"From Helsinki. It's just coming up to 12 minutes past 7 here in London. That's 12 when it's past 8 in Madrid. Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez and his government have been engulfed in a spying scandal which now may be finally over. Who led the Spanish national intelligence center and has done so since 2020, the first woman to do that has been sucked. The government said her dismissal came about because she failed to protect officials from being spied on with Pegasus software. While I'm joined now by the Madrid based journalist guy hedgecock guy, when did this software breach take place? Well, there are two separate cases here. One is the hacking of the phones of prime minister Pedro Sanchez and several of his cabinet ministers. And these apparently took place around the middle of last year. We know that Pedro Sanchez's phone was hacked according to the intelligence service in May of last year on two occasions. And separately from that, we have allegations that a number of Catalan independence leaders had their phones hacked. As well. And that we are told took place sometime between 2017 and 2020. And those two cases together have created the sort of political stall. And what exactly is Pegasus software and what's it capable of? Well, it's a spyware that developed by an Israeli firm NSO. And the way it works is that it gets onto your phone by, for example, someone sends you a message on your phone, which looks fairly innocuous like saying go and collect something from the post office or it might be what looks like a link to a news article online. You click on it and once you click on it, that means that the third party has access to data on your phone. So for example, we know that a lot of data was extracted from prime minister Sanchez's phone that way and from a number of other politicians as well. And it means that the person who's using the spyware can not necessarily control your phone, but they can have access to files on your phone personal details as well. So it's very invasive spyware. And do we know who was responsible for this? And would it have been too different organizations or people? Well, in terms of the breach of security regarding the prime minister and the government, we don't know, we don't have an answer to that. However, there have been a lot of reports pointing at the possibility that may have been Morocco. Because looking at the dates when this happened when the prime minister's phone was hacked and the phones of his ministers as well, that was all taking place last year at a time when Spain was going through a diplomatic dispute with Morocco. And the feeling is that perhaps the wait because of the way the Morocco works and because of the dates, Morocco could be the most possible culprit there, but I should say that has not been confirmed all made official. Now in terms of the spying on the Catalan leaders, we have confirmation from the CNI intelligence service that they carried out some spying. They say with judicial authorization on Catalan politicians and Catalan activists. And how serious were these breaches of security? What kind of secrets were then leaked? Well, I mean, in terms of the prime minister, we don't know exactly what sort of information we haven't been told that. We've just been told that a loss of information was taken out. We know that it was his work for not his personal phone. We know that it was the work phones of his ministers that were hacked as well, not their personal phones. But again, anyone who even if they have a work phone and separate from their personal phone, they're likely to have a lot of personal information on their phone as well. But I think it looks as if the information was probably being extracted if this was an outside government or an outside intelligence service that was doing this. Was probably of a political or diplomatic nature information that was related to diplomatic issues at the time. And I mentioned that dispute that Spain had with Morocco. That might be a case in point. So Esteban has gone now, is she carrying the can or was she directly responsible? And will the fact that she's been fired, put this issue to bed? Well, there were people who were calling for the resignation of the defense minister margarita robles, because they were saying that she should have been responsible for all of this. So we had Catalan nationalists calling for her head, also some members of the government themselves. This is a coalition left this government so the junior partner in Pedro Sanchez's government. For their moss, they were saying that the defense minister should resign as well. Now, the sacking of the intelligence chief was an alternative to that. That was seen as a preferable path to take for mister Sanchez. Because she was not quite as close to him, she's not actually inside his cabinet. So he decided to sack her. And that was seen as a sort of short term way of keeping the Catalan nationalists happy because he needs their support in parliament in order to govern in the short term at least. However, Catalan parties are still angry about this. And on the political right, parties there, the opposition are saying that this has been a disgrace that Pedro Sanchez has simply used the sacking of the intelligence chief to save his own political skin because he needed the support of Catalan nationalists in parliament. And so what does all this mean now for Sanchez and his government going forward? Well, I think it just underlines how fragile his coalition government is, it's a government which needs the support of an array of leftist and nationalist parties around Spain and he's been performing this constant juggling act ever since taking office in early 2020 as a coalition. And I think that is going to continue. People I've spoken to in the government say that they're going to do everything possible to try and see out of the legislature, which in theory ends in late 2023. But it's not going to be easy for Sanchez. Partly because of this issue, but certainly other issues as well, other political pressures. There's a new leader of the conservative popular party, Alberto Nunez feijo. They have been going up in the polls. That makes things tricky for mister Sanchez. So he may well make it to the next general election at the end of next year, but it's not going to be easy. Guy, thank you very much indeed. That was Madrid based journalist guy hedgecoe. Now, still to come on today's program, the papers from Paris, the latest art news, and then Andrew Muller's madcap assessment of the past 7 days. Though.
