"In the box and and that he needed to tighten his you know what up be better at it. The rookie umpire absolutely got aired out by Aaron Boone. A poor guy looked like a high school kid and the <hes> the rant. My guys are savages in the box. Yes I think is now going to be some form of a t shirt already saw t-shirt yesterday I might have to get one. It was truly one of the great all time managerial rance very good and the Yankees clearly really responded to it as Gardner cheered his manager as he was ejected Cohn was in the booth because he did both games on yes threw out the opening pitch of the second game to commemorate the twentieth anniversary three of his perfect game and this weekend baseball has its hall of fame ceremony in Cooperstown New York. The headliner is Marian Rivera and cone was on the team with Marianne Eric David Cone on the Yankees from ninety ninety five to two thousand so what that means is he was there when Joe Torry arrived and as Joe Torry told us the day of where we learn Mariana was the first ever unanimously I voted inducted into the baseball hall of fame member Tori told us a story that they were thinking of trading him. TRY TO SEATTLE. I've never heard that right because you know he had <hes> not shown what he could do either out of the pen or as a starter they didn't know what to do with him. They had John Wetland close the Games and he wasn't a closer. He wasn't really a starter. Maybe they could flip them for something they they held on to him and he became for the Yankees Ninety six the forerunner for what we're seeing today which is bringing somebody who can close the game in the seventh inning and close the game in the eighth today what you're seeing it separate human beings being brought in in the seventh right with closer stuff and brought in the eighth with closure stuff to separate human beings before the actual closer with closer stuff comes in in the ninth Mariano Rivera used to pitch the seventh and the eighth so if the Yankees had the lead after five they would go to Ramiro Mendoza in the sets for him. If Cohen had the lead through five and somehow couldn't make it through the Sixth Ramiro Mendoza would come in in the sex then Mariana would pitch the seventh and eighth in handed off to the to wetland in the ninth different times and the Yankees won the world series in ninety six and ninety eight in ninety nine and two thousand and cone was on all those teams the ninety five team that ended buck showalter's tenure and then he was on all of those teams when Mariano took over for wetland and ninety seven in the rest of the dynastic team so he's the perfect guest to have come on and talk about all this stuff we also have again Torri Cohen and Trey Wingo. Your phone calls at eight four four two zero four rich. I'm sure many of you I would like to talk about the tyreek Hill decision that the N._F._l.. Made today eight four four two four riches the number to dial Chris. What is our poll question over there today in honor of Mariano Rivera going into the hall of.

Without having to. To constantly judge in constantly compare. But, but then again, if we did that there'd be no reason to have half the people that are on TV talking about sports because that's all they talk about is to tell you who's better than everybody else. Which I've always which I've always found interesting. You know now that I'm sitting here with a headset on. That people who are sports writers for a living. Then go on TV and tell you that the experts at football. And they're experts at baseball, and they're experts at basketball when really they just have an opinion. But if you would've voiced that opinion, you'd be an idiot. You don't know what you're talking about? But what makes them experts? While they're there sports reporters. Okay. That's their opinion less. They're giving you facts, which anybody can find the facts to giving you their opinion. And then you get to decide whether that opinion matters or whether it doesn't, but for anybody to tell you your opinion. Does it not? For anybody to tell you that your opinions, the greatest opinion, ever the worst opinion. You know? So I find these things interesting. I thought I'd throw them out there for and now the hall of fame. Baseball hall of fame Marian Rivera. Unanimous. You magin it. Some people are not unanimous. You know, some people not being unanimous hall of famers. Is about as bad. As voting for some of the people that have been voted into the hall of fame that have really lowered the standards of the whole thing. So to be surprised Marian Rivera's unanimous. It's crazy. Of course, he's unanimous. Of course. To not be unanimous. They should stop the voting. Anybody that didn't vote for Marian Rivera should not be allowed to vote anymore. It's like those people didn't vote for Hank Aaron unanimous. You're kidding me. Right. The first unanimous player that means there was some knuckleheads didn't vote for Mickey Mantle. That means there were some guys that didn't vote for Willie Mays. Why what's their opinions? So they're entitled to their opinion. But their opinion wasn't based on their baseball ability was based on prejudice their own prejudices. Whatever the prejudice might be, you know, they didn't like the guy whatever the case may be. So it's interesting, you know, as we're talking about this. I'm you know, just throwing stuff out there about opinions and judgments that people make. And the latest is the greatest. "So it was like popping up. So I'm reading them. And I almost hate reading them because I know this is going to be. The business. I'll tell you right now. My three year old daughter. I'm going to give her fucking pacifier when she goes to sleep guess what her teeth right now, they're gonna fall out of her fucking head. Also, the new teeth that are growing they're going to be crooked because everybody's teeth. Dr mine were their mothers is their teeth are going to be fucked up. I'm going to be paying for braces. Anyway, guess what she does. Now when she has a pacifier. She goes the fuck to sleep. She's living in a new house. She's three years old. It's the winter. She's been sick. I'm giving her a fucking pacify. She's not twenty. I'm not giving my sixteen year old pacify or my dad. He said, you know, what she's like I took my took the Paseo away for my daughter when she was three. She sucked her thumb till she was thirteen. That's not good either about you let my fucking kid through whatever the fuck. She needs to go to sleep. But why not Richard gyms? The other people's opinion of you is not your business. That's that's a wildly not accurate but super accurate take. Yeah. People people talking directly to me about me. Absolutely. Is my business yet? Somehow, it's not enough my business. It doesn't have to be your business. But I mean, you know, I mean, it is it's not it is people talking behind your back is not your business. They're talking about it to face. But no, it's it's like it's not because you have to go out of your way to redeem. I mean, it's a literal direct message. The right messages are only only I can only people who I if I text you is that your business, but you they can't text you they're going. They're finding extravagant ways to context dot extracting to your embracing it you have to hit read to like turn on like the other people who don't I don't follow don't use those DMC or anything. I turn it over having lots of conversations back and forth. But you check those DM's to hate check. Yeah. Well, it's brand new. I probably checked to see there's any girls fucking slide in there. But that's that's why I do what? It somehow people talking about me in to me is definitely not my business. It's not a love it have you regular person. Maybe I I would save someone talking about how you're back isn't your business. It is you don't need to hear that. It's just gonna fucking bother you phenomenon of what looks like pretty regular fucking people thinking that it's reasonable to to message them in any way about their kids is fucking insane. "Later. We're back. We're back. We have discussed recently on this very podcast or listening to shitty players getting into the hall of fame in a relative sense. Of course, relative sense. Now, we get to discuss good players getting into the hall of fame. Very exciting for players were elected in this week, including the first unanimous player ever who by math is now better than Babe Ruth, Ted Williams. He got it. The numbers don't lie which means that when they induct players and Cooperstown, it's going to be this. So be Marian Rivera. Edgar Martinez, ROY halladay and might be seen who were voted in. By the baseball writers of America that today's game committee as a Tim McNally selected Harold Baines. Lease myth, Bruce cursed. Phil Nevin Gary Matthews junior Richie sex. Gary Matthews senior awesome Macher Ron Coomer, Robb nen Franklin Stubbs Gill, mesh and navy Parise. So that'll be crowded stage in Cooperstown. Congratulations proud. We are all. Of them the the four that were elected this time around I actually found it extremely gratifying. I'm happy that all four of these evil are going in the hall of fame. I'm happy. I would have also been happy. If as we suspected might be seen ahead fallen like some hilariously small number of votes short. I mean, he was seven seven boats above the threshold. So you know in a very slight alternate reality. He would have been one God. I can't even imagine that that would have been Larry comes in at seventy four point eight it would've been good just in the sense. There would have been two days of like just every person that cares about baseball dragging some octogenarian that like only voted for whatever shillings like the only guys the only champion on the list that sorta shit. I'm really glad we've seen a win because as as resident Gizmodo media group. Teen, Lauren Tyson said, you know, was saying I have no I have. New real memories of of Mike McShane. I don't I don't know what his deal was. And I was saying, you know, disheartening it was he was basically Justin Verlander, and she was like he wasn't. She wasn't Justin Verlander. But it's it's it's just funny to me that I think especially among this group. He's going in as the sort of colorless figures getting in because he won two hundred seventy games because when you know when he was young he had amazing stuff, and he he was kind of yet a memorable personality because you so bland yet ornery his big thing was doing crossword puzzles, and every story that was done about him would mention the crossword puzzles as part of a narrative about how he was really it was a little too intellectual for major league clubhouse and while the other guys were like killing deer. Whatever it was. He was doing the cross one hundred percent assumed facts not in evidence that they were just like well this man is difficult to be around. And does crossword puzzles sue presumably fucking doctor house, but nobody acted also went to Stanford was big part? Part of their and he pitched in the way that like every great athlete sort of seems intelligent by accident. You know, the way that like it's like surprising to find out that Jason Kidd's fucking drunken loud because you see him out there. And you're like my God the vision, and it was the same way that like it was especially with the Orioles, or he was, you know, basically for a decent portion of his time there, you know, the top five pitchers in baseball, top three brilliant easily and teams that were otherwise completely remarkable. And so you'd watch them, and it would just be like the amount of mastery. That is required for him to be as good as he was seemed, you know tripled because everyone behind him was just these like cheesy steroid era Orioles or just like Chris Hoiles? Just kinda standing some weird place on the field. Clapping his hands..

Justin Verlander Cooperstown navy Parise baseball Phil Nevin Gary Matthews Marian Rivera Gary Matthews Jason Kidd Babe Ruth Orioles Edgar Martinez Gizmodo Ted Williams Chris Hoiles Harold Baines ROY halladay Robb nen Franklin Stubbs Gill Bruce America Larry

"You know, why that would gosh may feel that's pretty fun. Well, I'm gonna throw one more gonna throw what more non non racing topic at you. Because of course, yesterday the afternoon, the hall of fame announcement and. I put out a tweet that it's gotten a lot of attention. It was kind of maybe kind of left. The fact that Marian Rivera becomes the first acclamation player is to be. Voted into the hall with one hundred percent hundred percent every vote every voter every single one voted for Rivera to get into the hall. And that eclipse Seth. Ken Griffey junior who. Fell three votes short. And I asked the question Twitter who who were the three that that chose not the vote for Ken Griffey junior. I if Ken Griffey wasn't a how do you fill out your ballot and leave Ken Griffey junior is first year of eligibility off your ballot. That that was a mystery to me. Always that thing that that nobody. There was always some commotion that just didn't seem to want it that you know, give that honor to anyone. And so maybe it's a sign of changing times and aging demographic the voters ship because it just seemed to be there were a number of head scratchers over the years. It just seemed like as I say, it was a thing where there was a group that that wasn't going to do with no matter what. One. That out. Yeah. Exactly. Well, the the best part of the press release because I went to I went to the hall of fame website. And I read the full press release and noted. One of the little oddities was that Edgar Martinez. Edgar Martinez and right holiday got the exact same number of votes. And it mentioned that in the inaugural hall of fame class. Honus.

MLB -- Why Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens aren't getting into the Hall of Fame

"They get in. But I think it's going to be tight. I also find it ironic that the new voters might decide if bonds and Clements get in. So the new voters who didn't cover bonds and Clemens could decide if bonds and Clemens get into the hall of fame, and if they get in a Rod's going to get in we can start to go down the list. I don't know if Andy Pettitte gets in Sammy Sosa gets in five years ago. I thought this would never happen with bonds Clements it felt like with the old guard. They were not going to let them in because they were the keeper of the flame there at the whole of fame the holes doors open to players who will once thought not to even have, you know, even have a chance here in bonds and Clemens they have a chance a very good chance over the next three years. I love the reaction with Mary on a Rivera Seton. If we could play that that. This is the actual phone call. And if you've ever been around Marianna Rivera that he is who he appears to be from a distance. If you're a fan, and you see him, he's as classy as any athlete I've ever been around as nice as anybody I've ever been around. And no ego. Here is the call from the hall for Marian Rivera. Hello. He's big into him. Who is this?

"Jason fitz. We just talked to him kurkin about obviously, the hall of fame and the induction of Mariano Rivera specifically, I think is the biggest story coming out of the induction because he's the first player ever to get one hundred percent of the vote. They finally got it. Right. If only gave us a hundred percent of the vote, Derek jeeter has also Derek Jeter also chimed in today on the players Tribune. He he had this to say part of it. What he said is the thing I respect most about mo- is that what you see is what you get a lot of people. I've met over the years. They've asked me what Mariano Rivera is like off the field. And I'll tell you what I tell them, which is that he's pretty much the same person you watch for all those years on the mound. There is no persona with Murrieta. He's never had a character that he portrayed. He's always just calmly and coolly done his thing. He's quiet thoughtful intense. He's a man of faith has an incredible eye for detail night. Kind words about Rivera from jeeter on player's Tribune a year away from jeeter having his own opportunity to join the hall Keith Olbermann. It is going to join us seven thirty PM eastern. We'll get his thoughts on the hall as it comes through, Sarah. But kind words from jeeter not unexpected as we remember that the relationship between some of these guys is strong, and it's going to be a very Yankee filled hall of fame. Yeah. Yeah. Who doesn't have kind words for Marian Rivera leading everyone. He struck out. I liked it in the end to where he said and in the end like it or not use just gonna flat out beach. That is that is that is what we learn. And that's why he's a unanimous decision in the whole. So we'll continue to break down the hall of fame. But speaking of of players that may be in the moment, we didn't appreciate enough you, and I were having an interesting conversation, at least in the mind me. We're having an interesting conversation about James harden because we've been saying now for weeks, I think the the sports radio topic has been ardent success, isn't sustainable, and it. It's interesting to me, Sarah because you start to look at what he's doing in what we should do and giving it context and how we will. Remember this moment what we see from it today right now. I think I've sort of it's dawned on me that the best thing we can do with harden is instead of trying to figure out what it's going to mean for the playoffs. What it means for the rockets season is just stepping back looking at what it is right now. And understanding that in this moment, it's great and appreciating the fact that in this moment, we're watching something. Special and we're watching something spectacular without trying to make it mean anything more to the future right now. What we're seeing is something that history will remember. Yeah. You know on on on HQ today. The question that we asked or answered was if you're James harden, what do you think about your team right now? And I said it probably vacillates between holy cow. I realized that there's injuries to some of our best players, but nobody can help out. I'm gonna put this team on my back and get us from fourteenth place to fifth by putting up thirty plus points, twenty games in a row like Wilt Chamberlain. Like, that's how it's got to be done vacillating between that and okay? I'm really glad my team gets it that the only way this will get done is if I put them on my back because they could be pushing for less isos or not letting him take the lead. And I think everybody there understands that this is the only way things are going to get done. The problem, of course, is sustainability sustainability for our entertainment is not that big of a concern. Because even if he does take a night off doesn't hit thirty if he comes right back to it every night. It's the James harden. And show. It's highly entertaining. It's an amazing display of individual play within a team construct. But down the stretch players who have a usage rate like his and you need to shoulder as much of a team as he does don't end up winning a title. In fact, no player has ever had a usage rate above thirty five in a title that you're he's currently above forty up. So this might be great to keep them in the running and to make fans interested and to build up, our impressive, wonderful amazing narrative in view of hardened, but it's not going to help the team long-term unless when they get back appello, Chris Paul and everybody else he does less and the team still has much success. And that's the part. I don't think we know the answer to yet. Spain and Fitz on ESPN radio. Sarahspain Jason Fitz. I think one of the difficult things to look out with harden is we take the current usage rates, and we take the current isolation's. And the fact that you know, he scored two hundred points over the last four games, and none were assisted. So you look at all of these things and saying, well, you know, this is never gonna work long-term. Well, what we don't know is when the. Other pieces come back. How will they all sort of work together? How will this assimilate? And and I don't know the answer to that. I don't think any of us know the answer to that. I'm going to presume it hardens going to go back to just being a lesser part of it's still obviously going to be hardened, but I'm going to presume at that point. He's going to take a little less load and let the guys around him help and more. So that he can get the relief. He needs to be a contributor. But you know, we don't know yet. And I know that's not maybe the greatest hot take answer. But we just don't know what this rockets offense is gonna look like in three months and Fitz. You remember last year we were talking about a lot about you know, how much does the regular season matter in the NBA. What do we need to look to for enjoyment? If we're convinced that we're going to get warriors Cavs again, which we did do we need to find joy elsewhere, and LeBron's in the west now, Lakers, why not make the postseason unless he comes back quick at the figure that you know, what out but things are different enough already that we can look to. Other aspects of the regular season in the NBA in general to give us joy, who's gonna come out of the east, etc. But that being said it was a good plan last year to say, let's not put all of our eggs in the finals basket, let's find other ways to find joy. And if you're you're a rockets fan, and you've already convince yourself that this team is not beating the warriors. Whether that's because you think last year, forcing them to seven was a bit of an aberration. And they're not going to be healthy enough. Or now, they've got boogie they've gotten even better. Whatever reason then maybe you just need to enjoy this, which is to say, you could be I don't know the bowls. You could not have a rule defying game evolving. Innovator. Like James harden to cheer on every night. You could not even be in the playoff mix. It all you could be totally irrelevant. So while it may not result in the title that you want may not ever result for titles for anyone other than the warriors for a while. At least maybe just say I'm going to I'm going to get for what it is. I'm just going to enjoy it for what it is. Whether it worries me down the stretch and into the postseason, well, especially because to that point Sarah, the herculean effort that he's giving right now is what's keeping the rockets in this thing. And you know, we've laughed a couple of times during the course of the streak that he's on with thirty thirty points or more in what twenty six kids, I can have games at this point. We we've looked at it and said, well, he can't take a game off because the west is so packed. But in the meantime, all he's done is helped the rockets move up the standings all these done is continued help them win games. And you know, it's it's hard. I even look at Lakers fans point of like, what can you enjoy Lakers fans? Have this very? Up and down thing going this year. It looked like he was going to be better than LeBron gets are and the young guys aren't playing. Well, but maybe they are playing well, maybe they're going to acquire somebody like you can't find joy anywhere for a lot of these fan bases. If you're the rockets, you can turn around and find joy in the fact that harden is making you relevant when his injured is they they are right now, they shouldn't be I don't think they have a chance at the championship. But at the end of the day, they have a chance of being a playoff team, and they wouldn't have that chance without heart. And so I think you're right. I think there's a a level of like sit back enjoy your tea, and and appreciate what you got. Yeah. And it will say that as somebody who does think that hardens aesthetic can be frustrating because we're not used to it. I have decided to stop being old man yelling at a cloud. And instead appreciate that. He innovated you're allowed to steps. Everybody else took them toward the basket. He's taking him away. Right. It doesn't look right. It feels weird. Sometimes it is a travel, and they don't call it. But instead, I'm not gonna throw my hands anymore, and I'm just going to say a holy cow. This guy is changing the game while we're watching. The NBA Ron roundup brought to you by autozone. Get in the zone. Autozone. Straight ahead. We change gears. One of the biggest Yankees fans, we know ESPN's Keith Olbermann. Gonna join us next Spain and Fitz on ESPN radio. And there's always hanging out on the ESPN app..

"I don't know how you're looking at Martinez career and don't write that guy in. So well, I do think that hear anybody who's gotten to that seventy percent level always gets in. And I do think you're will will be up there. Which is funny. You'll have Baynes up there with Edgar and you'll have up there with MO. So it's like two guys you've got on the veterans committee who aren't quite as good as the two guys who play their physician for the writers. And I would challenge anybody with Marian Rivera. You don't even have to like the same statistic, you can still vote for Marianna Rivera citing for folks, go to era era, plus go to whip go to any other stat that you want to look at and you can you don't need safes put Marianne the greatest single postseason performer this game has ever seen and that includes three ethic. Blowups Arizona, Boston and Cleveland, and he's still the best playoff performer. That's ever been. You know, the Yankees. They won five titles would have probably been to. That team couldn't agree. More number number one leader in era plus of all time and third and whip and the only two guys ahead of them pitched in one thousand nine hundred four so. You can make a lot of cases. But I have a hard time mean the whole thing he was writing about. Well, he wasn't pitching to seven. Did you playoff? Here's the eighth almost every time. You've had so. Yeah. This guy going in there with a free relief in the ninth inning in the postseason every time this guy coming in to protect one run lead. You know through the sevens. To get the last six times. So again, it seems like a pointless promotional thing. But you know, that was the goal mission accomplished. Yeah. I didn't say his I chose not to mention his name earlier..

"Last night i'm sitting there watching luis garcia and i'm just like come on man you're gonna put this out there again i felt the same way and then it comes out with that answer oh in the league reliever doesn't get us always in the ninth inning could you imagine if marian rivera was coming into the sixth inning yeah i say to people that say like yeah use your best reliever in the highest leverage situations will show me where that's done all the time to affective i get it you wanna use you would you want to bring one of your guys maybe it sir anthony somebody else but you know what i i would rather see nearest last night in the ninth inning then putting lugar see out there way my point is like even your five to one last night it's not a safe situation you're still was blowing you know what i mean not everybody has made to pitch in the ninth inning note that is why you put your most skilled guy there i don't care if the bases loaded it's a much different situation when the basis yes game is online not everybody is mentally prepared to come in the ninth inning with a six run lead to shut the door it's not it's not always about skill and then i'm listening to the game and it's scaring me man i love these films and i think they've got enough talent to start building something here but i feel like he's gonna hold them back well this bullpen right now wayne and we'll ask la just that coming up at three o'clock he'll be up next because it's time to give these guys roles it's time because i feel like it's already it's already worked its way out naturally and some of those things change they thinning guy gets gets really ice cold so he gets bumped to the sixth inning in the seventh inning guy moves up to the thinks change during the course of a season but games almost not allowing these guys to settle into their roles.

"You were going to get two scoreless innings as there's no other pitcher in the history of the game that you could start the game and say i got a ninety to ninety five percent chance i'm getting to the third inning guys other teams got zero on the scoreboard is awesome so you have to get i know i know and sometimes yes those high pressure situations other people fold than runaway like you know with their tail between their legs and marian rivera would stand up there and throw the cutter and mown down pun intended so i get it but that was the idea and i guess if kevin cash listening to me he would've said you know what you're onto something maybe let's start the closer i two innings and yeah oh remote and get into a tight game you know and then you looking for reliever you're closing like oh i can't use them because i use them early here think thinking about this what are your in a situation this is hypothetical but you know how some starting pitchers the the most difficult inning for them as the first inning right like they don't settle down until like the second or third inning so what if you add your starting pitcher for that day throwing in the bullpen simulating as if it was the first inning and then you had your closer in there to start the game you guarantee yourself a onetwothree inning at the beginning of the game and then you're starter comes in in the second inning and takes you as long as he goes what is your clue ripped if that happens okay darn but how many times does a closure gotten blown up like that these guys are the best pitcher on your team for a reason but i get it there's the idea that it's not you know how some closures in tie games aren't the same as when they have the lead shoveling exactly it's one of the most baffling things ever like craig kimbrel would come into a game when it's tied and give up a home run but then every time he comes into a game with the lead he's twenty seven of twenty eight and save opportunities and straw with a strikeout ratio that's off the charts but if it's a tie game the.

"In trying to compete for championship this is a team that was one play away from being in the conference championship so i think they're right there they realized that they needed to continue to improve on their pass rush get somebody that can consistently winning one on one situations opposite of cam jordan and i guess there answer to that is marcus davenport and if you're gonna go up and spend a one to do it you want it to be for a quarterback a pass rusher or someone who's scores touchdowns and this was ostensibly the best pass rusher in in the draft i mean this guy's a natural pass rusher he's long he's slippery these speedy and he plays with a big big motor he's a tough guy he's just not an athletic freak he's ziggy ansah with a lot more football savvy and that's saying a lot a double digit sack guy in his second year in the league i am a i'm still in shock that they went that high gave up that much because again you give up a warned you're thinking quarterback but you had him at the senior bowl you swayed me a little bit i in in your description of how he dominated guys like isiah win from georgia who is as you described earlier as big as two houses but that's a hefty price to pay to move up that hard for you know for a guy who's not a quarterback well the pass rushers there the closers that's marian rivera you know they come in and closed the game in the fourth quarter there is no minnesota miracle if they can sack the quarterback that's the way they look at it great point seattle's now in fact the commissioner is on his way to the podium right now let's get into the seattle seahawks i pick after some movement to land at twenty seven.
