"My quick disposal. Things always made my mother irreparably sad. She mourned the loss of my prom dress which gave to a friend the pots and pans. She gave me for college which I left him. A group House I lived in and she looked horrified when wants dumped a bunch of letters from family and friends in the trash for me being able to dispose of things. It's always been one of the ways. They learned to identify new American away to try and separate myself from the weight of graph in a home where the important things that by my family had long been lost. Even though I now know there's a deeper meaning behind my mom's connection to Tupperware and her attachment to my rugrats book ends. I'm still not sure that it warrants having our family keep almost everything that anyone gives us or that we buy ourselves there is simply just so much stuff and it's too much for anyone family to have keep those Off The LILLO favor maybe go to a wedding so you have to all these wedding favorite jet yeah people normally throwing them away or Q. It's okay so we must picking up. What is that? It's like a little puffy ninety-one cotton balls and a ribbon pattern rather luster and. Linda are my mom's brother and his wife. They got married before I was born so over. Twenty six years ago my uncle Leicester's home is nothing like my childhood home. If my cousins ever left toys on the ground they'd be thrown in the trash. I doubt he or my aunt would ever keep anything just because of its keenness they say. Throw that away yeah. He said he had no he. Does he blows his stuff? I have a show to him after reading aerials article and thinking more about my mom and pop habit of keeping everything. I've been reluctant to help clean. Not because I don't think it's important but because of how everything I asked my mom to get rid of is tied to a memory or something emotion that I know nothing about. I remember when my mom and her siblings tried to give Paul a nice surprise by removing the seventies era orange shag carpet and replacing it several years ago. Pope Ho was not happy. I thought I was just because she was frugal. But who knows what memories. That carpet held higher conversation. It's been the sort of just Shrek about people who have Time letting things go and giving things up And for me. I think that it would be great if there's a culture there's obviously like you can't keep everything but I think that having greater empathy towards people who have a harder time getting rid of things as opposed to seeing them as somehow pathological. Which is. I think a little bit of where the narrative when there's always gonNA be some sadness even too happy objects and for me but that's okay. I actually think that in watching tightening up the Mari condo thinks. That's okay too but I don't think that's how the show has been sold and since starting the story pause passed away. I visit a California again for her funeral. But I didn't help my mom clean.

Okay are we going after pit bull or we using pit bull as a subject to go to somebody unwitting to determine okay to be determined I like where your head's at fair enough worldwide Saturday it is college football week seven week seven not a big week of games last week this week a lot of big games a lot of some excitement but yes had some excitement not anything like we're GONNA see in week seven so we're GONNA get your window -tunities some of our headline games got a whole bunch of other quickies that we're just gonNA mention gotTa make mention of some of these games here to get everyone ready get psych amped for all the college football that's GonNa take place on worldwide Saturday this being week seven okay Baranov where do you WanNa Start I mean we should play the sound get us going I guess let's let's argue over this okay I feel so combative as I look at what we would deem headliners I see a big twelve o'clock game the big noon if you will on Fox between Oklahoma and Texas this red river shootout y'all see two three thirty games of note Alabama at an Michigan State at Wisconsin and then I see three begins at night I see USC at Notre Dame Penn State at Iowa Florida at Lsu just why at Boyce Hawaii Boise not to be overlooked. if I use those as kind of the just the framework for worldwide Saturday I think the soft underbelly would be between that three thirty game and the start of the nightcaps so what you're saying like between seven and seven twenty eight no I'm saying between three thirty when Michigan State Wisconsin Kicks Off unlike seven thirty when Notre Dame USC in Penn State Iowa Kickoff that will be I think that'll be your window I think that's a better window than just skipping the first half of Red River you have more time I guess middle of day the Pencil early wake-up right this might be a good weekend to go to bed early Friday tonight wake up super early Saturday morning maybe go for a morning hike Oh do something with your significant other bright and early go out to be fist maybe catcher Brunch is it considered a hike if you live in a state that doesn't really have mountains like if the terrain is not necessarily I hope so inclined you go for a hike in Kansas for a hike in Florida they have trees and trails assuming at the walk I don't think mountains are required for the picked in I think you need some sort of topography I think you need to rain maybe I'm wrong I'm wrong but that's that's my inclination maybe do that in the morning if you miss the first half of the Red River shootout yeah I think you're okay I think learn something new for Brunch if you've never for todd yeah see I kinda I kinda like that better because you have all of the morning to work with as opposed to trying to shoehorn something into the afternoon right okay yeah if it spills over into red river no big deal because I turn on Red River into the second quarter you've got what should be somewhat exciting football and a baked egg dish that you have populated with your choice of innards you know we got an email today again stating that you're bullying me and pushing me around I'm okay with it in this can we sense I thought about bringing up it was one of the most it was it was maybe the pettiest we've ever received which is saying a lot can we save that for the twos cruise I think our plan is to messages in bottles this coming week right we're either GONNA do messaging bottle we're gonNA play battleship one of the other okay no reason we can't do both I suppose it's our show where all okay so we're going early morning window here yeah of opportunity so get your stuff in early morning maybe go see an early morning matinee if you're really old you can forget skip Game Day skip I skipped all the time I know same Bach Fox's I I admit something I have not watched either Game Day nor have I watched the Fox pregame show Oh not 'cause I'm trying to make a statement it's mostly because fatherhood has gotten in the way yeah my question though to you is have you watched any Fox's halftime shows featuring that's same cast of Urban Meyer Reggie Bush I think it's Rob Stone Matt liner and Brady Quinn I have do you have do you have a takeaway a snow APP review I think Urban Meyer is actually pretty good I think all are pretty good actually I think urban Meyer is good and you can tell he's always thinking about should I give really good insight or should I just give pretty good insight I think Reggie Bush is pretty good Leonard might be the weakest link there but I still think he's okay wins wardrobes a little too loud like I need earplugs look at some of those suits but otherwise he gives pretty good feedback Brady Quinn sort of dresses like a guy handing out coupons for Vegas a little bit the little bit of that all in all I mean we've always been fans of Rob Stone so I think it's a pretty good product I would agree and you know we made plenty of jokes early on about how we couldn't wait to see urban Meyer being wooden and resentful he said on the show he's really good and he does a good job explaining things on or off the tiny field I prefer on me too but I think he does a really good job all right we don't agree for Tatas Saturday no worldwide picks of the week all right let's do it let's start with that big noon Fox game high noon they play at the cotton bowl to neutral cider it's Oklahoma it's Texas it is the Red River shoot Daniela double sound game double sound game shirt you know why why because it's a rivalry and you know what you have to do in rivalry game please remind me I had to throw those records outside please I'm begging just throw the records out dog plays almost it's a Mari Condo if you think about it I would agree with that okay situation okay Talk to me about Oklahoma Texas Oklahoma Texas point spread here is ten in favor of the sooners uh-huh I I think I trust Sam longer to fight like Hell Okay and I definitely trust him to give text it's a fighting chance I just don't see how Texas is defense is GonNa stop the Oklahoma passing attack that's been Vance Yeah it's beat up at that's been a weakling for them so far this season and as I look at this game and I look at this point spread I feel very similarly to the way I felt looking at the Ohio State Nebraska line a couple of weeks ago when I'm looking at the numbers I get all the advanced metrics telling me that it's a ten point game but in my heart after getting a lot of Oklahoma this year I my gut tells me that Oklahoma is GonNa win they're gonNA cover this one even if it somewhat back and forth and closer early on yeah I have this one is and I don't do scores for all games anymore but I have this one around thirty seven thirty Oklahoma site suppose if if you're interested in lines that would mean Texas should cover in my head but we don't know a ton about Oklahoma right now the teams they've played having necessarily given us all of the insight on the sooners they started last week the head injuries upfront the hidden injuries in the Backfield we know jalen hurts and we know something very specific about going back to his time in Alabama and that's he doesn't throw a lot of interceptions we saw last year the turnovers really affected Oklahoma early and they couldn't make up even though Kyle Murray was terrific all season long Texas was able to hold on they've they've split the Red River Obviously Oklahoma won the big twelve championship game but split the Red River these past four years Texas is Defense as you brought up worries me but in this specific game I just think it's a maximum amount of attention thing even though the Texas defense didn't look great at times against West Virginia last week both of these teams are playing on the road I mean away from home for the second consecutive weeks I don't think there's an edge in terms of situation so I think ultimately it's Oklahoma's ability to generate more offense and we don't know about the defense we still don't so I if you like Oklahoma to cover this game that means you have a lot of faith in a huge step forward for this defense have some faith but not a lot so I have them only winning by a touchdown only winning by Tush that will be a pretty big deal I mean even my taxes hasn't been good they've won this game I know I think that'd be a pretty big deal Oklahoma has been a world beater so far but season but who who is in their world well UCLA and that's a fair point by cans. You know something that I've been pretty high on all long yeah ever since he started doing this podcast killer instinct blow teams out both teams out don't Eke out a win blow teams out if you're a good team showy got Oklahoma as really given US little reason to doubt them at this point so ten points Texas this a defense that we know has trouble against the pass a quarterback who's played in big games who looked awesome throwing the football this year but has he looked awesome in those big games granted against better defenses but you think about Jalen hurts did he rise to those Iron Bowl playoff tight moments last time he was starting games not necessarily not necessarily but that iron bowl defense is not walking through this door this Texas longhorns beat up secondary and they've had trouble against the pass lawyer okay Bahama wins they cover okay three thirty CBS Alabama at Texas am Alabama a seventeen point road favorite this is an ems fourth game this season against power five opponent yeah the I to.

"Lie light recently told me at climate change and the destruction of this this planet is part of the bigger plan it will rid the off of the glut of population and it will make space for the right amount of humans to be hand it is after all all natural selection assaultive natural old of construction destruction when she said it felt so severe to me too and I just cannot stop thinking about it. Maybe the planet is saying okay enough. Parasites be gone speaking of line lie well. She's extreme but nobody's pushing the conversation phone with the way she does. As much as I'd like goal. It just isn't hitting the same notes that line line can she's dedicated her whole life to all this change and you know what's trumps most just the fact that she thinks nobody's speaking out and she's right. Why are we not all speaking last week. We Can New York kids took off school to protest for the planet and I feel that's crucial but not enough. They may actually need to call line line to lead them March and be their mascot. She's charismatic and speaks the truth. In the one thousand nine hundred seventy s living in the original Venice beach she would pile the kids in the car and head over to the fast food chains drive through she pulled up and the family would roll down their and windows and yell at whichever ill-fated teenager was owning minimum wage at the window. How could you use Styrofoam and all that plastic doc today. She drives the Tesla and she uses it for dumpster diving in San Francisco. She recently told me that people are discovering. All who good could spots but she still does love it because as Li- li- says they throw out all this ugly fruit that is perfectly good to use jams and who knows what else I don't lie even though she told me that my very expensive Cologne was making her tongue tangle and it was is probably not good for her bio. She lives on hundreds of acres in Yosemite and she has roofers the wound. Organization over Ganic Pharma's says who come and work and live on her land. They learn how to go back to the land and this is my travel thoughts. Come into play isn't isn't this. An amazing wait traveled the world like let's go to kibbutz and learn how farming done in Israel or what have we traveled to Bolivia Olivia and see how clients Myers teams employing young people in La Paz to learn to cook with native ingredients in order to rely less on impulse what about going to femmes outside Abu Dhabi and working on them for a day or two because who knew that the UA e even had serious bombing. Tom In happening lies inspiring to say the least in high extremity. She does someone Osh people away but that's what the fringe brings does view but without her will all be ruining the planet every day with hardly enough regard for this life. Can someone one please give this woman her own Netflix show or a podcast she can kind of be the Mari Condo of the environment she would come into your home or your business for your country and show you how to clean it up. Imagine this no no put down. That's gone too much plastic Daniel. You do not need to use single. Use gloves loves to touch that meet Daniel. Are you going to use those vegetable scraps. They are very good for the manure and those Karen Beach Savings doubt perfect coloring my hand. I hope you planning to drink urine Daniel. It's very good for your immune system. We all need a little line line on lines in all my travels. I find it difficult to always see and understand what everybody's doing to save the Planet Lilac skirted of a few places that count me on my travels about Swan Ghana and Costa Rica of course the obvious northern European countries. I've been to like Denmark and Sweden Finland also included in Botswana. They took the country's entire military or defense budget bunch and ported all into conservation. Just think about the impact if we slivered even two percent of armed defense bunted into conservation it could change the whole country Costa Rica's by far the most ecoconscious tourism place on the planet right now with an endless endless amount of regulation around hotels and resorts being able to build and operate on principles that are good for the planet less waste less destruction ingredients they aim to achieve one hundred percent clean and renewable energy supply by twenty twenty five and then I found this incredible travel APP operator Roy Topa they based in Mexico and they offering bio cultural trips were Topi as a platform that allows allows travelers to search for authentic experiences outside the conventional routes they access rural communities especially the indigenous ones with hosts lists who wanted to Shantha incredible natural richness of their land preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Mexico by revolutionizing tourism. ooh Okay so what is going to make the biggest impact. That's probably what we should be thinking about. On every trip we take I try China to preach but rather one to have an open dialogue and try and figure this out together. We could save the planet but first we need to find some common common ground. I faint when I see photos of seals covenant oil my heart caves when I see forests on fire but that's on everyone's messaging. It needs to be something that affects everyone in daily life okay fine. Let's I find this. Oh Margaret Atwood's nook down after all and I just flew out of Gilead had this is the Netflix series you've been waiting for own humans get a horrible disease infected by the Earth from its very call all at once the more you do to help save the planet and whether it's banal recycling of vague legislation it all starts to heal you. The Cure is to help the planet. If you do nothing you just start wasting away slowly dying killing yourself every moment and if you help you may live. Maybe this is already happening and we just don't know it and now let's talk to holly my dearest friend foursome conservation history. I sat here being silent glint for minutes on your phone getting Elvis Costano ticket. I did that before we started. Don't throw me into these are very important things but one of the things that you talked about was conservation and it's an interesting subject because different areas of the world has such different histories of conservation and I thought we talk a little bit about the juxtaposition between Western culture and then how conservation in has been handled in South Africa because they intertwine during the colonial era and some interesting things happen. Do you know in the first national park in the world was created into non on the seventeenth seventy eight in America. No do you WANNA guess what country it's one you've been to. I mean that doesn't narrow things down very much. It doesn't narrow things down on at all Mongolia. Oh I knew this. Yes and it's interesting because there is debate over when people would say historically the conservation movement began. Dan like a lot of people link it to industrialization which is natural because there was a a resultant reaction to that that there was concern over what we were doing but really what is often discussed as the first conservation document at least in Western culture dates back to sixteen sixty two well and that was a paper titled Sylva Sylva or a discourse on forest trees and the propagation of timber in His Majesty's dominions and that was written by John Evelyn in presented to the Royal Society Heidi and that was actually at the urging of the Royal Society is the king was planning to build some more fantastic things and they wanted to consider what that would result in in terms of the forestry. It's kind of interesting because he really does talk about things that we're still discussing today. There's a lot about deforestation in England and his concerns turns about it at the time and he really was one of the first people at least on paper to introduce this idea of replenishment of forest resources so as you're cutting heading down trees for lumber we need to be replacing those trees with saplings and seedlings and it was actually really successful. People weren't like you're nuts. What are you talking about. They're like Oh these. These are things we should think about but really it wasn't as I said until the early industrial era that we really I start. Seeing people raised some red flags about it. Prussia Chan France started looking at these problems and is early as the eighteenth.

"Welcome back to the solid. Verbal boys and girls, my name is Ty Hildebrand joining me as always over there in New York City. My man, Dan Rubenstein, sir. How are you tie? I am ready to shed some some virtual poundages yet ready to clean up my act. I'm ready for this show. So we tease this show on Twitter IT's the show on Twitter. It's something that we've been working on for what two two and a half weeks. Now, we thought maybe it'd be a novel concept it truly is peak off season solid. Verbal the only time of year you're ever gonna find us do a show like this. But we've got a little something special for all y'all this evening, then perhaps you have heard of a show called tidying up with Marie condo on Netflix. Mari condo. Yes. It is all the rage right now. It's a Netflix original it stars. Mari condo. She's a four foot seven tiny Japanese woman who teaches people what she calls the con- Mari method of decluttering their houses. Really? It's a show about life. It's not just cleaning your house, the solid wife really really really got into this with all talents really got into it. She got my mom into it. So then mom h got uncle Joe cholera so into it. This is a worldwide sensation, and it is fully taken hold of my family. So I started thinking Daniel can we apply the con- Mari method to the solid? Verbal podcast. Can we d- clutter the virtual college football house that we have built a foundation upon over many years as it is now a role early April, April fourth were recording this, right? And it's their spring practice. So we're sort of rebooting and refreshing our brains for not just the off season, but the season to common what everything means. So in a way, we're not only decluttering this house, but were decluttering our minds, which is what the cone Mari method is to sort of breathe fresh air for the first time in a long time by decluttering your life. So here is the way that the method works the first thing, you do is you go through all the clothing, then you're. Books in your kitchen, bathroom and garage. Then all your paper than all your sentimental items. Miscellaneous? Yeah. So that's what we're going to do here today. We're gonna take a look at all the stuff all the items that we've collected emotional. And otherwise, we're ordered the last decade of college football podcast from report all on a giant pile bene- thing everything for its support, of course, and essential of the con- Mari method and thank it. But then we're going to figure out what's going to spark joy, and what goes with us into the future or what we're gonna leave behind. So a good example. Yeah, right now, I'm wearing the Georgia Tech Capital One Orange Bowl champions hat that you sent me years ago. You absolutely are. It's still sparks Joyce. So I play this and I'm going to hold onto it. I like hearing that. So we're we're selecting items as we rampage and ransack this college football house that spark joy that the half has to stay in our lives. Right. Otherwise were donating it to. The great college football beyond thanking it for all that it has done for us and moving forward, perhaps somebody else would find it to be more useful in their lives. I think that's the responsible thing to do. Do what we should stop through this house tie. Let's get that a lot of we've got a lot of stuff before we go any further..

A headline from the China business news that way, we'll start a television business this year. And here's an interesting one from the Hong Kong Economic Times that Hong Kong January sales of new homes, the strongest in four months, the SEM has a parallel story saying that JP Morgan has gone bullish. On Hong Kong home prices expecting gains of about seven percent this year. And also this one comes from the South China Morning post is well, the ten cent has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hong Kong science and technology park to promote growth of financial technology in the city. And that's a look at the media. It's still ten minutes before the top of the hour. Juliette? Doug to you. Thank you so much Brian. We'll China now has a range of systems by government and private together and distribute records about people's behavior both online and off the intention to help develop something which can be sorely lacking. Which is trust. Now. The latest system is called the debate map for a closer. Look, we're joined by Bloomberg opinion columnist at Minta. Adam this seems like something out of an episode of black mirror. Tell us about what this really involves. Well, the deadbeat Matha in particular is an app that you would install on your phone in hoping province, which would show you anyone who hasn't paid a court order judgment who is within five hundred meters. You can. You can put a turn on the app, and there they are. And if you feel like the port authority, and this is getting a lot of presses and trying to do this part of what's called the Social Credit system wide ranging system, which is designed to rank Chinese behavior. Yeah. It seems to come under the umbrella of moral psychology. And this idea of creating platforms that will tend to embarrass people is one way to change behaviors there that level of thinking that's gone into this, absolutely. The people who designed the architecture of the system. That's more of a negative view of what they would say. The government documents to set dating back to twenty fourteen they want to promote trustworthiness in society, and that there is a lack of trust in in Chinese both institutions at each other. And so the idea being we put this all out in the open, and if we give the government chance sort of break people behavior and companies to write people's behavior and make that publicly accessible varying degrees. We can turn people in correct direction and promote trust within society. When you think of China, you know, there's a lot of these fake handbags, and they had that milk scandal ten years ago. So do you think people are actually going to adopt this technology in the sense that it's going to be I guess positive to base somebody who's considered trustworthy? Well, and that's what's really interesting about this is, you know, from the lesson perspective. It's just. Introduction. It sounds like back like MIR. But all indications are on the ground at these systems are wildly popular. The most comprehensive survey of what Chinese attitudes are towards the systems, which is done. Now. Last spring eighty percent of Chinese citizens had had actually joined up commercial Social Credit, like Alibaba sesame credit. They're doing one of the things they say, you know, we need to promote tra- society because it gives us access to credit, and it makes it easier to shop some vendors. So we're not getting a fake hand basil more in the market for a real one. So so interestingly is sort of hold in my town, you know, in principle, and at least in early stages are very popular. You know, it's interesting. We were talking on the post show conference call last night in Brian talked about the fact that he went through the newsroom in Hong Kong and ask our colleagues if they knew the Mandarin word for trust. And they were having difficulty coming up with an I'm curious about the extent to which. You know this. This is a concept that may be a little difficult privacy was was the word, I guess he was referring to. But I mean where the where the two may be closely related where you're trying to kind of contain certain things within the private realm. And does that help engender trust? Or does it kind of running position? Yeah. I mean privacy is such a difficult concept in in contemporary Chinese society as the west of it is sort of a right? It didn't really arrive Chinese intellectual circles until the early twentieth century, and if you've ever living in China. You know that privacy really use it that highly value compared to the west. I mean, you know, people live in tight leaving quarters until quite recently multigenerational homes, and you have this autocratic government that everybody assume knows everything about you. Anyway, I mean surveys on Social Credit thing. Aren't you worried that the government will find out about you and people is directly responsible the ARCHE notice stuff about me? So so who here so you know, that sort of ships from a molester context saying privacy is kind of a caused, but it's just not the value that we need to be promoting right now, we've got a serious prices of trust within our society and system, whatever their drawbacks are going to promote it in. That's going to eat a collective benefit. Regardless of whatever the individual. Yeah. Adam I want to shift from what seems like a black mirror episode till very popular net. Flicks episode because you've been also writing about this phenomenon of tidying up with Mari condo that everyone's jumped on board getting rid of all their class. If you will. And you really spike about the real rates of Japan's obsession with this. My theory on these is what sparks joy for me is having a cleaner. But what did you find from your mentioned in finding out about Mari Conde's phenomenon? For a while. And and last week, we we did a piece or we talked to our story of Japanese waste and waste. Was very interested about the discussion. We had a, you know, puts ideas, sparking joy and decluttering minimal. That's taken over net for dates back to the nineteen twenties and Japan. This is just the most recent interational of something that's been commented culture for for nearly a century now. So, you know, putting it in that context? You know, she says she pointed out is going to be a fan. It's probably a fad in Japan right now. We'll give you another fan. This is just a moment. Suddenly getting a lot of attention. But there's nothing going on here in Japan. Yeah. We're the physical. External reality is kind of more a metaphor for the internal reality. I mean, if we can get philosophical about it. Yeah. Exactly, right. I don't think I could say it any better. Adam. Thank you so much for being with us on daybreak Asia. That's next time on here. Now. Stay with us for the here. And now program we'll bring it to you. Right after forum today beginning at eleven o'clock here on K Q E D. This is far my Nina Kim in today from Michael Krasny. Mari condo. Or Marie condo has once. Again, inspired people to go through their closets and kitchens and assess what brings them joy in what should be purged condo who became known to American audiences in two thousand fourteen when her book the life changing magic of tidying up was published in the US now has a Netflix series called tidying up with Murray condo. And we're looking at the appeal of her method for decluttering and taking your questions and your stories about what it's been like to try her methods. The number eight six six seven three three six seven eight six eight six six seven three three six seven eight six and we go next to Robin in orinda. Hi, robyn. Oh, hi, Kim. How are you? I'm well. Thanks. Yes. So I work for a nonprofit in the East Bay called hospice East Bay, and we have six thrift stores throughout the East Bay. And we see that our donations are really increasing with the people listening and people taking advice from Murray condo. And it's really a boost to our thrift stores, and it's also a boost to the environment because people that come into our stores believe in recycling and reusing products. So they're not going buying new. They're buying people's other people's close and benefiting our organization, which cares for people at the end of life. So you do attribute this increase to Murray condos influence, how do you know that? That's what's driving it. Well, actually, people say it. We had a joke. The other day a couple of husbands have been coming into the store with a load of bags in their car saying, oh, my wife. You know, she's been listening to that woman and cleaning out the closets. And you know, I have helped me bring in my those my store, I the the items here. Yeah. We're getting people actually saying it. Thanks so much for the call. Interestingly it does feel like this does have a lot of appeal though, it it does have appeal. Both men and women that more women are. Are drawn to it in one of the headlines that I saw was also just how this even the show. This method is showing the gender divide in terms of domestic duties in the house that are stoke rather present, which is an interesting side of. Yes. That's why I hesitated. When I said that because it sounds sort of sexist or something, but I think it is a divide. I get the men are bringing hauling in the bags and the women are rummaging through the closets. You know, maybe that's just the reality. I don't know. Or maybe highlighting this reality will inspire things to change, Robin. Thanks so much for the call. Let's go next to Lisa in San Leandro. Hi, lisa. Hi, good morning. Good morning. What would you like to share? Well, I am as we speak finishing up cutting my sock drawer. I think they threw all my clothes over the last couple of weeks of with Tom Murray. Marie condo in the background. What started me on this though? With my yarn stash flush moored. And I actually managed to purge or give away half of it. So I can actually access the back into that closet that that was all in and that was hard because I curated a yarn supply over the last several years that what we to the point we refer to as stash beyond life expectancy and. I needed to pull it back to the point where I could actually anticipate using some of this yarn and using it my stash. How are you feeling? Lisa. I feel great. It's is gone through all of my clothes. I got all my thoughts, and my underwear and everything and my drawers are beautiful. I can't say the same thing for the rest of the members in the household, but I feel like writer, it's. By seeing do do you think it inspires other? Members of the household to do it. Definitely they see me doing this. And my husband usually whenever whenever he does like this. He follows closely on my heels, my son does it periodically through the year. He tends to buy clothes and offload them pretty quickly and. But I think they're saying me going out with five or six big bags of stuff out to van, and maybe we need to get on top of that to you. They haven't watched the show yet. I don't think they will. But. Yeah. That I think it I think it could inspire them. Well, lisa. Thanks so much for sharing that here. That's good next to let me take one more call here. Jackie in San Martine. Go ahead. You're on. Oh, hi there. I hadn't heard of this particular method in the past, but I- inadvertently had to go through the process, and I do say a lot of the principals you've discussed or what I went through when my mother-in-law, and then my mother died, and we had this incredible amount of stuff. And my mother's stuff was very sentimental to me personally. But most of it was stuff that she valued and was from a lifetime of travel, and so my sister, and I went through it looked at it. You know, loved it talked about it, and then got rid of it, and it was really an amazing process. So there is something to this. And then with my mother-in-law she had stuff that she didn't value. She just kept it because she was from that generation. And I kept thinking oh my gosh. I would've loved that one. I was first setting up the house and these things just sat in her closet. So for people that hoard stuff that, you know, a value, but they're not going to use. There are so many people that really have a need. And in fact, you know, I did the same with some books because they they don't have books in up in Chico for the fire up there at burnt, the librarian people lost all their books. And so I I sent the book to somebody that would really wants to books and use the book. So I thought that was also very fulfiling. So I think there is something to this process of appreciation and release, and you know, getting on with life. Jackie thanks, and I think Mark would agree with you. He writes, what is so important in Kamari about thinking your possessions before discarding them is acknowledging and honoring your past and your past self, for example, thanking an old miniskirt you will never wear again is really honoring the fun. Enjoy you had going out to the nightclub in your you. Youth the lesson of Kamari can be one of holistic wellness. The other thing that I'm hearing come up quite a bit. Jane Grodin is the word horde. And I wonder if we need to make a distinction between sort of the the mental illness of hoarding and also just sort of the habit of hoarding because I have read that Mari method might not actually be great at dealing with the clinical issue. That's correct. It's hoarding, I'm not a hoarding specialist. But in fact, when I have worked with people that were almost to that point. It was not an easy method for them to consider. But so it wouldn't necessarily be for hoarding, psychological person. But there's a lot of people who reach out and are interested in the method and trying it themselves, regardless of the level of their volume. It's it's a it's not impossible. But it's something that they need extra support with well as much as I appreciate how freeing people feel how freeing experiences isn't how free people feel after doing it. I do have to admit that after I did it a few years ago in especially in the last year or two I have regretted some of the things that I've gotten rid of is this an experience you've had a manual have just you're nodding. Oh, yes. Back when I was doing this process. There was this pair of mint pants, and I thought when will I ever wear this again, do I need this? Absolutely. Not turns out I was wrong. There have been several occasions where I'm like today, necessitates, meant pants and. Don't have them. Same goes for this ridiculous lace top that I had with a purple silk jacket. I use it for prince costume before he passed. I thought he was immortal, and I wouldn't have to pay homage to his memory. So I got rid of it. And now I wish I could just wear it around the house and just remember prince. Yes. And again to manual senior editor and writer of Kikuchi pop and Jane Grodin is a certified con Mari consultant. So Jane that issue of regret. How do we deal with that? If we feel regret for something that we got rid of before. And how do we also not let that stop us from getting rid of that we at the time felt quite confident weren't sparking joy. Yes. Sometimes I think what happens with people when they're doing a major Kamari joy check. If they are not watching how long they're doing it, if they're extending it over hours and hours and hours, it's sometimes they get fatigue, and they they get a little too excited and let go of things without really being intentional. And so I would recommend when you're doing your clothing or any category. You keep it to three to five hours at a time. So that your decision making is spot on and you can listen to your heart a lot of times when you rush through and you just make these it's that's that's when those things can happen. But it's very rare that I have people say they regretted something. So we'll Dave asks what? Really intimidates me is photographs helped me, please. I have albums and boxes and negatives family movies and film and digital and now on my iphone and computer, what do I say? Even what goes it feels like clutter, but no other category hurts like this Ingram. My question. My first question would be is if he had gone to the other categories, I because it's super important to hone your skills through going through the other easier categories. But when you're approaching your photographs in albums, you do it like everything else, you gather everything together, and you put it into some semblance of order and with photos, I always recommend people. Do it by chronological order and then. Start with the beginning. And look at each photo. And if you're looking at a group of photos from the same event say say, you would choose the ones that really resonate for you or spark joy, and that some of the others go just because that will help you with your volume a lot of people are also using the services where they send things into be digitized a lot of people end up doing that. But truly if you look at an album, and it's barks joy, you keep it with confidence. Well, you are Kamari consultant. So I assume you go to people's homes, and you help them with this process and answer questions like Dave's. How much does it cost to hire a consultant? It depends on the need. If you're a do it yourself person and you want to do a lesson for each each category. Only it's a few thousand dollars. If you want to do it yourself completely. You can do it by purchasing the book and walking through it yourself. It's a few thousand dollars over the course of time because each lesson is like three to five hours and that takes. Time to work side by side with someone because the hourly rate tends to be what again, it's between one hundred hours and up. Let's say, well, let's go to Lauren in San Francisco, Lauren. Hi, hi. What do you want to say? I'm a professional organizer in San Francisco, and I'm also a zero waste expert, and I've been watching this show. And I I want to say that I really admire Marie condo. And that she's brought this to the fore. I every everybody that asks me that. Here's what I do has a story to tell know he says, oh, I need that. I think that Marie condu- had a lot to doing to do with that. So I appreciate that. But in watching this show, and I think the part that really sticks in my claw is the the waste part is people are saying, oh, let's throw it out. Just get rid of it. And I I definitely heard what we were saying you were saying on this show that they were seeing a surge in the donations which I think is great. But I think there's a lot of things that can be used that aren't typical donation items. Remind us some great sources just to make sure that we are not throwing away. What can be recycled reused repurpose? Yes. Thank you for that question in San Francisco. Which I donate so many things to that. I always have a big pilot stuff to go there. It's like the games that are missing pieces. Oh, my guidelines for my clients is can you make a robot costume out of it? It'd be broken pieces of things and things that look typically like garbage can go to scrap. It's a wonderful place. If they folks haven't been there take a walk around or doing a great job there. And it's a nonprofit. We'll that's yeah. Yeah. Well, appreciate the call on the reminder as well. One of the things I'm struck by. Jane Grodin is just how much time to expect this process to take. I know that. Before Marie condo was saying that a general overall purge of your life can take about six months, but I understand that she's kind of walked that back or changed her assessment. Yeah. It depends on your volume again, if you're in a small apartment, you can get through it in a few days, or maybe a total big tidying festival if you're motivated, and you have less volume some households though in the bay area. Range can be three to six months and even longer. But it sounds like you're saying that people should do a little bit at a time. Yes, you always wanna be able to put it into segments. So that you can make intentional decisions and also live with it for a while when I work with people on clothing always liked to wait a few weeks before I go back because I want them to see how they interact with their clothing how the closet feels to them. And before we move onto the next subject. Well, let's your next remark Oakland, high Mark. Good morning. Thanks for taking my call. Sure. I just wanted to express what I've learned recently upon a trip to Japan, my wonderful friend Mickey who lives in Japan. Now tells me about something called moss, which is basically like saying grace for when you eat food, and it takes into account the whole concept of thanking the people from start to finish..
