"Free agents and we use the MLB trade rumors estimates of what contracts they will command just the sum of money that they'll receive and then we say over under. And if we pick in the right direction, then we get a $10 million bonus and we also get the difference between the projection and what they actually ended up getting and then you just sum that. And we get a total. So I have good news for me. Not for you. Which is that I won. And congratulations. Thank you. We did this with then Clemens as you will perhaps recall. I do not recall, but I trust that it happened. And I think if I have done the math right here with some assistance from the effectively wild wiki, I ended up at plus 67 million, Ben ended up the other Ben at 41.5 million and you, I am sorry to say, ended up at negative 19 million. Wow. Yeah, so you picked Corey Seeger and you took the under on 305 47 that hurt you a bit. And you also, it looks like took the under end Marcus semien. I think 38. So the rangers really ruined your draft completely. Well, you know, it's a weird exercise 'cause I'm happy to be wrong. Wrong, given the direction I went because good for those guys. That's fine. You were right on the under on Freddie Freeman and the over on January Gomes and then I guess you're just missed on the under on Eddie Rosario as well. Other Ben took the under un Max Scherzer at one 20. He missed on that, but and he also missed on Kenley over at 26, but he hit on the under on Kevin gausman at one 38 starling Marte at 80 and Mark canna at 24. And then my picks, I took the over on Carlos rodan that paid off very well for me because I said 25 million and then I took the under on casting on us at one 15, which did pay off for me. And I took the under on soler at 36 million, so that was a push. He ended up exactly there. And then I also missed on the under it rise el Iglesias and hit on the under on Alex wood. So I just basically avoided any big misses and just kind of played it safe, I guess, in retrospect, and it worked out, although I will say that relative to the totals from past off seasons, none of us did all that great. Historically, we often ended up doing much better. Sometimes much worse, but, you know, we ended up at times with like, I guess, just last year's draft, like Sam ended up at a 115 million, I ended up at one 37, so I don't know whether that is a credit to MLB trade rumors doing a better job of predicting contracts or us doing a worse job of taking over unders or wet, but it worked out with not particularly impressive numbers, but just wanted to circle back to that, which I would have done, even if I had lost and disgraced myself, but I did want to just follow up on that for people. Well, given some of the early losses you suffered in the minor league free agent draft, I think it's only fair that you glow about your victory. And I'm happy to have been wrong. Yeah. All right, and I guess Michael conforto maybe not as happy to perhaps have been run because reportedly he turned down a 9 figure extension heading into 2021. That's just the case of sometimes you hit the market at the right time and sometimes you don't. And it's hard to know and players they tend to bet on themselves sometimes and I admire that spirit and often it works out not always. But not always. Late breaking news as we were recording, packing naughton has a home. Famously of meet a major leaguer segment in the past, the cardinals who will be starting the season. Seemingly with Jack flaherty and Alex Reyes on the shelf, unfortunately for them, they have claimed paki naughton to add some pitching depth. So there's that packing out and still employed by a major league team. And also Ryan McMahon extended by the rockies. So rocky's not done. They also signed Ryan McMahon to a 6 year $70 million deal. You just never know. You just never know. I will point out once again that it is a crime, the perky knot in is not a Boston Red Sox, and that we do not get to hear Boston radio talking about fucking peck. You know what? I mean, this is, it's a crime. It's a crime, Ben. I mean, I'm happy that he's employed to be clear, but it is affecting crime. All right, well, that will do it, and that's kind of a wrap on at least the most major moves of this wild start and stop and start again off season. So next time I think we will do a season preview, we will start our division by division season preview series potentially. And we will get through those by opening day. Now that we know where almost everyone will be playing and what rosters will look like, that was sort of a necessary precondition for previewing the season with any degree of accuracy. So looking forward to that, we will be back soon. All right, that will do it for today. Thanks as always for listening. I'm just realizing now that I missed an obvious three sheets to the wind pun or possibly three shits to the wind when discussing Gavin sheets in his coffee consumption earlier, very common for podcasters to think of a funnier line after they are finished podcasting, at least in my experience, is spree de la Scalia as they say, I know Meg just said we were being less French these days, but that is the most used. One more thing to mention, we got a response to our discussion on our last episode, episode 1825 about using more gender inclusive language in baseball, the idea of finding some alternative to say 40 man roster, saying 40 person raster 40 player roster or maybe just expanded raster. That's just one example while we got an email from listener tavi kodiak, who wrote glad to hear positive thinking on gender inclusive language in and around baseball, one project I took on during the height of the pandemic was to rewrite the official rules of baseball for MLB to be completely gender neutral and have more inclusive sounding names in some of the rule examples. And guess what? Still completely legible as far as readability goes. It only took about a week working off and on or about 25 hours total, you can read about that in the updated rules note that these were based on the 2019 rules as those were the most readily available at the time. MLB has known since 2006 that the gender language was a problem since that's when they added in an addendum on the last page that when they use he him and his, they also mean she her and hers when that person is female in paraphrase, the reason why this is important is because MLB's rules are heavily influential when it comes to worldwide baseball, the International Olympic Committee uses MLB rules or at least did in 2020 and for a long time little league and other youth leagues directly lifted a lot of its rule language from the MLB rules, little league has since rewritten their rules to be more gender inclusive, especially since there have been women on the field in the miners as coaches and umpires and enrolls mentioned in the manual in the majors the language needs to change. Writers and commentators like you are a good first step toward a more welcoming linguistic landscape. Thanks for being mindful of it. And thanks to tavi for doing.

"One ninety two. There's a decent chance you do and when you want to look at that regardless of where the jay sit to get anywhere close to. Maybe i don't know at least eighty five wednesday ninety. You're going to need to go on a really big run and it's it's not i you know it's not impossible but it's you need a lot of you need more than one lengthly winning streak and that's what you're saying. Mark is that you need to go on run and you need to go on more than one run per. perhaps you know. A couple of people's spitballing. Some numbers you know going. Forty seven and twenty eight out of the all star break again not impossible but what the way. The jays have played this year. We know that they've been inconsistent. Is it something that you can really bank on them doing. Obviously anything can turn around. The jas are still you know. Couple pieces away from i. Guess being more complete of a team. They're going to be making a couple more moves before the end of the month at the trade deadline. So that's where you look at it and you. That's where you can. I guess argue to that point saying are we really that confident based on what we've seen since april i if that if this team is capable of doing that especially on a tough schedule coming out of the all star break and you know just a teen that's been consistent like i just mentioned so pre all star break the jason. The fifth hardest schedule in baseball are no in the al story with opponents. Winning percentage of at least five ten post all-star break the jaiswal of the third easiest schedule in the al with opponents winning percentage of four ninety one so while the schedule is not going to be the easiest. It's not going to be through the roof difficult what we saw at the beginning of the year. So that's why it's going to be interesting to see. How were you know how confident the jays are. And maybe the jays are confident that they can at least one of simeon array of. Maybe that's why they're going to be locked then but yeah going back to what we were talking about. How do you tell your fans even after this offseason. You signed.

"Both those guys are incredibly valuable pieces. And if we're looking at the reality of the team right now the blue jays aren't well winning the world series this year like that's like no one would disagree with me and saying that they aren't winning the world series this year. The argument is you sell off. Simeon and ray you get prospects back you even get. You could get major league talent back. That's ready to compete. You know next year you build the team up to win next year. You're not gonna win this year even if you make it into the postseason you're not gonna win this year so you sell off those guys to make a run for it in future years. How do you feel about that idea person. Because i think there is some validity to. I don't i. I don't think the blue jays are gonna do this in any world. I think that you know. They want to show confidence in the team that they have. They don't wanna be selling off guys when they got talent like vladimir guerrero junior bobryshev. They don't want to be telling these young guys got to take a step back and wait a year I don't think it's going to happen. But i think there could be some benefits to it. Happening yeah This is it's a tough one because as as you don't want it to be possible or true there is. I guess you can't rule it out. I mean this team is far from even being a lock to make that. Second wildcard spot. We know that there's a good chance that easily miss out of the playoffs this year and of course if that's the case and you don't move people simeon array. Those guys are gonna be walking into the free agent market and they're likely going to get paid. We saw what robbie ray did yesterday. And we've seen what worker simeon's that all your both of them. Especially robbie ray or the turnaround that both of them have had and it's a tough one but you know i..

"Basics of what we already mentioned in terms of how he's a top ten talent so it'll be interesting to see if governor hoaglund couldn't rehab if he can repair that album go back to the form that he was and if not i guess a well but the jays take a gamble on it and that's the beauty of the mlb draft is. You probably won't see the sky for at least two to three years. At least i mean. Obviously alex montoya was a different case. But especially somebody who underwent tommy. John surgery he has a long road of recovery ahead of him and a lot of development ahead of him as well. So we're going to see what happens with him and You know you look back in a couple of years and we will know if it was a good pick or not because we have to see everything like that so far. But you mentioned at the jay's do have two picks i believe they have one more pick I think it's in the nineties. From what i remember and right now. They're doing round two as we record this episode of our podcast. So we'll see what happens there. But either way i still like the idea of the it'll be dropping during the all star break and I think a lot of people to didn't realize that round one started yesterday. I think a lot of people were kind of caught off guard by that. But it's interesting. And it's all part of the all-star activities now so we have a couple of good days ahead of us but it's always cool. I guess seeing the draft in terms of people getting called obviously wasn't virtual like it was last year where in this case two people. Were able to boo commissioner rob manfred when he stepped up to the podium so i thought that was pretty cool. I know we see it in a lot of sports. By knowing that you know the decisions he's made in terms of how he's viewed as a commissioner in all like the big four north american sports. I think raw manfred is pretty much. The leader of the list in terms of commissioners who people hate. Or he's up there at least so it was cool to see. Yeah roger goodell's well yes so there's a there's a few of them there is a few of them but manfred. Of course we know what he's done some decisions interesting decisions that he's made over the past couple of years so either way good to see the draft underway and. I'm curious to see the jas pick in their next pick in the nineties and we'll see what happens with that but yeah governor hoaglund high upside and of course it's a little bit of a and time will tell the of this draft picks gonna work out or not for them who's interesting to see all the mascots dancing around in the theater. Whatever they were holding. I guess who's in colorado. It wasn't the they'll be network studio. But i liked that. They're doing that. I like that. It's no longer this private tiny event. That only diehard baseball fans care about. They're trying to develop it into something akin to what the draft is and other sports and it's never going to be the same thing because the players don't go straight to the the the majors they go straight to the teams that you cheer for. They are like you mentioned at best two years away. That's a lot of time to wait for. And that makes it kind of less exciting than than what other sports. But i still think that it can be developed and and worked on to the point where you know fans do get more excited about. I think this year was the right step in the in the right direction. One hundred percent so before we move on though..

"Righty a fastball. Ninety to ninety five miles an hour. It's got a hard slider. Toronto eighty five miles an hour. Llosa's a curve ball. All three of his pitches are graded at fifty. Five by basil. America was control greeted at seventy so he's got incredible control The big thing with him or at least what people are saying again. We all pretend to be experts But the big thing with him is the he was drafted in two thousand eighteen. Thirty sixth overall by the pittsburgh pirates They ended up not coming to a deal because of health concerns in his physical after the draft. This year he was shaping up to be a top ten guy. Top ten draft pick but he had to undergo. Tommy john surgery in may after an injury and he felt number nineteen to the blue jays. So this is kind of pick that has a really high upside. He is a top ten talent but also has a lot of potential volatility. It could go either way. Could you know totally go south for blue jays if he ends up coming back from tommy john surgery keep getting injured a history of injuries. So that's the two sides of this coin for the blue jays. Some people mentioned some comparisons to walker bueller He's the guy who had tommy. John surgery i think in university But he ended up being drafted by the dodgers. Coming back from it and make into into the majors and being who he is right now. So maybe that's who ends up being. Or maybe he ends up being. You know a guy. Like i can't think of a comparison but someone who's just always injured so high upside potentially low floor but at the nineteenth picky gotta take a little bit of a gamble and i dunno every draft pick is a good traffic until two years down the road and we can see what they become and that's the beauty of the mlb draft as there's just so many unknowns in question marks and of course in particular for this one you mentioned it. Gunnar hoagland who underwent tommy john surgery. I believe it was in may and that is why he dropped in. That is why people believe he was a top ten talent. Like you mentioned mark so the days of taking a gamble on this and of course i guess the only good part about it and we all know that tommy. John's for everyone. So that's the only thing you can really talk about is just how the impact time john will he be..
Hernández Hits 2 of Jays' 8 HRs in 18-4 Rout of Red Sox
"Tasker Hernandez belted a pair of three run homers over the green monster to the blue jays eight home runs in eighteen to four router the red Sox more games like the one that has today with six RBIs because that they don't want to pitch to bloody because it is more than on fire right now and I think they'd rather pay stormy flooding here Guerrero junior Bo Bichette orders Gurriel junior Cavan Biggio ready tell as a Marcus Semien also went deep a day after Toronto homered five times at Fenway Simeon ran his road hitting streak to twenty six games they should have four of Toronto's season high eighteen heads and Guerrero Hernandez and Gurriel each had three center Bogart's Bobby Dalbec homered for Boston I'm Dave very

"That's three point. One million dollars and rafael deletes. One point five million dollars so when you add that up. It's over fifty million dollars right there. That are coming off the books and the amount of financial flexibility to that that this team has even signing semyon to a one year deal makes it even more of a smarter move and there's lots of directions that this team can go and even if we head into let's just say you know the one thing. A lot of fans are overlooking to is the offs or the free agency isn't just the area where the jays can add. People are forgetting to of the trade deadline next because that. Don't be surprised if the james could be active. They were active last year and we saw them pulling off a lot of low risk deals were for people like taiwan walker. Robbie ray i guess you have to throw in jonathan vr. But you know this team to as we head into the trade deadline. There's a lot of flexibility because of the offseason. They have ahead of the next year and all these players that are coming off the books and other big contracts that they can look to trade maybe ran grischuk. That's the name that's been been thrown around but you know i really liked the way. The blue jays have set themselves up here entering the season because even ross atkins metropol. They've been doing lots of interviews and maybe even in the spring conference. I don't know if they mentioned it or not but they alluded to multiple times that the free free agency isn't just the only way where they can add. So that's one thing that is going to be interesting for me. Is that trade deadline because of the financial flexibility that they have. But i'm just very happy with the deal and the one year just makes it all worth it to me in terms of paying him eighteen million dollars but a good signing in a great piece for the lineup. We saw some people saying that this wasn't the end of the pursuit for infielders for the blue jays. I mean kris bryant has been the name that's been tossed around a little bit. Some people are saying they should still be involved in a deal for chris bryan and pitcher. Or you know. Still be on the margaret for. We've seen other names name. I like colin wong guys like that. Is that true. i. I personally think this ends it. Scott mitchell said you know still be on the lookout. The blue jays could add place on third as you move bijou to the outfield or busy. Oh you know. He's playing in different positions every day to give someone the day off. I don't see that happening. I see the blue jays now focusing all their attention on either a reliever or be a starter and that's it. I don't see them as pursuing an infielder given that they've already got simeon in that they've already got an infield crunch in terms of playing time. Do you guys think they're done on the infield or are you still keeping the open. The door open for another acquisition. I'm gonna say they're done be made mainly because they they really need to be like you said mark there. They've got a crowded infield. They have guys coming up in the next couple of years. Who are earning even further crowd. This and quite frankly i think i'm i'm happy with the infield they have i thought it was good even before the simeon acquisition and i still think it's decent with that being said they do need to get pitching bullpen is probably going to be more of a. We'll see what happens it towards the very very end of the offseason..

"The eighties with I'm sure we'll talk about coming up right here Melissa how are you welcome to the show. how are you doing I'm doing well it's good to talk to you again following we talked yesterday when Johnnie Dusko actually about the the Sacramento River cats not just winning the PCO title but then the national triple a title but he was telling us that like the the overall Tripoli title not as big as winning your like the PCL or your your is it the international is a bunch of different leads right that the the PCO probably the cream of the crop would you agree with that. yeah I mean I think obviously what you're investing in the whole year is your league and you know that one K. match up doesn't tell you a whole lot a series matchup that you got to go up against there and I thought it was such a cool. published right not just for the cat and sells it for the organization because so many of the guys that were actually on the team in the postseason work I've never brought up from double A. Richmond and I have you know that was a team that has struggled during the regular season they came together and a lot of those players really help push him over the top in the post season so I think it was just a really neat way for the organization that thirty came together and that it was great to see them back in that you know it's been awhile since they've won a title and it was great to see you never got back morning and Kobe's again about that eighty nine players to get a champion server in the datacenter that others are pretty incredible. yeah I think often go to. yeah whoever gets the whoever gets the order on that'll be a big class ring sale right. Sacramento yeah great piece this morning I was just reading before the show got the one about the the analytics department the Clooney's which I think is worth noting because ESPN finally taking notice on the eighties right I mean the red hot another big win last night Marcus Semien a career year Matt Olson Matt Chapman the plane incredible baseball shaman eyes been great since he came back they were asking this year's Pete article earlier this week how was it that the eighties for now fifteen eighteen years since the money ball era have been able to consistently do this and you kind of dove into their five main analytical department can you talk about that. yeah you know it's it's one of the smaller analytics departments in all of baseball which I think would probably provides a lot of people given the whole reputation that came out of of money ball and that being one of the first teams really embrace it but I think one of the things that you really got a sense of when I was talking to the guys with how the organization itself is almost its own analytic department in that everybody that works from coaches the scout. themselves really buy into all the work that they do so I think there's a there's a kind of a collaboration that goes from the top to the bottom of the organization in terms of being creative of how they look at things being willing to try new data points new technologies and rather make it work with less resources which is really sort of in the story of the organization yeah the last few decades and you coming clear on the analytics part of the of the organization it's funny because I I think back to the Moneyball movie right I know it's a movie you get you get funny stuff like Brad Pitt since CB sage thurs turned to brands which I would doubt Billy Beane's ever said that to save you but there's also the funny scene where like you get Jonah hill sit in the room with with all the older scouts right none of them want to talk about B. P. and is that still up if you think that's so president baseball we've got the old school clashing with the new school analysis. you know I think there's probably always going to be people that are are second and their weight but I can most scouts and it certainly discounted rates have have bought into this stuff because it gives them an additional information as well you know and I think vice versa that analytics died there are far more willing to take the opinions of scouts as well into what their analysis is I think that the guys talk about how you know there's just certain things that scout conceded that numbers can't really informing on especially when you're looking at like amateur players that are playing and parts that don't have all the vegetables that you would like you know maybe that he can ballpark or something like that and so you know they really do rely on on the input on that so I think the clash has really at least in the in the aid organization doesn't really exist I think those two departments actually work very closely together and you know it the I can't give it to. general manager that oversees all that when the scouting director for the cardinals before he came back to the aids organizations so you know he's got scout scouting background but all the guys went out school that work in that department that they understand the value of what you see there but you know there's some guys that are probably just never gonna really by and you all what now what's the benefit of launch angle or this thing so but yeah I think the movie had a big data that a lot of that yeah I think so too we were we were making the judge yesterday Melissa locked out of the athletic with us we're making a joke yesterday about the the upper cut verses the launch angle in talking about. he used to be actually Ted Raimi who does the this you have these podcasts with me was making that point earlier this week that he used to always here you know Reggie Jackson have the upper cats attend Williams had the upper cut I know you just hear about launching lesson we should flip it over to boxing where are you a civilly Klitschko helpful launching on that. we should should go both ways with it in talking about the analytics department relative to to to breaking down a player getting to the major leagues or a player that's maybe you don't have a big book on a kid at a college or a guy who is a played a ton of professional baseball do you think analytics are weighed more with the guy that you've got less of a of a scouting report on for more on that guy who's who's played more games with you because you viewed as a bigger sample size yeah I think the more data that you have on someone the better the numbers are so I think the more they played that you know the better the numbers I think that's probably why it and a lot of ways you know with extra match up in a big week season from game to game are probably more effective than Hey you know when you're trying to pick someone from the key to your call in a draft it out because you don't have that kind of a date on there I think the longer they played the more you can really run it out there and and sort of see where the projections would take you style yeah I think that's where that you know the character really still so valuable they're the ones that are going to find the stuff around the place you know yeah Clark St and not not able to kind of see what his track mandate is and all that kind of stuff at that point so funny you mention says brown attended with him out earlier this week and he said brown left fielder for the AZ played a lot of first based on a power in triple a this year and you would have to put me on actually earlier this season he said you know I did not ever anticipate even begin in the major leagues a year and a half ago two years ago now this guy is is a cornerstone player seems like he's a a legitimate contributor to a playoff team yeah you know and and you know he's a guy that I think has had to do that at every single level I mean when he was drafted would you make it up historically than than any play ball Turkey somebody make it up to high at the care that you know it's so would you kind of have to have that sort of edge to you it can work to an advantage I mean it could be a little wearing mentally but if your guy that can handle that it really create a situation where you're never complacent and you never have one of those years that gets away from you so you know he wrote that all the way up I know the organization in the eyes that works with all those years betrayal that he finally got that are. the technical advantage of it yeah it's been fun to watch integrate got to chat with says brown of the Oakland ETS I'm only asking about ten of the minor leaguers you did a great job this year we've we've loved having you on and chat with you about it as far as like minor leaguers who go unnoticed like Tyler Rogers come up he was a career minor leaguer is twenty eight years old now is looking like he could be a real factor in the giants bullpen next year so many guys just get overlooked or don't have the seasons are anticipating who's the next guy that we may see up next year that we haven't heard a lot about you can give me an Oakland a and a giant maybe you're somebody just comes to mind when you think about somebody who's maybe overlooked and has the ability but did not play out for them in twenty nineteen. yeah you know I think the judge if you're looking at that that little playoff run that that that the river catch made at there's a last detail of error who had some injuries early in his career when he was drafted at Indiana and but really it pitched well and healthy again and you know he's not like a guy that you're gonna put the copier rotation that you started at a really solid back and left the picture that you have sort of had to push his way out there and I I'd be interested to see what they do with him but I think you kind of one of those guys that could be a bit of a surprise for them yeah yeah yeah do you have another one there well you know I would get a date if your trying to think where it for the V. A.'s well but I think that I think that quite. you for looking at the Asian and coming down the stretch your towards potential one game playoff in a wild card lot of people are getting turned on he's useless ardo you like in the eighties are using him out we had a you know stars on yesterday could call him the Jesus lizard which I think is a. nickname for this kid the username in like a sort of a traffic in the right term you're certainly Josh skater like right like a two inning save guy around a two inning middle reliever when you think of the way these are using him. yeah I mean I think it obviously he's a starter and so but he's not necessarily experience in after stretched out enough not to be a starter in a location that really is actually perform better than you expected has all year so to figure out a way to get the most innings out of him all that without taking out started that's been affected for you I think that sort of thing that you did it like a gradual Collins let Bob Melvin I called it last week where it's you know that three having all within last night he went one inning they may be starting to think about it is he able could actually do a traditional starter when we fall if they got into a post season match up and obviously they can you cram it back to back games in the postseason with his kind of stuff that would be huge advantage here in the shuttle that had at the back end of the bull pen this year but next year you'll you'll feel and they're in a more traditional you know everything they are all so funny via the ace of as just sort of flipped the script on last year the offense is very good last year as well but it's all about the bull pen right Trevino in training and then this year it's been the rotation really even said Frankie montage went out with the the PD suspension the bullpen was not spectacular but now was art of kind of kind of holding down there yeah you know I think that that thing so it's it's like the rotation the kind of the strength of the whole idea of maybe an opener for a wild card is not really something I think that you would probably consider this year and the make up of the team is almost more traditional in the sense that you.
