"7 20 wg, and we've been talking a lot about voter enthusiasm. How it seems to be up, Marisol Hernandez from Chicago's Board of Election, said the first day of voting, You know, she joined us in the Wait was for hours in some spots. One of the people who's hoping for a big turnout for the Democrats is Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. She joins us now. Jan. Congresswoman, I'm sorry. Welcome. Okay. Thank you. So much for talking. So, you know, I have a weird theory that I haven't run by anyone with knowledge that so you're the first. Okay. You know, we're talking about these really long lines and part of it is enthusiasm. Certainly, But part of it is that polling places have to keep social distancing right? And that You can only have so many people voting at one time. I'm wondering if the enthusiasm and long lines is actually going to keep people away. If they're going to, you know if I show up for early voting and have to wait two hours, I'm going to lose a little enthusiasm for that way have not seen that. We have seen people thing. There's no way my vote is not gonna be capped, and we have seen people and places all over the country waiting. Unfortunately, up to 10 hours, but still having that same sort of attitude. I think people feel no matter what no matter who, no matter what kind of either to put out. I am voting. There's no way to stop me that it's going to get colder. I guess we've only got a couple more weeks, but people waiting outside for Because of Kovar 19 as well. I don't know. It just struck me that there might actually be people walking away. But you haven't seen any evidence of that We have seen actually to the app it that we have things record turnout, not turn out to vote, but actual voting taking place. Everywhere. So I think that Chicago and bar top you know, able to stand that so I stand in line to vote a couple times. No, not anymore. So I know that the progressive have a big sort of voter turnout drive over the weekend that you're involved with What's said about way our recon sure that everybody understands the importance but we're doing it in a very fun way. 50 to 50 concert. Uh, that's going to be happening three hours on Saturday night and three hours on Sunday night, including people like Linda Rod said. And most Lobos and Danny Glover and Funk, Adelia Chicago Chicago Ban I'm gonna be saying a few words very short. Yeah. Ugo, no singing, right? You're not going to sing, Are you? I am not. I know that's too bad right? Knows it too good. But it isn't 50 performers in 50 states around the around the country. You confine the concert on Facebook. You confined it on twitch or people can go to Kitty to 50 concert dot com to night one goal and that is to encourage everybody to go. Out and vote. I'm sure it's easily found online in different spots that while I have you, I want to ask you about the stimulus package. You said your home in your district unless you're called to a vote. Do you think you're going to get called to a vote? Well, it looks like there's a little progress going today. I got a letter from the number of the caucus got a letter from Nancy Pelosi. Me, um, that was saying we see a little light. For example, the Mnuchin The secretary of the Treasury has agreed to accept our plan for Kobe testing. That's good, although we have they do have a big agenda, and it's not just about the money. It's about what the values that are represented. We want to make sure that we are helping people who have lost their job that we're helping small business with people that are word that they're gonna lose their their homes because they can't pay the rent people who need nutrition because They're running out of food and money to pay for it. So we do have a big ass. It's not that far in dollars somewhere. The Republicans are right now, so we're going to continue to push and push and Nancy Pelosi we should tell our constituents that help is on the way. We'll let me ask you this and then we have to go. But are you going to give and give a cz? Well, I mean, are you making concessions on your side, Not on the basics at all. We want to make sure that people really feel From true relief from the Koven, Bill, Congresswoman. Thanks very much for joining us. I appreciate your time. Thank you so much. We're going to talk about Cove in 19 in hospital beds. You know..

"G N thanks very much for tuning in. I'm Steve Bertrand a little bit later. I've us weird theory that you know, we talked to a Marisol Hernandez of the city Elections board earlier this week, and people are waiting in line for hours to vote early. I have this weird theory that it could actually be holding the vote down. I'll talk to Congressman Jan Schakowsky about that. I'm sure she'll set me straight. Dan Goldberg from political will be here as well. To give us a broader perspective on the covert 19 numbers were the hospital spaces running out around the country and then in the 6 30 half hour, I hope you'll be around. We're going to talk to three people Instrumental to actually did the discovering off these rocks the placed in a circle. And then others in linear design on the floor of the Straits of Mackinaw. They think it was placed there in the late ice Ages toward the end of the ice age by an ancient civilization that was discovered. Aziz. This group of Native Americans tries to fight an oil pipeline there. We'll talk to the people who actually made the discovery. Ah little bit later got a question about personal finance. You might want to get on the line Police Klink is here. The number is 3129817 200. You can send us a text as well. 3129817 202. I ask question of Alise Alise. Welcome back to the afternoon news. Thank you. Nice to be here, Steve. So early in the day it looked like I was going to want to look at my 401 K when the market's closed things. We're going up pretty hot, but I doubt closed up Nash that closed down but the Dow up 100 points, which is well off its high for the day. What's the story there, But I was just a little bit of a mix, but I think there's you know if we continued to hear more talk about stimulus, we continue to get closer to the election. So there's a little bit more certainty. People are seeing people voting. You know, we're just going to see this kind of volatility right and again rising cases. We saw the case number For today hit 65,000, and we've reached a new number eight million people infected in the United States, So I think that people are very concerned what happens around the election. What with the stock market. Well, volatilities key. We're also seeing a little bit of a slowdown for real estate. So real estate has been on fire even here in Chicago, which is basically has the worst real estate market of the biggest 25 cities in the world. But it was pretty warm here for a while and things were moving in. And that seems to have slowed a little bit in some parts of the city. The same thing happens with the stock market. Everybody is just wondering. Now I think who's going to get elected? And what's gonna happen to with finances with the big death that we've got, and those numbers were just released today. I know you want to ask about those, and so people are in. There's just a little bit of volatilities that goes on before an election are there aren't there sort of axioms like if such and such if the markets here So many weeks before the election, the Democrat will win or the Republican A winner. Now we're talking conspiracy theories today. Go out and get me some of those. I don't know that I have any of those for you. But I will tell you that. You know when you're looking day to day minute committed in the stock market. You know what I would say to you, Steve, which is back that off? Shut it down and stop thinking about retirement. Right? Well, it's it's enticing when things were going up, and I mean, after the big drop, things have been going up. Well, it does suck you in. And there's some concern in the marketplace that young investors who are trading in platforms like Robin Hood have artificially inflated what's going on in the market. There are stocks, well known companies that are trading at 44 times earnings, which is about three times where they should be trading. Wait a minute. Get back up there, would you? Trading on route, right? Oh, no Robin Hood, Robin Hood. Robin Hood is a platform that came out a few years ago. That makes it very easy to buy and sell stocks and not only buying and selling stock, but you can buy and sell funds you can do put and short, So in other words, you can, you know, Take a take a gamble a flyer on whether you think the market is going to go up. We're going to go down in the future and you could do that very easily. From that platform. We've seen a lot of these fintech platform. Come to market over the last few years, making it very easy for people to invest for the future. But some of these platforms make it so easy and so cheap that you've got a whole generate new generation of day traders out there so they might be putting their money places that wouldn't necessarily be Wise, or they're putting their money in places that they're inflating the value of the actual company. Well, a little bit of a supply and demand right. You get a lot of interest in a particular company, and it eats up the idea being that you think you know that that cos goingto announce spectacular, for example, and then they don't And then the price falls. That October is kind of a strange time anyway in the stock market were waiting for October surprises for the presidential election. You've heard that phrase a lot. A lot of times that happens with The stock market as well. The Cobra surprise this year is just the next day. And then, when the actor was surprised the next day, there's one of her later in the afternoon there 31 October surprises this year. 3129817 200 is the telephone number. If you've got a question or comment for a lease or text is well, 312. 9817 200 will talk deficit and maybe earlier in the week. We're talking about a social security increase of I think, 1.3%. Now there's a push for an emergency 3% hike. Police will spell that out. Coming up. You're listening to 7 20 wg and here's Mary. It'll bit of sun.

"Thousands of consumers every day Visit Chicago Gateway cream dot or We're back on Chicago's afternoon news. It is a red flag day, which means windy conditions. It's been dry. National Weather Service says there could be some fires out. There are indeed we've been getting some pictures and sharing some pictures of some pretty smoky field fires downstate the one I think I posted I'm being told was near Bond. Ville, Illinois, Not Bonfield. But Banville. It's also a big day in Chicago as voting expands. Marisol Hernandez is the chair of the Chicago Board of Elections. Welcome to W G. N Thank you. Okay, so the super site had been opened. What? For? About a week now last Thursday, right? And now there's a spot to vote in every ward. Yes. And where is it? It's not the Alderman's office. Right Mayor saw that could be trouble. Oh, no, It's not. It's um, we have up to. Actually the majority of our early voting sites are brand new because we had to account for social distancing. A lot of the new early voting sites are in Chicago public school, so we have plenty of room for voters should come. At any one of our early voting sites. What have the crowd's been like? Or have there been crowds today? Well, we are encouraged. We are excited. We based on the information. I just re speech there. Several boards on the north side where we have anywhere from An hour and 45 minutes to two hours and a 30 minute wait and bad. That's unbelievable to me way we've never experienced that. And that is basically the 46 48 50th wards. Um, And on the outside, we have wait times of, uh, 45 minutes to an hour on the at the fourth Ward 57th. And 17 and the the There's one other ward that has a two hour and 15 minute. Uh, wait time that's the 19 wards. Now. So is this the social distancing lending toward the longer vote time? I mean, I don't know why it would Well a bit Well, we can only allow a certain number of voters in okay to comply with the CDC and the Illinois Department of Health guidelines. So, yes, that is a factor. But the other factor is we're seeing more voters than ever come out of a boat. That's just amazing to me because they think if I came upon that line I would come back, You know? Well, you got time to come back and impressed that the people are waiting like that people are fired up this year. And well, it's a beautiful day as well. And so I think people are taking advantage of that and why we're stressing on encouraging people to come out and vote early. If you're going to vote in person come out and vote this weekend to Ah, boy. The weather and possibly longer lines as we get closer to election Day. I guess that's a good point, though. Even if you're in a school and say you've got access to a gymnasium, you're not going to bring Everyone inside the gymnasium to wait in the line. You're going to keep him outside. Exactly And we're also encouraging people to download a sample ballot so that they could fill it out at home when they get to the early voting site. You know, it'll. It'll just happen that much quicker and we can get ah, more voters in who are in line. So do you think I mean, on the one hand people are very enthusiastic, but on the other if they're enthusiastic, and the lines are slow, because with social distancing, do you think that might actually hold down the vote? I think enthusiasm trumps everything else. I think people will stand in line and and vote. You know, whichever way they want about one more quick question. The police Department's going to hold a news conference tomorrow about safety at the polling places. Are you concerned about that? We have precautions. Protocols in place. We have guidelines. We talked to federal, state and city. Um, law enforcement, so we feel we have a good handle on it. Marisol Hernandez, the chair of the Chicago Board of Elections. Thanks very much. I know it's been a busy day. I appreciate you joining us. Well, thank you. Here. You bet. Let's look at the traffic and weather now, Mary Vandeveld. "Services, community services, and you know what? I believe that they are exhausted. Our police officers are exhausted. There S to do far too much. They need more training and we need to make sure that we have police reform as well. There there is an issue on a racism, a culture impact on my forum. A several leader said that there is a cultural issue on on almost police forces. So I believe we should shop together and talk about this and address this issue from the federal level with the justice and policing. Act Actually has a mandate numerator and several programs that would be helpful with transparency. I've also at the local level, we must speak to one another incompetent. And stronger communities Mr. I alone. Do you believe that there is institutional racism in America This Day? Not to the extent that. Beal out there ringing him billions and billions of dollars they haven't given one scholarship to a black person. They had them cleaned up one black community and they haven't mentored one black child. So we're there are being groups created here that are just stirring up the pot and my opponent socialist resume here doesn't doesn't want to disavow the defunding the police. She won't come out and say that you wouldn't have fun police dirt. There is a need for more. Health Mental Health Care Providers the Democrats in Illinois cut the budget on the mantle healthcare. We had to deal with that on a county low because of that, we cannot defend the police and we need to get those communities that are having. Systemic Racial. Issues we need to get them police. So those kids could go to school and move up the ladder is Newman your response to that. Yes so I'm reading is that Mike continues down this back he's been called out by the sometimes the Jillette hero news and several others there's no evidence ever of me using the phrase, a defunding police or abolish the police. In fact, I'm the only congressional candidate that has brought the police force together with the communities to have solid discussion. So we can say for stronger communities. So I'm really surprised he continues down this path, but I'll fortunately I was with the police last week at the recipe orders and that's not what they're telling me. They don't feel that you're bringing them together at all they feel that you were against them. That's why they endorsed. Because they want someone that's going to support them on the street every day just like the soccer moms that I talked to say, we want the support of the police. There's. A question that came up in the national debates recently, and that is believing whether or not. We should pack the Supreme Court with Moore justices to create a different kind of dynamic. Are you in favor of expanding the number of justices on the supreme? Court. So, let's look back at the last. Years. Ministry of Real. Madrid in court justices very quickly on and where we're at right now is that the courts have become very imbalanced would I will say is we can't politicize this problem. We all have to follow the same rule accumulated A. Would you would you expand the number? Look. So I will take that is neither yes nor a, no mister frits salone. Do you believe in expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court? I will say no now and will say no forever. But the commission and Democrats say the president ignored the original rules he'd agreed to, including letting the other candidates speak uninterrupted. "Take the first step on your walk right now. Goto ails dot org's slash walk, enjoying the movement 10 18 on W. G N just a couple more minutes with Marisol Hernandez, chairwoman of the Chicago Board of Elections, a lot of you got something in the mail from the secretary of state's office. And it seemed to indicate you'll need to reconnect with our guest. LF it seemed to indicate that you don't have your application in to get a mail in ballot, and a lot of you, in fact, did Apply to vote by mail. It appears to be in fact, we now here that it is a sort of miscommunication between the two offices, secretary of State's office Welcome to Illinois, right? Some of you are still waiting for a stimulus check or an unemployment supplement. But The secretary of state's office, just mass mail those damn things. And they went to a lot of people. Thousands hundreds of thousands of people who in fact did apply to vote by mail, people who should not have received that. I think that was your question. Laurie, you're on w g N. How are you? I doubt I Lori, you're on the air. Yeah, I was in Will County and yesterday and the geology and five o'clock news. They did interview facility from the secretary of State's office. And he said that they're required to send out that nailing everybody and that he did that. The wording on that letter. Wass confusing, so they're gonna send out a nothing? No, that's every light. You know that that which will only confuse people more, But I'm and thank you for the phone call Laura and a lot of people are observing as much a maricela that it's It's a shame that the two offices say yours or any of the Local municipalities in the state aren't better. Coordinated people get confused by this, you know? Well, I certainly understand, but that was an issue not with the local election authority. But With the secretary of state's office in the Illinois State Board of Elections, So unfortunately yet It was not of a good, uh, message That was relate. And I'm hoping that for their second mailing, they will correct all of that. Is this true that you have to sign your mail in ballot? I saw a list of mistakes that people may make, and one of them is that the signature does not appear. I believe it's supposed to appear on the envelope, right? Right. You do not find a ballot way We do not want you know who the identity of the person who filled out the ballot, but the outside envelop. There's a yellow box that the voter must fill out with their name, a direct their signature and Jake and that is how we're going to compare the signature of a on that envelope with the signature that we have. In our in our system, So it is cruise show for the voter to do that. And if I for some reason, even though I have the ballot in my hand, maybe I got it late. Maybe I lost it. But for whatever reason, I don't want to put that ballot in the mail. I can take it to a polling place on Election day, right? Well, this is the beauty of this particular election we're going to have for the first time, secure drop boxes and if a voter Feels uncomfortable about putting bad ballot back in the mail or receives it a little late. Um a lot they have to do is go to any one of our 51 early voting sites. We will have to secure drop boxes in each of those early voting sites. There will be a separate line all they have two Jewish put it in the box and it will be delivered to the board. 51 early voting sites. When are those open and available? Show, the main super site at Lake and Clarke downtown will be open as of October, 1st through Election Day. The other 50 early voting sites will be open as of October before chief. What we're doing is we are working with the Chicago public libraries and trying to affect other sites where we can put additional Dropbox. And we will have that information to the voters at junior. It's possible but as of right now, we can assure the voters that they could go to the super site. At Lake and Clark as October 1st and drop off the ballot personally, or they could go to one of the early voting. Beginning, Tober fortune. Understood, George, What was your question? You're on w g N Radio. George, How can we help you? Yes. I received one of them e mails and that they had a link to go See if you register and they couldn't find me. No problem. Well, I just don't trust the voting by mail now, after this, that fool I want to go to my appalling place. If I registered the copay may all my dignity or low to my polling place. And and that is a perfectly good option. Daughters will have the option of going to their polling place on Election Day. Going to an early voting any early voting site. But as I said, we're encouraging people to go by mail. I understand that delicious entertained George for a second here. George wants to vote in person. You don't have the ballot yet, do you, George? No, I don't. Let's assume for a moment You are going to get one. But you don't want to put it in the mail. You can fill it out and drop it off in one of those early voting sites or help me out with this, Marcel, I believe he can take it to the polling place on election day as well, Correct. So there's There's two options. One is the voter can fill out the ballot and drop it off at any secure. Dropbox got that. If the voter says you know what? I changed my mind. I want to vote in person. All the voter has to do is take the valley with him. Go chew on early voting site. You're on Election day to his precinct polling place and say. Here's my ballot. I want to vote in person. The judge of election will take that ballot. And have him sign an affidavit and allow him to vote in person. Does that sound, George? What I want to thank you, John Boy. Good luck. I don't want to discourage you from voting that way, because I want you to vote. But obviously that's not the preferred method. They'd like you to Put it in the mail. You are confident you don't see any red flags of us putting it in the U. S. Postal Service mailboxes, our own personal mail boxes. You're confident it'll get there, Marisol. We have been working with the post office for many, many months, and we have a very good relationship with the Chicago Post Office management, and they have assured us that they will do anything and everything should deliver these ballots. We also put in place certain security protocols of we've enhanced the mailing so that it Ah business reply envelope instead of a regular envelope. So that we could get it faster. I suppose they'd recognize them too. I mean, they'll be And exactly when you see the when you see the envelope, Actually, we designed it and checked it. With the post office to make sure it was acceptable to the post office. And it would allow for faster processing. So we have we have engaged in a number. Conversations with the post office to ensure that table deliver these ballots promptly. Thanks for your time, I'll let you get back to the work you're doing. We may call you again between now and no. You know, November 3rd ish, but thank you for your time today, Marcel. Well, I would love to hear back from you and your listeners. Thank you so much. "I hear a lot of questions already way to get rid of that mole Got these little ants coming into my home. I have a leaky back up from the top to the bottom and everywhere in between. I have a rental unit where the tenant allowed the door to urinate on the wooden floor wasn't Saturday mornings from 7 to 10 am joined me, Lou Manfredini. How smarts Radio Houselights Radio brought every Saturday by our friends at base. Helpful place. 23129817 206 words that describe 2022 you six words that describe 2020. So we're getting things like Thank God for Netflix and wine. Wake up call for the world. I think that is true. Wake up call for the world. The most bizarre, depressing experience ever. We said, Give me the punch line to the speed joke. We ask Dave in the gang earlier was what you call a scary movie about vegetables. I had broccoli horror picture show. Somebody pointed out to me. The Rocky Horror picture show was not a scary movie, but Even if we dispense with that, somebody said, how is the correct answer? Not silence of the EMS. I watched silence of the lambs just two or three nights ago. When is the last time you watch that were sort of dialing up are scary Movie quotient at my house getting closer to October 31st. And sometimes old scary movies, holdup and sometimes they don't Sometimes thrillers are great, and sometimes the thrill is gone. Silence of the Lambs still works. Wow. Haven't watched that in years. Watched it all the way through riveting and I forgot the ending. I forgot the very, very ending The last scene. I forgot. Hokey smokes. Watch it if you forgot Lots of questions about things you're getting in the mail about voting. If you are like me, and clearly one third of Illinois is You going to vote by mail? 7% of us last time 33 or so percent of us this time. So, they said, have a plan and maybe get the ballot in the mail by mid October, just to make sure everything goes smoothly. It's possible. The problem is some of us who have registered by mail have since gotten something in the mail saying that we don't have your registration. You better hurry up. You're thoroughly confused and a little nervous about that. Marisol Hernandez is the chairwoman of the Chicago Board of Elections. Marcel. It's John Williams. You're on w G N radio. Thanks for joining us. Well, thank you for having me. I suppose I'm not alone in getting bad. I'm sure you've heard from people that were confused. Um, there happened some questions coming to the board, and we're attempting to answer all of those questions. So, um, one of the issues you raised. This is ah, the letter from the Secretary of State's office in in an effort to, um ah to assist the voters who already applied for a vote by mail ballot. We sent an E mail out. All those persons for whom we have application, and we re assured them that we do have their their application. So yes, we did that a Saturday about Saturday. I'll go back and check my e mail. Cue them because When I filled out my application to vote by mail. Did I give in my e mail address and presumably then to that email address? You're sending a thing, saying, Don't worry about the secretary of state mailing. Yeah, So the most one of the most important things when you fill out of both by mail application, or you register to vote. If you provide us with your email address, it's extremely helpful. Because that way we can let you know when we send out your ballot when we receive it when it's being processed, and when it's been counted to reassure the voters, however, you can also go. Just go on on the website, Chicago election start Go up and check the status of your ballot. Even if you didn't provide us with an email that Chicago elections dot gov do other municipalities have Ah, Similar sort of system. Not of our listeners are in Chicago, of course. Well, each of Ah Election authority has their own system. Some Jew some Jones, so I suggest that they check with their particular election Authority. God in terms of both by mail. We are definitely encouraging people to vote by mail because it is a great option for voters who would like to vote early and not stand in line. It's convenient. If any voter has a health concern. This is a great alternative. And again, it's reliable and secure. Well, I I believe everything you just said. I don't recall getting that email, though. So now I'm Nervous that maybe there's something wrong about my application. I suppose The proof in the pudding will be when I actually get the ballot and the city is sending the ballots out tomorrow, right? It's sending out we have as of today over 409,000. A boat by mail application. We will be sending out about 245,000 ballot tomorrow. So not all of them, but but the's mass batches air going out starting tomorrow. Exactly exactly presume that everybody should be getting them within a week or so then. Um, we hope to get them out the second batch within a few days after the first batch and we hope That voters will get these ballots in the in the mail within a week. What we're recommending is you, You turned those valets around you fill them out. Within 24 to 48 hours and you put them back in the mail. What? I understand that Well, I I wanted to ask you about that, too. And I know our listeners have some other questions. 3129817 200 Chicago Board of Elections, obviously then about Chicago voting, But even if you are in an outlying area and have a general question about something you've got We'll try and entertain or help you hear 3129817 200.
