Again, those are some super specific answers to get from just knocking. Also, I have never heard of anyone entering through the buttery. Sounds slick. Anyway the next day, there were upwards of 300 people jammed into the fox's modest cottage. The excited crowd went down to the cellar and began digging, trying to find the bones of the murdered peddler. Unfortunately, they were soon met with groundwater and had to stop digging for fear that the House would flood. As rumor of a spirit communicating with the living began to spread, people from nearby towns swarmed into hydesville to either see for themselves or to be like esmeralda and Edward scissorhands and just stand there yelling Bible verses about Satan and being damned to hell. According to American heritage, in addition to knocking, apparently the spirit was now able to make a gruesome gurgling sound that sounded like a person struggling to breathe after their throat had been cut. But before too long, people began to notice that no matter who was present for the knocking and gurgling. One fact remained constant. One would think a lawyer might want to steer clear of this kind of thing, but for whatever reason, EE Lewis leaned all the way in, interviewing the family and other witnesses and publishing a pamphlet called a report of the mysterious noises heard in the house of John D fox and hydesville Arcadia Wayne county in May of 1848. Now, stranger, I get it. You're probably wondering halfway through episode one of this series, how a whole new religion could spring up from two girls, some ghosts wrapping and the interest of nosy neighbors and beyond. We are at a key inflection point in this story, with the entrance of another Fox sister. One person who got their hands on the pamphlet was Margaret fox's eldest child, Leah Fox fish. If you listened all the way to the end of last week's episode, you'll know that Britain and I planned to take this week off for Memorial Day. But I also know you guys need to fix. So I wanted to tell you a little mini story that I just came across to get you by until we're back next week. This is a story I had never heard of before until one of our listeners sent it to me. And the second I heard the chilling recorded phone call that was recently released in this still unsolved case, I knew I had to share it with you guys, because one of you out there just might hold the key information to a question that's baffled the FBI for over 45 years. What happened to Margaret Ellen Fox? In June of 1974, Margaret Fox had just graduated the 8th grade. Being the independent girl she was, the Philadelphia daily reported that she had big plans that summer to start working so that she could make her own money. I mean, you know how we all were when we got our first jobs, just wanting that little taste of financial freedom. The first small steps to adulthood. But being just 14, Margaret didn't have a lot of specific labor skills specifically. But her and her younger cousin Lin came up with an idea. They would place an ad in their local Burlington, New Jersey newspaper, offering in home babysitting services. They listed both their phone numbers and not long after publishing the ad, Lynn got a call from a man named John Marshall. He was looking to hire a babysitter for his 5 year old son at their home in mount Holly. Now, mount Holly, New Jersey is about 7 ish miles from Burlington, New Jersey. And according to Marissa Payne, who wrote for the Philadelphia inquirer, Lynn's parents weren't okay with her taking a job in a different town. I mean, she was younger after all. She'd have to take the bus there, and they just weren't comfortable with it. But Lynn knew that this was a too good to be true kind of gig. The guy was offering $40 a week for just four hours a day, and he said they had a swimming pool that they could use, and he'd even cover their bus fare to get there and back. She didn't want this opportunity to go by, so she passed along his information to Margaret, who was thrilled at the opportunity. Margaret made contact with mister Marshall on June 19th, and he asked her if she could start in two days on the 21st. He gave her specific instructions about what bus to take and where to meet him and his wife so they could take her to their home. Now, Margaret's parents were okay with the arrangement, so everything seemed great. But the next day, June 20th, mister Marshall called again. This time he even speaks with Margaret's dad. He tells him that his mother in law had just died, so there would be no need to have a babysitter come to their home the next day. Now, Margaret was bummed at this loss of a new job before she even got the chance to start it. But she was relieved when the man called back on the 21st, offering a second chance for work, starting Monday, June 24th. So on the morning of June 24th, Margaret set off for her first day on the job. She packed a swimsuit and carried her glasses with her and her 11 year old brother Joe walked her to the bus stop to see her off. Now, Margaret's parents asked her to call when she arrived, just so they knew she made it okay, but 9 o'clock came and went 9 30 ten. Her parents began to worry, but they tried to ease their own minds thinking, you know, maybe she just forgot, maybe she got there, you got a 5 year old kid, like she just jumped right into it. But they're worried only grew as the day slipped on..

They became distressed. And we're like no so. Then they had women a group of women take them into a room and have them undressed and they check their bodies and their clothes and the girls were so upset. They were visibly shaken and they started to cry. They actually started christ so loud. The that Amy post fucking bad ass. Quaker who basically stands up for people Amy posts like my new hero. She barged into the room and was like. Oh fuck no get goals. Yeah get your hands off. These girls leave this room and she helped the girls get dressed and she's like this has gone too far. Nudity back then was so. I mean that was traumatizing for yes and they were even talking about how even the men examining their ankles and feet was like yes because it that no that'd be like now if a guy's like just let me see one nip. A doctor well a doctor win. Being dr required no formal education like we were talking about earlier so a loose definition of a doctor. Hide settled at a crossroads in eighteen ten. He opened up shop and became a very wealthy man by the time. Eighteen forty seven came around henry. Hyde was no longer live. But his son artemis hyde who was a wealthy man due to inheritance he was a land owner and it was him who rented a small farmhouse to john and margaret fox while their forever home was being built nearby. The fox family were the last in a line of many tenants hides spill was kind of place you stayed but you didn't stay very long. It was kind of you know the next. Stop before you found where you're gonna live forever. Much like tiffany explained earlier. This was a time when women and young girls were told to govern their passions because anger and excitement and all those you know.

Forty seven when the fox family moves to the rural community of hides new york the plan to build their own home in the new town but the winter is pretty brutal so the construction comes to a stop in the meantime. John and margaret fox rent a modest house near the town centre and move in with their two young daughters. Fourteen year old maggie and eleven year old kate. This rental house is small like the four of them have to share a single bedroom. The parents asleep in one bed in maggie in kate and another and while it's kind of tight the fox's are relatively happy. John is a reformed alcoholic with a new outlook on life. Margaret is a super sweet mother who lives for her children as for maggie and kate. They're pretty much glued at the hip so they're never bored. Most nights in the new house are pretty unremarkable. After doing some chores and blowing out the candle they slip into their beds and fall asleep to the peaceful sounds of the river nearby. Of course there are other sounds too you know. The standard creepy sounds that come with living in a tiny shack in the middle of the woods. The wind howling the creaking of old trees. The pitter-patter of creatures scuttling through the night but on a cold march night. The fox's wake up to something different something other worldly. There's a sudden wrapping on the walls thumping on the ceilings and vibrations all around them naturally. Everyone's a little alarmed so they re light the candle and investigate this sound has to have a source an open window rattling an animal trapped inside a woodpecker on the roof. It could be any number of things but after checking every corner of the room and popping their heads outside. They don't find anything out of the ordinary. Which is a little weird sure. But it's the middle of the night in everyone's tired. So john margaret maggie and kate all go back to bed hoping that the sounds will just go away on their own. But that's wishful thinking. The wraps and knox returned for several more nights. The fox is still can't figure out where it's coming from and they're starting to get delirious from the lack of sleep. Finally on march thirty first. Eleven year old. Kate decides to respond. I have no idea why she just starts snapping her fingers and when she does whatever's in the room wraps back at her soon. Maggie joins in and the same thing happens again whenever she makes a sound something response. It's like they're conversing in morris code or something. Their mother margaret immediately senses there in the presence of something supernatural. She starts asking questions like if you're an injured spirit respond with three wraps and then they hear their he knocks. Then she asks do it again. If you were injured in this house another three knox obviously. This is a lot for the family to process. Not only are the all running on basically no sleep but they just been told that they're living with the spirit of someone who was injured. Maybe even killed exactly where they're standing but before they pack their bags and start running the fox's take a step back and decide to get some input from a third party to confirm that all this is actually happening so they ask their neighbor. Mary redfield to come over when mary arrives. The spirit doesn't shy away at all margaret. Ask some more questions in the spirit continues rapping and knocking all around the house answering question after question but what really shocks. Everyone is that the spirit doesn't just talk about itself. It knows things about everyone like things. It shouldn't know for example margaret asked the spirit to reveal mary's age just to see what happens and to everyone's surprise. It wraps a total of thirty three times. That's exactly how old. Maria's and. Mary is speechless when she gets home. She tells her husband what happened and within hours word spreads around the little town like wildfire that very same night over a dozen neighbors. Visit the fox house one of the visitors. This guy named william do slur actually used to live in that house about seven years earlier and he's not buying the ghost story for a second in the brief time he lived there. He never once experienced a haunting. So being a skeptic he takes over asking the questions now before this the fox's were mostly asking simple yes or no questions like knock once for yes and remained silent for no but william wants specific answers so he tells the spirit to actually spell out words. How it works is william calls out the letters of the alphabet and when he says the right letter the spirit knocks it takes a while but the spirit is able to spell out words and even form sentences through this process the spirit reveals that he used to be a peddler named charles about five years earlier. That had been a couple years after william moved out. Charles came knocking on the houses door. The man who lived there invited charles in but once he stepped inside. He cut charles's throat with a butcher knife and buried him down in the cellar. That's pretty wild right. What makes the story believable though. Is that charles spells out the name of his killer. John bell there actually was a man named john bell who used to live in that house. Everyone in town remembers him. But there's only one way to prove the story is true. One of the townsmen grabs a candle and goes down into the cellar it.
