"Energy joining me now on our i advantage hotline mark johnson the voice of the colorado buffaloes mark. I'm glad we have you on with us. Man because i these schedules my brain's about to explode. I just saw the news on the football side of things are moving from friday to saturday. See you and utah's that right. That is correct now so instead of a late evening game. Seven thirty kickoff on friday night. It'll be breakfast with buffaloes because we're gonna kick off at ten o'clock mountain time. Am on saturday morning with your time. So it won't be an evening. Snow is going to be a morning at a snow now for the bus news. I also saw you know getting the reports to well. What about the washington. Oregon side of things to we're we're keeping our eyes on that game that takes us to a broad discussion about the pac twelve in general but man there. There's still a lot to happen mark before we even get to some of these kickoffs. Listen i I count on nothing For any one of our broadcasts intel. I see either the tip off the opening kickoff. And that's what i know is actually gonna happen. I i I am you know. Rental line george burns much study said. I'm sold on everybody green bananas you know and kind of feel the same way i count on nothing until i'm actually seeing the game starting so then that's just the way it is in two thousand twenty mark. What have you heard. Have you heard any discussion. I mean again. We just talked about rescheduling moving from friday to saturday. So it's going to happen. But was there any discussion that the pac twelve might say. You know what we'd rather try to make a play that game they were supposed to play. Because that's the game that everybody wants. That's the game that should decide everything. Yes that conversation has been had by everybody but the people make decisions the pac twelve. Yeah it brady. It's perplexing i. I did a couple of shows salt lake city this morning and every time we were talking about that very topic and you know that's no Slight against the utah. Any way shape or form. This game should be colorado and usc just like a couple of weeks ago it have been colorado in washington when column washington and utah sitting out opponent. It should have been the boss playing washington because again every decision that is made this year all the time anyway but specifically this year every decision should be made. What's best for the conference. How do you put one of your programs in the best position to have itself in the conversation with the college football playoffs so two weeks ago. It should have been caught up in washington. One of them comes out of an undefeated and then whoever's left you try and get them matched up other leagues have done this. That's what happened with notre dame and north carolina. Here a couple of weeks ago and the acc they were altering their schedule to put one of their teams in the best position..

"Welcome back. Good afternoon five minutes. After one o'clock thanks for being with us. Whole against joining us now on the first advantage hotline voice of the colorado buffaloes and i think i could say collectively between football and men's basketball the undefeated colorado buffaloes mark johnson joining us. Mark my friend. Great to catch up with you. All i do is win my friend. I don't recall victories. Every few is bad as two thousand and twenty has been refused to call anything but victory is that did you put that in. Your new contract was that it is. It's a loss. I'm just gonna stop talking. I think so. Have you got on saturday. Games or laws is. I've just going to drop the mic and just walk up and like so mark. Tell first off. I want to get some of the bigger news today too but last week was absolutely nuts for you as far as the travel schedule with basketball football. And you weren't even really sure where you were going to be when we talked last time. Not really knowing what was going to happen with game situation. yeah know. where did i know who we were gonna play right as it turned out. So yeah we're you know had a little trip over to called a couple of basketball wins there which preparing for us thing in football and found out thanksgiving night. I was sitting at all fat and happy after thanksgiving meal like everybody else found out. We were playing. Usc that i have are later. Replace ago state so got scrambling with that game preparation and then on friday after calling a basketball game drove all night long. Our trip back here got tested on saturday morning and they let me on after tested negative and away we went with the san diego state game so it was Yeah it was a little bit of an interesting trip out. There did some pheasant hunting in between games and and all it was all good when it was all said good for the soul out there and do some pheasant hunting right. I mean with all this going on. It's just a your post. I don't even need to do it. Because i'll see your pictures and i feel like i'm right there with you. I'm glad i can. You know what it is much much less expensive for. You just do enjoy. That's true actually pay for it like i have to. Yeah and you wouldn't have to deal with somebody that doesn't know anything about what they're doing it all so yes it's better for both parties mara all right so a men's basketball news buff set to resume operations and saturday's game is on as scheduled that was. That was kind of an interesting quick turnaround. It was not totally surprised. However you know. I've been obviously in contact with a program All week long new testing they were doing and how things were were kind of unfolding and then you know after they got came back got a positive test one of the players well then They began testing everybody. Obviously and i think Talked to somebody the team who said they were. I think it was thirty. Six hours have been tested eight times and so there was just nonstop testing to see okay. Anybody else spreading are we gonna have another positive tests and as it turns out. They haven't had any so now they can go back to playing which will be on saturday. Obviously now the shawn schwartz the guy that was the first to test positive. That was what the day before thanksgiving her..

"By energy and joining us now. The voice of the colorado buffaloes mark johnson and markelle. You gotta feel lucky man. I mean we're we're all the teams we talk about as far as college basketball in this show. Unc's pausing activity cs. You paused activities. Last week and the buffs are set to go man. At least at least as far as we know at this stage well is the way it looks. Now the question will be. Who are they gonna play You know there are some questions around. Usc brady and i just saw just a few minutes ago. The jon wilner is reporting that if the buffs cannot play. Usc that it would be sad. San diego state in los angeles. And so i look you had heard that or not yet so at least there's some breaking news show but that's a possibility out there because colorado certainly doesn't want to be sitting idle two weeks in a row When it's not their issue when it's somebody else's issue so they will be on the field at some point this weekend. I just don't know if it's going to be On saturday night lawyer sunday. La wow again. This is so difficult to track at this stage market. You just never know. But yeah. For the buffs. Started the season just a couple of weeks ago. Started off red hot to know. So you're yeah you're desperately looking for a game if that. Usc game doesn't happen. Yeah certainly. san. Diego stays pretty good football team so it would be conference You know initially. I had talked to some folks yesterday that we're thinking that if you couldn't go he was gonna be colorado and washington. I wasn't clear whether that was going to be a home game. A road game. They were gonna play the huskies and then of course when arizona state issues continued they. teamed up washington with utah. You didn't want you know utah sitting there with only one game at this point and go another week without playing. And so that's why they teamed up utah and washington. And i think then the wheels began to turn find in colorado a potential Mate out there even if they had a lotta conference which is where san diego state apparently came. Wow this is stay tuned right mark. Everything like this..

What is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier all about?

"You're listening to the how in the world podcast we unravel some of the planet's most perplexing questions about ten minutes. Nope we're not scientists or scholars. We're just normal. People like to figure things out. Sometimes inspiring sometimes informative. Our topics are always fascinating hosted by me mark johnson and my lovely wife me holly johnson. We do the research. So you don't have to veterans day. Twenty twenty was last week and we were watching the ceremony on tv where. The president laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. And i had so many so boom. That's how ideas for episodes are born in fact we've had a bunch of ideas recently. I'm not sure what that means. Maybe we've been watching too much. Tv or something. Well have been a lot of events and things going on and questions. Raise like veterans day and christmas. Coming in the spacex mission to the international space station and like our seventh grader pete. Yeah he's just a few good questions lately. And i've got all them in my notes so we'll get to them but before we get to today's episode. I have to mention my favorite veteran dad. Although he passed away ten years ago. I think of every day. He was my hero the very best dad ever in the world. No offence sweetie men take. He was a great guy he was. He had a really interesting time. While in the army. Interesting about the only word. I could come up with their first as a model for army promotional posters literally a poster boy then as a member of general macarthur's honor guard where he hung out with the general and his wife watching movies every friday night. That was a very cush job. But then crap got real when he became a forward observer in the korean war. That's the guy who's part of a team of three who go ahead of the rest of the group in radio back until then where the enemy lines are and stuff. It's a very dangerous job. Maybe the most dangerous in the military at that time yes indeed but he came home then and he met my mom and they had me. Yea so thanks for indulging me a moment to recognize him. Okay let's get to it. I the basics. The tomb of the unknown soldier is in arlington national cemetery and strangely enough. I've never been there. I know the air and space museum. So well i could give tours. But we never went to arlington national. I'm i'm ashamed really. You're mad my school for never taking us there. I don't know but we we've got to do this on our own. We definitely will. The tomb actually contains and unknown soldier from world war. One who was buried ride underneath a memorial which is made of marble like everything in dc tomorrow and the city. It has six wreaths carved into the sides three on the opposite two sides that represent the six major campaigns of world war one on the third side. There are three. Greek figures carved these figures represent peace victory in valor and on the fourth side contains the inscription here rests in honored glory in american soldier known but to god. That's just beautiful. The memorial also referred to as tomb of the unknowns actually has no official name president. Warren g harding officiated the ceremony. That laid this first soldier to rest on veterans day november eleventh nineteen twenty one the tomb of the unknowns generally refers to four tombs world war one world war two korea and vietnam. Three other soldiers were interred in tombs. Right beside the memorial. Those unknown soldiers represent world war two korea and vietnam although the soldier representing the vietnam war was removed once. Dna analysis identified him and he was returned to his family in nineteen ninety eight. He'd only been there like four years or something. The vietnam tomb now intentionally remains empty and is a monument. Honoring all of america's missing servicemen and. Women that's awesome. Yeah one of the questions. I've always had about the tomb of the unknowns. Is how they got the soldier so there's not just one unknown soldier in a war right. I mean. aren't there many. They're just one. And how did they choose this one who would be buried there and where are the rest so tell us about that. Honey yes. That's a great question that i've had to which means probably a lot of you have wondered about it as well for the first memorial. The the world war one memorial they uninsured four soldiers that had been buried in france. They put each in an identical casket and then a decorated wounded. Combat soldier made the choice from these four identical caskets at a city hall in france. He chose the third from the left. And signified is choice by laying white roses on top of that casket. That's the soldier who is in the tomb in dc. The other three were reinterred in france. That's the process that's been used to select the unknown for each tomb and yes there are plenty of unknowns. Buried all over the world.

How does the Electoral College work?

"This week's episode answers the question. How in the world does the electoral college pick our president. You're listening to the how in the world podcast we're we unravel some of the planet's most perplexing questions in just about ten minutes nope we're not scientists or scholars. We're just normal people who like to figure things out. Sometimes inspiring sometimes informative. Our topics are always fascinating hosted by me mark johnson and my lovely wife me holly johnson. We do the research so you don't have to well. Today is thursday november fifth twenty twenty. And it's been a quiet couple of days around here in the. Us assure was there was something on tv to incessantly. Watch and keep checking my phone about What could that possibly be wrong. Oh how about the twenty twenty elections. It's been a wild couple of days folks in it. Looks like it could be wild for a bit longer. So let's all practice are deep breathing and relaxation methods together. Bring your popcorn as the time that we're recording this. I believe the elections come down to maybe four states that haven't yet counted all of their votes but once they're done it's still not over no not even close because once all the votes are counted will know what the results of the popular vote are. But we won't officially know yet. Who won this election. And that's because not only will there be a ton of lawsuits than we unto way through but also because we don't elect our president based on the popular. Vote like you would in the classroom election elementary school. We use the electoral college. And i've always been a little foggy about the electoral college. So i'm glad recovering this today because it forced me to dig deeper really kind of learn about it or you could have just asked your wife who by the way is a political scientist by education. You know yeah. I've been told that. Before so i get a little invested in presidential elections and the preceding debates and political discussion. So what it's fascinating and also frustrating and maddening and kinda stupid also but so fascinating the strategy. He's not even close anyway. Let's talk about the electoral college. Yup that's why we're here. So let's do it and by the way we're going to refrain from any partisan right discussion. This is just about the electoral college. You won't know who we voted for. So for starters you know how annoying all of those census ads and like postcard mailers and mail and information and more ads and everything was reminding us. How important is that we fill out our census form so that everyone is counted yet. And i remember seeing a ton about the census recently. But i believe you filled out the form. Since you're our families designated form filler outer am. I joined it because again i am a political scientist so data and surveys and stuff like that matters anyway. The census is used to determine a lot of things most notably funding to your state for certain services. So if you have a disproportionate number of school aged kids for example it tells the. Us government that you'll need a disproportionate amount of funding for schools. I mean that's really dumbing. It down but funding is a biggie. And doesn't also tell you how many representatives you'll get in the. Us house it does so every state gets two senators so there are a total of one hundred senators in the us senate but representatives are totally different because their allocated based on the census count. Yes they are. There's always four hundred and thirty five of them. No more no less. But how they're allocated can change. So if everyone emptied out of california which currently has fifty three districts and therefore fifty-three representatives and moved to wyoming which currently has just one representative. Those numbers would turn on their head. And by the way. Alaska delaware montana and north and south dakota and also vermont have just one representative yes and there are also some non voting delegates in the hell. They can do everything. The voting members can do except vote. Hence the name right. They can introduce bills and participate in committees Currently there is a delegate representing washington. Dc as well as one each for puerto rico. American samoa guam the northern mariana islands. And the us virgin islands. They're also talking about adding a delegate from the cherokee nation and from the choctaw nation which is super cool. Yeah it really is. And the senate and house together are called congress and there are a total of five hundred thirty five members of congress. So that's that hundred senators and the four hundred and thirty five representatives. Each state has the same number of electoral college votes. That they have congressmen or women which means each state has a minimum of three electoral college members. Two senators one representative three so for the the smaller less populated states. They're still going to have three electoral college members.

"And a good leader inspires. A good leader gives hope and purpose for the organization for their group of people. How do you do that well. You know the big way to do that. is you. Create a vision for organization. You create a vision for your people. And i would say in the middle of a crisis. Yes you've got all these things that you like. You said you can't even look past the next couple of days but on the other side of it. People are hurting. People are wondering where things are going to shake out. And so you know we've gotta be able to kind of like holding onto the iron rod. We gotta give him the path. We got a late in so actually vision almost becomes more important than ever. It doesn't mean you have to spend all your time developing the vision right. I mean you kind of develop the vision and then you work that back to what. What does that mean. We're going to have our north star. We're not gonna get buffeted all over the place. We know where we're heading first and foremost with the gospel. We know were heading but we know were heading. You know kind of in this. Temporal way through the vision we set. That's in keeping with the gospel but then we need to that. We need to get to well. How are we gonna make it to their especially with all this crisis going on so it gives you an opportunity to again. Make sure that you're not doing all these urgent things at the expense of. Maybe there's some vital things you're not thinking about that are gonna creep up twelve to eighteen months from now that you actually should be planning now about to anticipate them coming to fruition. You know there's the great sports analogy are quote from. You know that wayne. Gretzky the canadian hockey player. He didn't skate to where the puck was. He skated to where the puck was going. You know and i think there has to be some of that even in the middle of crisis you have to say we know where we're going. I mean we may not perfectly know where we're going but we roughly no are going and whether there's a pandemic or not doesn't change where we're we're heading so we have to do some of that planning and we have to have that northstar in place because otherwise were were just like you said we're completely reacting in an all that reaction you know. I think can kinda come some on of dangers of giving up or feeling like you're never gonna make it or just not getting hopeful. So you didn't that hopeful north star and and really what i've learned from you today. Is that when something like this happens. You know crisis or disruption like this. It's easy to think what we have to rethink our vision. But it's just the the narrative or context that changed and that doesn't mean you have to change your your vision but you need needed. Consider changing your strategy right. Exactly how you're going to get there might have to change. Yeah that's really helpful. We'll martin anything else. We haven't covered her now. This is great. I appreciate you me on yeah. No it's been fun so if people do want to learn more about your book. And i haven't been a good host of mentioning but lead from the future to turn visionary thinking to break breakthrough growth. Where if they want to learn more about the booker you where would you send him while one is you know we have some background on the book future back. Leadership dot com all one word or think. The books available on amazon amazon dot com. And you know you could email me. Also directly at a. m. johnson insight dot com awesome. Well this has been fantastic and and the last question remark is as you consider your time sort of being having a lifelong career as a student of leadership and being a leader. How is being a leader in that field. Made you better disciple or follower of jesus. Christ i think the biggest ways it's giving me the ability to think what really it allows me to think more with perspective right to not let too much what's happening now. Get me down that there's a. There's a longer term horizon about that just like you know. We say that this is a fairly short part of our eternal journey so being able to think in that longer term time dimension just helps i think me personally you know in. It's not something that. I i still have to practice it. But but you know make this separation about what's really urgent versus what's really vital. And you know not over indexing too much on today because we have to be kind of looking onward and upward ripe which is really what the gospel is all about. That concludes my interview with mark johnson. A big shout to him and so grateful for him bringing his His knowledge and perspective to this podcast and talking about these principles in the context of being a church leader and again thank you to jane. Clayson johnson is well for the interview. She did a year ago or so. If you haven't listened that one it'd be fun to Also look that one up. "Saints dot org slash subscribe and that will get you on the newsletter as well. This interview is with mark. Johnson who is the author of lead from the future. How to turn visionary thinking into breakthrough growth. He's a fantastic. Latter day saint at protege of the well known late clayton christianson. So we talked about clayton christianson a little bit. But he's also married to somebody. Famous somebody by the name of jane clayson johnson and the well known former guest of the leading saints podcast. And we talk about not only his Not only marx conversion experience which happened through the help of clay christianson but also being meeting a celebrity and dating a celebrity and then then marrying her and went so fun conversation but also we get into the weeds of strategy innovation and envision really fun discussion. These are the ones i geek over. And i hope you over it as well. So here is my interview. With mark. Johnson the author of lead from the future. How to turn visionary thinking into breakthrough growth. Today i'm talking with mark johnson through the powers of zoom. How are you mark. i'm good kurt. Thanks for having me. Yeah no. I've been looking forward to this discussion and if recently reviewed your book in your late latest book. I know you've written a few but maybe for people are familiar with you and your background. How would you introduce yourself while ken. Great to be here mark johnson. I my background is. Let's see i was. I grew up in south florida. I always had a desire to try to fly off aircraft carriers. So i did who had could help you get that way and become an aerospace engineer. Went to the naval academy at the naval academy and my eyes didn't stay twenty twenty so the flying aspiration sort of went by the wayside. Because i didn't want to the backseat of of these fighter aircraft. I wanted to actually fly the plant so You know. I went the next best thing as an engineer. Which i thought was the naval nuclear power program and i spent three years on a ship after the naval academy the uss mississippi and was in the first gulf war. You know we were. We were a guided missile cruiser. That supported the carriers and the carrier. Battlegroup and i did that for three years then went to washington for my shorty. Found out of the navy was making some major changes. So i got out of the navy after about a total of eight years in the navy because i had some graduate school within there as well and decided that the part that really inspired me. The technical and engineering part was interesting. You know the nuclear power understanding in my engineering background. But what really. I enjoyed was leadership. And you know folks that are in divisions on the ship and you know different opportunities to to manage and so i thought well as a as a officer coming out you know. How would i best transition to. What i thought would be sort of leadership in the business world. And that's when. I went to harvard business school in the mid nineties and i met one of our church members who sadly passed away recently clayton christianson took a course of his trying to keep this all relatively short. So we we We spend time together. I took one of his inaugural courses on managing innovation. It really inspired me. Not just about the content the subject of of of what clay taught him as a human being and so i stayed in touch with him. After i left her business school and i had gone to a consulting firm called whos allen hamilton but i stayed close with him and long story. Short is when his book came out in the late. Nineties called the innovators dilemma. I had suggested that maybe there is a way for us to do something together because it was an important message for for companies and their challenges to stay viable and not get disrupted in so. We ended up doing some things together in the late nineties. That led up to finally starting a company together in january of two thousand called insight. And that's really where i've been ever since in With clay the hallway and his passing in january of this year so and he was instrumental in your conversion to the church. How did that story begin. That's right well you know it starts some of these things start with seeds planet in an impression of goes for all of us You know it started with his example and it started with the understanding of his character and his kindness. When i was taking a course in the mid nineties at at harvard business school in it also led me to to gravitate towards him. Because of all that. I think you know not just from a professional collaboration but but just as someone i looked up to in And so. I think i was had the seats planet of curiosity about his faith back in the you know the first time i met them basically and so we interacted for all those years of the ninety five to two thousand until we started the company. It wasn't only probably a couple of months into you. Know kind of having accompanied together that he approached me and asked me if i wanted to Take the discussions. You know. Meet the missionaries of which. I was very open. I didn't think i was going to necessarily change in my faith. But i very open to hear what made him tick our thought. I would learn a lot more about what made him tick by by following his suggestion and enlisting the missionaries which so happened to be missionaries. That taught me in the home of clayton christine so they were there to to be participants in that was that was in june of two thousand so six after we started the company and you know the process of conversion and in the process of faith started there were really wonderful experiences that led to know at least in those days. Maybe it still happens on the second discussion asking. If i want to be baptized he saying yes. I actually said yes but in my mind you know it was interesting. It was very spiritual experience that happened right then and there. Because i had this strong. Maybe it was the spirit. You know kind of confirming up up important principle truth but i just had the strong feeling that it would be very special to make a covenant to the lord the lord to make a promise to me and i i didn't really have a full understanding of the way i did now but i had whenever the spirit was teaching may but in that process. I thought okay. That's great do that commitment and that's really special in the ordinance of baptism. But i didn't have any plans that i had to join an organized. Religion like the church of jesus. Christ latter-day saints. So i think. I even said to the missionaries. I would be glad to be baptized in..

"Auto Collision Special Studios, and joining me now on our hotline Mark Johnson, the voice of the Colorado Buffaloes, mark, my friend. What do we know about the PAC twelve schedule and then we got to look deeper more specifically what what's next for C.. You. Well in terms of the schedule nothing at this point and I was really figuring they probably have it that by mid week this week. So I at least hopeful that Thursday or Friday this week maybe that comes out because we're a little month away from the sissies don't getting underway. So that's where we're kind of holding pattern in that regard and in regards to win practice would start I. Guess October eighth is win the order by the county of Boulder, would fall out of the fact you will, and so I think that's what they're gonNa Start and so That's that's about rat right now is just kind of you know hurry waiting. I guess like the old saying goes. What's interesting too is, yes. We have the PAC twelve. We're still waiting for the schedule but boulder specifically as you just mentioned. There a little tighter on the restrictions with the gathering. So that's something were as you said, we're waiting on to see what that looks like for for the buffs specifically and I if I'm quite certain that if there is any potentialities for. Getting an exemption in regard like we've seen around the country in different areas of of the nation vector when when certain restrictions come down, there are exemptions I'm certain that Rick George and his folks the administration we working on that kind of thing I, think there is some opportunity because you're looking what the testing within just got an announcement obviously this morning for the PAC twelve about Do Partnership with extended testing for detail testing is so you know they're they're doing things within the Athletic Department of that conference above and beyond what any municipality be doing with the student athletes and staff members and support staff and everybody around. Still you would think there'd be an opportunity for some sort of example, they go on there and then allow them to maybe have. A little freer rein to have workouts practices but I guess that's to be determined. No question about it says still a lot of variables out there and Mark I. Don't know when we knew we start getting our hopes up. We're going to have we're going to have that football game right that first weekend for for Colorado, and then we start talking about Karl wral and what this team is maybe going to look like. Always, with Carlin Friday on campus. We did a few. Interviews been heading social media with Tad and Carl and Rick George and and he's really excited I mean he is jacked about this wrapping up the interview and I said something along the lines of you know, hey, I can't wait to finally see you know to get out there in the field and actually have a team to coach and he goes back into this is going to be fun I guarantee you that. so He seems very excited at optimistic. About what kind of team? He's GonNa put on the field and and so you hope that that's based in reality and not just at this point because we've been gone for so long offer. So long in any real football, it's just you know hope out there and I believe curls such a veteran coach, it probably the former, not the latter. So I'm excited about it I. Think we should be excited. You say, when when did we start? I think we can be excited right now I mean, it's it's on the schedule. We're seeing other leagues with a Little Blip here and there obviously what we just saw on the NFL certainly is reminded that things can get shut down rather quickly. But with that being said, it is in large part moving forward in college athletics and College football and pro football and so. I'm I'm extremely I think at this point confident that come November six or seven that weekend whenever the schedules look like we're going to have some PAC twelve necessarily call them on the football. We're talking to mark Johnson the voice of the Colorado Buffaloes and we kind of coach. Do you think our? We'll Carl Durell be for the buffs what's what's going to be that? That that thing that defines him going forward. Obviously, we will have to learn a lot about him in the upcoming season's it's going to be a strange season this year it would be anyway even if it wasn't pandemic, it's the first year you don't really get an idea of what that coach is going to be like until you get him with his guy so to speak but. Initially what kind of coach you think he's going to be well, I'll tell you there's some you know it's not like I've spent and I was we were kind of chuckling about this normally by this point in time I, would have spent a great deal of time around the new head coach. They had all sorts of events we would've done together and there would have been. Numerous conversations just the two of US sitting in his office. Well, none of that's happened because he got the job at about two we I basketball at about two weeks later, all the sudden shutdown I think I saw him on whatever that Bundy was march fifteenth or Sixteenth I. Saw Him because we don't interview together and then I don't know that I saw him in person again. I suppose about a month ago month and a half ago is that the next time I actually saw him in person so you know we haven't spent any time together. So this is just me reading the tea leaves. You know kind of answer, your question here I, think wh-. What he is is a steady hand everything I've seen with him and all the people that I've worked with him. He's not a reactionary guy. He's very steady guy in terms of never getting too high and low doesn't over react to things there's an intensity about him. Which I've witnessed, we've had some conversations where I asked him about certain things and there's been a city I've gotten back and so think that's going to be part of his makeup, and then the fact that he has been in a pack twelve head coaching seat gone through bad gone to the NFL had many years where he was a high ranking and assistant coach and on a few different franchises and I think he's learned a little bit about An. Okay. That that measured response to things I don't think he I'd like I said, I don't think he overreacts any way shape or form it. So I, my guess is that's the way he will handle things that that intensity there's a quietness and calmness when you hear him talk that he's a little bit like can't boiled regard in you guys in everyone agrees early familiar with that Tad when you have a conversation about as going as you guys you can be. And then when you see that that kind of fire inside a blow up every once in a while, his competitiveness of intensity I, think that really speaks to a team every time. So my sense is Carl's a similar kind of guy in that regard just in terms of their older old demeanor and ultimately how inside there's there's a little bit of a little bit of fire. A little bit of competitiveness jumps up every once in a while you kind of get the sense of okay. This guy's not messing around. So my sense is that's the kind of coach. He's back mark again it's a weird time and like you said, discussions have been. Certainly interesting to what you'd normally be prepping for..

Cars Shot Up, Church Windows Damaged By Gunfire In Albany Park, Chicago

"Police looking for those responsible for shooting up cars and buildings in the Albany Park neighborhood yesterday, police say up to 30 shots were fired around two o'clock yesterday morning near Troy and Belle Plaine Avenue resident Mark Johnson's car was hit with several rounds. I'm more concerned. For these thes kids that are in their young teens and twenties and think that this is a lifestyle that's acceptable. It's not, and it will destroy them and destroy their families. Well, there was damage to several cars in a church building. No one was injured

"Minutes after the hour. Welcome back to the whole show. Power PDC energy. I'm live from the in special studios. Thanks for being with us here. Well, PAC twelve yesterday the PAC twelve CEO group voted unanimously Tuesday to postpone all sports including football and basketball through the end of the year, and we're seeing this throughout the country conferences The domino effect continues joining me now the voice of the Colorado Buffaloes Mark Johnson mark tough. Tough news the last couple of weeks I mean we started off. I. Think last to last week talking to Darren done with you and see about the Big Sky Conference and then then we saw the mountain west. conference. And now, of course, the PAC twelve side of things difficult difficult day difficult last couple of weeks, football fans and football players and programs all across the nation. And Nightmares for play by play guys. I've just been sitting in my office. I've got to fight song a loop. I've just been listening to twenty four hours now. What are you GonNa? What are you going to be I mean I could play madden broadcast playing madden. Cool SO folks I. Got A job working the drive through. It McDonalds up here in Evergreen Colorado. Get Ready Man. I'll give you good. I'm Daniel take a big packet a large. Touchdown. Right. I'll just get one of those self guys guys over ordering you can even. Go with that. I think that'd be all right man. I tell you what breading gets crazy. Deal I I. I was I was not surprised yesterday, but but even though full knowledge I was shocked. That they actually pulled the trigger on Guy I'd go. With. A friend of mine said to me Overlooking down the muzzle of a gun they actually voted to pull the trigger. Thought it was a great great line and and it's it's amazing to me. I the number one thing I don't understand is why yesterday what was magical about? What was yesterday the eleventh? August eleventh. John Wilner who? for the San Jose Mercury and Mercury News, and who might be as informed as anybody in the PAC twelve I thought he laid out a couple of days before that an interesting time line pushed all the regular season to start on October twenty fifth or twenty, four thousand. And I thought well, that's interesting. They didn't have to make a decision yesterday. They didn't have to kill the college football season yesterday they could've backed. Ready. When we're talking, it changes literally day by day and so they could pushed back and then even more can just confusing for me is why you had to kill the member in December college basketball. I I was like, what? Where did that come from? Why did you do that? You know they're talking about the student athletes virtually every university in America is going to send their students off campus for Thanksgiving and they're not coming back. So you had college basketball teams on an empty campus. There have been total control on those players and yet he'll wipe that off the books as well, which is just mind boggling today. So there's so much about this is I just can't quite understand. I obviously all of it is difficult to understand, but you're seeing the fall sports. Okay. I, get it. I'm not crazy about it. I I'M GONNA I'll go along but yes, seeing the PAC twelve side of things where, Hey, we're gonNA move basketball to through the through the end of the year. You're exactly right I mean that. This decision. This football decision seemed like it took forever to come up with and yet we were able to pull the trigger. So quickly on basketball I, it's mind boggling you're exactly right. Here's here's the other thing. I think that's confusing to me, and that is this I'm not. I'm not the smartest guy in the world never claimed to be I'm not a scientist. I'm not a doctor but one thing that you know my entire educational going through and getting my Undergrad college was about science in about mathematics. There are things that are very logical. Right they they follow the date of the dateable lead you where you need to go. We're told all the time in modern society follow the science. Okay. Fine. If that's the case how in. The world do have doctors apparently, if you're kidding this data in the southern part of the country and over the midwest of the big twelve, you have those doctors have an entirely different view than if you live in the north of the West and I can't figure that out how do they have that I can understand where they might have. You know different shades. Of the same opinion right whatever that might be but but the have just one thing. No, it's not safe to play and the other end of the country says, no, no, it is safe to play with ABC and so I that confuses me as well. There's just a lot about this. I can't. But then again I guess we've been talking about this societal standpoint. I just can't get my head around it and explained. Is there such a diverse wide ranging extreme of viewpoint on on the same day to all the time, but I just can't quite understand. Spokespeople for spokesperson for the SEC saying, Hey, I'd like to know what data they're looking at because we we're still planning on going forward. I'd be curious to know what these other conferences are seeing because we're not seeing the same thing about is going to be interesting by the way and there could be good and bad on this. Okay. If we're standing here, let's say on November one. And College football is being played in the SEC ACC big twelve in the American athletic conference WH-.

"Online now without the opportunity. What direction can things go now? I'm not doing anybody to future. I'm just saying there's possibility out there that without that little leg up now the sudden you're affecting lives in a different way so I think it's fascinating, just looking at kind of like thirty thousand foot view of this entire thing. It's really start looking at were the. The ripple effects are yeah I mean on the prep sight of it to mark Johnson joining us the voice of the Colorado buffs you you look at the website i. saw guy, great friend of the stations Kevin Schafer posted on his preps radio network on Colorado's preps twitter and said Hey, there's a lot of kids in this area in the state in this country. That might reconsider staying in school if they can't play football. He can't play basketball I know that sounds strange, but I know a lot of people in my class growing up. That said Yeah I mean honestly. I, know exactly what I'm GonNa do the moment I graduate. I'm going to go work for my Dataman help. Run his business I'm going to work on the rigs. I'm going to get a farm. But I'M GONNA. Stay just so I can play football for one year and most of them say the same thing. I'm glad I did it. Oh that's. That's an enormous part of this. You know you and I haven't even touched on. The. Mental Health Issues I mean the suicides and Drugs and alcohol, which we already are going through the roof and and depression all these kind of things, so it's really it's I, know we can get emotional about a number that we see every day, and it's lives lost, and I understand that enters truth and every single comment made about that. That's not the only story that extra story at five feet go to thirty thousand feet, and start looking at this and really look at the broad picture on what's being affected out there, and then let's start looking at the real science. The raw data out what's happened again in Florida with all the garbage goes down there right now. Now, but let's look at the real stuff. Let's take all of that Info. We can get from countries all over the world sedans. Okay, what are we dealing with? And what is the now? There's probably going to be paying no matter what direction we go at and anybody. He's living life. No matter what your tough circumstance is, you look for the most efficient, the past panther go, and and maybe in the least painful want to go now I understand, but we're all gonNa have some suffering in some form or fashion going through this, but what's what's the smartest avenue? Advises Avenue to take, and then take that and then find ourselves on the other side of this, but. I know there's no easy answers I'm not saying there are just saying that this is a problem with that I'm not sure we're taking the proper large big picture view of times. Yeah I. Mean There's guys. I disagree with politically big time that actually come back and say hey. We can't be in a world where we just crawl into our are caves, and that's where we are a year and that, and that goes not just on the sports scene, but that goes in the business world as well, and that's at the end of the day. What what I fear is, are we just going to hope that it goes away by locking ourselves up and that's I don't think that's realistic either mark. You mentioned all before in here shown and you deal with them on a daily basis on the streets of Greeley. The books that you deal with the mom and pops out there that have got businesses. You know there's a life blood that that that helps them navigate and run those businesses right? That's true on a national scale is true on a global scale and when you cut that off, if we're just to walk and again are caves and sit there and wait, that lifeblood is cut off. You can't plug up. Our mouths and noses live expanded oxygen businesses, which one our lives there and help us then supply. Thanks for our lives also cannot have the oxygen cut off for any. Any period of time and exist and I think that's an important thing to think about because I. I know people always want to make them today through that comment. Oh, you're! You're equating lives with money. None of them I'm equating lives with lives here. Because ultimately on that financial side lives. You're going to be affected lives. You're going to be lost and you know that Dan is to be considered at least in the entire picture. This issue as well couldn't agree more. My friend as always well said by you and we'll see what happens next week. I'm sure a whole plate of new items will be on on the docket for us to discuss I just want to get back to. I know man. Director Rod Lurie on 'The Outpost'

"The new movie the outpost. It was the most downloaded film of the weekend, and it's an immersive experience. It's about an outpost in Afghanistan at the base of this valley. If you're just joining us, it was sort of a bizarre placement of this base. But what happened was there was a Taliban insurgency of massive proportion and the director of the film Rob Gloria's is talking with us. This was a true incident. It was chronicled in a book by Jake Tapper, and then you brought it to the screen. Yeah. Jake Tapper released that best selling book in 2012. It was great. You know, when I When I first time out to do it, I called Jake up and, you know, he just wants to talk movies. So I want to do is talk about politics. So we sort of have to divvy it up every time that way. Have a conversation just because you mentioned politics I want tojust also know this is not a political film at all. I mean, really like there's no, no, it's not Pro War antiwar, pro GOP Anti GOP Pro Democrats. Cetera. There's none of that. No, it's about it's about. We really focus on the eight dudes of lost our lives and the two living member to living survivors. By definition, They're living survivors who received the Medal of Honor. One is Ty Carter, played by Caleb Landry, Jones and the other Is Scott Eastwood on DH. He plays staff Sergeant Clint Roma Shay and And that's really worried for what it really is A chronicle of what happened in the battle and sort of the events that led up to it. I would tell you more than anything else. And you know you've got Orlando Bloom and it also it's funny that one should you know, Should you give everybody best haircut and the you know basic Army. Whatever that, you know, Whatever you call it, you lose track. I guess I'm trying to say of any celebrity in it all. It's all very immersive. How did you know that was clearly a desire on your part, too? You know these battle sequences and just the feeling over time is that we're actually there at the outpost. Well, you know, the one of the things that I did mark is that I shot most of most of the film every scene in one long tape in the battle sequences, things on these long, I think really fluid takes And so you know, there's you don't think you're in a movie. I don't think you don't see cutaways. You don't see You know Scotty's would shooting his weapon and then cut a bad guy going down. It's you know, it's all in the long fluid. Um, uh, shots and as a result, I think that you're you're deeply embedded in every scene. At least that's what we were. That's what we're going for. Well, All the reviews were saying the exact same thing isn't very well reviewed film. But I have to ask you, though, from a filmmaker's pinpoint as you're doing that all in one continuous shot. You have all of these things got here got bullets everywhere and you got stuff blowing up and you've got, you know, guys running this way and other people running that way and people climbing over, you know, I mean, there's a lot to choreographing end in one of those things doesn't happen. You gotta retake it again. Oh, so like, you know, that's exactly right. So we've got special effects. I mean, you already laid it all out on the special effects the actress to get it right. And I remember there was this one really, really magnificent Take That we did, and kid Landry Jones, who zeal just hauling ass hundreds of yards, and we're following in the hallway with the, uh you know this one camera and the camera operators exhausted when it's all done, but everyone we nailed it and everybody's cheering and high fiving and tight. Carter. The actual Medal of Honor winner is there and he's hugging and crying, and you got it exactly right and then our military experts Guy named Jericho Dem and comes up and says, No, no, no, no, no, You've got it all wrong. No, no, It's a mess back guy that I was holding his weapon like that doesn't look like one explosion. Supposed to look like I said them. Come on, man. It's a movie was okay. Well, if you want every military guy in America and the world elastic find, Okay. Let it all up again and do it again, You know, And that is the thing you you have to be loyal to story and also to the look of the film as He said before the break. You know you are connected to the military sort of in your own personal history. And obviously a lot of military people looking on this movie. Well, well, you know we've gotten look, I wrote an article today in the deadline and what I said was, it's really difficult to know the metrics of success are But to me how the veterans have reacted to this has been like, unbelievable. And and you know what Marc, also how the families of fallen reacted to this. That was really freaking way. Show them this movie last October, we flew them in the moms and the dads and the brothers and the You know the wives and the kids, and we don't know what they're gonna say after work, you know? The actual soldiers that were there, looking at the worst day of their lives depicted on screen. And these families are looking at their loved ones dying on screen. You know, a couple of people afterwards and you know, I I didn't realize they swore so much. Ah, but there was really in the end, very gracious. And they hugged us and they loved us because you know they're They're boys. They're men and their sons there. They're going to be remembered forever now and You know, That's not something every soldier gets. So you know, I know it sounds corny, more But you know, having been a soldier that is really it was really, really important to all of us. I think it's happened. The capper was a wreck that night, and it's really interesting to watch it because that guy's such a cool cookie when he's interviewing generals and senators and governors and ripping them new ones, and you know who he is, But you know, on a night like this It was a flop Sweating. So was so was I, but it was It was pretty amazing night. I mean, you have to. You really are trying to honor the memory of people and you're trying to honor those who fought so valiantly and the movie, I think does that with, you know, without knowing the history as deeply as you do, Obviously, I just I was riveted by it, and I think it's powerful, both emotionally and in every other way. The movie is called the Outpost. Rod Lurie is the director. It's got Orlando Bloom's got Eastwood mentioned Caleb Lander Jones as well, but it really transcends any kind of one performance. I think it's really one of those films that I was blown away by. So congratulations. Really nice job, Rod. Thank you, Marc. I I really really appreciate appreciate it. it. "Text Line is three one nine nine six three one nine nine six. We're we're continuing to navigate through what some of these leagues are going to do on both the professional and the college side of things waiting on more news to come out on the MLB side going back and forth on well now money really financially talking through with the players But on the college side. It's interesting to and on to talk with me a bit about that. Mark Johnson the voice of the Colorado Buffaloes Markelle here in what's going on with California. You're hearing a lot of that situation where they're still looking at online classes in the fall earlier than Wiki. Here Mark Emmett saying we're you know we're not gonNA if those those aren't in class or in person classes we're not gonNa have sports with those specific schools. So how does this impact our situation at this point boy? That's a great question and I think I've settled on on your show before you're gonNA have an entire university system state of California which is in Economic Dire Straits to begin with and we have heard so much in the last couple of years about cal antibiotics. Ucla and in some respects USC having all kinds of economic and financial issues athletically speaking. So now you're going to have you know whatever. The number is for those respective university. Thirty five forty thousand students taking online courses and I guarantee you no one's paying forty fifty grand a year. They got like working. And I just you know I said to you on this show on thumping about not just has led ex but economically A they say they country and institution whatever. It might be at some point in time. There's a pointed return where economically everything just falls apart. And and so I. I don't know how that's GonNa.

"We'll have the voice of the buffs Mark Johnson on the program here in just a moment talk to him about wh- what see you will look like next year. What a weird end to that to that team. There is such a great basketball team. You know from day one we talked about. Wow even their five guys off the bench probably be starting for top teams in the country and they they moved up got up to the top twenty five most of the year. I think they got US high up to sixteen. I want to say maybe even higher than that they were leading the pack twelve for a good chunk beat Oregon. Then they lose to Oregon. They had an opportunity again and then then they dropped their last six games or so their last five games in the regular season and then they lost to to Washington state in the first round of the PAC twelve tournament which we did get to that. Not a lot of the conference tournaments. Were able to start you know league in the case for. Unc didn't get to the second round because they had they got the second round by the bears didn't make the rams finished their tournament because it was the week before they finish the mountain. West Conference Tournament. But see you go ahead and end it so they did play one game and I bet you they wished Things have been called off like you know twenty four hours earlier. I have intersex line. Three one nine nine six before break. Let me tell you another sponsor this program. Mosier funeral cremation service. It's not an easy topic. It's not an easy thing to talk about. But let's face it. We all have to talk about it. Give Scott Robin or a member of their great staff a call today. Talk to them about pre-planning it's truly an awesome gift. It's it's something that sounds like a tough conversation to have. But you know I've been we've been through that process. Most of you have been to that process. Where you're you're planning a funeral and it's so very difficult because that's the last thing you want to do is go through all that all that process so if you can take out a couple of steps so that you.

"You'll finish your work at five in the afternoon. But you don't dare leave the office until eleven it so you literally sit guys will sit and gotta do busy stuff or getting on social media here. You know playing a little game of their phone or something because if you're walking out the door ten before ten thirty at night you're frowned upon some sort of a slacker. All right and Nfl coaches at first and foremost. I thought the greatest abusers of this were they they over present. How much preparation have to do? Okay and so. Maybe there will be some learning at the back end. That college coaches are nearly as guilty about the NFL far worse. 'cause it's all encompassing but those athletes do now so he's GonNa athletes but I think that there might be in evolution. It takes place in the back end of this. Maybe going. You know. Maybe we don't have to do all of that. We still have to work hard. Obviously but maybe we can be more efficient. We're talking about the NFL draft. And I know there are some. There are some coaches as saying. That's not going to be enough time for us to evaluate and it's like well you have all the film. You have everything if we do you know. We weren't preparing for that so now we're going to have to really put it in overdrive. I've said for years I don't I understand. You want to get a little face to face with somebody. If I'm looking at draft thirty hall I like to sit down with the conversation and do a little. You know one on one. I understand that but in regards to what kind of player Brady all this. I've got three or four years of gain tape to watch over and over and over and over and over again okay. So I've always wondered about what exactly kind of prep are you doing? An evaluation at this point in time. You've already had the combine. So you saw all the top guys combine. You Got Game. Films their entire careers to see from freshman to senior year at a junior year for guys lever like how you know how they developed over the course of time you can still make phone calls and talk to head coaches at assistant coaches at high school and family members to get you know the background and that kind of thing and what kind of person you're dealing with so that's another one of those overkill things always that what what exactly you're evaluating this point. We've seen this guy play football for four years. He was an all American. He did this he did that here. The strength and the weakness. And you've got a chance to put the tape measure on him and four other at the combine. So yeah. I've always wondered exactly what they would. What kind of evaluation needs to be on that? I'm with you. I've thought it for years and I think now we can finally talk about it. We're saying hey they're going to be able to draft a player without four million hours of footage. Oh my goodness what's going to happen. Mark appreciate you as always. My friend always look forward to these conversations and we'll catch up with you next Wednesday Arman. That's Mark Johnson. The Voice of the colored Buffalo's. It's a great point. You know you hear about Bill Belichick. And all these coaches I mean. They just costly footage forty four days. We need combines all we gotta watch how he runs watch how he does that. How does he answer that question? When at the end of the day you've already seen how they can do on a game you could see that's your main. That should be your main focus like eighty five percent of it. The rest are they do they. Are they decent person? Are they doing silly stuff? That's going to probably get in trouble down the road. That's the other side but no we need to see how you bench press when you're in your tighty whiteys. We need to see around forty when you're not in your pads it doesn't make any sense to me and it hasn't forever but now we can talk about and feel okay about twelve forty nine time. We'll take a quick break here and wrap up our number one is Derek Wolfe. A ringer ring of Famer is the ring of fame for the broncos. Water down the hall of fame watered down. We'll talk more nuggets coming up also. Unc basketball. I didn't get a chance to hit that yesterday. Steve Smiley new head coach. Can't just be a raptors Carlos Arroyo jersey overtop a forty dollar white linen short sleeve. Ak thread shirt, you white your outfit to get people talking. For example. I'm thinking Westbrook would arrive wearing a suit made out of various basketball nets. And maybe it's sort of like see-through and stuff like that. One question timely question from Graham Baker excuse me. Graeme Barker in Toronto, Ontario. What do you guys wear into the gallon theme is basket was the thing? Lady Gaga turned up to that time. And she was like in luck in Hake. I don't know for sure that may have been just an award show. Everything's the met gala what she did this one. Yeah. Like four outfit changes on the red carpet. Mark johnson. Six man. That was more keystones. Arriving like, hey. It was hatchet. That's timely born from happy doesn't it? Yes. Spinoff crazy saying so loud, isn't that? How he sort of showed up an alien. Aged backwards to had a baby on the show, and it was an old, man. Played by Jonathan. Wow. I didn't hear that. He was later in Jack a movie about a boy aging rapidly rapidly. But looking like a boy was that a man sure he was Robin Williams. He was like playing. Yeah. I like eighty. Right. Okay.
