I love this guy because even though my affiliation was always saint john's i i love the big east dearly. I missed all the time. I was watching. Saint john's depaul the other day that in exactly Throw me but that seton hall run by our guest. Pj carlesimo is is one of the weirdest runs for me. Because there was never a time. I was a hall. Fan and hall was off the radar. Comparison to the janis. My johnny's georgetown. Who you know. I kinda loved in the tournament hated. When they played saint john's yukon that was a walkover until they weren't earl. Kelly was you know big part of that and calhoun Bc would always have dudes every now and then my family's attachment providence college but that seton hall run with mark bryant. Who every time. I see him at some function which is rare. Pj i'll be like you. But god i loved your game and then bryant looks to me like a fucking crazy person. I i just my father and i love talking about. We love talking andrew gaze. We hate those ramiro robinson free throws so how are you. I'm great man. thank you. I appreciate it Marxists three he's the red in the veins and he's still he knows your redman. I know not supposed to say that when we go to the old big east. We can use the old nicknames for saint johns and marquette wasn't any but they were. They were a different team. And now look when you. I'm sure money was a big part because you you've talked about this before when you are leaving seton hall and i think the thing that people can forget about coaches. You're all wired to figure out. Like can i d the best at this That's how you even made it to that point. But i assume it was. It was money book. Where the reservations about you going from college to the pros at age forty five right when you go to the portland job. Which is greenwich sounds. Good i guess exactly exactly It was crazy. It was a much harder decision. When we had the the the great run where the two years it started and we were lucky at you know after that we started getting good players. We had terry the hair and jerry walker knows guys. We would probably even better At ties but they never accomplished what the final fourteen did It was harder to leave to go to portland then. Decision when like kentucky game call and some of the opportunities that were there early because we just turned a corner in school had been loyal to us for a long time four years To have a winning record no finally got the nit marks junior year mark senior year. We you know. We got to the tournament for the first time in the school's history. I couldn't leave that later on. It was funny because mark was in portland And ramon almost was had gone there and of course. The accident wasn't wearing anymore. Bits poor louis different because most of the guys that had left college for the nba. At bad jobs they were expansion. Jobs judge you couldn't win coralline. We were it was an old team. I mean it was so clyde and balking and terry border and jerome and they were. They wanted to flip the team over which we did in three years. All those guys were gods but it was a place where you could go right away and win. It was a ton of money. I mean it was a lot more money while allen was the owner. I think as stupid as it was. I think riles was the only coach making more than me to first year. How crazy was that. And i thought i thought all the nba coaches would resent like. I didn't know the mind process. If the coaches in the league which is they want somebody to the next guy to get more more. Somebody else gets. The more they're going to get was almost kinda dave gavitt convincing the teams in the big east. Whatever was good for some other team in the league was ultimately good for you and it was the same process and I went. I love borland kazini association. I had already had with nike for a lotta years. So is the city. I really liked. It was an honour. Obviously who was great at the time. Everybody forgets brad. Greenberg was the acting. Gm in the interim because jeff. Petri refused to fire rick out of it so he last so they were kind of without a gm and all had in his mind. He wanted to college coach. I really think he wanted larry brown forget. We're wasn't the time. But i didn't want to go and as i think he had in his mind. I want to get a college coach. Read the nba's always rick. Was ron score. It was a players coach. Always kind of go out. Okay now we want to guide. It's more defense. Oriented is more art. Asked so i mean here. They always kind of flipped the other way. But i just felt if i was ever gonna go. That was the time. And i struggled with for a little bit and i said let me try it. I never even thought about it right. You and i've talked about this a lot. Maybe if i stayed at the hall and continued to have some success because we had really good players. I might get a sniff. Some time with the knicks the nets because i was a hometown guy but i i never even thought of or wanted to coach in the nba. I was real happy doing what i was doing but it was just an unbelievable opportunity and i took it in. I don't regret it. You know it's gone whole bunch of different ways But i've really enjoyed both who twenty three years In college in seventeen in the nba. So it's been you know. I'm i'm happy. It was a good run. Yeah there's no part of you. That i should think and i obviously in your voice to that usually go you know. I wonder if it when a different way i always think about. You know you. And i've talked about it. I didn't really want to be in the media. That's what happened. I i would much rather had put this much time into carrying about a sport that you are actually working in the sport and this may sound cheesy to people. But i think there's a real value in in a healthy part of your life. Where if you're actually rowing in the same direction as people and trying to fuck and win and you know like sometimes i'm like why do you watch this much. Like just just to have a good thursday podcast and it's it frustrates me when i know that there's just another level of understanding of the game that you guys have because you're all around the best minds as all you do. Yeah when it's the only thing you do. That's i so miss that. I certainly good news but every time i go to shoot around or practice or cover a game. You know you guys particularly if it's one where guys opened the door for you like a san antonio or somebody guys that have been an illegal on dime. Treat me differently. And i miss that. I miss the meetings. I miss exactly what you're talking about Once exalt where. You're getting ready to the next one in that journey. You have with your group. The players the coaches. The you know the front that group is thirty or forty people You can't duplicate bats. I missed out a lot but this is the next best thing for me. I don't. I didn't wanna do thirty minutes memory lane but i actually love the story so much so when you're it you're at fordham as an assistant you said. Your local guide is a good point. You brought up like if you just stated the hall and put together this ron. Although i think sometimes the college thing maybe the best version of coaching is the be connected to a college community college communities or the best when they're the right ones act to be Roy our to be dean or even bobby knight with the hoosiers run that there's something that's different than that then even any nba success. But did you. Did you ever think like at forty five. You make all this money with portland. And i've heard you tell the story. Like paul allergist was like. Hey here's the check and you're like i'm not an idiot outta here seton hall. Sorry but are you at that point. Just a great lake. You're at it manchester new hampshire college. You're you're kinda the halls and assistant for a long time. Where you kinda just happy to be around or did you know okay deep down like i'm not enough that i have to be in charge of my own ship here at some point I was lucky. I mean after the four years at fordham. I mean i. I got my. I went to manchester which went understood. Nice ceo's commercials for southern hampshire university man that that's new hampshire college of accounting and commerce. We used to call it knack. Act when i got there. I mean it was. Na is.

"A player, seven straight trips. To the MBA finals as a player, Phoenix nearly doubled its winning percentage this season. We're joined by James Jones, James. Nice to have you back. There's a lot that I want to talk to you about. But first, how are you doing? And how is life in the bubble right now? Well, thanks, Jim. Thanks for having me, man. Always great to talk to you. Life is good. You know, the N B. A is back in our guys playing. Our coaches are getting a chance to do what they love to do, which is coaching. And the players were able to channel their their their nervous energy you know, and towards the court, and you know, we had a game last night, guys play pretty well. So I'm in good spirits. When asked about that game in one minute, James, But for instance, how did you go about packing for the bubble? Did you bring anything special or unusual? How did you personally prepare for that? No, You just You just packed. You know you, You know you look at it. 5678 weeks. You tryto pack for two weekends increments. Just make sure you have enough for the laundry days. Whenever they do come. But we're spending so much time in the gym in, you know in the arena that he's going back and forth and workout gear. Talking to James Jones. All right, so money. Williams made the point after the game, quote the edge and the competitive nature. It was evident tonight is something that we have to hold on to end Quote. How pleased were you to see that edge and that competitive nature given the opportunity that you have in front of you now? Very pleased. That's part of our journey towards being competitive team is coming with that edge every single night. We have things that we're playing for allow those teams in Orlando. They're set. No, they're just they're just jockeying for position. We were fighting for an opportunity to make some noise. And so the culture that Monty said standards and expectations that he has for the team and expectations that they have themselves. They've been elevated, so it's good to see them come out last night and perform James Jones. My guess he is the GM of the Phoenix Suns. I'm going back to money in a minute, but you had mentioned I mentioned at the top you got the three rings is a player and you went to seven straight finals. So you have a ton of playoff experience when you've got a young growing team like yours. How viable is it to have a unique experience like this? We're playing playoff teams every night, and every game is pretty much a must win is invaluable. You learned you learned how to play playoff basketball by being in the playoffs or playing against playoff teams. And understanding the level of effort and the efficiency and just the approach necessary to beat those teams or so for us, This is an exercise in mental stability. And it's a heck of a challenge. And I know I know Monty's living forward. I know our players a little bored, and and I'm excited that we have this chance. You know, One of the highlights from the wind over Utah was you, Andrei ate and hitting that first career. Three people have a lot of fun with that. What did you make of that moment? It was good for him is good for the chain. If you're in practices, you see how much time you got put into their craft. You'll see these guys may make threes like DeAndre been able to shoot and make the three since the first day you stepped into our gym. But it's different in the game is different against envy a competition, so they see him get his 1st 1 So now that he can check that box. It was good. You know, it's easy to get caught up in that three. But he had a really nice rookie season last year, his numbers or even better this year. How much has he grown from the end of last season to where he is right now? Oh, it's it's been. It's been like If you watch him, you'll see he's a different player. And I think on the defensive end is where he made his biggest strides. He's always been a great officer rebounder. He's always had great touch in the paint. Nimble on it on its feet extremely quick in responsive but defensively, he's really locked in a credit to him and Mark Bryant. Those guys have been working on the basics and the fundamentals of being a good defender, team defender and it's showing it on both into the court. James Jones joining us I mentioned I want to go back to Monty Williams when you and I spoke last year. It was shortly after he had been hired and we talked about the relationship one year later. It's been quite a year in terms ofthe the growth of the team, but also the pandemic. How would you describe the chemistry? The two of you have I'm real and direct and well connected way. See the game very similarly. You can have success in this game. You can't have success in this business without being a consistent worker, and he's and he's brought that approach. And still that is a key pillar of our culture. Where our guys are consistently working on the right things, sharing the game, sharing the ball and bringing it every single day and respecting each other. Respecting Thegame and it translates. You'll see that we play efficiently. We share the ball. We moved the ball. We're team that's at the top of the league and assist and we also try to be a fishing by not turning it over. So the way Monty. He's the game that we asked you to see. The game is very similar son. Sham. James Jones, my guest. You know when you lay it out like that, you talk about the way the two of you see the game. It's pretty apparent, but it seems like from the outside, at least looking in the vision and values. The two of you share goes even beyond winning basketball games. The team recently did a really powerful episode of Don't sleep on basketball. There was about getting comfortable being uncomfortable and one of the things that you said in that episode quote is our place as.

Open here on this Saturday edition guys in reflecting especially over the past career looking forward in the next decade in the words of Shawn Michaels. I got two words for you Adam Cole. Baby the guys in the history of watching wrestling. I've watched I'm thirty four. I've watched him since I was around. Eight or nine I had. I had a I on Wednesday that I've never had happened before Mark Bryant. I've ever had this happened. Tell me when Adam Cole and Fan we're fighting and then came off that top rope and AH cold through that super kick for the first time ever I hadn't experienced I saw Shawn Michaels and Adam Cole's ring gear I it was the weirdest feeling I listen to the form. The extension the hair I just saw Shawn Michaels. It was the craziest thing. I've never felt anything like that before. They too have had such a parallel career. The only difference was that Adam Cole has more on the independence and shot Michael Moore. WBZ's the Markham throw it to you. He's on the verge of becoming what Shawn Michaels could be. Clearly take the mantle of showstopper icon. They can even be Mr Wrestlemainia part to again someday. I I get the feeling doing just like with DAX. Sean had to go away for an injury. I don't know what he would have done if he'd stayed. But what is that. A poll have to do to be that main event guy that undisputed air or not the entire world knows his name. And that's our world wants to see him in the last match Wrestlemainia will frankly. They've already done it when he comes out. And we're GONNA work on your map to Adam. Kobe Bay is three words but anyway yeah it was funny to me that you said that you saw Shawn Michaels in his gear because the whole is there like Dax all over again here do they don't have a woman that's you. You know an imposing presence and they don't stick the comedy they don't do a lot of you know in hunter and an X.. Pock were really silly really and it came across and people loved it and as much as you hated them you like them to. "Not only the president but the future and part of that means moving <music> buddy movie guys acquiring picks. We're trying to be better for the long term. Which is something. I credit derrick jeeter for. He has said they want whether it works goes but you gotta be. That's not mark bryant force job. He's job is to win games. They play on sundays. Tanking will is interesting and you kinda got to adhere because tanking is something that the the organization is doing but the team is not doing the teams actually doing the opposite of that because the organizations putting pieces out there that would lead to losses that would help you down the road but the players are not actively trying to lose the games. The coach is not trying to lose the game so they're almost going counter to what is the organization's trying to do by trying to win in and put the organization in a bad spot so as someone who's covered a lot of teams down here. There's two rebuilds going on right now. What are the locker rooms like where you have players that essentially the organization and the fans don't believe we're going to be good enough but they're doing everything they can to win jobs in the future and kind of ruined the plans of the organization mutation. That's the thing the players themselves they're not like. Sometimes you know react like all the players. We treat players like. They're not humid like oh. You'll see the cliche you say lines like oh. I don't pay attention to that stuff but when you talk to them you know either off the record behind the scenes. Whatever may be as social media. These guys obviously have friends. Limit asked him family members what the heck is going on. They all see here but the bottom line is this when you're on a football field or your you have is limited window especially football to make money nia. Play your dream job right. You can't worry about that stuff and you've got to put your best effort so these guys notice it. They're not numb to it. They're not blind to it but they also understand. They can't do anything about it. They got a job. I if somebody else lost her job at terrible but the job they have is to play well now. Are there rumblings. What's sort of doing sure. They're a human they. They figured they were wonder about that stuff but the bottom line is you six and ten or ten and six or two or fourteen or fourteen to you still have to play your best or you could lose your job at out of a job but these guys understand that so the locker rooms while there's talk of you know. This is going to turn the the when it gets down to it. You know you you may have a disgruntled guy or two but most guys just gonna play hard and not worry about that other stuff. We're talking the woman so at will manso on twitter sports director w. p. l. g. on local ten down here miami. He hosts the pre imposed for the miami heat on t._v. You know i mean it. Was i enter the year with the canes. Things really interested in and then you know everybody people. Everybody got mad. What happened with the gators back. "The OSU. Cowboys baseball team go through. And that's where the Cowboys are now getting ready for the start of their super-regional with big twelve oh, Texas Tech. That's a first the big twelve no two conference teams have ever played each other in a super regional until now to still be playing this time of year is what we all shoot for and didn't have to do a whole lot of watching film to get ready for the series having already played against these guys know them. Well and have great respect for him. So glad to be here for a great series. That's Cowboys coach Josh holiday says the overall conference, schedule, and especially that series with tech six weeks ago, which did not go well for the Cowboys help the team, focus, and get ready for the challenges to come the big twelve every weekend, the sheer did that for us in the trip out here was definitely one of those weekends where we came away from it with a good idea of things we could get better at a sense of urgency about making those adjustments. And then. Complement our players the way they handled it Cowboys lost. All three games that weekend in Lubbock, but holiday says it did help his guys get better just, you know another lesson in the season. And we played better, we grew from it. We've pitched awfully good. We've had great relief pitching in recent weeks. We've had some stretches on offense where we've been pretty pretty good. So just overall growing as a team game one of the super regional set for this afternoon at two o'clock then game two will be Saturday at five and necessary game three Sunday at five. You can see today's game on ESPN two games, two and three will be on ESPN you, and you can hear all three of them on our sister station ninety six one k x y with the hall of Famer Rex Holt and the chief, Matt Davis, the MLB draft was this week with the first round, remember having on Monday night, the same time the Cowboys were playing for a regional championship in Bridgetown OSU had eight players chosen but holidays says the timing of the draft needs to change, so but it's not happening at the same time that players who might be picked are actually playing in a game. I couldn't imagine Baker Mayfield going to the sideline Conti mountain the college football playoff and finally just got drafted horse Shuna three pointer in. Final four finding out. He just got drafted. That's essentially what was happening on Monday night in the first round. I think trying to time it to where kids are not in the field of play actually playing a game and looking in the stand to see if they got drafted would be a compromise. Other college coaches have similar concerns, so maybe something will be done about the issue as you star golfers. Matthew van Victor hobbling, announcing their turning pro will already signed an endorsement deal with taylormade and will play in next week's travelers championship my goals in the future. I guess in the far future to become the number one player in the world and be on the PGA tour. But for now, I'm kinda just on high still of winning national championship and appointed that we didn't get the team win. But you know, just celebrating with friends and family back home wrestling a little bit after a long season. Hublin is also expected to play in the travelers. OSU football player Trason Wallace. The twin brother of Cowboys star wide receiver Thailand Wallace is giving up put ball. He's had four knee surgeries. He's been in Stillwater and believe the game because of those health issues, former. Oh you quarterback Landry Jones getting tryout with his old coach. Bob stoops. Now the head coach of the Dallas entry in the XFL bringing Jones. And for the workout and the coaching staff seems to be on a diet keeps getting thinner. A third assistant on. "And then there was Ron broaden necks everybody Hawaii this evening. Tonight. Products was a bouncer at whiskey gogo a rock club on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, could obviously beating imposer he needed to. But he was definitely more the gentle giant sort of a staple here. If you will Ryan Cassidy helps promote bands at the club on Valentine's Day Cassidy was there. When the news came in Ron was shot to death outside his apartment in nearby Baldwin hills. He was fifty it was definitely a shock to to say, the least, you know, it it definitely just took us all by surprise less than a week later some of the clubs regular acts honored Ron with a night of music. Some of the lives lost a guns on Valentine's Day last year as Mark Bryant of the gun violence archive notes this plays out every single day. Whether there's a mass shooting or not we had two incidents that occurred four months apart Las Vegas and parkland, and I would have that good money that that would have moved the ball. And it hasn't since the beginning of this year alone at least three hundred thirty four children have been injured or killed by guns. Tomorrow on morning edition. We go to Yuma. Arizona huge groups of migrant families are crossing the desert to reach the US and ask for asylum. Advocates say the Trump administration has made it all but impossible to claim asylum at ports of entry. That's tomorrow morning. Ask your smart speaker plan PR or your station by name. You're listening to all things considered. It's K Q E news. I'm Tara Siler syphilis a dreaded sexually transmitted disease. That was all but eradicating two decades ago is back especially in California, and the SD is colliding with another public health epidemic the rising. Use of math is according to a new analysis released today by the centers for disease control and prevention health, correspondent April Dembosky reported on this issue today in April before we get into how these to public health issues are bumping up against each other. Remind us what syphilis is because I think younger people may have no knowledge of this disease and older people may have forgotten about it. Yes. Syphilis is an ST as you mentioned. And it was quite common back before the turn of the twentieth century. So in the very early stages. It usually starts as a sore ernal, sir at the site of infection, usually the genitals or the mouth, and then it can go away. And then the secondary symptoms are sort of systemic like flu like symptoms are rational over the body or especially the palms and the soles of the feet in its very advanced stages. It can create a neurological problems in the late nineteen twenty s when penicillin was discovered that was when rates of syphilis started to go down because it's it's treatable. So now, the CDC is reporting this increasing especially among methamphetamine users, and you've been reporting all week on this rise in Matthew's in San Francisco. What does the CDC saying about, you know, the increase in both of these public health issues? So the increase in syphilis has been going up for the last twenty years, and that sort of more broadly across the population, and one of the things that researchers started to suspect was a correlation between drug use. And so that was what they wanted to really kind of looking to with this study. And what they found was that. So traditionally the rise in syphilis has been seen among men who have sex with men and in the last five years, though, that's been shifting and they're starting to see it in a lot more heterosexuals so women and men who have sex with only women so among heterosexuals who have been diagnosed with syphilis in the recent five year period. The number of them using drugs has doubled. And why would there be this? This connection between these two public health issues. So methamphetamine in particular, it's a stimulant it really increases sex drive. It also increases. Sexually risky behaviors things like having multiple partners. Not using condoms consistently or perhaps trading sex for drugs or money or even housing food. And so when you have those risk factors that are associated with the drug use then your risk of contracting..

"Well, a lot of activities are focused around the park. It's not far from the school. This was a park that became a focus of the day of the of the shooting, of course, in in the months since after that one counseling was held here. But a very moving memorial has been set up here for the seven seventeen students in. Colts killed free to individual. There's this collage of photos and messages of encouragement loved that. We're sending in the months after this tragedy, but people from around the world, but a main focus here has really been on this idea of a day of service inside the community center here. There's been hundreds of people coming all day long. Many of them wearing those maroon MS strong shirts, they're working in shifts throughout the day pack, and food, and it's for a group that's sending these packages of food to hungry people around the world one of the people I've talked to is Mandy Sheridan. She was there with her nine year old daughter. Here's what she said as a parkland resident we're so fortunate to live in such an amazing community, and we all came together so much last year on this horrible day that we wanted to be thankful that is and show the world that we are still going strong. And you know, there've been activities going on all day long here. There's been yoga art activities. A drumming circle. There was an interface ceremony and not far away from here and nearby. In the meantime, of course, the shooting at Marjory stoneman Douglas led to a national movement right in a national discussion about gun violence. You get the sense that that continues after this first anniversary. I do I think people here are feel really energized by this by some of the activities going on here today. Many of those including those were part of the March for life student movement or pledging to continue their work at the commemoration here today activists were gathering signatures for a referendum that some people are circulating for a statewide ban. On a semiautomatic rifles like the one used in parkland. But you know, Florida lawmakers are taking other tack they're kind of considering a Bill that would allow teachers more teachers to carry guns in the classroom. So there's a real division here in Florida about what to do to make schools safer. That's NPR's Greg Allen in parkland, Florida, Greg, thanks. You're welcome.
