Like with Willis, I think he's clearly wrong unprepared, but you know, he has like really interesting skills that could be developed. As far as I can tell, nobody thinks this guy has like NFL trades like any NFL, just no, I mean, I think in college, he's just a just a guy. You know, he's a guy. You know, this is like, this is like, you know, this is gonna be like some team's gonna drive a boat next in the 6th round this year. that he's gonna show up against Belichick. Yeah. Another, by the way, speaking of bad coaching hires since we're pretty clearly nearing the end of the cliff Kingsbury era and I don't know like I know rob you had some optimism about them this year that Eric and I did not share, but like can we talk about like so the theory of hiring camouflage tank correctly was that while very successful college coaches often fail. So what if we try the guy who couldn't win games with Patrick Mahomes? Like, let's switch things up. We have an unsuccessful college going, maybe that proves like it's great. Let's get Mark hellfried. Let's give Mark helfrich. A head coaching job in the NFL. I'm sure that's going to work out. I'm really curious, actually. I'm very curious. And I know we're looking forward on this. And it is a duck thing, but I think maybe we can end on this. I mean, Loomis, what do you think? Where is Bo going to end up in the NFL Draft? Well, so one thing that this is fascinating here, one thing that came up in the Oregon game is that actually has a year of eligibility. Really? I was unaware of that. But much like Dorian Robinson Thompson, something three other names, right? He seems to have been playing college football for like 17 years. Yes, yes. But he actually has another year. Yeah, so I mean, and it should be said, by the way, bonus has a nonzero chance of breaking organs all time single season, brushing touchdown record. He's been extraordinary. The all time record is 21 by Michael James. And so with about 6 games to go away, well, so you get three. 5 games to go, assuming that they go to the conference championship. Given the rate that he's been scoring the last couple of games, there's actually a chance here. So I don't know, it's hard because how do you evaluate a prospect like that? You know, who's in a terrible situation in auburn, which a program is just turned into an absolute clamshell.

"Goodyear. More driven. Hey, welcome back here on the middle of the week. We're about to jump on with Pete SAML in get his thoughts on the upcoming weekend as well as the CFP. Pete, let's start with the CFP and there's so many takeaways from last night. Intrigues you the most coming out of the second reveal. I think you just hear that breath of fresh air with new programs, Paul that we're going to be able to see in the college football playoff, obviously you have Tennessee right in the thicket of it of Oregon, which obviously made one appearance way back in the Mark helfrich era when they played for the title in the first year of the CFP. And then you have TCU who got snubbed that year and really hasn't been heard from at this level since. And so look, I'm sure there's some chaos theory where we could get the same old same old, but there's going to be some new. And that may involve a game being repeated that we've seen recently, but I do think there is just some juice and some energy for some new and for some heresy on this network, I guess. We could have two Big Ten teams right in the thicket of it as well with an argument for both to go the way that things have fallen. So we have been relatively controversy free in the college football playoff era, considering everything, considering all the variables, I think we put 32 teams in so far. And I would think maybe two of those 32 selections have come really shrouded in modest controversy. So I think we may be we may be priming for good little mud fight here to the end. And I realize we're coming up with arguments that may or may not exist, but one of them seems like and we were playing it in the clip a minute ago. What if it turns out to be a Tennessee versus Michigan conversation and I don't know how you figured that one out, do you? Yeah, which rematch would you like to see left? The one from last year or the one from last weekend. Exactly. Both of them were mismatches. There's no question. I think an interesting point there, Paul, is Tennessee went and played the defending ACC champion on the road. Not only that, they scheduled it 5 years ago with the intent to challenge themselves out of conference, Michigan canceled their game with UCLA. And that intent. Now look, it's hard. TCU played Colorado. Colorado hasn't been good for 20 years. But they at least like they challenge themselves with a power 5 game on the road. Michigan did no such thing, which is maybe help them form this dominating identity because they had times to find themselves. But they were supposed to play UCLA. They canceled that game the intent of their schedule is going to be a talking point in this because what I don't think the CFP committee wants to do is have Oregon cancel their Georgia game on a neutral field in order to play eastern Washington to just turtle up and preserve their record for the playoffs. So there's some fascinating philosophical debates that are going to go behind these team by team debates. Before we get to some coaching situations, I assume we're still waiting for the CFP to make its determination on when they're going to expand the playoffs. Are we any closer to that decision? It seems like they need to be moving on that if they're going to get it done soon. Yeah, the safe thing to assume about the CFP is the same safe thing to assume about NCA fractions cases. It will move slowly. It is log jam right now with a few of the issues that have been reiterated. I'm sure on your show the last few weeks, the rose bowl again, Paul has emerged as a thicket issue, which I'm sure will be greeted with a lot of eye rolls and a few choice words throughout the southeastern part of the country. And I'm sure there's quite a few commissioners that aren't in the Big Ten in the pack 12 who would also be greeting this with gridded teeth. The important part to remember about the CFP pre 2026, meaning years 11 and 12 years contract is it has to be unanimous. And you have ten conferences and Notre-Dame who all have vastly different agendas preferences, boards, presidential groups who make them up. So landing the plane on this was never going to be easy because you have to get everyone to get along. And look, some people are taking victory laps for getting to 12. Well, it took an extra basically a year and a half to get to 12. The college football postseason has a doctorate in making easy things hard. And they certainly are not going to abdicate that reputation once they get to the end here. I do just think, and I've said this on your show a bunch that there's billions of dollars at stake and money is the most powerful gravity. But right now, there are certainly some inertia and there's some things to work out. And the room is the room is complicated with the rose bowl at the forefront. Pete, joining us Pete, we were together Saturday morning in Athens, and we talked about the auburn situation. That was as John Cohen was getting his GPS figured out to find out where his office was in auburn. He's landed now. He has spoken to the media, where are we on that coaching search? Yeah, well, we have two recent coaching searches of John Cohen at Mississippi state to kind of go by and give us a blueprint of what could happen here at auburn Paul. And John Cohen is, as he sort of humble bragged about his 58 point plan or whatever it was, he is going to be thorough and he is going to be maniacal and that obviously helped them land Mike leitch, which was a solid higher for Mississippi state. They came pretty straight from left field when you look back when you look back at how that search unfolded, I guess it was two years ago. And then obviously he hired Joe moorhead, which didn't work and he moved on quickly from him. But those who've worked with John Cohen on searches will tell you he choose candidate after candidate over and over and over. There's going to be no stone left unturned I know that's an awful cliche in these things. But John Cohen loves coaching searches. He loves to challenge. He loves, he's a former coach himself. He loves analyzing numbers, analytics will be heavily involved in everything he does. It will be a painstaking and laborious process. He's just not going to sit back and hope someone lands on the doorstep. So they're diving in now. And I think the prominent names there remain the same as we talked about on Saturday morning call. You're looking at Matt rule, lane kiff and Hugh freeze, Bill O'Brien, Mark stoops, you know, somewhere in that in that range, but John Cohen definitely has made it clear he wants to go big and he wants auburn to reemerge in the national conversation, which it has faded from in recent years. There's only one of those coaches who is currently at home. I don't know whether he's at home or not, but he's not coaching, and that's not real. A couple of years ago, one of the top coaches in college at Bayer, that's how he ended up getting the money in the NFL. What can you tell us about real other than I believe he's getting $40 million to sit home? Yeah, I think in a lot of ways, Matt rule will be the hottest candidate in this cycle. And if he chooses to sit out because he doesn't think the jobs are good enough, he'd be the hottest candidate in the next cycle. So it's going to be a matter of how Matt rule is courted by the Nebraska as an auburn of the world. He definitively wants to return to college. Look his tenure in the NFL was a failure. It didn't go well. And I think it's human nature to want to go back and improve yourself. He was an excellent college coach. He took temple up and made it a conference title winner. I mean, temple was so bad in my lifetime. They got kicked out of the big east. And the biggie doesn't even exist anymore, so they got kicked out of a conference that doesn't happen.

"Reward hiring of this cycle, and why is the answer yes? It's an interesting question because obviously you have a coordinator who just come off leading, helping Georgia win a national title. I think why I would think risk reward, the thing that was curious to me about damn land and getting the job is just the last two guys that Oregon is hired, have no real connections to that area, both those both Willie Tiger and Mario crystal were Florida guys. Dan lining is definitely not from the West Coast. Now, we spent a little time there at ASU, but so you wonder if things go pretty well for him. You know, does he get lured away for another job? Because that's what's happened with the last two. I mean, that's if it goes well. So on that standpoint it was a little bit of a head scratcher for me that they would hire somebody who didn't have more of a connection to the West Coast or to the program. I was wondering if by risk he meant some of the hires he's made on his staff. Who have previous NCAA issues in their past? Does he mean by risk, risk of the program going on probation? I didn't think he meant that way, but look, at this point, I feel like the NCA is toothless. Yeah. I honestly I'd be surprised if that would be a fear or a consideration for a university to who gets hired on whose staff. The guys I'm referring to tachi was investigated by the NCA when he was at Washington, obviously he went on to Alabama and Adrian clem actually got slapped on the wrist by the NCA when he was at UCLA. But I think the reward that he would be referring to is that Dan landing was the coordinator of the most dominant defense college football has seen in a long, long time. Some of the stats around that defense are just absolutely insane. They gave up 13 touchdowns in 15 games, four of which came in one game. So 9 touchdowns in the other 14 games. And a lot of those were in garbage time. So obviously the hope here is that he's going to turn Oregon into a defensive juggernaut like that. Now the only problem I would say is, do we really know how much of that was Dan landing and how much of it was Kirby smart? Or how much was that they had a ridiculous amount of talent there? In the front salmon. Yes, they had a ridiculous amount of talent in the front 7, and again, rob Mullins hasn't really come out and said this, the idea at Oregon, but they got a taste of that with Mario christoval. They got a taste of instead of the chip Kelly Mark helfrich kind of overachieving, if you will, relative to recruiting rankings. Mario brought in top ten classes and 5 star guys that came on thibodeau of the world. And all due to given the way Georgia recruited when landing was there, you know, I think the hope is that he will continue that if not get even better in terms of bringing in high end talent. Let me ask you a question. Give me the two biggest names in this hiring cycle or Lincoln Riley going to USC Brian Kelly going to Notre-Dame. Give me a hire. I'm sorry. Sorry. Give me a hire, and then we can maybe take Billy Napier out of Florida on this. Give me a higher that maybe is not one of those three because I know we like the Billy Napier hire both. That you think, man, I think that's a higher that was a really good fit and probably people haven't talked enough about. And a higher while you're looking at this and the higher that you're very intrigued how it goes. Gosh, just looking at this list, you're like, just how many coaching changes there were this year? A lot. I think kalen Deborah could do well at Washington. That is the higher I would say. That wasn't the one I was going to say is the one that I think was a big home run. I actually say as I'm looking at this list, there are a lot. I am very curious about there are a lot of, for instance, Texas tech went out and got Joey Maguire. I think that was one of the first ones if not the first one. And he's not exactly a big name. But they clearly saw something there where they went out and got that done. Sonny dykes succeeding Gary Parrish on a TCU. By the way, did you see the pictures from the basketball Texas basketball game last night? Yes, I did. Gary Patterson on a level of one to ten, how much would you say Gary Patterson hated Texas when he was a TCU? 98. I saw so we saw Gary Patterson in San Antonio at the convention, talk to him for a while. The first night I was there. And. This is going to be an interesting fit with him as a special assistant to the head coach. So for people who aren't aware of what we're talking about, Gary Patterson has joined the support staff, if you will, at Texas, he will use these. I'm sorry, yeah. Is that the text? He's at the Texas basketball game on Tuesday night and there are pictures of him talking to crystal. His old boss, who used to be his boss at TCU now is boss again at Texas and he's wearing the LongHorn swag. And it's so crazy to see that. I know sometimes, again, he couldn't have hated them more. He took such glee and beating them, and now he is working with sark at Texas. It should be, it's going to be interesting. But yeah, you look a lot of these names. Give me one hire that you are early in the off season. We're not really early in his tenure at Yukon. Give me one, give me one higher that I really like and it can't be you said it can't be Lincoln Riley Brian Kelly or a billionaire? Yes, correct. I'm sorry. Those were the ground rules. I do really like crystal ball. I feel like after all the Miami has cycled through coach after coach after coach looking for the right fit. And nobody is more Miami than Mario Cristobal, South Florida, the Mario Cristobal, and while he didn't ultimately take that next step up the wrong and make the playoff, they did have a lot of success the last few years at Oregon. So is he the guy that can finally get if he can't get them back to being the you? I don't know who can. Yeah, I would agree with that. I would say it is Joe moorhead at Akron. It's not far from where he's from in Pittsburgh. I think he did extremely well at fordham. Did okay, but not good enough at the Mississippi. It was just a bad fit, but I think he will do exceptionally well there. So that would be mine. I think you will too, but are you telling me you're gonna are you gonna be a close, you'd be watching a lot of acker games this coming season? I will, 'cause they're on the weekend they're on the weekdays and they're at odds too. I watch probably more Mac than I watched. Look, I watched a bunch of mountain west because it would be on Friday nights on CBS Sports Network. "You know they both their coaches now don't have to fake it with either team. You know, there's not something like saving this week. Try and, uh, you know, convinced his team that they're not that good. Even though they blew out the number 14 team in the country. Oregon was tied with Fresno State in the second half. In Ohio State trailed at halftime, So it's not just the opponent that gets, you know, obviously play another right team. It gets your team's attention, bill. But like there's both real reason for both of these coaches to have these teams grounded and remind them that they're not that good. Yeah, I think that that's true. I think either the faster you can kind of learn what you have, and that goes for the coaches and the players to could like we talked about earlier. I did a lot of young guys who were experiencing but basically experiencing college football at its highest level for the first time last week. Now they know what it's like. Right. Brian David is like 10 different times as in practice as much as you want. You can watch as much film as you want, but you don't know what it's actually like until you get on the field for a game and and it's to their benefit that they got on the field for the game. In a game where they didn't play well, they would have lost. So so I do think you're right. I think I think there's not many like sleepwalking into the skin. And I think if you look around the country, for instance, like Michigan's playing Washington Michigan kicked the crap out of western Michigan last week, and I'm sure they're feeling really good about themselves. But I don't know how much of that was real, right? That would be like a little nervous if I was Michigan or Michigan tangling. Absolutely, because you know Washington to just lost to Montana and Right now. They're probably thinking like, okay like this was devastating loss, but we got a chance to make up for and win this game on Saturday. Um, who do you think the game is more important to who do you think needs? This needs a win here more Oregon or Ohio State Bill. Oregon. I think the Pac 12 needs and then Oregon is sort of the Pac 12 champion this week. I think it's a game where and we've seen it actually happened with Ohio State in the past. Ohio State loses this game for whatever reason. I don't think it's what happened, but it's possible if you were to lose that game. They could just bounce back when the rest of the games when the big 10 and cost for football when they got beat by Oklahoma, right and Mayfield, you know, put the flag down or whatever. That's what you're talking about. 2014. They lost Virginia Tech. Yeah, right. So? So it's not to say that like if Ohio State loses whatever it's okay like Obviously, you'll dissect that and figure out what's wrong. It was their season long problems, but I think in terms of like narrative and momentum and stuff like that The Pac 12 really needs a game like this, like they have become such an afterthought among the power conferences. Um and we have a little different because the big 12 it's kind of getting blown up. But even with that, like, I don't think there's much respect for the past 12 nationally. Where do I think they deserve? Recommend not played well or competed well against the major conferences when they get there so before going to come to Columbus and win this game, I think that would be a nice feather in the cap for not only that program, but I think is on the up a little bit on the merrier. Crystal ball, but also for a conference that need to get something back. They've won two straight Pac 12 titles, and they're really a fairly anonymous team. You know what I mean? Bill like when they had Chip Kelly, and they went to a national championship game, they played Ohio State so You know, they were obviously way more in the public spotlight. They also went to. They also played Auburn and lost in the championships. They were truly a great team, but they were synonymous with something you know they played faster. Than anybody in college football. They wore the funky uniforms. They tried to score. 70 points a game like you knew it. Oregon's identity was I have no Mario Crystal by that name has been around college football for like 20 years, But I have no clue who Oregon's trying to be. You know, you had to pay attention to them a lot more than I have this week. But like, I don't know what their team DNA is. You know what I mean? Yeah, I don't know if I have a good feel for that, either. It's funny like we were. We were in Ryan based press conference this week. And part of it, I guess is because Ryan has some connection. The chip Kelly being beaten was Ryan, College coordinator, right? But there were a lot of questions about what Chip Kelly's Oregon this week and I think to myself like why are we been asking this? Because this is not that thing program? We're not that far from took Kelly today, but this is not the same program there. They They need to miss that phone the way I think promoting Mark Helfrich and then hiring. Really, tiger. Um, I think set them back quite a bit. And I like what Mario Crystal ball is doing there. He recruits really well, if you look at the talent readings that just sort of measure recruiting stars basically in higher roster set up, we're going top 10. Nationally and like composite talent. They have five star prospect, especially on the defensive side of the ball. But this is not the fast paced, high flying. What is this? Like revolutionary offense kind of deal The chip Kelly had going on there. I think they're very much trying to figure out what they want to be offensively defensively. There's a little bit better of an idea, and that's the place of a lot of speed in place really aggressively. But the offense doesn't seem to kind of match that mentality. And it's a little odd to kind of think of a defense. First Oregon program after which have Kelly Gilbert totally agree. Do you feel like right now, based on one week of data watching the Big 10 last Saturday going into today? Do you feel right now like this will be Ohio State's biggest test and toughest game this year. Um No, maybe not possibly which one. It was kind of a cop out. I'm curious about Penn State. I thought Penn State's defense would really good on the road against Wisconsin in the first week, and that's a team that's also trying to figure out figure itself out offensively, and I do think it has Relatively low offensive feeling because I just don't think their quarterbacks particularly good,.

Okay, so that meant your offense was getting better The second time around with Mitch, you could build on that for next year. You could make a case. Won't buy it. I know we didn't play well this year, the last few games we feel like we've turned a corner because of running the football. More of Mitch is more you can make that case. Can you make that case?
