When Did Marriage Become so Hard?

"To understand marriage. Today we thought it best to go back to a time and place when marriage was very different. Well i've been studying the history of family for many many years. But i specifically got interested in marriage as we got into these debates. About what traditional marriage was that. Stephanie coons. She's a professor at the evergreen state college and the author of the book marriage a history. Stephanie says the earliest marriages had nothing to do with the feelings of two people or their attraction to one. Another as you probably know marriage was much more about economics and acquiring powerful inlaws marriage originally arose in more egalitarian ban level societies as a way of sharing resources and establishing a peaceful relations with groups. That you might otherwise only see occasionally and you might not know if they were going to be friends or enemies It was a way of circulating obligations and goods. Mary my child off to you and that means you owe me things. But i also you things. Stephanie brought up a famous example from history. The union between cleopatra of egypt and mark antony of rome elizabeth taylor as cleopatra siren of the niles this is from a nineteen sixty three film version. Richard burton as mark antony impetuous leader once in pinson legion dreaded adversary on the field of battle. The hollywood version of the story portrays cleopatra and antony as being very much in love but stephanie paints a slightly different picture. I think the theme song for that Relationship could have been what's love got to do with it. They may have been passionate but it was more passion for power than a sexual. Although sexual probably entered into it to cleopatra and antony marriage was primarily about strategy wrong egypt with the two most powerful empires in the world so getting them anybody who got them together and the gotten alliance between them would be unstoppable.

Shame and Guilt in the Artist

"Now. I know this might sound a little interesting Shame and guilt in the oddest because there is such a wide array of opinion about these subjects in in the arts. You have a group of people that literally believe that because we are human and because we are communicating to humans through arts that we should try to use whenever possible. Shame and guilt and in all the other things that are inside us. But we're just talking about shame and guilt and this show and use it on a regular basis and in fact Use it all the time practically and then of course you have another group that say You know issue used sparingly or. Should this be used strategically. You know where we're has them real relevancy so that you can still remain an artist or you can still have something that's artistic and not just a rant or rave or you know a complaint or something like that and then of course you still have another group top of that that believe that somehow in some way we should try to put together things arts whether it's nonfiction frictional. Whatever doubt don't really have a lotta bearing in our lives or maybe even a lot of bearing in people's lives in general they just stories period. You know or like a science fiction writer. I know tells me all the time mark now this is real so i mean i don't need to be gene roddenberry and try to lose every single thing that's happening on earth in order to make my science fiction relevant. He makes he makes fun of the word relevant a lot. I mean he has a point. i don't wanna go as far as he he's gone to where You know he can't do anything. It is writing ille- resembles anything that happens on. Earth happens with human beings because everybody any anyway marked. So what's the big deal

Constructing Lighter Topics With Relevancy in Mind

"Vote him. Welcome back their strength to be human. I'm your host odin. Playwright mark antony. This is episode two hundred and seven construct and lighter topics were relatively in mind. I know sometimes they get long these titles and that one actually sounds more clinical than usual. But hey there's a real point forward and on new enjoy really talking about this. Now there's gonna be a gore sections of this show and then in of course introduction. So it's almost like five sections is definitely going to be a little longer than the we normally go but there's a lot to cover in wantagh carbohydrate well op spoken about this sort of thing before an other shows but never an entire show about it. It's one of those shows when we were doing like multiple subjects. So i never really covered everything. I wanted to talk about all right. So what's the introduction. Here is simple. I'm talking about lighter. Topics like when people write about nature or animals or rather getting sick or you know their family having fun or hell even got a poem of somebody's family had a fight and in that poem. They threw the fight. They learn more about themselves. Which sounds wonderful poetic with really show. How realistic that is. But hey that's not puerto writing you. Can you can do what you want. But what i've found throughout the years. And i it's part of the humid conditions so does not want individuals are at fault for this it. It's pretty common. And it's unfortunate that folks when they write what they call the positive on the lighter side or inspirational to so many different ways to describe it. They don't take it serious. In many instances it's even written poorly yet. When you have folks that right things that a that a deeply dark even disturbing certainly dramatic. Why do they suddenly have such keen focus. Why does the work compel you. Why does it bring you in. Why does it hit you over the head. Why does it leap off the page. These all the things i expect to do. In general

"Folks who welcome back chanted b. I'm your host. Mark antony wasi poet and playwright host of this show. We're looking at episode. One hundred and seventy one. This'll be the second part in our series of journal. House called rating as passion. And if you call from the first installment which was writing his priority it was really more about. The daily routines are necessary for someone who really makes writing as a priority how to make it a priority so that you can be a productive writer and this particular case really going to be looking at artists that used wedding as a passion because they had a we would call. The singular pursuit oftentimes artists. That got a got out. One major project that really defined everything you know in music they call them the one hit wonders. You know we had to get that one song no matter what you do. That's all people. Remember the judge you by There's certain actors that they do the same thing they get typecast you know and then you try to do something else. Heartbreak when many instances for writing that some of these people right here now it would be wrong to call this some kind of a loose of famous authors. Who only did one novel. Because it's really not that. At all and many cases they have done other things but they simply paled in comparison to the major work that they did i saw. I'm going to mention a few dead that had had died only because of what they did was a singular passion for them and we don't really know if they were going to go on to do other things we've been something bigger because some of them died so it some of them will fit as definition but they all had that single passion about what they were doing just not all of them live long enough to to enjoy it or to see it really come out in any kind of major fashion. Okay i'm not really gonna stick to the dates all that much because they really not necessary to demonstrate these points. Okay i one is a british writer by the name. Anna sewell now. She's very interesting in the sense that he is a writer. That didn't start off writing..

That doesn't seem to ever end. And this is going to be a less severe of mellberg series a big six. The world's speaks in this one. We actually have more international email writers than we've ever had before gaining more of an international audience. So i'm certainly appreciative There's a lot interesting comments over here. So let's get right to it okay. I mentioned this before anybody else knew that. Might be catching this episode The two things that we try to do the situation is Do our best to to if not read the email directly at least paraphrase it not. Everybody gets writing from us english as their first language so we tried to help with that. The best we can also maintains people right just quickly maybe even a motionless after listening to a show and oftentimes they don't even mention would show the referring to so Sometimes we know from the from the email it'll mentioned it inside the email and other time to it or in some instances simply won't it all we just sort of have to guess From what had saint side gently able to make a a pairing at all time. I think in this case we're we're able to do so but You can certainly judge from yourself but we we try to do the best we can right. I've noticed recently we've had a lot more of listeners using the platform stitcher which is one of the ones that earliest ones used. But it's only been lately that seem more and more people use us. I want to thank you very much. Stitcher listen don't forget eh one of the few platforms on the incident. We actually leave comments and feedback about show so you to do that. It's always great to listen. Of course you can always email me direct leave. You have any other questions or concerns. Whatever right right. Let's go onto this first. One here would be the classic spotlight series show. We did on what serlin was very interesting Got some really interesting comments okay. I learned a lot through the show and have a deeper appreciation of its writer rod. Serling so thank you very much for that..

"Hi folks and welcome back to this. Llosa open playwright mark antony rossy going to be episode hundred sixty six the mirror and the window a discussion on self to do this while say that but it sure I wanted to talk about self a great deal because it's an area for a lot of artists that they seem to Follow stray of Late because it's a difficult thing to bounce a folks don't know or don't realize maybe because what they're told tradition a what they're told through the culture or possibly even the religion. You know that there are there are certain boundaries. Old navy the honest certain Certain cases as artists artists always different type of people. That folks always failed to understand. I don't think Oftentimes throughout history. Maybe even say whereas the lights up Trusted in not trusted it. Mainly because we tend to be the mavericks we tend to be the free thinkers attended you. But you're not going to be able to control. That's why we'll artists ever interested in being controlled then wouldn't be politicians. Oh follows the of your religion or your coulter. Maybe even your culture. But we're not we're artists and i'm gonna have the dividing up the show the three sections so i wanna be called solitude. It'd be about selfishness. And then the next one will be attitude that will be about narcissism polluted not as the difference and then the third won't be about platitude trying to find a balance between the selfishness and and normality as much as that's possible for an artist all right out it's going to be a lot of quotes in the show. The help illustrate certain things for many orders around the world so it's important for us to try to cling non so what we could find so beautiful trout selves not everything that the artists say is some absolute truths. You're not gonna find that a lot of absolutes on on on the show like about self. I mean we're going to get closer to some answers but ultimately the truth that you might find from this show is the decisions that you've made yourself on what you want to do to be as an artist that's going to be your truth won't be the same for everyone because we all have different boundaries possibly if a different goals of course we're different people trying to say different things start offer some some quotes that i find interesting about our in general and they contain some of the things. We want to talk about on this show. Okay i one. If only people knew hor art work to gain my mastery a wouldn't seem so wonderful at all. I was from michaelangelo so an unusual thing from somebody that was a master. But you know like anything else You know he spent an enormous amount of work. I'm not sure if aware. But he spent. I think six years on his back.

"Hi Folks Welcome back to be human dishes, your host, Mark Antony Wasiyu poet and playwright seething. We're going to go with episode one, hundred and fifty eight. Possible futures of writing. Now I know how to episode about a year ago that touched upon this as well. But I wanted to go a little bit further plus a lot of people that asked about it as well. So I appreciate that. Now. I hear a lot of. Moaning and groaning from from riders privately that. You know they don't know where the whole electronic eight is gonNA take writing. They're wondering if it's just GONNA BE A. Fad so to speak well I'll tell you right now is not fad. Okay. Whether you want to get involved in not and maybe just go more fashioned way like a print and go and go that route especially with the realities of. The expense involved the amount of work involved the fact that. Publishing. Houses print less and less each year that most of the major ones have consolidated and they pretty much have turned their back on literature for the most part. If you're not a celebrity or putting out a cookbook or some scandalous thing about this guy or that guy I mean right now you could probably put out a book about. aliens have kidnapped trump's brain. You're probably get that published before anything else. Worthwhile. That's really what we've gotten today. But. You don't want to go that route and you can. You can recognize what I've seen for for decades now is that The electric means is a viable way to get the message out about our writing I mean in so many instances now. where able to use email to carry forth, I'll poems and essays and plays even screenplays way you're used to have to use the regular mail before. has now cheaper and faster to do that and easier than ever before. That's also a real big part of the whole revolution of writing I. Think..

"Hello and welcome to the strength to be human podcast with your host poet and playwright Mark Antony Rossi. In this our second year, we continue to explore the meaning of being an artist in an ever changing digital world. Now, without further ADO, here's your host. ooh. Hi Folks and welcome back to shrink to human I'm your host, Mark Antony, Rossi poet, and playwright. Hosts of this show. Now. We'll be something entirely different on this show that we've done before. Right? This is GonNa be episode one, hundred and fifty four. To creation, of concrete, minimalism. Now what's very different about his is a couple things. First of all, we're going to talk about something that I pretty much innovated, which is a different type of a version of of micro writing It could be a part of flash fiction, which is what I use it mostly four over the last couple of decades, and then sometimes in in in some of the the nonfiction essays or the we deliberately works. So. Well. Well, what I'll do here is. A little introduction. We'll. We'll talk about how I come about how to do something like this, and then we'll do various readings Kinda give you examples some of the flash fiction and some of the of the non flash fictions of using this different form. All, right we'll start with the introduction. It's pretty much of an introduction to innovation, and then we'll go on the the various. Pieces themselves on the D. sites description. When you look at your link on listening to the show, you'll actually be able to see these these paragraphs from these things that I've taken from that I'm reading to you on the show you'll be able to see them on the description as well as the De Link to where you can actually go to the work that's been published on you know. Somewhere, in some journal on the Internet, and you can read the whole thing if you want and kind of get the whole effect, but I didn't Wanna read every one of these pieces and you know be here for two hours or something I just wanted to have a good show about this something to do for quite some time. This is the best way I think about oncoming about it. Okay now. To open this up, understand this, right. I've gone over many different angles and topics about now only how the be Ryder but the things inside of you, you know what you do about fear and doubt how to handle rejection and acceptance in many instances your identity. What you had to do to overcome this, what you can do to overcome that. So this way you can start managing your own personality and therefore managing your work and going forward. Kinda give. If not a step by step alise enough enough I. Guess You could say building blocks to get where you need to go I mean we're all gonna filling our own stuff. So it's never going to be you know some perfect example everything but these are the things that I did the things I've noticed seasonings I come up with over the years, and that's what I do on the show that try to share those with you. Okay. Now In this particular instance and I want you to understand this..

"Hello and welcome to the strength to be human podcast with your host poet and playwright. Mark Antony Rossi. In this our second year, we continue to explore the meaning of being an artist in an ever changing digital world. Now without further ADO, here's your host. I folks and welcome back to be human. We all also mark say Rossi. Poet playwright and host of this show my voice is in the best today. So please forgive me for that. Avalon does belts and May I got schedule US WANNA to move forward. So the best we can with this, this is GonNa be episode one, hundred and fifty. Certainly the milestone at one hundred and fifty episodes. So I couldn't be more prouder event and thank you all for your support. was they has to fall on a day where I don't have the best voice you're GonNa do. That's life. Now, there's going to be cold keeping the journal and Jiving a memory. As is I get ideas from people that that call in or? Write me or text me or sometimes of the chat with somebody an idea comes about to do a show on that. I think that's what this one came about this. It. Out. Many of us do some for Journal and we just don't call attack and we'll discuss that to see you know if you might fall in that category, maybe something will join with the rest of the doing because I do a lot of no take. So it's not that unusual it says that. There is a more formal version of this and we'll talk about that as well. Someone who kind of put together the show three different sections will. Will do the informal more about not taking, and then he'll be formal section, which is in actual journal, which is really more like an extended diary all like even almost. So against electoral diary. None of the last sexual be more notes. On notes. Okay Right. Now of always I've always liked the topic I've always liked the practice mainly because Camin. Notes really key. For me to remain on top of what I do. And also the remained diplomatic because I can't without notes. Doesn't even matter of older Earth's when I sold it when I was younger I always been a fond of notes of always taking a Mrs that they transformed..

"Now, your host Mark Antony lassie poet and playwright. Is going to be episode one, hundred and thirty seven, and we're going to be calling the agents in the writing process. So yes, we're going to actually have a show about agents, the various difference writing phases out there or riding genres writing happy sewing WanNa call those is going to be various ones. In this particular show, we're going talk about the regular regular books while talk about. We'll talk about screenplays and we're going to definitely talk about. Even work. Sometimes, ages can be valuable in these things and sometimes not. So global of that, and you'll be able to see how this whole all this works out. Hopefully, this'll be helpful. Folks have had some questions over the course of time I've used them in the past I have some experience on a number of these levels not so much anymore. I don't really. Have a big need them anymore although occasionally on the screen I angle I do but everything else I don't really have a need for the but they're still they're still necessary out there and if you're interested, you have every right to explore that. Now with that said, there's a couple of things like you to put in context right away I think is this. Even. Though I have expanded on a lot of these angles and allow these areas it doesn't mean that what I'm saying is the only way for you to go. Okay I'm giving you options I'm giving you facts. That fact versus what's my opinion or what's an option, and that's what I'm GonNa do on the show. Okay. It doesn't mean that it's the Bible, all things regarding agents there's still lots of things that could be up in the air. So lots of great on some things thumpings are real concrete and we'll talk about those. Okay. All right. Let's start here. Now those of you like my south who poets while it's very rare to actually get any kind of agent involved in poetry. Even if you have a big name poetry is still because oftentimes the presses themselves, we'll take care of you you can talk to them directly. So it's not that unusual to do that and I am sorry to say that the old joke is. If you're a couldn't afford agents and why pay them when you could just go directly to the public that's what happened. You lose. You lose money doing that and many ways you're not looking at making a big advance as is these days so you have to consider that. So it's still extremely rare. It's not very common in fact if you have A. Look through agent guides and we'll talk about it like riders markets. You know the books you can buy at the bookstore that they're hardcover nate they often will wanNA publishes that have went up by agents, very valuable resources. By the way if the only thing I would really endorse on this show regarding places to go on agents for the most part. Okay. You'll see it left. Them will actually literally say no posing. or No short story the things like that sometimes literally say bory because only one commercial stuff. So, you always be careful about when you looking up agents to really really really research it because it's not like. Making the mistake of sending Hillary works much of magazines that you didn't really check out. The worst thing is we that set, but you don't WanNa waste time phased in some places like this because. When you're ready to do the right thing and you're going to go the other person negative remember using isn't that Ding-dong debt you know sent me a children's book and all I do science fiction. So that's what you have to be careful about you really do. Okay..
