"The Giants come up with Mike Talk man here in the top of the first and we've got baseball for you on this Sunday morning in San Francisco Sunday, early afternoon in D. C at Nationals Park. The first pitch to Mike Hawkman is a fastball called the Strike. It's only one Mark Carlson is our home plate umpire and Mark already has shown us that it could be a pitcher friendly strikes on that one was off the plate, but he called it a strike. It's on one to talk Hman. Here is the second pitch of the game from Joe Ross and talk Man swings and misses there. A fastball, same spot. He swung at this one. Strike to Jeremy Rigs. The umpire at first Jordan Baker at second, and Chris Siegel is the umpire along the third baseline. We started right on time, one Oh, five. And it's a beautiful 80 degrees in D. C on Sunday afternoon. Oh, to pitch to talk, man. He swings and misses. Strike three. Wow, that fastball is right out over the plate. So Mike talk about three pitches and out to start the game one away. For Mike your Stransky Game time attempt sponsored by UCSF Health. Three. Defining possible again. 80 degrees on Sunday afternoon in D. C. So Joe Ross Berkley native went to Bishop O'Dowd High School. Just across from where we sit. We can almost see Bishop o down high school from our Hawaiian Airlines broadcast booth. That's where we are today. Long way away from the Giants. Here's the pitch to Ustream ski, and that sinker is a high strike given by Karlsson on one Giants offense, trying to get it revved up here. Chains have played three games in D. C. They've scored three runs. And yet they've won two of the three games. One pitch that slider misses low. So the count is one ball and one strike three games 24 innings Giants offense has had 12 hits. And only two extra base hits in 24 innings against nationals pitching In this series Amazing 11 that one misses way inside will make that are by the numbers sponsored by Comcast business. Be fast, be flexible, bounce forward with Comcast business. And if you heard the Giants manager Gabe Kapler, his attitude is well, all that is true, and yet we have a chance to win the series. 21 pitch the Ostrovsky. He swings and he crushes one to right field toward the corner. This one is off the wall right in front of 3. 35 Soto plays the caramel relays it back in, but you stream skis into second with a one out double. And a great sign for Mike That's back to back games with an extra base hit. He had that only other extra base hit aside from Posey's home run as a pinch hitter in Game two yesterday. Now he gets a hanging breaking bond. He ripped it. Ostrowski is close to having two home runs in this series. Instead, he's got two doubles. Yaz is at second with one out for Buster Posey. They swing. Good to see will set the Nationals defense for you behind Joe Ross. As we get a second Ross check second base. And now pitches to Buster who takes a fastball for a strike. A sinker coming back to the plate. It's on one Posey. If you heard Gabe Kapler, there was some debate about whether Buster would play today, played in one game yesterday, the.

"The Yankees and the Rays leading off for the Yankees, the American League batting champion D. J. Lo Batting second in right field. Aaron Judge hitting third in centerfield Aaron Hicks, cleanup hitter is the major league leader. Home runs this year. Luke void at first base batting fifth. Th ng Giancarlo Stanton hitting six The third base, Geo or Shelagh. Number seven hitter for the Yankees is their shortstop. Labor Torres, batting eighth and left field Clint Frazier and batting ninth and catching Kyle Higashio, CA on the mound for the Yankees tonight. Garrett Cole, seven and three. 2 84 behind Snell. Defensively for the Rays of the left, It's Randy arose Arena in center Kevin here, Meyer in right, Manuel Margot left to right across the infield. Joey Wendell, William Thomas, Brandon allow. And G Man Choi and Mike Zunino is the catcher tonight for the Rays with as mentioned Blake Snell. On the mound Snail. The 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner this year, went for in two with a 3 20 for IRA during the regular season at a terrific outing against Toronto in the wild card. Siri's in game 15 and two thirds one hit, two walks, nine strikeouts, His curve and his slider were both electric and that's the thing about snail great fastball. He can really put you away with the other stuff. Yeah, I think it's really important for him to be able to spot that fastball early, just to get the hitters to respect that he's going to be able to throw it for a strike. In those different parts of the quadrant because we know he likes to throw the slider. He likes to throw that curve ball a lot. But if the Yankee hitters which are so good at game planning and coming in as a unit and saying, this is what we're gonna do this, we're not going to do if they decide. Hey, listen, that breaking ball starts in the zone don't swing because it's going to finish outside the zone and they really try to hold him up like that. It could be tougher snow. The Reyes took eight out of 10 games from the Yankees during the season now part of that time Was when the Yankees were really banged up weren't playing particularly well, but that is not to short change the Rays at all. Tampa Bay dealt with a slew of injuries over the season as well. David Rackley is the home plate umpire. CB Buckner At first the crew chief Mark Carlson is its second Todd Teachers a third, Marvin Hudson down the left field line and Mike Esterbrook. Down the right field line. It looks like a very nice day in San Diego. Snell is ready. Let Mayhew is in the box, and the first pitch of the ball game is a fastball in at the bell for a called Strike one. Mayhew judge and hits you in the second year of a two year deal for the Yankees. But what deciding that has turned into for them in a major league leading 3 60 for this year? Playing around in the opposite field as a swing and a miss there, but a good heart breaking ball. And it's so into Mayhew will put the bat on the ball as much as anybody and we'll go to the opposite field, singing as much as anybody right there got a little bit anxious for LeMay. You took that first pitch 97 up in a way and X pitch. He's swinging as the ball's coming out of snails, hand. This really uncharacteristic for D..

"They think about criteria and the on the ground realities for them. Cool well, do you have other categories such as four Mead or beer. Sarah good mentioned there is a beer category and I i. think that's a real fun group and it's it. Sure is different tasting experience necessarily than than the honey category but I I would. I would be really excited I sure enjoy meeting and there is a lot of production in California going on right now and I think. The trend is going up I think more folks are getting into it into it as time goes on and. A, really interesting question about whether or not. There would be a need category, but I sure would enjoy. Yeah. I was curious whether that would fall under like the beer and wine. Group or would that come in with the honey group and I said that historically you know as you can tell not even though he has seventeen categories, it doesn't cover all the amazing food being produced right now on all the creativity and traditional things like need being produced In each year we we aim to launch a new category or expand you know the subcategories of the category already have and need has come up several times I. Think it will be fun to see about how to do that We always wanted when we do expand to it in a really thoughtful way where the quality of judging can be just as high as always in. So we're mindful about. Taking on what we can really do well and growing at a pace like that. But sounds like it'd be ready to. Class earlier this year now, maybe last year with the University of California Davis, they have a AH pollination center and obviously a proud viticulture program as well, and so when you put agriculture viticulture together, you get some really excellent and well informed mead makers, and so the California's got some pride in its need and I'd say that I'm sure there are other parts of the country that could probably enjoy a competition say they liked it they'd like to put their me the balance and so how funny is welcoming it? Imagine you'd have much trouble finding judges I sign up your website will be in the show notes. So anybody our listeners want to get any additional information. Check, out the website and the show notes, and you can find out all about the good foods awards and the submission process although it sounds like we'll have missed the deadline for this year. I think that it's something that people can put on calendars and get ready for next year to. Keep up to date while Jeff I'm sure I'm sure that they can If we remind him, they'll put together a postcard for one of our shows. Next year. Great idea announces in times of great idea. Yes. So we do have the audio postcards. So next next spring, we can get you on and just do a quick announcement about the upcoming Awards and competition, and we'll make sure you get out there on a timely basis for our listeners that'd be, and then you can tell us who the winners were this year. Thank you. Anything else. Good for me I really had fun. It was a good experience talk about honey. Happy to do it anytime. You and me both Sarah, thank you very much mark. Thank you very much. I. I will watch for the results of your contest and I. Hope You do it Video this. January like an stay here once. Freaky so much for the. Great. Thanks. Thanks. Mark. Take care. told you it'd be a good discussion, Jeff I. I learned some things and and well, they're going into their eleven years. So they've been added a while and they they're getting it figured out I gotta believe it's tough finding judges for any and all of these things and then they take judges who don't know. Who Don't know about some of these foods and make them taste new foods. That's. The one thing I like about that is that. The. Judges go in with any preconceived notions. Is this good food? And that's you know. Either is or it isn't and and I think you get more balanced Get. A more balanced. Outcome from that..

"Hey, everybody. Thanks for joining us. Hey. Kim, we got a great show lined up for this episode. I'll tell you I think you're gonNA like this, talking to the people who are running the awards and The Lady who runs it Sarah, and the guy who runs the honey part of it because they have a honey section in there where they look at liquid honey and comb honey and creamed honey and and I'm waiting to hear I've been associated with them for several years. You know. On the BOSSIE. Developing policies for. How foods are made every every kind of food whether it's cakes or whatever has policies as sister is obtaining the Rian sustainable is it organic or is it and they're going to talk about that a little bit today? Well. That'd be a lot of fun. I know this is this is historically the competition time of year I think a lot of county fairs have been shut down and Steve Fares been shut down because of covid. So this be fun to hear about a different way of competing and people can possibly submit their honey. Yeah. From all over the US So yeah, there's a lot more detail here and one of the reasons I wanted to talk to these folks because I'm not clear on all the details and this will help them get the word out. Or good. Well, before we get to that interview, let's do WanNa mention the fourth international be in Hive Monitoring Conference. Coming up here in October with our friend of the podcast Dr Jerry Berman Shank in the University of Montana and they're going to do this virtually Yeah this year it's virtually it's the first first time they're doing it and because. Our friend Dacoven is, is here they're going to be doing on I believe they're chosen zoom and they have been evaluating. All these different types of high monitoring solutions that are out there and have been giving the the the makers of those, the the ability to display their solutions and given them during this conference a chance to talk about it. So they're talking about APPS and maps and standalone programs, scales and sensors for be driven. D Be Management Bee Hive centric sensor devices are rfid solutions for research infrared, research and applications hive monitoring asset security, and theft protection, which is big thing especially during the pollination season chemical and biological monitoring a bee colonies and even complementary technologies to the leverage be and high of monitoring networking tracking. So it's it's everything techy about be sensing. I wonder if he's got that dictionary figured out yet when bees talk to each other. That would be good. Maybe, he'll I'm sure he'll give be given an update on the be smart APP and when was that again it's going to be an October October and we will put the the link to the conference in the show notes and that'll have the exact date and.

Spectrum Mobile is now the fastest growing most of the story and the other parts of have made it one of those things that that will continue to evolve, and I'm sure very choosy. Here for the next couple of months. It was very powerful watching the broadcast last night because there was a feeling of pride and trying to get some normalcy back in our lives with all that we've been through the last few months with the fight for social justice and also clearly the pandemic that has slipped all of our lives upside down since the middle of March. When you were in that arena last night, broadcast the game in Reggie Miller. But what were you feeling? Well, I was I was feeling all of that, and you can't help but feel it because it's on player uniforms on the floor. And you know the story going into the game just how important this issue is for all of us, But for these athletes in this league, they have tried to be the very beginning of the conversation. And they have embraced that, and that has been one of the big stories coming down here and then the other part. Of course, there's no fans and trying to create for these players. A working environment playing environment that makes sense and the league have hit the right tone. I think all of these points so far, they've they really Taken suggestions. They have used technology. They have used social media they have questioned. They have tried to improve every night that we see a game nationally televised There has been another edition and something has come up in the game before the day or night before that, that they tried to implement so that it's an evolving story. That may not really have its form, You know, final form until we get deep in the playoffs, maybe to the MBA finals. But certainly there's a lot coming out of Orlando right now from the MBA, and I think everyone would universally like you just did say it's been very, very positive from the testing of the players. No virus infected players so far that it stayed in the bubble. That is the quarantine protocols, followed by media and players and management. Has been followed, and rules have been obeyed. Um it's been a very, very big success on every front so far. You're legendary broadcasters were talking to Kevin Harlan. But in these times, you know that really players and broadcasters control the energy without fans in there. Is there anything that you're doing differently right now, In your approaching calling these games, knowing how important it is to that that your microphone really means that in a game like this Well, they're two things. Exactly. That was my first game last night, So I'm just course the league open last night. So what? We have done a kind of a run through on Tuesday, but really didn't call the game for, say. Like we normally what? We just weren't just a technical check out. But there are two things that kind of stand out number one. I don't think I'll ever appreciate a crowd more the next time they're in the building. Because for a broadcaster, it's like an orchestra. And when you have a big play, you want that crescendo and that build up in that that emotion that a crowd gives a game in a play. To kind of fill in the back part of your coal. Um it's like an orchestra, and it's so important to to a broadcaster and the feel of how big a play and how important a play I was at that particular time. The other thing is we are well as broadcasters well off the court. We're up about 40 rose. It's very similar to a big high school gym. Or a small college gymnasium. And we're at the very top, and you don't have that personal feel of being courtside like we normally are. And when you aren't courtside You feel the rhythm and the tempo in the pace of the game, and it influences your call and and kind of lead you to where you may go with a call when you see something developed. All that Now it's pretty much gone because you're still far away. You're just trying to get the players right? And we're in a plexiglass cubicle, much like a hockey goal. Judge sits in In an arena were in that same kind of setting for protection. You know, big plexiglass sheets between me and my partner and me and the stats guy. So there's a lot that's different, ah, lot that we're adapting to, and we will and and really and and the greater scheme of things. These are minor issues, but for a broadcaster that you know it's a part of their candidate. Given take. They have individual with the broadcast that they kind of stand out. Talking to Kevin Harlan right now is on the call of the Lakers and Clippers game last night. Your biggest takeaway from the actual game last night was one. Well that the players are really into it. I mean, there are questions. They're playing hard. It's a short short course They're running here, Zach. You know, they know that it's not beginning in October, and they got month after month after month after trip after trip after game You know ahead of him. This is a very short track here. They've got eight games for seating. And then they've got you know the playoffs will start so is compared to October when they break training camp. And started season and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Here. They can touch the light. They can see the end. It's it's not that far away, and the consequences are enormous. So I really think that that these players get it there in the best physical shape they can possibly be in at this stage. It will only get better, but this is really like they've had a long way off in an off season. And they're starting the season, but they're not starting it when the regular season should start their kind of starting it. It almost seems like in the middle of preseason and the games count, So I'm going to get my pass here for the next Week or so as they get in game shape as they get a feel for a lot of teams of retooled and reconstituted their lineups and rosters. They brought in new players, and it's not a great deal. Familiarity. These new players are going to play a prominent role here on the stretch. So I wanna wait another couple of weeks before I judge. But if last night is any indication, and today is any indication, these players are engaged. They're focused there and they're all in. And I think it's going to make for a very exciting right. All throughout the year. The talk nationally has been bucks, Lakers and Clippers. When we get to the finish line this year. Is that still what you expect or in these times? Is it expect the unexpected. Well, here's the thing you know, this is a neutral floors. So there is no home court, and some teams thrive on their home for the 70 Sixers, for instance, that one of the best home records and pro basketball Get on the road. They struggled. Now Every team is unequal footing every quarters level, but the plane surfaces. Even there is no travel. You're in your same bed, same food, same same atmosphere. Same averaging, so it's a lot different than the regular season that were used to, so it's kind of like a laboratory. You know what you're doing is you're taking all these teams putting them on even playing surface. And they're saying go after it. So coaching is more focused player focus and player exertion is going to be heightened on the best team really is going to come out of this. I mean, I really believe that we have Cataclysmic injury on me or something that keeps one of the great super stars out of the out of the tournament that's coming up on the sideline and off before all things being equal. We're really going to see you know, a very laboratory like you know that the best the best will truly emerge. It won't be, you know, pushed or persuaded or seduced by a home court or by Long or bad travel schedule or or whatever, it's going to be in a laboratory setting, basically, even playing surface and and the best team will survive and win, and I think that's going to be really fascinating. I know you mentioned Philadelphia, Kevin Harlan, and you're right at home. They have two losses this year on the road. They've been a lottery, too. When you look at their record, I think to the more intriguing teams When you look east and West, it's Philadelphia and then it's Houston and they've been disappointing this year have been very disappointing..

Visit your tristate Audi dealer and learn more about the Audi Tron the only electric SUV built with Audis DNA while the key to this game is getting to Rick Marsala who's been very good against the Yankees. But look at those teams there was so many lefties on those teams that what he would do is throw that great pitch inside to the left. Ben back over the flight. He would get a lot of strikes strikeout to that way. It'd be interesting to see him going against this mostly right handed line of it's different for pitches. Now facing the New York Yankees. "Thankfully, it appears like major league baseball avoided a tragedy last night. The images coming from Houston. We're so distressing initially a child screaming and pain after being struck by a foul ball hurried out of the stadium to the hospital. With very little news immediately, Albert Amora who hit the ball in tears in the stands trying to find out the young girl status initial report signs reposited, another thing, an adult struck in Los Angeles, drew blood, but that fan was okay. The tragedies voided this time last year. Dr fans struck and killed her name was Linda goal, bloop. She was seventy nine celebrating her birthday and wedding anniversary at the game. This was not reported initially as cameras never captured it. Seeing last night play out. What does baseball need to do? Is it incumbent on them to extend the nets they've already extended rather stadium? Yes, extend the nets foldable do it now to counter arguments. One that will kids shouldn't be sitting there anyways, but as you just showed it's not just kids are getting hurt. It's adults as well. The second thing is people say, well interferes with the experience. But I believe that with baseball, and hockey fans will get used to it. I've been to baseball games in Korea and Japan where they go pulled a poll, you stop noticing it after a while. Beat. Right. I think they should extend the netting all the way to the foul poles. If you give anything you tell them, you got seats behind home plate. Nobody's gonna say, oh, I don't want to sit there there's a net there. I mean you don't notice it after a while. And with the game being what it is every pitcher throws practically a hundred miles an hour. These guys get around on the pitches to go down the lines. It's too dangerous Spain. I mean, if you watch the people behind own plate, flinching, and reacting, you can see when you're watching that they don't remember that the nets there, that's very clear. You get used to it the way that those fans do. And if you go pull the pull that's the only answer to this, because even if you're watching, and you're paying attention that fall is moving too fast for even a dull. And you saw Al more. They're the players shouldn't have to be in a position to do that as well. Run. Oh, it's a lame excuse to give this not sense about people doesn't wanna look through the nets as, as been put it out to suppose best seats in the house, people through the nets set up pyre, but underneath be looking through the nets and Fenway. You don't even think about it. It's the only thing they got to go to the foul pole tonight. Every ballpark, get the right. I know tonight. So, so we x hail today. We say we've avoided a tragedy when in reality to tragedy happened last year. And it was so underreported. We didn't know about it for months. OT L to the initial report that I read, but somehow baseball have they ever made a statement about the loss of life at the dodgers game last year? I mean, that's mind ball be that the season even began without that being addressed. And without the nets being extended. We'll move on. Buy or sell two royals White Sox last night. That was an eighty six mile an hour. Glenn sparkman hitting in the head get any Jek immediately. You can hear world announce Ryan fever say over and over eighty six mile pitch earlier the game ninety five our pitch up in on the Royal hunter dosier elicited no warning from higher Mark Carlson earlier this season. "We need him out there. We were flat from from start to finish two hour delay doesn't matter where we have to be ready to play. We weren't gonna show. We we started at eight forty five. I don't think our guys were ready to play. That's why. We've got to come out. We gotta come out tomorrow play. Well, it's troubling. Yeah. I'm out there doing everything I can to win a game. I need my guys behind me. And they weren't. Squirrel. We need him in right field. I don't care how bad he is need him in right field. I need him at the plate. And he wasn't there. And that's this is the twelfth objection of Bryce Harper's career that feels like a lot for a guy who's what twenty six he's been thrown out twelve times so far in his career. In it's in April. Like, should you have to get your bench fired up in April? That would be more concerning that he felt like, you know, hey, we were kind of flat. And I'm going to you know, I didn't like what does unpire was doing with his strike zone. He can't get thrown out of games this division rival with the Mets. You can't get thrown out of these games. And not at that point. It's a two one game there. Can you check have stats in check on the number of objections? Like great players. How often do they get thrown out a games? I'm curious that would Bryce Harper. But he didn't like Mark Carlson strike zone night. Have the computerized strikes on? I'm for it. I don't need to have my this unpire he likes the high strike, or he'll give you the edges or you know, if you're a hitter he's going to be it's going to squeeze you. If you're a future hall of fame pitcher, he's going to give you the benefit of that. I don't I don't need any of that. If you're going to do computerized strikes, and then you just have a, you know, I don't know if you have a sound effect, or whatever it is. And then nobody can argue that I saw pitches that were high in that game the strike zone was high. But e calls it for everybody. I'm okay with that that you know, everybody is getting called the same way. But if you have the ability to computerize the. Strike zone. And I go back to story. I saw on HBO Israel sport. And they did a computerized strike zone where you had somebody up above who would just signal down. That's the ball, and that's a strike and do it in real time. And you know, it didn't disrupt the flow the game. And they got the coals, right? These Pires who go up there. You know, they have an ego. They want to control the game. Now, I have a problem with that. Joe west has been doing this for decades umpires through history of been doing it. If you have the technology, then I don't have that with empires. They're gonna call fair and foul plays at the plate. But take away the balls and strikes, and I would be fine with that. If that's what basically it feels like that's where we're headed technology with five K the ability to be able to be precise with these strike zone. First of all we have to establish. What is the strike zone? Because remember when you were growing up it was like armpits to your knees that that's not the same strike zone. They have in major league baseball. It feels like it's from the top of the belt buckle to the bottom of the belt buckle like, you're going. You know, that's a really small window that you have to give throw a pitch in there and nothing has benefited the pitchers everything benefits. The hitters have an established strike zone. Make it a legitimate strike zone. And if you're going to have it computerized than do it, and then have the unpire there for fair and foul and catcher's interference. And some of those things hit by pitch and play at the play. I'm okay with that. We can discuss we'll take a break. It's coming up on twenty after the hour. News sports words in the Webster dictionary for this year. Paulie, you'll have the new editions coming up. Yes. Mclovin. I think I have a new hot draft term to usually paulie jumps on this early. "Coming to the end of the season. You would largely pick Milwaukee over Boston. The Boston seems to be getting together they swept out on the Pacers right now guys where we thought during the season maybe one accepting roles as well as they could have been based off. The last year when they had bigger roles when Hayward and Kyrie were out. Now, those two are back in the roles of kind of shifted back kind of they're kinda hitting their stride right now as we always say, it's not where you start at where you finish. And I think this series just got really really interesting if they can play nice with each other Boston during this series. That's going to be the key. If they hit adversity if they'd come out of the gate may stumble, and they lose Milwaukee looks the way they have the entire season. How does this Boston team respond when they're feeder held back to the flames getting three first round? Sweep is one thing going up against what's been the best team in Eastern Conference, and maybe all basketball in the second round and entirely different one. Listen, we talked about it with doors. The second match of personal Boston Milwaukee. Great because it was bitter last year. Milwaukee is better Foshan is getting to where they were a year ago. That's in the Eastern Conference and sorry LA and sorry Utah were expecting Golden State goose deck. Yeah. Which could be phenomenal. After what we saw last year. They went seven games in the Western Conference finals and in game seven the rockets and not have. Chris Paul will Chris Paul. We think at this point this point. You're right. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Meanwhile, Bryce Harper got ahead of himself last night outfielder charged out of the dugout after being ejected by unpire. Mark Carlson in the five one loss to the Mets Harper's thrown out after chirping from the bench three batters. After he struck out looking listen can't do you can't get thrown out.
