Britt Lyle II on design

"Your host Maris cherry and this week. I'm talking with Britt Lyle the second a Motion Graphics designer here in Atlanta, Georgia. Let's start the show. All right. So tell us who you are and what you do. My name is Britt Lyle. I am a motion graphic designer. I'm a graphics assistant at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now, I've been asking everyone, you know kind of starting off for these interviews how they're sort of holding up right now, you know, we're recording this right now in late September. It's pretty easy. I think well known that we're going to be in the states for a while. Now, how have you been holding up during this pandemic? Oh, wow, there have been like there been good days and bad days. I've been holding up generally well, but like there have been, you know good days and bad days. Like I said I tend to deal with anxiety sometimes so that has been kind of a struggle wage. Kind of cope with along with like just regular anxiety Then the election and covid-19. Like one of the things I learned in grad school is like you have to take time to for yourself, especially in stressful situations. And this entire year has just been one big stressful situation off. So it's very very important to like make yourself as comfortable as possible. Especially someone who like regularly deals with anxiety and off. Yeah, so I just basically just tried to make sure that if I feel like in some type of anxiety attack coming that I make sure to remove myself from the situation and ground myself before coming back to reality so to speak gotcha. Now let's talk about your work at sports and entertainment and can you kind of briefly describe what a MB sports and entertainment is and just sort of what is a regular day like for you right now since you're working from home, so am be Sports entertainment. We are sort of like a company within a company job. We do work for the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. My job specifically is Graphics assistant. So basically that means I help out anyone else you need help with any other big project whether it's coming up with Gameday Graphics video editing color correction or any other regular or irregular occurrence. I might occur to you today. How did you get started there on a whim a lot of a lot of the jobs that I've gotten in particularly designed jobs of Applied on a whim. So I was laid off at my previous job, which I was very very sad about and I was just applying applying everywhere that I can and I saw the post for graphics assistant at a MB. And again, it was one of those things for me. It's like I can't in good conscience past this up and say Thursday. I tried everything that I could so I apply thinking that like I wouldn't hear anything and they turned out to be one of the few people that actually gave me like like three rounds of interviews and hired me within like a month. Nice. Yeah, so you mentioned, you know kind of working on these, you know, not random projects, but you kind of work on an ad-hoc basis as an assistance. So are there any sort wage projects that you like take the lead on or you always kind of working in that second kind of capacity mostly in a secondary capacity because there are people who have been there since the building open since as soon as construction ended they hired a design team and those and some of those people have left but there are still some people have been there since its Inception and they kind of know they build out the process. They're the ones who really like all the assignments all of the the dimensions birth. All the renders all of these little details. They're the ones who built it from the ground up and I'm essentially follow the process. I'll give my two cents every now and then if I feel like it'll help but for the most part they have pretty much have like a game plan laid out for how certain things are done and how certain things are processed. And so, you know, just so folks name Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta is fairly new. I think it was opened and what 2018-2017 2017-2017? Okay, and then prior to that it not in the same space, but pretty close to it was the Georgia Dome that's where I used to work actually years and years and years and years ago. I worked for the Georgia Dome the the Georgia World Congress Center and since Olympic Park, so I'm familiar with that whole kind of campus area and I know back then I mean Georgia Dome all that is owned by the state, but Mercedes-Benz is privately owned. Do you know if off? Any of the the Congress Center staff works there also since it's so close not intimately like I think some people transferred but I mean as far as I know most people have been there since MBS was a thing. I'm not sure if any other people from Georgia Congress moved on to other projects, but I do know that they got a lot of different people from a lot of different places to kind of help build this team up. Yeah. I was just always curious about that cuz I still know a good number of people over there so long what's the best thing you would say about the work that you do? All of the work that I do is like kind of unconventional and well, I guess not unconventional like sort of a dimension sizes that I do that I work with like no one else in the world really works with these type of Dimensions cuz inside the stadium there's this song Halo board, and it's like six feet high, I think it's got like Fifty four thousand LED lights on it and the the file sizes and the dimensions that we work with are just pretty unorthodox and pretty wild to kind of like work with and when I first got started, you know someone I got trained in art school or just doesn't in designing was as the standard 1920 x 1080 and then suddenly I have to deal with sizes that are like fifty thousand nine fifty thousand five thousand or ten thousand sizes and it's kind of weird but it's also kind of cool cuz like you you kind of makes my portfolio stand out a little bit off and yeah, I guess that would be the best thing is that like I do I do the type of design that are very different than anyone else does and it may be kind of hard to put on social. Which is why I tend to put it on my website, but at the same time like not a lot of people can say they have designed the stuff that I designed and

Organizing: The KonMari Method

"There are so many ways to organize and our brains work differently. So some methods May resonate wage more than others most tidying methods Advocate a room by room or a little by little approach creating a scenario that may just never end because it's not structured wage with a beginning and an end date today or talking specifically about the con Mari method people around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only due to its Effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful introspective and forward-looking. I have a name Guided Kristen Ivy and Karen Sochi to talk about the con Mari method. They are not only licensed con Mari Consultants, but they're also the co-host of the spark Joy podcast dedicated to the transformative power of surrounding yourself with joy and letting go of all the rest spark Joy has over a hundred and fifty episodes filled with practical home organizing tips that you can indulge in while you tidy Kristen tell me your thoughts on getting organized during this time when we feel like we don't have much control over all the things that are happening around us in the world. How important is it right now, so it's extremely helpful. Number one reason is comfort is so important right now and our home is something that we can actually control. I immediately thought about everyone who doesn't feel really comfortable or organized at home and how they're not going to have that break where they can go to work log. Not look at the Clutter work is now at home along with many other activities. So I was on a mission from day one to help people who are feeling a little bit too close to their clutter get through that and now that we are a little bit more used to this new normal than I've been helping my clients virtually getting really settled with their work from home situation by doing a tiny desk series. We're we're actively tidying through our screens cuz we're getting really comfortable with that. So that's the good news. So we've been able to still, you know tidy on no matter where you are in your personal Journey. There's always room for baby steps forward organizing can be learned. It's a practice much like meditation. I feel hard in the beginning but it gets familiar and more natural as time goes on Karen. Were you always an organizer I come from a long line down? Very organized people and organized in a sense that they would relieve their own anxiety by vacuuming it 2:00 in the morning and that kind of thing. So things were not really ever out of place. I come from a long line of collectors. So I inherited both of those traits. I was a collector which in some ways is described as an organized hoarder and I took elected all kinds of things. I collected antiques and collectibles and I could never just owned one of something. I found one Bell in a souvenir shop that was great on vacation. And then all of a sudden was collecting Bells from all over the place. It was just really a thing with me when I finally realized how much time I was spending just taking care of all of this stuff. I realized even though on the outside things look very organized in my home. It wasn't really organized at all. It was really just at a mask set of things that I was continually maintain. And it was really keeping me from having the kind of life that I wanted to have. It really kept me stuck in the past. It kept me stuck in one place just emotionally and psychically off and I realized that I I had to start becoming much more selective about what I was surrounding myself with so I guess in a way I was organized at least it looked that way on the outside home, but mentally it was just nothing but chaos in my life. I always enjoy the process of self-reflection because when we do it, we learn so much about ourselves tell me about the move you may that gave you some different perspective on yourself. So as moving from one small apartment to another small apartment in New York. Both Apartments was super different from each other the first appointment that I had lived in for nine years hundred and ten year old five-story appointment in a really old historic part of New York City and I was moving to the 35th floor of a brand new high rise skyscraper. Are in Midtown the appointment was so different. There was no way that I could take that old life with me. I was also moving in with my now husband and it was our first shared home. So I knew that way to decide once and for all whether I was going to continue being surrounded by all of this stuff or I wanted to try something different. So at that same time Marie's book came out in English the life-changing magic of tidying up and I somehow just bought it and you know, I have no idea how I found it to begin with read the book and decided that it's part of my move I was going to do is complete, Mary tidying festival and see what that led me. So I did and I followed the book as best as I could. I ended up getting rid of half or more of everything I own and moved into this apartment with such lightness and such optimism about what the future held that I was just submitting with his whole idea that knob Was it about the stuff but it was about my future and was about my life going forward and that's really how I kind of fell in love with with Kamari and getting organized

All The Fun Stuff (That Shouldn't Be in Your Drinking Water

"Our guest today is Maury Walker and together, we're going to talk about what's in your water and more than ever. That answer is stuff that shouldn't be Maury. Welcome. Thank you. It's great to be here. We're so happy that you're here. Could you maybe just tell everybody who you are what you do? Yeah. So I am actually at Duke University, I make graduate students starting my fifth year studying micro-plastics. So my doctoral dissertation is in civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Uh studying chemicals associated to plastic and how they end up in. Things like our fresh water or the stomach acid in a bird or fish, and just understanding how those chemicals transform in possibly more toxic than the original products. But yeah, I'm a engineer and chemist. Chemists, Great Brian it's just like you. Same as me yes. Amos me you said, you went to Duke and Queen you love Duke Right look. It's not that I don't love. Duke. It's one of my good friends growing up as like a UNC basketball guy and so. I know I know I know I know sorry about this Amari. Like. We. Don't have to high. It's it's it's different than. Saying. My undergrad was at UC. Berkeley. So my to rival his Stanford right now. Oh Nice Nice Nice my wife. And my wife went to Stanford but she also doesn't care about sports and so people are very confused on they're like Berkeley's terrible. She's we can all be friends. Yeah. We we can work on it. Said holy cow quickly as a reminder to everyone because we haven't done this in a while Our goal always is to provide some context for what we're talking about today and then dig into a action oriented questions that we can all ask to help support today's topic and and Amaury Yup that sounds pretty great to me. We'll see if he can remember how to do this been a little bit of a hiatus. which is which things have been a little a little crazy out there. Just, a little bit just a little bit anywhere anyways Ann Mari We like to start with one important question to set the tone for the chaos follow Instead of saying, tell us your entire life story we like to ask Amari wire you vital to the survival of the species. If I just had like a compilation of guests making that noise after first reaction we need to do that. Yeah it's great. Great. The the easy answer there is that I'm just one person in a collective of people that care about leaving the world a better place than it started, but I I kind hope to. Be Relevant in the fact that I am a black female environmental engineer in chemist trying to change the world as far as micro-plastics in water quality and you know I'm trying to be an inspiration to other people who may not have considered a career I'm like this or you know a the that you can't be a scientist or engineer and even a science communicator. So I'm hoping to take a little bit more of a public facing way to show people that there are people out there trying to change the world

Elijah McClain's parents sue Colorado police over his death

"The family of Elijah MacLean has filed a federal civil rights suit against the city of Aurora, Colorado, You'll remember he was the unarmed 23 year old who died in police custody last summer. Colorado Public Radio's Alison Sherry reports on the latest developments in the case. The incident that led to Elijah McLane's death started with a call to 901 reporting a quote, sketchy looking individual. Police stopped McLane, who is African American. As he was walking home from a convenience store. McClain's family lawyer, Mari Newman, a rural police officers stopped, Elijah grabbed him tackled him to the ground and over the course of the next 18 minutes inflicted multiple types of excessive force against him. McCain wasn't suspected of any crime. In the altercation that followed. Officers put him into karate holds and kept him pinned to the ground. Paramedics who arrived on the scene, then injected him with ketamine, a sedative. His family's lawyers allege the dose was too much for his £143 body size. He went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance, and MacLean was taken off life support several days later. Maclaine's death got renewed attention this spring in the wake of the George Floyd death in Minnesota and became a rallying cry both in Colorado and elsewhere in the country for police

"York City being marked tardy yesterday, the deadline for school systems to submit their reopening plans. The city submitted their plan. But they did it late, and it lacked major details. The city now has a week to fill in the gaps. The outline of what will happen in the fall seems to be something of a hybrid combination of in class. An online learning Mari Laina Marquette E is an occupational therapist of the New York City Department of Education, She tells tens and wins. They are neglected, not all of them, but many of them, especially in communities. Where black and brown Children and their families will be most affected by our rush to reopen. Another major concern is how to handle positive Corona virus test results right now, officials say if there is a single confirmed case The entire classroom will self quarantine for 14 days and go all remote when it comes to instruction, But two cases in different classes would trigger the entire school building being shut down. Miami Marlins Outbreak Wreaks Havoc on M.L.B. Schedule

"Major league baseball season got underway last week. But so far it's been rough. More than half of the act of Miami Marlins players and several coaches from the team have tested positive for the Corona virus. As a result, Marlins games have been postponed through at least Sunday. But despite concerns over additional outbreaks, Major League Baseball officials have so far balked at the idea of canceling this truncated season altogether. Here's MLB commissioner Rob Manfred discussing the Marlin situation on ESPN on Monday. I don't put this in the nightmare category. I mean, obviously, we don't want any player. To get exposed. It's not a positive thing, but I don't see it as a nightmare. We built the protocols to allow us to continue to play. That's why we have the expanded rosters. That's why we have the pool off additional players. And we think we can keep people safe and continue to play. I've got J. McManus with me. Now she's the director of the Maris Center for Sports Communication and a sports columnist for the New York Daily News, Jane Great to have you with us. Oh, thanks for having me it. Rob Manfred, who We just heard MLB commissioner. There sounded pretty confident at least that he was going to be able to keep his player safe. But the Marlin situation sounds quite alarming. Tell us, you know how things have developed since the first cases were identified on the team. The proof is in front of him hasn't been able to keep his players safe. So the question is, what do they do now? The way that this developed was after a game in Sun on Sunday, where the Marlins were playing the Phillies before that game player had had tested positive for the Corona virus and the team of wanted to play that game anyway. And so I went ahead and played and of course, that Opens the door to exposure not just to the Marlins players, but also to the to the Phillies. And to anybody who's been working in that clubhouse. And so what you have, then is you know one test, turning into multiple tests in an outbreak and a team one of the 30 teams not being able to play going forward and quarantined in Philadelphia. Until they can figure out how to move this season forward

After 87 years, Washington's NFL team changed in two months

"World turned upside down on its head with the announcement that the Redskins after what a century have decided to Finally change their name and Ah ah image and likeness and you know a lot lot into the store because still a lot of the decisions that have to be made. Let's head out to the wait for Dotcom hotline. We're joined by then. Fisher covers the NFL and Olympics for Sports business daily. You can follow Ben on Twitter at Ben Fisher s V. J. Ben will appreciate time and thanks for spending a few minutes with us here in Atlanta this evening. Have you be there? Anytime. So then let's talk a little bit about this decision. Do you think You know, part of the You know, whatever the internal review and things like that, that they had a pretty good idea that they were going to change the name. Do you think that they probably hired a firm? To already start to put the wheels in motion of coming up with new name, new image and things like that. Well, somewhat surprisingly, I don't believe they have That there's an obvious question the sort of thing you'd almost always bring in 1/3 party, um, agency or since consultants. But it appears by all accounts to be a very narrow circle there. Dan Snyder and a couple other people and not many others. Um, I guess makes a certain amount of sense because they know the more people you bring him more likely than a leak conceit. That's about but I'm not sure they actually have gone through a lot of those traditional steps. You would expect that of somebody doing a big rebranding. How much do you think if you just had to even kind of estimate? How many millions of dollars are we talking about from? I don't know. Hiring a marketing or PR firm to help with You know, with all of this, plus the actual creation of a name and logo and, you know, obviously will be merchandising and all that kind of stuff. What kind of money do you think A team gets into when when this kind of process takes place? What? Um I'd say all in and the big cost there, I think would really actually be the the lost merchandise and the things that you've already created, Or you like to be the Mari created there now useless. Um So I mean, I'd say 30 million. Mark is finished. I mean, that's a very uninformed guests. You know, I have to check a lot of things for that Sounds right time. You got your professional thieves, illegal fees. He spent a lot of time in court. Even if no one really fights trademarking, gotta go the European Union and get those trademarks and all sorts of things you and I probably would never consider And then you know you've got what do you think of all the products in this world business cards, Coffee, moans of sign anywhere that has a Redskins logo or a name. We gotta go be replaced in very short order. And the reason that 30 I mean, 30 may be high, but we're all going on the assumption that they want this happened very quickly. And just like constructing an office power if you need it done extra fast. You're paying overtime and your pain for things that you probably rather not. But That's the cost of expediency. Ben Fisher joining us here in the wait for dot com Hotline covers the NFL for sports business daily. Then talk to me a little bit about on. I don't know. I don't know if you know this. You know the process by which We know the league wants this to happen, and Roger Goodell has supported it. But what any idea what goes into league approval is if the owners in a certain percentage About the logo aboutthe name. You know, I mean, any idea about how that process works, at least get that step done and over with Uh, yeah, We don't need to approve it on and that's ah vote of owners. But other than that, it's it's actually it's not entirely clear, not on. There's not a detail procedure in public. And that is public knowledge on exactly how that happened. But the league certainly does have rights over this. You know each of these 32 teams the individual business for certain purposes, but The league knows they're going strong in its weakest member, and they don't want to be placed. One problematic became with another dude. Definitely I'd say so over that, But you know it's a bit of a black box exactly what they would be looking for, or what? Where the where the possible problems spots are on that son. You know, Ben, when the AH When Houston moved the Tennessee I believe it was Was it two years that they played with the Oilers marker or year year and 1/2 for something that they have the moniker before the seven? Okay, so they had them so they had the order. So my point is, is that it wasn't like the day that they moved to Tennessee, they become the Tennessee Titans. How long do you think this process plays out? And maybe compared from, you know, financial and just, you know, is there some comparison to how long it took with the Titans? Even though they knew that they were going to, you know, end up changing this. Can we kind of compare the situations about how long it may take for all of this to finally come to fruition? Well, I guess there's no reason you couldn't compare them because that is the last time a team change nicknames. Um, without you know, part of Ah, relocation or, you know you could talk about the ground Reagan's thing, Whether that was technically an expansion people, whatever but It was the last time you standing franchise without moving cities of changed his name, but it's so long ago. I mean that the scope of their websites but sort of your very basic, just digital properties that the Redskins will need to rename are so much bigger and I like being all that got so much more complicated, but that there is a good four compared to because that was a situation where The name change was part of a broader strategic vision and means that happened, But it wasn't necessarily important that it happened. By given bay. They were able to do things sort of under normal business. This is something now that it is completely different because there is a sense of urgency and we don't know exactly when they want to set up a new maid. But all indications are reporting is basically as soon as possible. And this is not something that you know, most business experts say wise to do. It's possible There's a 1,000,000 different things you get wrong. That re brandy. You want to make sure everything's perfectly buttoned up. So it probably doesn't take. You know, two years it took the Oilers to become the Titans, but it surely would be taking more than the two months that it would take. To put up totally rebranded team on the field in September. So my supposition that the season is going to be something of a neuron period in regard to the Washington football team name, and the more I think about it, the more I think that they might well play this year, just like known as the Washington football Club work. Burgundy and gold uniforms that simply don't have any luck. I'm not predicting that I'm saying that maybe the most likely explanation for them trying to do this this late in the summer. Haka and cultural appropriation

"The Haka is a part of Mari Culture. It's a type of movement that involves the whole body invoice New Zealand's rugby team. What you'll hear is they're stomping their hands beating on their chests entice. On how. It's impressive to watch a Haka. Traditionally, it's not for entertainment. It's ceremonial has deep roots in multiculture. Of course, some people don't understand that and mimic anyway. A handful of Brazilian companies use the Haka in their corporate retreats. The Non Murray owner of Hakka training said he learned hawk. By watching videos of the all blacks rugby team. Another company huck Brazil performed the Haka at a Ted talks event such displays. Elijah McClain's mother says officers "murdered" my son

"Longer protesters and demonstrators and activists continue fighting for black lives. The more stories of police killings of black people seem to be coming to light and pressure is now mounting for a new investigation. Into the death of Elijah McCain. It happened after an encounter with three officers last August in Aurora, Colorado. Go to the family. The 23 year old was out buying ice tea when somebody called 911 claiming that MacLean was wearing a ski mask and quote acting weird. His family says, Yeah, he was wearing a mask, but it was to deal with social anxiety. Within 15 minutes, He was put in a chokehold and then injected with a powerful sedative. CBS's David Begnaud has the story. Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop. I have the right stuff because you're being suspicious. Rely on I'm going whole relax, or I'm going to have to change this situation. The district attorney investigating the case says that Elijah McClane dismissed the officers requests for him to stop. The 23 year olds family says he was just walking home. He was listening to music. When Aurora, Colorado police approached him last August, the D A. Says McLane was carrying a plastic bag when police tried to pat him down and he refused. He's then heard pleading with the police as they tackle him and use a choke hold on him. Paramedics later arrived at the scene. A medic gave McClane ketamine to sedate him. McLane was taken to the hospital. Three days later, he was pronounced brain dead. 10 months after McLane's death, more than two million people have signed a petition calling on Colorado officials to fire the three officers involved. So far, the Aurora Police Department has declined. CBS News is request for comment. Dave Young is the one who decided not to charge the officers were the actions of the officers justified legally. Yes, Mr Young. Do you believe there was a moment in this where the officers could have de escalated a situation? Absolutely. 100%. They could've done a 1,000,000 things different didn't need to die on and the fact that he died does not warrant the basis for criminal charges in the body camera video cops or heard saying that MacLean tried to take one of their guns. He went for his gun. Mari Newman represents McClain's family. Don't you think if you really had grab someone's gun, we would see fingerprints ended the lifted from the gun. Did you find any evidence that corroborates the officer who said he reached for the gun? I had no evidence to cut. Predict that Shin in McLean is Elijah's mother. They? They're bullies with badges. He wanted to help people. He was a massage therapist. He not only heal others that he killed himself. He was able to accept love give love various forms. According to the district attorney's report, the medical examiner was unable to determine a cause of death. It is important to note that walking around with a ski mask is not illegal, and when you go back to the 9 11 call, the caller didn't say that Elijah did anything illegal. He said. Hey, there's a guy wearing a mask. He kind of is waving his hand. Seems a little strange. You might want to check it out. He says He might be a good guy might be a bad guy. When the police responded instead of observing. Instead of watching hanging back for a bit, the police moved in immediately to stop him. And everything went self from there.

The Day was June seventeenth. Eighteenth forty-three. A clash between British emigrants and Mary known as the wire incident took place on the South Island in New Zealand. Wakefield believed that a successful colony needed to attract a balance of capitalist laborers. The company claimed to have purchased land in the Cook Strait, read and established settlements at Wellington and Nelson. While the Europeans were purchasing land in New Zealand representatives of the British Crown and Mary, Chiefs signed the Treaty of White Tonky. In May of Eighteen, Forty Lieutenant Governor William Hobson declared British authority over New Zealand. Since the Treaty of Weitang, he was signed. There has been debate over its terms, interpretations and differences between the Mary text and the text. The treaty was meant to recognize Mary ownership of their lands and give Mary people, the rights of British subjects that said many Maori were later dispossessed of their lands. Anyway the New Zealand Company promoted the country as a Briton of the south, and it began to organize large scale migration to New Zealand. But the fertile land required for all the Europeans migrating to New Zealand, did not actually exist. The company was failing. Because arable land was limited land titles were uncertain. There were two mini absentee landowners, and there was no real way to generate income through exports. By eighteen forty three, the immigrants were struggling with food supply, and the company was basically bankrupt. Throughout the early eighteen s more European, emigrants Nelson despite conflict between Mary chiefs over claims to the land being sold. But when it became clear that there was not enough arable land around Nelson for the immigrants, the company began moving forward with plans to survey the wire planes.
