They're all major factors that can wreak havoc on your plumbing system. But the pros at Best Plumbing know just how to tackle it. So Devon, what are some of the signs Homeowners need to look out for drains flowing very slowly. I can't imagine Seattle's is weather going to help. Weather and rain is a huge factor especially in Seattle. Older homes have their downspouts tied into the system sewer so oftentimes what can happen is as we have rainfall it's still going into your sewer system and can cause backups if there's any kind of blockages and of course if it has nowhere to go it's coming right back into the home. So what can homeowners do to be proactive about their drains? Yeah the best plumbing service that we provide is we actually have sewer camera equipment so we can actually go in and do a like kind of preventative diagnostic. Also we do provide drain cleaning services try to get ahead some of those problems that may occur. Devin and his team at Best Plumbing are there for you 24 -7. Find them online at BestPlumbing .com. "Starfish space was awarded the contract to assess the feasibility of capturing and collecting orbital debris as a first step towards removing it from Earth orbit autonomously. The contract builds upon the company's current Otterpup orbital demonstration mission. Starfish co -founder Trevor Bennett says the full -size Otter spacecraft, expected to be operational in 2025, will be capable of performing two types of autonomous commercial missions. One is geolife extension. That is these big satellites that need a few extra years of life. And the other one is Leo constellation cleanup. And so this is removing satellites old out. He says the new project will set a foundation for the future. Autonomous interaction in orbit is really going to be a key for building this industry up. It's going to be a key for how we scale from just few a thousand satellites to 100 ,000 satellites. GeekWire reports the contract's value was not announced. Kathy O 'Shea, Northwest News Radio. Here's another story we want to make sure you know of here as we go through the stories here ending for the week of October 7th. Southern resident orcas sometimes attack, even kill porpoises, but never do they eat them. Now scientists working to understand the violent behavior. Southern resident killer whales famously eat only salmon, but they have been observed on 78 occasions 60 over years attacking porpoises, singly and with other orcas, ramming them, tossing them in carrying the air, them in their mouths and often killing these much smaller animals. Now a new scientific paper by Friday Harbor based researchers Wild Orca finds the violent behavior happens mostly among juvenile orcas and could be seen as a form of play. The paper theorizes the porpoise harassment benefits group coordination, cohesion and social affiliation. Killing the porpoise seems not to be the goal. Orcas have been seen tossing around a porpoise corpse long after it's dead. Southern resident orcas struggle to find enough Chinook salmon to eat, but in these porpoise attacks in not a single incident was an orcas take seen to one as much bite as of its porpoise prey. Corwin Haake, Northwest News Radio. I'm Mark Christopher, you're listening to Northwest News this week. A number of problems with how Washington State distributed pandemic aid for schools. Appears county judge has ordered a woman to be put in jail for not isolating with tuberculosis. Komal for his Hannah Knowles says neighbors in the women's Tacoma neighborhood are concerned. Tacoma woman who has been avoiding treatment for TV for more than a year, reportedly lives in this neighborhood. This is the first I'm hearing of it, and I live right across the street. The woman's attorney claims she has mental issues and can't understand the significance of court proceedings, or even that she has a contagious medical condition at all. I want her to help herself and taking consideration everybody else in the community. Last month, the judge ordered the pierce county jail to transport her to a treatment facility, but the only problem is no one knows where she is. You should right now is she's refusing to cooperate with anything. Family members haven't helped us to locate her. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the treatment can take three to 9 months. The disease can be spread through air when a contagious person coughs speaks or even sings. And Tacoma, Hannah Knowles, come on in. A deadly confrontation with police in Everett Friday afternoon leaves a man dead. "To you Rajiv. You surround yourself with people who don't mind the sirens kind of loud outside the studio here. But you surround yourself with people who really do know what they're doing here in the puget sound. And indeed, do give us a call. Now, ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately, our fortunately, northwest news radio has very recently moved into new studios and this time awesome. And they sound great, but we are still in the process of getting the new numbers or such. So we're going to really hard to get the new number if we can in the next couple of minutes for you to call in. Obviously, you know, moving studios at times can be numbers change. Emails change and technology changes. So real quick, shout out to mark Christopher. I know this is a pay program and show and everything, but shout out to mark Christopher. On the controls in a brand new, I mean, I've been there before at another station where it's like a new spaceship and I just got to say shout out to him, he's doing an excellent job. So for those of you who work in radio, who know what it's like to me from station to station is about reference to. It's interesting. So we're going to get that new number for you very soon. So stay tuned on that because we want to hear your questions right here on aging options. In the meantime, as we wait on Maria, very exciting time Rajiv, because today, three seminars. Oh, sorry, check that. Today, there's a seminar. There's two coming up next week. You have a book. A book on Amazon and international bestseller. You've also got a TV show coming up that's airing in puget sound. Do tell, this is an exciting time for you, Rajiv. Yeah, I mean, things are just happening 22 years. I've been a lawyer. I've been working on the same issues, which is helping people understand. That aging, the way that we go about planning for our futures is generally not the very best way that we can go about planning. There is a better way of doing it. And it is now subject of two PBS shows and a book that has just come out in the PBS shows are playing. I got a call from not a call. It got several calls and emails from clients and said, hey, I saw you on the TV and stuff. And so surprise, surprise. I was there. And so it's a great show. This show that is that is playing currently. It really is about the housing issue, you know, that we talk about on a regular basis. There's 70% of Americans will not be able to live out the lives in their own home. This PBS show really is a deep dive into the housing part of the work that I do as part of my life planning series or the LP 5 retirement planning system that we have created. And housing turns out to be the crux of everything. So great show, great book. If you haven't looked at that, give us a call. We can talk about it or you can just go to Amazon by the book or budu kbp or quesadilla, maybe find a time when the next earring is going to be, and we can catch the show. Indeed, I'm staring at it. All my computer, I'm staring at your retirement dreamer disaster right now on Amazon. Let me tell you, not only does he know how to write a book, he knows how to put together a pretty compelling cover too. And the cover tells a story, a good one. Hey, we're gonna take a quick break here, but be sure to call in to the program. We'll get that number to you very, very soon. And stay with us. He said that means cuts to police and firefighters. Healthcare and other spending across the board. Biden said the cuts would not reduce the deficit. California officials keep at a close eye on swollen rivers as a powerful storm system dumps heavy rain on the state this weekend, an intense stream of subtropical moisture called that atmospheric river that we know of here is sweeping into central California with a heavy rain is melting all the mountains. Of course there's been a challenge over the last couple of weeks here, turning streams in the raging rivers, officials in Santa Cruz county, there say a town of 10,000 people have been isolated by flooded roads. In fact, in state officials say at least two flood related deaths have been confirmed. So much rain that looks like officials are closed pretty much all the beasts beaches there in LA county that are on the coast because all the water and chemicals they're saying and bacteria that are ending up in the water and apparently to slick. I guess that's what we call it of the chemicals here in bacteria is reaching from the actual shore out a half mile up to a mile out. That's how much has been washed with all the storms that have been going on here. Bringing it back home here in northwest news, some popular trees along the waterfront. "Family members. The full House likes this bill, it voted 95 to nothing to advance it to the state Senate, corwin hake, northwest, news radio. I'm Mark Christopher and again, we're helped you catch up to the top stories of the past week here ending for the week of March the fourth. It's northwest news this week. If you block the sun, earth would be plunged into darkness with potentially catastrophic consequences, as we learned in this 1995 episode of The Simpsons. Imagine it's electrical lights and heaters running all day long. But sir, every planet tree will die. Owls will definitely with incessant hooting. The town sundial will be useless. But what if you just limit how much sunlight comes through the atmosphere? Could it halt climate change? The idea of solar geoengineering may be attractive. But the U.S. intelligence community worries it could lead to war. Like a burn bomb is with The Washington Post and took a further look at this information and spoke with our own Taylor van size, sharing this with our listeners. Michael first explain how a nation would go about the solar geoengineering process. It hasn't been done before. And scientists are still researching it. The basic idea seems pretty clear. They take some airplanes, they have the spray sulfur out the back of the airplanes and that sulfur would go up into the atmosphere and reflect some of the power of the sun back upward. And so it would sort of be like simulating a really big volcanic explosion that would reduce the power of the sun all around the world. And as we know from our experience with Mount St. Helens here in the northwest, when the volcano goes, it doesn't just stay ash overhead. It goes all around the world, right? So that presumably would be the case with this sulfur that's being sprayed about. That's exactly right. So you need a whole bunch of airplanes and you need a whole bunch of sulfur, but it's not impossibly large and so it seems like it probably is a technique that could work if some country or private citizen decide to do it at some point. But why does the U.S. intelligence community think this could lead to conflict? What sort of exercise did they run to arrive at that conclusion? So the basic idea is that doing this could reduce global temperatures by a couple of degrees on average. But it would do all sorts of strange things to the global climate. It could reorient the pattern of rainfall, make monsoons, go to different places, make crops, not grow as well because they're not getting as much sunlight could increase rates on someplace to decrease in others. And the worry that the U.S. intelligence community has is that without some sort of global framework for discussing how to use this, one country could decide to do it, for example, in the middle of a terrible heat wave that's killing a lot of their citizens if they feel they need to take matters into their own hands. So different countries, you think, hey, that's a terrible idea if they're suffering crop failures or other expenses. And the worry is that conflict could result. And so the U.S. intelligence community did an exercise last year in which they kind of ran through the scenario. They pretended just this thing happened. And they went through to try to figure out what they could do to minimize the risk of conflict. Is any nation ready to implement solar geoengineering? Well, there are several working on that question. You can find out much more about that. Online at Washington Post dot com in this latest from Michael Byron baum. As a climate warms in the Pacific Northwest, we might see an increased number of bearers all of a sudden. Jeff Paul juler explains. Research at the University of Washington has found that climate change appears to be beneficial to certain species, including the grizzly bear. Specifically, the amount of usable habitat for the grizzlies expected to increase, raising the carrying capacity or the number of bears the environment can safely handle. Scientists say climate change will bring more wildfires, which create openings in the tree Canopy, allowing certain plants to grow back more quickly. Among them, huckleberry

Once again, I'm Mark Christopher rich lions working away here as our editor. So finally, we got to winner of that February 7th $54 million Powerball jackpot of course it was popular because for a while there it was 7 47 and it arrived just days after we were doing all the retirement of such a jetliner for the Boeing company. Becky bell of auburn, 36 year old Boeing supply chain analyst. Could this get any better? Moved up from her retirement date we're seeing to the end of this month after she trains her replacement, Christy weeks from Washington's lottery saying they had a party at their Olympia headquarters complete with a cake and the oversized novelty check but no actual check because bell took the sum by wire transfer. Way to go week says it took longer than expected so she offered to email confirmation to her. Can you imagine? And she looked me dead in the eye and said, no, I would like to receipt. So she ran it a little bit longer. We were able to give her her receipt showing what her love son payment was, how much was sent to the IRS on her behalf and how much was just transferred to her bank account. How many times mom and dad? All right, husband and wife got a receipt. So weeks also reminded us Belle only had to pay that nearly $98 million federal income tax, but nothing to the state since Washington has no income tax. So again, the total jackpot, of course, and then they'll break it down 754 $1 million. I heard the wire transfer took about an hour and a half. How much money was involved. Fire destroyed that abandoned building and Lake city early yesterday. We have more to what exactly happened there. So coma four

"Coma. Homo news flooring, wall colors, furniture accessories She's got you covered. This is inside out with Tammy Michaels. I am telling Michael's and, you know, mark. It's a good day, These phone lines are lighting up. You mentioned the folks that they may want to stay home today, and I think they're staying home and they're they're listening to us because he's phone lines are already jammed. Can you give out our phone numbers, sir? Yeah, I'm anxious to get some good questions that you're looking at that last. Yeah. All right. If you want to add to the fun here, no experience necessary. There's no membership. It's just talk to Tammy. No matter your experience for home improvement, Let's see where we go. Two old 6421 1000 for Seattle everywhere else you're listening in western Washington. You bet. 877397 56 66. I always tell people buckle up. Make sure your tray table is in the upright locked position because this show just flies by it goes so fast. I can't believe it myself. Look up, and two hours are just gone. And then the phone lines were so jammed. It's very sad. I can't get all the colors so calling in early is a big deal. I believe the pronunciation is SAS. And as our first caller Welcomes ass in my production it correctly. Yeah. Oh, Beth. I don't know. Okay, You know, I it This is something that I would like to say. Radio is the theater of the mind. And if you could see us normally be like the set of Frasier, we're all in one booth. We're all you know, sometimes just his glass separating us. No, it looks to me like Mark Christopher, my producer. He's waving at me like, you know, 20 ft away, Kelly Blair that you know, the absolute engineer news producer. That's here is well, I mean, we all look like we're landing planes with hand signals. So getting names. I really apologize. But welcome back. Don't worry. How are you? And how can I help you? I have one question and hopefully to make it simple and easy. Good bye. Um, my parents are late eighties live in their own home. Expected to stay there with Life expectancy, you know at least five years or less. And my father has Parkinson's. And so I'm sorry. I want to alter. That Shower of their master bedroom bathroom so it can accommodate his disability. Yes, So it's one of those, you know, it's 25 or more years old. And why those just sour in shirts with the little feet Now, those like whatever they call, Yes, but you see, it's homely people or whatever. So that's in the bathroom. The tile, the floor is tiles. Okay? On and it's all on, you know, so that take it away. OK, well, so one of the things that I want you to know it's more and more people consider what we refer to us aging in place. 88 compliance Americans with Disabilities Act, and there's a lot of things that we can do when it comes to showers to create not on Lee a safe environment, but one that is, in fact, quite comfortable. So I'm going to give you shower when a one on one page and you're going to be able to learn everything you ever wanted to know and more About showers than anybody could ask by sending you to the breeze. Oh page. They actually have an entire page on designing a shower and what you would be looking for because a lot of times people think with Ada compliance. They're just looking at a hand showered assist. Someone in being able to bait but also, you know, having a reticulated arm having the flexibility of a joint in the arm of that shower head to think about that that is so that you could maneuver that if some peace in a wheelchair just rolled in without having to do a lot of things to change the shower. That's why what you're doing right now is so important. And then there's some nerd speaks that I'll throw in here and when you get into some of the more complex and yet making it so simple, brief, so shower systems you don't need divert ear's for all of these different systems, meaning that behind the wall, you do not need to have your plumber just hear things apart. It's like set up very simply, a good plumber will understand. How to install just about everything, but I'm going to say, where do you live? A coma. Oh, that's perfect. Okay, that's perfect. Because where I'm going to send you is to the two coma. Ferguson. And Colin, advance making appointment and please tell them that I sent you in and also tell them that you want to see their shower accessories and packages for a D a complaints. It's so much easier if you're actually sitting there to see it because what you're going to want is you're going to want to be able to have what we would call. I'll simplify the language you want to be able to roll in. To that shower. Somebody has a walker. That means it's going to be a different layout that it would be if you have these shower doors that you have to worry about. So those are the kinds of things that you should be thinking about and talking about. How could I More specifically answer your question? Because there must be a size of this house. I don't, uh, have a lot of states and it's not a large bathroom. On more of a traditional site bathroom and I don't want to get expanding it because Can't expand into the bedroom. I don't want to make it a big deal because Like expectancy is low. And so I'm just trying to make it so it's workable. Okay, without because somebody else coming in when we sell this house. That will be put back to a normal sized bathroom. Right behind the wall of the shower is a sauna, and I don't want to get into that. Wana area? Yes. Well, I think these you're very good questions. So I'm still going to send you to the same location. But here's what I want to do is I do in fact, want you to go if you go to The breeze. Oh, page and it says breeze. Oh shower systems. What's really lovely about this page? It's going to teach you how to speak shower. So it shows a small shower, which is pressure balance shower. What of nerds speak in there? But if you get on that page that one page now you're going to walk in, just like you're shopping for a car and you're going to know the questions to ask. You're also going to know a little bit about the finish is because you know what? Even though you're saying that that the life expectancy for this individual You know, maybe limited. Sometimes people surprise you, and that's convey a good thing, And we want a shower. Also, that if you've spent the money on it that it adds to the resale to the home, and that's highly possible. So also the temper pressure is important. And since story is about everything and anything you ever wanted to know about showers. It's a whole page. You can see it for yourself and go through a checklist of everything you need for that shower. But your hand shower's gonna be the biggest friend and that's really important meaning a shower you could hold in your hand. It also could even walk into the actual showerhead and I'll explain a little bit more about that. I just got a great example. How phone call? It could be so beneficial to your project call. You bet in Seattle to all 6421 1000. And we've also got 877397 56 66 more Tammy Michaels and inside out Just ahead here. A coma. Hey, there. Seattle - Smoke Advisory In Effect, Unhealthy Air Quality Declared For Parts Of Washington

"Effect through the weekend. Here in Washington. We have the worst air in the world right now. Joining Portland in San Francisco. For the dubious honor comes Mark Christopher. Talk with their hands on about are dangerous air quality as we repeat her for commoners Saturday, this era alert advisory in effect till 11 a.m. Monday simply stay indoors. Don't plan to go anywhere. In fact. Many of your hangouts for the weekend already closed down. If not, they're adding to the list of we speak. Just encourage everybody to stay home boat ramps We see. Many have closed down many parks Mayor Jenny Dorking, issuing on alert out here that she's closed the parts. Around the city. Many of the beaches have been closed. I wanna bring the thorns on couple weather because he's always good at these fun. I'm not gonna say fun facts but just fax about the smoke. How bad is it there in? We've had this before. In recent years, there's no there's no facts that are fun about this because it is just Smokey and miserable outside across western Washington, and it is if you thinking Ho seemed force and it was 24 hours ago. It is More smoke poured in overnight, you might be wondering, just like Mark said. You know, we've had smoked before. Why have we not had situations as Dyer's is quite that often? Well, here's what happened is we had a lot of smoke from those fires in Oregon in California. The smoke your breathing Today is not necessarily Washington smoke. It smells like organ smoke. You're right. Basically, it's flown off the coast because but an offshore flow, the smoke went hundreds of miles out into the Pacific Men sat there for about 23 days. Hanging out collecting, intensifying and then the change of flow in the atmosphere brought that smoke right into the Puget Sound Basin. And then we have sort of Ah, triple whammy. We have the flow that brought the smoke here. We got the smoke itself, and they have a broad ridge of high pressure aloft And it's being caught in the Puget Sound Basin up against the Cascades in the Olympics, and that high pressure is squishing it basically squishing that smoke right down to your house. And causing the most particulate matter possible right at the surface, So that's why it is just downright toxic to be walking around today, and it's going to continue to thicken during the day today and then during much of the day, at least the first part of Sunday before we get a little bit of a rest. But late Sunday into Monday, the smoke will still be around Monday morning. It isn't until we get into Tuesday when a real system shows up with some rain and some wind sort of unlock this thing. This smoke this locked in here, thanks to high pressure. Take the high pressure off, basically take the lid off the pot. And get the smoke out of here and get us some cleaner air. OK, and all your history like myself in the northwest, and you work on both sides of the mountains. You don't wanna smoke before here is this just like off the charts? This is off the charts. There has been maybe one other time in the last 15 to 20 years. It has been this bad in western Washington. When it comes to unhealthier made. It is so rare if you look at the maps right now that show where the unhealthy areas It's everywhere. It's all of Washington State. Right now, you could go out to the coast and go in the inland areas. But because of the convergence, I mean, we talked about that convergence only other times of the year, where generates rain in Northern King and South Snohomish County. Well, we have sort of a smoke convergence zone. Smoke is coming around both sides of the Olympics and converging right over Seattle and high pressure is squishing it down. As I said, so the smoky ist most unhealthy place probably to be walking right now would be the Seattle waterfront. Okay, let's compare again. Not a fun fact. But just something we've learned over the years. Compared to the smog that l A is always usually having. Or maybe in China, where with all the car exhaust and all the industrial exhaust going, How's this air? Compared, will we at this particular moment? Looking outside? And these step? The stats confirm. We have the worst air quality in the world right now. Here, here here in Seattle. You're looking at the worst. You can go anywhere in the world and you'll find better air. Then here right now, so it is terribly unhealthy. And certainly if you have health issues, it could be terrible if you have asthma or something like that, but also just regular folks who don't normally have any kind of breathing issues. Don't be jogging. Don't go and wash the car. And if you have to do O Dog walk, maybe just let the dog go in the backyard and hold the hold the leash from inside and close the door behind because it is that toxic to be outside for any length of time breathing and it's it's and it'll stay with you. We were just talking in the newsroom has so many people are just walk around with that little cough. Go on, and it feels like we all have it. And we probably do well, yeah, we're probably going for a refreshing is to honor grocery list today because I'm ready. Smelling it.
