"I love Mariana Rivera. You gotta love and by the way, the president having a catch Residents pretty good digs up in court and have a nice catch. He was better than county. Because if you watch Dr Fauci last night, I heard this. I thought it was. I thought it was great. The exact quote was Dr Fauci made Baba Booey looked like Bush, 43 because if you remembered Push, 43 threw out the first pitch Yankees Diamondbacks World Series 2001 Right off the 9 11 he was wearing a bulletproof vest. He had just gotten talked to by Derek Jeter at the time, one of the best players in baseball. He was under an immense amount of pressure. And George Bush president the time went out there and threw a perfect strike to Jorge Posada and vouching last night. It was, I think the ball one about what about 30 feet was ridiculous. Ridiculous to the left. There was trouble between home plate and first base local once again, Dr Fauci just screwing everything up again just to get you can't even get that right. At least she's consistent. And the day before he's telling everybody. I was a superstar. We just high school. I was a short slap. I was a point guard. Also, he is 79 0 So what I know is Bush when he threw the first pitch out while he was 50 years old. How old would you have known who still banging all three of those girls? Good questions. We'll get back to the baseball later. Two guys, I want to ask you about the starter's not wearing masks inside the dugout, but the guys that did the start they were wearing masks. "It's really fun. You talk to people, and they go, it was an amazing experience. But in terms of playing it in terms of as you said, the, the quiet moment before the, the, the, the speaking, that was left on said. Yeah. How did you work that Kevin? Well, don't wanna did what I did was. I went back to when I first read it. And so I become the audience when I read it and I when I read it I want. I couldn't believe that had orchestrated itself to that thing, and I had that feeling on the couch. So I knew if I played that straight by didn't wink at anybody that these players did come you know that's my corn. And I knew that that was possible. And that's what I do. When I look at movies I, I put us audience on my shoulder. It's not like I you know, I I don't understand, you know, people that make a movie they don't understand, or they're surprised that it was good. I try to make a movie when I start when I can see why would work I can also tell sometimes during the process of when we're slipping away from what was good and for his gentle a movie as field of dreams really is you what you really have to understand the fine line that we had to play in order to people not reject us as a movie like come on, and the real in the real value this movie. I get so much credit for this movie and really it sits with Phil. Rob. Anderson, who wrote it and directed it kind of a non athlete himself, but an artist and, you know, Phil Robinson is, is the architect of that movie. You know, I tell a story, you know, and I don't tell a lot of them, but, you know, they kept coming after me, I wasn't going to be able to do that movie I was gonna do revenge. And I got into finally that revenge kept getting pushed kept getting pushing funny, I had to put my foot down and say, look, if you don't get this movie together, I'm gonna go, there, do this movie and the corn. That's what I'm gonna do. And the guy said all sui, and I go, I figured that was the first thing coming out of your mouth and, and we went at it, and I said, I heard you were smart were smart guy. I said, how come you can't figure this out? I said, we'll go to court, you figure it out, and he daddy figured it out. Because the day you end that corn movie four days later, you come to me on my set. That's when I stay at the San Yasuda ranch. I'll tell you that story someday. But I asked the director, why did you hold out for me so long? Why? And he said, well, and this is one of the greatest actors wherever Seaney he goes, they wanna me to do Robin Williams. And I said, I said riot, Robin Williams is perfect. He said. Yeah, but when I think of Robin, I think he does hear voices in the corn. And I don't want that people. Don't believe you're here voices, and that was a really interesting. That was that's a director. That makes a save. That's a Mariana Rivera, you know, to save. He saved his movie because of his belief in an idea. And, you know, not the quality of actor because Robin Williams will never of course, this is this guy, so special, but I but I was curious. I said, he's actually a bigger star than me. You know, you know, whatever. And he goes, I need some of that you don't think voices and that would be you. I've never heard Robin Williams was considered for that role. That's unbelievable. And then you did it. And obviously we're, we're talking about it today. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It had gold dust on it. When I read it because I did that little intake breath. Do you want to have a catch? And of course, I, I worked myself, Kevin Costner here on the rich Eisen show. "Love. Even even my wife sees right through Valentine's Day may just because we've been married almost living years. But it reminds me those little those little candy hearts hammer. Remind me of like ammonia may d or Tom's like the old gym gaffe again a bit good. Good. Valentine's day. Here's the big red hearts filled with the gamble chalk under the tiny, chalk heart-shaped and acids. I know I make you nauseous here's a tomes with hug me written on it. Jimmy advocate, by the way. Not great in the movie Chappaquiddick. Yes. Yes. He was kind of a straight role. There wasn't a funny guy the going back to the candy like from that era. It wasn't great. Like those little sweetheart things, we always associated with Valentine's Day. They're not that good. And you know, what else was awful. I don't know if you've ever bought like baseball cards as a kid these come with a stick of gum on the inside all the time, and it was hard, and you could break it apart and you can hear it fracture. And all it was was a sugar coated brick, and you put that in your mouth and immediately have to go to the dentist. Go down to Christmas market in Lisbon Indiana back in the day and by fake cigarettes. Candy, candy said I think they're made out of the exact same stuff that the candy hearts are chalky kind of substances. Sweet sugary substance all the time. Smoking. Like all the big kids all the cool kids. Is this anything on Tuesday? Mariana Rivera, great Yankees relief pitcher was the first person ever to be voted into the baseball hall of fame with a unanimous vote. Yeah. Now during an interview with the major league baseball network Metallica sent a video congratulating him because the back story here is Mariana Rivera has nickname was the sand man and he'd come out of the bullpen and Yankee Stadium would play Metallica fit in our sand. Man, that was his theme music when he'd walk out like like Wild Thing with Ricky. Exactly, right. This.

"Barria knows a unity everybody else's already made the jokes figuratively allow me to make literally I can't get four sports writers to agree on anything. And Marian Rivera got four hundred forty five to also we have to Serena shocker another collapse. Let's go round the one. That we agree on that the collapse. Yeah. You're the first person, and then that reaction, so awesome. It fascinating to me though. Because the idea of unanimous, you're either a hall of Famer or you're not if you're if you are unanimous shouldn't be more. It's also ridiculous that it's you people food decide this based on your ideas of greatness morals and mean looks you got over the years, but the prevailing opinion was if route Gary Williams, amaze, animus, no one would be that was thought for generations. And now Franken Sola one of your beloved New York Yankees is the first unanimous, Mariana Rivera. How does that sit with you? I think for a lot of the old time baseball players. They probably don't like it. Because like you said you look at Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron Willie Mays most recent Ken Griffey junior. And sure those guys should have been unanimous that doesn't mean that Marianna though shouldn't have been unanimous as well. I also like about it. It's a reliever because there's so many debates over the years. Well, you know, twenty thirty years ago reliever pitch two three innings, and here's Marianna just coming into get those final three outs as we know of the three. Most important port outs of the game. He deserved that. There should be other guys that a unanimous Brian. I believe he's the right person because he will carry this honour with great dignity, and we're all happy for him as a person. But I don't think he was the right player to become the first person to become unanimous as Frank Lu to there have been a minimum. And I mean, a minimum of fifty people maybe as many as seventy five, and we would have who you you could not look me in the eye and say that guy is in a hall of Famer there've been at least fifty people about who should have been in before him. And also, unlike Frank, I'm uncomfortable that it is reliever that it is a closer that auditing this honor because I don't think. Yeah. It makes me I went up to this. I was not happy to think he's going to be the guy if anybody's going to happen soon. It's going to be married. Thank you for your honesty about right? And this is interesting to me. I I preferred your what's going to be somebody a closer because the closing position is actually quite shady debatable. Shady debatable. Right said Cala showed you want to address that. I well. Yeah. I mean, I'm with Bob on that. Not that Rivera didn't. Deserve or anything like that? But the guy he Rivera beat and saves Trevor Hoffman. It took him for a few years just to get in. How can this guy? Now be the first unanimous player three years ago. Ken Griffey junior was three votes short that would have been at least a nice place to start. But, but at least it's finally over with now, and we don't have to deal with this about never having happened. I've always just wanted to go back in time and ask those those that first group of writers, what was it about babe? Ruth's game. You did. Own agreement there. Not make all KB. Now, you've heard it from Tim. And you heard it from Bob Ryan that reliever is not like every other player in baseball. Maybe a reliever should have been the first unanimous that you say what? Well, maybe not. But he was and you know, what he he has come to define that particular role, which is an incredibly important in baseball. I mean, we've just talked about it in the play offs recently. How important a play a relievers have become encloses in particular? And here's a guy who did it for so long. And so well with basically one pitch that cutter, which makes it even more mazing. And so now, you have a unanimous person into the hall of fame, and maybe this will clean it up going forward. Maybe next year. Derek jeeter will be unanimous tick for hall of fame. We've seemed to me to make purses to Frank sold as Frank you'd have the last word on Bob and Tim saying maybe a reliever shouldn't have been the first unanimous..

"Rich Atlanta dot com in my days at ESPN, I was honored to have met this individual so many different times covered his dynastic Yankees. He's now a baseball executive in baseball hall of Famer and on the day after Mariana Rivera and Mike Mussina both going to the hall of fame. But Rivera as the first unanimous selected player, we ought to have. One of one of Cooperstown. Finest on the program. Joe, Tori, how are you? Jo. I'm good rich. Thank you for that introduction. I I have to night. Now, you make me work hard. You know, what I know how to butter up the guest. But but it's it's well deserved. Your thoughts on Moby, the first unanimous selected member of the baseball hall of fame is what you well. Not surprised again. There are certain philosophies, I guess, and on on behalf of the writers that some, you know, don't feel that anybody should go in on the first ballot. And you know, and then I read something about, you know, closer only pitches one inning and. But I have to realize how important those three outs where I could say that. But you know, he he was. For as long as he pitched rich, and I know totals will show you that he really never change the kind of pitcher. He was you know, there are so many pitchers, and especially, you know, relief pitchers who've had the change their style because their stuff was diminished, but Marianne oh really never once he discovered that cutter. He just learned to do different things with it. And and he just became a little more of a complete pitcher. But it didn't surprise me really that he was unanimous because be tough for me to be the one to say, well, let me reason not to put him on, you know, the ballot. You mentioned the three outs being so important when he first started as a reliever it was really six outs. You're getting from him on average prior to wetland in seventh and eighth innings of that ninety six season. When you first got to New York is the manager. And he was a kid that had ten starts in the ninety five season. What did you see the first time? You laze you laid eyes on. Mario Rivera Joe. First time. I saw him was on TV the the year before when he pitched against Seattle in in that final game. I guess it was game five you know, where the Yankees lost game five after being up two games to none and watched him of the bullpen and extremely game. And he, you know, he looked pretty impressive. You know? Of course, then you hear the stories about, you know, surgery, and you know, we had some issues. So he was in spring training was in ninety six and, you know, I'm I'm a lifelong nationally guy and everything was new for me, and we had no options left. So we knew he was on the team there was some scuttle butt, and you know, when Geeta was scuffling all spring. You know, there was some talk about sending him to the minor leagues and making a deal for shortstop and Marianne oh was mentioned in. That you know, supposed- deal. So, you know, he was sort of excess baggage at that time, even though you knew he had had some kind of value, but who who would have dreamed that he would have, you know, be sitting there in the hall of fame at this point Joe gave me a little bit of a heart attack..

"Lives to do on Sunday between noon and eight pm. So eat it and buy some more popcorn or whatever. It was. This is more. Like, you hear me, this is actual arrogance where you come to the public and say. This is what happened in less. Why it has been there yesterday? And then they should ignore stuff. Like, this is not Paki out Mayweather. You're not getting a rematch though. He should do. He should do it today as soon as he got to do it not doing got to do it in almost no time. Tony Romo has become the NFL broadcast analyst everybody wants to listen, really good. He's great has ability to predict what offenses will do before the snap of the ball which was on display Sunday. During patriots Jeeves has set the internet of fire but Romo revealed in a conversation with the Atlantic that he also received multiple office to play quarterback in the NFL this past season is the perception of him as a quarterback rising. Tony doodoo his performance as an analyst. So he was a good quarterback. He was a four time Pro Bowl quarterback. I don't think he was like in the top eight or something like that. But I believe that there are twelve to twenty teams out there where. He was on a squad. He'd be a better quarterback than what they have. Now. I think it is very reasonable for people to suggest that the television booth flatters his reputation as a quarterback as I think it flattered John Madden's reputation as coach because people like, and it was called a genius already. Well, but he wanted one one one one one one I think that if people like you your your flattered by all of that. But Tony Romo was not some stumble bomb. No, he's a good the good. What is a great analysts? I'm trying to think of somebody else. You know, why wouldn't put Madden in there? I thought Madden came riding in on a horse of the booth where residents young cover the young new good people in that Mandelson had a style. Utterly distinct from anybody else, whoever deaths right or him. Yes. Yeah. Because it was physical in its in its own way. But but. He wasn't on the board of a guy who went to the booze. And it didn't help him even though he was great at what he did. And was great Naboodah. Matt Millen, it's sort of worked in a different way. Well, no, we thought Matt Millen was great either booth. I hate MAC Millan. I disagree. I think when Matt Millen originally went into the booth it was very flattering him. And then he traded job with the lions and that was Astra's that was actually zone now. Being good or bad on the field or good or bad and the booth. Tony romo's great booth but Tokyo played golf golfing. Very he's got a lot of time on. The baseball hall of fame will announce tonight who if anyone will be enshrined this summer. The biggest name now eligible. The sure thing is Mariana Rivera will by nobody has ever been voted in unanimously by your friends, the baseball rights that shouldn't Rivera be unanimous..

"He gets an extended his billion of them. So this isn't something that totally bothers me, and I'm gonna get all bent out of shape. If he doesn't get every vote because I voted for thirty years, I've seen all sorts of inequities. And if I get worried about every single one of them then. I think I'm looking at the wrong place. Josh do you care for VERA gets one hundred percent of the vote. I will for about thirty seconds because he clearly deserves it. But at the end of the day, are we really all gonna get bent out of shape and stomp our feet about it when it's the way it's been for seventy five eighty years, whatever. Yeah. I look I see your guys point. I am curious about it. Because it would be an interesting feet if he could do it. And I don't think we should I if in fact, he doesn't get one hundred percent, and they're handful of writers who don't vote for him. I'm going to be I will look forward to their explanations. Tim, and I hope that they give it because I feel like that look it's a group of journalists. You would hope that there would be full transparency on this. Well, there has to be full transparency. However, as we know about you, the hardest part leap for me of doing my hall of fame. Ballot is the ballot. Manage would hand do I pick because every year, and maybe I set the bar of a little differently than others every year. I have more than ten guys. I wanna vote for. So if someone out there says Mariana Rivera doesn't need my help. But Edgar Martinez does in his final year on the ballot. And Fred McGriff needs my help. I'm not sure help is the right word even here. But if someone says Rivera's gonna get a zillion votes, he doesn't need my vote. And this guy does to get my ten I'm gonna put a grip on and take Rivera off. I actually understand that. I would never do that. But I actually understand what the thinking of certain people on this. So I just hope this becomes more about the guy's going into hall of fame. The other than the few guys that didn't vote for Mariana Rivera. That's defeating the purpose of what we're here for. And now that you've said that and established that you'd prefer to talk about. Let's talk about two guys who aren't getting in the hall of fame and bonds and Clements. This is for for these two guys. It's now year seven of their ten year eligibility, and I think this becomes the winner. Tim when we begin to realize that yes, it's just about intimate that these guys are not going to be voted in by the writers. Because and I really don't mean to make this about the particular politics. I feel like the hall of fame voting mirrors. What we're seeing the political situation this country in that there are two camps that strongly believe in what they believe in their folks like me when I used to vote I would vote for Clemens and bonds because they feel like that within the context of what the sport was at the time. I'm not worried about the question of PD's. And then there's a group of about thirty to thirty five percent of writers, maybe bigger than that a little bigger than that who simply believe that. If you were linked to PD's in any way that you shouldn't get their vote and last year these two guys pulled at fifty six point four percent. It might move up a little bit this year. But they have a long. Way to go. What do you think? Yeah. They still have a long way to go and give it the baggage that they have there are certain with certain faction writers, which is not gonna vote for someone with a connection to PD's simply put, but if they get into the sixties this year and history shows that when you get to the sixties with three years ago or so you have shot. That's where Edgar Martinez is right now. But Edgar, of course, at least seven have this baggage that the other guys have..

"Good because you imagine that the average hitter would have like eleven it's one hundred baskets Mariana there. But if you actually dig into this in nineteen ninety five. The first season that Edgar face Mariano Rivera. He went five for six with both of this runs. Mariana Rivera in nineteen ninety five. Yeah. Okay. He's a bad pitcher. And he was like a heading. That's exactly and so take that away. And all of a sudden Edgar is six for thirteen which is of course, still good. But then the next season he went to two with two doubles. And Mario the homers in ninety five to both the homers were ninety five. So from nineteen ninety seven through two thousand four the last time that at your face, Mariana Rivera. He went three for eight which is fine. But it's three eight with three strikeouts. And no extra base hit. So Edgar Martinez was really good and smart hundred era. That is plain is day. I see it right here. He homered the first time he ever faced him and you Martinez. I four plate appearances against Marian Rivera all in nineteen ninety-five home, run single walk home. Run did pretty good and Martinez though through the end of his career did much worse because guess what? Mario VERA phenomenal. So it was it was betting this back to everyone. If I ever see I I I've met your mom before. Now that was before I was on the podcast. But she was there when you were doing a book signing at that Staten Island game event. Right. Yeah. And I am glad that I met her before I knew this about her because I would not have been so polite. Okay. Continuing on Zach says, I was putting some baseball cards in sleeves and got to nineteen Ninety-one Braves outfielder Tommy Greg on this card was Greg fouling a bunt straight down in the dirt. Mike question is what would be the worst cover pick for a baseball card, Adam Lynn's baby powder? Fart comes to mind for me. Okay. Fouling bunt straight down pretty bad. Now. Okay. There's there's embarrassing. There's the I shouldn't say the word, but there's the there's the Ripken card that everybody knows embarrassing in its own way there. Now there you could take a game picture of someone. But then you just so happen to get a picture of him like getting hit in the back. But I guess with a pitch that would be pretty bad foul bunt that says a lot that's revealing. If the best hand, you could get was dude bunting that this might. I there must be like a group of worst possible pictures, but this is this one of the worst that I can think of right now one that comes to mind for me, maybe you've seen this is built Kotas nineteen ninety one fear which you can quickly Google to refresh your memory, and this one I think this is worse because in this pick they'll coda has just swung. Clearly, just just missed. Pitch that is now behind him. I don't know how this ends up being his baseball card. But right. There's nothing. I'm missing here. He just clearly missed the pitch, and that's what they chose. So built the coda the Kotas namesake that's not flattering pick. And when I just googled to see that. I saw that Bill pagodas nineteen Ninety-two upper deck card is him falling backwards and CLYDE ING with someone as he catches a pop up which is not very flattering either. But yet nineteen Ninety-one flare built a coda that is my pick. Yeah. Okay. That one is genuinely terrible in the only thing I can't figure out is whether it'd be worse have a picture of swinging missing or take that pop up and say that maybe the ball is below his glove has if he's has not pop up that might be more embarrassing because you're supposed to catch pop ups. But at least there you can say, well, the sun was in my eyes when you're swinging and missing like, I built the code must have at least like taken a pitch at some point. Right. There's got gotta be bad. You would think all right question from Bruno in Brazil, this is a question related to free agency. And the perception of economics in baseball. He says in general, there seems to be a perception shift in major sports compared to some decades ago when talking about finances player salaries and money, it seems today that many maybe most fans tend to side with.
