Biden Unveils New COVID Plan... Which Sounds Suspiciously Like the Old COVID Plan

"So Biden's giving his speech right now about his new plan which sounds no different than any of the old plans and it's weird how he's kind of acknowledging here for the first time that the left's whole shut it down lock it down keep everything closed double quadruple mask the kids keep the kids in plastic bubbles all the time He's acknowledging because he has to not because he didn't know a long time ago because the political ramifications are becoming real that that strategy is an abject failure And people hate it The man's approval could not be any lower I'm just looking at this now I'll get to it in a second Giancarlo sopo on his social media account a new national PBS Maris poll finds Joe Biden's approval rating is even lower with Hispanic voters that it is with whites People can't stand this

"Now i want to talk about the many injuries. Dave and what you what you went through and you had that that near death experience that i want to hear about yeah. It was crazy Why don't you have the injuries in front of you. 'cause i had somebody texts made today. They're like. I knew. I think had been stuff and i know you were tough. I didn't realize how many things happened to you during your career. So i don't know if you have the book there but i try to like recites the injuries off the top of my head. I'll just do that so Obviously the five concussion does that's what ended my career Had broken bones and my knuckles I had to have surgery and my left thumb after it broke my thumb broke my right forearm. I broke six ribs. Broken noses broke my orbital bone and mci grade three tears on both my left knee and my right knee. I'd four surgeries on my heels. I had two degrees on my shoulders. have my teeth knocked though Lots of broken bones and our our feet from from blocking shots and actually like the crazy thing was we were able to play through. Most of i didn't really. I think one year i miss a limited training camp with a broken foot but For the most part we would just play through it and like it's nuts to think about now. 'cause i'm people break something. It's normal for them to miss work. Or get crass on and stuff like we didn't do any of that we just like kept playing. And it's it's insane for me to think like my pain. Tolerance is so high. That i could just turn off and just keep going and Yeah all this is chronicled in the book folks. By the way you'll read about the these terrible accidents that they've got into playing hockey terrible injuries and by the way on the cover of the book is a picture dave and he is wearing a new york. Islands jersey on the covers book. Aren't you dave island or pitcher. They they had other pitchers jersey. I was my favorite team and we need find one with an island and jersey. Obviously there's licensing rules. So i can't have the full crest on or whatever you can tell siler. Islanders put the fishermen on their day if we'd love to see that and then Yeah amazon at the book. Right on amazon and It's been great. We've made the amazon bestseller lists or first few days actually and We still..

"Then go each other's weddings within a few years each other. I love those guys. Those are all my favorite hockey. Memories is my long island crew and Yeah i miss it. I miss a lot see. That's why you see that gang of women hanging outside the coliseum folks. That's that's the cream of long island waiting to marry a hockey player because following them from the married to the coliseum in the coliseum back to the mary right they don't know about that stayed away for the groupie set with with the Philly smith jerseys on and stuff like that. that's great. great. Time speaking with dave scatchard tonight on the program. Now when you left the islanders and you signed with the bruins how did that go over and over like a farting church. Boy that that did not go well. I signed a four year. Deal with the bruins. I could've went anywhere. I could've got more money with the rangers. Signed a five deal in. Toronto nashville is really pressing trying to get me. They really wanted me. I would've been assistant captain on the rangers play on the second line. Adam grades called me. I'm ready called me. And i don't know there's like islander ranger rivalry or if it was because they hadn't been in the playoffs or eight or nine years but there was just something that was like not wanting like i just didn't want to go. One way and ronson was really aligning nicely with that. They just signed glen. Murray they decide joe thornton. They signed recrossed all their core guys that just gave good contracts. So i'm like okay. Well i'm gonna go there. And i was thinking for years the thinking it'd be there for the next ten years go there and be part of a group that could win. Who's more likely to win. And boston was really aligning and actually like after i got traded. I think they wanna come. True was later so my my plan was right but You know they have cheeseburgers. Ron was oven coming youngster. Who's a superstar now. and phoenix really needed a the They needed a centerman and we boston. needed defense..

"And the funny part about the story is You know it's not funny. I had three other surgeries on those feats still not knowing as ever gonna play again and with two weeks left to go on in in the In the summer. I was able to finally get a pair of skates on my feet and I made the nhl that cheney camp. So i just hit everybody. Could i fought everybody i could. I tried to get noticed and You know somehow somebody like me and it. A bunch of superstars that they need a little. Bit of grit. And what. I brought the table and You know we had messier and berry and mogilny and linden. We had a great team But they they just needed somebody with some grits. Luckily filled that role my first. Nhl game was in japan. And the fighting is i never went back to syracuse. To get my car. So there's a car in syracuse. That's still probably probably still low. But i left it on the curve. I might let the keys. The because i wanted my roommate's build a borough it or london or whatever so i have no idea what the what the lost age vote what i have to do with that car but some somebody must have it now and nobody for motor vehicle city. Syracuse is listening to us. Tonight those folks wondering syracuse at that time the syracuse crunch was an affiliate of the vancouver canucks and the conduct soon traded you to the new york islanders. Dave how did you feel about going in coming back to long island. Yeah it was Just to be totally. Transparent and honest vancouver was a really i is organization are our private plane was incredible food on the plane the way they treated their players. Way the city vancouver to carry you like it was like being a rock star. And i was third or fourth line player. But i treat it like i was like you know the greatest player in the world is crazy and then when i got traded i asked for trade but i asked for after christmas and I went like two days before christmas. So i ended up staying christmas in new york dot knowing anybody but the same thing with kevin weekes. Bill mccall we got traded for felix van. Then the funny part about that story is we. We leave vancouver. There's ten media cameras and people getting autographs. I think of big sendoff to to love hockey so much and when we landed. Jfk barely party. I can't remember which airport all to our suits and ties on. 'cause we thought there's going to be like a big press rupe filming us when we came off the plane and interviewing us asking about the trade and stuff like it wasn't vancouver and the truth was i don't know if milburn forgot where There was there was nobody there. Somebody there big us up. There's no media and we're with our hockey gear. We packed all belongings to live for the next five or six months in a couple of bags. And we're standing on the street corner and Trying to get a hold of somebody from the islanders until they tell us where to go do so in wrenching limousine packing in giveaway goalie pads all our suits and all our bags are hockey sticks in the stretch limo and it was so packed to the to the roof we is the whole interior of the stretch limo and the trunk and then we hadn't eaten all day because it was a holiday played across.

"Who was a big baseball fan. Went onto defend this and explain that look by the end of nineteen sixty three sadly we had lost john f. kennedy we'd been fascinated but we still had madison maitland fact you know he said if you look back on the early nineteen sixty nineteen sixty one america was following embracing manson mantle much more so than they were john f. Kennedy i mean. He'd been elected president in nineteen sixty between sixty when he was overcome with the cuban missile with the bay of pigs. Questions that was a huge embarrassment and a stain on his legacy and then in nineteen sixty two. The almost took the country a nuclear war against the soviet union with the cuban missile crisis. That lasted You know tense two weeks or so in october. Not to mentioned some of the other of the kennedy years as professor slesinger pointing out We're not as rosy as we were often times led to believe that had been A lot of that hadn't been the whole Whatever you wanna call it. The embellishment that went on. I mean the ideas that the kennedys were playing The theme to camelot in the white house. All of these things were as much about image building anything else. So he's making this point here you have mantle and mariss together in nineteen sixty nineteen. Sixty one We were tuning in at this point the tuning in the evening to find out who did home runs or had both of them. Not what is president kennedy done today into nineteen sixty. Two's they're still having a great season. They need the yankees to another pennant another world championship. Sixty three another pennant. Sadly they met up with with sandy koufax in the world series in sixty four another pennant. But you know the to eminem boys were responsible for that. Unfortunately you know they they. They made up with a great their cardinals teams of that era and so he made this argument. I'm thinking at that time. I remember johnny down these notes and all later. When i was working on the first kennedy became the first Book that i did. I had a great deal of this and we had been. Fortunately he was just a book manuscript too long. And of course the editing we. We edited a lot of this out. as we did marathon and demise you i mean maitland. Demise young editor doubt mantle and And single mcelwain berra mantle and martin still hit the high points and all of the things that we come to know about them but as far as their relationship Knows a lot of that had to be pulled out because interesting stories about that and then original manuscript i manage between twenty five hundred thousand pages and pages which is eight hundred thousand words. Yeah it's hard to get a book published. Eight hundred thousand link Eight hundred thousand patriot elicits about.

"I think that had to do with handling the media or his inability to handle the media but the making of roger marriage. You can take all the way back to fargo north dakota and that braced this guy to be able to take on some of this The great outfielder red sox Mike shannon tells these wonderful stories about roger. He was one of our teammates and bumpiest best friend on those Cardinal teams all that great cardinals stretch show in the late sixties. And it's his opinion that mantle lived for putting it up the yankee fans. You know watch and at that was what drove him. That you know Those that final month of september. Into october one. You know the data bursary for roger breaking records just a couple of days ago true now their role in camelot. Tony we we have that in the title. Where madeleine marras fit in the the ideology the the place so to speak that we call camelot. Camelot belongs to the mythology surrounding john. F. kennedy and his president either early nineteen sixty as a newspaper man. I never covered sports. I was actually. There's a political writer and in the mid seventy nine was what is fellowship to harvard. To go there and let my head go mushy. I guess or are study. Something solid like third world nation building. I think that's what i was supposed to be studying. Instead i wanted to leading books i hadn't read and and hanging out at the institute of politics there on campus and one weekend there no snow of new england. They had a seminar symposium on the age of kennedy the agent. John kennedy the years that he was president and who among the speakers they had was arthur schlesinger junior the great historian and the kennedy homer is that were i mean he. He was as much kennedy is anything else. Yes and he's speaking and at one point. He says that he said something. To the effect that the nineteen sixties in america were possibly defined as much by and amylase they about president kennedy himself and people were just flabbergasted by that but slesinger..

"Difficult comparing them from One thousand nine hundred twenty s to nineteen sixty one just unimaginable so it. It's an unfair to do that. As far as the mon- chang-chol and whatever and the book go into command marican roger marriage and how when he was a rookie In the minors the the indians and also the as to some degree wanted him to change the way he yet. Because we had that uppercut swing and You know for years and hitting coaches taught the to cut down on the ball To go hit the in the gaps and whatever. Roger wouldn't do that so you can make the argument. That roger manners in the late fifties and into the sixties. The height of his career was the Postwar for the home run hitting techniques that batters used in major league baseball news today. Great point town exactly that. That's what we're saying about. There was launch ankle and sixty one bitten. Nobody really talked about it as such now. We're talking to tony castro by his great new book about roger morrison mickey mantle. What was the greatest thing you learned about mantle and marissa in your research. Tony back their friendship. I think it was just that. I think i known mantle. Personally in the in the seventies and then looping in the eighties and the amount of admirations that he had provide for marriage that he expressed in conversations. Should we had. And then things that was later read about and people told me about is just incredible. It was like This is the guy that mickey mantle had had his choice of being like someone. It would've been like roger. Mary's you know by the time making met marriage. I think the possibility of that influence was not very likely to happen. mickey's influences in the early sixties and mid sixties had taken their toll and had imprinted themselves upon his psyche. But i think that was the thing that i that i learned that mantle Looked upon this guy as a guy who he would recommend somebody follow and if you'll remember when mantle was dying in nineteen ninety five in one interview us sad video of mickey mantle speaking out and saying you know kids don't be like me right I was supposed to be you know this this this and nothing. I'm not a role model and he doesn't mention ayers but he could have very well very well. True toning now did their upbringings have anything to do. With the way things worked out in their relationship not so much in the relationship. I think in the way that marriage who's able to persevere. I think mass had this us against the world mentality that he developed with his brother a year old and moody when they were young Growing up there in In north dakota they thought the whole world against them any number of reasons some had to be there eastern european Immigrant roots some of the had to be the fact that they were. You know roman catholics Some of the had to do with just being. Who were they thought. The world's against them in roger houston This motivation kinda like tom. Brady being the hundred ninety nine player taken in a six round of his craft beer and housing issues. That to motivate yourself here with roger marris. You had this motivation motivation. Going on within him of the world being against him. So it didn't take yankee fans to prefer mantle over him or his teammates preferring mantle over him or you know fans across the united states in nineteen sixty one wishing mickey mantle would break the record rise in roger. Roger anticipated all of that. And you know some of the other stuff you on the thing that caused you to start falling out and gave him bits..

"So even at that time it would have been different today even more. So yeah i mean. Mcguire was sort of protected from the media by the cardinals back in nineteen ninety. Eight and roger was never afforded that Protection changes in clubhouse. At how the mediums graded access took changes. I mean part of it was Sadly when women became sportswriter for more women's beginning sports writers. Some of that began to be changed. I mean olympic access was limited The way players were presented to the media after the game shows limited and it has changed a to con- you know through the players association and then negotiations over the years right now. One of the criticisms of roger marris is going to sound familiar to the fans listening Today the younger fans. It's the uppercut swings in order to elevate the ball to put it bluntly and in current terms lawn chango which i hate to discuss but there was a an incident or a time when the great rogers hornsby who hit four hundred twenty four one year stated that a hitter like mary's has no right hitting sixty one home run stony well. I think that was just Snobbery pure and simple And you're talking about nineteen twenty four Good lord i mean that that's what that was forty years before roger mathis. Yeah almost forty years a different tapa baseball. This type of approach baseball on Rogers once he didn't play games didn't have to face You know pictures coming out of the Out of the bullpen like Those guys did in nineteen sixty one and certainly nothing like what they do today. I mean imagine. Rogers wants to be hitting playing today. I mean i've heard people argue that he would be lucky to fifty. I don't know you know hitters or hitters. And i'm sure somebody like hornsby would find a way to to be successful even if the day game. But it's comparing eras Even something from sixty one to ninety eight it's.

"How would you call it strikeout. In that i could see in casey stingl. Unless you're going to go back all the way to nineteen fifty one. In the way he introduced mantle to sports writers. He talked he was the one who created this big myth about mickey mantle. This nineteen year old kid out of oklahoma on barely step into the big city and casey proclaims him the next next garrick the next maggio. Hopefully we stand after that. And i think it was a wonder in nineteen fifty one that mickey mantle was able to have the spring training that he did and the early weeks that he did in nineteen fifty one. The pressure just got to be too much for him. And and i think that whenever you do that whether it's a kid in high school or whether it's to a kid and in college whether it's to a young man in baseball or any sport you need to have your heading cabin exactly speaking with tony castro tonight about his new book on roger madison mickey mantle. What you do delve into to tony. What i enjoyed was the the back stories of how mandolin marriage ended up together on the yankees and the first place yeah mass who of the later lane himself in his rookie season that was in the mid nineteen fifties. The cleveland indians had built an organization that won the nineteen fifty four and they had a lot of taliban. They had some great arms. They had new young arms. They had heard school. They had People like rocky colavito in the system. They had right They had that roger marras in assistant. Roger marissa in his rookie season got off to such a great start. Everybody was predicting that this would be the rookie of the year that year. He got hurt and he was never the same. You know the according to the marriage side of the story he was brought back too early and too much was expected of in too early and he was never the ball fair he in the middle and the end of the season that he had been in those early weeks but he's made a name. So why did he. Ford and mickey mantle Took note of them in the early meetings. i mean the teams playing each other. What twenty two times. A season back in two hundred and fifty..

"When you were a kid you gotcha very simply there. We go okay now How did you become a writer. And what your drew you to baseball for. So many of your books man played baseball. They spun t can't The depression he played baseball in the military and then he played baseball and mexican leagues in the late forties early fifties and so it was difficult not to especially when he had posters of joe demise show and later one mickey mantle hanging in the hall and then later they were taken into nine bedroom though it was almost by What what else. Yeah that's that's a great answer tony for sure now. I was thinking when i picked up the book. I'm going to ask tony. Why did you bill morris i ahead of mantle. I didn't know Writers whether it's in hollywood or whether it's books it seems like writers are always the last person on on. The thing is when i first came to los angeles and somebody was telling me this great joke about writers about the dumb blonde. Who fell in love with the writer thinking that would help her career. And that's where and so. I say that as a way of answering your question there which is that. The title of the book was something that The marketing people publishers often have a great influence in handling. And this was one of those cases. Gotcha so he was the one that broke the record you know. You're the one that that he in sixty one he he One and that chariots of fire is at work in baseball. He came out ahead. he did hear exactly right. Tony i get you now now. What the book does folks I learned that a large part of the legend isn't quite accurate. And tony brings out some other points it. it's informative. And and a great read. Dat sorta reshapes some of the preconceived history. We have a few new angles. You bring out for sony. Well i hope i did. I you know some of that is the nearest mental relationship. Which not so much that has been misunderstood. So much as it was mistreated. I think from the way it was written about there in the late fifties early sixties. Not unlike what happened with marissa mantle mantle and demise show in early fifties. Now one of the things that i enjoyed About the book was learning about the old professor himself. Casey stangl who later managed the mets. He wasn't the guy that everybody thinks he was. Was he tony well. He wasn't when he was a genius. His own right He had been a Players you know. His pedigree is the achievements of casey single not to be denied. The problem the casey stangl ran into like all of us. You know age catches up and there's no arbiter for that and Nineteen sixty that will series who wouldn't have pitched eighty four three times that they'd had a chance there and he was available white. I think you're not totally dull, maybe adults who a degree, but not we're super dulled compared to how we were at Candlestick Park. So to imagine how thrilling it was for her to be in the Yankee dugout and walk up those steps and look at Yankee Stadium. I wish I could rekindle that enthusiasm were you know we take it for granted now, so I'm saying That's all. I got to ponder that. That's all. I mean, when I was a kid, probably the thrill of opening those doors at Candlestick and seeing the green ever come close to that is, you know, No, we go in and we hang out. We talked to everybody. Well, that's the romanticism of just being young and doing things for the very first for her. She's never been on a field before. She'd never been in a dugout before, and she looked overwhelmed by it all starting to wear me down. I'm starting. It was like she recaptured it for me a little bit. I wanted to be a steely and cold. But now Murph is warming me up. Copes. There's nothing I can do. Listen, I'm not. I'm not dying. I'm not going to jump on. Grenade for this story. I just thought it was worth mentioning for a minute. Pathetic. Let it come to this and I'm OK with this guy to there's room for both definitely room for the same fan baseball. That's a Yankee fan. Right there. Same fan base. All right, All right, so it's pathetic. This is go. Into the Giants. What did the Giants have to say about talk men going for second base? "On. What risk tolerance do we have as a society. Are we willing to accept that you know what percent chance or likelihood that something goes wrong. What is what is the outcome if it does using nuclear verses Going the route that we're going which is okay. We're going to basically extinct ourselves if we continue on this path. And we've been on this planet for this very tiny sliver of time. We were doing a great job making sure that like our branch of the evolutionary tree ends And so i think it's a major concern and yeah we we can solve the problems but getting people to agree is an understanding is very challenging. It's just so weird and there are so many economic tools you used to make nuclear work. I don't understand why we don't give some sort of dividend to the people who live near a nuclear reactor so if a group of people said hey yeah. We'll put this in this suburb of taxes on the suburb of ohio. Or wherever you can just tell people there you thousand dollars a month for living in the zone or will pay to relocate you whichever you prefer. There are dozens if not hundreds of nuclear reactors flooding around in the oceans and under the oceans. We launched them into space on satellite. So i think that we understand this technology. While enough that referring to bombs. I take it no. I'm referring to the reactors on on on summaries. Yeah certainly at bombs. Now we're into the tens of thousands probably satellites that go up that are nuclear powered. And and and i just i think we're stocked because there's been an unwillingness or maybe not a a a right. Yeah when a company misses you know buying it. Why does that occur. And why does ducker do so good at that moment in time. Do you think. I think i think there's two reasons like they have one. There's no fear around the price. No one wants to look stupid. So so Completely overpaid for this asset. I mean if you think of what base paid for whatsapp the time eighteen billion or something. "Exits. The crowd account is free. Just go to. Ou r. c. r. o. w. d. dot com slash twist. So you simply list what you're gonna do. You put bullet points. I suggest this is the first thing you do in the day. And when i first implemented this some people didn't do it then. I started replying to them. And this is a great management technique. If you're replying to them or you're doing emojis in slack and just giving people a thumbs up a high five boy this let them know. Hey we actually recognizing you giving recognition and it's only five minutes. I tell people if you're taking more than five minutes than i as the manager or your manager or the company has not given you clear instructions. If you don't wake up go to work and say. I know what i'm gonna do today. Whose fault is that. Is it your fault or is it your boss's fault. I think it's probably the ladder. And so this creates clarity between management. How many people say my manager. You know gosh darn it. He he or she never gives me clear instructions. I don't know what they want. I can never please them. Well if you're all in agreement these are the three or four danger gonna get done today and this week boy does that. Create clarity and it removes a whole set of tensions. Then i said to folks. Hey you know we're using notion and we're documenting everything we do. We're moving to a written culture from a meeting culture. As i talked about with trainer and a lot of us in the pandemic did this. Well i say like with crash in this example of the angel university. Can you link to the notion page where we have our checklist member. I always talk about that book. The checklist manifesto which had a great impact on me a great book as an aside. You should read it if he links to the checklist. Well then everybody in the organization can go see his checklist. find items on his checklist. That should be on their marketing checklist. Right and then. Those links are really helpful. Then with the podcasting team. I told them. Can you put what episodes were taping this week. And then what. The publishing schedule is and linked to the episodes and linked to the show notes from them. What that did was. The sales team didn't know what episodes were coming. They had would have to ask now. Nobody has to ask. They know where that is on the notion. And in the slack and this has created a flywheel like you wouldn't believe we are all in sync and the linking to work makes it super easy to educate your team members and that goes back to the number one complaint. People have in businesses we. The communications is the biggest problem. Everybody says communications is the biggest problem in every marriage. Friendship work relationship family. Because we as you know these primate monkeys chimpanzees we are socially driven communication can dictate how we feel. We are also problem. Solving monkeys right. That's what we do. We are problems as every day. A couple of little problems to get a little bit of work done. It makes us feel good. So what makes humans feel-good accomplishing something and certainly accomplishing something with a team. That you respect or a family member or friends that you love and respect this is when our best selves. I believe when we're chimpanzees in a group you know apes strong as per planet of the apes when we do stuff together we feel good and this end of the day. Start of day and of we man. Does this make you feel good about work. You're the ball and you're getting stuff done. it's so easy and if it feels like they're not contributing. My belief is overwhelmingly mandy. Nine percent of people out of one hundred ninety nine out of one hundred people ninety nine percent same thing. That is what people want. They want to get be a contributor. There's nobody who comes to work. And says i want to put in a bad day's work i wanna sandbag today. Is that a thing. I don't think that's the thing for anybody. So the other thing i found was this level. The playing field between remote employees and impersonal wants the in person ones. We're getting all my attention attention. The remote ones warrant but when everybody does this oh boy. Now it's a level playing field. Another thing that happens. Says there are some people in your organization when you implement this who will fight it. And they'll feel like you're micromanaging. It and i had somebody and one of organizations fight me on it and said i'm willing to do any. Owi should've taken out of fire. The person immediately and men all the downstream problems. I had with them. Were all this very like selfish. I don't want to say what i'm doing and it turned out. They really weren't contributing as much as their peers. Or some of the people who are below them getting paid a fraction of what they were getting paid. If somebody fights you on this. It's likely the reason they're fighting. You is that they're not getting it done. They're not doing the work they're not keeping up with everybody else. And that's okay. They belong at another organization. If you can't run with the seven eight mile per minute team you should be running with the nine or ten mile team also. How unfair is it when your boss takes credit for your work man. That used to make me young jake. How when i was starting out when my boss would take my credit for my work and then mike savino my boss's boss would find out. I did it because we would go out and have a drink after work when that person left at five thirty that middle manager who i hated it in this program would have exposed him and what is shown who was actually doing the work and who was taking credit for it. So i'm a believer in anybody being able to do the work and take on work. I don't believe in hierarchies. I believe in performance achievement. So this is a great equalizer. The same people who fought me on doing the end of work and of day and said i will just do an end of week. There's people who wanted.

Nine percent nine ninety nine percent mike savino this week one hundred people ten mile three five minutes today first angel university more than five minutes one hundred ninety nine seven eight mile first thing four danger jake Owi five

With 'Raya,' Disney has their biggest animated action hero to date — and yes, she's still a princess

"Chang says the new Disney film Riot, and the last Dragon is not just for kids. He calls it a gorgeously animated fantasy adventure with a hopeful message. For this moment, the movie began streaming on Disney plus today. Ryan and the last Dragon is the lovely moving surprise. Its big selling point is that it's the first Disney animated film to feature Southeast Asian characters. Like so many movies that break ground in terms of representation, it tells a story that's actually woven from reassuringly familiar parts. Didn't mind that in the slightest. The movie directed by the Disney veteran Don Hall and the animation newcomer Carlos Lopez. Estrada brings us into a fantasy world that's been beautifully visualized and populated with engaging characters. And it builds to an emotional climax that I'm still thinking about days later. Story is a little complicated as these stories tend to be It takes place in command Ra and enchanted realm inspired by various Southeast Asian cultures and divided into five kingdoms, named after a dragon's body parts heart Thing, spine, Talyn and tail. Before they became extinct centuries ago. Dragons once roamed the land and served as friendly guardians to humanity. Their magic lives on in a Jule called the Dragon Gym, which is kept in a cave in the heart, but the other four kingdoms covet. It's mighty powers. One day all five factions come together and try to reach a peace agreement. But tensions erupt. Ah fight breaks out, and the gem shatters into five pieces that are scattered across come, Andhra. This opens the doorway to an ancient enemy called Bedroom, a terrible plague that turns people to stone. Actually, a hero must rise and save the day. Her name is Ryan. And she's a young warrior princess from heart voiced by the excellent Kelly Marie Tran from Star Wars. The last Jedi. I Ryan manages to escape the drone, though her father, her body whose leader of heart isn't so lucky. Now Ryan must recover the pieces of the Dragon Jim, reverse the damage and banished that room for good. This is the first time we've seen a brave young character embark on a quest for magical bottles. And Ryan and the last Dragon is rooted in traditional fantasy lore with the Lord of the Rings and game of Thrones being just the most obvious influences. Movies, Intense scenes of sword play and hand to hand combat. Give it a tougher, more grown up field and most Disney animated fantasies. My own young daughter had to cover her eyes a few times. Some other recent Disney princesses, including marijuana, and Elsa Ryan has a bold, adventurous streak and isn't all that interested in romance? Unlike them, she doesn't even have time to sing a song. That said the movie still has plenty of lightness and humor. Screenwriters. Quick win and Adele Limb have provided the usual Disney array of cute critters and lively supporting characters. None of them is more colorful than see Soo Ah friendly water Dragon who is magically resurrected during riots journey. She's the last of her kind, and she has a crucial role to play in the story. She's voiced delightfully by Aquafina doing one of her signature chatterbox comedy routines and selling everyone of ceases and naturalistic wisecracks. In one scene, she touches a piece of the dragon Jim and magically Lights up. Which riots sees as a hopeful sign. You were glowing. Oh, thank you. I use Alan Rivers climb. Maintain my know this'd my little sister office magic. I got that glow in your little sister's much jack. Yet. Every dragon has a unique magic. Okay, What's yours? I am a really strong swimmer. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You touch this gym piece, and it gave you powers. You know what this means? Right? I no longer need a night light. What? No, you're still connected to the jumps. Magic, not means you can still use it to save the world. If we can get all the other Jen pieces, you can reassemble it and, well, the drooling away. And bring my bar back and bring all of commander back Ryan and sees his journey takes them toe. All five kingdoms of command ra all of which are so vivid and transporting, I found myself wishing they really existed. More than I could have at least seen them on a proper movie screen. There's the town of talent, which is built at the edge of a river and the desert wasteland of tail where Ryan and See Soo must enter a cave of obstacles straight out of an Indiana Jones adventure. As the two of them search for more dragon Jim pieces. They, of course, pick up a few friends along the way. There's a street smart boy who cooks a mean shrimp Con ji and a toddler pickpocket, whom I found more creepy than cute. The movie's most intriguing character is no Mari arrival. Princess from Fang, who's voiced by Gemma Chan. As a side note. Chan and Aquafina both appeared in crazy rich Asians, which, like this movie was co written by Adele Limb. Mari and Roya used to be friends until the fight over the dragon Jim rip them apart. Now they're bitter enemies, and their emotional dynamic is fierce and complicated in ways that relationships are rarely allowed to be in Children's animated films, especially between women. Contrast, See, Sue is all feel good vibes. She's a dragon, after all, with little understanding of how treacherous humans can be. She doesn't get by riot and the Mari distrust each other so why they can't just set their differences aside and defeat the drone together. It's Caesar's sincerity and purity of heart. That makes the stories finale so unexpectedly stirring, especially now. Our fates are closely bound together. It reminds us as it builds a case for forgiveness, reconciliation and mutual sacrifice. The emotional power of riot and the last dragon sneaks up on you. Its lessons aren't knew exactly, but it makes you feel like you're learning them for the first time. Justin
