"Didn't even realize I had in the moment I was just like loving and having so much fun and I was like I want to do more I to more I want to keep going in other than the Victoria's secret show. What was the moment for you or you're like I can't believe I'm. Doing this. So with the Victoria secret show being said coming into it, that's what I. Thought, that I wanted and I didn't I I didn't do a lot of my research I knew what models that I loved and I knew a bit about fashion but I wasn't like super into it like that because I was kinda focused on my horses. So once I got into it and I was like you know what? I want to do this for real and to do this big I went to my agency I got signed and. They basically were like you're not going to do the Victoria's secret fashion show right now like we're going to show you this whole other world of like high fashion and just this these these amazing shows and my first season I walked Chanel. So I mean I did a bunch of other shows but that was like really big for me. I never even imagined that was where I would be I literally was like. I don't care like I wanNA. Do Whatever's cool like just send me send me wherever I gotta go like I'll go do it and I'll put my hard work and do it so getting Chanel I was like what the Hell I was like holy moly like this is really happening. So I walk Mark Jacobs, my first season and those moments were like really cool for me I don't think people really want. Now they do because they can seem more of the energy that's happening in the shows and. When. You're backstage and it's just like constantly moving in girls are constantly going in the travel is insane. I remember being about nineteen years old and I had flown all I was flying from Ireland London to New York to La and back and forth, and I had to audition for almost famous. It was like one of those moments in my life for. Stop and I, remember being on a plane. And I was taxing and I just like Burson here's because I didn't know my head from need at this point I now can look back and go oh, my God i. just finished High School I mean. That's a L- A lot when you're that young and you're kind of you think you're ready for it but then you're living out of a suitcase and I remember calling my mom. was like mom. I don't I'm like losing my mind I. Don't I don't know where I am anymore and she talked me Kinda down and made me realize that that's not that's not that normal for a nineteen year old girl to be traveling like that like right out of the House and. Anyway just wondering if you ever had moments like that were usable I had a lot of. Crazy I've always had like. Some anxiety and I didn't even really know what it was when I was really young but I, think all of this kind of really ignited in me. So I really had. Okay. So that's sorry interrupt but I I was GonNa WanNa touch on that because I was reading about debilitating anxiety. Yeah. because. I think it's important especially for a lot of people you know you have however hundreds of millions of people who have. These are the things that can really you know touch people and people can relate to I, went through it in my twenties and I just wanted to sort of ask about that and what that was for you and how it manifested. Yeah. I think like I said I've always had it and didn't know what it was. 'cause no one really talked about it when I was really young and I remember going to my mom when I was super little and be like mom I, can't breathe like I'm really short of breath I feel like I can't get a deep breath and she was like I don't know. So I went to a doctor my lungs check melons are fine whatever. One ever told me what it was neat. Not even my mom really knew what was going on she couldn't be like, okay. You're having a panic attack or you're having anxiety or whatever. So it was slight growing up and then like I said going into my job and just traveling nonstop I, mean I would be on. Eight to eleven to twelve hour flights almost every single day for seven years like I was not there was no stopping I was losing my mind even like missing the smallest holiday like fourth of July I would like lose my mind I'd be hysterical in my bedroom like but I felt I almost felt like I was like. I knew I wanted to be there because I, knew that the outcome is what I wanted. I wanted to do that job and I want. But in reality I was like, what am I doing this for I'm nineteen years old in eighteen years old I should be having fun with my friends like, why am I? What am I doing I'm whatever so I would just have these breakdowns in Miami. Really really bad and I think that everyone uses the the wordings -iety really lightly these days because it is a real thing and I would get I would go into the deepest panic attacks where I would I'd have people break rush me to the hospital. I'd be like I'm GonNa die like things are not going right I got my heart checked I got my brain chip they got my lungs. Checked to make sure that I was okay I would. Had these really bad. Attacks where I would. Someone might Chinese Medicine Doctor Guy told me that they of call it cavewoman syndrome basically where. You go to bed and you think every you feel fine. You're like I'm going to bet I'm good whatever I don't feel anxious and you basically wake up in the middle of the night with like complete like just anxiety in the middle of your sleep.

"I was horrified by what I was seeing as people's sort of lack of learning collectively. To what just happened were is happening. It's still happening is hasn't changed yet. Isn't that interesting that we could be the people that scandalise idea of being forced to create something and tell a story constantly what it has no meaning it has no soul it has no authenticity or credibility. Just seem so vacant. I have a choice every morning. I can take care of myself and be of use or I can lie in bed and contribute to the garbage. "Mental Health Awareness Week and last week on Bureau F. Live our editor at large Tim. Blanks spoke to the celebrated American designer. Marc Jacobs who touched on a variety of topics from working through the krona virus crisis and maintaining his creativity but also on how the crisis is impacting his own mental health at this time of anxiety and stress for people around the world. Here's Mark Jacobs inside fashion. Hi Tam I'm such a pleasure to see it today. It's always a pleasure to see you. Tim and this will be out conversation for the next few seasons. I guess because we want you seeing each other in well who knows who knows where I am. I am in New York City in my hotel room in Soho Talking to you you've seen in a hotel rooms for the whole luck. Yes yes yes has that been. It's been let's let's put it this way. I'm grateful to be in a place where I'm comfortable. I'm going to start under the start on the. I'm going to start this chat on a positive note. So what have to keep going back to my mind is that I am grateful. I have my two dogs with me. I have clean made bed that I made this morning. I have what I need. I've got a closet full of clothes that I can play with. Have got a couple of makeup bags that I can play with. I have my iphone and my ipad which connect to other people with and I have the where I can sit outside and get some air so I am very grateful that I'm comfortable today and I feel like I'm taking care of and obviously you confidently connect with people. I'm finding. I'm actually connecting with people more than I usually do because quoting about connecting with now. But I have well. It's a strange thing. Isn't it connection? Because I never really I think of this as a type of connection and I we can use these devices of hours to connect with people in some superficial way or in some way that's different but I'm a luddite and I believe in live contact. I believe in note writing letter writing. I believe in seeing people across the dinner table or having a coffee with them I see. I don't see I didn't grow up with life on the screen and I didn't grow up with cell phone in my hand at or or night at or nih-funded whatever and I like live performance in live theater and I liked. I like going into shops. I like seeing people on streets so while this is some form of connection. It certainly. I don't have any kind of real connection to this form of connection. So but how how? How does this thing for you then? Well it's a kind of a kind of goes in waves and spurts. I mean they're I'm very sort of manic depressive. In a way I mean I am you know. My mental health goes from mania to depression. So there are days where I just feel extremely depressed and feel like it's the end of the world. And then your days were mannequin. I just think what a great opportunity for us all to learn collectively from this and move forward and then there's all the grays in between but I mean I tend to go from the basement to attic in five seconds. You know like In terms of emotions and so it's been very hard because I also not really in control of how you feel. You know the ceilings common. It's just a question of how I kind of accept them and and sort of you know honor them etc. So so I've had moments of feeling very productive and creative and moments feeling just like what's it all sore or is that all there is as I keep saying the south. You Camilla Louder. You have exactly. Isn't it funny? How life comes along to trip up those kind of those little notions and give them a sort of real time white. Will you see it's this? It's this computer right here. That fascinates me the most. And that's what I think is always this kind of amazing thing. I have this kind of faulty computer. Which is my brain and it's not faulty in the sense that it doesn't work but it just kind of works as it does right and so. I mean for absolutely no apparent reason. I could do everything I did yesterday. And Go to sleep on time and wake up on time and have my vitamins draped might juices for some reason the Sun could be shining and I can have the most miserable attitude about life and see things through the darkest leads and then I could stay up all night and and and not drink juices not my vitamins and like the sun isn't shining and I'm just like full of hope and you know like so who knows and then yes they're like these songs that comes my head in these things. I've seen in these performances. I know I don't know like books I've read and you know I don't. I'm not in charge of where the where where my brain sort of fires on a particular day but like it just doesn't it and it's like kind of fascinating as kind of goes through all of its little find sub dreaming a lot more. I have some very weird dreams but I've always had weird dreams that I've always been a bit of an insomniac because apparently that's a that's a huge side effect of this pandemic. Is People a happen. Incredible Dreaming Nkala at a lot about real people like either family members will celebrities or whatever but that they remember the dreams full of almost movie. And that's by to pick this. That people can depend up in the daytime and then the minds slowed us. I don't think that I'm dreaming more than I was before. And I think my dreams are kind of still of the crazy surreal content that they always work which combines a little bit of like the tape recorder you know things I've just recently heard but then then concocted into something that might have some other greater meaning but No I find my dreaming kind of the same. I guess you're making a movie while you yeah so via via recommended. I mean she. She had this idea. Unfortunately it was like four weeks in she was like. Oh you should have taped yourself every day. Like just videotaped yourself every day like you had this like you know daily journal like on tape like everything you did just like this endless documentary journal and I was like well if I had started it for weeks ago. It would have been great because we're already for weeks in if feels that will have to do something else. So so nick My friend my best friend and and someone I work with very closely you know at. Marc Jacobs He he and I came up. And we decided we'd do more of a fairy tale like this this kind of life in quarantine more of an louise or a you know like or a home alone or something like that right played all the characters who would normally be here at the hotel but or not like what kind of well everything from the porter to the manager to the chef in the restaurant to the housekeeping to the engineer to the different people who are residing in the hotel to the different things. I do in my room on different occasion to me documenting my set like just just just like I never any element of the other look creeping in. No just just just anything. I can do within the confines of this hotel. Your instagram is being incredibly vivid. The whole time that you've seen in Lucca. It seals almost like you are testing out characters in well. I'm not really I'm I'm kind of just you know I've always been this way. This is like this is nine year old mark who you always was in his bedroom. Escaping chaos of what life looked like you know like a very disturbed and dysfunctional childhood. And I went to my room and I sat with my clothes and I painted my jeans or embroidered. Jean Jacket and I put on my outfits. I comb my hair one way or the other and you know maybe I found a curler for my mother curled by whatever it was but that nine year old kid that me was like a in his own world in his bedroom and had to use his imagination to create a world. That was a happier place. And that's kind of what I'm doing I mean. I have two months worth of clothes that I packed to move in here. I'm I have a couple of bags of of makeup. That randomly for some reason felt were important to take with me and And then you know just and the dogs and Some hairclips jewelry and I'm just playing around and and keeping myself entertained and and doing what I do which I think is taking care of my mental health. I mean I have to get up everyday and shower and I have to Rome and I have to get dressed and I I just feel like not only do I have to do it for my sanity but like I enjoy doing it. So it gives me pleasure and it allows me to kind of be of service in some way. Because if I'm not well. In taking care of myself creatively and in every other way then. I'm of no use to anybody else. I mean I just can't lie an unmade bed all day long. It's the most pressing thing I've I mean. I used to see my mother who suffered from manic depression. She wouldn't get out of her bed sometimes for weeks and her bed was never made and the site of an unmade bed to be as just about the most horrifying thing. I can remember.

"Using less water chemicals and energy and the final wash will use laser technology. So lots of people are going out this problem from different directions. I'm glad that Tommy hilfiger is part of this initiative that people are like denim. Let's do something different with it. Or let's figure out a way to recycle within this part of the industry spent tastic, I love it. We're going to do one last letter and this one. Is from candidate. Who says I love that candidate calls herself that now I know it's her name come on. She has to she used to just be and now she's candidate. That just made me giggle. Okay. She says just listen to the episode talking about Mark Jacobs getting sued by nirvana for the use of the Connex smiley face created by Kurt cobaine. They are just so many levels of irony. Here it blows my gen-x our brain. It's ironic that that's Miley face even became a logo. It started a sort of an anti logo. Nirvana was an anti-capitalist almost Neil counterculture band and Kurt Cobain, even in the later years when his ban was was a success kept doing shows he and the band weren't up for and were pressured to do so out of fear. They would run out of money. This is a common tactic used to explain musicians that Kurt Cobain nirvana left behind a body of work that grew to a four hundred fifty million dollar empire is ironic all on its own that his doodle from his notebooks used in the bans merchandise, morphed into an image that was stolen by fashion label, and there's a lawsuit over it. Now is crushingly ironic that the brand who stole it is Marc Jacobs, a brand modeled by Kurt Cobain's own daughter Francis bean Cobain in twenty seventeen forgot about that is just painfully hardly full circle ironic. Adjacent ironic is the point that grunge was popularized in part by nirvana and was the antifascist movement sending kids to thrift stores army surplus instead of into malls. That smiley face was a part of the anti-capitalist antifascist movement. And now, it's the center of capitalist fashion. Just twenty years later. Thanks for keeping up with the podcast. You've always been one of my favorites. And I will stop what I'm doing and listen immediately. Whenever I see a new episode has dropped lots of of you Kate. We love you candidate candidate also drop some knowledge bombs about capitalism and the nineties this was such a fun note..

"Has accused Marceca of copyright infringement for using Nevada trademarks in the collection filed in California federal court last week, the lawsuit states that nirvana smiley face logo was created by the band's original frontman and founder Kurt Cobain in nineteen Ninety-one. And that quote, nirvana has used that copyright protected design and logo continuously sense to identify its music, unquote, never mind, the fact that you know, the band has not exactly produced music in a recent period of time, but this particular design of smiley face, it has this instant recognisability of oh that went with that. From that time apparel, featuring the nervous Miley face logo has been sold through retailers like target and urban outfitters. However, Marc Jacobs did not pay a license feature in our Rana to use its intellectual property big mistake. So the fact that the nirvana corporation licenses out that logo for small that's something. I learned today. Second of all I don't know why I was surprised that nirvana still has like a business because there are several living members of the band, and their oil teas and all sorts of stuff. It was like I didn't even consider this that it could be an issue with this collection. But surprised demons Domeisen Kirk obain, just don't get your business. Right. Don't massacre cobaine all there is to it. I side with nirvana on this one. I do a thousand percent. I I feel like. This is kind of an open and shut case. I have not heard a comment from the Mark Jacobs company. But I mean, I mean, it's kind of obvious you guys. Yeah. When I saw the shirt, I assumed they were cool at the band, Bhagat a mind your Ps and qs come on. Right. You gotta say, thank you. Thank you. Do it's their logo. It just is. So to all of you aspiring designers out there. This is just a little warning that like when you take inspiration from pop culture, and then you re release your line twenty some odd years later, just make sure you have the copyright stuff figured out. And you'll be fine. You'll be fine. Everything's fine to say, thanks. Let's talk about more lawsuits. Because apparently that's what we're doing today. Look we are starting twenty nineteen with rage and revenge and what says raging eventually lawsuits like money Honey vans filed a lawsuit against target for copyright and free. Moment. So they are suing target for trademark infringement and unfair competition. Target is selling the Camilla lays up sneaker for fifteen dollars fans old school sneaker is price at sixty dollars. That's Nico was originally launched in nineteen seventy seven and currently accounts for twenty five percent of vans. Business the shoes. Look, a lot alike, both are black and white side stripes, the company states that the side stripe is instantly recognizable, and it's a design element that is necessary in order to be eligible for trademark protection. So the sang like this is part of what's protected within our brand what I thought about was Lou batons and the red souls. That's how they've gotten its core a lot where people have like L. Let's put red paint on the bottom of our shoes. No, no. You can't because it's instantly recognizable as baton brand fans are saying something very similar like this is a very recognizable. Mark for our company. With footwear. If I if I'm remembering correctly, a lot of the court stuff comes down to function or fashion. Yes. If the part, they're arguing about is a functioning part of the shoe like necessary, like a soul or a lace, your you have less of a chance in court of winning than if you say that the thing that ran has copied as purely fashionable. Yeah. Van say that that products are confusing to customers because they look so much alike and some shoppers or even referring to the target version as fake vans vans as a brand doing really well right now they are on track to do five billion in revenue by twenty twenty three..

"You'd think someone that wanna come in help you to get that money out of your wallet. And recommend the concealed. What else you got to go right to doing it? Right. Yeah. Right. The powder and then in in the end, the right brush and the whole situation. The natural versus aesthetics and finish that you want. Anyway. So it's like you burn islander. Apparently, I was looking for gold eyeliner, but I wanted to gold liquid. A pen island afraid of guy liner. No, any maybe I look online stickers. We're talking before we started recording these I'm watching Pat McGrath miss might be obsession for another time. And she just see best makeup videos on her Instagram. It's the best and it's the coolest shit, and it looks amazing. I found Mark Jacobs one and it'll do for now, but it's a pencil and I wanted like a pin like a marker. I can't do I wanted to clean the very high shimmer, but Mike the McDougals pretty good this cold on. I can only do I can only do like the pencil like the coal. Yeah. Pencil eyeliner because it just irritates my eyes. Sure. Yeah. Right. Time for like years ago, I discovered this. And I was like, oh, this is another reason. I don't care for me. This is another point against you. I never got a chance to learn how to do it properly because my eyes are just like find a brand that doesn't happen. But you probably have to try six seven different ones. All twelve to thirty dollars e some like, yeah. Go would probably be good brand for you. I have a good pencil that I that is the go-to. Yeah. "Together. Maybe before the season starts before show season starts and just had a quick little guys. Here's the base. Doctor does like to what I try to do. My teams is basically talked to people about like how to do certain things in depending on how much time we have. I liked the teach them. We don't have much time. I just do it myself because I'm really fast with so it's like noticed that a deficiency. Both in US and Europe with just people being really verse with all different types of hair. And it's it's a bit alarming to models have been over for years. Nobody's been talking about it. I've been on shows as an assistant where I have a line of girls waiting for me. And they won't want anyone because they just tired of getting the burn or fucked or. Sorry. I'm cursing, literally like the girls would be like, you know, getting taken off of shows because people don't know how to handle it counted because they have talent. And they don't have the people to happen before. I had I've had I wasn't the Boston charge. But I've been on a set where they sent the model home not because she wasn't gorgeous. And brought in her game because the hairstyles. Couldn't do it is. So so bad that is so sad. But at least there's there's been some movement that like the women cast in fashion shoes are starting to be more. And you had noticed Jesse said to me like it used to be like, okay? Here's the look like say, it's Michael Kors and every girl has straightened hair with like each way. Okay. Yeah. But lately, we've been seeing a lot of designers, especially the younger ones are like. Oh, no. That makeup can all be sort of like, a look, but hey, be different. I love. That too. I've noticed it. And I'm noticed a lot of corn rose this on the runways season. Gives them all racist. No. Yeah. 'cause member that marks teacups. You Yeah. just I just said. think. Yeah. Long notice. I was talking to a friend of mine a thousand won't mention name. Did you see? On all the runways like the answer to like black hair was corn rows like it wasn't. It wasn't. It'll make. However, I think it's I think it's a beautiful thing. And I think it's amazing. You saying what I hear you saying is will they wanted to tame the texture and that was the way to do it. I think that no it's looked at as Sheikh way of say back. Oh, a sneaky sneaky sneaky. If you need some of this show that I've done I've done corn rows and stuff like that. And I think always look beautiful by realized that now it's becoming the trend for is it the new tweet only black here. I did see a lot of did see a lot of different ethnic multiple different models with different ethnicities with corn rose as well. Not a white gall. Did you go with what does I dare to stick there? Yeah. I would be terrified designer. If I were white designer, I'm not I'm not saying how I feel about or anything go there. But if I were a white designer in today's climate seeing what Mark Jacobs with Marc Jacobs. I wouldn't dare I wouldn't dare. Yeah. I would be too afraid. I gotta look at what show. This was. "If you've been there, please tell me what cheap food items, I can get near the cash registers in general or an India. No, India, I don't I think best price modern wholesale is only India, I'll just the name of the company best price. Modern wholesale is the name of the store that is a subsidiary of WalMart operating in India. They may have just while called it big ass door with big ass products. I thinking about this do they just refer to it as best price. Because that wouldn't we have best buy like that wouldn't seem strange to me. But like Deary, I'm going to best price mutter wholesale. Like sounds like a mouthful let short in that BPM w India listeners. I know you're out there. Please write in and tell us about your experiences with just about anything, actually. Okay. Next story. Let's talk about some more fashion musical chairs. John target left. Marc Jacobs after get this two months. Two months of working at the company. Target is a designer and the co founder of the label Baja east he joined Marc Jacobs to run the company's lower priced offerings. So Marc Jacobs used to have Marc by Marc Jacobs. And that was their lower priced designer goods. It did really. Well, so well. That it was bringing in about eighty percent of the company's revenue, but Marc Jacobs decided to get rid of that line and said they were going to consolidate some things come out with new product and target was going to be the head of that LVMH which owns Marc Jacobs said in a statement, quote, John Tarr, gone is a talented designer, and we appreciate the work. He has done here. Ultimately, working together did not make sense for the brand. And we wish him the best Rocard who good Basser, wait. So what was he doing prior to this role for two months? So he's the co founder of Baja east which is its own brand. And so he's going to go back to work on that company was a designer us working for that. Marc Jacobs has been through a lot the past couple months as Lisa reported a couple of weeks ago, he got engaged at japodlay. But the company as a whole has been going through some changes, many of the original designers were fired. Before target arrived. So he could bring in his own people. But now that he's gone they're gone to which means Marc Jacobs and his chief executive officer are starting from scratch. So what does it mean for the company? I think it remains to be seen. I'm a little confused by this news because I understand that he worked there for about two months and his purpose was to work on the lower the lower end of the price spectrum for Marc Jacobs. But they decided to consolidate those lines at least a year ago. So he was working on the next iteration of whatever that was it wasn't going to be marked by Marc Jacobs. They may have had some plant that they haven't announced to the public that we were unaware of conspiracy theory. Do you think he was brought in for the sole purpose of helping plan the flash mob at chapel lay? So Mark Jacobs could propose. I think he's too talented of designer just to do that. Although it is a curious theory that I would like to propose as well. I'm just about having theories that I can't back up. We'll consult the ouija board on that one. The man didn't even figure out how to use a coffee machine. What can you do it two months? Wait, do you know that for sure or no, I'm taking a guess about the first two months you have at a job anywhere. What are you learning? You're learning the person's name across from you. Her name is Brenda probably that coffee pot comment reminded me of an old school Gawker blind item where it would be like this liberty with a reputation of liking younger women was seen at the such and such. But it also seems very realistically. A new designer at very reliable fashion house can't figure out how to use the coffeemaker. No that I totally made up. Let's not start any rumors. I'm just guessing about what you can learn two months about your office. You're still get your see licks like you just figured out how your health insurance works. If that if you got it immediately, sometimes I'll wait ninety days..
