"So you lose some of that, I'm curious what would have come out of the Celtics locker room had people been able to be in there and how different that might have been, how different these things may have come across. It is weird though to say jaylen brown's available and then suddenly he's not. So something obviously, obviously changed there. And again, that's something where had this been two years ago, you probably would have had a better sense of what was going on because you would have seen it in person. Yeah, or what would have happened is and this happened regularly is they player would have hung out in this room that I would see them and it would have been. All right, you guys were done. Everybody out and then that's when they would have finally come out. It was the players had to work at it a little bit more, whereas now yeah, the team generally says, here's who we're providing. Some of the some of the franchises will ask kind of the key be writers. Hey, who they want tonight and then they'll kind of say, oh yeah, give me XY and Z stars in the game or whatever in that case. So yeah, it's for me is this should have been one where if they're the leaders of the team, jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum should have said, we're going to talk and should have said, well, we'll come out. We're going to take it on the chin here. We're going to go through it with the media and say, it is what it is. And yeah, well, we'll take the hits and go from there and instead it was left to Marcus smart now, Horford, to take all of it. And that's just truly frustrating. It was going into last night's game. Other than the Toronto game where they get completely outplayed out hustled and everything. You could really look at it and say, all right, there were they lost some double over time to the next. They lost a close game to Washington at home, where they could have won. Then they lost in double over time to the wizard. She could have been looking at it very easily saying, all right, this seems to him four, but they could be. Absolutely, maybe even 5 and one. It's really was that Toronto one was the only one that was outright butt kicking loss. And then you come back into this one, they're right there, they had it, and it just completely fell apart on them. Now, I don't want to go too crazy again. We're only 7 games into the season. At least the last couple games this hasn't been a game where conversation about effort and all that stuff with the Celtics. But it's just some of the same old issues, keep coming up, and that's just not a good place. First of all, the Jalen Brown situation, that's not a good look. Marcus smart, I think it's pretty clear that the intent was not what people are making it out to be. But I think big picture, the solution of this is obvious Keith, you have to fire udoka. Fired fire the coat. That's the problem that's going to fix everything. Oh, no, wait, sorry. That's the Twitter trolls. Take on the situation. As I said on that because there are some people, right? You know the same. You have the same thing with the Lakers fans that I have with the salt experience..

"marcus smart" Discussed on NBA Front Office w/ Keith Smith & Trevor Lane

"Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the NBA front office show. We've got a lot of news to break down a bunch of things going on in the NBA Keith. Let's kick things off with Marcus smart, his comments about the Celtics, another tough loss for Boston, you go ahead and get going on that. I'll be back at about 20 minutes or so. That work? Yeah, that's perfect. I would say go grab a sandwich, but it's a little late at night with full ice cream or something. You know, go get things set up for the Lakers game. It's gonna start here in about an hour. So that's right when you can just kick your feet up. But yeah, not good times in Boston. Through and let's call it 20 well 24, probably about 34 minutes of their game against the bulls. They look really good. They were absolutely dominating Chicago. They came out with good energy. Getting the ball up and down the floor, really playing really good defense, making a bunch of plays. And then with about two minutes to go in the third quarter, develop a couple baskets. And at the time, maybe didn't seem like a big deal. But those are the ones that kind of bite you because that's where you give the team hope. We talk about that a lot, especially with bad teams, but it happens with good teams too. And it would have been very easy for the bulls to say, but we've got off to this really good start we're on the road. Let's pack it in. And then in the fourth quarter, the Celtics became the first team and the shot clock error. So almost 60 years of basketball to or almost over 60 years, maybe closest getting close to 70 years to have a lead of 14 or more points in the fourth quarter and lose by 14 or more points as there were outscored 39 to 11. Not a record. A couple more quick, bad stats. The bulls shot 13 of 16 in the quarter. They are there three misses. They rebounded two of them themselves. And then the third one went out of bounds for a team rebound back to the bulls. The Celtics had zero defensive rebounds in the quarter and Boston was I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was something bad of a lot of shot attempts themselves in zero free from three. So this is not the full scale breakdown show. We're not doing that. We're going to do a lot of news because what came after that is where it got really kind of messy. He made duca did his normal thing just for those who don't know. Process is almost always the head coach speaks first. In postgame media. And then because we're in this new zoom world, there's no scrum set up where you can just approach prayers. What it becomes is now the teams provide X amount of players to the podium in the arena where whoever is covering the game in person will be..

"He has to be a player that is one of the of the number 60 ranking among all players in the league. Yeah, and again, it is relatively high when you think of you're basically talking about two players per team. You're putting Marcus into a big three sort of conversation to say, yeah, you've got it. You've got to be a foundational piece alongside the two J's here in order for this to be successful. And again, it's just it's one publications list, but it's always interesting to talk about just in terms of what's it going to be like this year. And again, the expectations are high. One person who was one of the first ones left out of the top 100 was our man rob Williams. And I'm gonna say more so than anybody else and we talked about this a lot during the course of the season and early on in the off season. The importance of rob Williams not only being healthy, but taking another leap. And to me, you know how I feel. I've always thought that if there's a third all star on this team, it's rob Williams. There's no question about that. I don't think it's Marcus. I don't think it's anybody else. I don't think it's any of the other young kids that I ever get to that. It's rob Williams. And in order for this team to get past where they were last year or better than a second round exit sort of team, you're going to need people to step up. And rob Williams to me is the biggest X Factor. It wouldn't be stunning if he came in this year charade and put up all defensive numbers and was on the cusp of an all star selection or if we saw a guy who played a few games, then got hurt, was a little bit ineffective. Rides the bench from time to time, splits minutes with Al Horford. I really don't know which version we're gonna get. And we have no visibility into this. We haven't seen him. We have no Instagram workouts, nothing. The person I'm most intrigued to see when we get to go to media day and a couple of weeks is rob Williams. Kim and email are all looking to see what the hell is going on. The thing about rob is that the only reason he's outside of that top 100 is because of that very fact that he doesn't stay healthy, long enough to where you can get a full valuation of his impact. I agree that he has more potential to be an all star in part because of his potential, but also because there's just a lack of centers, other than Joel embiid and boost of it, there's really no not a lot of centers in the Eastern Conference that you can look at and just kind of pretty much check them off as being all stars. So rob is definitely. I think if you can stay healthy, he will be in that conversation. But to your other point, rob has to be, and I'm gonna go Brad Stevens on you. The best version of himself. There's no doubt about that. Season long. We can't have this ten 15 game stretches where he's amazingly awesome. And then ten, 15 game stretches, where he's just just awful. Yeah. There has to be consistency with his play this year. If he is supposed to, frankly, be one of the top 100 players, which I think from a talent standpoint, he is that good. But he has to prove it where it matters on the court..

"Boston sports journal, Greg bedard and Greg, I guess the morning after question on the Patriots 25 to 6 win over the jets. Was it a good winner or a bad win? It was a win. I would not say it was a good win. I mean, look, when the opponent are rebuilding opponent, gives you four interceptions before even the halfway point in the third quarter. And you need to basically make some defensive stands in the fourth quarter to win that game. It's not a good one. It's just not. And I don't know why people are trying to talk themselves into it. It wasn't. I mean, a lot of the stuff that they had issues with in week one from past protection, stopping the run getting off the field in key points. I mean, they got a little bit better at that. But in general, there was a little bit of improvement incremental overall, not with the run defense, I thought it was, I thought it was worse in this game. The jets almost averaged almost 5 yards of carry. And really, if they just stuck to the ground, they probably would have been in this game till the very end. But no, I did not think it was a good win. It was a win that it was a win that they needed to get. They got it. What's not right home about it? Yeah. I guess in addition to the things that you mentioned with the run defense, the protection, obviously, was was rough. And the trend Brown injury certainly is a huge deal. They start one tackle. They have to yank him, you know, Durant there early in the first half, just because things weren't going well. It just seemed like Mac was never able to get comfortable in the pocket. I guess the question is, how much of it was on game planning? How much of it was on personnel limitations, whether it be down a tackle or getting to know the receivers where it's just still, you're not able to open things up. I guess as you wrote in your column for Boston sports journal Greg, everyone's got to be a little bit patient. And I think that's the problem is nobody is patient. You want to see them open it up. And it's not just to get to where you were in the best days of Tom Brady where the offense could just march up and down the field and score. I think even seeing what you saw from Mac Jones in week one, gave you enough confidence to think, okay, they can do a little more than they're doing here. And you can see it almost felt like a step back offensively where, I mean, just yards per attempt. Everything was even more conservative than it was in week one. In a game where you've felt like they might have been able to open it up a little bit..

But were you surprised that Brad Stevens emptied wick and packaged his bank account for so although it doesn't mean you can't still can't trade them you know so I understand that. And I know I know where you'll find this heart desire is Jeff Goodman. But you know I am a suck up a sickle pant a cult follower a devotee a fan of that young man's. "marcus smart" Discussed on Winning Plays

"Funds tenuous song. Let's talk about Bradley Beal on the topic of the Celtics, top ten 3-pointers. Maybe, maybe at some point. And in 2027, when we're doing this podcast, will talk about Bradley Beal being extension, 222 pass Ray Allen, the, the smart signing the extension. It really doesn't change much about the pursuit of Bradley Beal. Not not, when it comes to be, I don't think because ultimately we've talked about this before the the more likelier path to Beale was always going to be a trade or a sign-and-trade Thursday and smart being under contract. Now doesn't change, like doesn't impact anything you can do up a trade or sign and trade like he could you could sign and trade for Bill and have them including that deal. You could potentially sign trade for Bill and your find a way to keep smart and give them everything else. So that Dynamic doesn't change. But it does, it does take away table. The, you know, DAC and the the back pocket of saying the threat to hold over teams when you were like talking trade be like, hey, we get him up cap room and and give you nothing and sign you out right away. Like that threat is gone now. And all I did was with this deal end and, you know, I'm sure the Celtics front office. Look at this time of year for Alstrom all sorts of angles and then decided that hey, this is dead. You know, we think this contract is going to age well, and we think the, the pros of having smart under contract, for being here or elsewhere, we're going to deal for the next four years, is better than having him on the contract here and then having that extra flexibility to to open up cap room. Yeah, in terms of Marcus, potentially being traded friend of mine. Said, that's a text today, that made sense and maybe this is out there. I don't know. He's Brett. My friend, Brendan is the one I'm giving is as my source, but you're saying that. And it comes to trade talks, Marcus Smart. Like we said, is your third most valuable player, you're not trading one in two most valuable players. So if there is a trade it is, most likely going to involve Marcus Smart. I mean, is paying pressures of your most valuable player, though, is after advertising programs. And where was that from day one? That's really afford. Not a problem for him. Ya know. He's, that was impressive and he get a plate. Is he going to play tonight? We're in the street. He's, he's playing tonight. He talked his way back. Any, he he had the old bulb quote prior engagement to leave Vegas. I dominated after three games and wanted to play in. This one counter may be something else going on. Who knows? But obviously the team was totally going to fit. Most guys, take off three games anyway, and then but now they made that championship and the guy the guy wants the ball. So he's he's back in Vegas and I think wine have the Celtics ever won a summer league title. I don't think so. And he could be legendary night tonight could be, could be historic. That's exciting. But what, when you look at I also wonder too with.

"Back winning players podcast for Slovenian Brian rob. You and I both woke up this morning, always always something to celebrate, but Marcus Smart wakes up with nearly eighty million dollars. It's not in his bank account yet, but it's all but guaranteed, we can say, congrats to Marcus. I think first. I mean, that's a, it's a hard earn 80 million dollars. I mean, he's going to be, he's set up now to play what twelve years of the Celtics. If he plays out this contract, which is a rarity in this day and age. I don't know if it's going to happen. We'll talk about that later, but not only get interests for the Celtics. I'd say good news for the name of this podcast. Mr. Mr. Running plays is sticking around, not that, not that way. I won't live on, you know, can apply to wherever but perhaps the master of the winning plays again, for more years in Boston, which takes them through, what was it 2026 like that? Anybody like 26,000. So set up for maybe twelve years and set up in many ways, generationally, which is awesome. It's Supermarket. What do you what do you think of the deal? First and foremost just in general? Like is this did it for years? I received the max this other could offer him four year. 77 million dollars. Was it just a simple factor of saying? Hey, let's we know, you're not going to be happy this year. You're probably going to be worth this money. So let's like, let's, let's let's pay you. So you're happy going into this year. Yeah. I mean, I don't, I don't see Marcus's one of those guys who's going to be unhappy about his contract and let it show on the court, for whatever reason. I think it was just, but even off the court, so, that's just as important. I think of a theme like this. Yeah. No, that's true. And, and it could also, I don't mean this, as a knock against Marcus, but it could be lack of better. Options were like, maybe they were some other things they would have rather done jerk, but those things did not work out. So now you're looking at the current situation and you're saying this is the best deal for now and it might also be the best best deal for the next couple of years, but I think one thing and we'll get, we're going to talk about whether or not Marcus is probably wage. Get rid of whether or not, he's not afraid whether or not he will get traded whether we think that he actually will still be here in in 2026. But I think one thing we know for, pretty sure is October 20th..

Detroit Pistons Sign Luka Garza

"Luke garza could actually become a real. Nba player that guy that one collegiate player of the year and yet nobody wanted and is drafted in the nba draft What ended up with twenty and fourteen or something. Last night he was. He was outstanding Again he has dow signed a two way deal. So luger's who does nobody been. It's he'll end up getting four The pistons but luca garza signed a two two way deal. He of course had a historic collegiate career at iowa. But he was you know by all accounts slow-footed big played near around the basket and so was of no use to people in the nba. And yet he made threes. He put up to huge double doubles and in their finale. Last night ends it with twenty one point and fifteen rebounds and got himself a two way contract so the luka garza dream is still alive after getting selected fifty second in the nba draft. He was good and he's fun. You know he's a real throwback but I i love the idea of becoming you know. Just the there's i went back and looked kevin. There's never been a guy like you by where this has happened work. I becomes the naismith player of the year in college basketball. Nobody wants him now. Not all of them have panned out. I e like the tyler hands boroughs but tolerance was like a lottery pick. I think frank mason might be the lowest and he was like at the beginning of the second round nobody. There's not even close to being selected. Fiftieth or fifty. Second whatever you've picked.

"Very phoney, a u e, Like I said, I I liked Fournier. He was what he was again. We we had this conversation right after the trade deadline. What are they going to do with Fournier? We would have had the conversation we're having now we had the day, they acquired Fournier which was this is going to be difficult for them. They're going to have crazy choices to make because if they re-signed Fournier and extend smart, they will have the most expensive non contending team, you know, in the NBA and that we, we, that was obvious then. And so what did they do? And and you were saying, they might have to pick one or the other they did. They didn't want to do both. They didn't want to be saddled with both contracts. So they had, they re-signed Marcus. They let Fournier walk. That was it. It's interesting cuz you wondering am I didn't have that market Bobby. You wonder if if fornia was here and they gave him, he signed three and thirty nine or three and forty two here instead. If Marcus would be gone because it makes a little dog. More than smart cuz he can shoot like, that's your salary in this league. Kind is proportional you're shooting ability. And for me is a much better shooter than smart. So it does actually make sense that he got a little bit more than smart right off like way more than smart if we're just basing off, guys, shooting abilities. Sure. So like, you know, you actually did ask a very tough question to start the show. There. You have three point guards. Now, I'm starting point guards, really, and you're missing a wing. So would it have made more sense to kind of have a shoulder in a Richardson there and have phony on the wing. I don't know, like both ends of the team-building standpoint that might have worked out better than this did, but there really does seem to be kind of like a heart string attachment to Smart hear, that they've had a tough time shaking. And that certainly went into this to the song manic report and it's funny because I mean, you know, even even you were ready to move on at the deadline, it would convinced ourselves for like it's probably time that the Marcus Smart arrows over and and now we've got four more years. Which is interesting. The you know, like it's never going to end is ever going to end. What what I'll say what I always say is, you know, you know, doing what I do, you know, and just watch sports and media and all of this stuff. And for all of these years, the number one thing I like our stories having Marcus Smart around is good because because he's so polarizing because he's so interesting because people have such strong opinions about him. He's been the center of Celtics talked on this network since like, yeah day. He was drafted. Yeah, pretty much is Giannis, media's job like center of attention. So you you know me. I love, I love stories. I love you know, stuff stuff that the best thing is having having something that people are Faithfully passionate about on both sides and Marcus Smart, is that thing and it'll continue here, you know, and and we'll see. You know, what you're hoping is there's a version of Marcus Smart that again That makes everybody happy but there's a world to which. It goes in the wrong direction and everybody's, you know, really pissed off too..

"Next, a big ball handlers and all those spots and a problem here is he's still kind is right. Yeah, he smart. It's going to be on the ball a ton and then he's probably, you know Schroeder's your bench point guard. So like he's an off-ball computer again kind of in this situation may be a secondary ball-handler, a but I don't know. Like he may just casually threw out there. We're going to get a shooting back up and it's like is this is this kind of a role where that's going to be conducive? The doing that, I don't know, I guess what you're looking at. If the attention, if, if, if you've got, if you've got Tatum and I mean, it look at it this way, if you're a number to offensive option on our team, you know, that means you get x amount of attention drawn your way. But you've got robbed with, you know, whatever, gravity. He's pulling his way going to the basket and the two J's who are going to attract attention. You have to imagine in that lineup. Richardson would get a fair share of open looks theoretically if they play next to Luka and and bead and wasn't able to get the benefit of that. So, I don't know you'll see how it comes around. He's really just going to have to hammer down that catch-and-shoot game of his and they hasn't been great the last few years as really what's held him down as an offensive player and a defense. So he's going to fit right in this team. A whole is really going to have to offset a lot of its off. I mean Richardson is pretty I was pretty average pretty League average in most things offensively. So yes, it's not he's not ideal your birth. Hoping you're hoping you facing on this team could be a challenge. You're right. Nesmith needs to break into this rotation here, pretty solidly, just for the purpose of. All right. This is your knock down shooter. Maybe Sam Houser, as we talked about fits in the some of these lapses, just an automatic student, cuz they really are going to need some shooting here with smart. Richardson shrewd, really not a good 3-point shooter at all referred a good for a center, but not a great 3-point shooter day, like not enough. Yeah, not enough. It's again. You just don't it's going to. We've seen these Celtics teams before we're home. A lot of guys can take the three like the Jae Crowder teams like, but everyone is the same everyone shoots 36% you know, like there are not on more extreme than that. I think. Yeah, but you should have seen those teams where like they get a lot of open. Looks are just not great at knocking them down. So those teams were really good cuz they had a strong defense of floor and this team has an even higher defense of home. Those groups. I mean, I said this last year and it came back to bite me, but this looks like the makings of a team. That could be number one on defense and leave you look, it doesn't, it'll happen. Make up for it cuz you're right. You are lacking in a little bit shooting here. When you're a defensive team. There's not as much variance. But this is why night in and night out. This is why not to overreact everything we've seen in summer league. This is why I am seeing Pritchard do what he's doing and seeing Nesmith doing what he's doing on a team that sorely needs shooting and it was funny as Nesmith isn't even a doing it, but with spot up shooting he's actually been you know, getting his life. It's being a little bit more aggressive getting to the basket, you know, a little in-between game..

"At the time and this is a takeout. There was a this is a Celtics Homer place and the place lost its mind off every Bradley, eight million, four, four over four years. Are you crazy? And I was like, no, another one like that always like this deal is an absolute slam dunk. What is wrong with you song? People like this will be a bargain in ten minutes, you know, so it's this smart deal of reminds me a little of that which is like this is a it's still good to have this player and I don't think you're going to reach a point. He's twenty-seven you're not going to this isn't in year 2, it's not a Kemba deal or whatever where it's like, well, you know, you know, yours three and four aren't going to be good, but you'll get to Elite package. Really good years before the decline. He's still in his prime, you know at 27 years old. You're not worried about steep decline here. Okay. If you have this level of Marcus Smart for four years out, fine, it's fine to do that. It's just. Does it get you any closer to being a contender or was that did you have to take a different path to get there and wondered that one? That did not involve Marcus Smart. That's, that's the only question as it is, you're right? And that's why I think it's a bit of a hedge. You're fine. If he stays here and all he does is play it out. Yeah, the right answer is dead. Sara Lee siphoning town and then who knows? You could have gone in the next season after a great year from him in a starting point guard and maybe I had a potentially pay more, you know, like this. Is this actually I thought was a really good cap on what they would like cuz this under the rules was the most like a Pam and actually was a pretty good number and it's great because at all and it's great actually because the Celtics can say this is the most I've got an and it works for both for them. And for Marcus it's like this is pretty close to what I'm going to get anyway, so I'll just take it. So it is, you're right. It is it works for both sides here off. The one thing. I'll put my son, ehat on. Okay, you know, I tend to look at things know, but you look at things critically and again, for me, it's a, do they know what they're doing? And what the next move is. I'm not sure. But again, I do think the, the Hedge is what makes sense. You know, it's just a championship contending team. Know, without major things breaking their way, players reaching new levels or New Heights that we offer. Expect like a nice myth or a Rob or something like that. No, probably not but to be to put like a you know, a sunny perspective on it. We have not had a year-long Marcus Smart has never in his career had a year where it said, it's your balls on take it, you're the guy run the show. Be the point guard from from ever for from, from from years in the league till now, he's been stuck at as a tweener a bench guy, playing some to playing backup, point guard thrust into the starting, Lona, starting lineup at times, but he's never had one roll..

"Who kind of back-to-back tweeted this. But what, what a sham sweets or one of his reports is Marcus Smart slated to become the starting point guard. Phone number. Celtics to season, I don't know where this is from so I don't know if this is a promises made the Marcus. I don't know if it's a yes, we got dentist in here. Well, we are corresponding report that the Celtics home made no promises to Schroeder. So those kind of fit hand inhale, right? And so you wonder if like was there finessing on as part of this with Marcus like you're our guy. Don't worry about this blah blah. I have no idea but it definitely seems that that's being put out there by somebody that this Marcus is here to be the starter sort of guy. So there's this component to English. Well, but, you know, let's just assume that they're, you know, have been conversations or this is look, nothing is etched in stone. You don't sign in your contract that you're going to be the starter. They can do whatever they, they can do whatever they want to do, but it makes sense. That the intention is from Marcus to be the starting point guard on this team. E, may allude to this. There was a bit of foreshadowing to this a couple of days ago, when, when you guys talked to him a dog, I know you got in Vegas and you guys got a chance to talk to him and maybe you can paraphrase it better than I can. But it was along the lines of we're going to have. We're going to run the ball through Market Marcus handful. These ask for it and we're going to give it to him. Yeah, and so you you really get the feeling that the conversations being had here are You're going to be our point guard. We're going to give you money for the next a bunch of years, but I need you to be a point guard, you know, like and so like I said, it seemed a had a couple of comments that you could read a couple different ways. It was very positive about what the expectations are. But also the subtext. Was, I need you to be less of that other thing and that other thing could be the guy who's jacking 10123 game, which is again. I know it's in the in the chat here and the commenters, the thing that drives. Go in the contract. Yeah, you can you put that the card? If you shoot 10 threes, you got you lose. We drop a year, you know, how long he could have body fat cause in his last contract? Yeah, three point attempts per game class, but that's the thing is, so you do get the feeling that like, this is off the, he did just retweet the manics report by the way, which is, which is funny who did Marcus. "LIVE edition Garden report, we're not going to hang out forever. But we did want to jump on and talk a little bit about breaking news. We had tonight which is the Marcus Smart contract extension Marcus Smart. This is something that was reported. What was about a week and a half ago before summer league for sure. A couple of weeks ago Bobby. Yeah, right before assignment League. We were kicking this around that 7 million number and that's ultimately what it's settled on here. They're going to be going on them. 213-2677 was the number thrown out. It was amended 268 77 is a Max that could pay a month and it escalates as time goes on so it starts. It goes Seventeen. Nineteen ninety-eight like twenty twenty two or something like that. Like yeah. Yeah. So this is what life is now. It's interesting because, you know, we talked about it a bit when it was first reported. What does it mean you have, you know, it was curious when the report first came out wage. Because at the same time, you had reports of Marcus, Smart was possibly going to be traded because he's a bit of a headache and they wanted to move on. There were signs last year that things weren't working. You know, he's a very polarizing player wage obviously, got people on both sides of it. So there's going to be. I mean, already, I was in the chats just while you were while you were getting ready and jumping on here and a bunch of people love it. And a bunch of people are like, why did we do this so bad reactions going to be all over the map here? What, what's interesting to me is again what it means for the plans. Going forward for a while. When the offseason began life seemed like the Celtics were saving up all of their space and didn't want to do anything and then news of the smart thing comes out. It's like, oh, I guess that's not the case. Now everyone's wondering what does this mean? So, you know, we all we've been kicking this around and nobody really knows what it does mean. For a fact is look it bill was really hard..

"All three of them have slipped because of the bigger offensive all that they've taken on that usually happens in the NBA. It's just a natural thing Kawhi Leonard. If you look at quite an honor these last two years, he has not been a very good Defender and he's known as the best defender in the universe. Do you see it based off of assignment choices the last time they played Kauai? He's not guarding Tatum. Yeah. All right, that's just and that's you know, like it's all this blame replacing on every page and perfect because should should smart be the third option on the team like he has been for most of this year probably not but he should be on the bench and fixating on defense, but because of the rest of the Danny and Trent place, that's the wrong had to take on so like, you know, it's not us just ruined smart saying he's being lazy or you know, not not he's not even physically the defender. He's in the past. We know it's he's capable of it but on this team In this current role a fact is a fact, he just hasn't been the same Defender this year. No. Fine. Yeah fine. I mean listen, but what type of level he's he's ready player game player. Just wait because his value his value supposedly transcends the numbers or what you see or it's based on intangibles long as we're always no matter what that are you going to go because you're going to see it's that lines you're going to see shooting percentages. You're going to see the the those games where he's you know, jacking tons of Threes games where he said he has elapsed since he has a three-point frigging here the other day and then breaks down, you know, the you know, the next three plays after that and the Celtics kind of fought, you know, go in the tank against New Orleans. There's a lot of them is a polarizing figure because of look I mean, we're not talking about people forget about Marcus Smart a lot of times like the waves they've ridden with him as an organization over the years. I mean there was there was times where the quad Was can you keep this guy around anymore? And obviously he's right at that ship and he's kind of Taken on the role of like the spiritual, you know and emotional leader on the team. But I mean this guy has been all over the map with it you throw in in consistencies and in efficiencies, he's a lightning rod. He's always been he always will be till years after he's gone. That's not going to change. Yeah, okay. Let me ask you this John. How do you decide you mentioned that he he's all I'd be a defense. How many times have you ever on this show you ever mentioned it? I've mentioned it to talk about whether or not it's legit..

Kawhi Leonard Danny Marcus Smart John Trent Tatum three-point Celtics third option three Kauai this year New Orleans three plays NBA year last two years tons games

"And dirtier one handled gloves that he was the worst shortstop in the league okay. It's a designation by media members. It doesn't matter which. You're just talking about marcus smart right now. Because you're you're salty of solving forty eight and you're thinking men who marcus smart has turned into the ultimate scapegoat for every single south. He wasn't out there. But we're talking about marcus smart. I don't get it. I love the fire and i swear it's great but honestly like if you think i invented my marcus smart. Take tonight watching. Evan -fornia you haven't been listening to me for the last using it has like all minnesota missed out on hugh trade. Who's the huge trade. Who wasn't aaron gordon. What's the alternative not missed out my grievances if smart was really on the table and if smart was on the table and we pulled it back. I think it was a mistake number two. I don't actually think it was ever on the table. So because because he is eric gordon. Who's nice. Hey i think so. I can watch random fifty. We'll see how great he looks for the frequent nuggets. And i'll get you a jersey there you go. I think i think there's a real case with these bad teams the kings one hundred percent. Think this because. I know for a fact that when the kings had a chance to offer him an offer sheet and then he went on to have a couple of really good years and got better for boston after that the kings were kicking themselves because they have had him for thirteen million a year and they decided not to go in on that israel. I'm around the league. One of you're talking about smart. Yeah one of the worst. No one offered anything. Create one of the worst run franchises in the history of sports is mad about that mistake. But that's why bad teams want him. They think he can create something in those places. I ended up one of those teams. We went through this already and was they basically told them. Hey man go go find your deal. If you think you've got a better you don't think that a team who a guy that was demanding a trade. Saying i'm done. I'm not playing here anymore. Was gonna pass up in opportunity to take a guy like smart. Who could rev up the young team. I the year. There is a long-term could say long-term and the reality is smart and players like him have negative value these days because it's the worst. The worst value in sports the over is the overpriced middle. I know but what's the value of gary harris. Who's on a three year deal making like fourteen million a year. Rj hampton. Who's like i love him..

aaron gordon eric gordon Evan gary harris fourteen million Rj hampton tonight marcus smart one hundred percent three year forty eight thirteen million a year One fornia israel fifty number two single boston hugh trade

"That's a tough one to make in terms of what you need now versus the time i know bahrain's has three years so maybe that would make more sense but he wasn't available so as awesome. Would you do this for gordon still. I would have really considered you know. If it comes down the gordon like i i think i'd be grudgingly. Say yes because. I think there's upside there but it was a normal wrist to make and i understand why they didn't do it because it was it was i know i think it was. I think he was just neighbor. You don't think that that's a better deal including these methods list replaced argentine through with never ever ever. What's marcus smart's value tonight. Magic never believed the losing team wanted marcus smart. It makes no wanted marcus smart in in a walk year. I way makes his name phone around from boston. Yes it was boston. Trust me there is no way it made no sense to me. And then all of a sudden reports started coming out late from boston. Writers about you'd be surprised. How many teams out there are actually interested in markets. That was fed. Okay that was. There's no way that didn't originate in boston. Because it's trying to make it seem like oh okay. They're trying to drum up his value. Several teams want smart. Well maybe i should want me some smart. I didn't even think about him. There's no way that was real. Because just jimmy said it makes no sense. What does orlando in a tear down rebuild. Want guy in here who they have to pay real money to next year when they're trying to sell away other veteran players. You're getting rid of vucevic and gordon to welcome in smart. What are we talking about. That's ludicrous ludicrous. You're getting rid of veterans for to swap it out for a bench guy. You're making it sound like hughes. You think the celtics wanted to offer smart over. I think the celtics recognizing that they really did have almost nothing. Anybody wanted because it. Nobody wants needs smith or romeo and the picture low So there's really nothing. The only theoretical tradable asset on this team is marcus smart. So you had to make it appear as if marcus smart had value a it value beyond the the celtics and so i think that name started getting thrown around to see if there was a little buzz to it and it ended up not being the case i think themselves the reasons celtics didn't make a trade is because nobody wanted any package that they were offering nothing and that's why they didn't make a trade not danny didn't decide to trade smart no way that would happen no way right. I mean we'll never know. I feel like it's the other way tactically. Think bobby bobby gives it was almost like the delusional celtics just thinks like marcus smart guy. That's jerry later trading links i understanding smart is like What's that game. Them was wrong with me. Jenga the a piece. If you pull marcus smart out the entire things going to collapse on you like again..

three years next year romeo boston jimmy orlando smith tonight hughes bahrain Several teams gordon celtics jerry marcus marcus smart vucevic argentine

"I'm going to pitch to you guys may see it just trash we're going to let you know about it. All right. So we've talked about the issue like in the studio portion of it got we've talked about the issue that we see in my screen off. I think you got caught up drunk. Yeah. Yeah that power. So we talked about the issue with the Celtics possibly not bringing in a point guard if they do trade smart, we've talked about the magic possibly not wanting smart and we talked about Danny going to a 13-4 pics to facilitate this thing a little bit with the Thunder who have about 35 pics. I Luv Ur would they take Marcus Smart as as we've talked about as like a tone-setter like a leader for a young team take Nesmith to as like a, you know, first round player game and Thompson to the magic as a salary dump along with one Celtics pick like to thunder pics cuz they they have a million pics that they don't need from the Clippers and heat and whoever else And just overload the magic with pics to take Thompson dump Gordon get Hilda boss and who's an outstanding, you know rotation point guard and I think you make all three teams happy here. This won't be off too slow for the magic, but I think if they get three or four first-round picks X, yeah, they'll walk away happy. Hey it read movies increasing their no no, no not from not from the Celtics Jimmy. I think you'd like to of the the the thunder on my clippers pix pix giving your giving Courtney in what they're giving just scored into the Celtics are getting it for a picture Aaron Gordon. Well two from the Thunder to from the Celtics opening a Dunkin under getting a valued two pics smart and nice, Mass. No, no, that's not two first-round picks. Know if we 35 pics jobs get on something. No. No. Hey Mark, Marcus Smart goes back to his old College stomping ground. Maybe maybe the fans get get fired up for that a little bit joins offered here. So I'm I'm all over the map on smart and have been my entire like his entire exhaust reading him for Gordon. Yes. Yes, I am. But I mean, I think you can get the deal done without it. You everyone knew that already? I mean, I mean, I'm only doing it because I I have always been in the camp that I think I'm not going to sign them know. I just think he's his value is it's again, it's underrated or overrated and I've always been in the I just think it's more Legend than it is real and a lot of people totally disagree with that and I get it because there are moments. I'm like am I totally wrong here not true in the past. I mean I can't well, I'll see the birth. The floor here, you know Bobby about like Rob Williams on Rob Williams mistakes. And can you live with them? I I think there's more about Marcus Smart that's hard to live with than there is the positive and I've thought so for a long time he is he's just an absolutely Dreadful shooter..

"This guy's 35% for life, you're going to get 35% on all his shots, but there's something to him playing the role within the offense to that if he's going to be a threat to take off. 7 as many as 22 as we've seen him in the past threes you get a guard that you have to go at him like he's going to be a threat in those spots because you never know when it's going to be I I understand but I shared this stat the other day in 2019-2020 when he took 13 shots or more the Celtics were eight and twelve and two and four in the post-season last year when he took fewer than Twelve shots last year. They were Thursday 1 to 9. Okay this year the numbers were even worse when he took 13 shots and I'm going to add today's game to it when he takes 13 or more there one in five when he takes off a fewer. They're eight and two, I don't know how long over a course of time you need to see these numbers to recognize the Celtics are always worse when Marcus Smart shoots a lot. That's all I'm saying. It is as a high volume shooter when you shoot his lower percentage is Marcus Smart does your team suffers for it? That is a fact. Okay. It's isn't a hot take place. Are just literally this is empirical evidence. It's not the reason they lost tonight. The reason it rears its head is every time he shoots a lot. They lose or it's usually affects the team adversely so I don't know how how long how big like a sample size you need to see but going over two years. It's undeniable. It's not the only girl on the team has it just is a problem that continues to exist from time to time. Right? So I I will one of the first guys to say that when it's one of those markets smart lights, it's like, oh here we go off like one of these one of these games but those stats all sound great John and they make your point. They make the point that you're trying to make but there's gotta be some outside like factors truck games where other guys are hurt and he has true and there's George were like, they're already losing and it's not his fault. Of course, they're going to start like jazz kind of the cage. Right, right. So yeah, I do think there is a connection there. I mean there are plenty of games where that is the reason or one of the main reasons lost tonight. I don't know I saw but the thing that occurred it's there that that keeps popping up and every time we see it we've had this discussion and we keep having the discussion because all of these Marcus Smart games and poorly or so many of them have so I would be surprised this season. I think his shot his field-goal attempts are going to go down this season because Jason Tatum and Jenna Brown are another year older and and more focal point of the offense..

Jason Tatum Jenna Brown 13 Celtics 13 shots John Twelve shots 35% Marcus Smart eight 22 five 2019-2020 Thursday tonight twelve last year two one today
