"Names you know hello everyone I'm deal with coach bus Bucks general manager John forced Dante revisions old big right good team president Peter Fagan today then Baker standing tall talking about your favorite basketball team on the court the the felt that around you know you get into a good rhythm and hopefully get on a roll like to finish you off guard it was a calculated risk we thought the young guys were ready for the challenge and so far it's time to go court side with the Milwaukee Bucks here's your host Gayle Papa hello everyone I'm Gail Pablo and this this court side with the Milwaukee Bucks you could call our special guest tonight a renaissance man a gifted athlete a winner at every level an actor a broadcaster a mentor to younger son to become Paul really said it best after looking at film of the best books teams in history Jana simply called him a legend we're talking of course about Marcus Johnson the guy who wore number eight his Jersey now retired and hanging from the rafters adviser forum Marcus Holland is still on the hard court in Los Angeles under John wooden one of the greatest coaches of all time in his final year at UCLA Marcus was named the college player of the year in the NBA he rose to become a five time all star and a hometown favorite here in Milwaukee today Marcus is treating us to his colorful brand of in game analysis on Bucks television and we're delighted that he's joining us tonight Marcus welcome to court side thank you very much mark this is a brand new video out there in the Twitter world that proves you can still done the basketball after all these years my son Josiah we've done a lot of stuff together we got a production company we started doing this dump video because I was fifty five at the Blake Griffin jumped over a kia and the doc had tested that took a little like a match matchbox toy car a little hot will that jumped over that could be bad but we just been doing it ever since then but this year mandate the response Gail I mean we we posted the video one day and then within twenty four hours we had two point two million views at that video so it just kind of blew up in different celebrities around the country and Colin cowherd in after the Anderson from black edition and doubled in the margin of the guy who whoever appreciate respect to show up in a ball be tweeted and posted in cabinet so it just took on a whole life of itself so you know he got the messages that kind of got the goal would be to do it because it be about manta how I could do it this year but I take pride in kind of taking good care of myself and work it out six days a week in and I knew I was going to be doing it this year so actually the last two or three months I kinda typified the leg work out make sure it could be you know I'm still privately individual so I want to make sure that the birth myself but it's a lot of pride in the in the response has been just Adams world hello again ask either of those taco shells still intact Marcus because you have a god man that yeah is the brain child of us said just sad after Aaron Gordon Jeff Toobin toggle fog the eighty one taco at Alabama package you got it I got to go to let's do that we'll be able to feel like a take I would do it I'm a deer and Gordon one better job over to tackle the would panic and it it was also an excuse to get the tackle girl my my data Shiloh but take your daughter to the video too so that's always a treat when I couldn't involve heard something like that Marcus you have the pleasure of following the box up close and personal in your mind one two or three factors are making this year's team of the record tonight a forty six of eight what factors are making this year's team even better than last year three of the team and the the lack of ego and and the and the complete body and everybody wants to get things up talking to way guys who never and and so that starts with the coaching staff guild and coach Boone holder and his assistants Darvin ham and Patrick Kane and do the bit Sullivan gas logs that let me just on down the line they do a tremendous job in Baker up up up up analyzing the playing experience for the players and really taken the time to call the baby daily vitamins will spend twenty minutes every single day with a select group of that they're responsible for each coach any the talk on the phone talking office do some work on the court look at some still talk about like mentor you know just really really positive interaction and with that leads to is is relationships which leads to trust which leaves the guys really buying into what coach coach would also wants to do and that starts with deep at that so you look at in terms of this team and the whole team below forty five percent of the bill they just got incredible record this season I think thirty six and three at at this point so the late when you you know that the office currently does the deepest travels and put the third to always allow you to be in a game it took the office kind of shows up and come to route and because the consistent point generator that that that we all know it could become but the but it starts with deep rooted that starts with trust and that is developed through great in a personal relationship but this coaching staff yeah I mean can the twelve times do the course of a season they'll have an evening that they call breaking bread after tough game issues with the game that that we're going to you know possibly lose or at least be in it in a tough ball gave a really good team coach with older staff will will identify you know five star restaurant given the still open late and then the guys know media nobody else involved but the guys the coaches and then the other person know that works with the guide to training staff the go out to dinner after game to just just interact with each other and have only to the left but you get the gist just get away from basketball to those kinds of things that really believe help to develop the kind of chemistry that we're seeing in terms of what this team is able to do on the basketball court his name Marcus you know going back to the all star game on this past Sunday in the fourth quarter you'll recall we saw something pretty interesting for much of the fourth quarter Yanis was up against lebron James and as you know they really went at it and with the way Yanis play defense I wondered Marcus if we were seeing the early signs of a changing of the guard atop the NBA EE and yes Yanis yeah this is impact at the debate to pull into the for that game was spectacular the new black liberal arts fade away jumper in the left corner and then that block behind we we ran him down and did a great job of getting to the basketball just before it got to the back board so it was not a a goaltending violation which was born out through replay and the the official take a closer look at it so I think that right at this moment is is what I've been saying I mean he's one of the most impressed that depict the players in the league and you saw that on full display in the all star game in that game tightened up and that was a great great format beautiful idea executed perfectly we just had the guys I have a target score fifty seven points no time limit and just played out and so I think it if they do that in the future the coaches will understand better how to use up to two shows a little bit but I think everybody kind of play the whole fourth quarter and the guys got a little bit more particular others but Jana stood out as as the Primera detect the player during that stretch we're talking about guys like Kawhi Leonard lebron James in after the Davis a deal to be.

"Wreck. That sounds the Milwaukee Bucks gonna win the world championship. Oh, wow. Wait, wait, wait. They got win at all. They're gonna win at all. I hope is predictions. You're better than his golf swing. Always makes me nervous though. When people say that like when my mother used to make make an accomplishment or something. But we were we were kids, and we tell mom about it. And she say that's great don't let it go to your head. Parents rose good at that were just a little bit. I come home with my report card. He what's with the C never mind the six as this. Yeah. Doug. Is there anything to this other the jank's? I've always believed that you can only jinx something that you want to have happen and Charles Barkley Barkley doesn't really have any skin in the game. He's got to pick somebody. So if it's like, for example, Paul Pierce who early in the series as an analyst Celtic tap is hands down. Well, he was a former Celtic, and he jinxed himself if it were saying, Marcus Johnson or someone like that on the national broadcast proclaiming the bucks to be the champions of the NBA just jinx yourself. So that's just the gods sports. And that's that's science. Yes, it sign. Got to play the game in the NHL. You'd never I don't think at any sport. Really? But the NHL in particular the Stanley Cup is all over the place. It's ubiquitous but you'll never see a coach or a player touched the Stanley Cup. Until after the playoffs are done all know again science. I mean, it's like you don't step on the logo in the middle of the dressing room. Either. You don't miss a win streak? No, no. Seventy five so they win the title Bill Walton had left and they came back, and they win the title, and he retires, and he probably could've stayed other. You know as long as you want it. Yeah. So dominant. Although that's why you should never you know, there's that old saying you should never make major decisions while you're mad. You're mad. He said looking back, right deem L one day. And then look at it the next morning and see if you actually I always send it to like you or Lisa. Yeah. Yeah. If I sent an Email that I know that I'm really getting on somebody about I go, I need I used to say this to John black. I would say I need another set of eyes on this. Can you look at this for me? 'cause I knew there's a few you do this lease through this John would do it. There's only a handful of people in my life will tell me the truth. No matter what right. And at that point. John wooden was on top of the world. Oh, yeah. And if you talk to the guys who. I've written books about would you guys like Andy hill and we've had on the show over the years. They'll tell you that was that was rare that he would make a decision like that. When he was mad. But he admitted a longtime after he was ready to get off the ride. He was mad. He gets somebody snapped at him. And he said all right, then I quit. Yup. And Maria condo is rhino like condominium. Marie condo. She's the Japanese lady on is a Netflix. Yes. On netflix. Who tells you to organize your house? Do you don't are. Oh my God. You got to watch this craziest thing. So what what are you saying? It's garbage. No. It's not it. No. Oh, wait a minute twice today for you. Yeah. First of all, you said, you know, people that don't think I'm sorry is funny. I haven't seen the show. So I'm just saying what people are telling me anybody who tells you what it does. I'm sorry is funny is has no sense of what people are saying yell, which people who might my friends saying and high disciple size. Friends wife is a television executive, you're right. And she does not. So this is based on your friend's wife himbal or saying your friend's wife is going to be in another line of work thinks I'm sorry. It's not twice because I've never seen the shows. I don't anything about condo is nonsense. No, it's not. It's not. So basically, she she's like a she. She comes home in some ways into somebody's house, and she occurrences them to get rid of the stuff that doesn't spark joy sh. So I go through somebody's closet. Does this shirt spark joint? No, send a rule that. If you don't if I didn't wear it for a twelve month period. It went on probation the NF. I did it on a didn't work for two years in a row out. So I read a Wall Street Journal story that said donations to goodwill and Salvation Army are up forty five percent this year. I tended is. All Marie con. I take at least one big bucks a year to good-will. Yeah. So Marie condo. Does though. She walks in and tells you. If a translator through a trainer translator, she says, take everything all wait a minute close. But everything shows in subtitles. No, there's a translator they're playing. Yeah. She talks and the translator says, it takes all of their stuff all of your clothes, everything and puts it on a bed and says, okay, now go through every single piece of clothing that you have. And if it doesn't spark joy get rid of it. And then she leaves she leaves. And then she comes back. Okay. It's great conscious completely. And then she says, okay. Let's go through all your shoes or all your extra need around here. She doesn't do anything. Yeah. Just says if you don't like it get rid of it did and then walks away. Marie condo was involved in all the changes in NAFTA. Noon drive over the year. Nothing kind of say sparked joy joy to brain around here. I mean, come on more joyful than some of the other stuff marks joy for for Ramona..

"They are in a time. When there's this notion that you got a stockpile superstars, okay? They have one superstar exactly one Jaanus under compo-. Now. Chris Middleton fine player. But they have one superstar annexed a. Coach in Mike Boone Holzer, and and to me of all the regular season stories other than the collapse of the Lakers. You tell me a better one than the Milwaukee Bucks, a small market team becoming this kind of big story. And boy it's been a long time coming thirty. We've both remember what Milwaukee was like one day wells ball town. Yeah. Yeah. It was always thirty years Wesley. They had a nice they were there were cursed in the eighties to be the be student. I said that team, you know, the eighties. Four teams won championships in the eighties to Lakers to Celtics the seventy Sixers into pistons, but lurking in the in the in the weeds, there was a nice Milwaukee team. And I said of that team in the time it was the classic be student. They they drank their milk to the bottom of the glass. They looked both ways before crossing the study. They busted there s buddying, and they gotta be in the exam, and they couldn't they couldn't get behind beyond the Celtics the seventy Sixers, and it was nice team to Marcus Johnson team. So and Sydney Moncrieff teams. Anyway. And then Mike since then once when web we ever thought about the Milwaukee Bucks in the ensuing thirty years right now. And until now until now, and it's a great story. It's just great fifty and seventeen. It's just a great story when they get to the offs and the finally get equal billing and announce talking about them, you're gonna find how many interesting players there are on this team. Let me give you one right now that was overlooked in the draft. And I'm going to say, I raise my hand. And I got him. I got empirical proof of you know. Got I called one got one right? And don't get many got one zero. Yep. There you go bogged in teams should have first of all the guy was put on earth to be a spur. All right. Well, he didn't get the Spurs. But guess what? The the bucks are starting to become a spur team, Malcolm Brogdon, it not a star. And he is a glue guy. If there ever was glue guy is one of the most intriguing people in the entire national association. He gets out of a great school UVA with two degrees for even twenty two years of age, and he's as remarkable young man, and he's a very solid beautiful basketball player would have been a home in the nineteen fifty sixty seventy eighty nineties or probably twenty to ten he just is basketball person on the court and of strike, but Malcolm brogden, I'm so happy for him. Well, they're gonna be with him with Middleton with Bledsoe. With Dante Vicenzo all these guys. They're going to be the antithesis of the teams that are going to be favored when the when the playoffs start. The the trios the quads of the warriors and Houston, and you know, the superstar club teams versus one superstar Jonah's whose budding still we don't know the upside of him, and then you know, then a cast a cast. But as you pointed out a cast that knows its roles, you know, and actually plays like a team. This is for guys like us. This is this is the kind of group that we root for because it embodies a sense of let's come together and be better as five than we were if we were three apart on three different teams. And and and that's what they're doing. And we'll see how far it gets. I mean, you know, we've seen many great regular seasons by new upstart teams disappear in the first round of playoffs. But I you know, I'm hoping and seen as Johnny's played in the all star game. And some of the other stuff. I don't think he's easily overwhelmed, and I think they're gonna make some noise and look who they just picked up. I mean. Powell Saul is is a playoff player. And I mean they lost to the Spurs this weekend. But he you know, he he came off the bench is playing fifteen minutes..

It's obviously quite nice in here outside the pain of glass. I've got the field in front of me. It is covered up because it's freezing outside. It's about what I don't know what rusty said, but it's probably hovering in the single digits or pretty close to the single digits. It is quite chilly outside. But. Hey, you know, what come on inside have a beer have a diet coke have a smile? Listen to the rhythm kings. They're on break right now. Don Agassi floating around here. Somewhere brewers alumnus and. Yeah. What is it about Saint John's, by the way, they knocked off Marquette again this time in the women's game. Nightmares about the red storm Marquette the men's team has two losses in conference both to Saint John's now the Marquette women their first conference lost comes to the red storm as well. So. You see them on the schedule this year just run for the hills. All right final hour. What have some fun here in this final hour of the program because of a couple of things number one as watching the celebrity all star game from the NBA festivities in Charlotte. And Ray Allen was playing Man Ray Allen reality was I mean, a generational type player the box had and then gave away right as he was entering his prime. You can't do that. But I think for a lot of bucks fans of that age. You might have been there guy. I'm a little bit older. I wouldn't say that I had a that guy that was playing in the nineties but in the seventies eighties. I had a couple of people that I would say we're my guy Marcus Johnson who is one of the finalists for the hall of fame as you just heard from rusty Mellberg couple minutes ago along with sitting mockery. Volvos guys, maybe especially city because he was with the bucks a little bit longer than Marcus Johnson. Was of course, Marcus Johnson part of the big Terry Cummings trade that was good for the box because not only netted Milwaukee Jerry Cummings as he was entering his prime. And he was obviously a great player, but also Ricky Pierce and Craig Hodges, Ricky.

"Sure fans listeners WTMJ have heard of the box. They've been big thing. They're good this year, you correctly, Scott worse that they're very good. So good. They've clinched a winning season already think about that. It's February the twelfth they clinched that winning season with a one twelve to ninety nine win over the Chicago Bulls last night it was their forty second victory of the year. Jaanus gumbo. Looked like his MVP caliber self twenty nine point seventeen boards, eight assists for the Greek freak Milwaukee able to earn that victory without their newest player. Nikola miratec the big man quired at last week's trade deadline missed last night's game for precautionary reasons been dealing with a lower leg injury, not super serious, but the bucks just being cautious and bucks legend, Marcus Johnson. Joined the Brian de show my show on ninety four or five. Yes. PFM a little bit earlier. This morning to explain just how important mirror Tich might be the bucks when he's healthy. But one concern that I had was with addressed with the acquisition of Nico mirror. And that was having a of some great outside shooting. Happened a specialist. Second command like a towel Forber, Wayne Ellington type of guy that could come in and knock down. But also having some guys with the playoff experience with guys ever playoff, tested and American. You get all those rolled up into one that is Marcus Johnson on ninety four or five ESPN FM a little bit earlier this morning can catch that interview right now in the pod centered ESPN, Wisconsin dot com. Our sister stations website, just one more game left before the all-star break for the forty two in fourteen bucks. "It didn't for a bucket, but he changed the dynamic of that game defensively with his hustle energy. And then the ability for this team going small to switch everything out on the perimeter. And he's totally just baffled Charlotte. That was the reason why we won that game. So the moves that coach, but mayor nurture these players, I think it's a real real real reason for this team success at this point. We only got a few seconds left with Margaret's formula two. We saw the news from Rosia about Don makers representatives haven't talked to the organization about maybe a trade for him. So can you? Give us some insight into into why that relationship seems to have run. Its course, I'll tell you. Why did they Wilson a DJ come on from Michigan? And he's played his behind off it. He's he's usurping most of the ministers. Tom is getting frustrated right now. But the one thing that kind of preaches to these guys is just stay ready because you never know when you're gonna be called upon and that's why I think he's frustrated and feels like he can you know, maybe have an opportunity to play more someplace else. But I think you know, if you just kinda you kinda hold steady team doesn't knee jerk. And just doesn't just because he's asking me to do it. He's gonna have this moment. He's just got to go ahead and try and persevere just for this little momentary setback that he's going through Marcus Johnson bucks. TV analysts all-time UCLA great and about to have his jersey retired by the bucks organization coming in March, Marcus appreciate the time as always keep collecting them checks for white may jumped I'm about to say take off that mask and put down that gun. Pretty good of that. But they said appreciated, Marcus. The Mike eaves and Smith I love that movie, by the way, when the best cameos ever often think he gets that all the time. You know, what though like the movies, you know, now like us. So he may not get as often he's, but he's taking those checks going are going to my car. Get my gun. Sudha? "Program. Sports central presented by Miller lite before we get to nine o'clock. What are we play? At sunk of our interview with bucks legend, Marcus Johnson, who joins us from the six o'clock hour had some interesting things to say about the bucks and also asked him about white men can't jump. Remember that movie from nineteen Ninety-two Marcus was in it. He had a cameo. He was Raymond Raymond had a bit of a temper Marcus is a pretty good actor. We'll ask him about that. Or we did ask him about that. We'll replay a chunk of that coming up in our next segment you'd like to join us on the program. It's four one four seven nine nine one six twenty. I do want to continue with the bucks conversation here as you starting to reach that territory in the season where you really starting to look at the bucks as one of the elite teams in the league. And it started off as as nice hot start boy with the team is looking great under Mike booed and Holzer and. Figured there'd be a little bit of an adjustment period. As teams started to figure the bucks out with a new system with the talent they have, but they really haven't. I mean, there's been pockets. Occasionally, the bucks have struggled more often than not when they struggle. They miss shots on occasion. The team has made life a little bit tough for them defensively. Indiana comes to mind couple of teams come to mind, and on occasion, they, but there's no patterns here. There's no distinct pattern where you say. You know, that's the bucks kryptonite in that. Usually to me asked him when you're more than forty games into a season. You should be able to identify the strengths of weakness of a given team. But I don't know what consistently teams have been able to take away from the bucks. What is the common thread in their losses? It. I look back on it. It was a variety of things it was off shooting night nine of forty three from three point land. That's probably not going to get it done. It was a weird sort of travel situation where the bucks played in Boston one night. And then played in Miami. The very next night. Okay. That was a little obscure the bucks did not shoot. Well at all that game that that was the game. They were nine to forty three from three. You had to against the sons. I mean that was a letdown game. It was ugly. And then they rebounded and scored like one hundred thirty five and beat the Spurs. So there's no common theme in the bucks losses last year. There was a team not rebounding. Well, enough giving up way too many free pointers. I was kind of consistent. So that is I think it encouraging sign here for the Milwaukee Bucks. And we're they're going. I don't know what the kryptonite is forty some odd games into the season. I don't know what the thing is that can slow the bucks train. They might have an off night here or there. But they haven't lost back to back games yet. And they're beyond the halfway point of the regular season. Did not losing back to back games. This. This could be just thinking. It's amazing games ahead. Is that going to bite them in the butt? I'm curious is it a badge of honor? I mean that kind of thing where you. I mean, it's not like going into the playoffs on a twenty game winning streak. It's a weird. We could not have back to back losses and you go to a playoff series. It's like all right. Well, someone still gotta beat us four out of seven. You're right. So I mean, it could be a story line going into the playoffs for sure. But it speaks to the bucks ability to bounce back, and whatever you wanna call it refocus. And it's it's remarkable. It really is. That is maybe one of the more amazing stance in the NBA. The only team the league that has got to lose back to back games is the bucks. And they've won five in a row. So the opportunity will not happen on Friday. Five game road trip coming up, and that certainly is telling it always is it sort of bleeds into the all star break, mid February a much needed break after a hectic schedule, and then it's crunch time. When you get back from the all star break, the trade deadline's in the past the all star break hits, boom. And then it is a race to the finish. Less than two months race to the finish. They're not standing position, they're an outstanding team efficiency on offense and defense. The only team in the NBA the top ten in both sat they're in the top eight in both really encouraging signs from the Milwaukee Bucks. What stops them? I don't know themselves to say an answer. Now, here's what I'll say, you planted this. They still do give up a ton of three. So they can get beat by a hot shooting team. But again, that's not something that you can consistently get again, go back to the four hundred seven times is team going out shoot you four to seven times when you're also outshooting them as far as opportunities, especially at the rim, which they don't give up. So that's the thing. So early on in the season. I had wondered if there was if there was a team profile this kind of team tends to do well against the bucks and the I lost game against the Boston Celtics. So what do we know about the Celtics? They're well coached. They've got multiple guys on the floor who can knock down long range shots. Al Horford was hot that night. It was game number eight of the regular season. But they were sending records that night where the Boston Celtics took that kind of performance to beat the bucks. Yes, there are well coached team. There's plenty of talent. There's all star talent. There's MVP discussion talent on that team and their center can knock down three pointers. Okay. Is that a recipe is that the formula to beat the bucks have that doesn't hurt? But. I can't say with a high degree of certainty that that's the pattern. That's the recipe to beat the bucks. Now, the bucks to saw team that looks somewhat similar to them. And they got beat up a given night. It's pretty fascinating to be this far into the season. And not really truly pick out. What a team's kryptonite is. That's great. Marcus Johnson bucks legend joined us in the six o'clock hour want to replay chunk of that coming up not the entire interview. If you want that check out the podcast sports central podcast. All you have to do is text the word greg- to four one four seven nine nine one six twenty and the details will come right to your phone. Yes. What a time to be alive. "Longtime, but the bucks you mentioned the owners, and they have done a really great job of trying to reach back into the past. And make sure there's connections, and your bridging that gap between the generation of fans that fell in love with the nineteen eighty and the the generation that don't even know they existed. They've kind of put it all back together. Brought Marcus back into the fold. And now we have that special events come up in March. Yes, certainly a special player who you know, we touched on the position was basketball. And really not just when you watch the game now and think man, this is how Marcus Johnson played. But really the impact he had around others around the league at the time to I mean, you think back to that image of Michael Jordan in his dorm with a Marcus Johnson poster on his wall, a certainly got to carry it a lot and what he did after basketball to notorious for for many here in white men can't jump in. And he did there's certainly a well-deserved honor for Marcus Johnson, March twenty four is when he will become the ninth player to have his jersey race to the rafters in bucks franchise history. If you haven't read the story, yet, certainly go check it out on the Milwaukee journal sentinel for map Alaska's. Governor station with math Alaska's earlier today. They follow him. He made it to three point play. They tried his hand. Again, I need to change the same thing. Eight point just like that. Michael Jordan badgered. Poof, I don't know. What is? "Sixty s we found out over the weekend. Marcus Johnson becoming the ninth player in franchise history to have his number retired by the box that will happen March twenty four th halftime of a game between the bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers Dave in Waukesha, your next WTMJ. Hey, good evening. How're you doing doing good? How are you? I got I got two good memories. And one one memory. On memory takes me down in Naples, Florida when I was stopping on a boat to have lunch and the two older couples. And I said to the one guy my gosh that ring on your finger. What you do when they won the Super Bowl. Turns out it was Larry before he passed one wonderful guy to thought you that. But now, let's let's get onto Marcus Johnson. I was born in in seventy three. So I was too young to remember, you know, stuff like the championship. But. I remember as a kid going to a game. And getting this this poster it was a big, you know, probably a good two foot by four foot poster. So of Marcus Johnson, others, they remember this thing, you know, we do bobbleheads in that now. But this is just a black and white one that you could color, and it was all it was all about Arcus Johns, and, you know, clearly premier player back, then I remember him sitting in my increase, and and those guys as well. But for him to get that poster and put them up on that. Like they did that night. I'm not so sure that jersey should be retired over some of this stuff. But definitely accolades Jagoda some of these players that we get again, just not sure it should be hanging in the rafters or something other than a jersey hanging in the rafters. Maybe a crew that all came together. I don't I don't know. But I just don't I think it's a little over the top. Dave, thanks for the call. I mean when I saw remembers the Marcus Johnson posters. The one thing that I was thinking. Have you seen this one? I think when Michael Jordan was in college. Yeah. And Marcus John poster on his wall. I assume that that's where we're headed. Not the don't retire jersey. Four one four seven nine nine one six twenty mortgage, talk and text line. All right. What what we're going to do here. We still welcome your interaction, but we're going to step away. And when we return we'll bring you a conversation.
