"Oh, Marin Cilic in his 15 double faults. Yeah, I mean, watching his matches, I have a very similar feeling to how I feel watching Maria Sakura's matches, which is I unclench on his behalf when he falls behind in the school. And that's what happened in this match. He was serving 5 6 in the deciding set. He's loved 30 down. Reels off. A load of incredible points, consecutively, he's one four down in the tiebreak. It looks like it's all got away from him. You know, public or any boosters such as steady Eddie. You just don't see you just don't see him throwing it away. From that point and he didn't. Marin Cilic wrenched it from him, he reeled off, you know, 2014 U.S. open, Marin Cilic for a few points there. He just couldn't do it at any stage when he was ahead in the school. And I'm fairly evaporation for him. A little bit like, I mean, in several length of this year with her serving woes. Just having to find a way to win in spite of yourself and how agonizing that must be. He's a poster boy for that just like she is, but it's very stressful to watch, isn't it? And as Matt put it perfectly in our WhatsApp group, does Marin Cilic have fangs? Colon, the most complicated question in tennis. Explain yourself Matt. That's the title of the essay. I have written the essay. I don't want to have to write it. But that's the title of it. Well, yeah, because exactly, as you said, it's so confusing because I think Marin Cilic is a more even more extreme example than those players you've named. And I agree it's similar in terms of sabalenka and saccharin because Marin Cilic is a Grand Slam champion. He's a Grand Slam finalist. He's a Davis Cup champion. He's achieved so much. So you know that the highs are really high with him. And every now and again, he has a spell in a match and agree it is often when he's behind in the score, where it appears like he does have fangs. He can totally take over. He can get a sort of look in his eye that just says nothing is going to stop him. And he's got so many weapons and he hits the ball so cleanly that there's sort of nothing an opponent can do about it. And it's the epitome of fangs when he's in that mode. But then there's the other side where he's twitching as he's about to serve and he's decelerating on his serve and his feet are doing a little jiggle just before he's about to hit a forehand and he's shanking the ball and mis hitting it and generally he's a sort of nervous wreck and he doesn't look like he has fangs at all. And you get those two experiences within minutes of each other. You know, he can go from looking like a U.S. open champion to looking like someone who isn't even going to be able to make a serve within seconds. And it just makes for such a such an extraordinary experience to watch him completely enthralling, but a little bit stressful at the same time. A little bit stressful. I mean, I got the feeling you were about to walk out. He was so better of the undulations in the match. Just couldn't be doing with it at one stage. And yet that was within the best atmosphere of the week and one of the best atmospheres of the year wasn't it? That was classic Davis Cup. Home, team, on the back foot, fighting back, which is twice a break of serve up in a deciding set. And then I got the sense to realize that they could get to him as well. And they were trying to is that how it felt? Yes, I really think so. I think Chile just showed enough vulnerability and the entire stadium sort of seized upon it. And it was spine tingling in there at times because they came up with some extraordinary shots as well. It wasn't totally Marin Cilic sort of melting down. You know, there were some forehand passing shots in particular from Pablo carreno busta, which were extraordinary and the noise in the stadium cut right through you. They had chance, they just were cheering, they were standing on their feet, and then when something happened that they didn't like, they made a very European noise, which is to whistle. It's not something that Brits ever do. Brits boo, I think, and Europeans, Spanish, they whistle. And it sort of gives you a bit of a headache when you're in the stadium. It's such a sharp noise. But it's, you know, there were over 9000 people in the stadium today, all doing it at once. And it was an overwhelming sensory experience in that stadium. And as you said, exactly what Davis Cup is known for. It's almost, it's almost difficult to praise the new version of Davis Cup for that because this is what Davis Cup has always had. This is what we're searching for at every tie, if possible. But now it feels like we really have to treasure the ties where it's like this. And of course, Spain losing means it might not be for the rest of the tournament. I still think that would be good crowds, good atmospheres, but it won't be like this again, where the home nation was playing and yeah, it was a hell of an experience to be in that stadium. He was one four down. It looked like he had, I mean, as you said, Corona buster, I think, on the run is one of the great counter punches. And he got himself to four one. It looks like chili, it's just fallen apart. The crowd of got to him. And then he won one point to get back to four two and he got that look in his eye that you referenced. That sort of I am not going away. Look, and I am coming back. And he did. I mean, from one four down to win that tiebreak, that is an extraordinary achievement. And then he came up with a running passing shot of his own Catherine that I think is one that will take with us from 2022 into 2023. Yeah, Corona buster had made a really great little volley, very, very close to the line, Marin Cilic is on the run. It wasn't a very familiar sight somehow, like I just don't think of Marin Cilic is the running passing shot guy. He's a very good mover for his height, very, very good. Very rarely look slow or lumbering. But I still just don't think of him as the running passing shot going. There he is, banana ring this forehand around Corinna bass and not quite around the net post, but that sort of a vibe. And it's just plopping inside the line. It was wonderful. And then on match point, 6 5, he plays just, I mean, it was totally reminiscent of 2014 U.S. open Marin Cilic. Those laser like ground strokes with such conviction of on them.

I was like, you know what? I'm gonna be cool and act like I didn't see it and retweet it like three hours later. Wow. And he was cool acting like a champion. And now for WTO he's been rabies this TFO story. The big takeaway from tiafoe's win is that he deserves to be here. He didn't fluke his way into the U.S. open quarters. This isn't some colossal upset. It is a big deal because it's the first time he's beaten Adele, but really tiafoe's game has been trending in the right direction for the past couple of years and especially over the past few months. It's his time, and he looks the part. "Puts baritone head of him? Yes. Slam form, I would say. Obviously her catch has reached the Wimbledon semifinal last year, and he froze a little bit against barattini to be honest. Was berrettini brings it in slams. He only loses to top top players in slams, and he's got more weapons as well. I think if baritone has a bit of an off day, like I felt it did at queens a couple of times, as you said, I didn't always think he was paying his best tennis, but he's got that serve. He's got that forehand, which he can rely on and I think those are those are two things which I feel like with her catch, it all needs to come together, basically, for him. Her catch in two. I think the other name would be alcaraz. Simply because we don't know. You know, he might be amazing on grass. We don't have that much information. He's pretty amazing generally. It wouldn't surprise me that much if he walked up on grass and could kind of do it. But there's an unknown quantity, so I struggle to put him in the mix. Definitively, but I would be open to someone putting him in their mix. I suppose. Okay. We're going in a lot of requests for us to design and in the mixed T-shirt at the moment. Because we're going to buy one. The might put them in one. Maybe. Don't think so. Our cars last year at Wimbledon played Medvedev. And he lost 6 four 6 one 6 two. In the second round, but rather different player now, isn't he? Wait to see Alcatraz at Wimbledon. It will be exciting, won't it? And again, just to see what sort of drawing might get and what that might do and what an opponent might do against him based on that difference in surface. It's fascinating. We've seen some interesting players over the last week, particularly queens where we've been paying close attention. Marin Cilic looked decent until the semifinals and then he was really poor, I thought against a very, very good crying of it, who, who's a funny cat, isn't he? Crying of it. I mean, he said he was trying to find ways to avoid the grass court tournaments until this year in his 30 years of age, and you're watching him coming into the net and he has lovely volleys and you're thinking, well, why don't you just invest your brain in this mode of the sport if you're this good at it? But he didn't seem that fast. They are both in very different ways Marin Cilic and Philip K novich extremely confusing tennis players. Philip K novich, as you say, David 30. And I know he's had a lot of injuries. He's had a bad, bad run of it over the last decade with injuries, but still, he's so talented. And he hadn't won a main draw grass court much. On grass before this queens, and then he goes and reaches, reaches the front of one of the most prestigious grass court tournaments saying after every match while I had no game plan, no strategy, and yet you watch him out there and he's so volleying a dream. Like, I don't know. It completely confounding person. And then all the way through, you know, after his semifinal win, he sort of still saying I hate grass and you know this is all just a bonus. I wasn't even sure if I was going to bother playing on grass before Wimbledon is here. He pretty much said without saying that his attitude to the grass used to be just come to Wimbledon and take your first round paycheck. Which is significant these days. Yeah. So then even after the semifinal he was sort of saying, ah, I hate grass. This is kind of great, but you know, and then he loses the final to bartini and looks utterly crestfallen. Which is what you want to see, but I don't understand him psychologically. Marin Cilic has become a very confusing tennis player. Because his peak when he hits top form, it's vintage. It is absolute vintage Marin Cilic. But in every single match, more so than at the friendship. Look, I didn't watch all of his matches at the French Open. It wasn't until he reached the well, it wasn't until he Daniel Medvedev and that is extraordinary performance that any of us really paid any attention to Marin till it should at the French Open this year because frankly, why would you? But he comes into queens, I did that interview with him on the eve of the tournament where he just seemed high on life and I thought, you know, this is, this is a man that can definitely win the title this week. And then who does he play in the opening round? Lee and Brody. And he's just a horrible matchup for Liam Brody and Marin Cilic is playing well. Doesn't stand a chance. It's just you worried about it being awkward. I think it's a certain break and then points for a double break. And Marin Cilic out of nowhere forgets how to play tennis. I know all tennis players get tight, but it happens so dramatically. And seemingly so unexpectedly, although it's happening so frequently now that you do come to expect it, it's utterly baffling and it happened in every single match. And I was expected to happen again in the semifinal against Philip cryo novich, and in fact what happened is he just came out playing the rubbish tennis from the start. It.

"Onto the court. That's problematic and my mind immediately went back to the 2009 final here when Roger Federer was playing and somebody came out. I think I had a Spanish flag and put it on top of his head. While he's on the court, you know, in the middle of the final and I know from queens how difficult it is to stop people getting on the court if they want to get on. If they're near the front row, it's very, very difficult. So I do have some sympathy, but that did seem quite easy to do for her. And I'm sure they'll have to have a very close look at that in the future. Not a great week for Emily Murray, but was it? Well, I feel for her because I think Hannah said, it's about as kind of a baptism of fire. And these are the things we're tournaments. I've had several of these sorts of things that bomb scares. David, 12, ten years ago since David now banji and boots are lined up in the celebrate the anniversary. That was a Marin Cilic final. Sitting there, Marin Cilic against David nalbandian, half the press have gone to eSport and a Birmingham because nobody's interested in the final, and we're thinking, oh, we're going to a nice quiet finals day. And suddenly, oh my God, he's just going to kick the line judge in the air. And suddenly everybody's out onto the court. You know, you never know as a tournament organizer what's come in next. And it isn't easy. So I always try to think, I don't want to be that journalist that just winges about the organization all the time, because I really know what it's like, and it's not easy. But yeah, there will need to. When these things happen, you just have to go and be honest, oh, crikey, we didn't quite get that one right. We've got to go and have a look at it and work out how to make things tighter next time. We'll have a bit of opportunity tomorrow to preview the men's finals. There's no need to deep dive on it now. The doll against rude first time they've played one another, which is interesting in itself. They should have played before. One of those quirky drawing quarters and we've been around for three years and they've got the whole academy. Is that a problem for Casper Ruud though? The fact that it's his hero and sort of his professor, you know, having been at his academy, I don't know what the official name for that link is. You know, obviously it wasn't a dial himself that was coaching him, but I don't know. It's a nice line in a story but is it a nice thing for the final? It's one of several problems. Casper is gone. I think. Maybe not even the biggest one. Definitely. The biggest one. The bloke has won 13 of them. Okay. But I mean, let's leave the preview there, share. We let's leave those appetites wetted. I mean, it is a big moment for him. It's a big deal. I'm sure in Norway that he's got to this final, I was, you know, we always make our pre tournament predictions. I was looking for a way not to have Casper ruin in the quarterfinals because I was not convinced by him this clay court season. I know one Geneva, but it was a much weaker drawer and I just didn't see anyone who would beat him before the quarterfinals. But I was not confident that he would get that far. And for him to do this, I really do think it's an impressive run for him and caspar grandson finalist. I know he's been improving on clay, but I didn't think that was on the cards this soon in his career. I feel like I feel like Nick curios is probably deleting some tweets. As we speak, what's all gerund doing? Doing some tweets. Yeah. Whole career and Nick kyrios are like tag teaming each other in. Oh, goodness. There was more today, wasn't there. You were a sport didn't interview with Casper Ruud in which he as exactly as reported last night in that piece that I read out was denying the events that has happened in the locker room. After their quarterfinal, you report tweeted the video with the transcription of a few of the quotes and hold the runner just replied eye roll emoji. Again, it's just right in the sweet spot. It's all absolutely brilliant. Okay, so more men's final preview tomorrow. We'll have a we did a lot of chat about Sean take against golf yesterday with Pam as well, of course. But we'll have another word on that in a moment. But I'm just going to whiz you through a few other things that happen today. The double is still on. Coco gough and Jessica pegula won their semifinal today against Madison keys and Taylor Townsend. They went in two straight so that's good match this one, but Gotham pagola coming out on top. They will meet the all French pairing of kicking the danovich and Caroline Garcia the back together and they're rolling. That's on Sunday, is it? Yes. Yes, it is. On Sunday, they beat kitchen Panko today in three sets. And I saw an interview with them afterwards. I was interested when I saw that they were back together as a pairing, whether this was a very sort of functional, almost mercenary decision to get back together. Okay, you know, we're not friends anymore, but we're still a great doubles team. Let's get the band back together. But I watched a video with them on Prime Video an interview with them on Prime Video France. And they seemed very, very friendly, saw another it was nice to see. So hatchets hatchets buried I'm glad. Seemingly, anyway. The top seeds 22 year old Sam Schroeder and 19 year old Niels vink, the Dutch pairing, won the men's quad wheelchair doubles title. They beat imani to silver of Brazil and heath Davidson of Australia in two straight sets. This is Schroeder's second French Open doubles title, his first with Niels vink. You might remember the name Sam Schroeder. He was the guy that ended the career of Dylan alcott at the Australian open early on this year in the singles quad wheelchair. He's such a talent for the future and well for now, but I think Dylan alcott felt very philosophical about Sam Schroeder being the one to end his career because he's very much the future of wheelchair tennis and his partner Neil vinc even younger 19 years old vink went to the London paralympics aged 9 and instantly decided that Paris bought was what he wanted to do. He says he tried a few sports before tennis, but as soon as he tried tennis, he knew it was the one, and I learned that information from his own website, which is called kneels on wheels dot com. That's good. I enjoyed my visit to nails on wheels dot com..

"After this after this clay court season at the very least. Now, we've been in all Nadal's press conferences. We've trolled his transcript Matt been in his Spanish press conferences. We can't find anywhere where he said that. He certainly not quoted directly in that piece as saying it. There were lots of people going after that story. Today, Benito raffia is denying it completely. That doesn't mean it's not true, but it's certainly not the case that anybody has directly said that. Personally at this stage I would be surprised if he plays Wimbledon. But I don't think it's the case that that is out there and that that is that is fact. At this stage. But can we have some credit for Matt for knowing the word Genie in Spanish? Because I consider myself a linguist in French and you know, I still do not know the word for Jeannie. I genuinely don't know if I do know the word for Genie. I just heard the guy say something that I thought was Genie and then lampada, which is lamp. So I got the impression he was talking about Jeannie. So at that point you're thinking whales would they be talking about lamps? Exactly. And he was offering him a hypothetical. It all led me to Jeannie. I like lamprey. Yeah, we've all learned something here today. Look, he said he was, he said he was physically absolutely fine. He said, the conditions were horrible. And it was exhausting for him, but physically he's fine. That's Raphael Nadal fine, which is obviously absolutely excruciating pain. But normal people not getting out of bed. Sort of thing. But at least that's good, good to hear. And he's had some long matches. He's had some grueling matches. He absolutely would not have wanted this match to end the way it did, but taking away the circumstance of it, just the fact that it was shorter than it would have been. It's an adult's benefit without question. Yeah. Yeah, I think so. Just make sure to make sure he's got dry shorts for Sunday. And also, I mean, that match was right in the balance. Oh yeah. You know, it was hurting him from the baseline. The conditions were perfect for him to hit through Nadal. It was inspiring sounds, wasn't it? He was making a lot of errors, as I said, it was low quality. But he was the playmaker, he felt like it was on very racket. He said it at the start, Catherine Nadal's big shots just weren't really infiltrating zverev's defense, whereas normally I mean look, I think I still think it's quite a good matchup for generally. I think he does move well in that side to side kind of way. And he can slide and you can get him back and then he's so good with the two on him back on the stretch, all these things, but normally Nadal's got a way to hurt you. No matter who you are, in those conditions, it was really tough. There was only really that spurt at the end of the first set tiebreak and also start of the second set when he was suddenly fresh again. But a miserable life and a doubt really to just manage and get through. He said it himself, I was surviving. I was surviving, I had a lot of surviving moments. But he called it a miracle that he won the first set. To me, he's through his big challenge now. Now he may, he may not pull up fully fed or something on Sunday, for anything can still happen, but in terms of match ups, I think he's seen off the big danger now. The weather forecast interestingly on Sunday is supposed to be similar to today. Now obviously that will probably turn on its head because we were all forecasting that today would be a day of absolute splendor on that. That didn't pan out, but it's not forecast to be great on Sunday, kid be another reef close situation for the sake of all of our well-being. We hope not. But he'll obviously he'll be playing Casper Ruud in Sunday's final who I who I would think would feel similarly displeased about those sorts of conditions and having the roof close. So I guess it's a net, it's a net neutral, whereas for an adult today against zverev and his flatter big hitting, it was a net negative in adult. Let's talk about Casper Ruud against Marin Cilic, David you commentated on this one alongside Greg rusky. Full sets for Casper Ruud, tell us about it. Well, first set rude looked like a rabbit in headlights. He was really startled. He was unsure of himself his back and was an utter liability. You could have targeted that backend and this is one thing I do think with the Nadal forehand. That ain't zverev's back end. You know, that is not going to handle Nadal's game, very well. I don't think at all. Now look, he may be able to play it into form just by using it a lot. And as the sets went on, sets three, four, two, three, and four. He was hitting winners with the backhand. He was hitting it, but hitting it a lot down the line. He was catching shellac out there. He was. And look, he committed to it, and he was using it offensively, but he was being picked on in that first set, and she looks just playing the sort of stuff we've been watching. He was glorious. But it turned. And I think a lot of the reason it turned was rude coming out with a different attitude and said too. He came out to take it from tillich. In the first set, he was just an opponent. He was just he was getting bossed and he looked flat. And you kind of did what he can't be flat in a grandson so you find him, but he just wasn't doing anything. He was just existing as a tennis player, and then suddenly set two, three, four, you were reminded that this guy's got a bit of spite as a tennis player. He can hurt you. If he goes for it, but he has to go for it. And I mean, look, he's going to have to go for it against Nadal and I just don't think that he is a very one sided player. That forehand is great. The backhand is weak relatively speaking, it is weak. How much of a part did Marin Cilic have to play in his own downfall today overseas? He's so very strong in that opening set seemed to fade to me in a way that I wasn't expecting. From around with the body of a 25 year old. I mean, look, he did fade physically to some degree, but he had one of the worst overhead smash days I've ever seen from a tennis player. So how does somebody with a serve that good? Smash like extraordinary. And I'm not, I can't really, you know, I think of when Marin Cilic gets tight, the forehand starts shanking and the serve twitch's start and things like that. I haven't really thought of the smash, and now somebody may say, well, you haven't watched enough matches. I can't recall in all the time I've watched chili's him have a bad overhead smash day. But I counted 7 smashes 6 misses. Out of 7. Literally missing them. He missed two in a game fairly early on. And I think that that immediately put down to his mind. He missed one bounce smash where the ball just about cleared the net from his opponent and he gets himself into the tram lines to run around it. He just smashed it into the net. And then there was another one..

"He will have, I think, tremendous confidence going into that match against Nadal and it will be, I think it will be fascinating to see, because I think zarev bought a really high level of tennis that I don't think a lot of people were expecting in this quarterfinal against alcaraz. And if he can keep those first percentages up over 70%, yes, easier said than done. But if he can do that and also keep the double faults down and keep his second serve in attacking position, he's got a chance there. This Nadal just had 8 and a half hours on court in his last two matches. This is not a foregone conclusion just because he's beaten Novak Djokovic. No, exactly, and you know he's rare of his age on his side and I think physically he seems to be okay at the moment and I mean I do wonder it has this win yeah open the floodgates and he's not going to have that mental blockage from now on. I mean Rafa has a four one head to head on clay against Vera. So based on sort of their previous meetings, experience, et cetera, you've got to favor rapha, I guess, in that respect, you know, they've not played at Roland Garros, and knows where a beat rapha in Madrid, I think, last year, but Raphael is the one that's most experienced at this stage of this Grand Slam. So I think I'm not going to assume or presume that rapper is going to win. I think it's going to be incredibly difficult. But yeah, I don't know. I do want to make predictions anymore, Joe, because they were so terrible before. Obviously I want rough to win. That's all I'm saying. I mean, what was quite interesting in that that's very outcries match. And again, I think was another reason that game was not as high as perhaps the other players other people were expecting was this match was in the day session. Alcaraz has played the majority of his matches so far. In the night session, when the conditions are different, the ball doesn't bounce as high namely being one of them and I think he took, he took quite a while, I feel in this match to really kind of get a feel of the ball and get into some sort of rhythm because again, in the first couple of sets, there were some there were some framed forehands, there were some framed backhands, you know, some really regular shots that you would just expect him to make were not quite not quite hitting the Mark. And I do think, again, that night session I think is very, very Marmite in terms of your in terms of adapting to it and figuring out that transition of how you're meant to play in the day session versus the night session. It's very, of course, has not played in the night session yet. So I do wonder if that was a bit of a bit of a factor in his wing, given that he was just able, I think, he was just, you just knew the conditions and was able to kind of play to them from the first point, whereas I think alka has just quite a bit of time to just sort of get used to the bounce of the ball. Yeah, no, definitely. I think that could very well have factored into it. Alcaraz said I think it has been getting a lot of the night Sessions. I think ammo and rosemary is probably a bit obsessed with Carlos alcaraz or at least certain TV networks are. I know one of my mates was saying that he loves it when really hyped players get their comeuppance or don't quite deliver and I feel like maybe that's what's happened with alcaraz and he has been very, very hyped up. We would certainly expecting him to get to the semifinals and I don't know. I think obviously he's so young. I don't think this is anything to worry about. You know, maybe he was a bit nervous at the start of this match, he wasn't playing anywhere near the level that he can. So it's all a learning experience. He's at this stage of a slam for the first time. So overall, he's had a fantastic places, but yeah, he's going to obviously want to be able to perform next time. He's in this stage of a tournament. But Joel, one player who absolutely performed the other night and also today is Marin Cilic because I think we owe him a bit of an apology because well, I mean, at least I do because I said that Daniel Medvedev was suddenly like the favorite to reach the final from that section of the draw. And then he goes and gets whooped in three straight sets by a chillage. I don't think shocking. Medvedev didn't even have a break point on Jillian's serve. It was so one sided. I mean, it was right up there in terms of one of Daniel Medvedev's worst performances on a Grand Slam. It was just an absolute route. No breakpoints, Marin Cilic won 90% of his first serves as well. He just played a level of tennis. We've not seen I feel for a few years. We know he's a very combative player. He's very experienced. He's been to, you know, he's won a grand tour, but Nishikori in that U.S. open. He's got to Grand Slam finals before. And he's not phased, I think, by the occasion or the moment. And although we all had a bit of fun with Medvedev coming through the draw, defeating some very handy players, but when he came up against Cilic, he just had absolutely no answer for Marin Cilic, I mean, he said it himself. That was one of the best matches he has ever played. And I don't think Medvedev should have any shame in this defeat, but Marin Cilic just drawed upon something that I've not seen for him. Arguably ever a time he needed it most. Yeah, I mean, he was just so dominant, wasn't he? And it's a pleasure to see because, you know, he's kind of been a bit in the wilderness with injury and whatnot in the last in the last few years. And this was genuinely one of the best matches of his career and, you know, he's just delightful the way he was playing. He's now come through against Andre Ripley today in a last set tie break in the 5th set. You know, chillage definitely, I think the overall the better player today, like he really opt his level at that tiebreak was very dominant from him. Yeah, really good stuff. So, you know, Rublev did so well to take it there. It was a really entertaining match. But Chile, it's just looks like reborn. He looks so good, I want to say for his age, but we think about him. He's the same age, I think, is like Novak and rapper. Perhaps he's even younger, actually. I think potentially. But, you know, we think of him as, I don't know. In my mind, I just wouldn't have thought he would get to the stage of a Grand Slam again, but he's actually now, you know, ticked off all the semifinals at all slams by reaching by this one by getting this win over Rublev today..

I will never forget John McEnroe and Michael stick against Jim grab and Richie reneberg on the day after the Wimbledon final because of rain and then let everybody in for free and it was about 1917 in the 5th set. It was amazing. Something strange has happened to David. I've got that on video somewhere. I'm gonna go and get that out. The last one is Emmett Stanton from Baltimore, which as he points out is the birthplace of Pam shriver. Hey. Hello for Pam for over Emmett. Was it Emmett that messaged this on Instagram earlier and said that the only other time in his career that Marin Cilic has beaten Jill Simone went on to win the title. He is very knowledgeable. And thus does that make Marin Cilic his favorite for this title? Nobody's picked that one. With tennis there will be the top performing sport in the telegram. The big Marin piece. This is on you, wouldn't you? This isn't very well for the big piece. Tomorrow right about now. Yeah, tomorrow. Who is going to talk about miraculously? That's my question. I think it's actually quite a good day, isn't it? This thing's a remarkably unbalanced opposite days. It always is, isn't it? Nothing is in. We're going to have to book you in for Monday now, I think. It could be a bit ropey. Anyway. Whatever the tennis will be here to entertain you. Thank.

"But he would be to play her catch her couch would have to be set to pass. That would be the quarterfinal her catch. It's a pass. Her catch hasn't lost Soviet at this point. And he's looking pretty good, isn't he? I mean, I know he played golf and Gotham wasn't a 100% fit today, but she hasn't done this here. I think it is that he does look pretty good until he plays someone better. I think that is sort of her catches thing. If anybody else would like to propose another thing. You did beat Medvedev at Wimbledon this year last year, didn't he? But and he's had his Miami run, but I know what you mean. I don't necessarily trust her catch to sustain that level against the best players. Her catch will likely play caspar rude next to his currently a set and a break up on Lorenzo, sonic ago, stiff Stefano sits a pass will play the winner of tonight's match between holger and Hugo Gaston, which is going up against the football. Down at the bottom of the drawer, daniil Medvedev faces Marin Cilic now who ended Gil Simon's French Open career today and was the only participant in his episode of this is your life. In comparison to tsonga, that was like a sort of a single rather than a double album, wasn't it? It was over in a blink. And possibly a relief for some viewers. I think they really wanted him to lose in the first round on Simon Mathieu, so there wasn't the sort of direct visual. You know, it was the exact same quote, the weather was the same. It was all in the same place. It was just shitter. It was the same trophy, little trophy thing, which is really classy. It's a little cross section of the court that they give them with the clay and top dressing on top and then goodness knows what geology is beneath that. My dad's going to text me now and he listens to this and tells me exactly tell me exactly what geology is beneath it. That's a really nice touch, Emily meres movie was there. It was all lovely and had there not been the direct comparison three days ago of everyone Joe for Tonga's ever met coming out with custom made t-shirts with his face on. It would have felt lovely today. But nobody had any t-shirts, which you'll see mom's face on. I think songa said a dangerous precedent now because he's a very, very fine player, but you've got one slam so now we get one of these, the big three big four. When they're going to retire, they have to go bigger than Jo Wilfried tsonga, doesn't have to book an entire section of court time for the interviews and the send off. I mean, there's an argument to say that roger fenter invented an entire tournament to enable that he could have the perfect send off. Well, the labor cup. Yeah. That's going to go on for ten years. So he could do it. I think that's going to be playing when he's 50. The Simon max was obviously, it was no contest, but the fact that it followed corneille meant that there was a period in the day there where French players on chatre lost 21 games in a row..

"We saw that saw that throughout the week and it was nice for him to win Monte Carlo again in front of the fans, you know, just a different experience to what he had last year and yeah, he's a real real force on this surface. I think the return thing is big, isn't it? That extra bit of time on the return because he hasn't figured it out on a hardcore. He's made incremental improvements, but he hasn't had the significant lightbulb with how to return a big serve on a hard court with those massive swings that he has. He hasn't developed that shit backhand return or chip on either wing return, really, that so many so many want him to or are calling for him to do, but it just doesn't matter so much on clay and it's just so interesting what a change in service does to the sport because it ostensibly looks the same, doesn't it? And you know, if you didn't know that much about the sport, maybe you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I don't know, or maybe it would be even more obvious, maybe we're our eyes sort of become used to the difference. I don't know you could go either way, but I don't mean look at Alejandro davidovich for kina. I mean, since making that run at the French Open last year, when he brought himself to all our attentions, when we learned that he supports an animal charity back home in Spain and he wears a patch of theirs on his kit, since he announced himself he's done boggle as an E as soon as he came off the clay, just different player we went out to watch him play Felix austerity at the Australian open earlier this year on that wonderful new court. And it was a, it was a really great match what we saw, but he just didn't have ways to end the point, did he? There were some wonderful rallies, brilliant hitting. But he didn't have the weapons to end the point. And it's just a completely different sport for him on clay. Yeah, totally. And I think that auxiliary has seen match that you mentioned was probably one of the better matches he's played, not on the clay in the last few months. And I think he lost it in four tie breaks. But coming into this week, he hadn't beaten a top 100 player this year. And suddenly he gets on the clay and he beats, you know, a host of them, obviously Novak Djokovic in the second round, I'm sure we'll talk more about that match, but just absolutely. I mean, at this time of the year, you just talk about players that you don't normally talk about. You know, we're going to talk about the Vivek for kina where we could talk about mazetti as well. I enjoyed watching him on the clay and he's done nothing either. No. Since the French Open last year, he's done he's done close to nothing. And then suddenly, suddenly he's reminding us all why why we're so excited about him. I mean, I still think he should be better on hard courts than he has been thus far. And I think he will be, but oh, it was restorative to watch Mercedes look like that guy that we were all so excited about a year ago before he retired for the fans. Well, I do think that match had had lasting consequences. As you said, I think he's better on other surface than he showed. I think that was quite a scarring experience for him. And it took him a little while to get over. But yeah, absolutely such stylish tennis that I loved watching him this week. And I think for davidovich for kina, he's always been a guy, even last year, when yes, he had that run to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, but he was a guy. I loved watching, but I didn't trust him to win matches because his tennis is so streaky. He hasn't got a great serve. He breaks. He breaks Mary carillo's main tennis rule, which is you've got to hold your goddamn serve. And he doesn't do that particularly well. And it just makes him vulnerable in matches and his game can go off and on very, very quickly. But I think he's really worked on that on trying not to have so many let downs. And I did trust him a bit more this week, just match after match. I felt like he was competing brilliantly. I love watching his game. He's so intense, isn't he? So intense. Just intensely intense. And I love that. I mean, it's really great. My favorite features in a player in terms of what I what engages me and he's just got the energy he must burn up with that intensity. I mean, there's a look in his eye that can be a bit terrifying, but it's also the electrifying. Yeah, absolutely. So I think what I'm saying is that he's managing to balance sort of throwing himself all over the core as he does and being literally and I think there's a Twitter account did focke fall, you know, it's the did Marin Cilic win equivalent and it just every day, yes. I think the U.S. channel. I think maybe it was tennis channel that had it this week. They actually had a counter during one of his matches of how many times he dived and fell in the clan. It got up to 8 at one point. Well, there was one in there was one in his match against Novak Djokovic, which spoiler alert he won..

"Match, just in the moment. I felt a little like had been hypnotized. It's fascinating. I love hearing. Somebody talk like that. It's so different, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, and I can't wait for the match. It feels to me like one that even if it's a straight set win for med that I will be fun. I agree. Yeah. So what about the women's tennis that we saw today? Well, in upset news, the book he's had marquette van drosha is the favorite against the number two seed arena sabalenka. So I suppose sabalenka's three set win for 6 6 three 6 one counts as an upset or does it count as the bookies a silly? I don't know, but anyway, a pretty remarkable win from arena sabalenka. This is, I mean, it's pretty remarkable what arena sub linkers doing full stop at this tournament, really. I mean, she served I think tenable faults today Matt, which is quite a quite a lot of double faults. And usually, usually, your whole game is built around your search, isn't it? If the serve isn't there, it causes you to lose faith in all the rest of your game. It literally shakes the foundations, doesn't it? But somehow she's containing the service yips to just her serve. She sort of hermetically sealed her serve from the rest of her game somehow and it's really quite incredible Matt. I'm all in on sabile Inca this tournament. I think it's one of the most interesting stories at this event. And look, we saw her break down in tears on the court, just at the start of the season when she was hitting a lot of double folds. And at the end of the match today, she joked about the number of double faults she hit. There has been a progression in the way she is viewing that it will faults even within the last couple of weeks, which is kind of extraordinary in itself. And I think you need to have the attitude she's got now in order to be able to overcome it. As you said, the way she is able to isolate it and manage it is incredible because, frankly, the rest of her game looks in really good shape. That's the cleanest, best I've seen sabalenka play in quite a while, I would say certainly the second and third set today I went out onto the court to watch them. And I thought she paid really, really well. And the ten double faults she hit, it's a lot, of course it's a lot, but 6 of them are in the first set, which she lost and two of them sort of came back to back in the third set. The rest of the time, the serve was actually not a huge issue for her. It's obviously caused a problem in the first set. And it's contributed to her losing that set. So it is a problem. But she got it under control, she managed it, and as I said, the rest of her game was contained. And she is now winning tight matches in slams, which used to be something she never really did. If she wasn't, if she wasn't blasting opponents off the court, she wasn't winning. It was a real Achilles heel for her. And this tournament she's done it three times in a row. It's sort of become a little trademark for her. And yeah, I thought I was so impressed and I went to a press conference and she took the energy that she displayed in that encore interview sort of joking and giggling about her game. She took it into the press conference where she was she was followed in by the Netflix cameras. And I mean, she just couldn't stop laughing about the whole thing. And she was really struggling to keep a straight face at the start of the press conference. And at one point, she turned to the cameras and smiled at them as well and she sort of seeing it all as I think that side of things she's taking it very seriously, but she's also sort of embracing it as well. And yeah, she she's a fascinating story this tournament's avalanche of what she's, what she's doing, how is she doing it? And I should say full sabalenka exchange schles grilling on the serve to be found in the newsletter. Link is the details of how to subscribe to that are in our show notes. She'll face Ozzy no Kai kanepi next to beat Aussie wildcard Maddie English two 6 6 two 6 love can be of course the fourth round of Islam with off the back of absolutely no form whatsoever. So that'll be an interesting one. For the next portion of the podcast, you're not going to be hearing much from me because we'll be covering matches that took place while I was asleep. We're recording this podcast a little earlier than we recorded last night's in order to try and get my body clock into some semblance of a healthy place because I woke up at two 45 p.m. today, folks, and that is what happens when I don't set an alarm and full disclosure. I only woke up because I heard you leaving the house, Matt. I don't know what would have happened. I did it. I know. I mean, who knows? I might still be asleep now. Went to sleep at about 4 a.m. thinking, well, there's no need to set an alarm, you know, I'll get as much sleep as my body will allow me. Two 45 p.m.. So I woke up at similar time scattering. We did. We did. I will no matter what hour of the day I go to sleep, I will be setting an alarm from now on. So I managed to sleep through what might have been the match of the day, actually, Danielle Collins, beating Clara Towson, please. Please tell me what happened. I think it was the match of the day. It was great. They spent the first two sets. I actually think they each won the set that the other probably should have won thousand was down in the first set and wheeled off 5 straight games, I think, to win it. And then was really in control and looked very smooth. It was the first I've not watched a lot of Taos and I've seen it play before, but this was this was really striking to me how poised she is on the court and composed and doesn't get flustered. And she was really in control of this match, then up a break in the second set, which is why I think she probably should have won the second set and Collins did what Collins does and dug in and fought and made it a match and stole the second set, really, and then the third set was close all the way. I thought Collins was the better player throughout. But they weren't the brakes have served that they were in the first two sets. And then it all just sort of reached this amazing crescendo where Colin set up a couple of match points with the most stunning forehand passing shot just right onto the baseline at full stretch. It was brilliant. And then Towson just responded with a brilliant point of our own to save match point, so composed big backhand down the line. And yeah, there was just this contrast in styles in terms of, you know, you've got animated versus unanimated loud versus quiet and yet they were both hitting big from the baseline. It was a sort of personality contrast, but game wise, you know, it was kind of similar. And then to win it, you just felt like someone was going to have to come up with something brilliant because they were both playing well and it's exactly what Collins did to backhand return winners to clinch the match one down the line, one cross court at a sort of impossible angle. I don't think she thought it was in because it was such an acute angle she found on the return and yeah it was a great, great match and battle and.

"Went. And I also think Felix is a really good FrontRunner. Once he gets confident and he's on the role and then suddenly he just rolled him comfortably. But I'm still not convinced by Oceania seam. I think he is beatable by people that probably shouldn't beat him. Well, great FrontRunner is actually exactly how Dan Evans described him today. And you've given a more charitable assessment of Evans performance than he gave his own performance but he agreed with you about the how crucial those break points in the first set was, he said, I panicked. I panicked after I didn't take those break points, and he and I think he put down that sort of lack of composure. He put it down to the walk over that he got in the second round. He on reflection and that's the first time he said he's ever had a walk over in Islam. That was not a good thing. He said at the time, he thought, oh, great. Brilliant. But it turned out to be really not a good thing. He said it was flummoxed by it, lost momentum, had too much time to think about the match today. You also said he'd he wishes his taking the opportunity to check out the court that he was playing on today. He was really, yeah, flummoxed again by his surroundings. He was irritable with everything. It was the John Cain arena David. Which we discussed yesterday on the pod and it's different to everywhere else. At Melbourne park. There was also a concert going on outside. There was, although that was the highlight of the match, he said, he didn't sound like it at the time. Yeah, well afterwards, he said that the hearing rocket man was the highlight of his afternoon. He was getting really wound up about that in the first set. And I did think about that. You know, that I can't ever remember him having had a walk over in a Grand Slam. And the pace of these are fidgety guy he likes to be doing stuff all the time. He's not, you know, I don't think that would have sat well with him thinking about it. And yeah, constantly looked on the edge of his nerves out there. So we've got chillage trying to pull off another movement killing in the next round against Felix or gerarde. It's quite a movement tea half of the draw, actually, isn't it? Because we've got Alex de menor against Yannick sinner as a fourth rounder Alex de menor beat Pablo under her pretty handily on the rod laver, arena tonight, he was very touched by the fact that he was playing not only on the rod laver arena in prime time, of course, Saturday night in Australia, but also in front of rod laver himself. He would that really meant a lot to him and there was also quite a lot of adorable dog chat in the post match interview which videos and videos Enzo the dog. It was all lovely. Stimulus dog is it? All right. Golden retriever called endlessly. I've also written in the agenda here, something to do with the nipple, which I need mat to explain. Yes, after they showed the picture of his dog, they showed a very close up video of his nipple because that's where he's got his Davis Cup number tattooed like all of our previous backers when they didn't give their full name when they were anonymous. And Jim Courier asked him about what the number 109 and representing Australia being part of the Davis Cup team means to him and in short a lot. Yeah. I've got it literally burned into my skin. That's how much it means to me. Him and sinner is a match I really like the sound of. Me too, David. I said that to Catherine and got a bit of a blank response. I find Yannick sinner a little bit of a vibe killer. I didn't insure in last year, have to say that's given me pause for thought I saw a different sinner at the ATP finals in Turin and I'd liked it. And look, I love his game. I just find this not much to get your teeth into. Yeah, so I don't know what you mean. I don't want to lay into the guide. Active negatives to say about him. Yeah. You all, I'm pleased for you. I'm pleased that everybody's excited. Look, it will be big up here. And that could be exciting. The atmosphere I think around that much will be exciting. His big ball striking against diminish scurrying is a combination I like the thought of. I mean, I was just having a quick look and it's two zero head to head sinner. One of those being the next gen finals, which I don't know how much to put into that. But you know I just can imagine the rally construction making for some gasping moments from the crowd, you know? Yeah, what David said. I am excited for that. I think sinners shots a girl's been using and diminishes movement is gasping. And also diminish started that thing where he's trying to be the aggressor in points more now as well, which I like that mindset of him trying to stop the other guy taking hold of a rally and whether he's whether he's able to do it or not. Okay, so I'll be watching and I'll be hoping it's a great match. We've got Taylor Fritz again Stefano sits a pass also in that hospital. It is good. I'm really excited about this one actually. And I haven't I haven't given that much deep thought to Taylor Fritz. Over the years, I don't know whether you have it, I was aware of him quite early, I think I remember following the I think he was beaten by valov in he was with he was in the Shapovalov generation of junior champions. I think the year that Shapovalov on junior Wimbledon Taylor Fritz won the junior U.S. open Tommy Paul had won the junior French Open that year and this is Taylor Fritz's first time into the second week of Islam. It is taking him a lot longer. Than his than his next gen cohorts. And I hadn't quite registered that. It's been a bit tougher for him than it has for the others. And he beat Roberto Bautista a good today. 6 four in the 5th set. Right. Passage. Yes, David. You took the words right out of my mouth and he was really emotional afterwards. This means something to him and I went to his press conference and I've never spoken to Taylor for it to provide a date. If I have, then it wasn't memorable. I put it that way. You're both forgotten it. Yeah. He loves it. I'm sure I'm sure you remembers it really fondly, but I have forgotten it. And I found it to be really engaging. And really straightforward and very open and I asked him whether this felt a long time coming and he said hell yeah pretty much. It has felt a long time coming. He said he never doubted that it would happen. But he really feels like he's had the rough end of some draws over the years. He and he has. I mean, the players he's lost to in the third round before. I would say only son ago would be one that you would count as a bad loss, otherwise it's been team Federer, Djokovic, and there's a reason for that which he went into in some depth. He said he said something really interesting actually about it often being better to be unseated in a Grand Slam drawer than to be one of the seeds 25 through to 32 and he feels it's made a massive difference getting himself out of that bracket and getting his ranking up so that he seeded in the 17 to 24..
