"MMA dot com slash tech meme. There was also a lot of speculation over the weekend about when the next Apple event might be the date March 8th keeps getting batted around and in his newsletter this week mark Herman discusses that, but also the idea that Apple may release an entry level MacBook Pro with an M two processor sometime this year. And it will probably come without a touch bar, pro motion or mini LED. Quoting 9 to 5 Mac. To differentiate the 2021 MacBook Pro from the M1 pro and M1 max max germin expects Apple to compromise display processor and storage. Not only that, but this Mac would also lose the touch bar, likely ending it once and for all. As gurman notes this Mac is likely to keep an LCD screen, which means no mini LED or pro motion. The rumored MacBook Air on the other hand could feature a mini LED display, but not pro motion. Last but not least, not only will the entry level MacBook Pro be updated with the M two chip, but also the 24 inch iMac in entry level Mac mini and this revamped MacBook Air slated to launch sometime this year. End quote. And quoting Mac rumors. In his power on newsletter today, Bloomberg's marker, and reiterated that Apple is planning to hold a virtual event on Tuesday March 8th to introduce new iPhone SE and iPad air models, which are both expected to feature an a 15 chip and 5G support. Germin said Apple also plans to launch at least one new Mac this spring, but it's unclear if that Mac would be introduced at Apple's event. This new Mac could be a high end Mac mini, powered by the M1 pro and M1 max chips and an Apple silicon replacement for the 27 inch iMac is not expected to launch until as late as August or September. Apple has at least four new Macs powered by M two chips in its pipeline, including refresh models of the MacBook Air, entry level 13 inch MacBook Pro, 24 inch iMac and entry level Mac mini, according to gurman. It's likely these Maxwell launch later in the year after Apple finishes releasing its final max with M1 pro and M1 max.

"So I'm sure Sam, you're following project Titan. It's constantly in the news, which is interesting. I thought I was going to go to go away apple's car project. It seems to be changing a little bit. They've assigned Kevin lynch now to run it, which is I think a sign, he's the guy who put Apple watch on the map. And he's the guy that you assigned to a new product when you're getting ready to launch it to make sure it launches with a bang. They've been hiring people right and left from all sorts of companies, including Tesla. They just lose their battery guy. But is project Titan on the high burner right now? Is that what you think? Certainly seems to be getting a little more attention again. I wrote my first article about the Apple car back in February 2015. I wrote a whole series of articles back in 2015 about this. And more or less stopped after that because it wasn't much else to say. And frankly, most of what I wrote back then, looking back over again, and I put a link in the rundown to my blog where I wrote this stuff, is still true today. I think I have a very hard time believing that Apple is going to get into the business of building and selling cars to consumers. It is and always has been a very low margin business. With a few exceptions, there are a few companies that have managed to become very to maintain very high margins in the business. Brands like Porsche. And Ferrari. But they're also relatively low volume manufacturers. Compared to a Toyota or Volkswagen. And it just doesn't seem like the kind of business that Apple would want to get into. It's just not what Tim Cook likes to pursue. If they were to do this, the latest thing that Mark Herman published, which I thought, to me seemed rather flawed in its thinking. Was that they were going to build an autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel, no pedals. And frankly, that is not while I think we will have vehicles on the road that matched that description in 2025, which is the timeline that German gave. Those vehicles are going to be very limited in the where they can operate. And the conditions that can operate in. There'll be trucks and robo taxis, delivery vehicles, and they will operate in very specific operating systems. They're like Waymo right now. You can't use it to downtown San Francisco. You can only use it in the very much simple avenues part of San Francisco. Yeah. And that makes us level four and level 5 is so hard to do that they're just not there. It is. It's extremely difficult to do. The world is a very difficult place. And for all of our flaws, as human beings, we are shockingly good at doing perception of the world around us in ways that computers simply can not handle with the with anywhere near the same degree of reliability. AI is not nearly good enough. Not nearly reliable enough to do safety critical operations like this. Yeah, it's fine for doing facial recognition or a lot of other applications that's used for. But for something where the consequences of making a mistake mean that people die, that's not good. It's not anywhere close to being ready for that. And it probably will be for a long, long time. And there's also the issue of humans who are unpredictable. And if you're a software trying to understand what's going on, it's challenging. And that actually has turned out to be one of the toughest parts of this. You can sort of break down the autonomous driving problem into four main steps, perception, making sense of the world around you, what are the things identifying all the stuff around you and where it is in physical space around you? Then prediction, predicting what all those other road users are going to do in the next three to 5 seconds. Then path planning, figuring out what is your path that you're going to take through that environment? And then control actually executing the brakes and the steering and the acceleration to make that path happen. Well, it turns out that perception is really hard, but prediction is even harder. Understanding what other road users are going to do in the next three to 5 seconds is really, really hard. And that's something that AI and software is still really struggling with. So I think if Apple were to go down this path, the way they're likely to do it is as a robo taxi model as a service model. I don't think you'll ever be or at least not for a very long time be able to go and buy an Apple car. Golly, if you look at how much money Uber is losing as a ride share, but make money at this? Well, there's an important difference here. Apple is a company that goes after premium customers. Right. So they are not going to offer the kind of cheap Uber and Lyft rides that we became used to pre-pandemic. Even now, Uber and Lyft, they have raised their prices dramatically over the last several years. We're still losing money. And they're still losing money. Apple, the Apple customers. And the thing is doing the robo taxi model. Apple can be very selective about where it operates. It doesn't have to be everywhere. It can be cleverly hills. And it's just Beverly Hills and Miami, south beach, and Manhattan. It's not a $1 billion business so I hate to say it. That's a lot of money to spend for a very, it's going to be really tough to get the kind of revenues that Apple likes from this business. Do you think Mark got it wrong? He's quoting anonymous sources. He says, even within the project Titan team, there's dispute over whether they'd be able to do.

"Jonathan Ferrell Lisa Abramovich in Tom Keane on radio on television a most interesting day Some earnings coming out as well A market lift that has a different character to it John it's a market lift ramped around fed speak Where did the equity bears go Tom four days of games into Tuesday up another half of 1% on the S&P striking distance of all time highs on the S&P 500 And the fed speed Tom front and center because we're doing this with increasing bets of rate hikes at the fed Next year Yeah it's going to be interesting to see how they do They were you for another They're going to separate taper from rates I think John I'm more focused on the rate chat than the tape Taper chats done November 3rd let's go Let's go Let's have a conversation about interest rates Fact of the matter is we're not the objective is they've not been successful tongue The objective is to separate the taper torque from rate height guidance They've not been successful because we're increasingly pricing in interest rate hikes That's what you'd think they need to push back against this week This new phrase slug flesh and Lisa to me It's about slower growth and you wonder is there a fiscal drag if Washington gets nothing done on infrastructure Nothing done on some form of social programs And frankly even if they do get something done the fact that it will be drawn out over many years we're getting the roloff of a lot of the fiscal support that we got from the pandemic when the debate around the fed though really hinges on the lack of knowns I mean how could you speak with conviction Tom about an inflationary backdrop that no one fully understands We don't know how much is being driven by supply side dynamics versus demand side to dynamics And that matters tremendously for a Federal Reserve Now John I really want to stop the show here and we're advantaged as you know by Mark gurman who's flat out the number one person in the world on Apple and all that John you know I've been talking about technology and our underestimation of it This is from the production expert this morning It's a first look at the engineering that cook and Cupertino have done Geek bench and John Poole say this new toy John which you need near the performance of the 12 core cheese grater All you gotta know in consumer speak is this thing's a beast and John we underestimate that going into 2025 Do I need the screen cleaning cloth Tom $19 Come on I sit here and I laugh Tom the problem is they'll be cutting that out in the earnings in the sky And the PowerPoint What would they call that They would call that And cleaning cloths Cleaning something Cleaning experience I'm saying that the inequalities that we're talking about every day and the market guesses we're talking about have an overlay of technology Lisa that's unmeasurable and you saw that yesterday beneath the headlines of Apple Although to John's point there is a limit to what people will pay and really it will be interesting to see whether people pay $19 for a cloth The idea here that they tried to make an Apple watch premium that was something how many thousands of dollars they had to retrench because people actually said well you know the technology is going to be obsolete The Hermes watch helped out with that Lisa one of your offspring is going to be going I need to load at MacBook M1 X or whatever You know this is like this weekend's conversation And when I say to them you better clean the screen they say okay I've got something for that And I'm gonna say yeah I've got this It comes free with my glasses John it gives you a cloth What is that about Tom It's what they might have Yeah we're gonna make some Tom Oh there it is Mark Herman thank you for your reporting on Apple John I'm reporting a data check And I guess they got to say oil's cratered Criteria 83 That's from 25 Right now Bear in mind Tom there's people listening on radio They might not get a sarcasm up 9 tenths 1% on crude Through 83 83 27 Yields in a basis point reverses some of the move in the bond market One 58 80 bit of dollar weakness out there Euro strength Euro dollar one 1655 and Tom can't get away from it Equity futures just partner get on again of 22 and a half of 1% What was the draw down 5% and now within 1% of all time highs Come up over 6% off the NASDAQ bottom as well On radio out of New York and of course Boston Washington San Francisco and all across the station and truly around the world We said good morning And on radio and TV it's about okay now what Her shooting is chief investment officer Okay now what If the Northwestern Mutual company Brett what is the mood of your institutional and retail clientele that's worried cautious or flat out scared Yeah we think there's been worries in the markets about mid may So if you think back then everything was going well in this country Everything that we had tried to do over the prior year was kind of coming to fruition So we had rising vaccination declining COVID cases And economic growth was strong And I think people sat around and wondered what could it go wrong And so you had to worry about too much I think the inflation commentary that we still have today and what would the fed do You had the two little crowd China evergreen would the economy roll over And then valuations our stocks too strong how they rallied too much And we think that's really driven trading over the past few months And we think that as you move towards the end of the year investors will refocus on economic and earnings fundamentals which will push stocks higher And I think that's what you're seeing right now Earnings are coming in strong The economy is still strong Certainly there has been a week patch because of COVID But I think that alleviates and I think you're left with an economy that's moving higher earnings that are strong and a ten year treasury still setting around one 60 Where are you going to put your money How important is that one 60 pace in all of this It's important I mean if you think right now I find the narrative kind of odd when people come on worried about inflation saying the fed's going to do nothing And then they tell you to invest in bonds To me I still think there's plenty of room in equities I think especially in the more cyclical areas which I think we've all given up on after a brief 6 month rally in those versus things like the Apple $19 cloth that you were talking about Yeah I think that you're in hell and oil in places like that is where you want to invest More so than a secular grower is like you just mentioned I've been asking guests over the last week Brent what are the pillars of support that will persist We can lean on through next year as well not just into year round BlackRock gave me two They said pent up demand that will persist and pricing power Do you share that view brand I do If you look right now for example on the consumer side of the equation the consumer has spent the prior 13 years deleverage in their balance sheet Their debt to net worth has gone from 24 to 12 The cost of that debt has gone from 18 to 12 And so the consumers healthy they have pent up demand and I think you're going to continue to see spending The question is going to be on these supply chains Can that snarls kind of alleviate a bit And I think they will as you move into the new year And so I think you'll have a setup where equities continue to push higher There's certainly our risk and I don't expect the same push that you had post COVID But I think on a relative basis stocks are still attractive relative to bonds just given the economic outlook and where the fed is Brett when you were saying that there is a lot of pessimism in markets where are you seeing that pessimism Yeah for example just the client visits the questions that I get are not what could go right It's what could go wrong And that's kind of a continual question that I get all the.

Say they are seeking to prove the illegitimacy of the capsule more. Broadly alleging that they are unconstitutional and interfere with negotiated contracts. They also questioned capping marketing services charged by the apps when the city doesn't do so for other online platforms that provide advertising to companies left. Unchecked the ordinance sets a dangerous precedent. The company said in the complaint now that restaurants can operate their dining rooms again. The new york city ordinance quote bears no relationship to any public health. Emergency of the company said it also interferes with freely negotiated contracts between platforms and restaurants by changing and dictating the economic terms on which a dynamic industry operates. They said the apps can charge restaurants commissions as high as thirty percent per order new york city temporarily. Capped wet apps could charge restaurants during the pandemic last month. It made the cap permanent saying that food. Delivery companies are prohibited from charging restaurants. More than twenty three percent of an order. Fifteen percent for delivery five percent for listing on apps and three percent for credit card processing fees that means grub which often relies on restaurants fulfilling deliveries received on. Its app would be limited to eight percent commission on such orders. Many of those caps expired as kobe. Nineteen cases lessened earlier this year but some lawmakers have sought to extend them giving complaints about the charges. Overall san francisco's board of supervisors enacted a permanent fifteen percent cap per order on food delivery fees in june the first city to institute a ceiling with no end date. The apps have also filed suit there and quote. What all of these companies. I'm sure no but what you might. Not if you're not a local. Is that the bar and restaurant. Industry is incredibly powerful here in new york city. Like one of the biggest lobbying forces around good restaurants a good nightlife. That's half the reason people live here in the first place and a lot of the reason tourists come here as well and that's why even in neighborhoods that tourists rarely see. There are still restaurants literally every corner here. Something tells me at least here in new york city. The restaurants are likely to win this battle. they're a meaningful segment of our tax base and these platforms are not with the pandemic disrupting markets. Finding promising investments is harder than ever. Luckily bloomberg asked their financial experts where they'd invest one hundred thousand dollars right now to help out investors the results they recommended investing in top performing alternatives like.

To testify. Bloomberg. Mark Herman has the very latest. So mark, where are we with this trial? Yes. So we are in the probably final week of the trial. Today we've heard Phil Schiller, the former senior VP of marketing and now an Apple fellow in charge of the APP store testifying to Apple's business practices why the APP store operates the way it does. And its interactions with developers. And we've also gotten a few interesting stats about how the APP stores run that there are 280,000 games out of two million total APS and how much it costs Apple to run its annual developer conferences. So talk to us about the case that has been made so far. It sounds like you've repeatedly come out of these hearings. Feeling like epic hasn't really proven Its case. I mean, I'm not a lawyer or anything, but I've been listening into most of the trial on a daily basis, and I have simply not heard any compelling arguments or seriously compelling argument for how Apple is doing something not necessarily wrong. But how it's really hurting developers on all levels. You've heard Microsoft testify you've heard in video testify. I don't think epic has brought any smoking guns to the table about Apple, you know, purposely trying to cross smaller developers. Personally, I think you know, Apple's APP store fees are a bit too high for the year 2021. Given the economies of scale. Maybe 30% made sense where there were very few APS on the store. But now that 30% is generating nearly 20 billion profit per year and spread out across two million APS, you know that 30% is worth a lot more to Apple than it was way back in the day. So I think that needs to change. And even Phil Schiller echoed that when Apple launched its program to slice the fees for developers to generate under a million per year from 30% to 15%, Schiller said, he argued for the cuts be below 15%. So I think this is something that Apple recognizes in some respect, too. But regardless of opinions, regardless of how bad you know, epic thinks Apple behaves Is a contract at stake. And the first thing you need to know about the legal world is if you have a contract, and it's legitimate and all parties have signed it, and there's no contractual issues there. You know, it's pretty hard to argue with that piece of paper with signatures, and that's what Apple for all intensive purposes has with epic at this point.
