfather served in World War Two. I went went into the navy when I graduated from college, and I served in the navy for twenty five years. I was a combat pilot, flew and operation Desert Storm. I was a test pilot became an astronaut while I was a Lieutenant in the navy. I served in the astronaut office for fifteen years and between my first and second spaceflights is when I met my wife. Gabby giffords on a trip to China believe it or not, and she was like, no other woman, I met before she invited me on a date and our first date was to the floor and state prison and nothing says love say prison. Your your your story is fascinating, sir. In in. You've you've lived many a lifetime. So what do you what do you see as the pressing issues for AirAsia because you're looking to go into politics, and you don't really need to do that. Obviously, it seems like a calling to you. So as we begin to learn what kind of candidate you're going to be in what you represent. I like you to give me the three things you think is the most pressing issues facing Arizona right now. So let me just back up. I'll get to that in a second. So, you know, as a as a public servant, you know. I served served our country in one way I saw Gabby. You know in a different light how she used public policy to improve people's lives. And after what happened to her in January twenty eleven we start an organization to try to try to deal with this issue of gun violence, and a lot of ways very successfully leading up to after the two thousand sixteen election as Gabby, and I would travel around the state people often ask me about this running for office. But on election night, November this past November twenty eight eighteen I was down at the van Buren. Gabby and I were watching the gin blossoms young woman comes up to me and says says, hey, my son. Has down syndrome, and I'm terrified that some days. He is going to lose his health insurance. Would you please consider running for the US Senate? So is that it was at that point that actually made me start to really seriously consider this because to get to your point. You know, what what people what what Arizona and stick about every single day is what's going to happen to their healthcare coverage. Are they going to get kicked off because they get sick or they not going to be able to get coverage for pre existing condition. That is a major issue that Washington DC is not addressing in a smart way. Do you support them Medicare for all? Well, I think everybody has a right as as a country as wealthy as ours. We should be able to provide affordable healthcare that people are going to be able to get if they're sick. If they have a pre existing condition like this like this young son of this mother that they're not gonna lose if they later get sick. And they're not going to reach some cap, and they get kicked off of we should be able to do that in a in an effective way. He is captain Mark Kelly. I'm gonna throw the captain in there for a candidate for Senate in twenty twenty. The you didn't bring it up. I'm going to bring it up the issue that is certainly top of mind for a lot of people right now is immigration ebbs and flows. But it certainly at up a boil for lack of better terms. How do you see the problem? And as a Senator if you were elected how how do you go about fixing or addressing the issue of immigration this country? Well, it's immigration. It's also border security, and it's been an issue for twenty years. We've been talking about this one thousand nine hundred eighty six we've spent. Two hundred and sixty three billion dollars on border security somewhat ineffectively, you know, this this last month. The increase in the number of people the apprehensions are up. It is a major issue that needs to be addressed. I think it's fair to let the experts what are the solutions that they're proposing the head of the Tucson sector. You know, he recently said that he what he would like to see is. I think this is smart more infrastructure, more staffing and more technology, especially at the ports of entry. And Washington DC has not been good at dealing with the issues that we here in Arizona have to face every single day on the southern border. Yeah. It doesn't seem as though there's a political will right now to to actually get something done with immigration. We hear the president. We hear our own governor talk about congress to act congress into congress needs to act, and we had congressman Schweickart on earlier today that pretty much said don't hold your breath because there's not that will right now for sides to work together. How would you work together in the Senate with Republicans on this issue? I mean, leaving it to the experts I get that. But, but what is your position on it right now because this is an issue that is really gaining so much momentum's. Yes. It hasn't been addressed for decades and billions of dollars have been spent. But it seems as though we're kicking the can down the road. If you could stop kicking, the can how would you do it? Well, here's the thing. You know, we've just become so partisan both sides, and what what we need here in Arizona's we need independent leadership. Folks, we elect to office who will work across the aisle work across party lines. To to accomplish the things that we all can agree about. And certainly over the last month the influx of apprehensions at the southern border and the ability for border patrol to deal with this. It's reaching the stages. I think it's fair to say it's a crisis. I think you would have some out there that are proud to hear folks on that side of the aisle, the democratic side of the alcohol at of Craig, and Pamela, let me also say that that the way we've been handling it the way Washington DC has been handled handling this where we've been separating children from their parents. It's not who we are the nation. It's completely an immoral thing to do to lock kids up essentially in jail cell for coming here and seeking asylum. We need more immigration judges at the southern border and the border patrol needs the infrastructure and the support from Washington DC to effectively deal with this Washington DC is not only been failing Arizona, it's been failing the border patrol sounds like so much commonsense. I don't know where the heck you think you're gonna get anywhere with that. That is Mark Kelly candidate for Senate in two thousand twenty I have a question for you, your presumptive. I'm making some assumptions the person you would be running against is a Senator mcsally who herself also served. She was a Colonel in the air force. You're a captain in the navy will your military backgrounds will be I'm going to. I'll use the words. You don't have to the mutual respect that people who served our country half for one another. Is there a chance that this can be a higher brow type of a race the type of race where there is a basic respect for at least the service that both of you have given our country. I certainly hope so you know, I've I've served with members of the United States Air Force not only while I was in the navy. You know, as when you're flying in combat over Iraq and Kuwait, you know, early nineties we often would do this in a joint way of I have so much respect for members of the United States Air Force. It's also a little bit of a rivalry. Sure. I'll have a lot of respect for Senator mix. Sally for her. Services an eight ten pilot. We both kind of had similar mission when we were combat pilots in our respective services. So yeah, I certainly hope that's the case. I do want to give you the opportunity though to acknowledge it. It's much harder to land on a ship than on the ground. Well, landing on an aircraft carrier is challenging, but you know, we all have our challenges in all different parts of the military here here, sir. Thank you for spending time with us today. Well, thank you for having me on really appreciate it. We hope that you can come back. And hey, there's going to be a lot of issues over the next year year and a half of this campaign. And we we may have some more questions for happy to come on anytime. Thank you. Thank you. That is captain Mark Kelly candidate for Senate in twenty twenty. You're going to be hearing a lot more from him. A lot more.
