Danny Ainge's Celtics Conundrum

"The logical question though, and he got into this a lot with Bob and we got his thoughts. But obviously I want yours as well. You know, there are only so many options really that Danny Ainge has because of just the economic setup of this month. Stir, you know, it's very top-heavy salary cap wise young guys, you know, you can all right fine. So you don't bring back like an enes Kanter not a young guy but a cheap guy, you know, that's that's not going to give you all that much flexibility back. So it's really do you want to trade Marcus Smart, which I don't think anybody wants to do or do you want to move off of Gordon Hayward in some way shape or form now? He has the power which is often for that 34 + million dollars next year or he could opt out do what everyone thought was going to happen with Al Horford last year, which is re-signed him, you know more years lower aav average wage will value or you know option three is obviously you trade the guy. I don't think there's a scenario in which he just hops out and doesn't return I don't believe that anyway coming off the injury, maybe if he had had a bought a strong healthy season and great playoff run sure, but that wasn't the reality. So it's it's kind of a b and c with Gordon, but you know Brown who has just resigned isn't going anywhere. Tatum's going to get his contract cambuslang. In anywhere, so it's sort of adjusts, you know, your your salary cap position as a results to Hayward or you kind of bring back everybody and you just look to cherry-pick some depth off that balance like you're talking about right or or is there something I'm missing? Yeah. No, I mean and that's the other part of it is in you mentioned Caden pretty extensively Jaylen Brown has also shown he can be foundational second piece that goes he's turning twenty-four I think in like two weeks to have another player like that who and let's face it. The Celtics are pretty fortunate like the wage and they gave him he would Be worth a little more right now. She was going into like restricted free agency. So in addition to those guys being pieces you hope and assume they're both going to get them like camber is what can build which is, you know, an All-Star starters really good. Obviously your concerns about his knee. Hopefully that there's up but with Tatum and Jaylen there's still some there's still a level there. You think if you're if you're a self extension you hope so maybe that's what it takes to kind of get over the hump and you talk about Hayward. Obviously, I know fans are kind of disenchanted with them. He's had some just brutal block really like it's not like these injuries you suffering because he's like frail or like, you know, like just just brutal brutal luck. But off this year when he was healthy like last year when he was healthy. He was still not himself. It was clear this year when he was healthy looked really good. He was one of the best players and I think it was encouraging birth. You there aren't a lot of Gordon hayward's out there. We talked about like moving off of Gordon Hayward like he's back and playing like he's capable. That's a pretty big asset to have particularly. If you're putting them alongside our guys like Jason jail and who were still on their uptrend?

"And coming to you on a night where, by the way Gordon Hayward, who's been missing for the Celtics for over a month. Now, Gordon hey, were did return tonight in a big moment for the Celtics. If you didn't know what was going on the Boston Heat, Siri's Here's What happened is basically Boston had plenty of opportunities to win games in this series that didn't they went overtime in one game that a 20 point lead, another game that evaporated. And so they were down. Oh, to Marcus Smart in the locker room after the Celtics went down to nothing in the series. Blows up stuff is thrown all sorts of yelling and screaming. He leaves the locker room and a half they have a team meeting on DH and you look and you go. Okay, This is getting pretty messy. You know, Heater. Ah, very well. Run team well coached Team, aggressive team deep team. You look the heat you go. This could get really dangerous really fast. Boston got some reinforcements and her Gordon Hayward. Gordon Hayward returned to Boston tonight played 31 minutes. Didn't score lie only had six points. But it gives you rebounds gives you since he gives a couple steals like it was. It was a good night for Gordon. A. We're just getting back again hasn't played basketball in about a month, and the Celtics did win that game. 1 17 106. So now that's serious is 2 to 1.

Boston - Report Details ‘Heated Confrontation’ Between Marcus Smart And Jaylen Brown, Who ‘Needed To Be Separated’

"Air down to Oh, they have a huge game three tonight against the Heat. Their season rests on it because, of course, no MBA team has ever come back from a 30 Siri's deficit. And it's time to see you. The Celtics are. Of course you read the reports. The athletic had the story on Friday. Postgame blowup falling game to Marcus Smart, Jalen Brown having a heated confrontation inside of the locker room they needed to be separated by their teammates. They then talked it out with Jason Tatum and Kemba Walker and Bride Stevens's room around one in the morning agent which Morales give ESPN had that is well yesterday. So this is a turning point for the Celtics and Are they going to fall apart or just going to be a rallying cry for them? Because there is one thing that's for certain the Celtics are a team right now. That can't close their close, but they can't cause it struggled to close against the Toronto Raptors. And they've struggled mightily to close against the Miami heat in games one and two of the Eastern Conference finals. And that is the reason why they're currently down, and that extends To the sidelines next since the coach Brad Stevens. You talk about Mike Budenholzer and some mistakes he made with the Bucks. Brad Stevens, also struggling to close and adjust to Erik Spoelstra and the Heat. So is this a Celtic seemed, is falling apart. Or is this a turning points? "Fun around, obviously so we could have one liners and we did. Plays with passion is full of fire, and that's what I love about it most. To be honest, he has a bizarre now will we need him? To continue to have that. See to me This is why this is a positive and that's why I still think the Celtics have a chance to win a couple of games here, and I don't think this is for five by. I think they win a game or two and maybe I'm wrong. But You know the two men involved in the confrontation or too high character men yelling Brown and Marcus Smart. And I think both they're going to go back to the little bubble suite there bubble room decompress, which they've already done because they met with with Coach Stephens. I believe they will channel that Marcus Smart is a ferocious pitbull. And so is Jalen Brown. And I think that they're going to use the negative. I know this sounds cliche, but you can't There are certain guys that you know. Well, either turn it down, or they'll be put off by a teammate called him out, and that's it. And then the seams are afraid and the season's over. I don't think now the Celtics will probably lose the serious cause. Miami's probably better. But I think that this actually has spun into a positive, but I think Jalen Brown and Marcus mortifying not worried about that at all. I'm not either Marcus Smart is an emotional Blair. Some of the things he said were, I don't know a little bit troubling, smart or no, No, Marcus smart. He basically was saying, when everything is going bad, it's always on me. Type of thing, and I didn't know what he was talking about, Necessarily. You know what I mean so, but it may be just in the moment in the emotion of the moment and losing a game. You know, after half they thought they had in hand on DH. I don't know it was just his. His choice of words were interesting, at least according to the reports. You know what? Let's just finish off the rest of the sound here a little something from Jason Tatum on the frustration that boiled into the Celtics locker room. Here's Tatum has changed. Course.

After last night's game two loss, they had to be separated by teammates smart. Why regarded as Boston's emotional leader was heard shouting inside the Post Game Locker Room. Sources told the athletic that smart stormed into the Celtics Post game, locker room saying that other players needed to be held accountable and not simply point the finger towards them when toward him when things are going wrong smart continued and his voice grew louder sources said Brown snapback and shouted that Celtics players must stay together and that their actions must come as a team not individually and that smart needed a cool out those sources added smart had verbal exchanges with a couple. Boston Celtics Blew It In Game 1

"The Western Conference finals is on Friday night game one of the Eastern Conference Final Scowl was on Tuesday night and that was a fantastic game in the eastern conference. It was a back and forth affair it looked like Boston. Had IT. Scale, the Celtics controlled most of the game up behind a thirty five, twenty, three fourth quarter including a big Jimmy Butler corner three it was a tight game heading overtime and then in in overtime scale is a fantastic finish with Boston's young star Jason Tatum having the ball driving the WHO for a game tying dunk that was blocked at the rim by tremendous defensive play by Bam at a bile. Just think of this. That that play by Bam I don't I don't know like the Lebron block comes to mind. But from a playoff standpoint man that was a big time block I think I think that blocked will be seeing for a long time to come over and over and over again on the highlight package, but you know by. The Celtics to me really blew this game. They came out with the right mindset of playing basketball the right way with force and purpose and moving the basketball, and then they just thought was too easy and they let Miami back in Miami, you know built up a six point lead in the Celtics again in the third quarter a stark afford quarter build another lead up to fourteen points in this lead now and Miami. Just completely chipped away very to me a very, very disappointing style of play from the Celtics I don't if you. WanNa, beat the Miami Heat and it's not like you shouldn't do. You should know this going in you got to move the basketball and the Celtics a trot around talking about we gotta move the ball. We got to share it when we moved the ball run stoppable and then they proceed when they get a fourteen point lead moving the ball, they go on and play isolation for the last ten minutes of the fourth quarter. I thought I thought a not a I don't want to call an embarrassing performance but I really thought it was. On characteristic for them to play that style against the heat team which you know going in, you cannot play isolation basketball against the heat you have to put those guys on the move. Yeah, you do you have to share the ball you have to move it. Boston. Look good throughout much of the game scall- especially in the second half on the third quarter looks like they took control and into the fourth quarter. What Miami made the big plays down the stretch a mentioned Jimmy Butler corner three in Bam's big block at the rim on the Celtics side sidescale some of their young wings in particular played very well Marcus smart was terrific. Yet twenty six points. He made six of thirteen threes. A Jason Tatum Jalen, Brown were. Solid almost got. One of the things that I think has a lot of people including this guy himself scratching their head that is Celtics Point Guard Kemba. Walker you really struggled scale on Tuesday night. He was just six for nineteen from the floor one for nine from three, and after the Game Kemba Walker said, I'm just playing terrible to be honest I just have to be

Thrilling Raptors and Celtics series heading to a game 7

"I want to switch gears. Now to the Toronto Raptors game versus the Boston Celtics obviously, it was gained six I really thought the Celtics were closed. One out. There are a lot of questionable calls this game specifically at the end of regulation there was a no call on a Kemba Walker left and I was clearly a foul, the Raptors one, one, twenty, five, the one, twenty, two in. A double overtime game to push this series to seven games. The best player was Kyle lowry man played fifty three minutes got thirty point three, hundred, thirty, three points, eight rebounds six assists absolutely incredible employed twenty-one Norman Powell had twenty three. He had a big and one after a steal one of the big places the game on the Boston Celtics side Marcus Smart. Twenty three he's been electric lately. Jaylen. Brown continues to improve after that bad game two games ago. He's at back to back bounce back game thirty, one points, sixteen rebounds and two assists Tatum at twenty, nine and fourteen and nine almost twenty nine point triple double ties with eighteen and seven Kemba. Walker was really the only no show for the Boston Celtics, tonight. At Five, points seven assists to eleven from the field and fifty one minutes. Only five points that's abysmal for Kemba. Walker. Especially going into team that I don't really necessarily think somebody that can guard him a guy like, Caldera. Maybe for advance leak got the assignment a couple of times and a couple possessions I understand that but I don't know. Big Win for the Toronto Raptors I really do believe this game simplicitas if I told you from the beginning of the series of toss up obviously the Celtics went up to all Toronto responded to go to tie it to to Boston got a big game five victory I thought that would really seal the series I thought the Celtics would win tonight the close up at the rafters just won't quit man they won't die one of the scrappy EST teams in the NBA. One. Of the best defensive teams than the to hold a team to what only one hundred and what twenty two points in double overtime keep in mind in double overtime. That's impressive. That's playing. Basketball essentially more that's playing what? No about five quarts of basketball the hold somebody to one hundred, twenty, two points is impressive stuff. Can they get it done and gained seven? I'm not sure I'm still going to have to take the Celtics I. Think the Celtics probably should have won this game I thought for a majority of the game. They were the better team and again that no call and Kemba Walker at the end of regulation was a brutal. No call I thought two free throws, and then obviously maybe Toronto a game winner I game tire and not sure. Again Kemba Walker should have gone two free throws at the end of the game. My opinion was a close one but all is fair in love and war the referees for pretty much every game are always going to be considered bad right. Every single playoff game fans are going to have a disagreement with it but specifically, that can no call that was poor that was a bad call.

"How do they put out the Raptors? Right? I don't see them coming back from a three nothing. Seriously if the Celtics are able to combat on Thursday, what do they need to do kind of put their foot on their throats here? I'd say continue to take advantage of the weak spots that given them on the defense game one. They take the corners 10415 three-point shooting game to they take advantage of space. They're giving Marcus Smart on the perimeter and he definitely had a little more space especially in rotation when Grant Williams is drawing a guy in the corner rather than him on the wing. They just took advantage of everything they could find in this game Kemba Walker struggle and smart goes off to follow that up Tatum picks. All the spots is aggressive gets in the way. And when everyone else is struggling they take advantage to Rome doesn't take advantage of everything we're going to do a whole video about them complaining about cause I didn't I thought they got the better whistle in this one. They overturned the out-of-bounds play on smart. They overturned the file and transition on smart. She got a good whistle in this one. They had a good lead going into the fourth quarter a strong game through three quarters, and they just blew it. They didn't take advantage. No, I mean, yeah that that's why I won't give them credit because I think that the Raptors gave it everything they had in the Celtics played like below average basketball. So like that's what I said, even if the Celtics had lost game too and they tried to the Celtics tried to lose this game at the very end there under two minutes left turn over as follows the tech on Jayson Tatum Celtics lose this game is still saying listen. Yeah, they lost but the Celtics played like crap and had a chance to win this game. There's clearly in my opinion the better team now, I've seen two games Celtics Raptors in the playoffs in both times. I've said this other show that clearly the better team they have more talent in the starting lineup doesn't matter to me, you know, how much size or how much depth the Raptors might have they're not showing it sir ji Bach has been their best player through two games and that's a guy that if he's your best player, you're not winning a series no offense of Serge, Ibaka, you just not at that point in his career anymore. He's been the biggest thorn in the Celtics side because none of their other players Lowry hasn't looked like himself man. Fleet hasn't looked like himself off. Has to look like none of these guys are the guys that got them to the number two seed in the East. So to me it's done. This is my series-clinching helmet or hard hats on it's over. Oh man Jimmy. See that's the thing those three guys. You just mentioned from the Raptors. That's not gonna continue to happen. I don't think all three of those I'm sort of combination is going to continue come up short. One of those guys going to go off. My big is Tiago 26 27, maybe three, maybe the three of those guys in Combined for at least sixty five points something to that stretch and I think that's going to go a long way obviously cuz I'm also Jayson Tatum don't let what happened discourage you..

Orlando Magic's Jonathan Isaac explains why he didn't take knee or wear Black Lives Matter shirt Friday

"We had an incredible opening weekend of games name a star level player that player delivered at least once if not twice over the first three or four nights of the NBA's restart here in Orlando, we had crazy comeback wins. By the Houston Rockets, we had a dominant performance by. Jaanus over some little pesky pip squeak team from New England I forget who they might be. We got Marcus smart got fined for trying to work the officials. We've got storylines upon story lines. The clippers bounce back from their loss to the Lakers. Looking excellent and just throttling the New Orleans Pelicans. There's so many different directions that we can go Michael that I decided. Here's what we're GONNA do opening weekend heaters we're GONNA have just open ended questions are we're going to ping pong back and forth you give me your answers I'm going to give you my answers to these questions and try to cover as much ground as possible before we get there though I do want to double back quickly on the national anthem demonstrations that we touched on last episode, we got so many thoughtful emails from various members of the open floor globe on this subject, but I think there was a major development after we spoke on Friday. and. That involve Jonathan Isaac Meyers. Leonard Gregg Popovich Becky Hammon and one of the NBA referees all deciding to not kneel to not really participate in what had been in unified demonstration on Thursday. All of those people who chose to stand were obviously doing it on principle and they were doing it knowing there was going to be a lot of attention their direction. Now, if you look at Popovich amend the referee essentially, they were trying to just say, Hey, I support the the Social Justice Movement it's it's a private or personal decision for the referee said look I it's important to me to stand Meyers Leonard made a similar comment. Essentially. Saying that his brothers military service in the in the military service of close people in his life led him to WanNa stand to salute the flag. But within Isaac was a slightly different case and he actually used this entire demonstration opportunity to almost have a one man demonstration of his own. In his belief, the idea of the black lives matters movement quote unquote doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. He also said that you know we shouldn't be necessarily judging things solely based on skin color that we should be trying to live a life basically you know in God's mold and try to live up to his standard, and that Jesus Christ was his personal savior and and that he wanted everyone to focus on that. Aspect of of living rather than the particular issue that was being brought forward with the black lives matter movement by the players he didn't really get any major pushback. Within the NBA Community people respected his right to make a stand. He actually not only did he stand during the national anthem? He didn't wear a black lives matter t shirt which many people notice because he was essentially the only player not to do that his whole personal story Michael took a crazy twist over the weekend and sad twist when he wound up tearing his ACL injury that's going to end his time here in Orlando obviously but also could cost him all of next season. So now talk about a whirlwind seventy, two hours for player who generated millions of us with his comments about the protests. I'm curious. Let's start with Jonathan Isaac. What did you make of his decision? After we've seen things settle in the last couple of days You know maybe it doesn't seem quite as Eye Opening as it did at that moment, but I'll admit I was I was surprised to see given the buy in from everybody on opening night. Right, I mean I just WanNa Start and say that it it really really is a bummer to see anyone get injured but particularly is ICK who was already on restriction he was already playing with a humongous brace on his leg from a previous injury that cost him a majority of this regular season before it was suspended. So I just I feel for him greatly. I I think generally speaking. The coverage of who stands in who sits I mean we talked about this heading in anticipated it I. Think I think the coverage is generally besides the point and it doesn't really get the point I feel like people are using. This as an opportunity to shame those who are standing in a little bit I mean Meyers Leonard. said, he couldn't sleep before he made the decision to stand and that's just like not. The whole focus or the point here right like. You can obviously Support Black lives and also stand for the national anthem. It is a symbolic gesture that is what it is in the case of Isaac. I really had a difficult time understanding even what his message was until you interpreted it the way that you did I mean I watched the clip of Him Multiple Times survey there I'm GonNa just GonNa read what he said I and then we can use that as a jumping off point because I don't WanNa torture what he said earlier and I might have done that. So sorry for that. He says quote absolutely I believe that black lives matter kneeling while wearing a black lives matter t shirt doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. I. Don't think kneeling or putting on a T. shirt for me personally is the answer i. Feel like for me, black lives are supported through the Gospel. All lives are supported through the Gospel. We all have things that we do wrong. Sometimes, it gets into a place of pointing fingers. We all fall short of God's glory whoever will humble themselves and seek God and repent of their sins. We can see our mistakes and people's mistakes and evil in a different light. Racism isn't the only thing that flags our society, our nation and our world, and he basically said he wanted this conversation to get out of the realm of skin color because the answer to all of our problems in everything that goes on in our world is Jesus. So. when I watched the clip. I'll I'll be honest. I was a little confused where he was going to after typing it all out trying to marinate on what he was saying I think he essentially wanted to have a demonstration on behalf of his religious beliefs and that this was an opportunity for him to say look you know focusing only on one particular group I. Guess in his view, the black lives matter group and you know everybody wearing a t-shirt doesn't necessarily achieve the wider goal which would be presumably healthy living. You know honest living you know Living which to him as a higher priority I think that's where he was going with his statements.

I think Well, in that respect about that is the first floor peaches May he plays hard. He was the best player. I think he's a bad person that day. That's his opinion. He was moving in last place, but either way it away if he was charging he was not sore. I'm having going to win and away from this place, it was changed. "And Bucks. Two more bucks minus five and a key laws for Milwaukee. Uh, not out for a long time, but Eric Bledsoe is downgraded He will be out tomorrow. Morven Williams doubtful is will impact content and is also out for the Milwaukee Bucks for Beantown. We see who Boston's missing Kemba Walker's probable as his Marcus Smart, so they're not missing anybody tomorrow. That's why Boston looks a little bit inviting their plus the five points almost looks a little bit too inviting. So I want to see what happens. I certainly would only consider Boston in this game. We'll see what happens. Maybe we'll see the line. Come down on tomorrow as we have a 3 30 Pacific. Uh, scheduled tip off, so Hey, I Sometimes it looks too easy when you see a number like this because you get to Milwaukee. Yeah, they want to get the number one seed for the reason I mentioned earlier. They're probably well, maybe watches and not so much as in the Western Conference, where, uh, the top seed will. It's a team that very well be fatigued. It could very well be Washington I mentioned in the East is in the night. See there the on ly team that could possibly Eliminated by Brooklyn, Orlando, But they may also finished more than four games behind the eighth seed in that that's the case. Then there is no playoff, so Milwaukee might not get to play attire team. But certainly Milwaukee will be a team that I'm expecting to use this as a warm up period. I expect the honest won't play. Extended minutes in this game. Boston, of course, already in the playoffs, But I think here, why not expect a close game?

"And it's our Pleasure to welcome in a two time Emmy Award winning bucks. TV analysts a five time eh, NBA All Star. Did also play at Bella and won a national championship. That's Marcus Johnson here with us on the Zach Yelp show. Marcus appreciate the time How you doing? I'm doing bills. Everything is no good. All can play good benefits in basketball family from your lips to God's ears. Can't wait to see what's gonna happen in the N B. A bubble. I saw video back in February, You were wearing a Kobe Bryant jersey and you actually threw it down in your road. I'm still dunking at 64 years old. Have you been dunking at all during the pandemic? Or was that a one time thing at 64 district Cream donuts, Bad eye. You must have been nervous, right? Well, every year on my birthday, I do a dung just to see if I could still do it. I didn't plan on doing it this year. Just chill out at my son's a SIA. All over social media. They have got to do it contingent to the one in Sydney one in with that inside, And so, of course, I did a couple of warm up to feel pretty good and And we decided absent phone brought up two tackles. Omar, you know, taco fallen. Whoever jumped over him, Aaron Gordon. Whoever dumped over way last year Next year I'll be 65. That's the official retirement age. I've been retired. I'm Travis. You have to do one more 65 years old. I gotta pay the bed after that. I don't blame you. I don't. I can't even dunk right now. I can't imagine being able to dunk when you're in your sixties. Marcus Johnson here with us on the show. When we look at this MBA restart. We know that the Bucks are the best team in the league. From a record standpoint right now they're going to be the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. The's eight games inside of the bubble. What do you look for out of them where they could really ease themselves back into playing shape? The annex a great question. I was just kind of pondering that looking at the books. Play that scrimmage against neworleans the other night and You know, I just don't think that teams should put too much into the eight. Feeding games. It's a gradual buildup. You want to be planned your best basketball. Obviously when, when the playoffs start. This is such a weird. Praise the different type of experiment. Probably guys. And so, um, you know, see positives from the brother. I've seen not good things about in terms of Kind of fighting since, um, some difficulties against the product in here tonight, but, you know the season games Because boom Jose lost compete. He's gonna want these guys to come out and and just so effort show competitive competitiveness from Paris. But I'm not sure about the ones. The won and lost record is important. At this stage of the game. It's all about kind of a slow, gradual buildup. I've been exploding wants to play all secure here. When you look at the team from last year to this year. What do you see is the biggest difference as they even got better from what they were last year, which was impressive. Well, I mean, ways that it rest values that they're so what he has done that He's given Chris Middleton a breather at defense. Can't Chris I was just looking up Christian defensive record 107th overall, 22nd ranked small forward LeBron and collide As I said at the top. But Chris doesn't have to get all that energy trying to beat this Great three and the win. Clare and I could focus on his office and I was a result becomes one of seven or eight guys who was Trying to suit you both 20% from the three point line, stick to the set plus from the field and monitor it from the people that I think a 20 point today. Yes, I think that's direct benefit to Chris Middleton. Eric Bledsoe also, let's not forget him, Master. He struggle big time last couple of years in the playoffs and honestly, stuff a big farm of the playoffs. Uh, this year, he seemed to be a lot more comfortable in his basketball scared now. It is kind of getting a late start based on tested positive and them in quarantine and all that stuff. How quickly he could kind of get back into a rhythm and flow going to be a big difference. But today I think this team has gotten even better, but local tradition of Robin Has really been a great great move. But John forced our president breaking Robin Lopez, and now we've got two bent beak gets standings and leave so I think the defense has been even better than the great detective team from last season. Marcus Johnson here with us it Zaki help show on CBS Sports radio doing a little bubble breakdown on the Milwaukee butts nationally. The big question about Chris Middleton is. Can the Bucks win it all with him? Be in the Bucks. Second best player. He's a two time All Star. Give me the local feel on that. Our people still concerned locally about Middleton be in that number to peace and winning the championship this year. Right here is where you go. I could go to a barber shop in the hold of the brothers give Ah, little about depended on Chris have the huge games but In terms of inside basketball people, people that have watched Chris closely like myself. I really believe that Chris, it's all about his confident being an all Star to the second consecutive D up really? Helps his belief in himself as being one of the elite players in the league and kept in one of the shooters in the league. And you couple that with the fact that he comes back, he's getting guns for arms and get this definition I've never seen before. His body status. Probably way dog looks really good, really in great shape of the Kalpoe talked about his explosion and bounciness coming back after the four months off was really, really surprised. So he's really putting the work that during this time off to come back and make himself I've been so on. But with president mentally I think that way you get tomato last year, the average with just 14 points in the field, and he left. How Laurie, pending for a big cheque of those minutes in that six game lost to the crap. You have to be enough to love. So you've got a lot to prove, but I think Based on what I'm looking at changes of his body where he is physically brave is right. But I think he's ready to make that statement. When I look at the Eastern Conference, I really do fully expect Milwaukee. To get to the finals. They were in that one seed spot last year did not get there When you look at the Eastern Conference this year, who's the biggest challenger for the Bucks when the season resumes tomorrow night? It's really interesting. You get him some. I think three really legitimate. Even the Miami that mix also, you can't count out exposure and then the butler as your lead gap, but I think there's still a little bit godly hero of none. And guys like that. And then he began by making just a little bit young and that, Betty, but I really believe that Celtics man. I mean, people talk about the Raptors, who I respect about. Nick Norris is a great coach. Brad Stevens was great, but one through four in terms of scoring and issues and problems. You know Jason Taylor planted Kemba Walker is the number one option. That's two through four group these guys to produce and I think about taking on like the game, and that's the most since that Golden State a couple of years ago, but most just like second most 1995 in terms of looking for and then when Gordon Hayward is your fourth option, going going home. What is your fourth option? And then we talk about a container my greatest been, but then this Dylan Brown watching his footwork. Watching the lip bruised stands the finishes in traffic. He's a guy that could be a real problem for team like the book had been. The wild card would be market smart. Distant Jabba, even though Marcus Smart Sixthree export out of 16 11 Marcus Smart office of players and we know how much she just underneath their skin. And so he's a guy that has given me honest as much trouble as anybody scoring effectively and officially against it, So I said that and then the two big catch I mean the pick and roll for five hours straight that Boston life's run. Those two guys found business cancer, pounded it inside a greatjob getting into the paint and score of them that I'm not gonna puke my shot and roll that movies have private medical himself. I really believe that Celtics to me that they're not deed. I think both those four score that they have been a lot of pressure on the Milwaukee ways that do the Middleton. To defend at a high level every night in order to be a minute in a series.

"A career season. So far Marcus. Smart Boston Celtics. I doing good. I'm glad to be here. Thanks for having. We are recording this on a Tuesday afternoon. You Sprain Your Ankle about twenty four hours ago. You're fine you're doing okay right. Oh yeah it was a little scared but I'm alright as part wanted a game in You know we've got a great training staff here so they're doing everything they can to make sure I'm ready. Your defensive versatility has reached a point where you have now referred for to yourself as a stretch six which really. I didn't see that coming. Stretch everything or I six is what what really makes it. Well how did you come up with us. It's funny it was just a joke you know started with. Last year's team Allan Baynes was just joking around. You know I Gardner's guys in our case we regard big and I started making a joke homestretch six. Forget a stretch stretch sixteen. That's what it is. And they loved it and it just Kinda stuck with they tell l.. Me So one of the coaches told me today. You know you guys are very good at the thing. Where if you switch on defense and there's a little guy guarding big I in the post? YOU'LL S- cram them out there. Like Marcus is trying to scramble. Out like centers scrammed scrammed scale true scheme. I'm definitely breaking the scheme. And and you know that that comes with a lot of years of you know. Prepare yourself and working in our ninette and my teammates. My coaches staff. They trust me enough to be able to do that. But it is a sight to see when you see a six three six four guard coming over and tell them a six six six seven guy get out the paint. Jason Get out jailing Kusak we got this is weird but you know it's something else on the team and there's something I'm really good and take products. Is there ever. You are a tenacious defender. You've had how can I put some Frisky risk physical moments with a lot of players in the NBA. Has I remember asked of all people Shaquille Harrison this last year. He gave me a great answer. Have you have you ever had a player come up to during during a game and be like dude can you just can you chill. It's Wednesday on a back to back. You don't have to press me. Ninety four feek usually give it a little bit of rest plenty of towns. I've had quite a few joking lab. They like garden tonight on my yet light year here we go. Just just relax off night like just let me live and you know so I it speaks volumes as a complement to me in the work that I've put in on that in where you know guys you know acknowledging and see that I am such. You're good definitive to the point where they don't want me to guard anymore. You must know it's over when someone asks you that you must not like this guy's about to have a bad night. Oh yeah I that's part again. You know I I could tell you right in the near that. I'm going to win this match up just for the simple fact that you just basically told me you're scared of me right now and and that's what I got from that and and I'm GONNA use it to my advantage so you guys are recording this you guys are. I believe eleven to you either. I think you have the number two offense in the NBA. Which I did not expect I? I expect to be decent but number two the NBA. I think behind the wizards which I really did not expect break so I was looking at some numbers just surface level numbers. Because you know. Know what everyone's GonNa want to blame everything on this year. Right Kyrie's gone canvas here chemistry's better Yada Yada Yada time of possession Kyri Kemba about the same total. Oh passes for the team. About the same assist rate like percentage of baskets that come with assists about the same but the results are better and like I'm watching games like something does look something. Is Clicking clicking last year. So you're on the team like what what's different There's is just fun for you know I think it was hard for everybody last year. You know including myself you know I was dealing with my mom's passing you know and everybody had their you're on little individual things that they were dealing with that. When he came to the team it was like I will? I got more things very stressed about that. I need to be focused right now individually that the team Kinda got put it in the show it affected us now. You know everybody's just mine is free. Everybody's confident everybody believes more in a sales and we're just having fun again. You know whatever anybody individually was working on instead of holding. We're now even talking to each each other about it. We couldn't do that last year. Really Yeah just for a simple fact. You didn't know would anybody who's going through us. Afraid to talk You didn't know how to talk to anybody eighty grownup as young man. You're always talked. You know you don't WanNa show you emotions you don't WanNa cry. And is this stigma on it that you know as a man supposed to be mainly Krahn is not mainly talking about defenders. Not mainly when you know. That's not true that hurts hurts long. Run you know in mental health is a big issue in a lot of sports in that. That was going on. You know everybody was afraid to talk to one another. Because we didn't know how to we didn't know this person we were gonNA stay or if they were willing to understand I and instead of putting ourselves out there we decided coded what changed other than I think. You had a very good relationship with Kyrie. You've talked about that so obviously you're not gonna pin it on him so like why. Why is everyone comfortable having those conversations now and they weren't last year I think last year just opened our eyes to you know the the outcome of holding all all that pent up aggression or whatever. You're going to incite that. It doesn't work for us. I it's only going to bring us down in. Everyone hated feeling down. You know and I'm I'm I'm cool curry Still Cool car. You know everybody on his team you know as a as a friend as a career. Great Person Curry had issues. We know every just like every last one of his career had to go through some things that he's never been alone and he had to deal with. Did you know he didn't know how to deal with this first time being having his own team. Not Being Wilbur on now having somebody who's been bombarded with that things and know what what to say what to do and how to do it. He had to deal with that on his own. Just like everybody else in. That affected him as well. When did you know he was leaving? When did you not like when did you learn like when did you know in your heart? This isn't going to look the same next season Probably after after the first game against it's Milwaukee in the playoffs that second game every I lost I lost the very first loss kind of how to fill in that some things. We're going to be changed. I didn't I know exactly what those things were. who were going to beware? But I knew some things weren't going to change We're going to change and wasn't going to be the same in a lot of people look at that as all. That's that's a bad thing. Change is not necessarily always bad. You know So I didn't look at it as a bad thing. I just looked at it for a opportunity for us as a team as organization as individuals to find out truly what we need to do to feel happy. There were rumblings in the media all of last year that we're curious to me that part of all of the issues dog team last year and by the way. I've never been more wrong about a team that I was about you guys last year. I thought you guys I was going to be sixty one team. I picked you to make the finals. I just thought based on what you've done here before without Gordon in Cairo Lake I was dead dead wrong. But they're capping these rumblings of off part of what's going on is that Brad is forced feeding Gordon touches. And Gordon's not ready. 'cause he's coming off injury and that's creating resentment among the guys who were there air for that playoff run. They're like these are what's happening. This guy's not playing as well as was any of that real or was it ever spoken about or was that are where people just connecting dots. I think a little bit of both. It wasn't so much we were mad or they were mad or anybody who is mad that he was force-feeding Gordon. It was. We wanted Gordon Gordon. Do so damn whale day. It hurt us to see him struggling the way he did in. When you go to war with guys and you see a guy go to through something like that an injury on his side and you see him forcing his way back in trying to play knowing he's not one hundred healthy? You gotta tip your head off you got to and unfortunately for us a hurt because like you say Gordon wasn't one hundred percent but we wanted him to do so bad a clue uh-huh uh-huh not just Brad were Gordon. Let's go like come on. We were forcing them to do so many things that he he probably wasn't quite as confident as he is now to do. And and you know that's all out of love. It was nothing else. There was no malice. No spy on. Is We really want to see him. Do great coming back from that injury and we put a lot of pressure on the he probably wasn't and ready for. Can you believe he broke his. And the other like we. We get a half ago and San Antonio know when when he when he actually got hurt seen his face in immediately. Yeah I was like something's wrong really right to dinner. He didn't even talk to me. Tommy Hardy popping everything say Dang I say it's just it's just bad he cannot get a break you know. He went through the catastrophic injury would his ankle and he's plant best basketball his career. He's getting back into the group and then a hand injury comes in. It's just like I've been there. I understand I haven't been the type of injury Daddy's head but I've Torma bleat. I've dislocated my fingers. Shattered my hands so I a couple couple of times all sides I I could just tell no no no no it wasn't in la though was it was in la but it was in his hotel. So I felt form and we all feel form you know. We were finally seeing the Gordon. There we knew he could be he just bad time again for him in you know but but at least this time it's it's nothing s series as the ankle and he goes. He's going to be begging and is his non shooting in so that's another great thing you know minds was worse was mass shooting games so that was a little bit more tough than me with the thumb and everything but his confidence is high. And like I said we're just waiting for his arrival comeback. It was a picture frame right right. A picture frame is someone told me. I don't exactly know the mechanics told me if that glass or whatever goes in and it's an eighth of of an inch the other way you're talking about like whole really tendon like a really catastrophic injury. Oh yeah like a year a year away to beyond what the doctor doctor told me as they're taking out this glass. I actually still have the glass somewhere saved. Do you really yeah to remind me agent. Every day how blessed I am to still be playing doctor actually told me like you said eighth of an inch away. I probably might not be playing basketball game for my life. The rest of your life today said it it would tore everything in my hand. Holy smoke it was. It was a pretty thick in amount of glass. They came out and I couldn't believe it once I'm looking at them open in my hand and taken out glass and I actually still have pieces of glass stuck in my hand. Now that they say will probably be more of a threat of them trying to going getting than just sledding. Be In my glass everywhere. Be careful exactly. What actually makes a better toothbrush? "Yeah. It's time to get up win the Celtics twenty it looked like things couldn't get worse. They got much better in the unlikeliest place in the league. Those highlights are one minute away. Plus there was a shot in the air. That would have beaten Duke last night. You will see it and you'll hear from coach K on zion's return in six minutes. And Todd mcshay is live with us with his latest mock draft a quarterback at number one affect you can guess who it is. We're getting into it as we get out with us starting right now on this Wednesday morning. We are ready to roll the morning from our studios in New York City with Jalen ingredient Maria, Seth Greenberg and the sweat goo made. Hit it. This whole Jay le- smell. So good. Scratchy TV, Jalen meals, lying money like last smelling jail. Two. Expected to happen last night. Jalen is what happened for Cairo Irving, and the Celtics taking on step and the warriors you figure this is the worst thing that could happen in Boston as badly as they're playing. But look at Cairo getting going the first session of the game. You could tell the Celtics on talent teen either play or down to the competition. And here we go with more from them Al Horford setting screen, Jason Tatum to the whole Celtic start the game on an eleven nothing run. And in the second elitist fifteen and how Jaylen Brown look at cutting. He doesn't terrific dob of not standing cutting. He's from the bay air. We went to college in the bay area. So he can through the after to be back after this past Marcus smart, Gordon Hayward, Marcus smart is the past on the Boston Celtics team a lot of people don't realize that. Because there's a lockdown defender warriors were down twenty five points of the half their largest home halftime deficit in the Steve Kerr third quarter. The lead of twenty three days in Tatum this open because. Because is and. Whoever he's talking to. Okay. That seems like a good reason later in the quarter something some twenty one oh Jason Tatum planes defense on Kevin Durant. And that's the league. We wanted to see Tatum take not only offensively compete on a decent size will. And so this would be night that would belong to the Celtics belong in Mark's Gordon Hayward as he goes coast to coast Hayward who has been struggling so much this season. He had a terrific tight last night. Then they're going to close it out with corner threes that's kyri on one side and the lead is twenty six and the very next possession. It's Hayward on the other three ball corner pocket Hayward with scores thirty the Celtics are up Twenty-nine. And then the Gration for the warriors would take over this sequence here with the Marcus cousin and Aaron Payne and this season. I'll be learning. Experience DeMarcus cousins score more points to anyone in the eight. A hasn't played in the playoffs east possession..

"Marcus smart right there in the post game press conference we've got all offseason whenever that gets here to talk about marcus smart and the future that he may or may not have here in boston but once again marcus smart just showing all of the intangibles doing everything that needed to be done for the boston celtics today in a game where the celtics needed each and everything that marcus smart gave them because they got major offensive contributions from a series of guys but they didn't have that one guy that was really rolling that they could count on in that fourth quarter when cleveland got it down to six you know they would still struggle on the offensive end but it was the celtics with a ninety two advantage on the offensive boards in the second half that really helped close the deal in this game and marcus smart played a huge role in all of that happening really helping set the tone and the tenor in the second half for the celtics to be able to put themselves in a position to come back from that first half eleven point deficit which is very hard to do against a team like the cavaliers lead by lebron james who was fully engaged tonight and now this series finds itself flipping to cleveland and what did the celtics do i you know i think that for the celtics team to be able to steal one in cleveland all they have to do is continue doing what they've done you go back to that pacers series we can continue to compare the celtics to the pacers the pacers were able to go into cleveland and blow out the cavaliers in one game they won by thirty something points so it can be done in cleveland but cleveland is going to be desperate they know that.

"Their chances of winning a championship next year if they get bounce in the second round this year fell now i'm not and a big part of the reason for that is you don't have gordon hayward now the injury situation with the rest of the team with the rest of the celtics that are on the roster being what it is these erred it this is not a team at odds as he completes a lost season or you just writing it off to an extent you are you know to what extent this is a lost season into large extent was a lost season the second gordon hayward went down five minutes into the first game the sixteen game winning streak after that kind of had you're buying into the idea of this team could exceed expectations even without hayward but i think we've seen the celtics come back down to earth somewhat and the injuries now playing a big role significant role here down the stretch so they're going to be thin in the frontcourt could could be thin in the backcourt especially in the short term here and if marcus smart's injury lingers into the post season then it's got to be something that i think is going to be tough to overcome when you're going up against some of the better team even the east if you've got a plea indiana without marcus smart that becomes tougher match up because that's a team they can go small quick it beach you on the defensive end without smart in there if you had played cleveland obviously even with marcus smart that's child you know the best player a ends a lotta people at the kind of sleeping on which ronald been doing this year but another formal opponent in the post season so i'm not expecting a lot from the celtics at this point and the rest of the regular season a just want us to the fast four through to get to the playoffs because this team is is beat the hell at this point and it there's really nothing left to play four here proved he kinda know where you're going to be but i'm not terribly worried about where they finish in the play offs or whether they get to the.

"To be that way as frustrating is that can be i think you saw without marcus smart on the floor how much negatively impacts this team and it's on the defense event for one the celtics looked like a tired team going into the all star break and some of that with the schedule some of that was just legitimately being tired but a lot of it was losing smart if we've seen anything if we've learned anything from the last eight years of celtics basketball if that sometimes you can have a defensive player a guy that is relentless on that end of the floor that brings at intensity and energy to that side of the floor and out palpable that can be to everybody else kevin garnett was that guy marcus smart not on that level clearly but in terms of relentless defense terms of picking everybody else's defence of energy up yes smart can be of that kind of a cog in the wheel for the celtics and not having that is something that significant something they're going to miss over the course of the next power for many weeks he's out if it's in the post season that's going to be a big loss for the celtics and you'll see it on the offense event again frustrating shots will happen you know he sometimes eat you'll take four at a game and you look back you wish it was two six in you wish it was four but i still rather have marcus smart taking the majority of those shots as opposed to terry rozier i as opposed to shane larkin who again is still not in a position where he's going to be back at one hundred percent at least two terms admits so there's not a lot right there in terms of death and when you saw rose year half to take more shots what he pressed into service more again going into the all star break it was something that he struggled with and you saw date even though marcus smart's a little bit frustrating earth sometimes a lot frustrating when he's on offense chuck it up 3s it's not any better with rose year on.

"Talked by marcus smart presumably whether you'll make an allstar team or not so peter you're up next night harvey and crew all rock the are you just do that no no no and i can i make medgyessy believe you may okay uh to be the rick any merchant through wanting news have better offensively embittered peaceful actively will mark the smart is on the floor i agree look of any any metric to warn two um he i think he might be the best defensive player in the nba and the in this is this is what i'm worried about the celtics are ten are up against a salary cap he and he's a restricted free agent is they can't sign marcus smart's okay and they add gordon hayward to me they're not a better team 'cause marcus smart makes the second unit co so i don't know all the logistics of the uh salary cap but it seems like are precedents it so there's some team offers him a ton of money celtics got match uttamote the kemba thick asks do is so important to this team you know i first of all i agree with almost everything you said now he's not making an allstar team be all you can do all that he's not make an allstar team but he does he potentially is making himself some money and putting himself the celtics in a position rich maybe they be me think they were going to be an because you look at that run before the allstar break without marcus smart how'd that look at look good in in in how does it look with going against these good teams without marcus smart it does not look the same so when he says oh well you know you the trade off a gordon hayward and marcus smart's can get uncomfortable this might be something too that there may be some marcus smart has become a very very important piece of this whole puzzle much more important than i think anyone who has written willing to admit before this year i'm not ruling out though the idea and this is sort of a separate but related conversation on marcus smart that he's not back but there's the blockbuster move to be made whether it's something for anthony davis see you know something that once again changes.

"Marcus smart will be a restricted free agent this summer and i understand that restricted verse unrestricted is a factor here marcus smart will do well to get more than the mid level and the only place he's probably getting more than the mid level is boston and the mid level is seven point eight other it's gonna be like eight secs summer annoyed six up here i'm sorry eight six and it's going to be very difficult for marcus smart to come to grips with that um and that has nothing to do the only thing is to do is what timing and so if you're lou williams in if you're the clippers especially um i think that you can you can surmise that you may be able to to keep lou williams at a number that doesn't upset the applecart at a number of years doesn't upset the applecart you rolling the dice on that a little bit but it may keep your second you know the last part of your season an entertaining but i just i just think this summer you know a guy like marcus smart is going to be the test case for yupao we could have gotten sixteen or seventeen million two years ago he may if he's lucky get ten million i would almost wager less than ten million i don't want to go too long into this because were already going long as it is um but brian when do the bulk of players get upset that the union refused caps smoothing a couple of years ago because the floors lou what you're talking about about july six two thousand eighteen.

"Just there's not that many offensively jason tatum sure offensively career being sure and offensively s al horford too and horford even defensively i think has shown that he can against certain opponents not against everybody marcus smart gives it to everybody i mean there's not it doesn't seem like anyone ever has a good game against marcus smart and that to me is is something that you know as you look at the way this team is developing and what they've sort of morphed into from last year to this year losing jae crowder and avery bradley that's a big blow to your defence that's a big blow to your defence of identity as a team you don't just recover from that unless you have a guy like marcus smart on the roster is able to go out there and of carry that torch by himself and it's not that he's the only guy plan a defense obviously jaylen brown is a tremendous uh defensive player even in the second year here tatum i think is improving he's not quite there yet but he's he's good longest off the dribble around and he's tough to post up horford i think he's having a nice year defensively in aaron bain's you know kind of comes and goes but really the heart and soul this defense in the heart and soul of what makes this team good defensively is is marcus smart i really believe that and you know you might have thought it was avery bradley you might have thought it was the three of them bradley crowder and smart altogether but is smart showing that he can do that she can handle this on his own and you really saw that on display with a big breaking national spotlight on them in that houston game against an mvp k guy runnerup in the mvp race leisure you're the guy who led the league in scoring and assists last year gene his arja and could very easily i mean he's a he's the leader out of the clubhouse right now and marcus smart stepped up in it that does you can't take something that looked liked that lightly you can't take a twenty six point comeback lightly and you can't take that that lasts five minutes of that game with smart was able to do against hard it was huge and that.

"In the year uh as is improved himself his numbers and his play every single year these been the nba the gone up which is really unheard of i mean just steady improvement now he's got this year were you know with this obvious physical setback but if gordon can come and be a you know a great contributor an allstar level you know i i that sky's the limit for us over the next five years but don't know exactly how to play up yeah i mean i know there are a lot of passionate celtics fans i don't know how much they get to see western conference basketball whining know about gordon hayward is that he was the best player on a team the utah jazz last year that made the playoffs in the west in the west is a difficult place to make the playoffs western conference allstar which is saying something yeah exactly i mean you look at the players it over there so i mean he's he's a very very good players will be really interesting to see how he sort of assimilate into this team once he gets back healthy you mentioned you know having added star not necessarily a big decision you have to make but a big decision you guys do have to make that coming up the end of the season what to do with marcus smart smarts of really unique player wake in that when you look it has may be box score stats are what is shooting percentages and right now it's thirty one point three it doesn't tell the full story of his impact on the games how do you guys evaluate what marcus smart's value is to the boston celtics now will there's a theme here chris of i'm not gonna talk about contract negotiations in advance so you can ask but i'm not going to answer that i ask how how do we well you can ask of it's a little boring if i just say i'm not going to answer but we evaluate marcus smart game by game along with all the other players and he's a phenomenal contributor he's you know a real heart and soul glue guy for the team he makes so many plays the contribute to winning at when we've won a game you.

"Golden state game he was brutal shooting ball knocked when a carries buckets literally out of the body to as lawyers away from just which is not ideal and he still played to a like a plus twenty at the end of the night i know a lot as the other four guys on the court meal plusminus can be a little bit misleading at times but some of that is here him and it's what he can do on the defensive end it's what he can do rebounding what he can do creating shot so getting the most out of marcus smart's minutes and and it's crazy the eighteen games in these are the the nitz that were picking but this is a sixteen into team i at i think carries answered the question about whether he can always centered on his star yeah i think jason tatum has answered the question to this point about whether danny ainge got the most nba ready guy in jaylen brown as is answering any question you could possibly think he was the only other guy outside aci reid who really gave them a lot consistently on offense last night so these are the types of things are looking at marcus smart's the biggest one for me going forward can you get the good for marcus smart because it's there let limit the bad and the big thing it to me it shot selection and just being willing to the other sixteen seconds on the shot clock fifty on the shot clock pass up an open three you don't need a shock and i don't like his chances of making it i don't like him having taken fifteen shots and taking 11 threes that goes out his faris a good free throw shooter if he wants to post up smaller or even just weaker point guards great if he wants to try to get some more shots in the paint crates buddies just taking too many long jumpers and too many 3s which is an issue for for him i i think the positives outweigh the negatives with him and no it's easy to look at his is shooting percentage everything else i don't think that's all of a sudden going to change so i guess the only thing i guess if you're brad stevens and this is the ross that you have maybe just try to make sure he's out on the.

"Have listened to me on this radio station and other radio stations and redmi in various newspapers know that i've said this a thousand times that's marcus smart has been drafted the celtics marcus smart will never live up to being the sixth pick in the draft if you were the twentythird pick overall in the first round at telia fans around here with love him there would be zero question whether marcus smart was a building block for the future because if he's the twentythird pick in the draft while he suddenly in over cheever and he's a dirt dog needs all these things that we love here in boston but unfortunately marcus smart was a laundry pick and i don't think you'll ever have the offense of prowess to go out there live up to being the number six overall pick in the draft david price the same situation i don't think there's anything that david price can do to sort of make up for his sins of his first couple years here and he's added to those since this year because those since i think last year yeah he was a bit of a jerk but most of his sins were on the field and at the end of the season yet had a pretty good season if you looked at his numbers they weren't nearly as bad as fans made them out to be with all of that being said this guy this year coupled with the injury in his outburst what a whether it's eckersley or evans relic in these other things to if you listen to what's being said in that clubhouse i think it's bad attitude has permeated throughout the clubhouse and that's another problem that we can sort of pin on david price because when you've got somebody that impactful that powerful in the locker room setting and they're that negative it's a venture really go to permeate the entire locker room the entire clubhouse and i think that's what's happening here with the red sox and david price and that's why i ask.
