You're going to do the same thing. Or try. Try really hard. And some of those guys quite frankly are just at a different level. Oh yeah. And you don't realize that until you try it. I mean, I look at you guys like Danny was as a fisherman, Mark hill. There's a number of guys that you go with them and you're just like, wow. It's impressive what they can do. And there's some guys like that for PK, like Tim Jenny, he's their pro up in Saskatchewan. That guy catches he had the catch and release world record walleye. You know, the guy is incredible. And he caught it on a PK spoon. So then, of course, that was the big break for PK was that moment, right? That's what really just kind of blew things up for them. But man, you go fishing with that guy. He's just so good. And he's got the feel. He knows what he's doing. He's got the cadence. He just knows how to trigger those fish. So it is hard because there are lots of great learners out there. There's lots of great bow packing systems. When he was in his early twenties, probably like actually 20 years old living in Harlem at that's one of the coolest things of all time. Get your Willy Mays just, you know, bones out of his house, and you know he's playing stickball with you in the street. It's It's like I know the kids, ice cream and everything. Yeah, that Zach a Children's book that's like a fairy tale. Like what actually happened. How cool is that? That's awesome. You're the kids. I mean, talk about that story. Growing up and having that story I was one of those kids have played stickball is Willie Had be incredible and they would bounce it. And then it's and looking at really some of the footage I saw. Locked and loaded and his foot's down or it's about to be down and he's a just about the fires hips out, But he's got that He's got his hands back, and he's got that. Stick, literal broomstick. It looks like he's got it up. And I'm like, Oh, yeah, he lost that ball, which is why he took him out to go get ice cream because there's no way he didn't just launch one. You know, T o to the corner, and it probably ended up in some New York sewer. So you had to buy my scream. He lost the ball. I mean, said, Come get some of this kid. I ain't taking it easy on you expose his father. His father was the one who got him into playing the game and his father made a master every position. First base. Then you go to second base. He got a short stop. And he if you look at all that those old footage of me now you look down. You got everybody's got a three by five card. He literally You can see there's lots of footage of him pointing to the different outfielders positioning the fielders. I mean, he had all that in his head. It's just just amazing player really. He played so hard that he would collapse. You know, a couple times throughout his career that literally had to be hospitalized the middle of the year because from heat exhaustion, probably from playing so hard and those heavy wool uniforms they used to wear. It's been a continuation of things that we my off and others like me have always known to be under the covers that were just not amplified right so even if we think about george floyd as an example clearly unfortunately unacceptable but. I think what's intriguing is that it's kind of like i was talking. About digital amplifying use cases this was amplified. You know for the world to see the past. These things were not amplified. They were things that were happening to people who look like me family members. You know that looked like me. And they were not amplified. It was oh okay. Wow and now we've been able to amplify these things using enabling technologies by the way. I e an iphone the home. It's a great great great great great device in its allows you to amplify you've been having in the background that we're not amplified that being said one of the things that i have been absolutely focused on a pass. Thirty years is to make sure that the way show up in the way i do. My best work is important. Because i really want if folks the me doing excellent job the next person that comes along that looks like me and the beauty of the person reminds them of may while that individual has a chance to be even better than me and to even exceed you know what even my expectations were for me so for me. It's not a facade will coming in. It's who i am. But the beauty of it people get to see you know who i am. And hopefully they're looking beyond me being a personal color but a person can maximum value. You know to the franchise in that neck scott to a personal color. That once again looks like me. I just heard a us a tailgate. One of my office told me that they have access databases to be on. I didn't even know microsoft's access. Because i had not heard that term here for a long time. So how do i say. Wow tell me more please and also i think maybe being able to do this job. Wale in across the company as i'm talking to people i'm more listening than talking here in this word that i use this phrase tale me more please Matt way to keep the business talking to me so that i understand where the rich opportunities are to do real digital delivery and also where the focus mine data priorities because the more i can keep talking the more learn about the opportunities of where there are opportunities across the company for lead to to help. If that makes that makes a lotta sense. It really underscores the need for a great leader to be a good listener And that isn't always necessarily the case so kudos to you for for Driving that inside home thank you. It's it's a journey. Many people aspire to walk in your footsteps ward of technology leaders becoming bore board members and thankfully there there are a growing fraternity or sorority That that that has done so to hear a little bit about your journey. How did you begin to contemplate that the extent to which it was something that you actively pursued especially if you have any advice for others who might walk in your footsteps mark would love to get that. I think about the network of relationships prison. This is a new relationship for me with you. Peter and it just started but what you will find is that i will pay you from time to time checking. How're you doing. I i think about the network effect the same way i think about how i this my money. It's really something that i really must pay attention to be mindful of that. It requires not one hundred percent of my time and attention. The time of the tension and the i learned from stephen covey you many years ago. There's this concept called the circle of influence in your bubbles. You know can shrink. Expand will grow depending on your actions and so for me a years ago. I said it would be awesome to have the privilege to be on a corporate board. And i've done advisory but what's As i understood it is one of the the has privilege. You can have competent to actually be there to a corporation with their strategy. And so i started making sure that i kept my network activated in made it known the others not in an arrogant way. That wow board members pay. What does it mean to be on the board. People are telling me that your job is not the tail kiko. So just doing learning's going to brief here. You know let it be known not in a pushy wave while af there something comes up. We're mosquitoes are match. But you manage that network you you you you help you let others know that. Hey if they can assist you in anyway but you keep that network you you manage it like a pot of gold and you just keep you know once again as i said before i may. I may be on a train to make pop in my head. I may send you a link. Gayness eight just wanted to check in how are you keeping that network fluid An but also doing everything in your power to understand what it means you know. Let that be on a award but how you show up as a leader everyday you'll find that word of mouth. You doing the things that you're supposed to do as well we'll began to permeate you know the this ecosystem bet we that we function on not to just be out there. You know getting your name out but getting it out there in a way to what people know why. You are interested so thinking about puppet. It's an area that i have paxton in. It's it's it's the automation you know within a function that i started and i think that there was a connection. He will you gong these interviews and you talk to people. Hopefully lacey that passion. You have their space as well as his industry on. So it's once again. It's not just working network. Because that's not what i'm saying but it's it's really making these connections you look people with a servant mentality. You know that you are willing to help right that you want to be served but that you are willing to serve and that's really what it's about how to you know serve these outfits that are really doing good and they need different perspectives and different points of edens and it translates also in the business that rian but also for me though i think reporting to the ceo as the cbi auto being on board working with the ceo. Believe it or not it actually helps me to both jobs even better than i would have without these two. You leak connections It does yeah. Well thank you. "I'm gonna have a head of digital an it Digital strategy and innovation right because we need to have this external view what we create these innovation hubs internally and then i'm gonna put a transformation office at the top so that we can do all of these things and then there will be a head of. I'm not calling data insights. I'm calling colon information insights analysis because we are a data rich company number one. But i believe that we now need to take the data and extract information and get insects from the information. You often hear data driven insights. And i get that. I'm not trying to be new age. But i think what we want. Our company's information insects and so once again so we will have a clearly line of demarcation around that data piece around the digital piece in than running the traditional information technology piece. At of course they all come together you know under me and then s to be the partnering components of what we do as well but i think in order to make all of these things work together when i went with the business goes back to this notion that around coordination and not controlling. Because i don't wanna be the control as data but i would like to educate vocal opponents of governance own stewart super beta on the right meaning data at cetera. And i don't really care whether data comes from. But i can aggregate up at the network level in allow. The company has taken advantage of that data the digital piece. What you will not give me. A lot is is digital transformation. Because i believe that. That's important. But i think digital delivery as more quarter and i think if i didn't digital delivery right at the end of the year we can step back and say wow with these ten things that we did for the company were they transformation versus transformation as the union goyim point and we focus on that. Instead of delivery i think digital delivery has to be the name of the game for us very interesting mark mentioned earlier that you are in the grand scheme of things still relatively new very seasoned. It executive in the industry at places like Places like merck gilead sciences prior to your your current post But you've had a most unusual experience of on boarding almost entirely. Virtually and one of the things i've i've had a cement conversations advising some technology executives who are long In their roles who had years prior to the quarantine and at cautioning them that you know you need to recognize. You're going into quarantine with people who are already immersed in the culture who understand the mores of the organization and therefore you're gaining some advantage during these unusual times because of that shared nomenclature and culture. That was already there You need to recognize that if you're in the blessed position of adding staff those people don't have that and so you need to really sort of factor the way in which you think about things. It strikes me mark. You understand that Better than anyone because you're the leader. Who is in fact on board during these most unusual times and had to find ways proxies who immerse yourself in the culture. Get to know the team that you're responsible for your peers at cetera. Talk a bit about The methods that you have used to try at least to make up for The ability to have had in person meetings but even as importantly the meeting before or after the meeting the impromptu coffee the dinner etc What what methods of us please. So i will i tell you. I'll tell you what i miss. I miss the impromptu meetings at the coffee shop where you walk downstairs. And you grab a cup of coffee and you say hey people need to follow you around this thing. I haven't figured out a way to reimagine the drive-by Drop ahead in the zone. Where teams you know that being said my on boarding with my business has been very very seamless in that are things that they need from me their knowledge that need them. So we've been able to make this e media connection. I'm the new guy a new head of digital. They wanna know what i'm thinking so we can have these meetings. They're just rich and we just run out of time. Virtually because it's a meet and greet you know it's do. We know some of the same people but also hey mark. Here's what we need you at the company and once again i'm being new that means everybody's is transparent around the good the bad and the ugly so that is really really good as released to the business to partnering now as we shift to the staff. eat my organization e the technology organization for the company. This has been an interesting. Let's just call it a really good challenge in that. I'm learning everyone. Virtually yet in the past. I would have flown to germany and really had dinner after the meeting Being able to walk the halls and meet some of the people that may have been shot. Nb all hands and the company just sit as a. Hey how are you mark you doing. How's your family etcetera in that piece of missed and so i've got i'm still working through. How do i create that connected. You've been there for less than a quarter now But maybe you can take a quick moment for those who are listening to this. Who may be less familiar with the company and give us a brief overview of csl. Behring's business would you do that. Please oh yes see. You're marrying the enterprise. We are a company that will hundred and five years old on based in australia with a laser focus on life sustaining treatments for many elements in the foundation of what we was plasma notice. I'll use digital delivery and there's a data component to that i believe that digital delivery in the n. enables digital transformation and so for me would see us l. bearing. I'm looking at the end to end value chain whether it's the army side weather's the commercial side whether it's even within information technology to do intelligent automation but also we have a network that we hold manufacturing and we have lots of sites around the world and so one of the rose i play is how do we enable digital transformation even on the shop floor a good example with big cannot ensure that we can proactively help the shop floor to understand when a component is going to fail. It could be a component. That's critical for plasma fractionation or for including the vaccine in bio that will be shipped around the world and so it's such a unique role abeille Of course i know how to be a cio. And i'm learning how to be a cio. Clearly i can say that. The expectations are higher In one of the one of the things would run right now is understanding when we say digital digital transformation. What does it mean. and what i've learned. So far is that there were so many definitions and so i decided that we're i want to start is with the digital literacy campaign. And what do i do that. I'm going to do that so that i can insure that out of the gate. We all on the page with a common vocabulary nomenclature so when we say digital digital transformation digital to liberate. We're all speaking the same language so that i'm not talking over someone or at someone in the same thing with me. And so. I have this role peter of really sitting down and putting in place a strategy that will enable the other strategies that have already been the villa as it relates to the digital components of those strategies. And so i'm so excited about that particular piece in the same town. I've got to deliver the information. Technology strategy for the traditional component of the house and the data strategy for the company as. Well so we're gonna take it data and digital in capsulated capsulated under the umbrella in begin to tell a story and to begin to light up opportunities for the company. But the other piece. I need to add around. This is that there are digital opportunities that i've found that are going on at the company but they are not being amplify at were highlighted. So good example would be on the team of the they are doing. Kpi's for yield improvement within you know plasma area and i said wow. This is actually a pretty cool. Aren't we wanted to tell you balancing. Why aren't we amplifying that up to the highest level so that we can begin to show. These quick wins in. Part of my job is not to control. But the coordinate you'd these activities that are actually in-flight in the company and begin to show these quick wins and i believe the team was really surprised. That nearly technologies saying you don't want to control you. Want to coordinate. That's been a big hit you know support with the constituents that i'm within the company very interesting and it also interesting. This consolidation of the traditional it aspects of the role the digital aspects of the role the data aspects of the role. There the. you're well aware there's some companies were those are divided among multiple executives. Frankly i often feel like When that happens you are building a recipe for Potential politics or at least stepping on each other's of so much that rhymes between the the mandates a different organizations of these kinds. Maybe it'd be interested in your in your perspective on in terms of how you think about the teams underneath each of those. Do you have many people who are hybrids across those are they. Three distinct teams marks is that setup. That's excellent question and you and i. We promptly need to do another.
