A highlight from LGM Podcast: Pennant Races Wind Down

"Well, let's go. Here you have your money. You want... $10 ,000? Yes, the services, hamburgers, salads, pasta, lamb, and when you buy a house, you're suspended from your car, and you have work to do. And that's all you need to do to have a DUI. Well, and what do you want? A propane? Don't pay the price of your money, you can't sell it. Don't pay the price of your money, you can't sell it. Also, all of the marketing possibilities with your home team. Hello, and welcome to the Lawyers, Guns, and Money podcast. This is Eric Loomis, and I'm here with Rob Farley and Scott Lemieux to discuss the general state of sports right now, particularly baseball, probably a little bit of football. Gentlemen, how are you all doing? Very well. There's also an obscure politically relevant hockey topic I could bring up too. We could always talk hockey around here, which might be more of a monologue for you, but hey, that's... Hockey and racism. That's the game on ice. But it's been a lot since we talked about sports here. Right now, it's August 30th is when we're recording this, and baseball is reaching its pennant races, or playoff races I guess is more appropriate these days. They're very interesting this year. Particularly, I think we should start with the official or unofficial perhaps team of LGM, which is our Seattle Mariners. So, what a run for the Mariners, and I was wondering what thoughts you guys had about what's going on here and maybe talk about the ALS generally. Well, as Eric and I, I don't know how many times I had this conversation earlier this summer, I was just brimming with confidence about the Mariners, particularly that offense. Every time Dylan Moore came up in a big spot, it was just great. No, I was... I was kind of on the fence. I know on our major league preview, Dave was pretty optimistic, and then I think the rest of us were like, consciously optimistic, but perhaps a little more skeptical, and I think I might have been the most skeptical. And then really for the first half of the year, the team was actually worse than even I had anticipated. Good pitching, but just really desultory offense. Particularly with Julio being a little off, and there's not just much else going on. The Mariners having their annual second base disaster, the curse of Sean Figgins, showing up in Colton Wong. What was his final slashline? It was genuinely horrific. Yeah, like I just... And one thing to see, Jesse Winkers also on his way out of the league. You know, so it ended up being kind of a wash no trade, but boy what a disaster it was. I mean, it was not a bad move. I mean, yeah, so he had a 241 on base, 227 slugging. And one year ago, he slugged 430, and the year before that, 447. I don't know what it is that happens when the something about the Mariners and second base are not mixed. And Adam Frazier was awful for us last year, has been a perfectly competent member of the Orioles this year. So I don't know what's going on there. But anyway, and it's weird that the team almost turned around when they released Wong, not saying he was the only problem there. But you know, and what's interesting is that the pitching staff has been excellent all year. And I think that the Mariners rotation has been top three in ERA all season. And I believe they're now first in the majors in the ERA. I may be wrong, but it's close, if not so. Really, really strong rotation led by Castillo. Scott's surveys always has good bowl pens. And one thing is that they were able to use their annual pump and dump, sort of creating a closure out of Paul Siewald and trading that for a couple of useful depth pieces that they really needed, even though they've had a little bit of problem in the back end. So yeah, it's surprising, obviously led by Rodriguez. But obviously, it's been really encouraging how they've played over the last couple of months. And it would be nice if they could win the series against the A's as the rubber match is ongoing as they speak. But yeah, it's been pretty exciting over the last month. And I'm looking forward to going back to the park. I mean, it's interesting. I think that when they traded Siewald, it was sort of like, well, what really is Dominic Canzone and Josh Rojas? I mean, they seem like a couple of marginal players and they actually played pretty well, both of them in Seattle. But I mean, it seemed like what they did ultimately was just give him, give service a lot more platoon options and a lot more mix and match stuff that he's been using at the back end of the lineup so that if it makes sense to go more or Matt Ford or Caballero, then that's fine. But Cade Marlowe has been a pretty good call up. And then Canzone and Rojas, I mean, that's a lot of options, each of which is functional to slightly more than functional in the right circumstance against the right pitchers. And I think that makes a lot of sense. And then, you know, Telenik will get, you know, should be back here for whatever that's going to really be given that he was, after that good start with sort of sliding back into his usual suckiness as the season went on. But they should have a lot of options in September. So I think it'll be, you know, I like the way the team sort of made moves mid -year to change its construction, even though, as you say, is Munoz really a reliable closer? Well, it's been a couple of times where it doesn't seem to such so. But, you know, but you certainly have to like where the team is in a three -way tie for the West with cratering a Rangers team and an Astros team that, of course, is going to remain competitive, but has its own flaws. Yeah, I mean, this is this is such a remarkably interesting division, right? I mean, and, you know, one of these teams is not going to go to the playoffs, right? I mean, we're operating in the assumption we're going to have a division winner. We're going to have, you know, one of the teams is probably going to be the wild card, but one of them is not going to go to the playoffs. Well, no, no, because there's three wild card teams now. Is it three wild card teams now? Yeah, so Toronto, I mean, you know, somebody's going to be out, but it could be, it could be the Blue Jays. Oh, okay. You see, I was this was a rules update that I was unaware of. But, yeah, the season ended today. Seattle, Texas, and Houston would all be in and the Blue Jays are actually three and a half games behind the Astros. So that's they're actually have work to do. Yeah, that's that's actually quite interesting in terms of the National League as well. But I think the more critical point about this particular division is that, you know, you have you have one of the worst rosters in the history of baseball in this division. And I would I would hazard that the Oakland A's are not the biggest train wreck in this division, right? I mean, I think that the the Angels, you know, are having one of these catastrophic seasons that even though they're not going to end up the worst team in this division because of the A's, you know, this is this is a sort of great train wreck of a team in terms of its wasted potential, catastrophic its complete use of two of the biggest stars, two of the most talented players, not just in Major League Baseball, but in baseball around the world.

He's experiencing mild symptoms, according to governor's the office. Just the night before testing positive, Inslee had received the updated vaccine booster, but at that he point had already been exposed. The governor will continue working, taking meetings virtually. Pushing against back cold and flu season has another layer to consider the presence of COVID -19. Northwest News Radio's John Lobertini reports. COVID -19, I think, has segued into becoming an endemic. Strong words from Dr. Michael Garko, a nutritionist and an expert on the immune system. Meaning that it will appear regularly, and I think it's going to be doing that every year with cold viruses and flu viruses. Cold season showed up in August, a wave of flu expected in October, but COVID -19 raises familiar some red flags. Heart trouble or having kidney problems. And other pre -existing conditions like obesity, high blood pressure, and age. Even one health condition increased the odds of people having a more difficult time. Focusing on diet, Garko says, staying hydrated, sleeping, and less stress help. But herbal products that support the immune system. They're all liquids, cold storm, travel bug, and smooth oregano drops. Take them individually or in combination. Never hurts to keep washing your hands and paying attention to crowds. Following a federal judge's ruling that Washington's new legislative district takes away Latino's voting power, Republican lawmakers want a special session so bipartisan the redistricting commission can redraw the map. Moses Lake Deputy Mayor Deanna Martinez and more conservative Latino officials from that area to ensure they still have a voice as they claim liberal insiders from Western Washington brought the lawsuit to oust Republican State Senator Nikki Torres by changing district. her It sounds like this lawsuit wants to take our conservative voice away. The governor and legislative Democrats say they won't call a special session with leaders from both houses saying it is quicker and non -political for the court to redraw district lines. The growth of commercial spaceflight opens up opportunities for zero g scientific research. So a local doctor says we need solid rules. research ethics Northwest News Radio's Ryan Harris has the story. A panel that included UW Medicine neurology professor Michael Williams concluded that anyone who volunteers for human research in space should be able to decide where they'll participate, that any risk should be reasonable, and that there should be limits on incentives versus risk. Williams says that research should also benefit everyone. And by having larger numbers of research subjects we have better a opportunity to get good results and to see something that may bring benefit to people on earth. Williams says he's learned things spinal in his fluid pressure research he'd never have considered in earthbound patients. And there's lots of different areas of physiology and anatomy and so forth where we've discovered how things work differently in space and that helps us to understand disorders better on earth. The panel also said that since space flight is a valuable opportunity any research on commercial flight should be of the highest scientific excellence. Ryan Harris Northwest News Radio. A new study finds simple scents the kind you get from essential oils in a diffuser while while sleeping might be just what the doctor ordered to improve memory and thinking skills. Medical reporter Liz his bonus explains. It's all because as Tony, our essential oil demonstrator here at Ohio's Christ Hospital the Alliance Integrative Medicine Center shows us scents such as this one which happens to be Green provides a powerful pull on the brain. So everybody has probably experience had the of smelling something and having a very specific memory of a certain time or place and we can tap into that natural communication between our nose and our memory. Women's health specialist Dr. Colleen Swayze told me it's all part of a practice which uses essential oils from plants for something called aromatherapy. So aromatherapy is using scents to help improve emotional balance. In this study published in frontiers in neuroscience researchers put a different fragrance every night in the rooms of people ages 60 and older while they were sleeping. They all had experienced some level of cognitive decline. They left that scent on for two hours. They then compared brain the power or what they called cognitive capacity over time to a control group. And after six months the participants who had the active arm of the study actually had 226 % greater cognitive function than the people who use the placebo. The takeaway from all this Dr. Swayze says is that any scent appears to help although lavender and rosemary are linked to relaxation and you can do this at home with any product that produces scent from real essential oils while you sleep which takes no additional time. By alternating the scent each night it kind of helps with that nose blindness that sometimes you'll develop if you smell the same smell all the time. This research team says next they'd like to develop a scent that might stop memory decline. A scent based on this research for home use expected to be lost as early as this fall. A medical reporter list bonus. The Food and Drug Administration is sending warning letters to several infant formula manufacturers. The agency says inspections found safety violations at Byheart, Mead Johnson Nutrition and Parago, Wisconsin. There are towns and landmarks across the northwest that feature very unique names sometimes not so sensitive names that we've had to change over the years. As Northwest News Radio's Brian Calvert shares Sometimes there's a very good story behind where the names come from. There is a fish beautiful fish For this story we're on a lake in the Oregon Cascades our tour guide. So I'm Jeff Ziller I am the district fish biologist for the upper Willamette district for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. This particular lake isn't really large about two acres in size and at its deepest point it's maybe 18 feet but man is it full of fish. Oh that's one of our little For more than a century the Department of Fish and Wildlife has been stocking up to 400 small lakes up in the Cascade Mountain Range which is a great jump off point for the story of how this particular lake got its unconventional name. Let's just say when it came to originally stocking the water with fish this lake was a further bit down the list. There's another lake nearby that looks similar. It got fish first then in 1963 it was this lake's turn to be stocked. The only directions they had were a map and probably an aerial photograph so that they can take a look and say well yeah that must at. be As the first load of young fish was prepped to be placed in this body of water one of the wildlife workers noticed something. Then a second glance would reveal something was already living in

Arcia drives in go-ahead run in 7th as Braves beat rookie Miller, Mariners 6-2

"Atlanta Braves scored a pair of runs in the 7th, three more on the 8th for a 6 two come from behind victory over the Seattle Mariners. Brave starter Bryce elder held Seattle in check until the braves bats came alive, elder gave up just two runs over 6 innings. There's always that kind of peace of mind, you know. You're never out of it. You know, as long as you keep it close, we're always gonna have a chance. Marcelo zuna led the braves attack driving in three runs while man Olson drove in a pair with a double and a solo home run. Mariners starter Bryce Miller also had a solid outing going 6 and a third, giving up three runs and striking out four. Gary mckillop's Atlanta

"Four AP sports I'm geffen cool ball, the Seattle kraken aren't done yet after forcing a decisive game 7th correspondent Jim Bernard reports, the Seattle kraken, even their best of 7 playoff series with the Dallas stars at three games apiece with a 6 three victory. The kraken took control early and jumped to a four one lead minutes into the second period. Jordan Everly had two goals and one assist for the game. We played aggressive. I think that's what we had to do. I mean, you don't want to come out in these situations and sit back and go into the summer wondering why. In the NBA, the Phoenix Suns fired Monty Williams on Saturday two years after reaching the NBA Finals in a year after he was the overwhelming choice as the coach of the year. Phoenix was eliminated from the playoffs Thursday after a 25 point home loss against Denver in the Western Conference semifinals. Major League Baseball, a big day for Bo Bichette led the Blue Jays past the braves 5 to two correspondent John leatherbee reports the shet knocked in a pair of runs, including the go ahead in the 7th inning against the NL east leaders. A lot of really good teams we have to play. So yeah, I mean, it's good, but we've got another one tomorrow and we need to finish strong and get ready for the next one. Dylan cease taught 6 scoreless innings to help the White Sox top the Astros three to one. Really great. Finally, I think some of the work going into it paid off. So anytime you get a win and hold them scoreless, it's fantastic. Other American League winners, the Orioles rangers Yankees twins, Mariners and guardians. In the national league, Colorado Rockies pitcher Ryan feltner was struck in the head by a line drive in the second inning against the Philadelphia Phillies, but was able to walk off the field on his own. The Phillies were 7 to four winners. Other NL results, the Dodgers won their fourth in a row four to two over the Padres. The brewers diving backs, reds and cardinals were also victorious, Metz nationals was suspended by rain, and engulfed Austin and China's Marty Doe are seeking a first PGA Tour victory as they share the third Brown lead at 16 under with Ryan Palmer at the Byron Nelson in Texas. "Time champion, even longer broadcast and career 23 World Series called. I think I missed my Carver's prime as a broadcaster. People who heard him in the 80s rave about how insightful he was and Prussian. In later years, when I heard him, I was not enamored of him at the time, and yet just as with the late Joe Morgan, they formed a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood and my baseball education. So I'm grateful to them for that. They have sort of warm fond memories of them now that I might not have expected 20 plus years ago when I found them frustrating at times the late great roger angel wrote about Carver a couple of times and when mccarver was retiring from national broadcast, angel wrote Tim's intense intelligent, deeply informed, excitable verbose folksy intellectual opinionated and morally fervid participation in the events on the field inexorably takes hold of you the listener and pushes you into the adjoining seat where you can almost feel the Carver's jostling elbow and feel on your arm and elbow the heat of his eagerness for what's coming next into also added true their big cup little stretches of time when you really want to have Kim shut up and sit back. But as he also observed, he has been the exception, the strong flavor in a profession too often marked by blandness and cliche. Farewell to Tim mccarver, who in his broadcasting and his writing and other venues taught a ton of people how to watch and appreciate baseball. Also, in case you missed it, fan graphs added Negro league stats to its website this week. So I will link to where you can find those on the show page. These have already been available at seam heads and baseball reference, but to have them at fan crafts is great, didn't want to neglect that wonderful addition to the site and I do have one amendment to make to something I said earlier this week, two episodes ago, I talked about a 1937 proposal in the sporting news to use cameras to take pictures of, say, close plays at first base, and then develop them as quickly as possible, kind of like a photo finish at a racetrack. And so I was joking about having a bang bang play at first and then waiting ten to 15 minutes to develop the film so that you could get a look at whether the runner was safe or not. Well, prompted by an email from listener Peter and also some of my own research. I will note that it actually would have been possible to get those photos ready more quickly because that proposal was made, I believe, in September of 1937, and in late July of 1937, there was a historic advancement made in racetrack photo finishes, which could be what prompted that suggestion in the sporting news. Bacon Crosby, who later became co owner of the Pittsburgh pirates, was a founding partner of the del mar thoroughbred club, which operated from the del mar racetrack in del mar California, and when it opened in 1937, July 31st, it employed an innovative kind of camera, a strip camera developed by Lorenzo del riccio, who is an engineer for Paramount Pictures, which used a vertical slit that focused solely on the finish line and moved at the same speed as the horses, so you could get a clear image and also an image of the horses at the right part of the track. And in most cases, results could be determined in under a minute as a makeshift dark room was also located in the stands. So there you go, as of mid 1937, perhaps it would have been viable to use a similar method to judge umpires calls on a baseball field and get a prompt result. Under a minute, that might be faster than some replay reviews. Don't want to impugn the photographic technology of the late 1930s. Our next preview episode will feature the brewers and the Marlins, so that will lead off next week. For now, you

"Of years and kind of motivated to make some changes about so if you have a healthy season for him where he is able to be active for three, four months at a time, I think he emerges as kind of a very viable ethnic guy that makes you think about putting one of those other right handed relievers in the closer role at being pretty squared away, but so yeah, hi at him, I would say I've been unreasonably high on Jimmy Lambert, his entire career. But he's someone that they basically finally gave the ghost on trying to starting him last season because of the bullpen need the head and his metrics weren't the greatest he kind of held his own, but it's someone I've always felt like had four pitches that would work at a pretty kind of any setting and I think there are moments last year before maybe he dealt with some erratic stuff at the end of the season where it looked like somebody would be a vile or lever. So I think that gives them a little bit more medium leverage beyond just the names that are known before you start talking about more of the camp flyers or the rule 5 pick that the Niko villa who might make the team and maybe guys that you're not as comfortable as elevating the high leverage. But I think they have four or 5 guys in there that generally they're comfortable going with a lady in a situation without Hendrix. So I guess the big positional questions would be second base and right field rate and they've been questions for a while. The White Sox have the worst second base projection of any team. They have the second worst right field projection of any team and they had one of the least productive outfields and most defensively limited outfields in baseball last season. To the mix and you're getting some of the more defensively limited guys out of the outfield. There's Oscar colossus. There's Gavin sheets, is there going to be some sort of acquisition still at either of these positions and if not how do you see them shaking out? Everything's pretty clear for the idea that Oscar koalas is going to take over as the starting right Fielder as soon as possible and certainly long term. That was pretty much a messaging from the GM meeting set. They were not going to go out and get a right Fielder, but basically clear the way for coalesce. I think if you struggles, or if there are certain match ups they like, even though they're both left handed, you might see cabbage sheets doing a little bit of right field or I certainly think against left handers they could match up where they sit colas and put alloy out there for his day or two in right field, but it's pretty much banked on the idea that coal is major league ready and could be kind of a probably more power over hit, especially as a rookie, but someone who obviously can defend the position and it's more of a natural outfielder than any other candidate they've had out there for a couple of years now. At second base, they have been kind of, it's definitely been the place where they've been more active in trade talks and rickon definitely indicated that the door is not closed in that entirely at any point, but it gets certainly less likely as the season draws here and they've been slowly popping up as the person that they would, you know, he spent, I feel like half of this coaching staff under a pedigree follows off from Miami. So Romain Gonzales out there, he worked with their new field coordinator Mike toes are all winter. He's someone they've been. They kind of gave a strange amount of heavy plane time to when they were still fighting for their playoff spot. Last year, even when they sell at Josh Harrison, it's someone they kind of believe in, even though last season was very much a wash and at this point his major league statistics look like somebody who has a lot of plate discipline issues and we'll have trouble getting on base. This is kind of the organizationally they've kind of searched for power whenever they can find it and after he had kind of his breakout 20 or 21 season where he showed like this 2020 power and speed combination that they've been optimistic on, it seems like they're in a position right now to more or less hand on the second base job with Lenin Sosa kind of heavy outside chance of resting away with the big spring training. I don't want to give short shrift to arguably their largest off season edition not in terms of his stature, but in terms of the size and length of his contract, which is Andrew benintendi, and I'm curious, how did they settle on Ben Andy as their guy? Because it's not that he had a bad season last year, you know, at least at the plate he had his highest WRC plus since that really great 2018 campaign with Boston, but like the defense seems like it's slipping and there's never been a ton of power, but he does get on base at a good clip. He got more money than I anticipated him getting and not just because everyone seemed to get more money than I anticipated them getting in this off season. So how'd they land on Ben and tendi and what are they? What are they expecting out of him? I mean, you say settling on Ben attende. I would say completing when was he drafted? 2015. So 8 years of thirsting after him. He was taking one spot ahead of Carson fulmer and they were definitely kind of waiting for him to maybe dangle down. I don't think it's the right verb. But moving on. They wanted him in the Chris sale trade way back when, you know, late 2016, talked about him at the deadline last year. This is someone they've kind of lusted after, which, again, does not feel like a good person. This is someone they want it for a long time. Definitely believe in his skill set beyond just, you know, professional singles hitter. They think his power will probably play a little bit better. Sure. At a sneaky great park for lift handed power, which you wouldn't know because of white sacks haven't really had much. Rhett more than to play the coffin stadium. They're absolutely the number of times I've heard Andrew Ben and senator referred to as a gold love left Fielder, since he signed, would lead me to believe that they view him as bit rosier than someone who's defenses is slipping based on some metrics of recent. This is someone they view as kind of like this really good overall null player. I would say he got more years than I expected more than maybe the AAV. That's really how they're able to separate their offer from the Yankees and also not go over a big AAV since they did a lot of work talking about how little budget room they had going into the off season. So I think it kind of threaded the needle for them a little bit of they didn't have to give this is what somebody had to give 20, $25 million a year or two. But he was young enough that maybe you don't feel as queasy as giving him 5 seasons. This is someone they view as like the do everything good at everything type of guy. He's not a stud power here. He's not necessarily someone that you thought is going to hit compete for the Benny tenant island. Maybe a two 82 90 projection is more reasonable take for him, but if you miss not having a major weakness and if there's something that's been an issue for White Sox position players, especially when they're being thrown out to play left field when they're first baseman or it's that they have some kind of clearing weakness that makes their strengths kind of get canceled out

"And I expect another big jump this year and ticket sales as long as they continue to be good throughout the season because it's a pretty good group in terms of people have identified with them. They like them. A lot of the personalities and I mean like Julio just is a draw. People just like I haven't when I was a kid in 94, you know, I think it was an 8th grade or as in high school 94 95, but even when I was a kid in 8th grade, I remember going to see griffey as a rookie and just what the number of little kids that were there. And like this year, this past year, you just can't, I couldn't believe the amount of young kids I saw back at the park all were in Julio jerseys or following Julio. Everything about Julio, like that guy, that kid has captured that whole area, like the way he's gone about everything. And so it's just, there's kind of been this renaissance of baseball excitement, but it's an excitement around having that superstar. He's locked in and unlike griffey, I think he's a lot more comfortable with it, but that charisma and everything like you just can't help but be drawn into him and you're just seeing it all over like kids all over in Julio gear. You just see it. Like when I was at the airport a few weeks ago going to Mexico, I just noticed there were kids all over and they're all wearing Julio stuff, you know, a Mariners hat and stuff. And you didn't see that for a while. I mean, I've been out in the in Tacoma areas since 2006. And that hadn't always been readily available. And to see kind of the boom now, I really think, you know, the Mariners could be in a prime window for success, not just on the field, but kind of in, you know, growing their brand across that area and drawing fans. So we have paragraphs have the Mariners projected for 83 and a half wins, so that's second in the west behind the Astros, you know, baseball perspectives and have them third behind the angels and then Houston on top. And I'm curious what your senses of where they see themselves in relation to a division that is getting stronger. You know, you have the angels trying to actually supplement trout and Otani with a bunch of guys who are competent big leaguers, the rangers are making these big pushes with their free agent signings. So where do they understand themselves to be? Well, the angels didn't really get a competent big league manager to supplement the situation, but we'll hear about and the fan grafts projections and everything else. They tend to mention and every once in a while, they'll notice, oh, we were picked to win this, this and this last year and look what we did. And on the year before, so they know, you know, I don't think there are division winner by any means. I just, I really like the Astros moves this off season I thought they were pretty smart. And until you even say, well, yeah, we played it right with them, but you didn't beat them. You know, played right with them in the postseason. And you didn't beat them. Now the Mariners were missing some guys. And the Mariners played them more competitively than they have in a long time. But you know, that's get you a division. Being competitive against a team, unless you can find ways to beat them, doesn't really matter. So I still think that the Astros are heads and tails above everybody else. Seattle, I would pick second. I guess maybe I've been burned too many times thinking that angels are going to be good. And then they're not. I like what Texas did. I thought Texas played really well towards the end of last season as well. There are not good defensively, though. But they gave the Mariners troubles and I guess if all these pitching guys and we've already seen some stuff with the ground, but that was the biggest thing with the rangers last year is the Mariners knew they could score runs against them. You know, when they couldn't score runs against anybody, they knew they could score runs against some rangers. And I think, you know, either the bullpen or the starters. So this year, if those improvements are there, I think it'll be better, you know, I still think the Mariners are the second best team. And I think they're probably about an 87 win team. But we'll see, you know, as they're currently constructed, I wouldn't be surprised if they try and make a move again. At mid season, you know, they're never ending pursuit of Brian Reynolds will continue. Forever. And, you know, until, you know, unless Jared really turns into something that will continue to try and get him. But you know, you can see spots where maybe they can supplement get more of a full-time DH that can bang it a little bit more than trying to piece it together all the time. Yeah, we've been ending these segments by asking our guests to say what would be a successful season for the team that they're previewing and prior to this year, I guess the answer for the Mariners would have been easy. You've got to make the playoffs, right?

"We're not going to bounce you back and forth this year. We're just going to have you only come as a reliever. I don't know, go from there. And he agreed to do that. And I think ultimately that may be his future, but it's costing him money. If he were to be able to kind of refine some stuff and be a little more efficient in the strikes and then become a better starter where you can make more money as a starter through arbitration and eventually free agency. But as of now, they've just told them be a reliever. He seems fine with it. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him. I saw a lot of video of him from dry line and such and it's pretty interesting. For a while there towards the end, he was one of their best relievers. People talk about munoz and see wald and such, but Scott service used him in some pretty difficult leverage situations and he was really good because the stuff is just so explosive. Like when you see big league hitters look back at the catcher, look back at the umpire even look out the mountain like, what the hell was that? Then you know that it really plays. Yeah, watching L two V respond to him in that playoff game in Seattle was pretty eye opening for what brash can do when it's all working for him. You mentioned how healthy Seattle's rotation was last year. I think that they were tied with San Diego and Colorado for using the fewest number of pitchers with multiple starts last season, so they had the same group of guys going through their. Hopefully they're able to replicate that same degree of health and effectiveness this year, but it's pictures, so they break and if they do, who do you anticipate that they would look to for reinforcements on the farm? Are we getting close to Emerson Hancock time? You know, I don't know if it'll be Hancock first. I think it'll be Bryce Miller would be the first to ask. Yeah, I think Bryce Miller will get the first shot. I watched him throw today. You know, everybody believes he'll be a reliever, 'cause he's kind of slight of build. His fastball is real, the breaking stuff was really impressive. I saw the change up, you know, it's not, it's a get your buy pitch. But they'll keep them stretched out for now and they need them. But if they get to a point where maybe they lose a reliever, then he could be a guy they call up and similar to Edwin Diaz being impact guy right away. But they aren't going to do a full-time conversion they want him stretched out. Hancock is, I haven't seen him yet, you know, Scott service said yesterday that he watched him pitch yesterday and he was really impressed. It looked like a different guy. I think Emerson had been kind of tentative, dealing with all the injuries stuff in the past. So he was really impressed by him. I think he'll go to double-A and he could move back up quickly because when it's right, I think with him he can be really good. So it's not like he's stuck being behind Bryce Miller. He can move up. You know, there's a guy named Taylor dollar who's more of a command guy, 91 92. He might be the most mature and he has more pitches. He could fill in on a spot start, maybe. And then their big guy that they really like and I'm sure makes her about him is a guy named Brian Wu. He's a right hander who is coming off Tommy John when they drafted him and he pitched in the Arizona fall league and de poto said that they had probably more calls on Brian Wu, in trade scenarios from teams than any other pitcher with exception of maybe Matt brash. So and I think honestly, if an injury came early enough, and if he is still on the roster, which I'm stunned that he is, Chris luxon would be the first guy to show up a rotation spot, you know, we are all joking when he'll be traded to New York. You know, and I thought he'd betrayed this off season in a package deal, but he would be the logical guy, but yeah, we'll see Bryce Miller. I think we'll probably see Bryce Miller in his debut as a reliever. And then Hancock and Brian will probably see you later in the year as well. I mean, they kind of admitted like we're going to probably have to use more pictures this year. It might not be like 2017, I think it was mainly when they used 45 pictures that year and 18 different starters. But like they're not in a position in 21 and I think 21 might have been 21, yeah, when they were trying to do the goofy 6 man rotation. And to protect kikuchi and guys were getting hurt, Marco got hurt, so guys like Robert Duggar were getting called up and dare macaque and all these guys, they're in a little bit better spot, like the guys that they would turn to now to make starts are more have legitimate big league stuff to get out. It's not just to fill in. Just a spot placeholder that you hope can just nurse you through 5 innings. Yeah, and I guess the Mariners are sort of in a similar position to the White Sox. The other team we're talking about today in terms of their current pharma system rankings and obviously both of these teams had celebrated farm systems in the not too distant past and they've graduated guys and that's what you want a pharma system to do and you promote those prospects and then hopefully you're in the period when you're winning. So it's sort of understandable if there's not a rich crop of prospects coming up behind the crop that you already graduated. But are they sort of seeing it as the core basically is there is in place. It's Julio. It's Kirby, it's Gilbert. It's these guys. It's brash, it's these guys we've been talking about already or did they see anyone who's coming up behind them as sort of of that kind of caliber when it comes to this Mariners window, however long that lasts. I don't know, baby on the pitching side.

"Of like, you know, Brett Favre, or one of those quarterbacks who always tries to make the impossible happen every time. Whereas just take what's given. I think the lack of shifts will help him. Thinks a maturity will help him. You know, I didn't know if he'd be around, honestly, I thought if they tried to make a trade for Brian Reynolds or somebody else that maybe he would be packaged in him. It may speak to where his value is at. But the Mariners believe he still can be something more than he's been. And I think if you look at kind of the talent and what you see from him, he definitely think that. So, yeah, I'm not expecting much more than. But if you got so crazy, we're saying this about it, 'cause we used to say about zen, you know, with the swinging is. But if you got like, if you got him to a two 40 to 50 batting average, you know, the power, the natural power will produce extra base hits. You know, and he's a plus base runner when it comes to like aggressiveness and stuff. I think, you know, baby steps first, just don't strike out as much. Understand what you want to do with breaking pitches, understand what guys are trying to do and don't try and sell out, you know, try and refine a little bit of the contact ability that he had when he was younger that seems to have been lost. You know, when in a push for power that wasn't necessarily what the Mariners asked, but what he thought was going to get him to the big league sooner. So one of the positions that Seattle definitely needed to shore up coming into this year was second base. They relied on Adam Fraser a lot there last year, you know, Abraham toro moonlighted there. He sort of offset a lot of Adam Frazier's war at the position and their solution to that was to go out and acquire Colton Wong, who I think they had flirted with as a potential free agent addition at one point in the recent past. What should Mariners fans expect out of Wong? You know, I haven't, you know, a ton of them. I mean, you watch them a little bit on TV. He still looks really athletic. I think he's 31, maybe, 32. The Mariners proceed him after going into the 21 season after the 2020 they needed. A filler at second base, going into 21, they had offered colt and I believe two years. And the brewers came back with another extra year, an extra option year or whatever. And Jerry de poto basically wasn't allowed to counter. By Kevin Mather at the time. And so, you know, they lost him and, you know, kind of tried to piece it together. I think, you know, I know he had a ton of errors last year and long blamed it from playing in the shift, you know, the brewer shifted a lot more than he was used to and didn't really love that. And kind of got into a funk, lost trust with his hands. I think he'll be fine. You know, now it's like you're just kind of play. I mean, there is no shift, so click you're not, you're playing a more traditional second base, you probably go up playing. He looks athletic still. From a hitting standpoint, you know, they just need better bat to ball guys in the bottom of the order. You know, Fraser was supposed to be that, but there just wasn't a lot of pop when he did. You know, I was like, he was back to ball, but it just didn't go anywhere. Wong has a little more pop. It might not be as much as he did when he's in Milwaukee or in the central. But yeah, I mean, just be a little bit better than what they've had. Because if you look at it, 2021, they won 90 games and they pieced it together with toro and Dylan Moore and how many shed long might have been out there. You know, and then last year they pieced together with toro and Fraser, but they never really gotten exceptional production where they just, you know, since probably Robinson Cano. Yeah. And so just don't be kind of, you know, that position just can't be a zero offensively and defensively. And I don't think it will be. I don't know that Colton Wong is going to go back to his 20 2018 forum with the Cardinals, but I think he'll be a better player than he was last year for certain. One of the Mariners intriguing rookies last year was Matt brasch, who is also one of the Mariners many WBC players this spring. He was up and down last year, great stuff, shaky control is probably a generous way to put it. He was in the rotation he was in the bullpen. Is he pretty much locked into relief now when he gets back from the WBC? This year for certain. He didn't want to be lucky. He didn't want to go to the bullpen last year, obviously, after he kind of pitched himself out of the rotation early in the year. Scouts have always kind of projected him as a reliever type because it's all hard, you know, the big slider and the knuckle curve and then the big fastball and not a lot of, you know, like you said, it's not just command. It's control. Like being able to throw a strike, let alone, quality strikes. But the Mariners were going to let him this off season stretch out to be a starter or at least come into camp as a starter and compete, you know, knowing, hey, we just had a season before where nobody got hurt at all. So let's have some depth as a starter in case something happens early in the spring. But with him going to the WBC and wanting to go to the WBC, the ramp up to being ready to pitch in games and such. The mayor said, okay, if you're going to do that, we'll let you do that, but we want you to just build up as a reliever because it's easier and it's quick and we don't want to run any risk of you getting hurt. Early because of its different than you've done before, because he missed all of 2020, essentially. And I'm just not a ton of volume in his past. So they just decided, look, if you want to pitch in the WBC, we'd rather then just have you come to camp only as a reliever.

"Finding a way to navigate through this season, you know, make 28 starts coming off a year where you pitched double what you've ever pitched in a professional season before. I think will be big. You know, if he makes 28 starts, that's a really good player. Like with George, I just think it's, hey, you know, be out there for it all. And can you make 28 starts, and can you do those things? And this is a guy that learned how to throw a two seam fastball. Middle of the year and saw Robbie ray do it and say, hey, let me try that. And picked it up and within three weeks was throwing at 97 miles an hour at the front hit up of a left handed hitter and having it dive back onto the plate. And just leaving guys shaking their head like, well, what the hell is this all about? So, I mean, I think that's, you know, a guy that's like, where do you go? You just kind of refine it. You just get a little bit better. Avoid one of the, you know, you're always going to have bad outings, but find ways to maybe work your way out of trouble at times. Say, they don't have all your best stuff or whatever. Can you find your way to get out of it and give the team a productive start? And they're going to still watch his innings and his workload. You know, if he goes out and throws a hundred pitches, one star, the 90 7, you know, the next one might only be 80 or 85, because they want him to monitor that. But I think for him, it's healthy, you know, having a way to combat lefties with that two seamer. I don't know that he'll ever have a great change up, but then again, you never know. Maybe it was just like Robbie ray and Logan Gilbert each fooling around with split finger fastballs, maybe George, Kirby picks up a baseball one day and says, well, I think I'll try a split finger and comes out and it's going to be a plus pitch because like Robbie ray was saying today, that kid is that talented. He can manipulate a baseball so naturally compared to the other guys, like they have to work at it. He just grips it, finds a way he says, what do I want this to do? And then throws it and it does it. I wanted to ask about Gilbert because he obviously had a great season last year. It took a step forward from his rookie campaign. What is the next move for him? What can he do to improve on a three two ERA and a three four 6 5th? Yeah, I mean, I guess Logan does give up some hard contact, you know? He will give up the bomb. I think that's the big thing is maybe just kind of being able to some of the hard contact numbers. His off speed stuff is improving, you know, the extension he gets on his fastball. Otherwise it's kind of straight at times, but I think that's just the big thing is finding ways to limit hard contact is this new split finger that he's toying with and I saw a video of it and looked like a wiffle ball. Does that help do that? Especially against lefties. Lefties lefties find ways, like if they can find ways to stay off the slider or the breaking ball early in counts and just kind of load up on that fastball and cheat it a little bit. They hit them and they hit them hard. Does the split finger off set that? I mean, I think that's the biggest step for him is limiting the hard contact and being able to do that. Because he's a really good pitcher in the moment. You saw what he did late in the season, you know, the game where they clinched against the a's, he was outstanding now. That wasn't the toughest lineup in the world, but he's really good. And I think he's, he's the type of person that will analyze data analyze results, all this kind of stuff. And get better every time out. Now, if you talk to his best friend Cal Raleigh, who's his harshest critic, Cal would be like, oh, he's never good ever, you know, but Cal, that's kind of the whole roommates thing as well. But I think I've been like, we're sitting there talking about what Logan and George could be and they're coming off years that are really good. For me, this group for success is just about being on the field. If they're on the field and they're on the mountain pitching, consistently, and not battling any kind of lingering arm issues or anything like that, then they're a pretty good group altogether. The weakest projected position for the Mariners is left field. And I guess also DH some of the same guys on the depth charts at each of those positions. But it comes back to the Jared Kellen question, right? So what is the outlook for Cal Nick as if that is ever an easy question to answer? And how do you expect the playing time to pan out with Cal Nick and Pollock and other players in that mix? As far as I know, I mean, it's going to be a strait of a platoon as possible and left field. You know, with Pollock starting the games in left when there is a lefty on the mound, you know, and Jared will be out there in the right hand of days and, you know, I would think you'll see Jared as a defensive replacement late in games. And I think if you can do that, if you can just limit Jared to face and righties for right now, and I don't think he has a bad approach or a bad swing against lefties. It's just like a lot of the left he was facing for a while, or just really, really good. What does to it did to him late in the season was kind of borderline cruelty. But yeah, I think we're talking about this today and we were having lunch. And I expect him to be a competent big league player, now is he going to match the hype that he was before? No, I don't see that. You know, even as bad as he was and how often he swung and miss, if you look at the collected of two seasons two abbreviated seasons, I think it's about 500 plate appearances that are still 21 homers and I think 20 doubles. And think about that. He was not put in a situation to succeed at times. He was really, you know, that he faced a lot of lefties early. They played him when he was struggling anybody else in 21. And so I think, you know, if the Mariners do a better job of controlling the scenarios where he's playing, I think he'll find some moderate to decent success and then can build on that. I think the talent is there. You look at everything that he does, he is God all the tools, but it's just the ability to kind of relax himself and play. And understanding the moment, not trying to hit a Grand Slam, when there's nobody on base. You know, how do you handle all that stuff? And then the failure that comes with it, it was like

"mariner" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"Not a single team in the AL east projects from even 90 wins for us, right? Let alone more than 90 and you might say, well, that's ridiculous. They got some, they got some good teams. Well, yeah, they got a bunch of good teams. That's a problem. They got to play each other, even if they play each other a little less than they have in years past. So yeah, and then, you know, guys will be good who we don't anticipate being good. Guys will get hurt who we think will play a full year's worth of innings or plate appearances. You know, stuff will change between now and when the season closes, but this is, this is our guest right now. And I think it's a pretty well informed one. Yeah, and there's not a single team that has 0% playoff odds. Every team is at least at .1%, rounding up to .1. So yeah, I think that we received and heard the feedback that zero suggested a finality before the season had even begun that people thought both did not reflect the math and also was a bummer. So right. Yes, there are 6 teams that have 0% World Series odds. Yeah. But we're not expecting a lot from the rockies or the reds. Red pirates, yeah. They're in the zero percent World Series odds club. But Stranger Things have happened, I guess. If you have say, I'm having to weigh whether Stranger Things have happened than one of those teams winning the World Series this year. Probably maybe at least in the world, if not the world of baseball. I did just compare to the fan graphs play ads, because somewhat similar methodologies just in principle at the core. But some significant differences here in has some higher highs and lower lows in terms of the projected wind totals, maybe because it's just one projection system instead of an amalgamation of two potentially. So a little bit of a wider range there. But I look for the bigger differences if you're someone who's looking for a reason for optimism about a team that one of these projections. You can do some shows. I really, you know, I think puka is onto something with those mets, but it's got, you know, it's definitely wrong about the cardinals, you know. So the teams with a double digit percentage point differential. So these are the teams that the fan graphs playoff odds are higher on than the picota based playoff ads. Top of the list, the Giants where the fan graphs are about 21 percentage points higher. So fan grass says the Giants with like a 41% chance and BP just has them with a 19% chance. The Mariners, the team were about to talk about fan graphs higher on the Mariners to the tune of almost 20 percentage points. Also the rangers, though, about 20 percentage points fan graphs is higher on cardinals, 18 points raised 13 points, braves 13 points and White Sox, the other team that we're going to talk about today about 13 percentage points. So if you thought that those projections were a little depressing for the Mariners in the White Sox, well, just get a load of the pagoda projections for those teams. And then it gets worse. It does. These are the teams that method was higher on than fan grass method by ten percentage points or more. The Dodgers. Still pretty high on the Dodgers pagoda still has the Dodgers at the top of the NO west. They have the Dodgers with a 26 percentage point higher playoff odds, but still only well, I guess in their case, it's like a 95% chance that the Dodgers will make the playoffs. It's more iffy, whether they'll win the division, then the twins, BP is higher on by about 24 percentage points. Philly's 16 guardian 16 angels 16 Yankees 15 and the brewers and Astros 11 percentage points a piece. So it's not like enormous differences we're talking about 2025 percentage points at the max. So there's a general large agreement I would say. Yeah, I mean, I think that mostly mostly been this goes to show Craig's pro Dodgers bias. You know? Stickiness thumb on that scale. You'll notice, didn't do that for the Mariners of the old fire grass no. Yes, you were the impartial unbiased managing editor in Craig is just putting his thumb on the scale over there. Yeah, the differences in terms of World Series odds between the two methods. So the World Series adds obviously no team has super high chances to win the World Series. And so these differences are going to be smaller, but biggest difference in terms of a team that fan graphs is higher on than BP. It's the braves, 9.3 percentage points. So that's a pretty big gap. The fan graphs play off ads and projections. I think that the braves are the best team at baseball, right? Or at least we'll have the most wins. And then the Padres, fan graphs is higher on about 5 percentage points higher, which is in line with what we were saying about BP still being high in the Dodgers. And then the raise about four percentage points and the Cardinals, three percentage points. So those are the teams that fan graphs likes better than BP. Mariners are next at about two percentage points higher for fan grass. And then on the other end, teams that BP is higher on Dodgers again, 8 percentage points higher World Series ads for BP followed by the Yankees at about 5, the twins at about three, the mets at about three the Astros at about three, and then the guardians and the Phillies rounding to two. So yeah, I guess the Dodgers Padres difference would maybe be the biggest one comparing the two systems.

Author Andrew Klavan and Eric Discuss 'The Truth and the Beauty'

"Volks welcome back, I'm talking to Andrew clavin. Do you understand? I'm talking to Andrew clavin, he's written a book called the truth and beauty. It's an amazing book. It is at least brilliant, at least, brilliant. And it was just wonderful to read Andrew, I want to say, congratulations on really having the guts to write this book because I can see how a lot of editors or publishers would try to steer you in different directions. And you, obviously, said to them, shut up. Here's the book. And I'm so glad I'm so glad you did. There's only one editor that I could think of. When I finished it and I put it, as you know, I put a lot of work into it, I thought gee, if this one editor turns this down, I simply don't know where else where else I'll go. So Webster Joanne sees now the publisher of zander van, but he was my editor on my memoir, and he took it instantly. I'm not surprised. He would be the one that I would suggest and God bless him for doing that. Because this is an important book, and I think that, as I said, the level of writing what you get into, what really delighted me, as I mentioned this earlier, how you bring to life figures that I didn't really think of biographically. I mean, somebody mentions coleridge, okay, I've heard of the rhyme of the ancient Mariner. You mentioned keats, you mentioned it. These are figures that I had not really come to appreciate as human beings, just as these names behind poems.

Lucinda From Moink Shares Her Story

"Her? You may already know her as the woman behind a company that I'm excited about. It's called moo plus oink equals moin. Do you get it? Box dot com lucinda. Welcome to the program. Well, thank you for having me, Eric. Well, now where do you come from? Well, I come from a small town called Lebel, and Missouri. In Missouri. They call it Missouri. I know it's Missouri. I mean, I know that you're not close to an airport if you pronounce it Missouri. You're a real missourian. Right? Something like that. Come on. So your story because I want my audience to get to know you and the whole story. But tell us the short version just to start of what is morning and moik box and the family farm. And just give us that. And then we're going to get into the backstory. Yeah, sure. Well, I'm an 8th generation farmer. 8th generation farmer. You don't look that old. How's that possible? Right. Thank you. You're an 8th generation farmer. Yes. Can you tell us how far that goes back? What year are we talking about? Well, since they came over and actually they came through New York than Virginia. And then they end up in Kentucky. But you don't even know when this is. I know in the early 1800s, we moved from Kentucky to Missouri, which is why I sound the way I was. But I was saying, but if I were part of an 8th generation something, I would give you dates. I give you the day of the week that we came over. I mean, 8th generation is so far back by American standards. I'm wondering if you didn't come across the land bridge, the Bering strait language from Siberia because we're talking way, way, way back. Okay, but so you are now, you're it. You're the 8th generation. Yes, so I was born raised and still hail from a town of 600 people. And so I grew up on a family farm, obviously. And when I was 11, my father died and my mother was left with 6 mouths to feed in a farm she couldn't afford. I know that seems crazy that she would have land everywhere and we would go hungry, but it's kind of like that water water everywhere and nothing to eat. And not a drop to drink. Yeah, nothing. What is that from Alvin? Coleridge? The ancient Mariner. And by the way, who cares? Go ahead. So anyway, didn't make sense to me. So I really made it when I grew up. I felt like it was my life mission to help family farmers be independent outside of big egg to be able to make a living to have an honest day's pay for an honest day's wage.

"Today. I'm going to do something a little different for this installment of your next dive normally tried to take you to a dive destination where we talk about the trip from a number of different perspectives. The travel the lodging the dive operator. Oh yeah the diving. Now we've been around the world. But today i'm going to focus on one particular dive that is almost in our backyard. It is one of the most iconic dives here in new england and that is the wreck of the chester. Polling off gloucester mass. The chester polling was a coastal tanker. That sank in a brutal storm on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven. The tanker had just left everett massachusetts and was bound for newington new hampshire. That information is pretty consistent in the research but there is other conflicting information about where she had been. And what cargo she delivered for example some documentation said she had previously delivered kerosene to new jersey while others indicated that the heating oil was delivered to everett mass. I would suspect that delivery to everett mass to be more likely always interesting when you Doing research to get this type of inconsistency now the chester polling was bill in nineteen thirty four at mariners harbor new york by united dry docks incorporated it was originally in the plattsburgh sacconi somewhere along the line at also known as the mobile albany before getting renamed as the chester polling at the time of its sinking it was owned by the motor vessel polling brothers and that was number one inc. I wasn't able to find who was actually named after but obviously some member of the family. So that's a little bit of history about the ship now on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven capital captain. Bert charles burgess was in command. The forecast for that day was for thirty five mile an hour winds along with fifteen to twenty foot seas. the chester polling chester. A polling left. Everett are left everett at six thirty. A m well as we all know. Forecast can be wrong. The winds built up to fifty miles per hour and to seize goddess highs. Thirty feet facing the mounting sees captain. Burge's tried to get more stability by adding more ballast but at ten thirty a m a thirty foot waves smashed into the tanker and broke it in half the captain called for abandoning the ship. Six of the seven members of the crew were saved. I believe it was the cook jail. Derosa from providence rhode island who perished the sir. The stern section of the chester polling came to rest off easter point gloucester originally in about seventy five feet of water with the bow section sinking about four miles off of eastern point in about one hundred ninety feet of water subsequent winter. Storms move the stern section to its present location about eight hundred yards off of eastern point about ninety five feet of water. I think the bottom might be a little bit deeper than that. However the stern section of the chester polling is what some folks call hollywood wreck sitting upright and is probably the most popular wreck dive off. Cape ann as that areas known. Now i- i dove the chester polling way back in july two thousand and five. It was my fortieth dive and a double dip on. The polling was part of my advanced open water class. These dyes would constitute my deep and wreck advanced. Open water dives. At that time. I was still diving in a seven. Millimeter wetsuit with the appropriate gloves and hood. I use the standard aluminum. Eighty tank with nighthawks. Thirty two. I can still remember the anxiety that had doing. The first real wreck dive in the northeast but once in the water what an amazing dive the visibility that day was thirty feet and my max step was at eighty five. Even though it was july the water temperature on iraq was fifty degrees. It was incredible to move along the deck and reach the mid mid ship section where. The tanker broken half absolutely mesmerizing but with an aluminum. Eighty you don't get much bottom time and after about fifteen minutes we headed back to the up line and after are appropriate safety. Stop we climb back aboard the boat and got ready to do it again. Total dive time was twenty six minutes the second dive that day was just as spectacular and pretty much the same profile. Let me just say in a wetsuit. It can get pretty chilly. I didn't go back to the chester polling until august. Two thousand nine and that was my last trip there. It was my two hundred and forty ninth dive but this time i did it in a dry suit and hope to get some good video of iraq. I still dove aluminum. Eighty the dive was just as i remembered and just as exciting visibility again was thirty feet. And my max. Depth was eighty two with and the bottom temperature. That day was forty eight degrees still very cold but so much better in a dry suit again however with an aluminum eighty. You just. Don't get much bottom time especially if your task loading like shooting video so my recommendation is that if you are planning to die the polling you might want to consider a little bit bigger tank something like a steal one hundred or going to doubles. I know that i wouldn't consider going back with anything less than a steel one hundred tank. How do you get to the chester polling back. Then we use cape and divers but they closed up several years ago and recently the dive boat cape and diver to was purchased by several guys from boston. An air now operating regularly chart regular charters again became an diverse to is a forty five foot. us coastguard registered dive vessel. It is spacious and right now with limited divers on board you get plenty of room to get ready and dive but you don't get a lot of but you don't get a lot of time because you don't have a lot of time to get ready because the is only a few minutes from the dock so be prepared one thing. Different about northeast wreck diving. Is that as a diver. You need to bring all your gear that includes tanks weights everything. It's not like diving at a resort. Don't get caught short by not being prepared with all your own stuff now. Here's an interesting element. That i discovered during my research. It appears that in nineteen sixties. The chester polling was length lengthened. By maybe twenty six or so feet. That doesn't sound like much. But at the time of her sinking her length with two hundred and eighty two feet so that lengthening was about ten percent of the original ship's length could this have been a contributing factor for the ship splitting in half. I wonder so if you happen to be in the area of cape ban in gloucester massachusetts. You might wanna look up cape and diver to and head out for a double dip on the chester a

"So now we got this series against the Orioles coming up in The Bronx guys. What else do you want me to say? It's simply has to be a tweet, a tweet. It simply has to come on Twitter. Sorry. It has to be a sweep. They can not settle for anything. It's the rays lost again to the Red Sox, not entire. I don't know what's ideal for the Yankees now. You know, do you want the raise to keep losing and the Red Sox gaining ground? The Red Sox are a game and a half behind the Yankees now. It's just three in the lost column. And the rays are 6 and a half up on the Yankees for the division. So luckily the Yankees have this three game set against the Orioles that they truly have to take advantage of because the Red Sox next 9 games, oh, I'm sorry. Red Sox next 12 games come against the Indians, not bad, but not great, raise White Sox and Mariners, and those latter 6 are on the road. So ground to make up here for the Yankees who will have the Orioles, the Blue Jays and the mets in the mets, the one makeup game against the twins and then the Orioles again. So this is it, guys. Will He Ever Heat Up? Diagnosing Joey Gallo's Skid Since the Trade

"The goal here with Gallo was to lengthen the lineup and diversify the lineup. Left handed bat, he gives tough at bats and he's able to give protection to other guys in the lineup. Perhaps, I mean, it not perhaps. It is certainly paved the way for John Carlos Stanton Luke Voight and Aaron judge to be on the hot treats that they are on right now. And we're thankful for that. But a lot of fans have been sitting here saying, oh, dude, when Joey Gallo heats up, forget about it. Forget about it. This team's gonna be unstoppable. But we have no evidence of him heating up. So Anthony Rizzo heated up right upon his arrival in The Bronx. Made his statement. Singlehandedly, I will go out and say single handedly won that series against one that series sweep against the Marlins. Was it colossal reason for that? That kick started the Yankees incredible run throughout the month of August. But Joey Gallo has yet to really come on. I know we have that go ahead home run against the Mariners. That was an awesome moment to signature Yankee moments since coming over on the trade. But since then, he's grounded into three double plays. In four games, he didn't three double plays before, so it was Saturday Sunday Monday and Tuesday. Over the course of those four games, he grounded into three double plays. He grounded into three double plays in his previous 95 games with the rangers. What how does this how does this even happen? Before that, he grounded into 8 double plays in his previous 346 games. So bad luck, sure, but like, what? When is this gonna stop? So my question is and my doomsday question because I love asking these because I like seeing people freak out. This is just how my brain operates guys. When do we start worrying about this

"And you know what what the i think. Just what the reaction in the pacific rim and if he were here doing this in seattle it would it would be so off the charts explosive unbelievably incredible. And i think the fruits and the finances and the money would come flowing in with that would allow for more spin. I have a hard time saying. Yeah in logan gilbert. I think would be here regardless either way. He was there pick based on what they had done the year before. So i know this was the push. And i know it was the impetus to tear the wall down. So i don't want to minimize that Almost by losing him gave you them on that legal pad the okay so right correct also not just those guys at the top of your your systems entire truly invested in the whole thing and i don't know i'm torn i. I like the position. The mariners are in better than the position. The angels are in right. Who do you think is poised to be better over. The course of the next five years i think the mariners do. That's tough angel systems such garbage. They had to fire so keep going back in history. Mariners decided to hire jerry dipoto. Who's the other top candidate for the job illegally up ler billy up ler signs of the angels instead. He's already out of a job because such a lousy job in anaheim. The angels farm system is garbage their roster outside of the two best players in baseball is garbage. Their pitching staff is garbage garbage. They just have to great players and the rest of it is complete and utter trash. Except for fletcher just kills mariners kills the mariners. You'd like eight. Of his twelve home runs in the big leagues of all against the mariners. Sunday like and fletcher's driven in every right or the angel settled down dude just so an individual future over the angels future we know. A single individual cannot elevate in. Lift the tie of dysfunctional organization in baseball like again and football that a single innovative pitcher and a hitter in the best in the league at both yes. We know that can't be done. We watch mike trout. They're right within kathy war over the last decade. That's men it's still think two of the best players in baseball might might at least get you going but give me otani and give me then jerry and scott and there i and their development given any mckay and everything else that were seen. Yeah i think. I'd i'd still. I don't eat the guy like you and how do you do Because ultimately he had a choice to make an ultimately he went with trout and in la and everything else and that market really bad choice but man was. It wasn't a terrible choice. No the face of baseball right now. Yeah yeah you don't think that that could have happened anywhere. I don't think that's an la thing. I i don't think so at all. I think it's a- think he was right connected to mike trout and people already ready to fun. I don't think so at all. I think it's just what he's doing so different unique compared to what everyone else in baseball was doing that that he's he people wanna put ice on it a to say it's a like a a three ring. Circus sounds negative. But i don't mean it that way like there's something unique and different that we've never seen before and that's what people are responding to. He's dominating in multiple ways than matter where he is right. This is dion sanders. Didn't matter were dion sanders. Played that matter were bo. Jackson played bo. Jackson played for the kansas city. Royals one of the smallest markets and baseball. If you were but like yeah. I think he would. I honestly don't think it has even a bit to do with where he plays if he played for the pirates and they had the same record as the angels do right now absolutely if he was doing the same stuff. Be a little weird. Because he'd be in the national league the whole pitcher budding saying like your favorite city. Saint louis be huge deal. I mean but like i don't really matters any city he's in he's he's absolutely the same monster star that he is right now. So congratulations you went to the angels. They're still bad. How's that working out for you. there you go. I don't know if you'd have harry ford because that's another high draft pick that you end up with right number twelve draft pick this year. Did you love the harry. Ford bronco dudes an athlete. He could jump our see the like sixty injured. Jump metcalf a little competition here. Mr ford not in baseball because decays terrible. Dia did you see this. The beginning celebrity off now he was trying to hit ball out of course field but he did make contact correct. He should've gone. Did you see later. Von miller laid down a bunt. Yes yeah maybe decay should have gone that route. I would. i mean you know who's a job see what was like she'd go out and play and she came up right after decay. She's like you know. Four four three youtube star. My kids know her. I saw that. I don't know how much we want to unpack about the celebrity softball. She credible tim curtin was there. He was called with his son. Not tim. curtin had a weird voice. I thought it was bev mo. I was like what excuses. They said he was going to be the coaching boys. I'm not even kidding. Wait they were serious. Owens's here welcome impersonation of both kyle likes well win. Von miller laid down the bundy..

"I'm saying griz. Could i say anything about them at the whole crew. I didn't say anything about what what they lack. I'm just saying rally kid great because it was real. It was natural it was genuine. I loved it. I thought it was really great. In the way the team kind of became a part of it and service and shed long mitch haniger and all those guys kind of bringing them down with awesome loved it. That's exactly i mean. Isn't that the kind of bond between team and city. You want yes. I love it very real very worried hogging so we delete this if it's inappropriate and offensive but i didn't have my readers on when i i was watching the highlights of rally kid. "You swear at a referee i know this sounds crazy and i know this sounds sort of counterproductive but you don't talk about the referee mother. Okay right. the spanish players do english. Punish you finally get your opinion on the premier league. You've faffing a lot with our in his first season of course during a lot of criticism. Particularly the offside that will be thicker lines. Now so it won't be right down to the millimetre. Does that make life easier for the officials. Of course it is for. The kim's changed so much what what upset me about. Vr is that in the past fee for adamant for goals. They wanted to see more goals or wanted to see more tag and fears. And what did it destroyed this because two reasons one. The offside was so tight. The defenders always had the advantage and also humble was differently interpreted if you handled it as a defender was no penalty. But you handled it. As an attack and that was a disallowed goal so therefore the tweak the handball to allow the attack at the school and directly scores himself. And now the tweet the off side. Because what was happening was you can have. An armpit of side doesn't feel fair. I'm pointing in the direction of the ball. And my sleeve is deemed offside. It doesn't seem correct. So what they're going to try and do is not use the precision which a lot of countries use this three d technology when use the three d technology we talk and millimeters. We talk and how great football is and we're talking margins of a millimeter and what you have done in this tournament which is very similar to holland. They've just drawn a line across and allowed. Your is to take that judgment. And i think everybody accepts that philosophy and it's moved on within thirty seconds. And there's been no debate. About offside and for me. This is the best way. Because what i miss about. Football is the emotion. When it plays scores a goal we're con have on half thirty forty seconds of drama to draw the lines when it's the moment so i think it'll be a great addition to that point. The dutch and the busy pioneered the use of video technology daily ones who presented data on their findings to i five when making decisions around the use of technology in the game. I'm thinking well street off. They had their decisions. Don't to eight seconds time yet as you as you build on it on. It was introducing why to give you see to use of technology and all of a sudden. No he over decisions for three three and four minutes as opposed to eight seconds and it just felt as much as we. We applaud the use of technology. And the need for the right decision just felt like it was taking away from the game somewhat so to hear you see with dutch to it. That was hold was introduced and not as how it was sold. I'm not sure how you got to the point that we all know multi. Thank you months. i've been with my sense. You spoke in that time thanks. What's the next. Espn afc tattoo across the division west. "The yankees did win. Two out of three from the mariners. And i've actually won three of their last. Which is weird. That doesn't feel true but it is the reason it doesn't feel true though is because one of the winds was seven innings long chattering closer came after world champion already blown a game like an hour and a half prior and then to the wins game in ten. Pm eastern games and the loss in the mariner series was the finale which aired at four pm eastern which everybody watched and went up yankee suck getting one hit in seven innings by a righty reliever who you know looking. Gilbert is good. Logan gilbert is good. He's good good rookie. He's got a lot of potential but he entered the game with a four. Ira you gotta get more than one. Head against logan gilbert so. That's our my expectations unreasonable. Now i don't think they are. They're also colored. By what i know about the new york yankees so i go into that game to go all right absolutely you know. Do they have to sweep this series when the series starts no but after you win the first two and the first one is a twelve one pounding and the second one your starter goes and inning. And it's nick nelson and somehow you're able to survive a five four victory. That should be the hard one like once you get the second one and it's impossible it's like okay now that we got that under our belts at one in the morning while most of yankees nation was asleep. Now we have that one under our belts. Let's go get the third one which is jordan. Montgomery who sort of steady this year. You can expect six innings. Three runs and sure enough. He gets into the seventh gives up just as reruns. Yeah you lose four. Nothing they get one hit offloading. Gilbert started major

"Of feeling yes and save for me. Randy johnson has like just such a special place in my heart. I feel like you can't leave him off because like i said the role that he played on that team in those playoff runs like he was a twenty game winner in ninety seven when the mariners made the playoffs again he was an all star that season he was also an all star. Ninety three ninety four ninety five won the cy young award ninety five and like he didn't strike fear or king felix did not strike the feared two batters. That randy johnson did. Hey now that's that's the one hundred percent true. There's because again. Are you with that. Because i feel like with with king felix a nervousness of you. Know what's gonna come but you still can't hit both randy johnson. This guy might have a screw loose. I don't know where the ball's gonna come. He probably doesn't know where it's going to come. And i don't know if it's going to be one hundred. Three mound are fastball over. It's going to be in ninety. Nine are slider. Yep you know so like there was like a physical fear put into batters that very few other patriots have had course of over the course of a lifetime. He threw his first. No no in nineteen ninety cy young award winner ninety five and four thousand. Eight hundred seventy five strikeouts. That's strikeout nine of ten point six. Yeah he also had one thousand nine one thousand four hundred ninety seven walks which is pretty good for a guy with those kind of control issues and you know just shy at seven feet tall. Yeah yeah that was. One thing that i thought was funny that that yes the ball is coming out of his hand at one hundred plus because he's stepping halfway to the to the plate and he had he had a unique motion. You know a lot of guys have their arm at ninety degrees when they throw but he had that three quarter arm slot cocked. Where was yeah. Yeah it was like a sling. Coming out of there where yeah especially. Since armor so long for left handed batter the ball is starting four feet behind. You then have to swing back across the plate. Everything feels like it's coming at you at that point. Yeah yeah so as long as mustaches. And his mullet. That moore was males. But he just wouldn't been stockcar. That's the only difference. Exactly exactly the one problem. I have with randy. Johnson is that he went into. And i don't blame him for this. He went into the hall of fame as a diamondback as an arizona diamondbacks and you know he. He had good years in arizona. He won a world series of the diamondbacks. So i totally get that. They always wish that he had gone in as a mariners because he had he was so dominant in those years. But you know i can. I could see it because he was one. Two three four five time all star with the diamondbacks last time was when he was forty so it is what it is whatever. It's fine he's he's my he's the fourth guy. My mount rushmore. That's pretty good man i. I can't argue with you As far as not picking king felix. What i can do is tell you that you've left out. Arguably the most important personality in the entire franchise off your mount rushmore. Oh.

"That was like two weeks. It's like the last month of the season in chicago. A lot of people forget about that number seventeen with the white sox playing right field at the agent. What do you think about. It tells you your thoughts on the kid. Well so i mean you hit the nail on the head transcended baseball. You know the iconic backwards at the most beautiful swing. We have ever seen to date. I don't know of anybody who has kind of them. And cody bellinger. You could see kind of tries to mimic it. A little bit One time i noticed. His stance is very similar to griffey's He's changed it up since then His swing is a little bit in that direction. But i think that might just be. Because he's a lefty But i think you can see. There are some inspiration drawn there which is obvious. You know the kid who grew up in an mlb clubhouse but i mean griffey had influence over an entire generation of fans the only other guy can think of who had that kind of influence was michael jordan and their contemporaries playing in the midnight in the nineties early two thousands for sure their contemporaries and and you know as like my you know every day every kid playing baseball wanted to be like griffey And you know one thing that. I don't know how well known. This is about. His influence on the game is that griffey is his approaching. Bud selig is the reason that a they have. Jackie robinson day where everybody wears number forty two and also the reason. The jackie robinson's number is is retired across major league baseball. That's right ken. Griffey junior had that idea brought it to bug the but see like and it was executed. So i mean more than just on the field he i guess that's mostly on the field. But across the entire game that he understood the importance of jackie robinson his life and the league and he felt like it was important enough that everybody should understand that. And i think it's great. I thought when. I heard that i thought it was amazing. Somebody who cares way more about way more things than just himself because it could have been easy for him to be selfish his entire career. Oh for sure you know and you can argue that there were times. Be everybody's got to be selfish at some point you know. When he asked out of seattle we saw the junior documentaries because he was miserable he was. We wanted to be with his family. And i can't fault that especially especially being a dad you know but you know this the impact that he had on my favorite team growing up the i. I've spoken to people over the last few years. It's like i don't know why honestly if you didn't grow up in the pacific northwest. Why anybody be manners fan and the same answer. Every time is i grew up watching griffey like there. You go there you go well. Any japan You know what. I mean any any. Yeah all of the ten all star teams. That's transcendent right there. That's that's how you become a fan of griffey if you didn't grow up there in any way. Green griffey jr wins. He just as a winner wins all of the things that you can win so the gold glove every single year. He was in seattle. Is exactly he wins. All the things you can win. it's the thing does. Yeah yep absolutely saved baseball in seattle. I mean we can't..

michael jordan jackie robinson chicago griffey cody bellinger Griffey two weeks Jackie robinson one thing japan Green griffey jr pacific northwest every single year forty two seattle ten all star Bud selig nineties last month major league baseball
