"If I got my bags back on the road I'm heading out there and I'm ready to go looking real good in my passport oh no amateur traveler episode 816 to the amateur traveler talks about castles and mountains, horses and mountain biking, a lead mine and a coal miner as we go to eastern Slovenia. But maybe not maybe not to the day welcome to the amateur traveler I'm your host Chris Christensen, let's talk about Slovenia. I'd like to welcome back to the show Mark baker from Mark picker Prague dot com, but Mark has not come to talk to us about product this time, but korosko, Slovenia, Mark. Welcome back to the show. Thank you. Thank you very much. And I say welcome back. Mark has been on the show a couple of times, at least, one talking about the Volga that I quite remember, and I don't know. I don't remember the other one either, but it might have been the Czech Republic. Could very well have been where Mark Lou. Yeah. But I remember the Volga river, how to cruise during Russia very well, actually, that was pretty good discussion. Excellent. And kurosky is not a place I know. I Slovenia Bantu, but where are we talking about? It's even slovenians might, and they would know it, of course, mozzarella, small country, and people, obviously, they know the geography. But it's not a place that even slovenians would necessarily go to. It's a very small province in the northern part of the country in the middle of the country right on the border with Austria. Excellent. And why should someone go to korosko? That's a really good question, but I'll tell you one reason that you should go. And that's to explore this lead mine that I went to in June, I had no idea that it was there. But it was an incredible experience. Interesting. We'll get more into that when we talk about the detailed itinerary, but what do it are you going to recommend for us? I recently was in Slovenia at the invitation of the Slovenian tourist board. They had me in there to tour around some of the lesser visited parts of Slovenia. Obviously, the country of Slovenia is well known for Lake bled for the Julian Alps for part of the coast along the Adriatic for the capital for the caves.

If you visit Lake natron you might think for a second that you would somehow accidentally made it to the surface of Mars. Because this Lake does not look like your typical Lake. During the dry season, Lake neutrons water is red. Bright, bright, red. In Lake natron is also next to an active volcano, and it's fed by an underground hot spring, which means that the Lake is filled with this molten mixture of minerals. Things like sodium carbonate or soda ash. And if you think back to your high school chemistry class, you know, things like acids and bases. Well, this Lake is very, very alkaline. Its PH level is similar to ammonias. So it can burn the skin and eyeballs of any animal that isn't adapted to it. And this is how the Lake gets its unusual color, too. From a floating algae called spirulina that blooms in Lake natron, potent briny, minerally grill. That's when you get this red Sheen on the Lake, which is sometimes a year incredibly spectacular. This is Mark baker. He's a conservationist in Tanzania, and he says, in your travels around Lake natron, you may also come across these skeletons that have washed up on shore. They are striking. The skeletons are covered with a chalky white substance. It almost looks like they've been turned into stone. There's always images of birds or animals being white and crystallized. That's not happening because they walk in there and it's like something out of the line and the witch in the wardrobe and they just sort of freeze in motion. That does not happen. Instead, the water serves very, very, very flat and it's like a mirror. And what happens is that a lot of different species of birds, including raptors, so Birds of Prey, fast flying swifts, will lose the horizon and they just hit the Lake speed one more thing. The waters of Lake natron can also get very hot. Your average hot tub is about a 100°. Lake natron gets to be about a 140°. So yeah, this bright red piping hot skin burning brine filled Lake. It can be pretty dangerous. For animals and for people to. But there is an animal that doesn't fear like natron. In fact, they thrive on it. The toughest roughest, most apocalypse ready creature on the planet. This is the moment you've been waiting for. Welcome to the stage. The flamingos. The sun comes up and you get this really beautiful light across this Lake and the flamingos have been flying with the rift valley as the backdrop. So it's just one of those spectacular scenes in nature that makes you stop and go, wow. Lake natron is a Paradise for flamingos. In fact, three quarters of all lesser flamingos on the planet nest there. And when we say lesser flamingos, it is not a judgment. Lesser flamingoes are just a species of flamingo found throughout Africa and India and lesser refers to their smaller size. But what they lack in size, they make up for in color and toughness. They are considerably smaller and pinker than the greater flamingo. Looking much more like the Caribbean flamingo, I believe you probably have in southern U.S.. Lovely, deep pink eye, very, very rare, the young are little and fluffy and gray and I'm trying not to put a cute voice on because that would just be inappropriate. They're brilliant pink color comes from the Lake too. These flamingos feed on spirulina. That same floating algae that gives the Lake its red color. But there's another reason why flamingos come to Lake natron delay their eggs. The fact that it is so harsh and so dangerous. Means that there aren't many predators around to threaten them when they nest. And that's good because their breeding cycle is complicated. During the dry season, at Lake natron, the waters recede, and it leaves the mud at the bottom exposed. And that's when the flamingos move in. They take the mud, and they shape it into mounds, or cones, just about a foot tall. And they is not really an easy thing to dig. I know because I've tried to dig it, I try to make a cone with my hands. And it's really not an easy thing to do. It was hot, gooey, thick, highly gross mud. They make these mud cones, and they lay their eggs on top. And in about 30 days, these young little fluffy gray things pop out of this egg and they sit on the top of this mud cone. They can't go down onto the mud because they would die it's too hot. Just this little rise is enough to create a difference in temperature. Then, when the baby flamingos are finally old enough, they make a beeline for the freshwater wetlands along the Lake's edge. So they form these crashes, these big groups of hundreds and hundreds of little gray flamingos, and then they go for it to the edge to get fresh water because they have to wash this soda off their feathers. In other words, if you are a flamingo, Lake natron has it all. You got a safe place to lay your eggs since predators can't handle the Lake's toxic waters. There's lots of mud. There's freshwater access. There is spirulina. It turns you bright and beautiful pink. There are just not many spots on earth that can tick all of those boxes. There's still a lot of things that can go wrong here. If the ground is too dry, the flamingos can't build their mud nests. If the water levels rise too high, the chicks can drown. So not every breeding cycle is successful. But every 7 years or so, they hit the jackpot. At times like these, Mark estimates that they can increase their population by about a third. And luckily, while the flamingos can live for 50 years, so they have a lot.

Upa does for generalization shooting a lot and you go the okay dot org. You look at the which there's a lot of not available stuff knowing the first thing that we do from a foundation perspective is we make safety free A bunch of donors starting in the nineteen sixties said aviation. Safety should be free. Safety is one of those things that we want to share. And that's why the reason. We're celebrating the best results in over generalization in coming out of more activity but the other thing that i think. A lot of people were surprised by the size of our foundation. Foundation is a piece where all this donor money that comes into. Asia really grow the next generation every better safety but we started a sinkhole. You can fly about seven years ago and you can find has four aspects of it. One of them is high school education. For which i like titled about rusty pilots getting him back into asian so for over ten thousand folks come back deviations or rusty pilot program brandon. Flying comes over seven hundred five clubs binder on the website so people can come community fun and do that really working hard more recently on. How do you make sure that the success in jay and getting your pilot's license is more accessible going through a lot of instructors typically today and have have an app today that you can join his young pilot and make sure get good communication with your your plan stricker's log replay instructors out. There was a lot of new flight. Instructors out there learn how to do their job as well. We won't help. Both sides be successful. And that's kind of what i think. Most people surprised about is the depth of epa foundation..

Making sure we can do things in aviation which has given us to become the safest year ever and generalization was the last twelve month's with more flying out by way so into things like that and then ultimately the freedom to fly is reflected in some of the cost of we try and manage and help create value aviation where we can sensitive lives. "Thanks so much for joining us. I'm jennifer non in. This is a pilot briefing for the week of august sixteenth. Twenty twenty one bringing you the top five things. You need to know generally aviation news this week. This is ao pa's pilot briefing your general aviation news update brought to you by the aircraft owners and pilots association l. p. president mark baker is calling on ao pa members to contact their representatives in congress and urge them to support the certainty for general aviation pilots. Act of twenty twenty one which clarifies that giving or receiving flight training is not considered carrying a passenger for compensation or higher july twelfth fa directive reverse course on sixty years of precedent that had allowed flight training and experimental limited and primary category aircraft in other words aircraft with special airworthiness certificates without needing a letter of deviation authority or an exemption. The directive came after a non-binding court decision in a case involving a florida company operating limited category warbirds. Wildfires have burned more than two point three million acres in more than fifteen states across the country as of august ninth. According to the national interagency fire center oregon has sixteen large active fires burning more than five hundred eighty thousand acres and one official is encouraging pilots. Who fly in the state to report any fires. They see from the air. A colonel with the benton county oregon sheriff's office air search and rescue department is requesting that pilots who are flying in the state. Look for and report fire starts. Pilots can look for fire starts during takeoff on route and during landing and report the location of fires to air traffic control. The aircraft electronics association reported seven point one percent decline in avionics sales for the first half of twenty twenty one despite a slight increase in april may and june compared to the first quarter of twenty twenty. The half year tally for twenty twenty. One remained north of one billion worldwide. Despite the seven point one percent decline in total sales for the one point one five billion recorded for the first six months of twenty twenty though the association noted that second quarter sales increased two point one percent compared to the same quarter in twenty twenty while aerial performers wowed crowds and inspired future pilots at e as air venture and oshkosh wisconsin government affairs. Team took the opportunity of aviation's largest gathering to advance some of our top advocacy priorities including helping an act. Steffi's project reform the designated pilot examiner management system. Some tangible progress to boost system efficiency may soon become evident online. And a timeline is coming together for several system-wide overhauls recommended the faa by an industry working group. In june the canadian border reopening vaccinated travelers. Might be news. Generally aviation pilots have been eager to hear but there are some hurdles to be aware of before crossing the border as of august ninth fully vaccinated. Us citizens and permanent residents are permitted to enter canada for non essential travel for the first time since the corona virus pandemic prompted the border closure in march of twenty twenty and while the announcement is positive news for most travellers..

"Well it's kind of hard to believe but rarely that's what get a biennial flight review in your harvey seven from your buddy. Who's a cfi. Good luck even if your friend were to provide the instruction for free. They couldn't do it without first. Getting a letter of deviation authority or lotta from the faa without which the flight pedro unpaid would be in violation of the far's at least that's the faa's current take on flight training in certain categories of aircraft facing the ire of member organizations industry-wide. The faa is defending. Its about face on. Its interpretation of flight instruction unlimited primary and experimental category aircraft. They've declared that. Instructors who volunteered offer instruction in these aircraft are by definition earning compensation knowing that the opinion flips the meaning of volunteer on its head. The agency says that volunteer instructors are being compensated by expected work or payments in other forms or and this is the kicker by the goodwill they will build with the people instructing for free news of faa's semantic contortion was shared by ao pa which had vehemently protested the agency's flipflop on the nature of cfi's roles in providing training these aircraft this follow ruling earlier this year by a federal judge that instructors were offering commercial services in the airplane in essence acting as the operator of an aircraft that the faa has for many decades viewed as being operated by the owner or controlling entity the aircraft further adding to the overreaches. The faa's claim that compensation occurs even when a third party benefits in an article detailing the continued revelation of the faa's about-face on training. A opa's general counsel justin harrison wrote last week faa prosecutors quoted an advisory circular a sixty one dash one forty two to finding compensation as the receipt of anything of value that is contingent on the pilot operating the aircraft. It does not require a prophet profit motive or actual payment of funds accumulation of flight time and goodwill in the form of future economic benefits can be considered compensation. Furthermore the pilot does not have to be the party. Receiving the compensation compensation occurs even if a third party receives a benefit as a result of the flight. "To work we go. Let's go Toe Andrew in South Lake. Good afternoon. Hey, thanks for taking my call it my daughter Recently total her robbed 4 2018 bottles. Okay, okay. She's great, so we're all fine there. Okay? We're just feeling with little stuff the insurance companies offering. I'm just trying to get My head around the the offer that they're making us if it's within range of what you think is appropriate depreciation on the vehicle. Okay? So basically We paid 24 for it. It was paid off and they're offering us 18 on the buyout. So we're losing about $3000 a year and depreciation. Okay, hold on. Hold on. Hold on, because this is simple. Who's the insurance carrier? Uh, I go. You can't trust Gecko's. No, That's a joke. That's a joke. All you have to do is ask you just to see the certified collateral list. Because what they do certified collaterals been around forever. In fact, good friend. My Mark Baker used to work for him, and every month they go out to used car lots around the world classified ads, and they put millions of used cars into their computer. Not with what they're asking for the car. But like they used to come survey all the dealers in Dallas Fort Worth, and they'd say, What would you really sell that car for? And we'd help him fill it out. So they have a list of 2018 raft Fours different mile age, and they said that you can replace that car for 18,000. So you can ask them for the list and say, Where is that car available In doing so You may have had lower mileage than they're offering you and you can bump it a little bit or maybe a different option package on it, And you can bump it. But insurance adjusters don't go looking black book or then a d a used car guys and come up with a figure they get the numbers from certified collateral. And those air real cars that are available for sale right now. Okay, so asking for the list, and then you'll say, Hey, they were right or they were off a couple 100 bucks. Whatever the case may be Okay, That makes sense. One little side note. I have a pro master for work. Yeah, I often to people of moved to the other side of the street rather than walk by my side door. You're talking about the idea, Chairman. Oh, yeah, Well, there. Yeah, again. I just I just You watch that stuff when you go Well, I think everybody in America has been killed or killed somebody, according to that channel. But I'm Jake. You just sit there and you watch it. And when it's done, I'm that guy that says they didn't tell us the whole story. There's something wrong with the story the way they told it, right? S so I find it. It's irritating more off than nothing. You go. What I always do is to go back and find all the original reporting on it. See folks I don't have a life when I'm not doing the radio show, but I do this on everything and you go look it up in to go. Really? This was kind of like the key fact they left out of this case. You know, And you just go ahead. The last we're, uh I believe I already know that could you repeat where you would send somebody by another red for he go over and see B J overtreatment. That's that's easy. It's just down the road from you. Yeah, well, that is where we've been buying with. Picked up a couple there. Did you do business with B? J when you were there? I have to ask my wife. She's one Does it? Yeah, because I'd be amazed if you haven't He gets involved on and that's what amazes me. He gets involved in every deal. He's just great. So that's why I go with Thank you very much. I'm glad your daughter's OK. The car could be replaced. Exactly true that was ruled out today. It happened. So that's not even on her mind. But you're exactly right. There you go. Have a good weekend. You too. Thanks. Open lines, open lines and I'd like Karen to earn her paycheck before we leave today. 8887875543.

"Nick Chubb. He's always out there working. He gave you 100 and eight yards and a touchdown and the Browns again. Listen, they staved off the covert outbreak at their team headquarters. To end this long drought. You gotta shout out all the great Cleveland voices out there. How about twin Keiper and anybody else you know from Cleveland? It's just a feel good story for anybody who's a longtime NFL fan. With awareness. You feel good. The Browns are finally back and who's their playoff draw? Gonna be? The same team into Steelers. It's gonna be Sunday night in the Steel city should be a lot of fun. But for right now we rally around the hum baby Cleveland Browns. Mayfield takes the snap. He's gonna run it to the right. Mayfield turns the corner head got the first down on the right side. He slides inside the 40 yard live, make it Fitzpatrick tags and down first down Brown's at the 39 Yard line of pitch. My clock is running with 52 seconds left to go get the first down. "So maybe that answers your question right there. It kind of gives you a answer being no. It gives you a really nice floor. But where the yards fifty to sixty two yards and three straight games despite getting eight to ten targets. In all of them and higgins is actually out yarded him in three straight games. So ben landry versus higgins music. Is it even a debate. I in it's it's landry from. Npr i sure higgins has more yardage upside. They both have just as good of a shot at scoring touchdown. So i like landry. Landry right now is the classic landry. The classic julian edelman. Where you're gonna get your floor. Sixty eight catches potentially. And maybe scores a touchdown but heavily involved in. Probably not going to get you over one hundred yards. But i prefer landry to higgins. Frankly he should not have scored a touchdown. Yesterday it was a great play by him. Great by bay. Mark baker mayfield. But i don't know if you guys remember. David joke who was wide open literally steps in front of jarvis landry and he threw the contested. The jarvis landry instead it was. I didn't notice it. I i was. This was the one sunday night game all year. Believe it or not that. I did not. Dvr and watch later. I watched it while we were doing this. Show and i was like now. I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna go back and watch it further in depths not gonna do that to myself but now that's interesting 'cause that would have been to open. That would have been too tight end touchdowns for cleveland. 'cause hooper got in the end zone to and hooper is going to be. I think a very popular pick up on the waiver wire because he he's scored a touchdown which is great but more more great is the jets matchup. And i don't know that we have anything happened there if a blackout or sharing my screen with you to show you the. Oh let me say touchdown but to move on. Okay so the giants stunk. It was pretty predictable. And i think it's obvious you can't trust any other sketches. I know slayton had for seventy four yards. But nobody started him. Twelve percent started. You can't start their pass. Catchers unless you know daniel jones is healthy and maybe look at shepherding ingram but gall man all right here we go. We're taking a look. At the touchdown here mayfield is in the shotgun. Formation sends a man in motion rolls out. And there's nobody within ten yards of david and he's in front of jarvis. Landry it was. It was a very funny play. I mean jarvis. Landry got the touchdown. We're all happy about that. Because hopefully nobody started david..
