"Goddamn good names. And if Mario and you hadn't been as injured and sick and dealing with illness as he was, he was when he retired the first time before he came back after several years. Mario Lemieux was, I believe, the only player to have average over two points per game throughout his entire career. Over two years. Every time he laced up the skates, he was going to Pittsburgh was going to score at least two goals off of his stick either. And then if you ever want to get the chills, you go back and watch them use first game back after the two or three years of retirement. When I think he had two goals and two assists and one of them was like a breakaway when everybody kind of liked the hype was all built up and he scored. It'll give you the fucking chills. But anyways, we're talking a lot about playoff hockey. It's not a hockey podcast, so we're not going to talk hockey. But game time is the best app. If you're looking to go to a game, I think this weekend, I'm going to be in St. Louis. I'm going to see my nephew and niche for the first time since Christmas. See a bunch of the boys. I believe I'm going to go to a blues game. I believe the way I'm going to do it is game time, which is a new ticketing app that makes it easier than ever to score. Last minute deals on tickets to sports blues will probably be up to nothing to go back to home ice, which is nice. Concert shows, they guarantee the lowest price. These guys were just at a show last week, Nate bargatze. I don't believe they needed to use game time because we're Friends with the guy, not to brag, but if you're looking to go to any show from comedy concert music, playoff hockey basketball, before you know it, which is crazy, it's going to be, I mean, we're already in baseball season, but we're going to have football things are always kind of happening. That's why they figured out the system has been figured out where there's always just some giant event coming up..

Ta boxer alex. We'd always just play games for law day exactly. Yeah that's all you hung out law day like you did nothing so i think what happens is when that's the perspective. It's easy to think what you do as a woman is much harder bag in a day when you were working on a fucking coal mine. You think the wife ever complained about what you did at work. You know what i'm saying. Yes yes. I'm sure bro. Just thought happened to know after feminism just popped up after coleman closed coal mines wife if somebody had a bigger house than her because she got pissed off and i promise. You bro also wasn't at work at all. You know who was the woman who has been in the coal mine. She was always at home. That's the thing they have. These women are working every day. They have to do everything that you're doing and still come home and take care of kids. Came home from the coal mine. Wipe the wife say take for you. Come in the house coming here dirty every day to mask thinking. Let me ask you something. Do you think that women tried to go and get all this money. Because they don't trust the guy's going to provide a protect or beat with them forever. You think she does. I think it is security. You know like last women a lot of help from families where our moms were. Single parents allow us. So we feel we ourselves you know even when we have a man we still have this little safety net like whenever you go as a woman. You're basically saying i'm giving all to you. I think we're gonna be together forever. We're gonna make this work. It's hard to do that. It's hard to say. I trust you. Holy what would you say everybody. "Point makes that play on the back check and the lighting. We're off from there. By the way turn it became the first Lightning player all time to score his first career playoff goal. In the Stanley Cup final. We talked about the stars showing up Monday nights and boy did they ever Nikita Kucherov second goal of the game he gave his team a 41 lead one for could drop high slot holes. What a face off, right. What a shot by Kucherov to its 41 Lightning. That was his third multi goal game this postseason. In 10th of his career, Kucherov became the fifth player in NHL history to register multiple 30 point playoff seasons. Joining Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Curry in Mario Lemieux. John Cooper was asked yesterday what he thought of Kucherov being on that exclusive list. Yeah, that is, it said Heavyweight the names. There's no doubt about that. What's even more impressive about it is the era. He's doing it in. We talked about it. You know, the high flying eighties and the scoring and everything went on, and it's remarkable in today's day and age, when gold scoring and Or getting points is at such a premium, and he's been able to do that. Not once, but two in a row. And I think his, you know, points per game in the playoffs, period. Even going back to 2015 is up there with all the all the big boys, and it's one thing to do once, but if you can do it over multiple playoffs, it says something special about you and your talents to be able to perform at the biggest moments and That's I think what separates the good from the great is the guys that can do in the big moments and he is certainly one of them. In the last two years have been incredible for not only coup trough, but you take a look at points and then Hedman and then Vasilevskiy your stars. Not only performing, but they're dominating. It is, John Cooper said. In an era where it's tough to score. They're making it look easy. It's obviously not. But Tampa Bay very fortunate to have that core group of players. Performing at that level. Ryan McDonagh knows his team can always count on Kucherov during these big mullets. I think he just wants to be a threat Every time he's on the ice, and like most players, right, you want to be consistent and you want to step up and be a difference maker for your team, and I think that's what really drives him is never satisfied with, you know, just making one play happen or putting one puck in the net. He knows he's put in those situations to produce. You can make a lot of guys around him better just from his play, making a bill And his finishing ability, so it takes a lot of pride and you know being that type of player force where you can make everybody around and better, obviously help our team win and great to see him continually wanting to push himself even though he's at such a high level. Now he never stops working hard and practice talking to players talking defenseman about things that he sees you. Just anytime he speaks up in the room for our group carries it on a wait and it's been great to see him continue to be a difference. Maker, night in night out And again limiting the Canadians. Just.

"It was. As, we'll see this. There's one moment to film where where there was like sort of all of a sudden that the strange people started. Basically hovering over us and then all the sudden, the police came said there was a bomb. And we had to like run out of that where we were, it was very weird, so I did feel very strange. I never felt that stranger in not that I like traveler frequently, but this time around I definitely like if very weird. You know I got a travelers visa. To get over there, you know 'cause they weren't giving i. Basically said I wasn't even sure I was going to shoot anything. You know what I'm saying, but I ended up. Getting everything I needed in that trip. Just saying I know a guy who fixes things and find people. That's scary enough for me right there. Yeah. He's not like a big heavy guy. You know, but he's more of a researcher. Right well I mean you think about the penguins at that time, darlings of hockey with Mario lemieux or Yager and the popularity they had so. You get a very interesting Hollywood type of a Canadian who loves hockey. How did Michael J. Fox tie into this? Yeah we'll Steve Tell you about a little bit more tomorrow? But basically he was. He's a huge hockey, not Michael J. back the time. It was like the biggest star in the in the World Michael J.. Mario lemieux was probably the biggest hockey player just WanNa Stanley Cup and that next year they wanted on another one. You know so these guys. They just thought that this was like a kind of a really strange fun venture. You know just like just an unprecedented period period in history. You know or this country that. Represented one thing just fell almost overnight. You know, and so they just wanted like they saw this as like Oh, wow, the red army team, holy cow like. Like this is a huge thing you know, and so they just like. They didn't know what was going on at the time. They're like all the crazy stuff was happening. They just thought. Okay I'll be a part of this. How much would you say? Is this a window into the passing? Wow, when communism ended, it sure was. Sure was crazy, but then how much of it is still exactly the same today? Yeah that's a good question I mean. I think that. You know they're. They're starting things that just don't go away overnight. You know like the mentality of the people. The systems the the way things are done over there. You know yeah. kind of communism collapsed, and it's no longer than kind of ideology, but it's still. Kind of authoritarian right now you know because you've got one guy that calls the shots right, and and and and also the laws, and the way that the court system is right now is a little bit I. I don't know how to describe it. Odd where it's not as reliable I. Think in the US. We also have our problems by the way with the judicial system, but anyway. It's it's. It's not as lawless where you have the kind of gangsters and mafia guys running everywhere like in the nineties, but that's kind of cleaned up, but it's like it's become kind this new system of strange corruption, where and really kind of if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time or Piss off the wrong guy you're you're you're in trouble, you know I think the concept can be stronger than in the US. You know violent means that yeah. And we got about a minute left. If you flew back there today, everybody's cool with you. Best kind of I don't want that to be my last words.

Horse Owned By Victor Martinez Headed For Kentucky Derby
"We've seen some professional athletes. Those who bring in big money branch out into ownership after their playing days are over. Mario lemieux has won. Three Stanley Cup says owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins after leading them to two as a player. Magic Johnson Nolan Ryan and Warrick Dunne are among those who at one time co own the teams they once played for then there's Michael Jordan and Carolina David Beckham. Who's Inter- MIAMI. Mls team just began. Play this year and Lebron James who owns a piece of Liverpool in the English premier league who are among other athletes who have become owners. Then there's Victor Martinez a five time all star catcher and designated hitter primarily with the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers. He decided on ownership to and now. He has a chance to win his sports. Ultimate prize shot pin Geir Mo going after the leaders and goes tencent on the outside and Paco Lopez sets him down for the driving. He's picking up versus one by one but meanwhile upfront at fifty to one of King Gary Mode now going to aid. Here's pink derm O- on the outside trying to follow your gut. Said Chan said is home on the outside inside the final furlong. Do you believe this king at forty nine to one. He doesn't just want it. He wins it off in press. I cannot think of a former professional athlete. Who owned or co owned a Kentucky Derby winner? Maybe you can. Please let me know but Victor Martinez has a chance to be something of a trailblazer and we are fortunate enough to welcome Victor Martinez for the First Time. Here to investigate. What was it like for you that day? It was crazy it was crazy man with a lot of stuff that we were just praying that you know he likes the door he likes the dirt and then you know I remember having my wife be right beside on my right and You know the final stretch. She kids saying we won. We won and I was like no. You know we still. It's still a race to go super race to go. And she was like we weren't we weren't and then we. I think we're the only people in the race track that was jumping and screaming because he was forty nine to one You know we have gone through a you know a lot of stuff with him. You know special. Because what he's made he's He's debut he may He's view in fighting. Hafer loans on dirt right so you know He. He came out of the big favourite of the race. You know because of these workers stuffing You know it was a fourteen horse. Feel and he ended up seeks to raise so it was Kinda. You know disappointed but we were happy. I mean as a family have my whole family there. We'll have a great time and that was what it's all about. I was I was trying to do that to have with my family but you know I remember the trainer. One Carlos was very very disappointed about his performance. He was you know what I'm saying. I'm sorry I don't know what happened. That was like don't worry about it. I mean we have a great time. You know we have a lot of people came to us and say that king a year is a terrific guy. He got a racer grass so well we decided to give him a chance on on on turf grass and we put him on a mile rate. You got a king gear. Mouse can gear midway on. The turn is opened up. A six length advantage gear comes into the stretch with a seven length. Lead Kozel Listrik Joe. Second third but king who they gotta catch can gear ball popular. Victory here can gear them out by about eight legs so we were like okay. I think he he liked turfing. You know we put him on another race. These these time was the steak then. He came third. So you know He. He lost the race in the final four lawn. Something like that and You know he he make another another big race but I still have my dream united. See how my dream from like my Kentucky Derby horsing. I told the trainer one time I told him Carl listen. I think he deserved one. More shot on dirt. So let's put him on one more time and but Lisa he's not gonNA raise any those leader races. Let's put him on a raise. That point to the Kentucky and he looked at me and he was agreed. We put him on the temporary. We you know we went out there to try. Try Him on again. And then we came out with spider it every now you talked about your trainer Juan Carlos Ave line. You're rider Sammy. Camacho are not that well known on the national thoroughbred racing scene they like you are Venezuelan. Had you thought about going with a more well-established trainer and rider to prepare for the Kentucky? Derby Nope nope they put him in the Kentucky every day going with him to the Kentucky Derby. That's how it works for me.

"Business of sports from Bloomberg radio with scouts arsenic Michael Barr and Evan nobody William thanks for joining us let's continue our conversation with former NHL player Jeff Hamilton the teams I forgot that he was with I forgot it was with the New York Islanders I remember he was with the Chicago Blackhawks Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina hurricanes and you're just now learning because I told you he coached the Connecticut junior Rangers Jackson my son's team to the championship of the prestigious retirement and admitted eight no bar Jeff give us a send a better sense of how the business operation of your team works how many teams are under the junior Rangers umbrella we have about twenty five teams in the winter twenty five teams in the spring and we have I don't know the exact number but we have maybe eight to ten professional coaches maybe more now twelve professional coaches and then we have you know certain my parents coaches and my myself I'm included a parent coach so I I my philosophy is it's not better to have a parent coaches out there to have a coach it's the best coach know that you can find you guys have some good ones right you're not the only former NHL player that is this is a call from a coaching standpoint correct we we have you know Chris your use you know obviously with the Rangers now it Marty St Louis helps us out we have Iran John Haggerty that that that both played at a high level I mean the list goes on and on of of guys that Jimmy ankle whose are junior coach the played professionally in college hockey and if you go down are listed in the majority of guys you're either a long time professional coaches are I have played college and or pro so it's it's a good mix it's a good balance and and it's sometimes it's it's nice to have a parent coach because he's obviously more invested just in you know in the day to day stuff because the other kids there you know but we've we've done a great job finding local pro coaching talent that that has really you know driven our our success where does the money come in here obviously fees for for from parents for for their kids to join the team you also mentioned donations and others kind of the two main buckets for for how you know we're revenue comes from for the Rangers correct and we we do camps and try outs and and stuff like that that that helps with the helps with the revenue and and yeah we do we do camps you know and I can't throughout the summer we do we'll do some extra stuff during the spring but that's that's the two main buckets here is there is there Marchioness I actually then there's merchandisers my wallet to confirm there is more we did actually opened up opened up a shop back a couple years ago the kind of taken on a life of its own money let me tell you I happen to be friendly with me check it's who's the founder and CEO of roan have a pop up shop in Chelsea piers in Stamford and I talked to him awhile back about perhaps sponsoring Jackson's team his his winter team what about the thought of because of the the exposure that these programs get is there value in companies attaching their brands to CJ are timid Fairfield to those premium brands in youth hockey is their sponsorship opportunity there is in an excellent example of that is is the Pittsburgh Penguins elite organization a pot I actually talked to the guy that set up the department with Dick's sporting goods and they want from they found a rapid growth in Pittsburgh both numbers and talent and through Dicks and I think the Mario Lemieux I don't want to misrepresent what they're doing but Mario Lemieux had some kind of foundation where they match whatever Dick's sporting goods adds to the the yearly donation and or sponsorship and they their numbers have gone through the roof the tuition is drop by forty or fifty percent people get discounted Dick's sporting goods for you know equipment and stuff like that so I think it's been a huge win for their program and I don't know how that affects decks but it it definitely looks good on them that that their partner with the Pittsburgh Penguins elite and they're doing such a great job so there's definitely room for that we've explored it but I just going back to the the one man band here it's tough to say I'm gonna drive that lasted until you're right here on the air I am going to drive that bus but yes it is definitely an opportunity in something that we've explored briefly and and kinda lately but but it's worked other places and you got you know honey baked in you got a little Caesars and you got the you know all these other Chicago mission that have done similar things so it's out there yes you're obviously familiar with kind of the the fight going on right now for for college athletes trying to get a piece of the the money that they generate you know obviously you're talking in your youth sports are nowhere near that level yet but but as we talk about you know merchandise and sponsorships and you know if you're the little the World Series there's already media rights coming in do you think we're gonna ever reach a point where you know that there there's talk of two parents or two kids for for their participation as as the commercialization aspect rises in the U. in the US market yeah I am a you know that that's a great question I I I wouldn't begin to know the answer to that I I would say with the social media presence I think there's opportunities for and you see you see some you know if your call social media stars little kids and and and all sports that I believe are making money off of you know you two videos on Twitter post based on the followers and all that stuff so there is no there is something there as far as on a mass scale I don't know that's who knows that's a great question I don't know I like this question about TV right side I mean right now you you will see a game like this on your local cable channel will that expand one day because of youth sports I would also I I I think the break is is is an exceptionally well run tournament it's broadcasted professionally it's the play by play guys are very enthusiastic and and call a good game and I think people would love another viewership numbers just on the on the on line feed but I I think that tournament itself is right for for you know being a smaller version of the Little League World Series of hockey my I think that this could be contraction there but I think live barn is also trying to fill that void my bars as an online streaming of of all games Yutaka games so there might eventually be some kind of channel linked into that I don't know but there's definitely a market for it I mean with with the travel and everything involved you know more more family members get an opportunity to watch their the killings and their sons and daughters and yeah I definitely think there's something there all right that's just Hamilton program director of the Connecticut junior Rangers Jeff thanks so much for taking sometime thank you Sir thank you all right we got it I am so excited that we're seeing of former player professional player working with youth and Scott as you know I mean this guy sounds super I have nothing but accolades for him it was a fantastic experience not only because the one but the way Jeff handled the kids and really need that made them feel special and that he cared about them that that was my take away from the tournament from this interview I love the craziness of the parents it I mean I live it but for the coach to say that you know they need to get their heads on straight because I know so many kids who are and this is not just hockey this not just what I see everyday you read the basketball star in ESPN where these injuries the over use injuries parents get a grip your kid does not need to be doing this specializing in one sports seven days a week three hundred sixty five days it's not good for the body it's not good for the mind I'm struck by how professional this is a live you know that he you know the generators employ coaches they have trainers they have a five oh one C. three they take donations they give scholarships and as you said as you heard him talk about they are exploring partnerships and sponsorships they have merchandise there are teams out there and and Little League World Series is a good example the has media rights this is easy and tell you this is gonna be on TV all of this starts to look a lot like college sports or even professional sports editor Jeff Kessler online one it's amazing how how how commercialized this whole endeavor is and I was serious when I asked him I do wonder if they reach a point where kind of the conversations are hearing in college sports eventually trickle their way down to use for their I say pay me yeah.

"Who had an older brother who played peewee hockey or anything like that. But Wayne Gretzky made me a hockey fan. He was larger than life. He was bigger than the sport. He was the rare NHL celebrity. He was in underwear commercials and on Saturday Night, Live and. He was just. It was him and everybody else with the policies, I guess to Mario Lemieux. But like that guy. Made the NHL relevant. Really since Gretzky's retirement. The NHL has fallen back into the natural order of things. It's clearly the fourth of the four major sports in the United States with apologies. To those listening up in Canada today like. It was a more relevant sport here. When Wayne Gretzky was playing for the Los Angeles Kings and getting them to the Stanley Cup. Final. Tiger woods. Same deal. Tiger woods. Burst onto the scene wins the nineteen Ninety-seven masters. Suddenly, I'm begging my mom, I'm asking her to sign me up for golf lessons. I'm waking up on Saturday mornings. I'm putting in our foyer. I'm taking like a building block like something that I would make. I'd make like I dunno castles and crap out of and I'm using that as a whole, and I'm putting at it. And I would have I didn't grow up in a family that was going to the country club during the summer, and there's no silver spoons in our household and Tiger Woods got me into golf briefly. And I think Zion might be doing the same thing for you. Whether I'm not. You have to be about your childhood or your formative years. But maybe it is if you're a parent you've got a kid that's getting sucked into it and excited about it because of Zion or maybe you were a casual college basketball fan or didn't care about the sport. And now you find yourself watching the NC double A tournament. Because you can't keep your eyes off this guy. We love we love the next big thing. We love to get in on the cutting room floor at the basement level on greatness. And I think a lot of us believe we're watching that before our very eyes with Zion. Williamson holy crap. What do incredible once in a lifetime kind of cut from a different cloth athlete? I don't want to miss out on it. The NC double A tournament. There's a reason why CBS Turner spend billions of dollars to air it. People come at the beginning of the tournament for the upsets, and they come for the brackets, and they've got their sheet of paper with coffee stains it and crossed out teams because you picked your you made a last second change, and you got highlighter marks on it is you match your picks up against the ones you got wrong. And you'll you're into the tournament the first couple of days, it's an excuse to call off from work. More an excuse to take a long lunch. And then the interest in the NC double A tournament generally fades by now. In at this point, the elite eight usually you're watching for a couple of reasons. You're watching because you're one of the few who has a bracket still intact and your pool is still alive. You've got money on it. You've got skin in the game. Or your team is still playing. So if there's like a. A bandwagon team one. That has a lot of fans everywhere like a Duke or even a Kentucky. You're watching your team. But outside of that like the NC double A tournament. Is one of the rare sporting events. I think where the interest wanes it would be like if the masters if the opening round on Thursday was more popular than than the Sunday. Then the final round. That you had this inverse situation where you get all this basketball. It's like binging on it Thursday and Friday, and you're stuffed. By the time. You get to the second week or even the final four. But it's my contention that Zion. Is reversing that in. It's my position without having talked to you about it yet. That he is growing the sport in its temporary. Right. It might be temporary might be fleeting today. Could be as last game. That's very possible that they could lose to Michigan state. That's not insane. That's not like I think the line for the game is Duke favored by one and a half this easily could be as last game. But maybe. Maybe he turns you into.

Your Dickerson in myself. Wow there and this was a couple years ago. But after that I convinced Eric to drive to Columbus with me. Right. And we played 'field SC was playing Ohio State. So and it was like the perfect. You know, it's like man, we gotta take advantage of this. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's how long would drive. Oh, I think it's just a couple of hours on my the interesting thing is when I look back, and I'm laughing at this. You have no idea my appetite for God. And how early I get up in the morning. And I will drive three hours to to play with my friends and then try three hours back. I mean, people think we're crazy crazy and obsessed and it's it's. I think we are. Yes. But say advertised, I say addiction. What golf is get that bug. It gets in you because you know, this is one you were you were. In a Super Bowl. And you were as close to perfect as there could be we play a sport that we all know it's impossible to be perfect. But man, we're going to be out there. It's fifty degrees outside overcast and blowing thirty and you're on the range for what two and a half three hours after playing in the morning. You know it. It's something about you know, plane sports, you know, it's almost like poetry in motion and stuff like that. If you really good at what you do. You don't even think about it. It's just like the height of. You know of being instinctive, you know, and I've always said if if somewhere someone were to ask you a question about what were you thinking on that play? And if a running back actually said, well, I was thinking about doing this and think about doing that. It's BS. They lie line. The honest answers. I don't know just happened. Right. But with golf balls stagnant right there. It's not moving and the amazing thing, you know, just from a mental standpoint is when the balls night there, you can complete you swing? You can get in the proper positions. Do all that. There's no question Boone that ball white little montier addressed that ball, and you hit it sort of got one aggressive genie your body. I should say one. But if you have, you know, especially playing football, and you and you forceful in strong. Oh, it's it is the worst thing for you. You can't help. I mean, I wish I could swing seventy percent. That's why we were so fascinated on the range watching the LPGA a pros. Their remarkable amazing. Yeah. Doesn't seem like they're hitting the ball anywhere. And you look up and it's like one beautiful. Shot after another great trajectory. Effortle-? It looks like look like they're not even trying. They're real swings. Our practice wings a single in my practice wing. And I wish that. Worsted? I could you know, I Meyer them so much because. If we weren't if anyone really wants to learn how to play golf they should look at J players. They really should. So what was your what's your best score? Seventy-one where did you shoot? It.
